Gay Bashing Buzzard Hazel-E Insists She Was Fired For Being Homophobic

Now former Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood star Hazel-E recently got canned. She wants to make it clear that it was because she went on a homophobic rant, and not anything else.

Okay.

Reports TMZ:

Sources connected to Hazel-E tell TMZ … she got a letter delivered by FedEx on Saturday, informing her the show wasn’t picking up an option on her contract. The letter was sent on Friday, October 20 — that’s 16 days AFTER producers say they decided to drop her.

The letter was sent one day after her homophobic comment — saying all gays should burn in hell — earned her swift Internet backlash. We’re told Hazel thinks the timing makes it obvious she was only cut due to the Instagram post.

We contacted ‘L&HH’ producers about Hazel’s letter, and they’re standing by their initial statement — they decided to can Hazel on Oct. 4. Point, blank, period.

And there you have it. The struggle is timely.

At Valentino, Alber Elbaz Talks Being a Nerd

SAVED BY THE BELL: It was back to school for guests attending the Valentino show Sunday, located in the gymnasium of the Lycée Carnot school, designed by Gustave Eiffel. So what kind of students were the show guests?
Clad in a black biker jacket with studded wave motifs at the back, Carla Bruni, who sat next to Valentino Garavani chattering away in Italian, looked like she’d have been a bit of a rebel. But the rest were remarkably well-behaved, so they all claimed.
“I was a very good student. I was a nerd and I remain one,” said Alber Elbaz. When asked if he had any projects in the pipeline, he teased: “You know, silence is a beautiful thing.”
Justice Smith, who has just wrapped filming “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” said he was a straight-A student. “I was so scared of the rules, although I think toward the end, that’s when I started to drop off. But I was a good kid, not to toot my own horn,” he said. Asked about his impressions of the French, this being his first trip to Paris, he replied: “Everyone tries to get you drunk, but I’m cool with that. We’ve been so jet-lagged. We were like,

Freeway Rick Ross Calls Out John Singleton For Being Excluded Out Of Snowfall

Add Freeway Rick Ross to the list of people questioning John Singleton’s directorial vision. The former drug kingpin is calling out the director for leaving him out of Snowfall.

Known for running one of the most notable narcotics organizations in the 1980’s, his infamous moniker saw a resurgence in the new millennium via rappers Freeway and Rick Ross. While his copyright infringement lawsuit against the Maybach Music Group boss was eventually dismissed, Freeway Ricky has lent his expertise to several media projects.

Produced by John Singleton, FX’s newest show Snowfall depicts crack cocaine’s early beginnings in the Los Angeles area. In a recent sit down with HipHopDX, the former kingpin denounced the show citing that he was never consulted even though he talked in depth about his story with the Poetic Justice director.

“John [Singleton] he bought my book. He knows me very well and that he would do a [sic] movie about crack in the 80s and not come consult with me. Me and him had lunch together before he talked about the story. That he would go out and do a [project] of this nature. It was kind of like a slap in the face,”

Ross also questioned the validity of the show’s accuracy and overall narrative.

“He didn’t [mention anything about Snowfall when we met] I read about it in the newspaper. Matter fact when I met with The Weinsteins’ Company, one of the things that they were concerned about was him doing Snowfall because it’s so closely related but lucky for me everyone knows it’s not the real story. It’s far from the real story and I’ve been getting good feedback from a lot of people saying that the story was far-fetched and almost unbelievable it’s so fake.”

It seems Singleton has felt the heat as Ricky asserts that Singleton’s team has indeed reached out saying “his people have reached out and said that they wanted to talk to me but it’s after the fact you know? The first season is already shot.”

In addition to his gripe with Snowfall, Ross also shared how he originally introduced Michael “Harry O” Harris to Suge Knight—the long forgotten investor who initially funded Death Row Records.

“I was there the first day that Harry O and Suge met. Me and Harry O were cellies. I can even tell you how the whole thing [happened] and why. Harry was doing a record on his wife Lydia. [She] wanted to be a singer so he was producing her and he had started me on reading magazines when I got in. So I’m reading one of the magazines and I saw that Dr. Dre and Eazy-E were on bad terms and so Harry is doing a record on his wife Lydia and I was like ‘Why don’t you have Dr. Dre produce one of her tracks?’ That would be the wise thing to do. Him and Eazy is having problems right now. He probably needs money. So Harry said ‘That’s a good idea.’ So immediately he started making phone calls. He wanted to get in touch with Ron Brown, who knew Suge and hooked up. Next thing I know they were forming a record label together.”

Bobby V Denies Hiring Trans “Escort”, Says He’s Being Extorted

Bobby V has a whole lot of explaining to do. It turns out that is the R&B singer running out of a hotel room, but he swears he didn’t know he was hooking up with an allegedly trans prostitute—and that he’s being extorted.

Oh, that’s what happened?

In the video making the rounds, the crooner is seen hiding his face and dipping out of a hotel room, shoeless, while being filmed. The woman behind the camera is allegedly a trans “escort,” pissed that Bobby V didn’t want to pay up.

Instagram Photo

It turns out it was Bobby V, but he’s telling the authorities he got set up, and is being extorted.

Reports TMZ:

Bobby’s rep tells TMZ … the R&B singer vehemently denies the person he hooked up with over the weekend was a prostitute, and says he’s now being extorted after the person filming him realized who he was.

The rep went on to say, “Misrepresentation and deception were maliciously used to target Valentino; during the encounter, Valentino was victimized and threatened by acts of extortion which continued after his departure was captured on video.”

Bobby’s rep also said he’s reported the extortion attempt to law enforcement.

As for the claim made on social media that the woman was transgender — the rep says Bobby had no idea.

This is where we point out that when the video commences, Bobby V doesn’t have any pants on.

As for not knowing this individual was trans… Really dude?

Top 10 Reasons for Being — and Staying — Monogamous

Monogamy gets a bad rap these days — people say it’s unnatural, impossible, outdated, stifling. And, yes, sometimes it is! Especially if your wedding anniversary now contains two digits. But anything worth fighting for will usually put you through the ringer, and monogamy is no exception. So before your partner’s bad habits drive you to the brink of insanity, or you start taking your fantasies about your hot, young mail carrier a little too seriously, let us remind you of 10 good reasons to keep fighting that good fight by staying true to your one and only.

Note: Please also check out our companion article, Top 10 Reasons for Being — and Staying — Non-Monogamous, in which we state: “Both monogamy and non-monogamy have their pros and cons; in both posts, we’ve tried to focus on the pros. Neither is an attempt at telling you how to be, but rather an encouragement of who you are and how you choose to be.”

1. Sex can improve with time. Monogamy isn’t just about marrying off before everything starts to sag. Age can also mean that you get to know your body better, you become more comfortable in your own skin, you leave youthful insecurities behind, and your partner learns your body so well they could navigate you blindfolded. Given enough time, you and your partner can discover untold routes to your happy place. Why would you want to keep starting from scratch and having to break out the instruction manual all over again?

2. Cuddling comes naturally. There’s no awkward pre-sleep shuffle as you try to find the best spooning position that will be comfortable all night. After years together, your bodies just naturally fall into place around each other.

3. Peace of mind about STDs. Assuming both of you are true to your vows of sexual fidelity, then you don’t have to worry about contracting any (or any more) sexually transmitted infections.

4. Freedom from relentless beauty rituals. We’re not saying that once you make a sexual commitment to someone for the long haul, all thoughts of personal hygiene and grooming should go out the window. In fact, the longer you’ve been married, the nicer it is to regularly gussy yourself up. However, the ridiculous beauty standards people — especially women — are expected to live up to these days are automatically lowered when you spend day after day after day with one partner (thank goodness!).

5. Open relationships are for an elite few. It’s the rare, highly evolved person missing the jealousy gene who can successfully navigate the complicated waters of relationships with an open door policy. We’re not saying it can’t — or shouldn’t — be done, we’re just saying that most of us are mere mortals, ones who thrive with the simple security of the pair bond.

6. Cheating is addictive. It’s kind of like breaking the seal: after you’ve gotten away with it once, it’s even harder not to do again. You convince yourself that the affair made you feel more alive than you’ve felt in years, that it didn’t change your feelings for your spouse, and that what they don’t know won’t hurt them. Lies! First of all, the more often you do it, the more likely you are to get caught, especially as you get cocky about your sneaking-around skills. But more importantly, the more you cheat, the less you will respect your partner (for example, you’ll start to look down on them for being so clueless), and the less you’ll respect your own marriage. Eventually, you’ll start to view all human connections with a cynical eye. And what kind of life is that?

