Porter Magazine Brings Incredible Women Series to U.S.

Porter magazine is bringing its Incredible Women List of 50 entries, which was published last month in its winter issue, to life with two events in the U.S. Tonight editor in chief Lucy Yeomans will host a question-and-answer with Misty Copeland, who was featured on the list, in New York and on Nov. 1 the magazine’s second annual Incredible Woman Gala will take place in Los Angeles at NeueHouse, hosted by Yeomans and Donna Langley, chairman of Universal Pictures. Both events are done in partnership with Estée Lauder.
The talk with Copeland is the fourth in Porter’s series, which previously featured Serpentine chief executive officer Yana Peel, conservationist Saba Douglas-Hamilton, and film director Sofia Coppola. Last year’s gala was held at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and instead of staging a typical awards show, Yeomans enlisted a company called Letter’s Live to create a performance element in which Natalia Vodianova, Christiane Amanpour and Florence Welch read letters Patti Smith, Martha Gellhorn and Tina Fey. This year’s gala will feature a similar performance aspect. “We look to celebrate women who in the past year have done something to affect positive change for women either in their field, industry or the

Hunter Brings Experiential Pop-up to Grand Central Terminal

Who knows how many pairs of Hunter’s famous rubber wellies walk through Grand Central Terminal on an average rainy day in New York City? The brand is entering Grand Central in a more polished and ambitious way for four days with a pop-up shop in Vanderbilt Hall from Oct. 22 to 25 set up like a traditional glass greenhouse complete with mist and moss to bring a bit of Scotland to New York City. All the better to show Hunter’s raingear in its natural habitat.
The brand’s creative director Alasdhair Willis is aware that many New Yorkers are probably unaware that Hunter was founded in Scotland by an American named Henry Lee Norris in 1856. “Despite the familiarity with the brand we realized that our heritage and our birthplace were something that many did not know about, but we think would be interested to find out about,” said Willis. “We wanted to contrast the grandeur and magnificence of Grand Central Terminal with a minimalist architectural installation capturing the essence of the Highlands, contradicting its surroundings and really standing out amongst the frenetic environment of so many passing through the Terminal each day.” The U.S. is the company’s biggest market.
Hunter’s product range extends

Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts Brings Destiny 2 To Life In New Trailer

Bungie brings Hollywood to the gaming world by tapping director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) for their new Destiny 2 trailer.

After taking on the gigantic task of bringing the iconic movie ape to life, Roberts was ready to take on something a bit smaller and his love for video games brought him to Bungie.

With the launch of Destiny 2 now just days away from blessing our favorite consoles with greatness, Bungie’s latest trailer is right on time. In the comical trailer, Cayde-6, voiced by Nathan Fillion, is breaking in a trio of new Guardians.

While hilariously pointing out to them all of the wonders of the Earth such as skinny lattes, binge watching, and puppies are now gone, in the same breath he points out why it’s crucial that they must protect the last city from a “psycho rhino” named Ghaul.  The trailer manages to build excitement for the game without even showing any in-game footage.

That is perfectly fine though cause we’ve already seen and experienced enough of the game thanks to the Beta that dropped a few weeks back.

Destiny 2 officially launches on September 6 on PS4 and XBOX One and if you pre-ordered the game you gain access to the Coldheart Exotic Rifle.

Checkout the Jordan Vogt-Roberts-directed Trailer below.

Anderson .Paak Brings The Soul In 2 New Songs | Wired Tracks 11.9.15

Ask your favorite rapper which artist is next to blow up, and you’re sure to hear West Coast crooner and producer Anderson .Paak’s name come up at least once (or multiple times according to this video).

Listeners echo similar sentiments, as .Paak made waves last year via his free album Venice and with tracks like his Knxwledge collab “Suede.” But 2015 brought a major win in a major role on Dr. Dre’s Compton album (the story was detailed by LA Weekly). Now comes a pair of new releases from .Paak titled “The Season/Carry Me” and “Am I Wrong,” the former of which Dre premiered on Beats 1 Radio.

