Its opening notes must be the most famous ever written, a “motto” identifying not only the composer but the whole concept of classical music. What makes four notes immortal? Is it the way they are remorselessly hammered into the listener’s ears? Never before had Beethoven addressed his audience so directly and with such force, never again was he to reduce his compositional forces to such a piercing focus as in this Fifth Symphony. The remarkably brief opening movement is utterly dominated by the ostensibly trivial “fate knocking at the door” motto; no contrasting idea is developed to compete with it. The slow variation movement consists mostly of figurative reworkings of its comforting theme, strikingly subdivided by the three trumpet-led C major interruptions that presage a happy ending. The unexpected return of the fateful motto in the third movement blocks off this view again – a delay that only sharpens the longing for deliverance in the finale. The bars leading to the final Allegro permit no break between the movements, straining with incomparable anticipatory force towards their symphonic goal: the crowning glory of C major. This movement is a cry of exultation rising above all that has gone before, with its blazing energy, with themes that always come across clearly in all their many and varied forms, and with a simply boundless joy that makes sense only from the perspective of the whole work, but is then irresistible. Like no other symphony, Beethoven’s Fifth embodies the idea of “per aspera ad astra”; like no other, it gives the impression of a psychological journey in which the traveller runs up against obstacles and has to find ways over or around them. This process of continuing development, with a certain healing effect in the music itself, is written into many of Beethoven’s works and helps to explain why they have kept their appeal for two centuries. In Beethoven’s Fifth, the whole symphony tacitly expresses this climb up the stairway to heaven.

Birkenstock and Berlin Porcelain Maker KPM Join Forces on Limited-Edition Sandal Collection

Strange Bedfellows: On the heels of its most recent collaboration with Rick Owens as well as this year’s assorted Birkenstock Box cooperations with retailers the world over, the footwear maker has tapped a somewhat unlikely royal partner for the latest take on the brand’s iconic Arizona and Gizeh cork footbed sandals: KPM Berlin.
Founded in 1763 and thus 11 years older than Birkenstock, the highly respected Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur provided its Kurland Royal Noir pattern as well as a signature porcelain inset for the limited-edition Birkenstock x KPM. There are four models in all, the Arizona and Gizeh in black-on-black embossed leather, and both models in a black and gold Royal Noir print. Limited to 300 pieces per style, the sandals are available exclusively at Berlin’s leading premium department store KaDeWe through June 9, as well as online at birkenstock.com for 280 euros a pop. For those who’d like to wear their Birkenstocks and have a matching cup of coffee, too, a large-sized KPM Kurland Royal Noir cup and saucer will set one back 1,190 euros.
The special edition was feted Thursday night with a cocktail reception at the third-floor Birkenstock X KPM pop-up shop at KaDeWe, which featured the Birkenstock sandals, items from

For the Easter Festival 2017 in Baden-Baden, Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker draw their inspiration from Tosca, the most brilliant of all the Puccini operas. And that is deservedly so, since Tosca is not merely a work of art, but also a gripping suspense-packed story. With Kristine Opolais as Tosca and a spectacular staging by Philipp Himmelmann this production offers a fresh view on this beloved classic.

Dior Expands in Germany With First Berlin Flagship

DIOR’S ARTISTIC BERLIN: Dior is growing its retail footprint in Germany with the French fashion house’s first stand-alone store in Berlin. Opening Saturday, the flagship at number 56 on this designer-studded stretch of Kurfürstendamm is marked by assorted artistic features. It provides the latest example of Berlin’s long-standing practice of incorporating art into retail environments.
Fabricated out of repurposed materials, the shop’s metal furniture by designer Stefan Leo, who has contributed to other Dior interiors, creates trompe l’oeil effects. Prague’s graffiti pioneer, Jan Kaláb, provided a softer note with his rounded, abstract LB Bubble artworks, while the Versailles parquet floors in the women’s department recalls Christian Dior’s personal fondness for the 18th century.
The store houses the Dior women’s and men’s collections, jewelry and perfume, and joins Dior German flagships in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich, as well as dedicated spaces in KaDeWe Berlin, Oberpollinger Munich and Breuninger in Stuttgart. The company would not comment on further expansion plans in Europe’s strongest economy.

Damir Doma to Show Men’s, Women’s Fall Collections in Berlin

BERLIN — Damir Doma has been chosen to launch a new initiative, Fashion HAB, during Berlin Fashion Week in January.
In co-operation with the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (CNMI), the Milan-based designer will present his men’s and women’s fall 2018 collections exclusively in Berlin this season.
Hosted by The Fashion Council Germany (FCG) in partnership with Mercedes-Benz, Fashion HAB will be the closing event on Jan. 17. The event takes its name from its venue, Halle am Berghain, Berlin’s most famous techno club.
It is a Berlin catwalk debut for Doma, though in 2010, the designer staged a Fashion Week happening at another of the capital’s techno clubs, E-Werk. In an interesting twist, E-Werk is this season’s new venue for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week runway shows.
“I grew up in Germany and lived in Germany most of my life, so I still consider it as one of my home markets,” Doma told WWD. “I believe the situation is actually quite interesting as there is a new generation of followers and clients coming up. (It’s) a new generation that is much more sensitive to fashion and to global trends, and therefore I think that Germany will become one of the most important markets for

Lala Berlin RTW Spring 2016

The threat of an impending storm didn’t stop guests from gathering on the patio of the Kronprinzenpalais for Lala Berlin’s alfresco “Garden Party” show. Fans of the brand should start doing their sit-ups now: Crop tops were out in force on the runway — from bandeaux in a pale cream circular print paired with matching wide-leg pants to a bralette peeking out from underneath a mannish azure-blue blazer with matching shorts.

