Director of the Dutch national Ballet and award-winning choreographer Ted Brandsen has taken the turbulent life of the Dutch dancer and spy Mata Hari as his inspiration for a lavish new full-length ballet. A new score has been specially commissioned from GRAMMY nominated composer Tarik O‘Regan. Margaretha Zelle is one of the most infamous and iconic women in Dutch history. Desperate to escape the boundaries of reality, Margaretha reinvented herself as the exotic, Javanese princess Mata Hari. It is a tale that is as relevant today as it was 100 years ago: an ambitious young woman does whatever it takes to find the fame and fortune she craves. But Mata Hari was playing a dangerous game, and ultimately she would pay with her life.

In Genesis 32 we read the story of Jacob wrestling with God through the night. On the other side of Jacob’s divine encounter was a new name, a new blessing, a new identity and a new way of walking (literally). Will we be a worshipping people who are not content to sleep through the night (spiritually speaking) and wake in the morning unchanged? Like Jacob, will we enter into the wrestle with God, dare to know Him more intimately and be changed in the process? This is the premise for Hillsong Worship’s 26th live praise and worship album. The title, “THERE IS MORE”, truly is a statement-of-belief more than a record title. As Brooke Ligertwood writes, “THERE IS MORE at stake than we dare realise – souls, communities, families, nations on the other side of our wrestle through the night seasons. Our personal freedom is for corporate revival. THERE IS MORE of God and more to God and His love than we can possibly conceive of.” With songs such as, “Who You Say I Am”, “Be Still”, “The Passion” and “New Wine”, “THERE IS MORE” strikes the balance of contemplative devotion and powerful declarations of praise for both individuals and congregations alike.

2010 saw Gary Moore make a return to rock music after a long period of time exploring the blues. He was writing and working on a new rock album when all was brought to a halt by his untimely death on February 6th, 2011. This concert from Montreux in July 2010 was his last performance to be filmed. The setlist draws heavily on his hugely successful rock albums of the eighties, stirs in a couple of his classic blues tracks with some memorable hit singles and includes three brand new songs that would have featured on the album left sadly uncompleted on his death. Gary Moore was one of the finest and most respected guitarists the British Isles have ever produced. This concert shows just what a talent we will miss.

An intellectual miracle, magical sonorities, an incredible sense of risk: this is what comes to mind when seeing Martha Argerich. The one that has been nicknamed the "Lioness of piano" has lost nothing of her audacity, her spiritedness and her fiery temperament. Known for her heightened sense of friendship, Martha Argerich has been playing for a long time alongside Stephen Kovacevitch or Mischa Maisky. By Kovacevitch's side, with four hands or on two pianos, she rediscovers Mozart's innocence and candor. With a secret understanding and sometimes gently mocking each other, both players are like children when playing Mozart. Micha Maisky's intense lyrical bow brings out a more impetuous and authoritarian Martha Argerich. Both Sides Now: Live At the Isle of Wight Festival 1970

Joni Mitchell

Genre: Concert Films

Price: $ 12.99

Release Date: September 14, 2018

When Joni Mitchell took the stage Saturday afternoon, August 29th 1970, the Isle of Wight Festival had already seen its share of tumult. The promoters created, at great expense, one of the era’s finest concert lineups, including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Miles Davis, Emerson Lake and Palmer, The Doors and many more. Fences were broken down while a radical movement were pushing to declare the venture a free festival. All these artists played through what Joni termed “mountains of amplifiers” and could easily drown out any unruly audience. Joni, however, had only an acoustic guitar, a dulcimer, a piano., and her own singular voice. Joni Mitchell herself leads the viewer through a blow-by-blow of one of the most difficult performances of her career, face-to-face with what she calls “a beast”: a rowdy audience who literally try to hijack the show. Nearly breaking down, she summons the strength to win their respect and quiet them down. She delivers an incredibly emotional and ultimately triumphant performance, including her iconic masterpieces “Woodstock”, “Big Yellow Taxi”, and “Both Sides Now”. Academy Award-Winning Director Murray Lerner (Mao To Mozart, Festival!) creates a masterful addition to the Isle of Wight canon of films with Joni’s excellent performance. The concert/documentary film features Joni Mitchell in a modern interview, explaining the events and her reactions. The complete performance is also intercut with vintage footage from the festival attendees and the promoters to give better context to Joni’s personal recollections from the Isle of Wight in what is one of the most unique and memorable performances of the era.

