For a Ghost-Free Time, Call – Sean Kelly

For a Ghost-Free Time, Call

Sean Kelly

Genre: Paranormal

Publish Date: July 31, 2016

Publisher: Emerald Inkwell, LLC

Seller: Smashwords, Inc.

For a Ghost-Free Time, Call is an episodic supernatural adventure set in the emerald city of Eugene, Oregon which follows a young man, who–since he was a boy–has had the irritating ability to see ghosts all around him. In spite of this so-called “gift,” he found a way to cope and a few less than legitimate ways to make a little money on the side. But a con that started out as a way to make a quick buck will soon become a terrifying reality check about the world he thought he understood… “Eugene is teeming with ghosts and for some stupid, God damn reason, I’m the only one who can see them.” At the young age of nine, Jared developed the unnatural ability to see the lingering spirits of the dead, and beyond its initial novelty, all it’s ever done is piss him off. After having to grow up rather quickly on his own, Jared took something that would have easily driven most people insane and found a way to use his unwelcomed gift to his advantage. He studied and took notes from the most prevalent movies and television shows, and armed with every mainstream supernatural trope and cliché he could find, started his very own—more or less legitimate—ghost removal service. With years of hit-or-miss cons and a number of temporary solutions to combat the most crippling aspects of his “gift,” Jared finally found a way to live a “normal” life and a way to fit in with society. However, one day, while working a routine job for a rich mark, Jared will be confronted with his own lies and a glimpse of the truth behind the world around him and his abilities. For a Ghost-Free Time, Call is a supernatural thriller written by up and coming Pacific Northwest author Sean Kelly (author of "The Drive Home: A Tale of Bromance and Horror" and co-founder of Emerald Inkwell, A Pacific Northwest Publishing Community) and is the first story in an episodic series brought to you by Emerald Inkwell. Episode one is a FREE and complete short story setting the stage for an otherworldly series taking place all across Eugene, Oregon. Every city has their supernatural annoyances, but that doesn't mean you have to put up with them. Instead, for a ghost free time, just call.

Beef Update: J. Prince Made Drake Call Off Pusha T Response

Super Bowl LI Parties

Source: Prince Williams / Getty

J Prince is a certified triple OG and that was made evident over the weekend as it relates to the apparently now-defunct Pusha T and Drake beef. The Rap-A-Lot Records founder put in a call to Drizzy and told him not to respond further to his Virginia rival.

With rumors on the Internet that Drake had a reply in the can for “The Story Of Adidon,” a blistering track where Push alleged Drake fathered a child with former soft-core porn actress Sophie Brussaux, Prince has seen enough. The Houston native spoke with DTLR Radio personalities DJ Reddz and Fadam Got Da Juice, saying in the interview that things have gone too far

Citing that what Pusha engaged in with the track was “pig men mentality” by going after Drake’s parents and his ailing producer Noah “40” Shehib, Prince said that for Drake to respond would be giving in to the lowest part of himself and suggested he move on.

While few would question the directions and motives of J Prince considering his many power moves in both business and the streets, some might wonder if Drake lost this war of words due to the damaging attack of Pusha T. For now, all eyes are tuned towards Drake’s upcoming Scorpion album and a summer tour but now with this beef and its abrupt end hanging over his head.

Some big names from the NBA, NFL, and MLS were on hand to witness the reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and be the first to get hands-on with the game.

Thursday, May 17th, Activision developer Treyarch held a community reveal event for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 — the next chapter in the popular first-person shooter franchise. The event was held at the Jet Center Los Angeles in Hawthorne California.

On hand to witness the next step in the blockbuster franchise were hundreds of media, community members and celebrity Call of Duty players. Notable pro-athletes from across the sports world who love the game were in the building were L.A. Clippers all-star center DeAndre Jordan, Sacramento Kings young star De’Aron Fox, L.A. Rams star running back Todd Gurley, Minnesota Timberwolves all-star center Karl-Anthony Townes, Pittsburgh Steeler wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and L.A. Galaxy left-back Ashley Cole.

L.A.’s top athletes even battled for hometown bragging rights in a “Battle For LA” game match as fans watched and cheered on.

In case you didn’t know, Black Ops 4 is ditching it’s single-player campaign and put all of its focus on the multiplayer aspect of the game. Along with tweaked gameplay and features, there is also a new Battle Royale mode called Blackout that has COD players excited that hopes to rival Fortnite and PUBG.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 arrives October 12th, and is available for pre-order now. For more photos from the night hit the flip.

‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’ Revealed, New Battle Royale Mode To Rival ‘Fortnite’ & ‘PUBG’

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Reveal

Source: Treyarch/Activision / Treyarch/Activision

Today (May 17), Treyarch unveiled what they are calling the most in-depth and most engaging Call of Duty experience ever with Black Ops 4.

Rumors have been swirling for months about the latest chapter in the most played series in the Call of Duty franchise, the biggest one being there would be no single-player campaign. Based on the reveal trailer that shows off a revamped multiplayer mode, that indeed seems to be the case.

Instead, Call of Duty’s 200 million plus players on October 12th will be treated to a multiplayer experience that Treyarch promises that will raise the bar. Along with a gritty, grounded and all-out combat experience, Black Ops 4 multiplayer will focus on tactical and player choice.