7. Monogamy is good for the world. Being a trusty monogamist is good citizenship as well as good karma: If you’re faithful to your partner, then that’s one less person that someone else’s spouse can cheat with. Monogamists pay it forward!

8. Kink is for couples. Dirty sex — the kind that might involve role-playing or spanking or a little light bondage — is best enjoyed with someone you love and trust completely. Letting a first date tie you up? Not such a good idea. Plus, the more domestic and settled your day-to-day life is, the hotter it is to break out the ping-pong paddle at night.

9. Monogamy is meaningful. “Loyalty.” “Trust.” “Fidelity.” “Honor.” “Respect.” These are all just words, until your actions either give them power and importance or deflate them. Monogamy isn’t meaningful because the church or government says so, and it isn’t meaningful because you wore a pouffy white dress/crisp tux and said you wanted it to be meaningful. Rather, monogamy’s meaning expands with each day that you and your partner commit to it. And that’s some pretty powerful stuff.

10. Scrabble. Enough said.

I Was Arrested Just for Being Who I Am

In July, I went to a hotel in Des Moines, Iowa. I was with a friend, who is a Black transgender woman like me. We were in a hard place because we were traveling to the funeral of her brother. We were driving from Kansas City, Missouri, up to Des Moines to meet up with a friend before all going to the funeral together. I booked us a room at the Drury Inn in West Des Moines because I am a regular Drury customer and have a special Gold Key account there, so I get points each time I stay. We also wanted a place to stay that was close to the mall, so my friend could pick up some last minute things she needed for the funeral.

During check-in, my friend and I had a weird feeling. The woman at the front desk was giving us a hard time because my Illinois identification listed my old name and had an “M” identifying me as “male.” I haven’t had the money to obtain a legal name change and update my identification documents with my correct name and gender.

In the middle of checking us in, the clerk went and talked to the manager for several minutes. Then the manager came out from the back and was immediately hostile. She made it obvious that she did not want us staying there. The manager’s face actually showed a look of disgust. Neither the clerk nor the manager would make eye contact with us, and they kept whispering to each other in our presence like we weren’t even there.

My friend said, “I don’t think we should stay here. The manager is giving me a bad vibe. They might be racist or against transgender people.” But we were already there and our luggage was there. I figured that was the worst of it. I was wrong.

The next morning, the police came to us before we could start our day. I was nervous because they were beating at the door and were not wearing police uniforms. The officers were immediately rude and scary. My friend started to cry, and then I started to cry.

At that point we found out that the employees at the Drury Inn called the police because they were so uncomfortable with who we are. They complained that “two men dressed as women” had checked in, and they were worried about prostitution. As a Black trans woman, I am used to unfair and discriminatory treatment, but this was extra upsetting because we were paying customers at a hotel and on our way to a funeral. I felt like I had no rights.

The police officers were very forceful and disrespectful. They tried to make it seem like we were doing something other than we were. They made my friend take out the stuffing in her bra. They were in our room for at least 35 to 40 minutes before they even arrested me.

They went through my purse and found a bottle of my hormones. I carry my hormones with me but not a copy of the prescription. I thought, “How could you arrest me for my hormones?” But they did. They handcuffed me, but never read me any rights or that type of thing. They let my friend go, and she had to go to the funeral without me by her side.

The jail that I was taken to did not have a policy in place for transgender people like me. So when they did the pat down, they had a woman pat down my top half, but a man pat down my bottom half, as if I’m not one person but two. The jail even reached out to the state LGBT organization and the media because they wanted to do the right thing, and my lawyers at the ACLU tell me that the jail is working now to adopt a policy for transgender inmates so that there’s a better system in place in the future. But none of that was in place for me yet, and my experience was extremely lonely, scary and difficult. I was kept in a medical unit, and while I had telephone and video conferencing, I wasn’t able to be with the other women in the general population.

Finally after eight days, people who read about my story were able to raise enough money for my bail. Now, thanks to the help of my criminal defense lawyers who took my case for free, my case has been dismissed.

When I came out as transgender, I expected I would experience some discrimination, but I didn’t know how strong it would be. When something bad happens, I try to think about things and sort out why they happened. When this all happened, I knew exactly what it was: the racial profiling, the transgender profiling, the harassment, the solitary confinement. I knew why it was happening, and I knew it wasn’t right. I knew something had to change. To experience so many levels of discrimination makes you feel like less of a person. I want to stand up for myself and other Black and transgender people. And so I did.

10 Lessons I Learned About Infidelity After Being Cheated On

2015-08-28-1440727931-5262209-sWOMANSTRESSCOUCHsmall.jpg

Finding out you have been cheated on sucks. No matter how marvelous, monotonous, or miserable you thought your marriage was, discovering the person you trusted most has betrayed you is like being sucker punched by Mike Tyson at church on Sunday.

Not only did my husband cheat, he also left me for his mistress and married her a little more than three years later which was just a few short months ago. They are now expecting their first child.

Sure, this would be a lot for any jilted spouse to absorb. In my case, I met my husband when I was 15, married at 22, and was separated by the time I was 39. Marriage was all I knew and suddenly becoming single in middle age was a lot to wrap my brain around. Sometimes, I admit, I still catch myself wondering how in the world this happened to me – to us – and why.

But there are reasons. And lasting effects.

Three years has provided me with ample opportunity to reflect on how infidelity has impacted my life and what I have learned from the experience, even though I am humble enough to know I am still learning. Here are my takeaways as of today.

1. Infidelity has little to do with appearance, money, education, or social status. Yours or the person with whom your spouse cheats. While I was married I was one of many onlookers who would make snap judgments about why someone else’s spouse was unfaithful. I never failed to weigh in when the husband of a friend left his wife for someone who was less attractive, less successful, less educated, and less respected in the community than she. Or vice versa. What I learned is none of these things matter. What matters is how we each feel in our partner’s company. Anything else takes a distant second place.

2. Infidelity is not your fault. Cheating is an act. When your spouse cheats it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with him or her. Cheating is a unilateral decision, a choice your spouse made without you. Your spouse could just as easily have made the choice to leave your marriage without betraying you first. His or her behavior is not a reflection of you, only of himself or herself.

3. But your marital problems are. To varying degrees. Sorry, but it’s true. I am always skeptical whenever I hear someone attribute the breakdown of a marriage entirely to his or her spouse, especially in those cases where one spouse was unfaithful. “I was the perfect wife.” “I was the greatest husband.” No, you weren’t. Nobody is all of those things all of the time even when a marriage is strong.

4. Infidelity changes you. The key is to make sure those changes become positive forces in your life, ones that make you wiser and stronger in your future relationships. Maybe you are more distrustful now. It’s understandable. But if that distrust begets more open communication with a new partner by inspiring you to ask questions rather than accept “bad behavior” at face value, you are giving yourself the respect you deserve. It’s up to you to show the world how you want and expect to be treated. If someone is not giving you respect, walk.

5. But not entirely. Meaning no one can take from you what you aren’t willing to give away. When someone doesn’t value you it doesn’t mean you don’t have value. My mother has a cousin whose first husband treated her badly. After being married to her second husband for some time, she was surprised to discover that everything her first husband said she did wrong her second husband said she did right! Remember who you are and rejoice in it. Guaranteed if you do someone else will, too.

6. If your spouse wants to leave, let him or her go. When my husband told me he was leaving I dropped to my knees and begged him to stay, to which he responded that HE would give ME one more week to become a “better wife” (translation: give up my autonomy and self-respect, what little I had left). He also agreed to have no contact with his mistress during that time, a promise I later learned he didn’t keep (thank you, Verizon). My husband never wanted or intended to stay which meant he had nothing to lose by negotiating with me. My weakened bargaining position, however, meant I did. The point is if both partners aren’t dedicated to repairing the marriage, the marriage cannot be repaired. Your spouse wants to leave? A friendly reminder to not to let the door hit him or her on the ass is actually more than he or she deserves.

7. It’s okay to forgive your spouse. Even if your spouse doesn’t believe or acknowledge he or she did anything wrong and doesn’t need or want your forgiveness. I forgave my ex-husband because it enabled me to move on. True forgiveness is a gift we give ourselves when we are ready and willing to give it, if ever.

8. It’s okay not to. For that repentant spouse who shows up out of the clear blue begging for your forgiveness so he or she can move on, remember you don’t owe anybody anything. Only yourself. Take as much time, even if it’s a lifetime, to heal. You are worth it. Anyone who truly values your forgiveness will wait for it.