9th Wonder produced the first half of “The Season/Carry Me,” while Callum Connar handled the second part. Blended Babies crafted the sonics on “Am I Wrong.”

Stream both records in Wired Tracks below, where songs from Wiz Khalifa, couple Lil Durk & Dej Loaf, Juicy J, and more below.

Malik Yusef Brings Back G.O.O.D. Fridays With New Mixtape

In the spirit of Kanye West’s infamous G.O.O.D. Friday series, 5x Grammy Award Winner Malik Yusef releases G.O.O.D. Morning G.O.O.D. Night The “Leaquel,” Unheard & Unfinished Joints. As the title implies, tracks on this project are comprised of leaked material from previous G.O.O.D. Music sessions, and unheard gems from prior releases like Common’s “Nobody’s Smiling,” and “Sin City” off Cruel Summer.

What started out as just a studio album back in 2009 has now transformed into a full-fledged series. The third installment to the now trilogy follows up last year’s summer release of G.M.G.N. Deconstructed, which saw features from Mr. West himself, Big Sean, KRS-One, Adam Levine, GLC, Common, John Legend, Twista & others. The release garnered over 7MM total impressions.

As reported earlier, features on the new mixtape come courtesy of G.O.O.D. Music’s CyHi The Prynce on “We Ain’t Playin’” & producer Travis Scott on “Sin City (Original)” – and others such as Raheem DeVaughn, Chip Tha Ripper, JV, Grande Marshall, Young Savage, Ab-Liva, Black, Kentrell, and YouTube sensations Andrew Garcia, Jay Hayden, The Johnsoton Brothers, Brandon Skeie, J. Rice, Casey Cooper, and new comer Megan Elizabeth. Production duties handled this time around come predominately from Nate “Impact” Jolley & D.Cross, as well as Tommy Brown, Big Duke, Rami, Brian K. Bolton, Kevin M. Cairns, Hit Fluid Blue, KC, Mind Killa, Mizzy Beats, and The 11th Hour.

Thomas Rhett brings retro soul to country radio

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The initial market testing on a handful of new songs from country singer Thomas Rhett, including his first single, "Crash and Burn," wasn't promising. "So the feedback came back on 'Crash,' I think the feedback said 'poor,'" Rhett said of the funky song with a beat emphasized with whistles and snaps. "So for us to put 'Crash' out with that kind of feedback was kinda scary and risky at the same time." But the song hit No. …

Hermès Brings ‘Flânerie’ Exhibition to Paris

RIVER DANCE: Hermès found a terrific location for the Paris leg of its roving “Wanderland” exhibition dedicated to flânerie, or the act of wandering the city streets and drinking in the details of everyday life. The French house perchaed a rectangular tent on the riverbank roads known as Les Berges that are now closed to traffic and open for leisure and fitness – or just sitting in a cafe and watching the world go by.
Hosting a press preview on Thursday morning, Pierre-Alexis Dumas, artistic director of Hermès, described the exhibition as an invitation to discover flânerie, a philosophy and practice with roots in the 19th-century, and distinctly Parisian.
Indeed, the fantastical displays are designed to disorient, and command attention to fine – and often funny – details. Consider the French bulldog sporting an Hermès dinner plate in lieu of a collar in front of a thumping venue signed “Hot Dog Club” – or café tables inset with quirky objects that give clues about the person who sat there.
“Wanderland” debuted at the Saatchi Gallery in London last April and attracted some 112,000 visitors, according to Hermès. It is headed to Dubai next January and slated to make stops in China and Korea

Future Brings Out Drake & Norm Kelly In Toronto [VIDEO]

Future knows how to pay homage. The Atlanta rapper brought out Serena Williams’ bad luck charm Drake and Norm Kelly (a politician and Meek Mill slanderer) while performing in Toronto.