Treyarch is also looking to take on Fortnite and PUBG (Players Unknown Battleground) with a new one-of-a-kind game mode uniquely exclusive to Black Ops called Blackout. This massive battle royale will include iconic characters and locations from all four Black Ops games and will the feature the biggest map ever built in Call of Duty history. Players will have the option to either team-up or battle solo to engage in the most diverse combat ever that will allow combatants to utilize land, sea and air vehicles.

It wouldn’t be a Call of Duty game if there weren’t a Zombie Mode. Black Ops 4 is promising to deliver the most substantial Zombies Mode ever. On day one, fans will be treated to three fully-featured IXVoyage of Despair and Blood of the Dead in celebration of the fan-favorite mode’s 10-year-anniversary.

Black Ops 4 Zombies will feature more in-depth gameplay, tons of easter eggs and a new feature called Zombie Rush that will streamline gameplay and introduce new challenges to seasoned veterans.

Treyarch also announced it will be co-developing with Beenox while working closely with Blizzard to optimized Black Ops 4 for Battlenet for PC gamers. Black Ops 4 marks the largest development team ever assembled for a Call of Duty title on PC. Here is what players can expect:

“Black Ops 4 on PC will have uncapped framerate, 4K resolution and HDR support for ultra-wide monitors and the ability for players to extensively customize the performance and visual quality for their specific hardware. In addition, players will be able to select from pre-set control options, including options for left-handed players, or fully customize the keyboard and mouse controls to their preference. In addition, Treyarch and Beenox worked closely with the team at Blizzard to incorporate Battle.net’s social systems, security, and server stability into Black Ops 4, to prepare for the release on Battle.net on October 12.”

Black Ops 4 sounds like it’s going to be the biggest title in the franchise ever. This is a massive endeavor for the company, but it’s clear Treyarch is fully confident they have a game that can be even more popular than Fortnite and PUBG.  They have the fans to help pull this off. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is available for pre-order, and as a bonus, you gain access to the upcoming beta for being pro-active.  Checkout the games intense multiplayer reveal trailer below.

Is it just us or does The Weeknd strike you as the type of singer who likes to wallow in sadness in his visuals?

In his somber clip to “Call Out My Name” the Canadian crooner continues that trend by walking down a lonely road after sunset like he just lost his best-friend. Not even an iPod though?

Yo Gotti meanwhile makes the most of the road and rolls in a all-white Lambo like it ain’t no thing in his Chris Brown assisted clip to “Save It For Me.”

Three star-crossed lovers exchange opinions in a beachfront hotel room while being serenaded by the slurred, yakking whistles of a Plover bird who is also seeking Love and Romance. Mr. Dawes’ play is presented as “un spectacle dans un fauteuil” (a show in an armchair), an early 19th century invention of the French dramatist Alfred de Musset (1810-1857). Monsieur de Musset created this form as a theater experience to be read, thus avoiding the constraints of staging a production in an actual playhouse. Here, in the 21st century, using the tools of our age, the reading of the play is performed by the actors so the viewer may comfortably  rest in their favorite fauteuil.

Wake Up Call

An elderly gentleman checked into a New York hotel. The clerk mentioned the phone service the establishment made available for calling guests who
wished to rise at an early hour.

“No need for that, young man,” snapped the old timer. “I always wake up at five am sharp without an alarm clock.”

“Very good, sir,” the clerk replied, then asked, “Would you mind calling me at six?”

Seductive Wake Up Call Threesome

Jake and I recently had the pleasure of spending some quality time with our good friends Ashley and Brian. As most of you know this hot couple joined my site over a year ago and we really hit it off via e-mail and the members only cam chat. Since then weve hooked-up on several occasions for some incredibly hot fuck sessions. A few weeks ago the four us checked into a hotel and proceeded to spend an entire weekend fucking.

Yes, I mean literally the entire weekend! Ok, so maybe we did leave the hotel a couple of times to eat but most of the weekend was spent in bed. One morning we had plans to go out for breakfast but wed already been up most of the previous night fucking so when our alarm didnt go off Jake and I slept right through the planned meeting time.

Since we had exchanged room keys they went ahead and let themselves into our room. When Ashley saw we were still sleeping she decided to wake Jake up with a blowjob. I imagine any guy would prefer to be awakened by the sensation of a pair of hot wet lips wrapped around his cock than the ringing of a phone. When I woke up and saw her sucking him off I decided to get in on the action. The next thing I knew the three of us had spent nearly an hour fucking and sucking while Brian videotaped the whole thing!

Oh yeah, eventually we did make it to breakfast. And then of course back to the room to continue our weekend tryst!

For a Ghost-Free Time, Call: Episode One

Sean Kelly

Genre: Paranormal

Publish Date: July 31, 2016

Publisher: Emerald Inkwell

Seller: Smashwords

Hear 911 Call Of ‘Too High’ Guy Found Surrounded By Doritos

By now the nation is aware of the poor 22-year-old from Austintown, Ohio, who called 911 earlier this month to say he was “too high” and was later found by police surrounded by Doritos and cookies.

Now, his dankest hour has been made public.