9. Not everyone cheats. Nowadays cheating is rampant and it’s easy to become jaded as you hear more and more stories of infidelity. But it’s important to remember that not everyone cheats. Nothing is more unattractive than bashing an entire sex based on the behavior of some or even one. To combat such temptation choose a couple you know, the couple who enjoys or enjoyed the relationship you aspire to have and deserve to have one day, and make them your role model. For me, that couple remains my late grandparents. Whenever I get down in the dumps and think a healthy relationship isn’t possible, I remind myself how my very own grandmother and grandfather remained devoted to each other for nearly 60 years!

10. It’s better to be alone than to be cheated on. I was recently speaking with my ex-husband’s sister at a birthday dinner my ex-husband hosted for our daughter. His sister and I hadn’t spoken in years and while chatting with her about how challenging dating in today’s “hookup” culture can be, she quipped that in hindsight her brother must not look so bad to me now. I couldn’t disagree more and told her so (with him in earshot). Though I have endured my share of lonely nights and bad date nights in between, being with a man, whether my ex or someone new, who thinks so little of me that he could be unfaithful is simply not acceptable. After being cheated on, it’s not that I now expect more from any man who comes into my life. It’s that I no longer accept less.

‘How Did Our Son Go From College-Bound Star Athlete To Being Homeless?’

A few years ago, Ian, now 22, was an honors student with a scholarship to play college basketball. Now he’s homeless, unemployed and admits he uses drugs.

His parents, Rachael and Tino, turn to Dr. Phil for help understanding how that happened – and what they can do to shift the course of their son’s future.

In the video above, Ian recalls, “I was a good student … I loved the game of basketball and always had dreams of being professional, but it didn’t work out.” After going to college, he says, “I fell in love with smoking [pot]. I was smoking every day. My third year of college, I lost motivation. I dropped out and never went back.”

His parents let him move back home, but they say when Ian wouldn’t get a job or go back to school – and smoked pot under their roof – they kicked him out. At that point, Ian began sleeping on the streets or sneaking into their tool shed at night for shelter.

“To see him throw his life away is really, really hard. It’s very devastating,” says his mom. “I just want to know what happened to that fun-loving kid that I sent off to college.”

But Rachael and Tino are not only concerned about how Ian’s life has so drastically changed. They say they question if he’s delusional, has mental illness, or if there’s a deeper problem at play. Watch Tuesday’s episode of Dr. Phil as this family attempts to shift the course of Ian’s life with Dr. Phil’s help — check local listings here.

Scarface Arrested After Being Honored At BET Hip-Hop Awards

Scarface has apparently been arrested after being honored at the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta last night.

Face was bestowed with the coveted “I Am Hip-Hop” award, a nod to his influence and tenure in Hip-Hop.

Scarface’s moment, as he was introduced by Ludacris, was a highlight of the evening. Authorities were present at the taping, which happened at the Atlanta Civic Center. They took the Houston rap legend in on failure to pay child support, according to sources.

Celebrity photographer Freddy-O explained what happened backstage.

“After Scarface exited the stage heading back to the celebrity trailers there were 10 sheriffs waiting to arrest him. Sources revealed that Scarface had a warrant and he was not suppose to leave the State of Texas. Scarface was so concerned about accepting his award and not disappointing his fans he risked being arrested,” Freddy wrote. “Snoop was back stage when Scarface was arrested and was upset that; the great moment ended on a sour note.  The incident resulted in the show being delayed.”

DSC_7062 DSC_7082

Brad Jordan, Scarface’s real name, has had to deal with these sort of charges in the past. In 2010, he served time in jai for failing to pay in Montgomery County, TX.

AllHipHop’s Chuck Creekmur was present at the awards and spoke to Scarface just as he was to be honored.

“I spoke to Face before he was going hit the stage and he was in great spirits,” Creekmur said. “There was no indication that something was awry. After the show Julia Beverly (author and journalist) and I were trying to find him to again congratulate him, but we never heard back. Hopefully, this gets resolved quickly.

Below is an extensive 2-part interview with Scarface with Creekmur and Nida Khan.

Stop Being Fragile Parents

2015-09-29-1443565473-9512539-adamelainehalloweenscan.png

I’ve been embarrassing my children for more than 30 years. They now are happy young adults with loving spouses, adorable children and rewarding careers. Obviously, my strategy worked.

Throughout their childhood, I didn’t worry about harming their delicate self-esteem. Nor did I hover over their every action, schedule daily enrichment activities, make them eat kale, or ensure their socks matched. Instead, I created chaos and commotion just to motivate them to find peace and create order in their lives. I’m altruistic like that.

Children today are so pampered that some timid parents will become marooned in a horrifying, never-ending reality show if they don’t stop appeasing and indulging their tiny terrors. News flash: Your Kid Isn’t a Child Pharaoh. To toughen kids for real life, bewildered parents should halt most organized activities and throw in these handy tips to challenge their children’s self-confidence and encourage self-reliance.

1. Criticize their artwork. If your first-grader comes home with a hand-drawn picture, be sure to say that the tree looks like a spider and the sun should be more round. Then throw it away. Maybe she’ll try harder.

2. Show favoritism. Is the older child has an attractive project, be sure to tape it to the refrigerator for months and often mention the talent to the younger one. Give the older child extra dessert.

3. Exhibit lazy behavior. Stay in bed on Saturday morning and tell them to make their own damn pancakes. This is how children learn responsibility and cooking skills.

4. Take your own time-out. If the children are throwing a fit in the car, pull over to the side, turn off the engine, lean back, and close your eyes. Say, “Mommy is going away for a while.” Then chant in a foreign language for 10 minutes. They’ll be too traumatized to make noise.

5. Condemn their friends. Be sure to mock their friend’s silly habits. And when your teenager has a basement full of rowdy kids, walk in wearing a clown nose, belch loudly, and walk out. This instills a fear in your child that never goes away.

6. Cry when you meet your child’s first date. Sob into a towel, run into your room, and slam the door. This action will test their patience, strengthen their loyalty to each other, and promote tolerance.

7. Threaten them, if necessary. If your high school senior won’t write thank you notes for graduation presents, threaten to publish an announcement on social media that your child is too lazy and ungrateful to appreciate gifts now or in the future.

8. Bribery works. That hellhole of a bedroom won’t get clean on its own. Hide a $ 10 bill somewhere in the room and tell them to tidy and organize everything to find it. Substitute a $ 20 bill for particularly egregious cases that harbor toxic diseases. If they demand more money, tell them to move out and find an apartment.

Finally, remember that children can sense an easy target. If mommy and daddy are too weak and delicate to assume their strong but loving roles as parents, the kids will rule the house before the youngest is out of diapers and could stay in diapers for ten years. Parents can reverse this pending disaster by starting now to embarrass their children on a regular basis so the kids find the courage to grow up, move out, and prove themselves.

Go buy a clown nose. Thank me later.

EXCLUSIVE: Crooked I Criticizes Black Rappers For Being Afraid To Talk About Social Issues (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) With police brutality being a national news story for over a year and the 2016 presidential campaign dominating coverage, some Hip Hop artists have used their status to address social/political issues. “I just hate the way that Black rappers are scared to talk about what’s going on in America,” said Crooked. “They’re so tune into syrup, pills, weed, cars, women. If you take those subject matters away from them, they don’t rap about sh*t.”

The Slaughterhouse member also mentioned he is thinking about no longer using the word “n*gga.” In Crooked’s view, non-Black people are over abusing the n-word.

“When I say I don’t think you should say that, they say ‘well, you say it’.’ You Know what? I have to give some kind of credit to that comment,” explained Crooked.

Do Trans People Of Color Have A Harder Time Being Accepted?

Model, actress, and designer Isis King may have been born biologically male, but ever since childhood she knew she was woman. Establishing a transgender identity does not come easy though, and at 23, Isis was homeless, living at a New York City LGBT shelter. After finding work as a background model for an America’s Next Top Model photo shoot, host Tyra Banks took an interest in her, and asked Isis be a part of the show’s next season. Within months, Isis was in the national spotlight as the first transgender contestant on Top Model, and she has used her platform to follow her dreams ever since – attending college for fashion design, expanding her modeling and acting career, and serving as an activist for transgender people everywhere.

Struggling for acceptance

With all the recent attention on Caitlyn Jenner, the transgender community has been in the spotlight like never before. But there is still a long way to go when it comes to acceptance and visibility for those with a little less star power. “There have been 17 murders of trans people of color in 2015 alone,” says Isis, “and there are just not a lot of opportunities for trans women of color in general.” Trans women of color have “usually no privilege” says Isis, and often have had troubled upbringings. “When you’re ostracized, when you’re kicked out of the house when you’re young, it can be difficult to find opportunity,” says Isis. Some women resort to sex work, a “dangerous profession” that unfortunately is the only job many ostracized transgender women can get. Progress is still a process; Isis implores that we are “trying to create more opportunities to make the world easier and safer for transgender women”.

