Bid by B.B. King’s daughter to get medical records denied

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A court in Las Vegas denied a bid by one of B.B. King's daughters to obtain the late blues icon's medical records from an executor who she alleges mishandled her father's treatment before he died. Probate Commissioner Wesley Yamashita told a lawyer for Patty King on Friday that she can subpoena the records, so he didn't need to issue a court order. The lawyer for B.B. King's estate told the judge that he thinks Patty King is fishing …

B.B. King Did NOT Die From Poisoning

The accusations of B.B. King’s daughters trolling for more inheritance money have seemingly been proven accurate.

A Las Vegas coroner told Rolling Stone that 89-year-old simply died from natural causes on May 14 with Alzheimer’s disease being the “primary contributing factor.”

Shortly after the well-traveled musician’s death, daughters Karen Williams and Patty King alleged that manager LaVerne Torey and his longtime assistant Myron Johnson kept their father ill in order to expedite his passing. Just like the previous claims, lawyer Brent Bryson slammed them for their outlandish lies.

“It is unfortunate that Mr. King’s body had to be subjected to a needless autopsy based upon fictional assertions,” Bryson said in a statement. “As expected, the autopsy report confirms that Mr. King died as a result of natural causes, and not as the result of poisoning or other wrongful conduct by Louise LaVerne Toney, Myron Johnson or anyone else. Both Ms. Toney and Mr. Johnson are happy that the spurious and disparaging allegations made by certain of Mr. King’s children against them, have been dispelled. Perhaps we can now focus on the body of musical work Mr. King left the world and stop the ‘witch hunt’ so that Mr. King may now finally rest in peace.”

Ms. King and Ms. Williams will have to live with their measly $ 3,000 inheritance settlements, unless they want to whittle it down on conducting an independent autopsy.

“In the Army, I heard an electric guitar that wasn’t playing spiritual. It was T-Bone Walker doing ‘Stormy Monday’ and that was the prettiest sound I ever heard in my life. That’s what really started me playing the blues.” — B.B. King

“When I sing I play in my mind, the minute I stop singing… I start to sing by playing Lucille.” – B.B. King

Born in 1925 on a cotton plantation outside Indianola, Mississippi, young Riley B. King started playing a guitar and became “Beale Street Blues Boy” who became “Blues Boy” and finally, B.B. King. An oft-told tale, B.B. King saved his guitar from a burning night club. Later, he found out that the two men who knocked over a kerosene barrel which ignited the fire were fighting over a woman named Lucille. B.B. decided to name his guitar (and every subsequent guitar he played) “Lucille” as a reminder never to do anything as foolish as run into a fire to save a guitar.

B.B. King has had an incredible career. He is “The King Of The Blues” or “The King B.”, and he has influenced Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, and virtually every electric guitarist since. An indefatigable road warrior, it is estimated that B.B. King has played more than 15,000 concerts in his 60-plus year career, playing 200-250 shows well into his seventies. And I saw a bunch of them.

In ’93, The Blue Note in New York City advertised “A Rare Club Date With B.B. King.” I bought tickets, and Erin and I and some friends showed up early for the first come, first served general admission. We ended up front-row center, directly in front of his eminence. B.B. had his entire 12-piece band with him and it was quite a sight in this small, intimate and fabled New York jazz club. In those days, the Blue Note had mostly jazz quartets and quintets, and they were not equipped to service B.B.’s large band requirements and retinue. In fact, B.B.’s three-piece horn section was relegated to off stage because they could not fit. They played off stage mostly, but when they did a solo, they scurried on, blew a few beautiful notes, and returned to the shadows. The life of a sideman. Not 20 feet from greatness, more like eight…

B.B. and his band played an incredible set of music. He opened with “Let The Good Times Roll” and we were transported to another world. “Lucille” never sounded better as B.B. coaxed and bent beautiful, crystalline blues. As he went through “Sweet Sixteen”, “When It All Comes Down”, “Rock Me Baby” and “The Thrill Is Gone”, the blues were never so joyous and life affirming. The crowd erupted into a standing ovation as he finished his set. A bunch of folks started reaching out to B.B. for a handshake or a memento. B.B. saw Erin directly in front of him, smiled and handed his guitar pick to her. B.B. always had an eye for the ladies, and he has reputedly sired 15 children with 15 different woman. Apparently, as hard as he worked on stage, he was as equally tireless off.

B.B. King was very kind and gracious when I met with him backstage. He loved seeing some of the old albums. “Look how skinny I am. And young!” He was especially interested in Singin’ The Blues, his debut album released in 1956, and he paused as he looked at the song titles with care. He couldn’t have been nicer as he stuck out a big paw to shake hands.