In a 911 call obtained by WJW on Wednesday, the sad sap explains that he “can’t feel anything.”

A dispatcher asks, “OK, what’d you take?”

“Weed.”

The caller sounds upset, and the dispatcher’s tone changes from serious to comforting.

“OK,” the dispatcher says, “we’ll send an EMS right over to check you out, OK?”

“OK. Thank you,” the caller replies.

It turns out he was indeed OK. He refused medical attention, and gave responding officers the keys to his car so they could find his stash. Inside, they found a jar of marijuana, two joints and paraphernalia. Because he’s in Ohio, the caller now faces possession charges.

HuffPost Canada reported:

People who have smoked marijuana report an increased appetite because of brain stimulation from THC, one of the drug’s ingredients, Smithsonian.com reports.

The substance triggers the brain’s endocannabinoid system, which is connected to memory, emotions and appetite.

In this case, it seems it was a little too stimulated for the user’s own good.

Urban Outfitters’ Call For Free Labor Is Just Its Latest Shameful Move

No, Urban Outfitters. Just no.

The retailer’s parent company, URBN, which also oversees Anthropologie and Free People, asked some of its salaried employees to volunteer at a fulfillment center in Pennsylvania in anticipation of a busy month, Gawker reported earlier this week. What this means is that employees at the URBN home office were being asked to work for free in order to help make sure customers got their orders speedily.

Reached for comment from The Huffington Post, the company said that employees were enthusiastic about the request:

[W]e received a tremendous response, including many of our senior management. Many hourly employees also offered to pitch in — an offer which we appreciated, but declined in order to ensure full compliance with all applicable labor laws and regulations. The dedication and commitment of URBN employees are second to none, and their response to this request is a testament to their solidarity and continued success.

Urban had been making some progress on labor practices. The retailer announced Wednesday that it would end on-call scheduling in its New York stores. But clearly it still has work to do.

The the chain doesn’t have the cleanest record when it comes to cultural or political sensitivity, either. Here’s a reminder of some other controversies Urban Outfitters has stirred in years past:

Supporting anti-gay agendas

CEO and founder Richard Hayne has donated $ 14,000 over the years to presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, who has been vocal in his opposition to gay marriage. In 2008, Urban Outfitters quickly discontinued a T-shirt that had the slogan “I support same-sex marriage.”

Appropriating Native American culture

After releasing Navajo-themed clothes and accessories in 2011, Urban Outfitters was slapped by a lawsuit from the Navajo Nation for using its name on products.

Commercializing the death of students

Someone at the the company actually thought it was a good idea to make sweatshirts emblazoned with “Kent State” along with some bloody-looking stains. Four students were killed and many others wounded in a shooting at that Ohio university in 1970. The retailer received immediate backlash and pulled the item from its site, claiming the stains were the result of discoloration and “natural wear and fray.”

Ripping off artists

Urban Outfitters has a long history of stealing other people’s designs. It’s lifted freely from jewelry sellers on Etsy and artists who are trying to sell their work online.

Wake-Up Call For Mom Who Says She Doesn’t Want To Be A Mom Anymore

Heather, a mom of four, lost her mother and oldest daughter within months of each other. She has been so devastated that she admits she has “checked out” from her remaining three daughters and lost her purpose in life.

In the video above, Dr. Phil looks at what she has told herself or others:

“I should just give up.”
“I don’t want to be a mom.”
“I’m failing my family.”
“I’m completely broken.”
“No point in taking care of myself.”

Dr. Phil asks, “If that’s what you’re saying to yourself over, and over and over again, what possible outcome could you have?” Pointing out how powerful her internal dialogue is, Dr. Phil explains, “We don’t react to what happens in life; we react to what we say to ourselves about what happens in life … Grief is not a disease. You are not broken. You don’t have the right to curl up in a ball and sit on the sidelines. You have a responsibility to put one foot in front of the other and behave and think your way through this.”

How can Heather overcome her pain and move forward with purpose — for her own sake and for her daughters? Watch more as Dr. Phil gives her the tools on Wednesday’s episode, “A Mother of Four Who Says: ‘I Don’t Want to Be a Mom Anymore.’”

Bernie Sanders Explains Why He’s Not Insulted When People Call Him A Socialist

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders explained on Friday why he’s not insulted when people call him a socialist.

Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, laughed when he was asked by “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert why he wouldn’t take the words “liberal” and “socialist” to be insults.

“I prefer the term, actually, to be a progressive and I’ll tell you why,” he said. Using Denmark as an example, Sanders said that social-democratic countries had better health care, child care and higher education systems than those in the United States.

“What you have is a society where government — as I believe it should in this country, radical idea though it may be — should actually represent working people and the middle class rather than large campaign donors,” Sanders said.

When asked what his vision for America would look like in “concrete terms,” Sanders spoke about what he saw as a “moral outrage” in the United States.

“In concrete terms, what it means is that it is a moral outrage that the top one-tenth of 1 percent today owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90 percent,” he said. “That is the outrage and that has gotta change.”

That outrage at income inequality, Sanders said, is why he does not have a Super PAC, which would allow corporations, unions and other groups to give unlimited donations.