Reports the Smoking Section:

There’s still no mixtape between Drake and Future yet, or any further telltale signs that it’s even happening since Thursday’s initial buzz. However, Future played Toronto University university on Friday night and the 6 God, of course, made sure he was well received in the city. Drake didn’t come alone either, bringing with him councilman Norm Kelly, the politician who issued the no-fly zone warning to Meek Mill at the outset of that whole fiasco.

Always pay your respects to the 6 God(s).

Meek Mill Brings Out Nicki Minaj At Made In America Festival [Photos]

Meek Mill rocked the main stage (Rocky Stage) at the Made In America Festival and didn’t even mention Drake. There was no need to as the hometown hero ran through his catalog of hits and brought out Nicki Minaj for good measure.

The “Amen” rapper still raps over his songs instead of the instrumentals, the sold out crowd didn’t seem to mind as they sang along to hits like “House Party” and “Believe It.”

But the crowd cheered the loudest when Nicki Minaj strutted on the stage, eventually performing “All Eyes On You” with her boyfriend.

However, Meek’s closing song, the “Dreams and Nightmares Intro” is what really got the crowd lit.

Luciano Benetton Brings “Imago Mundi” Art Exhibition Back to Venice

Two years after launching at the Querini Stampalia Foundation, an expanded version of Luciano Benetton’s “Imago Mundi: Map of the New Art” traveling exhibition is making a return to Venice. The new version will be open from Sept. 1 to Nov. 1 at the Giorgio Cini Foundation.
The exhibition will include 6,930 works — all measuring 3.9 inches by 4.7 inches — by both emerging and established artists from around the world.
Part of the Luciano Benetton Collection, “Imago Mundi: Map of the New Art” aims to break social and cultural boundaries and divisions by highlighting the universality of artistic language.
“Ideas, meanings and inspirations are not monopolized products, but fluid and evolving expressions born of interaction and communication between East and West, North and South, and through the convergence of cultural experience,” Benetton said. “We look to the new frontiers of art—personalities, countries, emerging languages and different cultures—to foster openness towards the world and the coexistence of expressive diversity.”
By the end of the year, the constantly evolving art project, which is supported by the Benetton Studies and Research Foundation, will have involved more than 20,000 artists from 100 countries via art exhibitions, catalogues, events, as well as the imagomundiart.com online platform.

Kanye West Brings Rihanna Onstage For Surprise Performance At FYF Fest

Kanye West just pulled a Taylor Swift.

During his performance at FYF Fest on Saturday in Los Angeles, the rapper (who filled in for Frank Ocean) surprised the audience when he brought Rihanna onstage with him. The resident bad gal also seemed surprised, as she was just taking in the show from the crowd.

But like the pro she is, RiRi took the mic when West handed it to her during his performance of “FourFiveSeconds,” which she’s featured on. She then turned to the crowd and said, “LA, make some noise for my n***a Kanye!”

The rapper, who’s married to reality queen Kim Kardashian, also got the Barbadian performer up onstage to sing her part of “All of the Lights.” Naturally, the audience went nuts.

You can check out some video highlights below:

West was a last-minute addition to the roster, stepping in for Ocean, who dropped out last week, Gossip Cop reported.

”We’re really sorry that due to a scheduling conflict beyond our control, Frank Ocean is not going to be able to appear at FYF Festival as planned,” Ocean’s reps said in a statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly.

They added that he “had really been looking forward to the performance and to seeing all of his fans.” But West paid homage to his fellow hip-hop artist by opening his set with the track “No Church in the Wild,” which features Ocean’s vocals.

Kanye West to the rescue — all day, all day.

Why Divorce Brings out the Lawyers (And How to Avoid It!)

There’s a men’s support group I speak to once in a while. I really enjoy it. It’s full of other dads who have experienced divorce, and it’s a chance for these guys to communicate and express themselves. Whenever I go, I find it empowering and amazing to be part of that journey. Seeing grown men vulnerable, with an open heart wanting to move on in a healthy way is a wonderful thing.

