EXCLUSIVE: Giorgio Armani Names Five Beauty Ambassadors

READY FOR THEIR CLOSE-UP: Giorgio Armani has not one, but five, new beauty ambassadors.
The Italian brand has tapped Chinese actress Elaine Zhong alongside models Barbara Palvin, Sara Sampaio, Madisin Rian and Greta Ferro to star in a series of new campaigns shot by David Sims kicking off this month.
They joined Cate Blanchett, who earlier this year was named the brand’s first global beauty ambassador, last weekend on the red carpet of the Venice Film Festival, which counts Giorgio Armani as its official beauty sponsor.
Zhong is best known for her role in the Chinese historical drama “Young,” while Palvin and Sampaio have both represented Armani fragrances as the faces of Acqua di Gioia and Sì Passione, respectively.
Rian has appeared in the campaign for Armani’s Neo Nude cosmetics range, while Ferro starred in “Una Giacca” (“A Jacket”), a short film produced during the first edition of the Armani/Laboratorio, a free training course in the field of cinema.
Blanchett has been the face of the Sì fragrance since its launch in 2013 and now fronts makeup and skin care as well. The Australian actress attended the premiere of “A Star is Born” in Venice wearing a black velvet Giorgio Armani Privé gown with a

Coachella 2018: ‘Activation’ Fest for Fashion, Beauty, Tech Brands

Just as the Emmys signal the official start of awards season in Hollywood, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival marks the beginning of festival season around the world. That equals spring and summertime marketing bonanzas for many brands, whether apparel, accessories, beauty, lifestyle or any tangential category.
Weekend One of the 2018 event, which kicks off on Friday at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, Calif. — along with adjacent off-site events in Palm Springs and surrounding towns – has already been teased and hyped in all manner of social media posts, direct-to-consumer e-mails and other online marketing, not to mention eagerly awaited party invitations that have arrived in the inboxes a lucky few thousand celebrities, influencers and media in the last week.

The events themselves are the physical culmination of weeks of Internet campaigning — and in some cases, years of planning — for “best activation.” The word describing the pool party/dance party/brunch/photo op a brand produces at the festival has become one of the most overused terms of the season, along with engagement. Together they represent the golden goose of marketing, one that hopefully impacts a brand’s bottom line and overall awareness.
Among the companies “activating” at this year’s festival

There are three things you need to know about Ashley Winston: 1) She has six brothers and they all have beards, 2) She is a reader, and 3) She knows how to knit. Former beauty queen, Ashley Winston’s preferred coping strategy is escapism. She escaped her Tennessee small town, loathsome father, and six brothers eight years ago. Now she escapes life daily via her Amazon kindle one-click addiction. However, when a family tragedy forces her to return home, Ashley can’t escape the notice of Drew Runous— local Game Warden, bear wrestler, philosopher, and everyone’s favorite guy. Drew’s irksome philosophizing in particular makes Ashley want to run for the skyscrapers, especially since he can’t seem to keep his exasperating opinions— or his soulful poetry, steadfast support, and delightful hands— to himself. Pretty soon the girl who wanted nothing more than the escape of the big city finds she’s lost her heart in small town Tennessee. This is a full-length novel, can be read as a standalone, and is the fourth book in the 'Knitting in the City' series.

Fashion Blogger’s Bizarre Beauty Secret: Sperm Facials (NSFW)

A skin care treatment being promoted by a British model-turned-fashion blogger is rubbing some experts the wrong way.

Her secret: A daily dose of semen smeared on her face.

Tracy Kiss, a former glamor model with two kids, was looking for ways to ease her rosacea, a condition that causes the face to redden, often producing pus-filled bumps, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Kiss may love sperm facials, but dermatologists are strongly against her bodily fluid beauty regimen.

Kiss came about the method after a beautician suggested an acid facial for her rosacea.

The 28-year-old decided to try more natural skincare methods instead.

“Semen builds babies, they come out very soft and have beautiful skin, and it leaves my skin nice and soft, so I’m very happy to use this as a facial,” she said, according to the Mirror.

“It feels like a face pack that pulls the skin inwards, it feels so glossy to wipe it off. It’s like having a kind of oil on the face or a wax where it just glides beautifully against the water. It’s so cooling and soothing.”

Kiss isn’t the first person to sing the praises of sperm facials.

In 2013, when TMZ asked actress Heather Locklear for anti-aging secrets, she replied,

“You just put semen on your face.”

Former Cosmopolitan magazine editor, Helen Gurley Brown, also swore by the “semen facial” in her memoir, “I’m Wild Again.”

“Spread semen over your face,” she advised. “[It’s] probably full of protein as sperm can eventually become babies.”

Dr. Lynne Haven, a dermatologist in Greenwich, Connecticut, hopes the semen facial doesn’t catch on with others.

“I’ve never seen any evidence of benefits, and there are several areas of concern,” she told The Huffington Post. “Sexually transmitted diseases, like herpes, HIV and others could be transmitted, and there are many other better treatments for rosacea.”

San Diego-based dermatologist Dr. Fred Shahan is also dubious of sperm facials.

“Semen does have protein, but rosacea is related to hair follicles,” he told HuffPost. “I don’t see any basis for this working.”

WATCH: Tracy Kiss demonstrates her semen facial:

Kiss admits getting the semen needed for her daily dose can also be a sticking point.

That’s why she recommends a person invest “in a reliable male with a healthy diet and stamina to ensure a plentiful supply, perhaps a boyfriend, husband or, in my case, a health-conscious friend” before beginning the treatment.

She explains in more detail on her blog:

“Whoever you choose to provide a donation, it is important that you use the same caution you would around all bodily fluids, always ensure that they have had a sexual health check and are eating clean and nutritious food a few days before instead of smoking, drinking and binging on junk, or the quality will suffer.

“I would never condone using anonymous semen, and in no way encourage this to become a sexual act. I am simply looking at this from the angle of beauty. You have to strip away the shock-horror of the ingredients and any preconception of how it may feel, smell or look and base it solely on what it does.”

Although most of the dermatologists interviewed don’t believe Kiss’ sperm facial has much medical merit, she gets grudging support from at least one.

Dr. Tess Mauricio, southern California-based skin doctor, said semen does contain a protease — that’s what helps sperm break through eggs in order to conceive — so it may also have a chemical or enzymatic effect on human skin.

“It may make the skin feel softer and smoother, but the evidence is all anecdotal,” she told HuffPost. ”There are more cosmetically acceptable products that can achieve similar results.”

New York-based dermatologist Dr. Tabasum Mir concedes that some people may want to give themselves a natural facial, but said semen doesn’t really have enough bang to do the job.

“The amount of protein in seminal fluid is small. You’d be better off using egg whites,” she told HuffPost. “Plus, sperm has urea — which is basically pee — and testosterone, which causes breakouts.”