How To Stop Being Lonely (Without Needing Anyone Else)

The number one need of all people is acceptance, according to Dr. Phil. “We often interpret that as meaning acceptance from others, but the most important relationship that you will ever have is the one you have with yourself,” he explains in the video above. “If you’re not your own best friend, if you’re not there for you minute to minute, hour to hour and day to day, you can be very lonely, no matter what anybody else does.”

He continues: “Each of us has an authentic self – who we truly, uniquely are. If we’re at peace about that, then we’re not vulnerable to what others say. You need to live to your own standards. You need to be true to your own values. People come and go, but you stay in your own life. You need to be your own best friend.”

Empire Being Sued For $500 Million

Terrence Howard has a host of real-life problems but his place of business has attracted yet another lawsuit.

The premise isn’t as elaborate or sensational as one of the hit show Empire’s subplots. It’s just another guy claiming Empire stole his life story/idea.

Reports TMZ:

Imagine “Empire” with Shaft in the lead role … that was the vision one guy had, but it never got made … and now he believes the creators of the show owe him $ 500 million for stealing his idea.

A guy named Jon Astor-White is suing EPs Danny Strong and Lee Daniels — as well as Imagine Entertainment and 21st Century Fox — claiming he shopped around a show called “King Solomon” back in 2007 … which bears a lot of similarities to “Empire.”

Astor-White claims his show would have starred Richard Roundtree (Shaft said no thanks) and was about a record executive and his family and their battle over control of the company.

Astor-White said he faxed the treatment around, and included a proposed cast list which was aspirational, to say the least. In addition to Roundtree, Astor-White wanted Diahann Carroll, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, John Goodman, George Hamilton and Angie Dickinson.

Astor-White describes his show as “the style and elegance of ‘Dynasty’ meets ‘The Sopranos’ with a sprinkling of ‘The Godfather.’” That’s a similar comparison Marvin Gaye III made in his claim.

The show has also been sued by a guy with Jackson family connections and by a woman who claims she is the real Cookie.

Astor-White is seeking the half a billion dollars … plus additional damages.

The struggle will likely continue down the line. Empire’s second season starts on September 23.

Bryan Fischer is now adopting Lady Gaga’s pro-equality mantra and twisting its message for his own, anti-gay argument.

On his “Focal Point” radio show this week, the conservative host and former Director of Issues Analysis at the American Family Association said that the only justification in identifying as a Christian in today’s society was that he was “born this way,” Right Wing Watch first reported

Pointing to the case of Kentucky clerk Kim Davis, who is facing a lawsuit for refusing to issue marriage licenses to both straight and same-sex couples following the Supreme Court’s June 26 ruling on marriage equality, he added, “Who would choose a lifestyle where you are the unending subject of ridicule, mockery, and contempt by liberals in society, by elites, by professors, on the media, by politicians? Who’s going to choose that?”

“So our defense is, hey, I was born that way,” he said, citing what he described as an “inner revulsion” to homosexuality.

Fischer, of course, is no stranger to anti-LGBT remarks. He’s rallied against the pro-equality arguments seen in “Modern Family,” Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s marriage equality anthem “Same Love,” and even a recent Burger King campaign.

Still, his latest is one for the books. Way to go, Mr. Fischer. If you’re trying to justify a homophobic mindset, you might be better off NOT citing one of the world’s foremost gay icons.

On Being True to Ourselves: Lessons From My Daughter

My amazing, incredible and world traveling daughter finally came home last week after a month in Amsterdam. She called her time in the CISV village “the most amazing experience of my life.” She arrived exhausted, animated and changed. She talked non-stop, except to sleep, about the amazing friends, adventures and life lessons she’d had. Despite my being the adult, she is my hero. Her thirst for learning, her openness, her kind and gentle nature, her willingness to be vulnerable — all a gift. Her response to the opportunity to meet kids from all over the world and live together in a community of their own for a month was so enthusiastic, it was contagious. I was envious of her journey.

In the yearbook she returned with, so many of her friends, leaders and staff commented about her comfort in her own skin, her big ideas, her open mind and giant heart. Reading those notes was so emotional for me. I was so proud and also in such awe. I take very little credit for the person she is, which is very much her own doing. I know we are pretty good parents and get close to 50 percent of it right, close to 50 percent of the time. But she, she is all her own.

I was reminded however, that it was the same spirit in me that forced me to see how much of myself I had lost in my marriage. How squelched we can become when trying to please someone else’s ideal of how we “should be.” I was reminded that I had no one to blame for that but me. In any relationship there is give and take. There is compromise. All of that is necessary and good, but when we compromise ourselves, our very core and our very being, that is when it is no longer healthy. THAT is when we have to pay attention to the inner voice that looks in the mirror and barely recognizes our reflection.

Marriage, like any relationship, is hard. Being true to ourselves is even harder. My daughter is my hero because even as she enters the cruel world of tweendom, she stays the course. I’m smart enough to know this might not always be the case. Middle School and High School are other-worldly planets where the rules seem to change daily. Puberty and hormones often take over and cut down self-confidence and ability to be ones true self. Acceptance often rules over self-worth. I remember. I recall exactly when I went from believing (at 10) I owned the world to realizing (at 13) it owned me. I also know that I will fight damn hard to help her stay true to her amazing spirit. I know that I will prioritize that over grades, clothes, looks and even friends. All the while, thanking her for motivating me and inspiring me to remember my own.

Comedians Paul Scheer And Rob Huebel Call Out The Fat Jew: ‘He’s Being A F*cking Dick’

Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel blame both The Fat Jew and social media for the Instagram’s sensation’s history of posting other people’s jokes and memes.

“He’s being a f*cking dick, and he’s probably a piece of crap, but it’s also on those platforms,” Huebel said of The Fat Jew HuffPost Live on Tuesday. “Like Twitter and Instagram — they make it too easy to do that.”

Scheer, who stars alongside Huebel in Vimeo’s new comedy series “Crash Test,” added that Twitter feels like “the only place right now where you can get away” with joke theft. But that’s not the only issue, according to the comedian.

“I think the issue that’s really bad about it is that [The Fat Jew] is profiting off of it,” explained Scheer. “He’s not just a thief — he’s actually making money off of people’s stuff. If he attributes it — if he’s like an aggregator — that’s fine.”

Hollywood’s One Trick to Being Photogenic

Stars: They’re just like us. They aren’t born camera-ready. In fact, according to models and actors, there’s a specific technique to looking perfect–and confident–in every pic.

You gotta squinch.

Related: 31 Life-Changing Beauty Hacks

2015-08-14-1439570545-3781944-emmastone2.jpg

What the hell is squinching, you ask? It’s a combination of squinting and pinching.

Here’s what you do: Tighten your eyes as if you were going to squint. But slightly relax your top lids and let the lower ones do more of the work (where the “pinching,” of sorts, comes into play).

The goal is to find a happy medium between full-on squinting and, conversely, looking like a deer in headlights. (If you still need visual evidence, don’t worry–there’s a YouTube tutorial.)

We spent a bit of time practicing and found that the trick does work. But it helps if you simultaneously say to yourself “Operation: Emma Stone.”

Meek Mill accused her of going harder than the people from OVO. He says she’s one of the people in the position to be a part of an artist’s success or failure, while she chooses to be messy. Meek called her unprofessional and said,

“I didn’t know program directors suppose to b involved in the middle of some rap sh*t ….U controlling radio basically being biased! How did we even get here this the funny sh*t that be going on behind closed doors!”

When Being Childfree Isn’t A Choice

The choice to be childfree can be truly gratifying, but what happens when being childfree isn’t a choice? BuzzFeed spoke to three women to find out.

In the new video, three women discuss what their lives are like knowing they may never have biological children. Two of the women explained that they most likely will never have children due to medical issues, while the third said she never got an explanation as to why she can’t reproduce.

All three of the women discuss the ups and downs they’ve experienced after discovering they can’t have children. “There were a few times I thought I was pregnant and then I wasn’t,” one woman said. “It started to feel like I was cursed.”

Another woman comments on how frustrating it is to not have control over her own body. “It was never my choice whether or not I would be able to have children,” she said.

“Whether or not you want to have children, receiving that piece of news is really hard and can change your life,” one woman said. Another added: “I felt really lost, and I felt like I couldn’t offer what I needed to offer in order to be like someone that someone wanted to be with for the long term.”

The women said that although it was initially very hard knowing they most likely will not have kids, that rough pill has become easier to swallow over time. You don’t have to give birth to someone to be their mother,” one woman said. “Think about all the motherly characters in your life and the influences. Not all of them gave birth to you.”