It’s great to share and hear what other guys are going through, so you don’t feel isolated, and alone.

Whatever you go through in life, you can be sure other people are going through it too. Our situations are not as unique as we think they are. When you’re ready to be around and communicate with other like-minded individuals on a similar journey, it’s something I highly recommend.

One of the guys in the group has been having a problem lately with his ex. He’s a good guy. He has a couple of kids and he fully supports his ex, financially and with co-parenting. The problem is, she constantly takes jabs at him, as if they’re still married.

His focus is on being a good father to his children. He’s made an effort to apologize and make amends for the part he played in the relationship breaking down. Yet she’s still angry at him, she still feels wronged by what happened between them. She hasn’t let go or moved on.

It got to the point in his divorce where the kids were becoming a battle. He looked at me and he said, “You know, this is the last thing I wanted to do, but I can’t talk to this person anymore. It’s all about her. I want to get a lawyer. I want the lawyer to talk to her.”

Unfortunately, this is all too common and really sad. Lawyers are just paid henchmen going after whatever they can get. I’ve seen too many divorces go that direction, where the lawyers have ripped it to pieces. I told him he needed to try and make it work, for himself and his kids. He said. “David, I can’t stand having this person not listening, and now using my kids as pawns.”

It makes me sad. Two people who once loved each other enough to be together and to start a family, now can’t even face talking to each other. It makes the problem exponentially worse once you start using children as pawns.

The key is compassion, and acceptance that all relationships are 50/50. Each person is partly responsible for everything that happens in the beginning, middle, and end of the relationship. It’s never just one partner who causes the end. Until you accept joint responsibility, you’re going to run the risk of the lawyers taking over and ripping it to shreds.

Jeezy Brings Out Kanye West, OutKast, T.I. & More At Epic ‘Let’s Get It: TM 101′ 10th Anniversary Concert

Saturday night it was history celebrating history as Atlanta belonged to Grammy nominated star Jeezy. He performed to a sold out house at the iconic Fox Theatre (the show sold out day it went on sale) and the crowd, who rapped all of the lyrics with him, showed love to their city’s own in an incredible way. As he was celebrating the 10 year anniversary of his classic debut (on a major label) album, Thug Motivation 101, he was joined by his friends to help him celebrate.

Performing the classic album in its entirety, Jeezy also wanted to remind the crowd that he has other huge hits. He ran through a string of classics, including “I Do,” with Andre 3000 joining him on stage, “Love In The Club,” with Usher on stage, “Put On” with Kanye West joining him on stage and more. Other artists who graced the stage included Big Boi, Mannie Fresh, Lloyd, Bun B, T.I. and Lil’ Scrappy. There was even a Boyz N Da Hood reunion! Almost all of Atlanta showed up and showed out in celebration of Jeezy’s 10 years of success. ATLiens brought the house down! Other celebs who came out included Monica, Da Brat, Jermaine Dupri and more.

Jeezy kicked off his 10th anniversary weekend with a private dinner to honor his accomplishments as well as relaunch his charity, Street Dreamz Foundation, on Friday. The dinner brought out everyone from the Mayor of Atlanta to other artists and key influencers. Mayor Kasim Reed gave Jeezy the highest honor a city can give. On Saturday morning, Jeezy and Street Dreamz Foundation organized a community event to help clean up a neighborhood in the 4th District. Check out photos from the classic concert below. Sonia Rykiel Brings Pop-up Concept to London

STUDY GROUP: After Paris and Tokyo, Sonia Rykiel is bringing its new store concept to London. Its boutique on Brook Street is to reopen on July 25 after being refitted as a pop-up cafe-cum-library featuring 15,000 vintage tomes.
The concept, developed by Sonia Rykiel artistic director Julie de Libran with André Saraiva and art director Thomas Lenthal, was first unveiled in the brand’s store in the Paris neighborhood of Saint-Germain-des-Prés for its fall show in March. The store in the Aoyama neighborhood in Tokyo was similarly revamped in April.
Open since 2002, the 2,700-square-foot London store will feature a carpet designed by Saraiva, in addition to a lacquered red ceiling and walls. In addition to the books, it will display a selection of vintage vinyl records by French singers from the Sixties and Seventies, including Serge Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy.
The space will be dotted with Seventies sofas and armchairs, while the patio will take on the look of a literary café with chairs and tables.
The store will sell an exclusive version of the best-selling Domino bag. Made of khaki crocodile leather, it will retail for 13,695 pounds, or around $ 21,300 at current exchange.