It is a rare opera indeed that calls for one soprano diva and no fewer than six tenors. Mary Zimmerman’s fanciful production of Rossini’s drama, designed by Richard Hudson and with choreography by Graciela Daniele, provides the perfect setting for superstar Renée Fleming’s captivating performance of the title role. A beautiful but evil sorceress in the times of the Crusades, Armida sets out to regain the love of the Frankish knight Rinaldo (Lawrence Brownlee) by putting her magical spells on him. She at first succeeds to draw him into her web of sorcery, but ultimately divine intervention—and his fellow soldiers—free Rinaldo from his enchantment—much to the vengeful fury of Armida and her demons.

"This truly is Armageddon." said the local Athens, GA meteorologist on the seemingly sub-zero night last winter that the Drive-By Truckers were scheduled to play live at the 40 Watt. Luckily no snow, ice or hail could stop the band from firing up the room as they performed their critically acclaimed 12th LP, English Oceans, in full. Titled Black Ice Verite, fans will be able to re-live this concert experience as a live film. As the final track on English Oceans,"Grand Canyon" brings together both the record and the band's 40 Watt performance, as it is an emotionally overwhelming elegy for Craig Lieske. Lieske was a longtime member of DBT's touring family, a former manager of the 40 Watt Club and a key player in the city's experimental music scene. Lieske died suddenly of a heart attack in January 2013 following the first night of the band's three-night homecoming stand in Athens. English Oceans is dedicated to him.

By renouncing love and forging a ring from the gold Alberich has become enormously powerful, but Wotan and Loge trick Alberich and take the hoard from him. Enraged, Alberich puts a curse on the ring: it will bring death to anyone who possesses it, a curse that soon costs the giant Fasolt his life. Get ready to mosh in the privacy of your own home, because multiple Grammy-nominated, Platinum-selling thrash masters ANTHRAX have announced the release of “Chile On Hell”! “Chile On Hell” was filmed at the Teatro Caupolican in Santiago, Chile on May 10, 2013, and features Anthrax – Joey Belladonna/vocals, Scott Ian/guitar, Charlie Benante/drums, Frank Bello/bass and Jon Donais/lead guitar. The band performed an extended set that featured songs from Anthrax’s entire catalogue – all the fan-favorites including “I Am The Law," “Indians,” “Madhouse,” “Caught In A Mosh,” “The Devil You Know," and “I’m Alive”. "Santiago was the perfect place to film the show for this,” said Anthrax’s Charlie Benante. "When we’d played there in the past, we’d finish our set, play our encore and go back to the dressing room, but every time, the fans would continue to scream and cheer and clap. I mean, they went on and on, they wouldn’t stop. One time Scott and I walked out to the side of the stage just to watch what was going on in the audience, it was intense. Why wouldn’t we want to film a DVD in front of an audience like that?" The band was in the home stretch of a three-plus-year campaign to record and support Worship Music and the Anthems EP, a period of time that was loaded with high points: the return of “classic era” vocalist Joey Belladonna, Worship Music making the band’s highest chart debut in two decades, the series of Big Four shows – Anthrax, Slayer and Metallica, the three bands that wrote the speed and thrash metal road map – that culminated in the September 2011 Big Four spectacular at Yankee Stadium in the band’s home town of New York, “Anthrax Day” declared in the Bronx, becoming the first metal band to have its music (“Got The Time”) played on Mars, two Grammy nominations, and sold out shows in every corner of the globe – “We wanted to finish on a high note".

This latest addition to the acclaimed From The Vaults series was filmed at the San Jose Arena on The Rolling Stones’ No Security tour, which ran from January to June 1999 through North America and Europe. It followed on from the colossal Bridges To Babylon tour and took its name from the “No Security” live album recorded on that 1997/98 tour. In reaction to the huge stadiums played on Bridges To Babylon the conscious decision was made to book the band into smaller venues for the initial North American leg of the No Security tour. This show was filmed in April 1999 in front of an audience of a little over 30,000 (intimate by Rolling Stones standards!) at the end of the North American dates. Previously unreleased, it captures the band in top form playing a set that spans from mid-sixties hit singles up to the then current Bridges To Babylon album.