What to Store at His Place for Cuffing Season: The Ultimate Stealth Beauty Arsenal

cuffing season

Expand

“Happiness!/it is . . . very cold,/we woke early this morning,/and lay in bed kissing,/our eyes squinched up like bats,” writes former poet laureate Robert Hass about the start to an especially peaceful day with his wife, Brenda Hillman, but he could just as easily be chronicling almost anyone’s morning during cuffing season. It’s that special time of year when the chill in the air signals the singles of the world to pair up for a long and less lonely winter of Netflix-bingeing-from-bed bliss (their eyes squinched up like bats). The time-tested tradition is an effective method of fighting Seasonal Affective Disorder, trading in dark- and cold-induced blues for a Hass brand of happiness. But tucking into your new significant other’s place is a creature comfort that loses its appeal the moment you find yourself in his or her barren desert of a bathroom, stocked only with a single bar of soap and a tube of toothpaste that not even MacGyver could fashion a proper beauty routine out of these days. For a couple to make it to spring unscathed, a nimble product arsenal should be assembled.

Introducing yourself into another person’s space is a delicate dance, and should be done with caution, respect, and sensitivity. The right streamlined collection of beauty products will fulfill your needs without causing alarm, lest you appear like a stage-four clinger. First and foremost, think of your skin. A soothing face wash (Context) and moisturizer (Kiehl’s) will arm you against the latest of nights and the most aggressive of radiators. When it comes to hair, your significant other will likely have shampoo, but conditioner may be absent. (Why don’t men use conditioner?!) Davines’s moisturizing formula will counteract winter frizz, while also speeding up your time under the hair dryer. (Here, the Cricket’s quiet engine will go almost undetected.) As for makeup, think basic, basic, basic. Color-correcting tinted moisturizer, mascara, and a rosy tint for lips and cheeks will provide a faux woke-up-like-this glow when you need it most. A good rule of thumb to keep in mind through the editing process: The smaller, the better, and the more unisex the packaging, the more likely your S.O. will be interested in borrowing it. What could be better than a couple who grows more beautiful together?

What’s the Secret to K-Pop Beauty? One Vogue Editor Gets a Hallyu Star Makeover in Seoul

kpop makeover

“Please hold still,” one woman tells me, lifting a still-smoking match to my eyes. Nearby, another begins sharpening a small pink-handled knife that will slice the tops and sides off my brows. To my left, a man with immaculate bleach-blond hair sits, looking bored, listlessly thumbing through his iPhone, as three attendants swab his face with no less than 10 serums, emulsions, and creams. But no matter—he’ll be back here tomorrow to do it all over again.

Welcome to the world of K-pop beauty, where it takes three hours to apply your everyday face. Yes, three hours—or so I’m told when I call up reception at Jennyhouse, which has quickly become the go-to salon for Korean celebs since it opened in 2002. These days, of course, it’s also a destination for fans who would love to look just like their idols—including Chinese couples who fly here to get K-styled for wedding photos. And so, out of curiosity, I, too, book an appointment for a complete Hallyu star makeover on a recent trip to Seoul.

There are now three Jennyhouse locations in Cheongdam, the city’s most rarefied neighborhood, but I head to Olive, a two-story violet town house that’s said to draw the most stars (that’s no lie, by the way—on a recent Friday, I sat next to Jessi, the Lucky J rapper, and VIXX boy-band members Hyuk and Ravi). Though K-pop is known for its wild, over-the-top visuals, makeup artist Hee Jeong Lee tells me that these days her idol clients and their fans are requesting a more pared-down face.

“We used to do a heavier, more made-up aesthetic, but now when people come to our shop and ask for the Korean style, it’s more of a natural look,” she says, pointing to two of her clients, actresses Lee Min-jung and Song Ji-hyo, whose faces are most often requested by guests. Paging through hairstylist Jongsoo Lim’s portfolio, it’s clear that a more laid-back style is also the key to a K-pop mane. “Right now, it’s about a light wave instead of over-the-top glamour,” he says. “Over the past four or five years, we’ve moved toward the kind of look you could do yourself at home.”

So what does it take to get that not-quite-natural look? Anywhere from two to five hours—still. For Hallyu stars, a flawless complexion comes first and foremost. So we begin with a thorough double cleansing with oil and cream face washes, followed by 20 minutes of layering moisturizers: first toner, then essence, then serum, then emulsion, then cream, then more emulsion, and so on, swept and dotted lightly across the face with plush sponges and cotton pads. Vaseline is smothered on my lips, then Lee takes a dollop of heavy sun cream and emulsion, mixed together on the back of the hand with a palette knife, and swabs it directly onto my cheeks. Three dots of highlighter go under each eye, then a base, more emulsion—“It helps create a smooth texture”—and a thick coat of foundation. During 10 minutes of vigorous concealing (of stray spots, freckles, dark circles, and lines I never knew I had), I remember how, the day before, a stranger told me I had great skin—apparently not, by K-pop standards.

The secret here, I learn, is extreme layering: Lashes are curled twice with that smoking match, then topped with individual falsies and curled again with mascara. Light dustings of contour are topped off with emulsion, then dusted a second and third time. The eyeliner alone takes about 15 minutes: pencil, liquid, and gel, painstakingly shaped into an angular black wing. But once I reach Lim’s hair station, things move faster. I spend only 40 minutes in the chair, moving through rapid curling, texturizing at the root with a round brush, and ample sprays of Elnett. Though I’d originally suggested a wild updo or crazy cut, this would, I learn, be antithetical to the idol way. “You want to look fresh and pretty,” Lim chides as he sweeps my hair into a long ponytail with a hint of volume.

After carefully placing and re-placing a single wavy curl that falls by my face, we’re done—et voilà! Though up close I look strange and too heavily made up, in the soft glow of the salon’s incandescent lights, I feel K-pop pretty. Plus, as my own family tells me later that day, “You’ve never looked more Korean.” As far as K-styling goes, I’d call that an unqualified success.

Inside a Beauty Editor’s Insane Skin-Care Routine

2015-10-16-1445036553-1479575-23ashleyskin.w529.h352.jpg

By Ashley Weatherford

I once dedicated a solid 45 minutes each morning to my beauty routine, and that was a problem. So when I finally cut my embarrassingly elaborate skin-care routine down to ten minutes this summer, it was a point of pride. My goal: perfect, luminous skin.

I begin my streamlined morning lineup with a few pumps of Phace’s Detoxifying Cleanser, a non-foaming cleanser specifically enhanced with a pH slightly lower than our skin’s natural pH. I learned about Phace when the brand’s Harvard-trained founder paid the Cut a visit last year. There are a few very nerdy reasons why you want a cleaner with a low pH. At the top of the list: hydrated skin, and fewer blemishes and wrinkles down the road. It’s a bit of a mystery why the low pH helps protect skin better, but one plausible theory is since skin that stays in the low-pH range is more acidic, it naturally fights acne-causing bacteria while preserving the face’s native moisture barrier.

After I cleanse, I rub on the most aptly named product in existence: Good Genes. The serum by Sunday Riley is fueled by lactic acid and makes my skin instantly glow. It has a pungent, spicy smell that turns off many, but surprisingly, not me. Maybe all you need to know is that Helen Mirren is a fan.

I usually let Good Genes marinate on my skin for a few minutes. Then, if I’m feeling undermoisturized, I give a few blots of Pestle and Mortar’s Hyaluronic Acid Serum around my chin and hairline, where I sometimes become uncharacteristically dry (my skin is generally oily). Pestle and Mortar is the brainchild of an Irish biochemist, her skin-care guru sister, and her photographer husband, who wanted to help people look Photoshopped IRL. So far, my experience looks promising.

