Nicki Minaj Hits Back At Critics Who Called Her Hypocritical

Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination Costume Institute Gala

Source: Rabbani and Solimene Photography / Getty

Nicki Minaj caught a heavy bout of criticism after fans who read her ELLE July cover story article believed she might have taken shots at sex workers and women who promote sexy images via Instagram. In a profanity-laced response, the Queens superstar fired back on the critics as only she can.

“I don’t know if I’m doing the same thing they’re doing, because I’m selling sex appeal,” Minaj said in the interview. “So I can’t look down on these girls. I may not be having sex with people, but I’m still selling sex appeal.”

In context, Minaj appeared to be mulling over what she felt was the struggle over being an artist who many considered physically attractive while balancing that with having boundaries on what others get access to. Even in the interview, the writer noted that Minaj was thinking as she went along and it didn’t feel like a declarative statement but that didn’t deter her detractors.

“Suck my d*ck **SHOLE. Had u read the article, I was critiquing MYSELF more than ANYTHING. What I SAID was: I HOPE my overt sexual LYRYCS & PHOTOS don’t make my fans THINK that I’m telling them to be promiscuous & to know their worth! Lyrics, photos & F*CKING r all 3 diff things,” Minaj responded to a fan who tried to throw shade.

“A woman can be a “freak” w|her man, sexual, spit explicit lyrics, an exhibitionist, love freaky girl talk w|her girlfriends, require men to treat her like a QUEEN, etc. NONE OF THAT EQUATES TO SELLING P*SSY. Now pop my d*ck outcho mouf. The Nicki hate train has left the bldng,” Minaj added.

“[N]ow on another note, btch I just found out #BED is #1 in 48 countries!!!!! I’m so fkn happy. I’m bout to board this jet & go finish shooting this video. Ima be mad sexy in it. Plus I’m meeting up w|my d*ck appointment out there too. Who gon check me boo,” Minaj added to the last of her salvos towards the Twitter critic.

Welp, guess that settles that.

Q-Tip Says F*ck The Grammys Over Snub, A Tribe Called Quest Exploited

This morning (Nov. 28), the 2018 Grammy nominees were announced and Black Twitter was all happy since so many Hip-Hop acts, like Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino, got blessed with numerous nominations. However, one artist with his eye on the jig is Q-Tip.

The Abstract is peeved consider that A Tribe Called Quest performed at the 2017 Grammy ceremony, yet the group’s latest, critically acclaimed We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service album was nowhere to be found on the list of nominees.

Tip took to Instagram to drag the Grammys for what he considers the exploitation of his group.

“[I’m] sick of y’all f*cking Grammy n*ggas man. You get us to get out there and f*cking perform last year and close the sh*t and y’all don’t get us no fucking nominations?” says Tip. “9th, what happened?”

Tip is referring to 9th Wonder, but he meant no disrespect (Rapsody’s Laila’s Wisdom album caught a nomination, though).

He added, “We don’t get sh*t?! For that album. For that album!”

And that’s just part one.

Get off my lawn

A post shared by Q-Tip The Abstract (@qtiptheabstract) on

Tip went on to stress the importance of ATCQ’s album while pleading that y’all not fall for the “diverse” Grammy’s jig since being Black is what his group stood on. #facts

New Balance #TCSNYCMarathon Commercial Features A Tribe Called Quest

“I sport New Balance sneakers to avoid a narrow path,” spit the late, great Phife Dawg on A Tribe Called Quest’s “Buggin’ Out” back in 1991. Now, New Balance used the track from the classic The Low End Theory album for a commercial tagged to today’s (Nov. 5) New York City Marathon.

Titled “Dear New York City” we’re not going to mention why it took so long for New Balance to use Phife’s bars in a spit. The clip has been out about month, so please forgive us for just noticing.