Based on the Academy Award®-winning 1994 Italian film that became a surprise hit with audiences around the world, and also on the 1985 novel Ardiente Paciencia by Antonio Skármeta, Il Postino tells the story of a shy young postman in a tiny Italian fishing village, who discovers the courage to pursue his dreams through his daily deliveries to his only customer, the esteemed Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, played by Plácido Domingo. Grant Gershon, LA Opera’s chorus master and associate conductor, conducts this production directed by Ron Daniels, with scenery and costumes designed by Riccardo Hernandez, projections designed by Philip Bussmann and lighting designed by Jennifer Tipton. The choreographer is David Bridel. Other leading roles are performed by tenor Charles Castronovo in the role of Mario Ruoppolo and soprano Amanda Squitieri as the beautiful café waitress Beatrice Russo, the object of Mario’s romantic ardor. Other performers include soprano Cristina Gallardo-Domâs as the poet’s wife Matilde Neruda, baritone Vladimir Chernov as the postmaster Giorgio and mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera as Donna Rosa, Beatrice’s aunt. The opera, sung in Spanish, was performed in September and October of 2010 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and is composer Daniel Catán’s final opera. “I am very excited to participate in the world premiere of an opera by one of today’s most important composers,” said tenor Plácido Domingo, LA Opera’s General Director. “Daniel Catán’s operas have been very popular throughout the United States and he and I had wanted to collaborate on a new work. When he told me that he was working on an operatic adaptation of Il Postino, I immediately felt that Pablo Neruda was a role that I very much wanted to bring to life.”

"I feel, therefore I am." For Hector Berlioz, and for the Romantic Movement, those were more than words; they were a song of the heart. But with the unprecedented outpouring of emotion in his Symphonie fantastique Berlioz almost overpowered Paris. This orchestral sonic spectacular, written to win the heart of a beautiful actress, demanded sacrifice from its author and his audience. From romantic daydreams to deadly displays of devotion, the symphony relates an “episode in the life of an artist,” that artist being the love-obsessed composer himself. This symphony encapsulates the inner drama – and trauma – that made Berlioz one of the masters. Join Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony as they follow Berlioz to the brink and beyond in this program.

Until then they had opened for the industry's biggest superstars, and now it was time to step out on their own. Not only did they own the night, they owned over 100 of them across 11 countries in front of more than 1 million fans. The concept for the stage was simply sketched out on a paper plate while out on tour the summer of 2011, but evolved into a massive musical playground to showcase Lady A's exuberant talent. They dreamed big, but couldn't fathom what was about to happen to them. Before taking the show overseas, Lady Antebellum celebrated the final weekend of the North American leg by documenting the show from Little Rock, AR and telling their humble perspective of becoming international touring superstars. The Black Keys' new concert DVD, Live at the Crystal Ballroom, reflects the no-frills genius of the drums-and-guitar duo's studio sound: It's a refreshingly straightforward video document of their April 4, 2008 sold-out gig at Portland, Oregon's Crystal Ballroom, featuring seventeen songs culled from all five of the pair's albums. Director Lance Bangs – who has made videos for the Arcade Fire, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sonic Youth as well as directing R.E.M.'s Road Movie – keeps his small camera crew focused on the stage, getting up close and sweaty with guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney. Occasionally, he'll pull back to acknowledge the head-bobbing crowd pressed close to the stage, their hands reaching out to Auerbach. There are no visual pyrotechnics, no elaborate editing, no backstage cutaways, yet the show is riveting from start to finish and the feel of the music in that room is nothing less than triumphant.