For my eyes, I’ve most recently turned to a gnarly skin-care brand that employs technology used on astronauts in outer space. Skin Space Defence Bright Eye Lift Gel is a clear solution that loses its semi-solid shape as soon as it touches my skin. It melts and becomes oily, like cold bacon fat thrown in a frying pan. The story behind the brand goes something like this: A British plastic surgeon teamed up with space scientists to create a healing salve for post-op patients in his practice. The space scientists tapped into their knowledge of skin-care ingredients astronauts use when exposed to the age-accelerating elements of space, and before long, a beauty brand was born. I can’t say for sure why I use this product (my eyes don’t need a “lift” just yet), but if I’m being honest, there’s an amusement factor when I think about a bunch of rocket scientists huddled together to launch a cosmetic product.

Right after I tend to my eyes, I slap on Philosophy’s Renewed Hope in a Jar SPF 30 mixed with a dab of every makeup artist’s (and Kardashian’s) holy-grail product, Kevyn Aucoin’s Sensual Skin Enhancer, which completes my morning ritual.

Nighttime is a much more complicated story. First, I remove my makeup with some sort of wipe. Recently, that’s been makeup artist Lauren Napier’s individually packaged and guaranteed-to-never-dry-out wipes. Lauren’s worked with the likes of Zoë Kravitz, Anne Hathaway, and Lady Gaga, so you could say she knows a thing or several about cutting through serious face paint. She’s also worked with Drake, even though everyone knows that Aubrey is naturally beautiful.

I typically wash my face again with Phace. As soon as I pat dry, I swipe Pixi’s Glow Tonic over my face with a cotton round. Glow Tonic is new to the States, but in its native England, it’s a bit of a rock star. The glycolic acid in the formula gently smooths over rough spots and the occasional dark mark over time. It’s basically the budget version of Biologique Recherche’s P-50. A delightfully named Skin Perfecting Liquid from Paula’s Choice completes my acid application for the night. In there, you can find a watery concentration of 2 percent salicylic acid, which ensures that my pores stay clear and my blemishes remain buried.

It’s a waiting game of 30 minutes before I move to the next step. Though, truthfully, some nights, this is where the train ends. But if I’m being diligent, I follow the salicylic acid with Paula’s Choice Resist Anti-Aging 1% Retinol Booster. The 30-minute waiting period nullifies any irritation that might arise when using an acid and a retinol at the same time. It’s a method I’ve tested through trial and error because it will sting a bit if I don’t wait. I don’t use retinols all the time, but I try to sometimes, if only because it’s one of the best products a person can use to avoid wrinkles later in life.

Related: How to Look Amazing in Under 10 Minutes

Immediately after the retinol, I dab on 111 Skin’s Celestial Black Diamond Contour Gel. Slightly thicker than the eye gel I use in the morning, it’s supposed to help stimulate the production of collagen, which, in return, will help diminish the appearance of dark circles. I’ve only just started to use the gel, but here’s to wishful thinking.

Finally, I finish off the night with La Prairie’s Skin Caviar Luxe Cream Sheer. Yes, it’s expensive, and yes, if you agree with Kathleen, the Cut’s senior beauty editor, it might smell like granny cream, but I love that it makes my skin feel really soft and plump in the morning. When I’m not being completely overindulgent, I’ll use Laneige’s Water Sleeping Mask instead.

And speaking of masks, lately Dr. Jart’s Deep Hydration sheet mask is what I like every now and then, when my skin feels especially parched. I actually swear by sheet masks for hydration. Unlike traditional masks, the cloth in a sheet mask traps moisture so skin feels especially supple.

But will I keep this routine going throughout the fall? Who knows? Maybe I’ll Kondo more to add some simplicity to my life.

6 Surprising Lessons From Makeup Artist Lisa Eldridge’s New Beauty Book

lisa eldridge book

Today, Lisa Eldridge, the London-based makeup artist and YouTube sensation, is releasing her first book, Face Paint: The Story of Makeup (Abrams Image), a meditation on the history of cosmetics and the women who wore it best. Beginning with caches of red ochre found in South African caves, which were used as prehistoric makeup, Face Paint takes us through the ancient origins of modern trends—a bold red lip, a slick of black liner—and connects them back to beauty’s present landscape. From the invention of the world’s first mascara to the backstory behind Lauren Hutton’s famous gap-toothed grin, here are six surprising things we learned from the book that have us feeling inspired to dive into our beauty kits.

1. In Ancient Greece, around 800 B.C., Athenian women mixed burned cork, antimony, and soot to concoct a simple brow powder, used to thicken their arches and create the appearance of a unibrow. (The Romans also favored the singular style.) Centuries later, around 1917, New Yorker T. L. Williams purportedly caught his sister Mabel mixing burned cork with petroleum jelly to darken her lashes, which inspired him to launch Lash-Brow-Ine—one of the first mascaras—and his iconic beauty company, Maybelline. Rumor has it that the mascara helped Mabel win her boyfriend back.

2. From the 1500s, French women began carrying gilded tins filled with mouches, small black patches used to ornament their faces and conceal blemishes—think Marie Antoinette and the 18th-century court of Versailles. Made from silk, velvet, satin, or taffeta in heart or circle shapes, their placement was coded: Right cheek meant married; left, engaged. Mistresses wore one by the corner of the eye, while a mouche near the mouth showed you were single.

3. Around 1902, Helena Rubinstein launched her famous Crème Valaze in Australia with the claim that one Dr. Lykusky had concocted the cream with herbs grown in the Carpathian mountains. Years later, she revealed the true recipe to her secretary: mineral oil, vegetable oil, and lanolin, which she scented with pine bark, water lilies, and lavender. Ten pennies procured all the ingredients, but Helena charged 7 shillings and 7 pence because, in her own words, “Women won’t buy anything that cheap!”

4. Though Ancient Egyptian murals had depicted men and women in thick black liner—and archaeologists had found carved ivory cases with burned almond kohl in burial tombs—it was the 1912 discovery of Nefertiti’s bust that brought the exaggerated cat-eye back to life. With the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb in 1923 and the first public exhibition of the limestone-and-stucco head a year later, Egyptomania gripped the world. Elizabeth Taylor’s iconic portrayal of Cleopatra in 1963 only sealed the deal, and dark eye makeup has stayed in style ever since.

5. Discovered by Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, a young Lauren Hutton started modeling for Richard Avedon and Irving Penn in the mid-’60s. Hutton would do her own makeup for shoots, and initially tried to hide the gap in her teeth with mortician’s wax and a cap, which kept falling out. Quickly, she learned to embrace her crooked smile, which helped her secure a record 27 Vogue covers, a landmark modeling contract with Revlon, and paved the way for many winning gap-toothed girls—Lara Stone, Georgia May Jagger—to come.

6. Fashion designer Barbara Hulanicki’s Biba label began selling Technicolor makeup in 1970, revolutionizing the decade’s look with blush, shadows, and face glosses in a staggering range of trippy colors, from acid blue to mustard yellow to shimmering copper. Not surprisingly, David Bowie and his alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, were reportedly fans. At the time, the factory couldn’t believe Hulanicki’s requested colors—but then her first brown lipstick sold out in 30 minutes. Two years later, Hulanicki further broadened the beauty boundaries when she debuted the first makeup range designed for women with darker skin. Needless to say, the rest is beauty history.