Punk before punk existed, three teenage brothers in the early '70s formed a band in their spare bedroom, began playing a few local gigs and even pressed a single in the hopes of getting signed. But this was the era of Motown and emerging disco. Record companies found Death’s music— and band name—too intimidating, and the group were never given a fair shot, disbanding before they even completed one album. Equal parts electrifying rockumentary and epic family love story, A Band Called Death chronicles the incredible fairy-tale journey of what happened almost three decades later, when a dusty 1974 demo tape made its way out of the attic and found an audience several generations younger. Playing music impossibly ahead of its time, Death is now being credited as the first black punk band (hell…the first punk band!), and are finally receiving their long overdue recognition as true rock pioneers.

For Anyone Who’s Ever Been Called a Nickname They Don’t Like

This is Phillip, my wonderful husband of 12 years.

2015-07-02-1435832785-2314344-DSCN3942.JPG

He was named after his mom’s dad Phillip Gordon, who was a captain in the Army Signal Corps.

2015-07-02-1435832830-7691894-grandpagordon.jpg

“Phillip” is what you’ll see written on my husband’s birth certificate, and his family has never called him anything other than Phillip. He’s never gone by anything else in his life.

His name has two syllables in it: Phil-lip. You can clap it out if you want to.

However, the world in general is absolutely convinced that his name is “Phil.” Whenever we meet someone new, here’s how the conversation goes:

“Nice to meet you, I’m Phillip.”

“Well, gee golly, it’s great to meet you, too, Phil.”

Every. Time.

It’s like some vast Truman Show — style conspiracy, where everyone seems to be in on it except for us.

But we’ve lived in far too many places for them all to be working together against us: Minnesota, Utah, Ohio, and now here in New England.

Everywhere, he gets called “Phil.” Even the emcee at our wedding reception called him Phil (and now that I’m thinking about it, I’m wondering why we paid that guy. I mean, shouldn’t there be like a 5 percent discount for calling the groom by the wrong name?)

Now, I have nothing against the name Phil. In fact, the Phils I’ve known are hilarious, nice guys.

It’s just not Phillip’s name.

We’ve moved around a fair amount in our married life, but we plan to stay here in New England and never move again. We’re putting down roots.

Which is why I was so concerned when Phillip came home from his first day at his new job here and casually mentioned that the plaque on his office door read “Phil Evans.”

“You have to get that changed!” I cried. “Right now, before all your co-workers and your boss think you go by Phil and that becomes your name for the next 40 years you work there! It might already be too late!”

(You can see that I take this somewhat more seriously than he does.)

So off he went to Human Resources and asked for a new plaque with his full name.

The next morning, he showed up at work to find that they’d gone overboard and put this up on his door instead:

2015-07-02-1435832964-8958410-nametag.jpg

(This isn’t the real thing, by the way, just an artistic representation. Phillip’s work deals with government contracts and has some super-secret “ruin the blogosphere by not allowing photos” policy.)

Long story short, he’s not “Phil” at work anymore. The downside is, he’s now the snobby guy who has to have his educational title and middle initial listed with his full name at all times.

Oh, well. We can deal.

Don Lemon Called An Uncle Tom On Live Television [VIDEO]

Let us start this story by saying that Don Lemon stays losing. The CNN anchorman was down in South Carolina covering the murder of nine people in a historic Black church by a white male terrorist when a Black woman decided she wouldn’t wait until the cameras stopped rolling to let him know exactly how she felt about him.

“Are you angry, Don?,” the woman can be heard saying emphatically as Lemon was speaking with his colleague John Bernman about the situation in Charleston.

At one point the woman—who seemed upset over a lack of coverage of the anger in Charleston—even called Mr. Lemon, and Barack Obama for good measure, an Uncle Tom.

Needless to say, the clip has already started trending, it can be seen below, and the slander will surely be phenomenal. After all, this is Don Lemon.