These two concerts from Montreux in 1991 and 1992 catch Tori Amos right at the start of her solo career. The first, from July 1991, was filmed a few months before the release of her "Little Earthquakes" album and the second from July 1992 followed a few months after. There is a fascinating progression from one year to the next as she grows in confidence and skill as a live performer, buoyed by the critical and commercial success of the album. Naturally most of the songs are taken from "Little Earthquakes" but there are also rare songs from her various EPs released across the two years which didn't make it onto the album including her distinctive takes on Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" and "Thank You" and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

In July-August 1987, after 100 shows around the world on The Bridge Tour, Billy Joel accepted the Kremlin’s invitation to the U.S.S.R. for six fully-staged rock shows in Moscow and Leningrad, fulfilling a long-time desire to perform in Russia. During their stay, Billy and his family, along with musicians, staff, and a huge press entourage spent their days interacting with the Russian people, forging true bonds of friendship wherever they went. For the first time A Matter Of Trust – The Bridge To Russia: A Documentary presents an expanded version of what fans saw and heard over a quarter-century ago. The brand-new 90-minute film takes a fresh look at the groundbreaking trip, painstakingly incorporating some of the documentary material from 1988, both released and unreleased. But the heart and soul of this new film comprises up-to-date interviews with nearly 20 U.S. and Russian participants, including Billy, Christie Brinkley, band musicians, crew, and many others. There is a passion and intimacy to their interviews that underscores the historical significance of what these fellow travelers all witnessed, and the warmth that the Russian people showered on them. Billy has always considered that going to Russia was the most important thing he’d ever done as a performer. The freedom and excitement of his presence permanently affected the country and played a role in the ultimate dissolution of the U.S.S.R. in 1991. This new deluxe box set A Matter Of Trust – The Bridge To Russia also includes newly commissioned essays and previously unseen photography.

Its opening notes must be the most famous ever written, a “motto” identifying not only the composer but the whole concept of classical music. What makes four notes immortal? Is it the way they are remorselessly hammered into the listener’s ears? Never before had Beethoven addressed his audience so directly and with such force, never again was he to reduce his compositional forces to such a piercing focus as in this Fifth Symphony. The remarkably brief opening movement is utterly dominated by the ostensibly trivial “fate knocking at the door” motto; no contrasting idea is developed to compete with it. The slow variation movement consists mostly of figurative reworkings of its comforting theme, strikingly subdivided by the three trumpet-led C major interruptions that presage a happy ending. The unexpected return of the fateful motto in the third movement blocks off this view again – a delay that only sharpens the longing for deliverance in the finale. The bars leading to the final Allegro permit no break between the movements, straining with incomparable anticipatory force towards their symphonic goal: the crowning glory of C major. This movement is a cry of exultation rising above all that has gone before, with its blazing energy, with themes that always come across clearly in all their many and varied forms, and with a simply boundless joy that makes sense only from the perspective of the whole work, but is then irresistible. Like no other symphony, Beethoven’s Fifth embodies the idea of “per aspera ad astra”; like no other, it gives the impression of a psychological journey in which the traveller runs up against obstacles and has to find ways over or around them. This process of continuing development, with a certain healing effect in the music itself, is written into many of Beethoven’s works and helps to explain why they have kept their appeal for two centuries. In Beethoven’s Fifth, the whole symphony tacitly expresses this climb up the stairway to heaven.

Renée Fleming stars in the title role of one of Handel’s greatest dramas, seen in Stephen Wadsworth’s 2004 Met premiere production. Rodelinda is faced with an impossible dilemma: With her husband Bertarido believed dead, she either has to marry the despised Grimoaldo (the elegant Joseph Kaiser), who has usurped her husband’s throne, or see him murder her son. But Bertarido (leading countertenor Andreas Scholl) is alive and eventually reclaims both throne and wife—and makes peace with his enemies. Stephanie Blythe is marvelous as Eduige, Bertarido’s sister, who is betrothed to Grimoaldo but turns against him. Baroque authority Harry Bicket conducts.