“I don’t have a Super PAC, I’m one of the few presidential candidates that does not, because frankly, I do not support the agenda of corporate America or the billionaire class. I don’t want their money,” he said.

Sanders has surged ahead of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire and Iowa, though polls this early in a presidential contest can be poor predictors of the eventual outcome. Asked why voters who think Clinton has a better shot of defeating a Republican should support him, Sanders made the case that he would match up better against a Republican in the general election.

“If you look at the polls of me running against Republicans, despite the fact that still in this country 20, 30, 40 percent of the people don’t know who I am or what I am fighting for, we do almost as well and in some cases better than Hillary Clinton does today, and that will only get better in the future,” he said.

Republicans win when the voter turnout is low,” Sanders continued. “I think the kinds of crowds and the excitement that we are generating with young people, with working people, will result in very large voter turnouts to get the White House, and not only get the White House, recapture the Senate and do well in the House.”

Sanders, who was first elected to Congress in 1990 and is its longest-serving independent, also rejected the suggestion that he was making a populist appeal similar to that of Republican front-runner Donald Trump.

“I think that what Trump is doing is appealing to the baser instincts among us, xenophobia and, frankly, racism,” he said. “I think that is disgraceful and not something we should be doing in this country in 2015.”

The Vermont senator, who at times has had a tense relationship with those in the Black Lives Matter movement, spoke about his vision for a more inclusive America.

“What I am talking about is a vision that goes beyond telling us that we have to hate a group of people,” he said. “What I am talking about is saying that in the wealthiest country in the history of the world, there are extraordinary things that we can do when people come together, black and white, and gay and straight, and demand that government start working for all of us and not just the few.”

Sanders, who has dismissed frivolous questions from reporters during his campaign, also played along with a lighter segment on the show where he stood in front of a camera and said whether he is for or against certain issues. Among those he weighed in on were rainy-day Mondays (he is against them) and kissing on the first date (he supports it sometimes).

Call Him ‘Lickasso’: Man Paints Beaver With World’s Longest Tongue

The man with the world’s longest tongue is doing what he was born to do: Paint a beaver with his tongue.

Nick Stoeberl, 26, currently holds the Guinness World Record for world’s longest tongue – a whopping 3.97 inches from tip to closed lip.

That honor might be enough for some people, but Stoeberl feels a giant tongue is nothing if not used for the betterment of humanity.

“It’s a gift,” he told HuffPost. “I have to use it.”

So Stoeberl has started using his licker as a paint brush, making portraits and art works by dipping his tongue in acrylic paint and then onto canvas.

Stoeberl has done numerous tongue paintings including one of talk show host Steve Harvey, but is proudest of his most recent work: A giant beaver.

“This painting definitely appeals to my taste,” he said. “I’m fascinated by beavers.”

Stoeberl, who also works as a sharp-tongued standup comedian, was inspired to become a tongue painter two years ago after seeing the work of a tongue painter in India.

“However, when I heard him talk about the nausea he experiences putting the paint in his mouth, I realized I needed to cover my tongue with Saran Wrap first,” he said.

It took Stoeberl about six hours to complete the beaver painting.

“The area surrounding the beaver was easier to lick than the beaver itself,” he said.

Stoeberl’s work with his tongue is more of a novelty than anything else, but the beaver portrait has earned him a spot in the record books.

RecordSetter.com, a website that specializes in wacky records said Stoeberl’s beaver painting, which measures 36 inches by 24 inches is the Largest Painting Of A Beaver Painted Using Tongue.

Stoeberl plans to focus his tongue and his creativity toward doing works inspired by Andy Warhol, but is also considering doing a whole series of paintings focused on his favorite animal: the beaver.

Reps For Chris Brown Call San Jose Shooting Lawsuit “Frivolous”

Chris Brown is facing a new batch of legal drama but this time around, the R&B superstar isn’t easily copping to the blame.

Publicists for the 26-year-old singer are telling Hip-Hop Wired that although the January 11 San Jose shooting was indeed unfortunate, the days of their client being unfairly targeted by lawsuits is coming to an end.

“It is a poor reflection of our society that violence is so prevalent and it is always a tragedy when someone is physically harmed. However this is a completely frivolous lawsuit,” Breezy’s reps say in a statement.

“We expect that the case will be dismissed and in future, to avoid these reoccurring meritless lawsuits directed at Chris Brown, we plan to seek damages from all parties and their lawyers.”

Paul Briley, 22, was one of five people who were shot while attending the private “Chris Brown’s Capricorn Bash” at the Fiesta Nightclub on Monterey Highway. He recently filed a lawsuit citing negligence on the singer’s part, claiming his celebrity brings violence everywhere he goes and his security could have been a lot tighter. His legal team also inexplicably threw the Rihanna incident in the melee.

Briley is asking for unspecified damages for mental anguish, time missed from work and more.

5 Beauties Who Answer to Afropunk’s Rebellious Call

afropunk beauty

Tomorrow, Fort Greene’s Commodore Barry Park will host the eleventh annual Afropunk festival, a weekend-long celebration of alternative music, art, and the nonconformists who make it. Case in point, the iconoclastic lineup of performers who are as recognized for their sonic contributions as they are for their distinctive beauty choices, capturing the insurgent spirit of punk with an asymmetrical undercut, smattering of face paint, or unexpected dye job.