Towards the end of the video one of the women pointed out there are many more things to do in your life than simply reproduce: “There’s more ways to leave a legacy than a biological child walking around this earth.”

Woman Whose Husband Had An Affair Wonders If Her Weight, Wearing Yoga Pants And Being ‘Bitchy’ Might Have Contributed To His Behavior

Kari was married to her high school sweetheart, Lonnie, for 15 years, when police arrested him and accused him of being a serial rapist. Watch as the mother of four describes the shock as her life was turned upside down.

Lonnie has since pleaded guilty to one count of forceful rape and three felony counts of kidnapping, and is serving a 26-year prison sentence.

Dr. Phil reads what Kari has previously said: “If I was thinner, more beautiful, more loving, Lonnie wouldn’t have raped other women.”

Kari also laments her role in Lonnie having had an affair. “Now, looking back, I would probably change things,” says Kari, who is a stay-at-home mom. “I didn’t wear makeup, I didn’t do my hair, I kind of just stayed in yoga pants all day. So maybe if I did pay a little more attention to myself that way … ” she hypothesizes about her role, admitting that she has struggled with her weight, as opposed to the mistress, who was thin. “You know, after I had my little guy, who’s now 3, he would sleep in the middle of us at night. So I mean I kind of separated us. I don’t know if that was it,” she adds.

Dr. Phil asks, “How does that link up in a cause and effect way to somebody deciding that he’s going to go kidnap and rape young girls?”

Watch the video above as Kari says she regrets being “bitchy” to her husband, that she feels she emasculated him, and why she says she blames herself in hindsight.

How can she and her four kids move forward? Watch more from this episode of Dr. Phil, airing Friday, here.

‘OITNB’ Star Dascha Polanco On Not Being Size Zero In Hollywood

“Orange Is The New Black” star Dashca Polanco isn’t shy about sharing the body-related insecurities she had growing up. Now, the star delves into her personal struggles and how she hopes to inspire others.

This weekend Polanco, 33, will join “The Real” host Adrienne Bailon, plus-sized model Denise Bidot, Roc Nation executive Lenny Santiago and personal trainer Massiel “MankoFit” Arias to discuss beauty and body image within the Latino community. The panel is part of Latina magazine’s first Latina Beauty, Hair & Wellness Expo, which will be held at New Jersey’s Meadowlands Expo Center Saturday and Sunday.

Ahead of the panel, the actress spoke to The Huffington Post about her own experiences with body image in Hollywood, as well as the specific struggles Latinas in the United States often face.

Why did you decide it was important to be a part of this panel addressing body image?

It’s been something that I have struggled with throughout my life and I think that as I’m becoming older and I became a woman and I’ve gone through the phases, I’m learning how to love myself more. I think it’s very important [to talk about it] when you’re in a position of where you are looked upon or onto as a role model or inspiration. Young girls and women, we all need that sense of security and that empowerment, so it’s very important for me to display that.

How were you able to overcome the body image issues you struggled with growing up?

Well, I don’t think I overcame them. I think that I’m learning how to not make the insecurities a reason for me to not achieve my goals or go for my dreams, aspire to bigger things. I think that I still have those qualities but I am embracing them more and I’m learning to make those differences unique qualities as opposed to negative obstacles or thoughts.

Weight has been an issue in my life. My siblings were way thinner and I was always bigger. Growing up the girls around me were thinner and I felt like I always had issues with image and stuff like that.

You’re going to be on a panel with a lot of Latinas talking about body image and trying to inspire women to love themselves. But who were your body image role models when you were younger?

Growing up I looked up to [Puerto Rican artist] Iris Chacón, who was a performer and a singer who had curves and thighs and was curvaceous. My body goals are like when I see Serena Williams, that beauty. It’s different, it’s muscular, it’s not a size zero but she looks amazing. I think I pick and choose from every single person out there.

And how could I forget, it just hit me who I admired: Selena Quintanilla. I think Selena was the only person that I actually was able to connect and relate to growing up.

I think there are many Selena fans out there who could say the same, which begs the question: What kind of body issues specifically affect Latinas in the United States?

I think volume, the curves, definitely. Also culturally we’re looked at as sexual and sensual and our curves can be a little bit exaggerated. I think that growing up in the United States where everybody is the generic size zero, I think that’s something that we all struggle with.

Specifically when you work in entertainment it’s an issue, the moment you’re not a sample size, whatever that means. I keep on telling people that sample size for me is when you give me a sample and you let me try like a piece of cake. You know what I mean? That’s a sample. You can’t say a sample size and not have a sample of each size. I think that when I go into the store and they say ‘Oh I have a sample’ and I go ‘Oh OK so that means you have a sample 10, so I’m going to be able to fit into a sample 10.’ Don’t tell me you have a sample and the sample is a zero because that’s not what the norm for me is.

There was a Vogue article last year that said “We’re officially in the Era of the Big Booty.” Regardless of the validity of that article, it does further the notion that curvy women are more accepted in the United States now. What do you think about that?

I think that everything comes in waves. I think there was a wave where everybody was getting silicone breast implants and it was all about the breast. If you were flat-chested it wasn’t cool. Then it came down to like being anorexic, so you had to not wear anything and not have an ass and not have titties and just have to starve yourself because you had to fit into something. And now we have a new wave where everything is you have to get some butt [injection] shots, and whether it kills me I’m going to have a big ass.

For me it was like wow, that whole time when I was hiding my butt and my uniform didn’t fit me right and I was being made fun of because my butt was huge and now people want to have my butt. So I feel like everything comes in waves and at the end of the day what it has taught me is that it really doesn’t matter. The most important thing is how you embrace those differences and how you love yourself to the point where you’re comfortable in your own skin and enhance the qualities that make you. Because there’s so many people that have these beautiful bodies and then you meet them and it’s ugh. You know?

Do you feel like your body-related insecurities growing up ever stopped you from doing anything?

My whole life I’ve tried not stopping myself from pursuing acting because I felt like “I’m too fat, who is going to want me for that?” Or not going for the cute guy in school because I’m not like a cheerleader girl, I’m more like the football girl and eating hamburgers. Then later finding out that I could’ve been with the football player because he had a crush on me and he was too shy and I was so insecure and I’m like dammit! I missed out on so many opportunities.

Now is the time for women to support one another, to show love for one another whether you get stuff done or you don’t, the most important thing is to support one another and first and foremost love yourself.

The Memo I Must Have Missed About Being A Divorcée In Your 30s

This Is Divorce At…” is a HuffPost Divorce series delving into divorce at every stage of life. Want to share your experience of divorcing at a certain age? Email us at divorce@huffingtonpost.com.

Kelly Aylesworth is the vice president of a commercial landscaping business and lives with her five-year old son, two dogs and three cats in Houston, Texas.

You may have noticed that no boyfriend or husband was mentioned in that description of her happy home life — her friends certainly have — but Aylesworth doesn’t pay it any mind.

“I spend a lot of time reassuring people that I haven’t lost my marbles in choosing to stay single,” the divorced mom told The Huffington Post recently. “My marriage lasted 10 years. I’m just taking some much needed time for myself now.”

Below, Alyesworth shares more of her story.

“Somewhere between my divorce and now, I must have missed the memo that said you need to start seeing people and make up for lost time in the dating world. Why are people so concerned with when I’ll jump back into the dating scene?

I had lunch with a friend recently and our conversation illustrates my experience perfectly: I spent most of the time reassuring her that I’m OK and have no desire to “just get out there.” I left the lunch thinking “what is wrong with me?” Two days later, I came to the realization that I’m a lot healthier on my own.

Let me explain: I read online recently that recovering from a divorce is similar to recovering from open heart surgery. Similar to surgery, my heart has been torn open. I’m grieving my ex — someone I still see when I drop our son off for visitation. I’ve been fully exposed and I’m in the process of finding out who I am.  I’m learning new things about myself everyday. (Who knew I like tomatoes and onions in my scrambled eggs!)

If I were in my twenties — who knows — things might be different. But I am a 38-year-old divorced parent who is working on balancing parenting and a career and learning to live life on my own again. I’m good.

No, I’m not jumping at the chance to date or walk down the aisle again. No, I will not give my number to the random man sitting next to me at Starbucks who keeps staring (you’re kind of freaking me out, buddy).

Saying “no” to marriage and relationships doesn’t mean that I’m cynical. I still believe in the sacredness of marriage and all that comes with it. But I realize now I need to love myself first. If you’re reading this and feel similarly, don’t let other people persuade you to date when you’re not ready. Know that spending time by yourself is healthy. It’s a stage in learning to love yourself again.

Two days after lunch with my friend, I felt better equipped to respond to the sad, compassionate looks I get from well-meaning people when I say that I am not dating yet. I can say with confidence that I’m on a journey of self-discovery. And some day when I least expect it, I’ll find someone I can love with all of my mended heart.”