Queen

Genre: Concert Films

Price: $ 12.99

Release Date: October 29, 2007

Following their record-breaking South American tour, the Montreal shows on November 24 and 25, 1981 were to be the only concerts by Queen ever shot on film – indeed they were the first group to shoot an entire show in full cinema format 35mm. These releases offer the best ever sound and picture quality on a Queen concert release. Always a great live band, with two years non-stop touring behind them and Freddie Mercury in front of them, Queen excelled themselves with the cameras rolling. The footage has been digitally restored from the original film and the sound has been newly mixed and mastered for DTS Surround Sound and PCM Stereo from the original multi-track tapes. “Hello Montreal…long time no see. You wanna get crazy?” asks Freddie as the band tear into their alternative ‘fast’ version of We Will Rock You, and from there on Queen show their hard rock roots, slowing down only for Love of My Life and the more mid-tempo Under Pressure, notably being performed live for the first time in this concert. The real joy to be had in watching Freddie, Brian, Roger and John performing here is that, unlike any other Queen concert film available, this delivers raw Queen. This is before the Hot Space album, before keyboards would find a place in the band’s touring line up; this is simply four musicians in total cohesion. Originally titled, “We Will Rock You”, this film was first launched at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1983 – as only Queen could. It was then released in North America (September 1984), becoming the first commercially available film of Queen in concert. For this special edition, the picture has been digitally restored from the original 35mm negative.

Iggy Pop's show at the Royal Albert Hall on May 13th 2016 has been described as "the performance of a lifetime". Pop had recorded the album Post Pop Depression with Joshua Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age (who produced and co-wrote the record) as a highly personal and introspective reflection back on his career to date. Post Pop Depression is the 17th Iggy Pop album-and the first to be co-created with producer/guitarist/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/bandleader Homme. It was recorded in seclusion in Homme's home studio in the Californian desert, and he enlisted support for the recording from his Queens Of The Stone Age bandmate & Dead Weather-man Dean Fertita, and Arctic Monkeys' drummer Matt Helders. Joined on stage by something of a super-group featuring Homme, Fertita, Helders, Troy Van Leeuwen of Queens Of The Stone Age, and guitar legend Matt Sweeney, Iggy storms through a selection of tracks from Post Pop Depression and his 1977 David Bowie-produced albums The Idiot and Lust For Life. The Royal Albert Hall was packed to capacity and Iggy performed one of the standout shows of his career. The Post Pop Depression backing band supported Pop's punk antics with a rock 'n' roll homage of their own to a true original. An unmissable musical event, which was hailed by The Sunday Telegraph as one of the best gigs the reviewer had ever seen.

John Williams has become an irreplaceable figure in American popular culture. He ranks as the best-known creator of movie music in Hollywood history, with themes and scores that are instantly recognizable to listeners around the world.Perhaps none of Williams’ music is more famous than that of Star Wars (1977),which won the composer his third Academy Award. Director George Lucas later recalled: “About 90 percent of the Star Wars films are music. It’s done in a very old-fashioned style, almost like silent films, so the music kind of tells the story.A lot of the emotional content is carried through the music as much as by the scenes themselves.”
The extract “Throne Room and Finale,” from the conclusion of the original film, accompanies a ceremony honoring the victorious Luke Skywalker,Han Solo, and Chewbacca, and the end-credits roll. As Williams said in 1977:“I used a theme I am very fond of over the presentation of the medals; it has a kind of Land of Hope and Glory feeling to it, almost like coronation music.” For the finale, he invokes Luke’s theme, the Rebel spaceship fanfare, Princess Leia’s theme, and others from that first in what would eventually become a six-film series spanning nearly three decades, all scored by Williams.

Shostakovich may have secreted a subversive cipher beneath the surface of his life-saving Symphony No. 5. This is all the more shocking since another bad review from Stalin’s totalitarian forces could have meant a sentence to the Gulag or worse. After his opera Lady Macbeth was publically condemned as immoral by Pravda, the Soviet newspaper, Shostakovich knew he had only one chance to redeem himself. When he penned this fifth symphony, the composer was literally writing for his life. The risk was so high that Shostakovich slept on the stairs outside his apartment so the secret police would not wake his family when they came from him, as he was sure they would. This Keeping Score program investigates the arresting symphony that would either redeem Shostakovich or condemn him. Did he dare hide a kernel of musical criticism in what appears to be a paean to the Motherland? Join Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony as they explore the hidden language of this masterwork. What Shostakovich has to say might depend on what you’re brave enough to hear.