Designer Leyla Piedayesh also used graphic prints — in a mix of blue, canary yellow, black and white — throughout the collection, on a fitted pantsuit, floor-length evening gowns, silk shorts and sequined palazzo pants. Long, loose cotton broderie-anglaise dresses with thin straps were shown in black or white and dipped sweetly at the back, but were a little too transparent to be properly demure. Lala also gave a new edge to her signature knitwear this season. The hems of a black-and-white knitted tunic were left frayed and worn over a matching skirt with tiered woolen tassles for extra dimension.

ElektroCouture Launches in Time for Berlin Fashion Week

TECH-TO-WEAR: Berlin-based Start-up ElektroCouture launched its first ready-to-wear collection on Asos Marketplace online on the eve of Berlin Fashion Week on Monday.
The fashion technology house established in 2014 launched a collection of 10 pieces. The selection includes a jacket with lights created in collaboration with Polish fashion designer Mia Manu and a glowing scarf with a warming feature that is nominated for the recently launched Wearable IT/Fashion Technology prize by the Berlin Senate.
It’s the first ready-to-wear fashion tech collection available via e-tail, the founder claimed. “There is no ready-to-wear fashion tech at the moment, but the fact that Google has teamed up with Levi’s to create [a] wearable jeans is an important signal, the time is right for it,” said Lisa Lang, founder and chief executive officer of the fashion start-up. “However, the practical considerations are at the very beginning: are the clothes wearable on an everyday base, are they pretty, are they cleanable?”
ElektroCouture will present designs at the Microsoft Digital Eatery and will be part of the Fashion Tech Hub by Premium Exhibitions during Fashion Week on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Berlin Fashion Week Preview: Mix It Up

A climate of change appears to be developing in Europe’s largest, strongest, but also most stubbornly set fashion market: Germany.
When Berlin Fashion Week takes off July 7 to 10, the city will be hosting more than a dozen trade fairs and platforms, plus about 50 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin runway shows and presentations. Representing almost every conceivable orientation and apparel category — mainstream to niche designers, streetwear to alpine folkloric, high-tech to green, large sizes to kids — Berlin’s ever-expanding offerings have sometimes been criticized as a disconnect in a retail environment where safety and sameness reigns.
Despite a healthy overall consumer climate, German apparel retail sales continue to lag. Average sales for 2015 to date are down 2 to 3 percent compared with the same period last year, “and things weren’t so great then, either,” noted Jürgen Dax, director of the German Apparel Retailers Association. “Many customers simply aren’t coming into the stores. Everything is always available via the Internet, and other leisure activities seem to be more attractive [than shopping].”
Yet Dax noted German retailers are shifting from the defensive to the offensive to consider what they can do to make their stores more interesting, noteworthy and appealing. He predicted

Berlin Fashion Week: Ones To Watch

PHILOMENA ZANETTI
Designer: Julia Leifert
Founded: 2014
Based in: Berlin
Showing: Premium
Backstory: Green might be in its genes, but Julia Leifert’s Philomena Zanetti brand puts design first.
“People don’t want green clothes because there’s a stereotype: green is not sexy, it’s not modern and it’s not wearable,” she said. “I want to show them that great design can be also green.”
The fledgling line, named for Leifert’s great-great-grandmother, presents graceful minimalist separates that are environmentally sustainable and made with fair labor. Her spring capsule collection, showing at Premium, is inspired by feminine styles of the Fifties — modernized in linen, cotton and Tencel. The 10 looks include cropped and kimono jackets, a pencil skirt and short and long trousers. A full-legged, bare-shouldered jumpsuit can be dressed up for evening.
Among a natural and neutral palette of blues, tan and cream are orange accents, and a wool blend in navy, green and camel.
Leifert said the simple design puts the focus on the hard-to-find fabrics. Her production is certified Global Organic Textile Standard, as is much of the material. She intends the clothes to be sturdy, wearable and timeless.
Always a fashion fan, Leifert, who grew up near Heidelberg, first got a law degree. She sought wearable, ethical clothes

Berlin Raw To The Bone

Director Oskur Garcia makes a cum-filled debut offering up a gritty look at the sex lives of Berlins hottest and dirtiest pigs. Raw To The Bone opens with a no-holds-barred sex scene featuring Ivan and Simon; two hot uncut fuckers, a couple of toys and an iPhone… Thats right shoving anything in sight up Simons eager hole. Cristo and Arno take a cab ride through the city, groping each other in the back seat before arriving at their destination and rimming, sucking and fucking till loads explode.

Arkaitz and Michael find a nice, dark alley and armed with a phone light, give us a taste of the raw, uninhibited pounding Michael is about to take. When they move it into the living room, they worship each others thick cocks before Arkaitz preps his nasty bottom for another smashing.

Chris shaves his uncut cock bare before jerking off, fantasizing about ravaging his neighbor Arno Serbans hole. Cristo is ready for action as he waits by his window, searching for another top to please when he sees Xavi. The next thing you know, Cristo is sucking on Xavis cock and playing with his massive precum string and taking his big, raw dick up the ass.

David and Ivan climb up to a building rooftop for a fresh air suck and flip-flop fuck session. Ivan is on his knees in seconds, sucking cock, before turning David around and ravaging his ass. David gets a piece of the anal rampage and fucking the daylights out of Ivan and both shooting massive loads all over each other.

Felix submits to Nils hard thrusts without any inhibition. Alex, a fiery Spanish cock hound, is yet another find. After greedily rimming muscle pig Jakes ass crack, Alex relentlessly pounds his ass and shoots a geyser of semen into his own face. Big Joris has a monster cock!