In the way of danceable beats and towering curls, there is Lion Babe’s Jillian Hervey, whose exaggerated golden mane is known to spill out glitter for emphasis as she twirls onstage. Contrary to her signature breathy songs, SZA, too, finds her voice in volume, with her fluffed-up texture arriving in an idiosyncratic shade of rust.

Surely, there will be no shortage of unexpected makeup preferences, care of Oshun’s Thandiwe, who along with bandmate Niambi Sala often daubs bright geometric patterns along her forehead, cheekbones, or eyes in shades of primary whites and yellows. Adia Victoria will likely balance the androgynous charm of her micro bangs and obsidian pixie with darkened eyebrows and a chromatic swipe of lipstick. And the bewitching allure of Kelela’s waist-grazing locks is rivaled only by her kohl-rimmed eyes. This weekend, take a cue from these five Afropunk beauties and cultivate a look that’s all your own.

Comedians Paul Scheer And Rob Huebel Call Out The Fat Jew: ‘He’s Being A F*cking Dick’

Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel blame both The Fat Jew and social media for the Instagram’s sensation’s history of posting other people’s jokes and memes.

“He’s being a f*cking dick, and he’s probably a piece of crap, but it’s also on those platforms,” Huebel said of The Fat Jew HuffPost Live on Tuesday. “Like Twitter and Instagram — they make it too easy to do that.”

Scheer, who stars alongside Huebel in Vimeo’s new comedy series “Crash Test,” added that Twitter feels like “the only place right now where you can get away” with joke theft. But that’s not the only issue, according to the comedian.

“I think the issue that’s really bad about it is that [The Fat Jew] is profiting off of it,” explained Scheer. “He’s not just a thief — he’s actually making money off of people’s stuff. If he attributes it — if he’s like an aggregator — that’s fine.”

Can We Call a Trump Puppet a Trumpet?

When Donald Trump uses his persuasion skills to turn someone into a puppet, can we call that person a Trumpet? I vote yes!

Because I want America to be great again.

Anyway, yesterday I blogged about Trump’s masterful use of persuasion and I thought some of you would enjoy seeing a perfect example of a common technique. It is the sort of thing you can do at home.

Warning: Stop reading now if you do not want to take the risk of being influenced to buy a particular item. Seriously. What follows is an experiment in manipulating your opinion. If that sort of experience does not appeal to you, please stop reading.

And this warning is serious. It is not part of the experiment.

If you’re still with me, check out this screen grab of my book’s ranking on one of Amazon’s bestseller sub-groups. My book is just above Trump’s book, and I’m almost positive he is getting more publicity lately.

image

[If your firewall is blocking the image, it is just two books side-by-side.]

To be fair, this ranking lasted about five minutes and means absolutely nothing. The temporary ranking of my book in an obscure sub-group listing does not indicate its value.

But here’s the thing. My words have a LITTLE impact on your memory. But the image of my book next to Trump’s book is a visual you are likely to remember even though it has no impact on your life. In effect, my book’s image is leeching off the “value” people see in Trump, either because he is a successful business person or because he might be the next president of the United States. Even if you dislike Trump on an intellectual level, he is still associated in your mind with success, wealth and power. And I just siphoned off some of that goodwill for my book.

The way you influence people is by managing their dominant thoughts. And you can do that by associating things in people’s minds the way a dog associates obedience with treats. The brain is a natural connection-maker. It can’t turn that function off. A skilled persuader can chain together thoughts so one borrows the qualities of the other. Repetition strengthens the association.

Trump wants to “Make America Great.” All three of those words are winning words. That choice of words is no clown accident. Trump is making people associate his brand with America, greatness, and even “making” stuff, which is generally good. Every time you hear his slogan, or read it, the association is strengthened.

Compare Trump’s slogan to some dumb-ass intellectual slogan such as “I will make government smaller!” The words government and smaller are total loser words. The quality of that person’s argument will be lost on most voters. All they will know is that Trump wants to make them great while the other candidate wants to make something smaller.

My main point is that intellectual arguments lose to visual arguments and to powerful associations such as “America” and “great.” You think Trump is spouting calorie-free non-policies because he’s an idiot who hasn’t done his homework. The reality (as far as I can tell) is that he’s playing three-dimensional chess with two-dimensional opponents.

Here I’ll remind you that I don’t support any of the candidates at this point. My main interest in Trump is his persuasion skills.

Scott

Note: I am not including a link to my book because it wouldn’t seem sporting in this context.

Don’t Call It a Rom-Com: Rob Delaney on Catastrophe, the Best New Show on TV

Photo: Courtesy of Amazon Studios

Rob Delaney’s rise to Twitter stardom has been well documented: He joined in 2009, turning the social media platform into an outlet for his wild, foul, satirical jokes, and quickly started to amass followers, both on the Internet and in the comedy world. In 2012, he won Comedy Central’s first and only Funniest Person on Twitter Award. So it’s only fitting that his newest project, a British sitcom called Catastrophe, also began with a tweet.