Swizz Beatz Brings Chris Brown & Lil Wayne To Haiti For Free Concert [Photos]

The people of Haiti recently were blessed with an American Hip-Hop treat after Swizz Beatz assembled the forgotten “Transform Ya” trio of himself, Chris Brown and Lil Wayne for a free concert witnessed in front of more than 100,000 appreciative fans.

The event took place on June 26 at the historical Champs De Mars Parc in downtown Port-au-Prince, and was organized by Swizz Beatz and Haitian music production company Big O Productions.

“Putting together this concert was important to me because I wanted to provide the Haitian people a platform of hope and unity through music,” explains Big O Productions CEO Olivier Martelly. “With this concert, we were able to do just that, the crowd connected with the artists and we were able to experience all those emotions as they watched the performances.”

Up-and-coming Haitian superstars Barikad Crew, T-Micky and DJ Tonymix also performed and former Game of War thirst trap Kate Upton, Haitian-American boxer Andre Berto and Def Jam records exec Bu Thiam were also in attendance.

Flip through the gallery to see how Haiti is receptive to some great performances.

Artist Melissa McGill’s Constellation Brings the Stars Down to Earth

constellations

On Friday night, I battled the inevitable end-of-week desire to do absolutely nothing, and instead dragged myself through the gauntlet of Grand Central Station with a colleague so that we could board the 5:30 p.m. commuter train to Beacon. In the city, the sky was ominous, toggling between storm clouds and sun, but by the time we emerged from Grand Central’s cell-phone-deadening matrix of tunnels into the calm of Upper Manhattan, the sun was out and our expedition seemed blessed by the weather gods. We were headed upstate to get on a boat that would take us out onto the Hudson so that we could view artist Melissa McGill’s new light installation, Constellation, located on the tiny outcropping of Pollepel Island in the middle of the river.

If you’ve ever joined the hordes of athleisure-clad weekend warriors who stream up to Cold Spring in warm weather for a pre-brunch scramble up Breakneck Ridge, or if you’ve ever just taken the Metro-North up the Hudson, you’ve probably noticed Pollepel Island—though there’s a decent chance you wouldn’t know to call it that. The island sits about 1,000 feet off the shores of Beacon, across the river from Storm King Mountain. Perched on top of it are the ruins of a mysterious castle. As of this past weekend, it also holds seventeen flag poles topped with blue tinted LED bulbs (better for birds), which, every night for the next two years, will flicker on in an animated, organically inspired sequence. As the sun goes down, the poles recede into darkness, and for two hours the lights glow like a low-hanging cluster of stars, dipping in and around the ragged stone walls of the ruined fortress.

It was speculation about the castle that first kindled McGill’s interest in the site. She’s lived and worked in Beacon for eight years, but a decade ago she was a Greenpoint-based artist who, like the rest of us, occasionally found herself on the Metro-North fantasizing about the wilds of upstate. During those rides, and later, once she moved and regularly rode back into the city, she’d eavesdrop on the conversations around her about the strange castle out the window. “I heard someone say, That’s from the seventeenth century. That it was built by a king. Someone said it was a theater set,” McGill told Vogue.com over the phone. “There’s all sorts of mythology.” When she moved, she asked around the community, and received more unlikely answers. “Most people who live in this area have never been there,” she said. “I’d hear ‘Oh, it’s filled with snakes,’ ‘There’s bats,’ ‘It’s covered in poison ivy.’ All these very dramatic, mysterious stories. And so I thought you couldn’t go there.”