The French Girl Beauty Secret That’s Worth Trying This Season

micellar water

French women are globally recognized for the je ne sais quoi of their “I woke up like this” tousled hair and flawless skin. But when it comes to those glowing complexions, anyone who has visited a Paris pharmacy can tell you their secret: micellar water, the cult beauty product that hydrates, cleanses, and gently removes makeup without overdrying, which has been a Gallic go-to for decades.

“It’s the modern soap,” explains New York City facialist (and Paris export) Isabelle Bellis, who regularly uses it in her bespoke treatments. Acting like a multitasking solution, most formulas don’t require additional rinsing with water, which can further strip sensitive skin in the colder months. Bellis, however, uses it almost like a toner, swiping a soaked cotton ball over the skin after cleansing, then following it with a gentle mist of thermal water, which contains more nourishing minerals and fewer chemicals than what comes from the tap.

The beloved product, which has become increasingly available stateside in recent years, has been spotted in the kits of backstage makeup artists and the bathrooms of models worldwide, with Bioderma’s Sensibio H20 and Orlane’s brightening, antioxidant-rich formula topping the must-have list. But micellar water’s magic properties don’t stop there. Paris-based makeup artist Violette also relies on it to master a sleek cat-eye. “To perfect the line, I use it on a Q-tip and clean up the edges,” she says. “No need to rinse—it’s superfast and efficient.” Enough said. Here are the nine formulas worth considering for your own medicine cabinet.

Janelle Monae’s Paris Fashion Week Hair Owns Our Best Beauty List

Paris Fashion Week Spring 2016 was filled with major moments, including the scenic airport-themed Chanel show to the mini “Game of Thrones” reunion with Emilia Clarke and Jason Momoa. But we believe Janelle Monae’s many, many hairstyles stole the spotlight.

The “Yoga” singer was spotted out and about wearing different hairdos to accentuate what she described to Vogue as her “growing, evolving” style. Having worked with Monae since her debut studio album “The ArchAndroid” in 2010, celebrity hairstylist Caprice Green told The Huffington Post that the two always “start out with some sort of game plan” when discussing hairstyle for Fashion Week. “However, it doesn’t always go as planned,” said Green. “The clothes from the designers sort of determined the look each day.”

From her signature pompadour topped with a cherry-red Kristina Dragomir heart cap to a beautiful beehive adorned with Chanel accessories, Monae and her hairstylist have pushed the boundaries on what’s considered to be “natural hair.”

Scroll down to see Monae’s hairstyles from Paris Fashion Week and to learn what Green considered when creating each look.

Artist’s Illustrations Capture The Simple Beauty Of Everyday Love

For the past five years, artist Nidhi Chanani has been working on a series of illustrations that show the small, ordinary moments that make up a romantic relationship.

The collection, aptly titled “Everyday Love,” serves as a reminder that love is about more than grand gestures and big milestones.

“Every day has moments of love and it’s easy to forget to pause and appreciate them,” she told The Huffington Post. “Each piece I create is inspired by a moment with my husband, a dream we discuss or a memory of ours.”

(Story continues after photos)

“My work is drawn from my perspective,” Chanani added. “I’m a brown woman in love with a white man. I also draw gay couples. I make an effort to show the love of mixed race couples and diverse relationships.”

5 Beauty Subscription Boxes Made Especially For Women Of Color

Target, Ulta and Walgreen’s have expanded their beauty aisles in the past three years to include more makeup, hair care and skincare options for women of color. But even these major retailers fall short of meeting every need. That’s where beauty subscription boxes fill a void.

Beauty subscription boxes have completely transformed the way we shop. Instead of wasting money on foundations that might match our skin tone or styling creams that may give us pillow-soft curls, these membership services are a guilt-free way to sample these products.

While there are plenty of beauty subscription boxes sold online, very few are curated with women of color in mind, or come packaged with more than one sample that addresses their concerns. Thankfully, we’ve come across a select few that have managed to get it right, including CurlBox and the new Essence Beauty Box.

According to Essence Beauty and Style Director Pamela Edwards Christiani, “getting these products into the hands of women who may not have known where to find them or knew that they were for them,” was a major reason why the publication finally entered the realm of beauty subscription boxes.

She added, “Here we are with years of beauty experience. We touch and feel everything. We want our audience to have that same experience.”

Want to try beauty subscription boxes? Here are five that cater specifically to women of color.

Watch Out, Sephora. H&M Beauty Is Coming For You.

When we first heard that H&M was launching a beauty line, we pictured the check-out counters of the Swedish retailer being updated with a few makeup basics. As in, stacks of lipstick, eyeshadow and nail polish in the typical red, pink and nude shades. Oh were we wrong!

The new beauty line recently debuted in 900 stores worldwide and online, with over 700 products to fulfill just about every cosmetic, haircare and skincare need. We’re talking velvety eyeshadows in matte, shimmer and metallic finishes, over 160 nail polish colors with cheeky names such as Lifejacket and rich body creams loaded with hydrating ingredients like shea butter and vitamin E

The fast-fashion retailer has established a cult following thanks to their basic tees and trendy designer collaborations. H&M Beauty concept designer Sara Wallander said in a press release that the new line was “an opportunity to be inventive and creative, and to have fun with colors.”

Everything is priced under $ 25, and H&M definitely didn’t hold back when it came to offering beauty products with rich pigments, long-lasting formulas and sophisticated packaging. And it’s all displayed atop sleek beauty stations that rival Sephora’s, enticing beauty mavens and mavericks to touch, try and buy it all.

Want to know what’s worth fighting for in the H&M Beauty department? Check out our top five editors’ picks below!

More cherished than gold are the Jewels of Kinfairlie, and only the worthiest of men may fight for their love…The Laird of Kinfairlie has unmarried sisters, each a gem in her own right. And he has no choice but to see them all wed in haste. Lady Madeline's heart is not for sale…especially not to a notorious outlaw like Rhys FitzHenry. Yet Madeline's hand has been sold, to none other than this battle-weary warrior with a price on his head. A more dutiful maiden might cede to the Laird's command and meekly accept her fate, but Madeline has never been obedient. She decides to run away, though she never dreams that Rhys will pursue her. She does not expect this taciturn man to woo her with fanciful stories, much less that each of his enthralling tales will reveal a scar upon his shielded soul. She never imagines that a man like Rhys could imperil her own heart while revealing so little of his own feelings. When Rhys' past threatens his future, Madeline takes a leap of faith. She dares to believe him innocent – and risks her own life to pursue a passion more priceless than the rarest gem.

Venezuela has won more international beauty pageants than any other country. With 6 Miss International crowns, 6 Miss World crowns, and 6 Miss Universe crowns, what is it that makes Venezuelan beauty queens so special? Beauty Factory follows five contestants over the course of four months as they compete for the coveted Miss Venezuela crown; offering an intimate look into the world of beauty, and the sometimes-ugly things people do to be a part of it. This film will take you behind the scenes as the girls are told how much weight they must lose, how big their breasts should be, what diet fits them, the length and color of their hair, their gym routine and even what plastic surgeries they need to get. For many of them, the ultimate goal isn’t to be crowned Miss Venezuela, or even Miss Universe. These are smart, savvy women using their beauty as a launchpad for something greater. But how far will these girls go to succeed?