Several years later, he published an autobiography, Blues All Around Me (1996), which was an honest and open look at his career and influences. Perhaps a little too open and honest. I found it interesting that he loved Frank Sinatra: “I’m a Frank Sinatra nut. No one sings a ballad with more tenderness… and when Sinatra wants to swing, no one swings harder. No one phrases any hipper.” And for guitar inspiration, he listened to Les Paul, inventor of the solid body electric guitar and many other recording advances like overdubbing. Less interesting was a chapter entitled “Someone Asked Me About Oral Sex.” Really B? I can think of a lot of other questions. This must be the most improbable chapter in the history of music autobiography! Prurient, salacious, and completely unnecessary, it is hard to believe that a publisher or editor fought for this chapter’s inclusion. I couldn’t believe what I was reading so I read it over and over and over and over again… just to make sure I wasn’t missing anything.

B.B. King, blues icon, legend, ladies man. Never have the blues felt so satisfying. The thrill is never gone.

B.B. King’s death strikes mournful chord for musicians, presidents

Guitarist Eric Clapton remembered the B.B. King album that inspired him as a young musician and Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton recalled the thrill of performing with the “King of Blues.” Musicians, politicians and blues lovers around the world on Friday expressed sorrow over the death of the blues legend on Thursday night at the age of 89, and their gratitude for the legacy he left. Clapton, one of the music world’s most influential guitarists, thanked King for inspiration, encouragement and friendship over the years. “He was a beacon for all of us who love this kind of music and I thank him from the bottom of my heart.” Clapton encouraged people to find the 1965 album called “B.B. King Live At The Regal,” saying it was “where it really started for me as a young player.” Obama, who calls the blues mecca of Chicago his home, remembered how he sang “Sweet Home Chicago” with King at a White House blues concert three years ago.

Blues legend B.B. King, 89, mourned by music world

Blues musician B.B. King, pictured playing at a Jazz Festival in Antibes, southern France, in 1999Blues legend B.B. King, whose crisp, powerful guitar licks made him among the instrument's greatest masters and a towering influence for generations of musicians, has died at 89. King until late last year, when his health declined, maintained a touring schedule that put much younger artists to shame. "The blues has lost its king, and America has lost a legend," said President Barack Obama, who recalled once being persuaded to sing "Sweet Home Chicago" at the White House with King. "There are not many left that play it in the pure way that B.B. did," said rock-blues guitarist Eric Clapton, who thanked King in a short video that was receiving nearly one million views an hour on Facebook.

B.B. King Died After Series Of Mini Strokes, Medical Experts Say

LAS VEGAS (AP) — B.B. King’s physician and the coroner in Las Vegas say the 89-year-old blues legend died of a series of small strokes attributable to his longstanding battle with type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Darin Brimhall and Clark County Coroner John Fudenberg (FYOU’-den-berg) tell The Associated Press the medical term for the cause of death is multi-infarct dementia. It’s sometimes referred to as MID, and is also called vascular dementia.

Dementia is a permanent loss of brain function that occurs with certain diseases, including diabetes. It usually affects adults over age 55, and can affect memory, thinking, language and judgment.

Brimhall says King’s strokes resulted from reduced blood flow as a consequence of chronic diabetes — or unhealthy fluctuations in blood sugar levels.

King was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes many years ago.

Legendary Blues Musician B.B. King Confirms He Is In Hospice Care

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Blues legend B.B. King was in hospice care Friday at his home in Las Vegas, according to a longtime business associate with legal control over his affairs.

The 89-year-old musician posted thanks on his official website for fans’ well-wishes and prayers after he returned home from a brief hospitalization, said Laverne Toney, King’s longtime business manager and current power-of-attorney. “Mr. King is where he wishes to be,” Toney said. “He’s always told me he doesn’t want to be in a hospital. He wants to be at home.”

An ambulance was summoned Thursday after what Las Vegas police Officer Jesse Roybal characterized as a domestic dispute over medical care. No arrests were made, and Roybal said no criminal complaint was filed.

Toney disputed reports by celebrity website TMZ citing one of King’s daughters as saying she called police because she was upset about her father’s condition and that he had suffered a minor heart attack. Efforts by the Associated Press to reach the daughter, Patty King, were not immediately successful.

Paramedics checked King’s heart rhythm, and he was treated at the hospital for complications of high blood pressure and diabetes, Toney said. King was diagnosed with diabetes decades ago.

Roybal confirmed that police received a report on Nov. 16 claiming abuse at the house. No charges have been filed, and the police spokesman said details of the investigation were not immediately available.

King’s hospitalization was the second in a month. He posted a similar message to fans when he returned home April 7.

He canceled the final shows of his 2014 tour last October after falling ill in Chicago.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He has released more than 50 albums and sold millions of records worldwide.

His guitar, famously named Lucille, has soared and wailed in songs ranging from “Every Day I Have the Blues” to “When Love Comes to Town” to “The Thrill is Gone.”