However, don’t let this distract you from the tragedy that occurred in Charleston last night. #staywoke

News in Brief: New Report Finds Humanity 10 Years Away From Something Called Ash Age

TUCSON, AZ—Explaining that the large-scale shift in geologic conditions and social organization would require a new taxonomic classification, researchers at the University of Arizona released a report Tuesday revealing that humanity is approximately 10 years away from something that will be called the Ash Age. “According to our projections, within the next decade, conditions on Earth will become such that human civilization will enter a span of time best classified as the Ash Age, or potentially the Gray Epoch,” said the study’s co-author Kevin Reynolds, who told reporters that by 2025, Ash Age peoples will discontinue their city- and village-based societies and transition to the more common “roaming clan system” that will define life for the next era of human existence. “Our data indicate that the Ash Age will be further subdivided into three distinct periods, known as the Smoldering Ash Age, the Middle Ash Age, and the …

‘Mad Max’ Sequel Planned, Will Be Called ‘Mad Max: The Wasteland’

The Road Warrior’s road will continue.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” did so well at the box office during its opening weekend that director George Miller says there’s already a sequel planned and it’ll be called “Mad Max: The Wasteland.”

The movie, which cost $ 150 million to make, earned $ 45 million domestically and another $ 65 million overseas for a total of $ 110 million in its opening weekend.

Miller joined Twitter over the weekend to make the big announcement:

Although Miller’s account is unverified, the tweet echoes comments he made last week in “The Q&A With Jeff Goldsmith” podcast.

“We’ve got one screenplay and a novella. It happened because with the delays (while making “Fury Road”), and writing all the backstories, they just expanded,” Miller said in comments transcribed by The Playlist.

Variety reports that Tom Hardy, who plays Max, has said his contract covers three more films, should they be made.

Warner Brothers has yet to confirm a sequel, the entertainment news outlet reported. However, given the box office numbers as well as widespread acclaim (the film has a 98 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes), a sequel seems like a safe bet.

A Trojan Horse Called Tidal: It’s the Strategy That Matters

2015-04-28-1430243671-5160134-TidalLogo.png

Barely a month after the launch of Jay Z’s Tidal, with major artists lining up to show support and journalists signaling the arrival of a big new digital music gorilla, the tide of opinion seems to have dramatically turned.

The Tidal app has sunk in popularity, a new CEO steps in, and many — from self-righteous bloggers to opinionated venture capitalists — have suddenly written it all off. They claim Apple, Spotify, and Pandora are too entrenched, too richly endowed, and far too big to compete with. The argument goes that a pricey premium service like Tidal, backed by rich, naïve artists, just can’t catch up to the big horses. Those big horses are willing to step up to expensive record label deals. And they can afford to absorb losses for years as they build large subscriber bases, leaving others in the dust. Some of these competitors might even retaliate against Tidal, withholding promotion for artists who give Tidal exclusives.

Even artists have piled on. They see Tidal as a squandered opportunity, part of the same wave of ornery streaming business models that depressed the value of recorded music for all artists. (Tidal may be worse in their view, given the wealthy artists backing it.)

No matter that we’re only a month in, or that Tidal and predecessor Aspiro are actually niche services — offering high fidelity streaming for a premium fee. Forget about the fact that major labels are now pulling back dramatically on their partners’ rights to stream free advertising supported “interactive” music — a weaker business than Tidal’s premium business model.

And while we’re at it, also forget that committed digital services with patient backers can find life and profits over time with digital music. Definitely don’t mention Rdio or tiny 8tracks to these opinion leaders, either. They’re both doing well, punching well above their weight class, lining up carrier deals, building audiences — one is even profitable.

That’s a lot of forgetting and secrets to keep. Here’s what everyone seems to be missing:

Tidal’s biggest promise was never the service itself, nor is it the idea of slightly higher streaming compensation for artists; rather, it’s the emerging artist strategy behind Tidal that could be the biggest game-changer over time.

Tidal is actually just one piece of a broad strategy to empower artists with their own digital platforms, tools, and even the influence of a bigger organization. The idea is to help make a difference for artists over time. Jay himself said it.

If you don’t believe this, look no further than Roc Nation, Jay’s management company, which not only manages music stars like Rihanna, Shakira, and Haim, but now also has a sports management business, with baseball players to boxers under contract. It’s not a perfect scenario, and some relationships haven’t worked out. But it is a clear step towards the goal of building a supportive artist-centric enterprise.