Like the rest of us, Sharon Horgan, “the Tina Fey of British TV,” first followed Delaney on Twitter, sometime in 2010. Delaney, a fan of the Irish comedian’s work, then sent her a direct message. The two met up and became fast friends. “I never would have dared to hope that we would make a sitcom together,” Delaney says by phone.

But the pair got a deal to develop a six-episode show together, and this January, Catastrophe aired on Britain’s Channel 4. Delaney plays “Rob,” a Boston-based ad man who, while on a business trip in London, meets Sharon (Horgan) at a bar. What starts off as modern rom-com cliché becomes immediately disarmed during introductions. While trying to buy Sharon a margarita, Rob reveals that he stopped drinking after an embarrassing incident: “I quit a few years ago after I shit my pants at my sister’s wedding.” (The fictitious Rob and the real-life Delaney share many things, among them a love of scatological jokes and abstinence from alcohol; Delaney stopped drinking in 2002 after a drunk-driving accident.) His off-color pickup line does the trick, and Rob’s and Sharon’s one-night stand turns into a weeklong fling, and an unexpected pregnancy.

Catastrophe, which became available on Amazon in June, offers up a lot of the usual rom-com fare, but with a whip-smart current of realism, alternatingly horrific and hilarious. It’s credited with breathing new life into a stale genre, yet another thing Delaney said he and Horgan had no intentions of doing. “I swear to God, we didn’t even realize that it was a romantic comedy until we were done with it,” Delaney said. “We thought it was a comedy. And it had some romance in it.” Here, more from Delaney on his new show, what we can expect from season two, and why calling Catastrophe the saving grace of rom-coms is just “silly.”

You met Sharon through Twitter and eventually became friends. Did you always have the hope of working together?
Well, no. At first, I was just a fan of hers. We just became friends and we realized we had a lot in common. We thought a lot of the same things were funny. We kind of had been kicking around our own versions of a story, so we just smashed them into each other and came up with Catastrophe.

Did you have any trepidation about turning your friendship into a working relationship?
Our relationship hadn’t been around too long so it’s not like there’s a wealth of memories we built up that could have been destroyed if we didn’t enjoy working with each other. There was trepidation when we started writing together, though. Not everyone can write together, certainly. So we were grateful when we realized it was fun.

What about adding the onscreen romance?
It wasn’t too weird to be writing something that had a romantic element to it with each other, only because both of us would, like, cut off an arm to serve a story. I remember at some point, writing the scripts for season one, I was, like, “So, this is super weird, right?” And she was, like, “It really is!” And then we both looked at our keyboards for ten minutes and then it passed. We just charge forward to make the story. We try not to bother ourselves with anything as silly as our own emotions or fears. Why would we let that stop us, you know?

Did you ever consider naming yourselves something other than your actual names?
Oh, totally. We meant to, but as we were writing, we kept our names, since aspects of it were autobiographical for both of us, we thought it would be easier to kind of access honest emotions about stuff if we kind of tricked ourselves into thinking we were talking about ourselves sometimes. So we were going to change them, but then it just felt too weird after a certain point.

How do your spouses feel about the autobiographical aspects of the show?
I know it’s weird for my wife to hear things in the show that are practically transcriptions of things that happened to her or to us. But I think they get a laugh out of it, and we tell them so they’re aware of what’s happening in the scripts and stuff. We’re also friends with our spouses and we care what they think about what we do. And both our spouses are both very funny as well.

How much of the show is scripted?
The show is one hundred percent scripted. There’s almost no improvisation. We’re despots that way. Improvisation produces amazing, amazing comedy and many people use it to brilliant effect. We generally don’t because we’re acting out all the roles constantly as we read and re-read the scripts to each other, because that’s how we work. So by the time we got ready to shoot it, it was pretty locked, since we agonized over every syllable that every character says.

How did Carrie Fisher get involved in the project?
We saw her give an award to Graham Norton at the Attitude magazine awards last year and she was so amazing, and Sharon said, “We should see if we could get her to play your mom.” And I thought that was crazy. I mean, how the hell? But then we just went through the normal channels. It was ridiculous! I didn’t believe it until we had her fully shot. I didn’t even believe it when I saw her walk onto the set. Why wouldn’t she in the middle of the day come to her senses and think: What the hell am I doing with these clowns?

Your show has been credited with revitalizing the romantic comedy genre. How do you feel about that?
You know what, that’s sort of a silly conversation because the trends reflect that maybe the fact that a smaller percentage of annual global film budgets is being devoted to romantic comedies and who seriously cares about that? Especially when you’re trying to make something good, you can’t concern yourself with trends, or you’ll just make silly garbage. People want to file it under romantic comedy, that’s fine with me. That’s not my place to do it. Our job is to make compelling story that is funny.

Are you worried about season two living up to season one?
I’m totally worried about it. I’m one hundred percent worried about it. The pressure comes from Sharon and myself because the network will be forgiven, but we won’t. So it’s our duty to make it excellent.

What can we expect in season two?
The only thing we’re saying about the second season is that it will be in the future. And I suppose you might say more of sequel than a continuation. You can only show a couple meeting for so long, and now they’ve met. So it’s going to be a different ball of wax. We’re casting for season two right now. And it’s so fun, I’m going to throw up.

