Carrie’s unique gift allows her to build relationships with the mansion’s ghostly occupants, especially Maj. Tom Gentry, the handsome Civil War soldier who died 100 years before Carrie was born. Isaia Opens San Francisco Store in Frank Lloyd Wright Building

Italian luxury men’s wear brand Isaia has opened a boutique in San Francisco, its third Stateside, located in the historic Frank Lloyd Wright building at 140 Maiden Lane that was one of the original blueprints for the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Formerly home to the V.C. Morris Gift Shop, the store boasts 7,900 square feet of space, with 4,000 square feet dedicated to retail sales, incorporating a bevy of unique design elements.
“It is all about the space,” said Gianluca Isaia, chief executive officer and third generation of the family-run company. “We kept the integrity of every design feature intact. As an update to the store’s existing beauty, we focused on adding a color-sensitive lighting schematic, sound system and the styling of our product to complete the experience. It was much like restoring a masterful piece of art to its glory and giving it a new personality.”
Taking over a landmarked building was no small task, because none of the original materials could be touched or modified, including the original wall plaster, millwork, trim, flooring railings, bubbled ceilings and, of course, the brick and stone façade. Planning required the interior of the space to be painted the exact color that Wright

Empire State Building Pays Tribute To Endangered Animals, Remembers Cecil The Lion

Cecil the lion, a majestic black-maned beast who once roamed the woodlands of Zimbabwe’s Hwange, was found dead last month on the outskirts of the national park. He had been killed by an American dentist for tens of thousands of dollars, then skinned and beheaded for a hunting trophy.

Cecil’s death has sparked outrage worldwide, as people everywhere lament the damage that humans continue to inflict on the populations of not just lions, but the planet’s many endangered creatures. On Saturday night, the Empire State Building served as a timely, sky-high reminder of this devastating impact, as images and video of threatened animals were projected onto the façade of the iconic New York City skyscraper.

Cecil was one of the animals featured.

For three hours, “insects, sea creatures, mammals, and birds crawled, swam, and flew over” the Empire State Building “as spectators ‘oohed’ and ‘awed,’” said The Verge. Snow leopards, tigers, lemurs, and manta rays were among the creatures on display.

The spectacle, achieved with the help of 40 projectors, was organized by the Oceanic Preservation Society and the filmmakers of “Racing Extinction,” an upcoming documentary about humans’ impact on threatened species.

“I’m hoping with this film and this event, we can raise awareness and start a movement,” the film’s director Louie Psihoyos (of “The Cove” fame) told The Verge.

NBC New York says the projections were a first for the Empire State Building, which is typically lit up with colors or, on occasion, light shows.

In total, 160 species were featured on the skyscraper. The New York Times says the production cost $ 1 million.

The Building Blocks of Erotic Intimacy

Sex addiction is a coping mechanism, much like compulsive eating, gambling or drinking, that works to either augment the addict’s pleasure or numb his or her pain. It’s a defense against overwhelming feelings that the addict cannot regulate, feelings that have their roots in childhood, when primary caregivers proved unreliable at best, and abusive at worst. Having failed to attach in a healthy way within these initial relationships, the addict now struggles to form bonds with others, either due to fear of abandonment, fear of enmeshment or fear of harm. The result of these fears, regardless of their particular flavor, is a phobia of intimacy that pervades the sex addict’s life. In response, he or she turns to relationship substitutes that also function as brain chemistry-altering drugs — porn, affairs, prostitutes, promiscuity. Thus sex addiction is a complex and highly sophisticated “solution” to the addict’s emotional problems. It is not dismantled easily.

What’s needed is an understanding of the building blocks of intimacy, which when worked on individually and as a whole, will gradually allow the addict to learn a new style of relating to others. The goal is for the addict is to learn to securely attach to healthy partners and experience the joy of intimacy, which once tasted, can be so powerful it incinerates all illusions that sexual acting out can ever fulfill the deep inner longing for connection that all humans have in common.

One of the most important building blocks is transparency. This means allowing ourselves to be seen and known authentically, no matter the consequences. To a sex addict, this can be horrifying. The shame involved in coming clean about the addiction is enough to send the addict right back to the sex club. But transparency is not just about disclosing secrets or divulging details to a partner. It’s about letting other people know when we’re hurting; lettings others in on our humor; sharing our talents; and even just being “boring” when we’re tired or need down time. Transparency is like the clean oxygen needed for relationships to breathe, and it begins in the safety of a therapeutic setting where addicts can risk being themselves, perhaps for the first time ever.

Another major building block of intimacy is vulnerability. Through years of acting out, the sex addict has built of a brick wall of “toughness,” an emotional invincibility that is evidenced in the callous objectifying of others and the ability to stay emotionally detached from partners. Learning to accept that we can be hurt, that we most likely will be hurt from time and time, and that we can be hurt and still be okay is the key to moving towards healthy bonds. To even acknowledge how deeply we can be wounded by a cold look, an unreturned email or a rejected invitation can be daunting, but once viewed in the context of our shared humanity, it becomes easier for the addict to understand how normal their responses are, and to cope with the disappointment in ways that are loving and respectful towards oneself, rather than destructive.