Chris Tucker & Netflix Being Sued by Comedian for Over $65,000

(AllHipHop News) Tuesday morning (July 7), it has been confirmed that both Chris Tucker and Netflix are being sued by comedian, Terry Hodges, for $ 66,000, this according to TMZ. Tucker’s anticipated comedy special will be broadcast via Netflix on Friday (July 10).

Marty Singer, Chris Tucker’s attorney has released the following statement, “”This lawsuit is absurd and completely without merit. We fully expect this case to be thrown out by the court.”

In his recently filed lawsuit, Hodges claims that he has has been contributing his time and material to the project since 2008, but has not received any consistent financial compensation since 2011. He then goes on to insist that his writing, producing, editing, acting fees and travel expenses have been utterly ignored, as was Tucker’s purported promise to make him a co-producer. That title would have helped Hodges secure more money on the back-end.

Is there any credibility to this lawsuit?

Below, HuffPost Divorce readers on Facebook share the one thing they love most about being sans-spouse this Independence Day.

1. “I’m no longer walking on eggshells all the time!

2. “I’m discovering who I am as an individual and creating and achieving my own goals, entirely on my own. Learning that happiness and love comes from within is pretty amazing.”

3. “The best thing? Always picking the movie and not having to share the popcorn.”

4. “I love staying in and hanging out with my kids. The stress is gone, even for my cat. I never realized just how much my ex stressed out my cat until the ex left and the cat stopped having accidents all over the house!”

5. “I have freedom to do what I want, wake up when I’m ready and go to sleep when I’m ready. It’s freedom to be myself.”

6. “I know if something needs to be done, I’ll get it done. It’s better than asking my ex to do something and then never having him do it.”

7. “I’m now able to give 100 percent of my heart and time to my daughter.”

8. “I no longer have to clean up after my ex! It was like having a fourth child.”

9.Deciding what to do every day and night is now in my hands. The kids have a say, too. It is truly our life to breathe, to experience, to explore.”

10. “There’s no one to steal the covers, hog the bed or keep me awake with snoring or the TV. I sleep so well now.”

11. “I like just doing things because I want to do them. When my girls are with their dad, I just go. One day I decided I’d get a tattoo I’d been wanting. I just went out and did it!”

12. “It’s great to give zero f*cks about what a significant other is doing.”

13. “I get to experience new things I probably wouldn’t have done while I was married, like playing on a kickball league, participating in mud runs and learning how to golf.”

14. “I can spend my money on what I want!”

15. “I’m learning to take care of myself. And I no longer just define myself as a wife and mother. I’m accomplishing things I never would have imagined back when I was complacent in my marriage.”

16. “Post-divorce sex!”

17. “I love doing whatever I want, whenever I want and not having to explain myself to anybody.”

18. “I can turn on the AC or the heater whenever I want. When I lived with my ex, I had to freeze in the winter and swelter in the summer. I’m out of temperature prison now!”

19. “There are no more never-ending arguments.”

20. “I’m getting to know myself! I had been with my ex since I was 21 years old. He was all I knew.”

The 9 Best Things About Being A Single Mom

I was single — well, divorced — when I chose to become a mom via a sperm donor. Women become single mothers in different ways, some through choice and some through chance, but either way, single motherhood is the hardest thing you will ever do, and by far (far, far) the most important. Here’s why we single moms rock.

News in Brief: Man Just Needs To Power Through Another Day Of Not Being Broke And Unemployed

CHICAGO—After listing off a litany of reasons why he cannot stand his current job, local 27-year-old Don Rutland told reporters Friday that he just needs to power through another day of not being broke and unemployed. “It’s so unbearable right now, but I’m just going to buckle down and make it to the end of the day,” said the man who is not in the midst of an agonizing nine-month job search and can pay all of his bills on time with the money from the paycheck he receives every other week. “If I can just drag my ass into that office and grind it out until 5 p.m., I’ll be good.” At press time, Rutland was reportedly heading out for drinks to unwind from another day not spent battling a chronic, debilitating illness.

Why I’m Not Too Broken Up About Being From a “Broken” Home

I’m not a big fan of the term “broken home.” It reeks of melodrama. “The poor child! She comes from a broken home! How ghastly!” I’ve also never really understood the phrase, “Staying together for the kids.” When I hear about couples doggedly and unhappily sticking it out for this reason, or a parent being torn apart about what a divorce will “do to the children,” I generally just want to shake everyone involved and shout, “What do you think living in a home with a tense, unhappy, loveless marriage is going to do to them??” Kids are pretty astute. They know when something’s up. They know when mom and dad are secretly seething at each other over the dinner table, and (spoiler alert) they can definitely hear you when you fight behind closed doors.

I guess I’m just saying don’t martyr yourself in an unhappy marriage for the sake of your children. If you decide to end it, and do so while ensuring your kids know you both love them and will always be there for them, odds are your kids are going to be a-okay. Yeah, they might shed a few tears initially and they’ll definitely be an adjustment period, but they’ll hardly be ruined for life (unless you totally screw it up by being petty and immature and putting them in the middle, in which case you’re probably totally screwing them up anyway).

Would it have been nice if my parents had gotten along and stayed together and we had all been one big, happy family? Of course. But that would also by definition mean that my parents would have been two entirely different people than who they actually were. And as an adult who can look back and remember their dysfunctional, miserable dynamic, I would never wish it on either of them for my sake.

Maybe that’s a key to growing up: the realization that your parents are people outside of just being your parents. They have whole entire emotional inner lives that we are pretty selfishly unaware of as kids (and that’s the way it should be). If my parents had waited to split when us kids had all left the nest, I’d like to think I’d tow the line of, “You let yourself be miserable for 20 years for us? Jeeze guys, we would have understood!”

Bottom line, your kids love you, and if they grow up to be empathetic people capable of complex thought, they’ll understand. And to be totally honest, there were plenty of times when my parents did put us in the middle and did make us little mediators and did do a lot of the things that all those fancy divorce books now say not to do, but guess what? As an adult, I still understand! They were hurting. They had never ended a marriage before. They were just trying their best. And I still love them (and you can be sure I still call home to tell them when their favorite movies are on TV or when I’m wondering if Raid is poisonous to cats).

So divorce if that’s what you need to do. The kids will be fine as long as you continue to be loving parents who they know they can always depend on. And if you’re not that, then yeah, expect them to have issues — whether you stay married or not.

50 Cent on Working Out, Being Well, and Eating Cheese

By 50 Cent as Told to Ashley Weatherford

A decade after his debut album, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, 50 Cent is a very different man. He’s eschewed his trademark bulletproof vest for tailored suits (or no shirt at all, if you consider his most recent campaign for underwear brand Frigo), acts now more than he raps (he’ll join Jake Gyllenhaal in Southpaw this summer and has a leading role in Starz’s crime drama Power), and launched health brand SK Energy shots. The Cut spoke with 50 Cent about his surprising admiration of Floyd Mayweather, how he staves off boredom at the gym, and why he always surrounds himself with cheese.

How I start my day: It fluctuates, but this morning I got up at 7 a.m. to be at the gym by 7:30 a.m. I usually wake up at 9 a.m. to be at the gym by 10 a.m. I’ll have liquid protein before the gym. I’m not really a breakfast person. Like this morning, I was like: I’m not hungry yet. I was still wiping my eyes at the gym. When I do have breakfast, it’s at 11 a.m. I’ll train and go to the office by 11:15 a.m. If it’s a press day, a stylist meets me there to figure out what I have to wear, and after I get dressed, I make my way over to start publicity and professional stuff.

How I like to sweat: I have a trainer because it’s easier for me to take my mind off of how much I’m doing. If you concentrate too hard and you’re writing down how many sets you did, then you’ll only do a few and feel like you did enough. Without the trainer, I’d be walking around, looking at people, and listening to music. I could sit there for two hours and do half the work. When I go to the gym casually without him, it doesn’t feel like a workout. I’m not really into lifting heavy weights, but using smaller weights as cardio. It keeps your heart rate higher and I keep track of my heart rate on my tablet to make sure it stays high. I only take 30 seconds of recovery.

To me, wellness is: Just being conscious of your physical [body]. When I work out, I feel better. Everything about me — my spirits — is just in a different space. Because I do it before work hours, it gives me a chance to think about everything that’s in front of me for the day. Like me, females will go towards cardio. They’ll go for cardio work and while they’re there, it gives them a chance to think for a while.