Wake Up Call

One night at an economy motel, I ordered a 6 a.m. wake-up call. The next morning, I awoke before 6, but the phone did not ring until 6:30.

“Good morning,” a young man said sheepishly. “This is your wake-up call.” Annoyed, I let the hotel worker have it. “You were supposed to call me at
6!,” I complained. “What if I had a million-dollar deal to close this morning, and your oversight made me miss out on it?”

“Well, sir,” the desk clerk quickly replied, “if you had a million-dollar deal to close, you wouldn’t be staying in this motel!”

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare “Supremacy” DLC Out For PS4, PS3 & PC [Photos]

Your copy of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare just got a recharge since its latest DLC pack, “Supremacy” is available today for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC. As usual multiplayer fans get blessed with four new maps while the Exo Zombie portion of the game also gets some add ons.

The four new maps are Parliament, Kremlin, Compound and Skyrise:

·         Parliament: Docked on the River Thames, this military cargo ship delivers a view of the London cityscape along with a fast-paced combat experience. Mixed site-lines provide opportunities for all styles of play to dominate this medium-sized map.

·         Kremlin: Gamers must prepare for intense combat in Red Square. Secure elevated positions to give the team a strategic advantage, or use exoskeleton capabilities to avoid being caught in the minefield that activates mid-match.

·         Compound: Players take combat preparation to the limit in an Atlas training facility hidden away in the Colorado wilderness, as they’ll have to be quick on the trigger in this small, symmetrical map, which funnels high-speed combat through tight corners to the main tower structures.

·         Skyrise: Players deploy to an Atlas Skyscraper overlooking the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. Based on the fan-favorite Highrise, from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 by Infinity Ward, this map brings new exoskeleton mechanics to the classic multiplayer layout. Gamers must dominate the power positions in the center of this small-to-medium sized map to control the key navigation points.

Also, Exo Zombies now has Bruce Campbell (Burn Notice) in the mix.

Check out images of the new maps below and on the following pages.

THE LAST LINE. THE LAST WORDS. THE LAST CHANCE. Ifferon is one of the last in the bloodline of the dead god Telm, who mated with mortal women, and who imprisoned the Beast Agon in the Underworld. Armed with a connection to the estranged gods in the Overworld and a scroll bearing Telm's powerful dying words, he is tasked with ensuring the god's vital legacy: that Agon remain vanquished. Fear forces Ifferon to abandon his duty, but terror restores his quest when the forces of Agon find his hideaway in an isolated coastal monastery. Weighed down by the worries of the world, but lifted up by the companions he encounters along the way, Ifferon embarks on a journey that encompasses the struggles of many peoples, the siege of many lands, and discoveries that could bring hope to some—or doom to all.

The Knights of the Flaming Blade were mystic swordsmen who served the Council of Sages, but hundreds of years have passed since the Long Winter destroyed the old kingdoms. In a new world of invention and reason, the deeds of warriors with flaming swords are now thought to be only mythic tales. One night Kyric meets a lunatic criminal named Aiyan. In his ravings, Aiyan tells him about an immortal man who lived before the Long Winter, whose veins run with the blood of a dragon, a man at the center of a web of minions, all with the power to control the will of others. He also claims to belong to a secret order of knights that opposes these men. If this is true, and Aiyan has really stolen a priceless map from the men of the dragon's blood, it will plunge Kyric into a deadly plot he is not prepared for, involving warriors with the hidden powers of the old world. But does Aiyan speak the truth, or is he simply a madman?

Take Two Polls and Call Me in the Morning

Thank you for coming in for your political checkup.

I’m Dr. Herr. No, we no longer use the term “spin doctor.” I’m a campaign management health specialist. Don’t worry, honest mistake.

So let’s take a look at your chart, Mr. Perry. You just announced you’re running for president, right? Mm-hmm. First off, I don’t like the looks of your campaign logo. It looks like a sperm wearing sunglasses, frankly. But let’s move on.

I’m reading your campaign website now. “How Rick Perry Befriended the Real ‘Lone Survivor’ Navy SEAL”? You’re trying too hard, Rick. We don’t need the meet-cute backstory. This isn’t “You’ve Got Mail.”

And what’s this — “Perry Has Demonstrated Mastery of Foreign Policy in Speeches, Opeds, Videos and Interviews,” eh? Just not in Texas! Hey, don’t get mad, I’m just a physician.

Let’s turn to your announcement speech.

“For years we had an outhouse, and mom bathed us in a number two washtub on the back porch.” Good, you checked the self-made man box. I bet the other candidates wish they had an outhouse to brag about.

Next. “We have been led by a divider who has sliced and diced the electorate, pitting American against American for political purposes.”

Mr. Perry, you just admitted that Barack Obama is good at his job. “Political purposes” means winning elections. The American people don’t really care about uniting. You’ve heard of MSNBC and Fox News, right?

I’d go on, but I don’t have time. A 2,800-word announcement speech? Really? That’s a State of the Union Address.

I’m writing you a prescription for a diuretic. If you have to go to the bathroom more, your speeches might get shorter. Also take some gingko biloba, for memory. I saw you in the debates four years ago. Good luck.