The 10 Best Beauty Looks: Week of August 31, 2015

Kate Bosworth

It wasn’t just at the VMAs—the week’s best beauty looks celebrated the transformative power of a standout detail from Manhattan to Santa Monica. Rihanna pushed the pendulum back toward ladylike palettes with an iced lilac lipstick that was thoughtfully matched to her silk robe, while Lily Aldridge took sunny nudes to Bond girl heights with a thick sixties flick and Grecian braids. Also recalibrating their signature look, Gwen Stefani upgraded her matte red mouth with a wash of fresh pink blush and Vanessa Hudgens coaxed her waist-length waves into fuzzy braids. Not that everyone was in the mood for a makeover. Leave it to Rosie Huntington-Whiteleys unfailing equation of bronzed skin, stained lips, and golden highlights to make the ultimate beauty statement for the new season: When you’ve nailed the perfect summer look, there’s nothing wrong with a few encores.

Are Brick Red Lipstick, Bare Midriffs, and Bantu Knots Back? The Best ’90s Beauty Signatures, Then and Now

fka twigs bantu knots

With today’s launch of Vogue Runway, the nineties have taken a strong hold on Vogue.com—but this summer, a mere look at our favorite street style stars is enough to confirm that the decade’s wave-making beauty trends are enjoying a major resurgence. Just last night Ciara set the MTV Video Music Awards abuzz by lobbing off nearly a foot of her long black hair. The style may have been new for the singer, but its architectural lines appeared on the red carpet almost 20 years earlier, when a young Reese Witherspoon found blunt-cut perfection in a nearly identical sleek long bob. And that’s not the only era-signature that’s making a comeback: Brick red lipstick—a makeup go-to for major nineties icons like Drew Barrymore—has also worked its way back into heavy rotation, acting as a tough but feminine update to the jeans and T-shirt equation or a modern counterpoint to bright cocktail dress (see: Joan Smalls).

Further evidence of the decade’s influence can be found in the crop top renaissance. The abbreviated style, beloved by supermodels from Stephanie Seymour to Naomi Campbell, is making sculpted abs a necessity for It girls like Gigi Hadid. And even the most extreme nineties risk takers are receiving a nod from today’s beauty chameleons. Gwen Stefani donned the multiple bun trend in the ’90s, a look now regularly sported by FKA twigs with her signature braided knots. And Linda Evangelista, who famously quadrupled her rate by cutting her hair, has found a fan in Rihanna, who seemed to reference the supermodel’s fiery, intentionally superficial red crop when conceiving her own shocking lineup of shape-shifting looks earlier this season. After all, in the words of Evangelista, “Any reaction is a good reaction as long as they notice.” From romantic, face-framing tendrils to the lip color that defined a decade, six reasons why everything old is new again.

Does Taylor Swift Look Better As a Brunette? Her “Wildest Dreams” Beauty Transformation

taylor vmas

Tonight at the MTV VMA pre-show, Taylor Swift debuted her latest music video, “Wildest Dreams,” which features many of the singer’s calling cards: a catchy hook, her mile-long limbs, and self-described “red lips and rosy cheeks.” Notably absent is Swift’s signature golden blonde hair. In its place: A chin-length, Elizabeth Taylor–esque raven bob. As she dances through the safari, lounging with lions, running alongside zebras, and romancing costar Scott Eastwood, her waves blow in the breeze, making us wonder if she should ditch the wig and commit to a permanent incarnation of the deeper hue this fall. Welcome to the dark side, Swift.

Fifth Harmony’s Views On Beauty Are The Perfect Reminder That You’re ‘Worth It’

After launching into stardom straight from “The X Factor,” the girls of Fifth Harmony have seen their share of fame. Luckily, they haven’t gotten caught up in the ridiculous beauty standards that come with it.

In a “come-as-you-are type of editorial,” the girl group opened up to Teen Vogue about all things beauty. Wearing minimal makeup at the shoot, the five singers revealed how they stay confident in a society that constantly stresses the importance of physical qualities.

In her interview, 22-year-old Ally Brooke Hernandez explained she felt insecure for years (and sometimes still does), but the people she surrounds herself with help her feel confident.

“I started feeling more confident [recently] because of the people around me making me feel that way!” she said. “I’m still insecure and I’ll probably always be that way, but feeling support and love is so nice… and seeing other people embrace their natural beauty is fun, too.”

Normani Kordei, 19, dealt with insecurities growing up as well, especially when it came to her skin color. Now, she’s learned to embrace it.

“[Something] that’s been a big obstacle [for me] is that I’m African-American, and in the group, I’m the one [who] stands out because I’m darker complected,” she told Teen Vogue. “I find it to be beautiful now and I have security with myself, and I’m in this position to inspire young black girls and boys to do whatever they want despite their skin color.”

Teen Vogue also asked the singers what beauty meant to them. For 18-year-old Camila Cabello, beauty is more than skin-deep and comes in many forms.

“Beauty is the love you convey with your eyes… or when you cheer up a friend when they feel down, when you read a book you’re really excited about, when you make art you’re really excited about,” she told Teen Vogue

Lauren Jauregui, 19, echoed that sentiment, explaining that beauty ”comes from within and shines from within, because if you’re a beautiful person inside, people will automatically see that on the outside as well.”

There’s no doubt the group’s views on beauty are refreshing, and 18-year-old Dinah Jane Hansen summed them up best. She shut down unrealistic beauty standards while also calling into mind the girl group’s self-love hit “Reflection.”

“Growing up, I used to want to be the girl in the magazine, with a perfect face or body, and I’ve come to realize true beauty is what’s within,” she said. “It’s the girl that’s happy with her own reflection.”

Head over to Teen Vogue to read more of Fifth Harmony’s views on beauty and see more photos.

Is Gluten Hiding in Your Beauty Routine?

Buyers beware! There could be gluten hiding in your beauty regimen!

I learned this lesson recently and could not believe that I never stopped to think about it before. When I was diagnosed with celiac disease I cleaned out my kitchen completely. I got new groceries, new appliances, researched the best gluten-free products, and hunted online for the closest place to get a good gluten free-bagel (NYC people, you must visit Jennifer’s Way Bakery in the East Village!).

Unfortunately, I never stopped to think about my beauty routine and how products I use daily like soap, shampoo, and moisturizer could contain gluten. At first I thought, how could I miss this? How could I have risked accidental glutening?! But to be fair no doctor ever warned me of the potential risks, and on top of that it can actually be pretty difficult to discern whether or not there could be gluten in your soap or cosmetics. Instead of seeing something clearly gluten containing like “wheat” on the ingredient list it is more likely that you would see a name like “hydrolyzed vegetable protein,” which isn’t necessarily so obvious (at least to me!).