In fact, you can go there, as she eventually discovered. The castle was built at the turn of the 20th century by an army-navy surplus dealer named Francis Bannerman, who purchased the island after concerns about his large stockpiles of explosives forced him to move his operation from Manhattan. On his new land, he built a summer home for his family and a series of turreted arsenals that would serve both as storage and as an ornate advertisement for the used military goods he bought and sold. Bannerman died in 1918, and by 1920 his fantasyland had begun to crumble: first when a gunpowder explosion damaged the arsenals, then when a fire further destroyed the complex in 1969. By then, the Bannerman family had sold the land to New York State, which incorporated it into the Hudson Highlands State Park. Over the years, the parks department has partnered with the Bannerman Castle Trust to clean up leftover explosives, stabilize the structures, restore the gardens originally planted by Bannerman’s wife (not-so-fun fact: Angelika Graswald, the woman who has been charged with killing her fiancé while kayaking on the river this spring, was one of the volunteers who gardens every Wednesday), and, since 2004, lead public historical tours.

For McGill, the island became an impossible-to-ignore art prompt so potent that she’s dedicated the past three years of her life, and independently raised more than half a million dollars, to bring Constellation to fruition. It’s a process that’s involved help from a “galaxy” of people—more than a hundred, she says—including art-world mentors like outgoing Creative Time president (and incoming director of the Brooklyn Museum of Art) Anne Pasternak, Museum of Modern Art director Glenn Lowry, and Polich Tallix owner Dick Polich, whose fine art foundry engineered the highly complex installation. (“On a bedrock island in the Hudson River, with this difficult topography, with a fragile ruin on it that’s a historical landmark,” McGill reminded me.)

It’s been not only a passion project for the artist; it’s been a way of negotiating a still relatively new life upstate. Before her twins, now ten, were born, McGill had five solo shows—in London; Memphis, Tennessee; Columbus, Ohio; Bologna, Italy; and New York City—within the space of a couple years. But then motherhood, as well as the disorientation of moving, sent her into an incubation period. “It took me a little while to get reconnected with my work,” she said. “It wasn’t easy in the beginning.” During that period of relative dormancy, McGill was influenced heavily by two experiences: watching Robert Irwin speak at Parsons, and seeing Tino Sehgal’s 2010 piece, This Progress, at the Guggenheim Museum, in which visitors to the museum were led up the central ramp by guides of ascending ages, while engaging in conversations about the meaning of progress. “I was ripe for some kind of transition and I was really taken by the idea of the experience of the work, perception, the way that a viewer could interact or be part of the work,” said McGill.

In the empty space of the ruined castle, and in the questions that arose surrounding those ruins, McGill found a powerful symbol of absence and presence, a theme that has always fascinated her. The installation’s seventeen points of light hover atop poles of different heights, which reference the original heights of Bannerman’s structure, mapping out the now mostly missing buildings. But they also reference a more profound absence: that of the Lenape tribe of Native Americans who inhabited the area long before Dutch settlers named the island Pollepel. When McGill showed Hadrien Coumans of the Lenape Center her initial renderings, he connected it with his tribe’s legend of Opi Tamakan, a path of stars that links this world to the spirit world. It was perfect kismet. “That was part of my idea already,” explained McGill. “This path of stars that marks a path between past and present, light and darkness, and heaven and earth.”

When we met during Friday’s boat ride, McGill, dressed in black capris, fuchsia Vans, and a boxy white sleeveless shirt, was ebullient, as bubbly as the Prosecco we were served on the short trip out to the island. She has a tendency to grab your shoulder as she talks to you, and it’s clear that her personal warmth must have been instrumental in wrangling the massive amounts of help and support needed to make her complicated public art vision a reality.