Roc Nation’s site sells pricey merchandise, and its mobile business is quietly setting the stage for mobile commerce from its artists sites, too. If this strategy were to gain traction, it could be a game-changer. Roc Nation could not only sell merchandise, but they can add tickets and potentially, music, too. They can build a base of customer relationships and a robust D2C business for its clients.

This strategy — called Direct to Consumer or “D2C” — used to be a boring afterthought in the recorded music business — the back office where labels sold box sets and repackaged catalog music.

Today, with music margins shrinking, streaming competition intensifying, and many parties scrambling to mark out space in a disrupted music market, it is a priority for all, labels and artists included. Over time, it could be much more important than album exclusives or short-term content “windows” from warring streaming services, too.

Everyone in the music ecosystem needs a D2C strategy as they revaluate and reinvent — and a major manager like RocNation, Tidal included, is in a strong position to build out this strategy.

It is not clear how close the relationship is between the new Tidal team and the RocNation team, but this family of interests definitely looks potent. No doubt that Tidal’s execution is important — poor execution helps no one — but the smart strategy behind this broader enterprise could be a game changer.

Clay Aiken: My Campaign Faced So Much Cynicism, We Called It ‘What The F**k Mountain’

Clay Aiken, the runner-up from the second season of “American Idol” who lost his bid for Congress in North Carolina in 2014, told HuffPost Live he faced a great deal of cynicism when he first announced his political plans.

“Yeah, there was cynicism. I mean, we called it, we called it ‘What The Fuck Mountain’ for a while,” said Aiken, who’s been busy promoting a documentary series he filmed for the Esquire Network called “The Runner-Up.” “We called it that for a while because it was that reaction that people had when they found out Clay Aiken’s running for Congress. ‘What the,’ you know?”

Aiken, a Democrat, was defeated by Rep. Renee Elmers (R-N.C.) in the race to represent the state’s 2nd District. He recently told Time another run for office could be in his future.

“The Runner-Up” premieres Tuesday night at 10 p.m. ET on the Esquire Network.

The Night a Gay Don Draper Called Peggy Lee

Peggy Lee’s “Is That All There Is?” opens and closes Mad Men’s mid-premiere of its final season, and it’s the perfect anthem for the talented but self-destructive alcoholic, 40-something Don Draper. I was ahead of Don. It was the perfect anthem for budding alcoholic me when I was five in 1973.

That’s when I saw Miss Lee singing it on some variety show. I stood on the shag carpeting of my family’s living room in small-town Texas mesmerized. She stood in a white fog on the Zenith TV screen, like a glamorous ghost in a platinum-blonde Cleopatra wig wearing about 200 yards of white, diaphanous chiffon and blue-tinted sunglasses, lenses the size of my little head. She had a black dot on her right cheek, just like Miss Kitty on Gunsmoke.

The haunting, fatalistic song had me hooked from the first verse. Even though it was a very grown up song, it wasn’t that odd that it spoke to my five-year-old gay mind. It was a story song, after all.

In “Is That All There Is?” she assumes a louche, seen-it-all demeanor, and in a whispery purr of a voice as if she is singing only to you in bed, she sings verse after verse about a life of tragedy and disappointments, and when her father takes her to the circus, she describes it with an ironic wink in her voice as “Greatest show on earth.”

Her voice rises at the end in a question, so that you can almost hear her ask “Right?” But she doesn’t say it, it’s implied. Her bored assessment of the spectacle of clowns, and dancing bears, and pretty ladies in pink tights? “I had the feeling that something was missing. I don’t know what.” Her little girl, pragmatic answer to that disappointment: Let’s keep dancing… break out the booze, and have a ball.

Wow! That’s my kind of little girl.

Like a gay Don Draper, I escaped the sticks and landed in New York City in 1990 where I chased the Mad Men lifestyle long after the Mad Men era had ended but long before the term had become a beautiful cliché. I wasn’t in advertising in the 1960s. I was in the publishing world in the 1990s — less glamour and less money, but the same amount of sex and liquor. While I broke out the booze and had a ball, Peggy Lee’s “Is That All There Is?” followed me wherever I went like ghostly cigarette smoke in a bar.