When I found out that a number of my products weren’t gluten free my initial reaction was panic and distress. I just couldn’t believe I never stopped to check. The fact that we often have to go to extreme lengths just to make sure our food is safe is a lot of work as it is, but now we have to worry about food, medications, AND cosmetics? Sometimes it really feels like gluten is hiding around every corner, and that gets pretty exhausting when you are just trying to lead a normal and healthy life. But, knowledge is power! And with that I set off investigating.

I started by consulting a friend of mine, a fellow celiac and a really amazing advocate for the gluten free community. She has been living with celiac disease for quite some time and is always helping me on my gluten-free journey. You may know her as Anti-Wheat Girl! Through her help and some online resources I learned that the general consensus from the medical community is that gluten absorbed through the skin should not be cause for concern among celiacs, but the chance of accidental ingestion and glutening is an issue.

The next step was to clean out my bathroom cabinet and replace the gluten-filled products with healthy gluten-free ones. At first it was really challenging to find products that were gluten-free. Speaking with company after company got really exhausting, especially when the answers weren’t definitive. Thankfully there are a number of companies with gluten free products out there who were happy to help and offered very clear answers. Mane ‘n Tail for example was incredibly helpful! I also discovered that Tarte, a cosmetic line easily found in Sephora, is completely gluten-free! I love their products to begin with, so I was thrilled to learn that they are safe!

Immediately after cleaning out the cabinets I headed to Sephora to stock up on Tarte. At checkout I was offered some free samples which I normally decline since I have a million allergies, but this time was different! The free sample I got at checkout was a completely gluten-free skin brightening and exfoliating treatment from the brand Tata Harper. I was so happy to have received a sample that for once looked like it was made for me! All of the Tata Harper products are made in Vermont with no animal testing, are certified vegan, organic, free of toxins, artificial fragrances, synthetics, GMOs and gluten. I haven’t tried any of their products yet but I am excited to get started testing their samples — I only wish I had gotten more!

This lesson was certainly a tough one to learn, but I’m grateful to have realized it when I did. If you’ve had trouble finding gluten free cosmetics and beauty products, or if you’ve had some great experiences, I would love to know. Share your story, frustrations, excitement, and favorite gluten free brands with me at hannah.crane@nyu.edu.

My All Time Favorite Beauty Products and Why

Over the years I have tested and tossed a countless number of products. I like to keep up with the current trends and I enjoy testing out new things to find those hidden gems. More often than not, however, end up going back to my tried and true products that I have been using for years. I call these products my classics, and as long as they are on the market they will remain in my beauty arsenal forever. These products have never let me down and have been beneficial to me in my skin care, hair care and over all makeup routine. Below are my all time favorite products and why I love them so much.

Clearasil Daily Clear Daily Face Wash: 6.5 OZ

This face wash has worked wonders for me. It is better than any of the expensive face washes I have tried on the market. It is made from a gentle formula that is fragrance free and has never irritated my skin. I use it twice a day and it always leaves my skin feeling clean and soft.

Olay 4-in-1 Daily Facial Cloths, Normal Skin, 66 Count

These face clothes come in so handy when I’m traveling. They are convenient and work great. I never have to worry about spills in my luggage when using these. They lather up wonderfully and I can use the cloth to get a deeper scrub into my skin. I am always left with skin that feels soft, fresh and clean.

Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, 16.9-Ounce Jar

I style my hair often and unfortunately that means my hair is exposed to a lot of heat. I leave this mask in my hair for about 10-15 minutes twice a week and it helps put the moisture back in my hair and keeps it looking healthy and shiny.

Batiste Dry Shampoo, Clean and Classic, 6.73 Ounce

I definitely don’t wash my hair everyday. On the in-between days I like to use this dry shampoo to pull out the excess oils in my hair. I have used many dry shampoos and I have found this one to be the best. It doesn’t leave a build up and my hair looks and feels clean even on the days it isn’t washed.

Clarisonic Mia 1 Skin Cleansing System, White

I love this little machine. My skin has never been smoother or brighter. The motion of the bristles gently scrub away imperfections and dead skin. It keeps my pores clean and evens out the texture of my skin. It comes with its own cleaners but I use the cleansers of my choice and still get amazing results.

Tweezerman Stainless Steel Slant Tweezer, Pink

I am a huge advocate of getting your eyebrows professionally done. We all know, however, that sometimes we just don’t get around to it and are left with growing caterpillars above our eyes. For these desperate times I use the Tweezerman Slant Tweezers. These tweezers have the ability to grab hold of the tiniest hairs that I used to struggle with using other brands. They are extremely precise, even on the finest of hairs.

The Balm Mary-lou Manizer Aka The Luminizer Shimmer, Highlighter and Eyeshadow, with Twinbeauty Brush

Highlighting and contouring has been around forever but has recently become a huge trend. Beauty bloggers across the world post instructional videos on how to get the perfect highlight and contour. This product has been a wonderful highlight for me and I believe it is good for any skin tone. It leaves a golden look to the skin providing it with a healthy glow. A little goes a long way with this product so be careful not to overdo it.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment, Dry, Cracked and Irritated Skin Protectant, 14 Ounce

I have suffered from extremely dry skin my whole life. This is a condition that seems even more apparent in the winter months. After I shower I apply this cream all over my body for some dry skin relief. I even carry some in my bag to apply on my hands throughout the day.

Crest 3D White Luxe Whitestrips Professional Effects – Teeth Whitening Kit 20 Treatments

No more $ 400 whitening sessions at the dentist for me. For the past few years I have been using Crest White Strips every 12 to 18 months. The results are always mind blowing. After using these I notice I get a ton of complements on how white my smile is. I no longer have to deal with messy trays and goopy gels. These strips adhere nicely to my teeth and I only have to leave them on for 30 minutes a day. When the treatment is over I am always so impressed with the results.

Beauty Blender Original Blender Sponge – 0.15 oz

I know I talk about this product a lot but I cannot reiterate enough how helpful the beauty blender has been for my own application as well as the application of makeup on my clients. If you want airbrushed results without spending all that money on an airbrush machine I suggest giving this product a try. You wont regret it. I love how smooth my makeup looks after using the beauty blender to apply my foundation.

Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer with Broad Spectrum SPF 15 Normal, 4.0 fl oz

I have been using this product for well over 15 years now. Even when I try to swap out for some of the fancier products I still always come back to this. It does not flake like other moisturizers can and it looks great on the skin with or without makeup. I use this lotion every time I wash my face and it has never failed me. The formula is gentle, it doesn’t clog my pores and it leaves my skin looking hydrated all day.

The Models Redefining American Beauty Today

american models

In the modeling industry, America has always had its share of superstars—Jerry Hall, Cindy Crawford, and Karlie Kloss, anyone?—but in recent history, it’s begun to feel like the influx of international beauties has overwhelmed the presence of homegrown talent. But just like that, a new generation of “Born in the U.S.A.” beauties has begun to dominate the industry. Effortlessly cool best friends Lexi Boling and Binx Walton have led the charge, followed by the rise of Instagirls like Kendall Jenner, Hailey Baldwin, and Gigi Hadid; Texan Vanessa Moody was among the season’s top walkers; Californian newcomer Alice Metza is already a Prada regular; and Midwesterner Grace Hartzel emerged as the campaign star to beat, starring in ads for Calvin Klein, Tod’s, Valentino, and Hugo Boss.