Later McGill would try to explain her work to me in terms of the language of finches—the spaces between chirps communicate as much as the chirps themselves, she says—but on the boat, cerebral frameworks paled in comparison to the elemental, almost magical experience of Constellation. As we puttered toward the island, birds dive-bombed through the vacant windows of Bannerman’s façade. The rosy stone of the castle walls glowed against an eclectic green mountain backdrop. The sun lowered in the sky and a Creamsicle sunset formed on the horizon. We weren’t alone: A speedboat parked off the rocky shore of the island, and a group of kayakers (Storm King Adventure Tours leads trips to see the lights) gathered nearby. Even on our boat, populated by a boisterous crowd of journalists just beginning to get tipsy, the anticipation felt palpable.

“How do you feel?” I asked McGill when she wandered by as we circumnavigated the island, waiting for nightfall. “I feel like I can’t believe this happened!” she said, a huge smile on her face. Later on the phone, I posed the question again. “There’s this ancient Arab proverb I’ve been thinking about for a very long time,” she told me. “ ‘Throw your heart out in front of you and run ahead to catch it.’ That’s been the experience. You believe in something, you have an idea. You take the right steps. You talk to all the right people. You do all these tests. But then to see it actually up is . . . thrilling.

Thrilling, indeed. Down river, the yellow lights of West Point gleamed against the dusk, and up river, the lights of Newburgh did the same. But when the first bulb of Constellation, attached to the tallest of the poles, turned on, its light appeared genuinely celestial. The LEDs McGill opted for are directional, so they tend to twinkle, getting brighter when you’re directly in front of them, and flickering lower when you’re not. One by one, the rest of the bulbs ignited, until they were all dancing in concert, like a perfect microcosm of the cosmos.

Practically on cue, a couple of actual stars appeared higher in the mostly cloudy sky, mirroring the woman-made version below, the last in a series of friendly helpers who have blessed McGill’s project. They seemed to be there just to say: See, she kind of got it right.

Taylor Swift Brings Overalls Back with Polish

Taylor Swift

After last spring’s overall craze— remember Blake Lively, Cara Delevingne, and Katie Holmes—the farmer staple is back, albeit with a few clever twists. Leave it to none other than country and pop star Taylor Swift to put her polished touch on the look yesterday on the street in New York City.

Swift’s citified wardrobe tends toward a smattering of rompers, crop tops and skirts, and mini frocks, usually paired with feminine stilettos. But when she stepped out earlier today in surprisingly sleek overalls, she hit a new sartorial high note. Her ribbed tee made for a throwback moment—think Cher Horowitz from Clueless, transplanted to Manhattan. And the cropped length of her coveralls was the true star of her look, with mod Topshop boots, tortoiseshell frames from Westward Leaning, and a shoulder satchel from Gucci to complete the retro-yet-sophisticated feel.

Women in Business Spotlight: Kathryn Johann Brings Mermaids to Life

“It’s been a passion of mine to help women feel as good as possible so they can enjoy their time at the beach.” – Kathryn Johann

Buying a bathing suit is scary. Even the most confident, empowered, ball-busting corporate executive will admit it, if only to herself. It’s scary. Because unlike lingerie, which only you and possibly a significant other will ever intimately know, or a power suit that intimidates and defines, wearing a swimsuit in public is the equivalent of letting your intimacy hang out there for all the world to see in all its vulnerable glory, and to hold your head up and fake the confidence you may not necessarily feel while you try to relax at the pool or on the beach. And though, yeah, intellectually you know nobody’s really watching you or judging you or your body by what you wear, psychologically it feels like you’re frozen in a huge spotlight, especially if the bathing suit on your body is just wrong, wrong, wrong, and you’re uncomfortable in addition to being self-conscious. At least this is how it is for me.

And apparently, it’s exactly what happened to Kathryn Johann too. As an un-waifish, normal, average-sized beautiful woman, she was constantly searching for a bathing suit she just felt comfortable in, as well as attractive, and especially sexy. A bathing suit with high quality “stronger, thicker fabric” that, as she puts it, “does miracles with sucking in any flaws.” A bathing suit that had proven elusive so many times, she decided to solve this problem for herself, and she hoped for other women who were facing similar obstacles, by creating the Morada Blue swimwear line.