There are many more building blocks and cornerstones of intimacy, and each one is like a key that can open the door to freedom for the sex addict. Throughout the journey, it is essential to having a kind and supportive guide in the form of a therapist or counselor, for this work can unearth traumas too great to be handled on one’s own. Support groups are also invaluable during this stage of recovery, where addicts can share their progress and ultimately begin to grasp that they are not alone.

My Husband And I Live In The Same Building As My Ex. Here’s What It’s Like

As part of our Blended Family Friday series, each week we spotlight a different stepfamily to learn how they’ve worked to bring their two families together. Our hope is that by telling their stories, we’ll bring you closer to blended family bliss in your own life!

Christine Amour-Levar is used to people giving her the side-eye when she tells them about her living arrangement. The mom of four is remarried but lives in the same apartment building as her ex-husband.

“Most people look at our setup and think, ‘How bizarre. Why would anyone want to live this way, in such close proximity to an ex-husband or ex-wife?'” Amour-Levar told The Huffington Post.

“The answer is simple: It takes a village to raise a child,” she said. “There is much wisdom in this old proverb and it’s something we as parents have taken to heart in these formative years of our children’s upbringing.”

Below, Amour-Levar tells us more about her unique blended family.

Hi Christine! Want to introduce us to your family?
We are a family of six living in Singapore: There’s my husband Steve, me and our four children: Yasmine (12) and Malcolm (10) from my first marriage and Louis (5) and Angeline (3) from my marriage to Steve.

All four children live in our home while my ex-husband, Mike, still lives a few floors above us. The older children consider their father’s flat almost an extension of our home and zoom up the elevator several times a day to see him when he’s in town. (He travels often for work.) When it’s his weekend, there aren’t many changes to our kids’ daily schedules. My two younger children often accompany the older two to visit their “uncle” upstairs. They feel equally at home there and occasionally they all have dinner together. In their eyes, he is an important member of our family.

How does Steve feel about your ex-husband living so close?
It’s funny because when we met six years ago, Steve was 34, single, never married and just out on the town for a good time. On our first meeting, little did he know that I had a 6-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son waiting for me at home– and an ex-husband living in a different flat in the same building! I just had to explain the situation to him: When we split up after 10 years of marriage, my ex and I consulted a child psychologist who suggested living in such close proximity to each other would be the least traumatic situation for the kids — so that’s what we did.

Luckily, both men have been able to put egos aside for the love, happiness and well-being of the children. That’s what’s at the heart of our family’s genuine partnership. It’s not uncommon to see my husband and ex-husband chatting by the pool while the children happily paddle and splash about. It’s a scene that a few of our neighbors had to adjust to at first!

How do you make such a unique living arrangement work? There must be challenges.
We live close but we are very conscious of maintaining each other’s privacy. Respect is a huge part of it. When my husband, ex-husband and I interact or speak about each other in front of anyone — especially the kids — we do so with the utmost respect and consideration. The children feel this and take their cues from it. One day my son Malcolm even said, “When I grow up and become a famous professional football player, I will buy a big house where all of us can live together!” And by “all of us,” he said he meant his father, his stepdad, his mother, brother, sisters and all the grandparents, including step-grandparents and nannies!

What would you say are some of the biggest challenges of stepfamily life in general?
In our case, I am the mother of all four children but there are two very involved fathers in the picture. Juggling the various relationships is sometimes a little challenging. My ex-husband and I parent our older children very closely and consult each other often on important decisions but my husband is also very committed to helping us raise them. Steve is keenly aware and respectful of my ex-husband’s opinions as it relates to the two older kids, but he also has a point of view regarding how they should grow up and behave. It can be challenging!

What advice do you have for parents who are struggling to keep the peace with their exes?
I know it’s not always easy. It requires a certain type of individual who can look beyond the petty differences of opinions, the bruised egos and the emotional uncertainty that comes with any divorce. Ultimately, it’s about putting the children first and your feelings a distant second. Just remember: It’s the children’s fragile feelings that need to be placed at the center of the situation, not what you’re feeling personally.

Building a Better Blonde: 9 Breakout Products to Supercharge Any Shade

Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift vogue cover

The heat might be getting to us, but the sudden onset of summery weather has us dreaming of going blonde. Perhaps you’re yearning for the tawny, caramel street style shade known simply as “bronde”—darker than average, with a focus on depth rather than brightness—or the equally brilliant options of Nordic, beige, baby, dirty, golden, and platinum. No matter the shade, the only caveat for a sunnier color has been its required upkeep, which is a reality that Victoria Hunter, editorial colorist and co-owner of New York City’s Whittemore House Salon, attributes to strands made porous over time. Fortunately, a new generation of shampoos, conditioners, masks, and serums, is out to remove the high-maintenance connotation associated with a flaxen dye job—targeting specific tones to make maintaining your ideal tint easier to achieve.