According to Jeff and Mary Clarke of Mother Model Management—the scouts who first discovered both Kloss and Hartzel—the resurgence of the American model all comes back to the charisma of the girls themselves. “There will always be something undeniable about a fresh American beauty,” says Mary. “They are inspiring to young teenage girls in middle America, to women who find them more relatable, and to the casting directors and designers who find them a refreshing image to build on.” Given the renewed focus on models as celebrities, it makes sense that the American girls who resonate are all blessed in the personality department. As the definition of all-American expands, the models selected are beginning to reflect the nation’s variety, as well. “It is an exciting time in the fashion world,” says Mary. “We are happy to see the term American beauty embrace more cultural and ethnic diversity.” Get to know eleven of the models representing the new era of what it means to be all-American.

The 10 Best Beauty Instagrams of the Week: Britney Spears, North West, and More

Mary Helen Bowers

If the promise of fall’s first crisp nights has many of us packing away our sundresses to make room for a new statement coat, there’s nothing like a quick scan of our Instagram feeds to inspire us to truly savor those last fleeting days of summer. For model Janice Alida, that meant cooling off under a pool waterfall in Whistler, Canada, while ballerina Mary Helen Bowers struck an arabesque in the surf. Of course, what’s the sunny season without the joy of fresh local produce? Florence Welch celebrated a sun-soaked day in Oslo, with a crown crafted out of fresh-picked flowers, and Christy Turlington’s bowl of ripe heirloom tomatoes motivated us to head to the farmers market. But leave it to North West and her cousin Penelope—wearing matching slick topknots—to live in the here and now like only children can: Mesmerized by a fellow mermaid in St. Bart’s, it’s safe to say that school days couldn’t be further from their minds.

The Cult of Cute: How Korean Beauty Is Changing the Face of Your Vanity Table

cute korean beauty

Inside a glossy, perfectly round tomato sits the smooth, creamy surface of a complexion-brightening face mask. A sullen panda bear holds the contents of a cooling-on-contact eye gel. A miffed bunny rabbit contains a pitch-perfect apricot lip tint. Welcome to the Korean beauty shopping experience. “They’re actually really good products,” says Charlotte Cho, cofounder of Soko Glam, one of three K-beauty import websites profiled in the September issue of Vogue that are curating the best of what the country has to offer. Dressed in crisp summer whites with a slim gold chain around her neck, the 30-year-old entrepreneur is combing the aisles of Manhattan’s Tony Moly—which, at first glance has more in common with Toys “R” Us than Sephora. “I have this,” she says, picking up a bright pink Velcro bow designed to hold hair out of your face while you wash off your makeup. Everything in the store, from the mustache-shaped wrinkle-reducing patches to the scrub resembling Pop Art–worthy lips is knee-weakeningly adorable. And if the history of Korean beauty trends has proven anything, your vanity table is about to get a lot cuter, too.

For all of the forward-thinking makeup and skin care advancements on American and European soil, from stem cell facials to lengthening organic mascara, South Korea’s wave-making influence has become impossible to ignore. Famous for popularizing BB cream, sheet masks, and facial essences, the country has cemented its international audience: This summer alone, Lancôme openly credited the inspiration for one of its biggest launches to date, the Miracle Cushion Liquid Compact, to the nation’s foundation technology, and Estée Lauder recently tapped K-beauty blogger Irene Kim to act as a global beauty contributor. And if South Koreans take the subject seriously (this is, after all, the birthplace of the ten-step skin care routine and home to the world’s highest rate of plastic surgery per capita), their packaging is judged by an entirely different rubric.

Turning over a banana-shaped sleeping pack in her hands, Cho explains, “Korean shoppers are super savvy [about beauty products], and they’re not loyal to a single brand, so companies have to make something that really grabs your attention to stand out.” She should know. To keep her three-year-old site up-to-the-minute relevant, it’s her business to not only test the contents of every jar, packet, and pig, but to determine what will sell. Her forthcoming book, The Little Book of Skincare: Korean Beauty Secrets for Healthy, Glowing Skin (due out in November), even chronicles the cultural obsession in a section titled “Cute Is Not Overrated.” “If you’re going to have to look at something several times a day,” she writes, “it might as well make you smile.”

Of course, innovation is the true father of the doll-house-as-hand-cream phenomenon. With heavy investment in research and development, South Korean companies like Etude House, Skinfood, and PeriPera require as little as six months to take a product from conception to consumer. “They’re focusing on what’s next,” says Cho, which enables brands to look past creating an heirloom-worthy jewel box compact in favor of the kind of limited-edition packaging that incites sneakerhead levels of hysteria among its collectors. Even Cho has woebegone tales of missing out on a set of blotting papers stored within a sleepy kitten.

It’s a template that strikes a chord with just as many Americans. Around the Vogue offices more editors are likely to stop dead in their tracks over a $ 5 set of hair rollers fashioned as foam strawberries than they are for a $ 400 serum. And companies from Urban Outfitters to Ulta are paying attention, stocking cartoonish face creams and blushes adorned in dinosaur drawings next to cult-classic American and European stalwarts. This month, we’ve taken the liberty of combing some of our favorite K-beauty retailers stateside for the most charming products that will turn your powder room into a playroom—because above all, shouldn’t beauty be fun?

Is Tea the New Juice? How the Original Beauty Blend Is Making a Major Comeback

wellness beauty teas

Another day, another I’ll-have-what-she’s-having elixir. And yet, in the midst of activated-charcoal tonics, slow-simmered bone broths, and nut milks spiked with turmeric, the most compelling health brew of the moment isn’t exactly new. Tea, naturally rich in antioxidants and low in sugar, is experiencing a major fashion and wellness renaissance—and if a quick look around is any indication, it may be poised to become the next green juice.

In recent seasons, models have declared allegiance to energy-boosting herbal blends backstage, with Kendall Jenner professing her love for Kusmi Tea’s BB Detox, a mix of green tea, maté, and guarana, among other ingredients. Meanwhile, matcha—the powdered bright-green tea that appeals to purists and the whole of Instagram—has given rise to cafés like Chalait, a jewel box in Manhattan’s West Village; you can also find it on the menu at the nearby Equinox (virtuous) and in a new custard pie at Brooklyn’s Four & Twenty Blackbirds (deliciously less so). And among those shaping how we think about beauty today—from Reiki-practicing facialists to herb-focused shopkeepers committed to impeccable sourcing—it’s increasingly top of mind.

“Beauty tea is the next wave,” says Jessica Richards, owner of Brooklyn boutique Shen, known for its curated mix of natural-focused skin care and in-house facials. For a glowing complexion, she says, “It goes back to what you eat”—and drink. Richards regularly brews Egyptian licorice tea, citing its anti-inflammatory properties, and starting this week, she’s stocking the new Sleepy Cow tea from the U.K. brand (and Soho House favorite) Cowshed. The elegantly packaged lemon-chamomile blend, developed with the London-based Joe’s Tea Co., will be on offer post-treatment at Shen this fall for an extra dose of calm.