Islamorada, Florida, where her family keeps their vacation home, was the inspiration for the Morada Blue swimwear name, and like so many small businesses dreamed up from scratch, it started really small. Beginning with trunk shows at friends houses, and through word-of-mouth, it quickly grew into runway shows and bikini parties, eventually making its debut in swim shops in Michigan, California and Florida. It also flourishes as an online apparel store as well at moradablue.com. She plans to open her own full-scale beachwear shop within a few years.

Drawing from her formal education in art and design at Lafayette College and her studies abroad in Florence, Italy, Kathryn focuses on classic styles and slim lines with flattering accents ranging from contemporary shapes to fluttery romance for just the right touch of flair and individuality. She takes this further by selling all her suits as separates and adding cups and underwire for extra support and comfort. Her latest brainchild for this upcoming swimsuit season is her Swim Like a Mermaid campaign, where she will be doing underwater photo shoots with models that embody the spirit and joy of mermaids of the sea.

Building on the momentum the last year has brought to her business, Kathryn tells us, “I will be hosting model search events in Florida, doing runway shows and photo shoots and will be participating in a Maxim Magazine event in Miami during Swim Week [in July].” As an independent, empowered and driven woman she admits she “knew that eventually I wanted to be my own boss and start a company that I would be proud of.” Working hard and enjoying what she does with gratitude for the opportunites she’s had along the way, she doesn’t worry about or “feel stress of the competition,” seeing the work as its own reward and hoping to make even a small contribution to helping women “feel and look as good as possible.”

President Barack Obama knew he might need some help to get his points across at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, so he brought in his anger translator Luther to make his message more clear.

Luther, whom fans might recognize as Keegan-Michael Key from the Comedy Central series “Key & Peele,” helped Obama speak on climate change and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.

MisterWives Brings Their Tour Home

Last night, I spent some time at Bowery Ballroom and caught MisterWives‘ Our Own House Tour. The tour, which kicked off this past February, finally made it to the band’s hometown of New York City. NYC did not disappoint in welcoming them home, selling out the venue in 30 minutes. Their second, upcoming show in New York–at Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 7th–is also sold out.

Opening for MisterWives was Handsome Ghost, followed by Børns. I spent a little time with Handsome Ghost’s Tim Noyes, who told me just how happy he was to be on tour with “such good people.” The Boston musician, along with Eddie Byun on synths, warmed up the early concertgoers nicely with songs from his EP, Steps.

The performance also included a well-received cover of “Sex” by The 1975.

Following Handsome Ghost was Børns. The band took to the stage–Kendrick Lamar’s “Money Trees” playing in the background–and primed the pump for the energy that was to follow. Garret Borns and his band played songs from their EP, Candy, the most popular of which is “Electric Love”. If the entire show could be viewed as a roller coaster ride, Handsome Ghost was the upward climb, and Børns was the moment just before the drop.

So what was the drop? MisterWives, of course. The New York City-based band packed Bowery Ballroom with fans, friends, and family–only a few city blocks from many of the venues they played when they got their start. Starting the show with the title track from Our Own House, they kept fans jumping, clapping, and singing along for their entire set.

I got my first exposure to MisterWives last year in Philadelphia, when they performed at Made In America Festival. Their energy was apparent then, but it has only exploded in the time between their EP , Reflections, and now. Mandy Lee’s stage presence, the playful camaraderie of all the bandmates, and a rotation of instruments that included a trumpet, accordion, and glockenspiel, kept everyone enamored from start to finish. The band closed with their song, “Queens” (a nod to the home Borough of two of the band’s members), only to return and crank out a rendition of Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk”. That, in turn, transitioned into “Kings and Queens” from their EP.

A major thanks Handsome Ghost, Børns, and MisterWives for a fantastic night, and to the amazing fans who made the experience even better.