***

Send in the next patient, please. Mike Huckabee, how are you doing? I see you on TV all the time. You’re on more than the Duggars! Sorry, sore subject.

Listen, Mike, you’re a media-savvy guy. But to show public forgiveness for an admitted molester while joking that you would have dressed like a woman in high school to shower in the girls’ locker room is what we in the medical community call “cognitive dissonance.”

I’m prescribing Alendronate. It’s a osteoporosis drug. It will strengthen your spine so you can be tough on crime, and not just when it’s committed by non-friends. It’s standard Republican medicine. Democrats tend to have an allergic reaction.

Also, I’m looking at an X-ray of your campaign platform. You support something called the FairTax. Nowhere does it say what it really is: a national sales tax.

Think this through. I know you’re a Washington outsider. But are you aware of Congress? Do you really want them debating how high to tax your gun purchases? Or, God forbid, your lavalier microphones?

Remember, you run for president with the Congress you have, not the Congress you wish to have.

You can pay the receptionist for the visit. You do have your Obamacare card, right? Joking!

***

Who’s next? Ah, Senator Rand Paul. It’s a pleasure to meet another man of medicine. My brother is an eye doctor. He visits my summer home sometimes.

Let’s take a look at your chart. You have a lot of stamina. You get regular exercise fighting for difficult causes. You actually got the PATRIOT Act changed. Not even Bernie Sanders or Zacarias Moussaoui could do that.

But I’m concerned. A genetic test has revealed a recessive gene that could cause trouble for you later on. It’s normally passed down by the father.

It flared up in 2010, when you admitted you had a problem with the public accommodations section of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. “I think it’s a bad business decision to ever exclude anybody from your restaurant,” you said. “But at the same time I do believe in private ownership.”

You added that “this is the hard part about believing in freedom.” Dr. Paul, excluding African-Americans from a restaurant is not freedom. It’s something else entirely.

We thought we had cured this affliction years ago, but it’s coming back. One of the symptoms is saying, “Why would you go to a place where you’re not welcome?” Well, to put it in layman’s terms, because this is America.

I know it took time for you to recover from that episode. But I believe the condition is chronic.

So I’m prescribing Provigil. It’s a so-called “smart drug.” It will help you think more clearly so you can avoid advocating pre-civil rights era policies. You should also take Xarelto. It ensures the flow of blood to the heart.

Do we have anyone else in the waiting room? No? Don’t tell me Jeb Bush cancelled again. I just hope I can squeeze him in before the Iowa caucuses.

Shuteye: Logan Brill’s new album is wake up call for Nashville

Logan Brill’s album, “Shuteye,” released this week, should be a wake up call for a dormant Nashville.

In the meantime, Brill isn’t getting much shuteye of her own these days. In fact, when the 25-year-old leggy blonde with a voice that has been compared to Bonnie Raitt does manage to catch a few hours of sleep, it’s typically on a family member’s or a friend of a friend’s too-short couch.

“I’m tall and my legs usually hang over the sides,” she said with a laugh during our chat backstage at MerleFest before she played the Cabin Stage between Hot Rize and Trampled By Turtles.

She’s just fine with the lack of quality sleep. In fact, she wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s been a busy couple of months full of firsts. She made her way from coast to coast debuting first at MerleFest followed by Stagecoach and then the Grand Ole Opry, where she is set to play again on July 25. “It’s a small price to pay. I’m very blessed.”

When asked what it’s like to spend most of her time traveling from gig to gig in a van full of guys, Brill says, she’s used to it because she used to perform with her brothers’ band. “I enjoy being with a group. I feel like one of the guys.”

The Knoxville, Tennessee, native’s sophomore album, “Shuteye,” released today and has already caught the attention of The Daily Country, among others. Brill caught my attention because her music is everything that Nashville is pumping out today is not.

“The music I love to write and sing brings out a side of me I don’t see a lot,” she says. The combination is a mix of blues, country, roots, folk and something that is hard to define, but easy to listen to.

“Country, blues, and Americana really speak to me because the very nature of each of the genres is to sing about everyday things in a beautiful, expressive way,” she says on her website.

Her debut album, “Walking Wires,” released two years ago has been recognized by Southern Living, Country Weekly, CMT and Billboard, among others.

Her musical influences include the aforementioned Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, John Hiatt, the Eagles and Van Morrison, among others.

Despite being a relative Nashville newcomer, Brill has already opened for numerous country legends including Merle Haggard, Gary Allan, Dwight Yoakam, Josh Turner, Alabama and Leon Russell, among others. “I got to open for Steve Earle on my 23rd birthday. I’ve been really lucky.”

Stand outs on her new album include the sultry “Don’t Pick It Up,” along with “Woman On Your Mind” with a guest appearance by David Nail. I found the ballad “I Wish You Loved Me” with a guest appearance by Charlie Worsham to be haunting along with ‘The Bees.”

“I been lookin’ for a better way of life, somewhere I can call home,” she croons on “The Bees.”

Brill will find herself settling down someday. But if this new album is any indication, it’s not going to be any time soon. And I predict you’ll be hearing a lot more from her before it happens. Give her new album a listen. Would love to hear what you think.