In the meantime, why not try facialist Negin Niknejad’s Love Potion? Inspired by her cosmically connected client, jewelry designer Pamela Love, the tea—made with heirloom roses, violet, nettle, cardamom, and other poetically charged ingredients—is one of four variations available as part of her JustBe skin-care line. Niknejad, in the midst of a three-year apprenticeship with an herbalist, also creates custom blends to support immune health and aid sleep. According to Niknejad, technique is everything: “I always recommend to steep your teas overnight,” she says of combining boiling water and herbs in a large Mason jar before refrigerating it the next morning. “Once you make an infusion”—as opposed to a quick-brewed cup—“that’s when it’s actually medicinal.”

Ritual is essential to this new wave of tea-drinkers, from Niknejad, who recently hosted a full-moon tea gathering at her New York City studio, to Baelyn Elspeth, a Los Angeles native who leads Taoist-inspired tea ceremonies in dreamy locales (Venice Beach, cedar forests), where flower crowns and drums occasionally make an appearance. At New York’s CAP Beauty, a wellness boutique in the West Village, the sensorial aspects of tea extend to its facials, which often incorporate chamomile and green tea infusions. Later this fall, the company will launch a private-label organic matcha, which entails its own meditative ritual. Expect in-store tastings, along with handsome teacups by local ceramist Romy Northover.

It follows that cleanse diehards have moved on to “teatoxing,” which makes some occasionally questionable weight-loss claims. “I don’t know about teatoxes,” says Frank Lipman, M.D., the New York integrative medicine expert who is no stranger to cleanses (his two-week version is a recurring topic of conversation in the Vogue offices), but he stands behind tea’s numerous benefits. “You get slightly different antioxidants and catechins and polyphenols” in different types, says Lipman, who drinks his way through the spectrum: black and green tea by day; rooibos by night. “In South Africa, we all grew up with rooibos tea,” says the Johannesburg-born doctor. “[It] was, in a way, like a catch-all remedy.” And it’s once again having a major moment, popping up in Aloha’s new Beauty Tea (along with sea buckthorn berry and hibiscus flower), in Sakara’s Detox Tea (with rose petals and stomach-soothing linden flowers), and in the free-radical fighting Cocoa Rooibos blend from L.A. boutique Chay, developed with the medicinal tea atelier Wilwand.

Of course, there may be some logic to tea’s moderating effects on mood and late-afternoon cravings. “You start drinking a tea a day, and maybe you don’t need that second cup of coffee,” says CAP Beauty co-founder Cindy DiPrima. It’s certainly well worth clearing some space on your desk for The Office Blend, from the artisanal herb company Daphnis and Chloe, featuring irresistibly chic packaging by Nathalie Du Pasquier, the Milan-based artist and Memphis Group cofounder. Made with rosehip, Greek mountain tea, thyme flowers, and peppermint, it’s designed to enhance alertness—and weaning off cold brew has never tasted (or looked) so good.

The 10 Best Beauty Instagrams of the Week: Madonna, Alexa Chung, and More

beauty instagrams

From an open-air stretch to an impromptu frolic through crystal-clear waters, this week’s most memorable Instagrams were the stuff of sun-soaked reverie. Parisienne ballerina Dorothée Gilbert limbered up with a bit of poolside yoga—a vivid, ivy-coated chateau acting as the ideal backdrop for the dancer’s fair skin and brunette topknot; in Fiji, Joan Smalls paused for a moment of model-y reflection in view of a palm tree–freckled beach, her toned abs and languid pose inspiring a healthy cocktail of activity and tranquility. Constance Jablonski snapped a selfie from atop a stair-climbing donkey in the Greek Isles, showing off bare shoulders while shielding her complexion with an army green cap perched upon a mussed, golden bun. Also up for an adventure: Elizabeth von Thurn und Taxis, who spent the day kite surfing off the coast of Morocco, her slicked-back blonde accompanied by a swipe of blue “war paint” across her nose and cheeks for battling the waves. Always one to challenge the status quo, Madonna remained indoors while preparing for her upcoming Rebel Heart tour—but she wasn’t alone. A cadre of mannequin heads sporting perfectly blown-out blonde wigs and positioned along a row of baroque throw pillows seemed primed for a collective pre-concert snooze.

Fall Trends For The Home, Beauty, Fashion And Food

The fall season is just around the corner! In a few more weeks the weather will start to change, time for cozy sweaters and hot chocolate, changing leaves and all the other amazing things that the season brings every year.

It also means a crop of new trends across the lifestyle category. Whether you’re a foodie, fashion lover, beauty junkie or are planning an update to any space or spot at home, there are plenty of fresh ideas and new products for fall this year.

With fashion, color trends are at long last shifting from the bright and bold and soft pastel to a muted mix that lands a bit in between. Mustard yellow, toned down orange, and navy blue, along with what’s already arrived in full force, olive green. You don’t need to over-invest in a new wardrobe — just add a piece or two in. Select based on your existing items — for example, if you’ve got a ton of statement or pastel pink from past seasons, olive green or navy can pair well with it. Neutral tones will be back again but as a trend this color palette is starting to wane. Expect to see a lot of blush tones once more this season.

In terms of items, the heel has at long last shaken off the stiletto and sky high for chunkier, block styles and short kitten heels. It’ll still be a great year for flats of all kinds as well — the chunky loafer will be the most popular along with summer’s favorite, the pointed toe. The moto jacket is also at long last starting to transition out. Polished coats of all kinds will be the replacement, particularly the trench. Play with the trend with a chic print versus a solid, though there will be plenty of solid colors, too. Denim’s also getting an update — not just in the form of tops, skirts, etc. but jeans are loosening up again this season. Wide leg is the fresh look, boot cut and flares returning. In terms of accessories, structured bags, patchwork leather and suede are on trend this season. Suede is also the season’s update to leather — faux suede today is often as good as the real deal for those looking for vegan or budget friendly.

With food, there is a resurgence of timeless American classics at the moment — doughnuts, ice cream, etc., reinvented with funky flavors and unexpected combinations. Waffles are also trending, and soups of all kinds will be coming back in a big way — this time around with interesting combinations like chicken and lime, heirloom tomato, and other fresh takes on the classics. Interesting water infusions are also very popular — sage, rosemary, and other unique blends. The juice trend is hanging around as well, though with eye-popping prices it seems it might be waning a bit. It’s still a favorite here.

In the home, bold, bright pink is carrying along into fall. It can be in the form of a simple, single wall painted in the color, or all the walls for a more statement look. The same is present with furniture and accessories or decor items — one pop piece, or a bunch combined. Black walls continue to linger, though it’s shifting to navy a bit as the fall season rolls around. Lilac is trending. In terms of furniture, mid century and modern styles are starting to shift to softer, rounder edges and lines, cozier furniture, etc. Old and new mixed together continues to be popular.

There isn’t a new season without new beauty trends! For fall this year, olive green is also in the mix — on the nails, or the eyes. Blue tones of all kinds for the eyes, sheer white for the nails. Pop hair colors are big again, though this may be the peak season for the look. Braids are returning, this time a bit more polished than the loose braid trends of the past, and hair accessories (clips, barrettes, headbands, etc.) are back in a big way. For the lips, bright pink and reds are shifting to orange tones, darker colors, etc.