To preserve a pitch-perfect tone even after a day at the beach, Redken’s Blonde Idol Custom-Tone Gold Conditioner allows medium blondes to maintain warmth by depositing bespoke color calibrations between salon services, while supplying hair with much-needed moisture. But, according to Hunter, those after icier shades should feel free to harness the power of the sun. “It really does help to brighten things, but we recommend a touch of Je Veux Argan Oil to maintain hydration,” she says. Christophe Robin’s Shade Variation Care mask for baby blondes uses temporary tone-cooling agents (and a bit of well-applied color theory) by way of violet pigments that eliminate brassiness, while conditioning with soothing almond butter and Buriti oil. Purple shampoos work similarly to “neutralize yellow,” but should be used sparingly, says the colorist.

Hunter’s universal tip for blondes of all breeds is to invest in a water filter for your shower, which better protects sponge-like hair from soaking up the dulling effects of metal and chlorine. As for the contents of your bathtub’s shelves, here’s a look at nine customized products tailored to every kind of blonde.

Building the Perfect Hair Arsenal: From the Best Blow-Dryer to the Ultimate Shampoo

Photographed by Irving Penn, Vogue, October 1997

At the end of fashion month, we find ourselves reminiscing about the variety of  hairstyles used to bring our favorite runway looks to life. While we try to decide which waves, ponytails, or chignons to attempt—the futuristic updos from Balenciaga and Prada are at the top of our list—a hair arsenal overhaul seems like a good preparatory step. To aid us in this task, we enlisted editorial pro Teddi Cranford. As the owner of the White Rose Collective, which provides brides and partygoers with access to the best hairstylists and makeup artists in the industry, and the go-to red-carpet stylist for clients like Jemima Kirke and Pamela Love, Cranford has spent years wielding brushes, sprays, and blow-dryers, helping her shape the ultimate edit of tools and styling products to keep at the ready.

For starters, when washing her clients’ hair, Cranford prefers the “transformative effects” of Oribe Signature Shampoo and Conditioner—“they seriously make such a difference”—before erasing frizz (and providing an extra-soft finish) with the brand’s Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil, a product that works both pre–blow dry and air dry. For those between-wash days, Cranford reaches for Sachajuan Volume Powder. “It has zero buildup but provides texture when hair is greasy, or if you want to pump up your look a bit.”

She’d also never leave the house for a job without her favorite two brushes, the first being a YS Park Round Brush. “Round brushing your own hair is tricky, even if you do it every day, and YS brushes are so easy to navigate,” she says, adding that they impart a silky texture and easy movement to the hair. For straight blowouts or basic knot maintenance, on the other hand, a Mason Pearson hairbrush is unmatched, because “the mixed bristles detangle without breaking or tearing the hair.”

As for the blow-dryer itself, BaByliss Nano Titanium Portofino does the trick, but Cranford notes that whatever the model, a concentrator nozzle is paramount for control of the overall style. She suggests a misting of Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray pre–blow dry, “to give hold and amplify the look without leaving hair heavy.” Loose waves and textural curls can be manufactured with a one-inch ceramic iron from Hot Tools, and just about every style can be set with L’Oréal’s cult classic Elnett spray. Here, a look at the hair products every woman should have at home.

Military Almost Done Building Flying Dragons

Did you hear that the U.S. military is developing flying dragons that shoot laser beams from their eyes? They don’t say that directly, but you can see the parts coming together.

A drone is about halfway to being a flying dragon already. And recently the military tested a laser weapon that destroyed a truck at a distance. It is only a matter of time before the military miniaturizes laser weapons and puts them on drones.

I think the first generation of laser drones will look boring, like today. But eventually someone will say, “Let’s make the drones look like flying dragons that shoot laser beams out of their eyes!” Someone else will point out that a flying dragon will not be as aerodynamic as a normal drone. But that is a small price to pay for the coolness of it all. Just think of the bragging rights.

North Korea: “We have developed long range missiles with nuclear warheads. Death to the Americans!”

U.S.: “We have ten-thousand flying dragons that feel no pain and shoot lasers from their eyes. They are permanently circling your country looking for anything that leaves the ground. On the plus side, just point to your hibachi and we’ll light it for you from the sky. Oh, and our satellites are seeing an irregular mole on your back. You should see someone about that.”

In the long run, I expect we will develop a robot army, including drones, to create a virtual fence around ISIS-held territory. The robots would kill anything with a heat signature that came within a mile of the border. And the drones might be able to jam all communications in the area too. I would be amazed if the military is not working toward that containment strategy. The dragon part is a bit less likely.

But as someone said in the comments, waiting for ISIS to self-destruct is a good option too. As the movement succeeds, it attracts people who have slightly different views until the whole thing becomes like the American Congress that can’t get anything done. Good luck with that, ISIS.

——————

My post today was boring, but luckily my blogging partners did better.

Vivian Giang explains why men are better than women when it comes to the workplace. (Expect a twist.) I buy every part of her post, as it is based on studies and the obvious. But in an upcoming post I plan to have a link war to figure out how everything Vivian describes can be true at the same time other studies show no pay differential after you adjust for experience. I believe both assertions even though they are in direct conflict. What is up with that?

In other news, a company created a frickin’ car with 3D printers. What????

And a Berkeley-related start-up has an app that could alleviate a lot of poverty. How do you ignore that?