How wellness has changed for me: Watching professional fighters and their process changed everything for me. I don’t care how out of shape they are, they can make weight. [Editor’s note: Boxers frequently gain or lose weight to fight within a particular weight class. It’s referred to as “making weight.”] They’re training to perform on the highest level. In four weeks, you can see a guy who’s 180 pounds drop to 154 pounds. Like Floyd [Mayweather], he’s naturally 147 pounds, and he’ll fight at 152 or 154. He has Fatburgers during training camp. He doesn’t even like to stretch. Before his fight with Ortiz, we were in Orlando together and I was like, “Yo, when are you going to start [training]?” This was two in the morning in the nightclub. He goes: “I’ll start tonight.” When we left the nightclub, he pulled around the corner, put his clothes on in the backseat, and ran six miles.

My biggest wellness struggle is
: Dieting. It is the toughest part and the most important part. Usually, when people try to lose weight, they start eating less and it’s the exact opposite of what they’re supposed to be doing. You’re supposed to be continuously eating. If you eat one meal a day, like a salad, your body is just holding onto the fat from the dressing because it’s in survival mode. People don’t make the adjustments well.

How I eat when I’m alone: I can have a cheese sandwich and feel like it’s a full-on meal. That’s what was in the house when I was growing up. If you ask my grandma, she’ll tell you I like cranberry juice and that cheese always has to be around.

Related: Can Lemon Water Really Help You Lose Weight?

My wellness advice is: To be conscious of what you think is the best version of yourself. To create those goals and not necessarily feel like you have to do it the first day you go to the gym. What happens is, people will go in, they’ll train hard, and it will hurt. The recovery process will make you not want to come back tomorrow. If they haven’t stopped by GNC to get something that will help them recover, or they’re not taking any amino acids or something that would help them not feel completely fatigued following their workout, then there’s going to be a point when they won’t show up to the gym anymore. Also, trying to adjust to a healthier lifestyle. Child obesity in America is an extreme issue. It’s because kids are at the computer or on Playstation instead of at the park. Creating situations where kids can be active and physical is also the responsibility of the parents. If there are things like organized sports, they can actually get in and get out and get moving.

BRUH News: NAACP President Caught Lying About Being Black [VIDEO]

We’ve come across some incredulous bleaching Black culture cases in our day but Rachel Dolezal may go down as the most unbelievable instance.

The long-serving NAACP president of the Spokane, Washington chapter is being accused–and seemingly rightfully so–of lying about her ethnicity. Which, of course, in the case of the a NAACP president, is African-American.

Reports The Spokesman-Review:

Dolezal is the president of the Spokane chapter of the NAACP, chairwoman of the city’s Office of Police Ombudsman Commission, adjunct professor at Eastern Washington University and commentator in the Inlander weekly newspaper. Formerly she was director of education at the Human Rights Education Institute in Coeur d’Alene.

Dolezal’s mother, Ruthanne Dolezal, said Thursday by phone from her home in Northwest Montana that she has had no contact with her daughter in years. She said her daughter began to “disguise herself” in 2006 or 2007, after the family had adopted four African-American children and Rachel Dolezal had shown an interest in portrait art.

It’s very sad that Rachel has not just been herself,” Ruthanne Dolezal said. “Her effectiveness in the causes of the African-American community would have been so much more viable, and she would have been more effective if she had just been honest with everybody.”

Contacted at her EWU office, Dolezal avoided responding directly to questions about her ethnicity and race, saying she first needs to meet with members of the local NAACP chapter’s executive committee before having a broader discussion with the community about what she described as a “multi-layered” issue.

“I feel like that question is not as easy as it seems,” she said. “There’s a lot of complexities … and I don’t know that everyone would understand that.”

Later, in an apparent reference to studies tracing the origins of human life to Africa, Dolezal added: “We’re all from the African continent.”

She blames her parents’ comments on contentious litigation that has divided the family over allegations of past abuse.

You ain’t gotta lie to kick, my sister. You ain’t gotta try so hard. Ruthanne also told the publication the family’s ancestry is Czech, Swedish and German.

In a video interview with KXLY posted today (June 11), Dolezal’s face turned to stone when asked whether or not she was Black. Watch it below.

Boy’s Video About Being From A ‘Broken Home’ Has A Sweet, Unexpected Twist

Sure, Azka Corbuzier is growing up in what some might call a broken home — but thanks to the love and support of his parents, the 9 year old feels anything but broken.

In a sweet YouTube video that’s racked up more than 490,000 views, the Indonesian boy maps out his parents’ short-lived love story and says that his family has actually become stronger since the split.

“Everything went fine until I am 6 years old. We have a great family,” a caption reads as stick figure illustrations flash by. “Mom and dad start to argue on a lot of things… so they decide to divorce.”

He adds: “They told me about it and tell me not to worry and I don’t have to choose between them. They never fight anymore and we still go to malls and abroad together.”

In an interview with the BBC, Azka’s dad Deddy Corbuzier, a well-known illusionist and TV host in Indonesia, said he was surprised by the video — just as he was by his son’s initial reaction to the split. The first question Azka asked was, “Who should I go with?”

“We told him he will stay at the same house, and he said, ‘OK then — no problem’,” Deddy said, explaining that they renamed their home “Azka’s house” and that his ex-wife lives nearby and stops by nearly every day.

As Azka sums it up in his video, “It’s not a broken home when you still have the same love from your parents.”

Being Transgender; the Words That Hurt

Finneus is a female to male transgender person who identifies as a he, and lives in the Georgia area. He volunteered to be interviewed for a series of articles on what its like to be transgender and to answer some questions about how he feels about Caitlyn Jenner’s recent transition. This is the first in a series of articles on Being Transgender, and the people who care about them.

Vanity Fair’s recent photo spread in the July issue shows the new Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, with a cover photo of Caitlyn after facial surgery clearly identifying as a female. She is currently all the rage.

I asked Finneus and other transitioning people to talk about their life and how they feel about some of the issues that Caitlyn might be experiencing and what it is like to be transgender in our country today. I also interviewed the people that love them, work to empower them or counsel them. I have learned that the prejudice and bias around transgender is wide spread and can be hateful, yet it is also subtle, even among those of us who want to be empathetic. In order to debunk some of the myths and answer some of the bigger questions, I interviewed Finneus, and several other transgender people and I talked to other experts, the people who are living the struggles every day, and those that help them, and love them.

In the Vanity Fair article, Jenner describes her her transition, and says that winning the gold medal,

“…was a good day, but the last couple of days were better. . . This shoot was about my life and who I am as a person. It’s not about the fanfare, it’s not about people cheering in the stadium, it’s not about going down the street and everybody giving you ‘that a boy, Bruce,’ pat on the back, O.K. This is about your life.”

As a psychotherapist and sexologist (and nontrans or cisgender) writing this series I realized I knew much less than I thought about these issues. I found that many of my initial questions were offensive, including things like, what name do you want to use in the article? Which caused one interviewee to write me a lengthy and frustrated response about the names we choose to use versus real names and how many transgender folks don’t have the choices the rest of us have, and that all names are real, aren’t they? Or are they? I was unclear. Since then I have found myself more sensitive to the questions about what pronouns to use in the articles, and how to refer respectfully to names about identity, gender and sex and I tread more carefully in all matters related to choice.

From the Guide to Being a Trans Ally published by the PFLAG National’s Straight For Equality Project the following definitions are a direct quote and may help:

Sex refers to the biological, genetic or physical characteristics that define males and females. These can include genitalia, hormone levels and secondary sex characteristics (the things we often “read” as male or female, like body hair or body shape). Nearly everyone is assigned a sex at birth, and it tends to be one of two choices: Male or female.

Gender most often refers to a set of social, psychological and emotional traits, often influenced by societal expectations that classify an individual as feminine or masculine. We hear about gender all the time — traditional stereotypes about gender (e.g., women are nurturing while men are protective) and how they’ve traditionally influenced life choices (the nurturing woman goes into teaching, while the protective man garners a high-powered job to care for his family).

Sexual Orientation is an individual’s emotional, romantic or sexual feelings toward other people. People who are straight experience these feelings primarily for people of the opposite sex. People who are gay and lesbian experience these feelings primarily for people of the same sex. People who are bisexual experience feelings for people of both sexes.

Gender Identity is the term that is used to describe a person’s deeply held personal, internal sense of being male, female, some of both or maybe even neither. Here’s the important part: A person’s gender identity may not always correspond to their assigned biological sex. While an individual, at birth, may be assigned the term male based on biological characteristics, that person might not necessarily feel as though they are male, or were intended to be male.

A lot of experts in the field believe that awareness of gender identity is experienced in infancy, solidifies around age three and then gets reinforced in adolescence through how we teach youth about who boys and girls are expected to be.

Cisgender people identify with (or are on the same side of) the gender assigned to them at birth. For example, a cisgender woman is an individual who was assigned female at birth, and also identifies as female.

Transgender is a term often used to describe an individual whose gender identity does not necessarily match the sex assigned to them at birth. So we have transgender women (individuals who were assigned male at birth but whose gender identity is female) and we have transgender men (individuals who were assigned female at birth, but whose internal sense of their gender identity is male).

Some terms that you may hear are alternate ways of talking about being trans, while others might refer to specific identities that expand our understanding of what gender nonconformity:

Genderqueer. Gender nonconforming. Trans*. Transsexual. Bigender. Third sex. Female-tomale (FTM). Male-to-female (MTF). Gender-creative. Gender-colorful. Gender-expansive.

Transitioning refers to the process one goes through to discover and/or affirm their gender identity. The process can be a long journey and can take years.

Social transition: Change of name, pronoun selection, cosmetic modifications to appearance, dress, changes to an individual’s vocal tone, etc. For many people, this will also entail legal changes to their name and gender marker on identification documents like driver’s licenses and passports.

Medical transition: The introduction of hormones (testosterone for trans men, estrogen and testosterone blockers for trans women) into the body. For some people, it will also involve surgical procedures that align the physical body with one’s gender identification. These may include top surgery, bottom surgery, and, for trans women, facial feminization.

For more information, please go to the PFLAG National’s Straight For Equality Project.

Once I had the terminology down, I asked Finneus how he wanted to be identified. He is Transmasculine, FTM (female to male) and prefers the pronouns he and him. He would prefer to avoid identifying his relationship status. He is 27 years old and has been on hormones for three years, and has not had surgeries, only because he cannot afford them. He identifies as queer, or pansexual.

I wondered what Finneus thought Caitlyn might run into when it came to confusion around pronouns during her transition. What are the correct pronouns to use to call people who are transitioning, what is polite, what is kind, what is insulting? He said,

Basically whatever they identify with. I tend to ask people if I’m uncertain so I try not to make assumptions based on appearances. Generally I say something like; Do you have a set of preferred pronouns? If you’re unsure you could always ask someone else or listen to see what others call that person. I would much rather you ask what I prefer in regards to gender than misgender me. It is such a crushing blow to be called by the wrong gender.

I asked Finneus about Caitlyn Jenner’s coming out and what he thought she could expect during her transition process. Finneus explained that he was offended by people immediately asking and talking about her genitals. It seems a fascination and perhaps an inappropriate one. Finneus responded,

I hate when people ask me about my genitals. You wouldn’t walk up to a cisgender male and start asking him about his …[genitals] why would you walk up to me and start asking me about mine? O if I like penetration or anal. And these [questions] aren’t even from romantic partners, just random people. I heard two people at my office earlier having at least a five minute conversation on …[whether] Caitlyn grew a vagina.

To understand the struggles that transgender and transitioning folks go through I asked Finneus, as a young transman, his opinion about what interested and allied people could do to help? He was concerned about the conversation that Caitlyn Jenner’s privilege as a white, wealthy male to female would bring up in our culture.

I wondered, is Caitlyn a good role model? She can afford the privilege of transitioning, which in some countries is illegal, and in others is punishable by death. But many people in our country, although legal to obtain, don’t have access to because of the high cost of transitional surgeries and hormone therapies, and lack the support of family and friends. Would her very public appearances bring hope to young people or would it be discouraging and depressing to those who don’t have access to her resources?

“I think that it’s important to talk about privilege when discussing Caitlyn,” Finneus said.

I want to be clear that I don’t think money is the solution to everything. While money does help with hormones and surgeries it does very little to help the social stigma and emotional difficulties of transitioning. I think other people look at her and think, ‘oh it is so easy for her, she has the best plastic surgeons and doctors,’ but it’s still quite hard. So just imagine how hard it is for those without the means for gender affirming surgeries or hormones. I have known a lot of trans people who used sex work to pay for surgeries, as it would get them a lot of money quickly. I know people bust ass at a 9-5 office job and still can’t afford surgeries.

I wondered, with the very public appearance of Caitlyn Jenner do you think it will be safer for more people to come out? Including young people?

“On the one hand,” Finneus answered,

It’s more public now and people say positive things and you see a more positive reaction so you think it’s safe. But then you hear people say things that hurt and they don’t even know it. Take for example, my day at work today. We had a minor system outage and while we were out a few people started talking about Caitlyn. Some people were polite but others were so very hurtful and rude. People I thought were more open minded than that and some of them were even on the LGB spectrum. It really hurt to hear people I respected say things like that. Most people at work don’t know I’m trans though so they had no idea it would come so close to home.

In a country where some people may not be aware of the hurt they cause by being insensitive, more awareness is necessary. In a world where prejudice and hate still effect anyone who is different and stands out in a crowd we need to work together to reduce the shame and the bullying. Today transitioning young people may be threatened, they may experience physical abuse or worse. The suicide rate for trans youth is high in this country, and the homeless rate is skyrocketing.

For Finneus, the advice he has for other people who may be going through these issues?

Stay strong. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it. Life has struggle and sometimes it seems you may feel hopeless but there is a point where you will find love and work and family and acceptance. There is a thing going around right now — a hashtag on Twitter — #RealLifeTransAdult. It started as being encouraging to youth who are struggling but I think it’s encouraging to everyone really. Just hang in there. Reach out if you need to. There are people here for you that love you and understand you even if you’ve never met. I love all my trans brothers and sisters. I love all of you who struggle to be authentic to yourself — be yourself no matter how you identify.

The Time I Scared a Security Guard by Being an Old White Guy

The other day I was walking through a big hotel in San Diego, on my way to give a keynote speech for a corporate event. I was the only person at the conference without an ID badge and I wondered how hard it would be to talk my way past security.

I figured it would help that a life-size photo of me as the keynote presenter was sitting in the hallway by the entrance to the conference. My plan was to wait for security to stop me (if they even noticed) then point to the poster and breeze right in.

An alert security guard picked me out of the crowd and stopped me on my approach. I smiled and introduced myself as the keynote speaker, pointing to my life-sized photo as evidence.

That didn’t work.

I could tell that the guard had specific instructions to not let ANYONE in without a badge. And he would need to leave his post to check on me, which was not an option. What to do?

There was no real problem here. All I had to do was text my contact, who was probably a hundred feet away, and he would take me in. And I was plenty early, so time wasn’t an issue. I was all smiles and understanding. Perfectly patient. I understood the guard needed to do his job and was happy to let him.

I have never seen such a frightened employee. He was clearly afraid of losing his job. Somehow my carefree attitude had scared the bejeezus out of him.

I think I know why.

As a younger man, I was dubious that my maleness and my whiteness were conferring an advantage. I did not have the option of viewing the world through the eyes of others, and from my own vantage point I saw no special treatment for YOUNG white men. You can argue convincingly that I was blind to my advantage. But my point is that whatever advantage I had was never obvious to me in day-to-day dealings. I will admit to thinking the whole white-guy advantage was overblown.

Then I got older.

I have learned from experience that no one wants to fuck with a 58-year old white guy who speaks with confidence.

When I was in my twenties, people probably assumed I was a powerless member of society, and they would have been right. The only tools I had at my disposal were my inexperienced mind and my manly muscles that I was not allowed to use in business settings. I was no threat to anyone, and no immediate benefit to anyone. My memory is that people treated me that way, i.e. like dog shit. All the time.

Now fast-forward to my current age and imagine what this security guard saw coming at him.

Several hours before a big speech I begin a process that will focus all of my energy into a one-hour block of my day. I’m in a great mood, because I enjoy speaking, but my intensity is probably palpable. And I have a confident manner in general, whether I feel that way or not. (Yeah, I know it isn’t always a good thing.)

I have realized over time that when a white male my age talks with confidence, people assume he must be a CEO of something, or important in some way. And everyone assumes that guy has weapons.

They are right. Thanks to experience, I know how to get people fired if I need to. I can send lawyers after people if necessary. I know what buttons to push and when. I know how to negotiate, persuade, threaten, and scare. I know how to get inside someone’s head and turn them inside out. I have connections. I have experience. I have resources.

In a word, I’m dangerous.

At my current age, I feel my white-guy advantage kicking in all the time. People treat me with deference and respect even if they don’t know what I do for a living. As soon as I open my mouth, people start worrying that I might be the boss of something important because of how I look and act.

The security guard eventually waved me through, but he was literally shaking by the time he decided that doing what I wanted him to do was the best way of keeping his job. And I got that just by being polite and patient. He still didn’t want to take a chance.

I’m wondering if my experience is common. I assume age confers advantages to all demographic groups. Have you found that to be true in your experience?