On one of those break-out-the-booze nights in 1996 at four a.m. — when it was all still fun, but the ice was just beginning to melt — I found myself in my Manhattan brownstone apartment with my best friend, Mr. Parker, playing “Is That All There Is?” over and over and over.

Mr. Parker chimed in with a bray, “My God, that song is brilliant! She’s brilliant! You know, most people think of this as the ultimate downer song. I don’t. Conversely, I think it’s a celebration of the spectacle of life in all its joy and tragedy.”

“Well, she does say that she’s not ready for that ‘final disappointment.'”

“Oh! ‘That final disappointment.’ What a brilliant line. It’s a total alkie song!”

We took gulps of drinks and marinated in the meaning of the song as we let Peggy finish it uninterrupted. In the final verse she says that as fatalistic as her outlook may appear, she’s not going to end it all, and when that “final disappointment” comes she’ll face it, like she has faced the rest of life. She re-phrases the song’s question as a statement that she’ll keep dancing and drinking, “If that’s all.” Pause. “There.” Pause “Is.” Followed by a final vamp and bump bump of the tuba.

We sat in silence and drank, staring ahead.

Then Mr. Parker looked at me with a spark in his glassy eyes. “You know, I have her number.”

“What do you mean you have her number?” I asked incredulously.

“I mean to say that I have her phone number. Right here in my wallet. A friend of mine managed to get it from some hospital she was in. You know she’s always in and out of the hospital.”

“Oh, I know. I read her autobiography,” I said with pride. “She described more ailments and near-death experiences than… than Elizabeth Taylor.”

Mr. Parker pulled out her number and waved it at me.

“Give me that!” Fueled with liquor courage I picked up the cordless phone and dialed.

Ring. Ring. Ri–

“Hello,” a young-sounding woman answered.

“Hi. May I speak to Peggy.”

“Who’s calling, please?”

“Jamie.”

“Okay. Hold on.”

Hold. Hold. I’m hold for Miss Peggy Lee.

And then: “Hello? This is Peggy.”

“Hi Peggy. This is Jamie.”

“Jamie… Anderson?”

“No. It’s Jamie Brickhouse. I’m a huge fan of yours. I met you back stage at one of your New York concerts,” I lied. I never was lucky enough to see her perform. “Peggy, I missed you at Carnegie Hall last year and I’m still sick about it. Do you have any upcoming New York dates?”

“No. Ever since the fall I can’t even get out of bed…” Her words seemed to sink into what I imagined was a cumulus, king-sized cloud of a bed where she was nestled in a quilted, white satin bed jacket, a princess phone cradled between shoulder and ear. She let her words lie there for a beat. And then with a twinkle in her voice she said, “But I’ve still got the voice.” I could almost feel her breath in my ear.

“Yes, Peggy, you’ve still got the voice.” I mouthed “Oh. My. God,” to Mr. Parker. “Am I catching you at a bad time?”

“No? What are you doing?” Her voice was so sexy, the question could have been, “What are you wearing?”

“I’m sitting here in New York with my best friend. Drunk. We’ve been listening to ‘Is That All There Is.’ Peggy, I can’t tell you how many drunken nights you’ve gotten me through with that song.”

“Well,” breath, “I guess my life was worth living.”

I don’t remember the rest of the conversation. After that, I didn’t need to.

“I guess my life was worth living.” What did she mean by that? Was it a sarcastic slap in my face that if she got some lush through another drunken night, then perhaps her purpose on earth was fulfilled, or was she truly acknowledging my reverence for her and the song, meaning that if she could move people so profoundly as she had me, then her life had meaning? I suspect she meant a bit of both.

I thought about the life I had been living in the six years I’d been in New York. This was long before I finally got sober or even thought I needed to get sober. I was living the kind of life I’d always fantasized about back in Texas: the charming Brownstone New York apartment, a career working with writers, a boyfriend (with some boys on the side), and a recirculating waterfall of booze and parties and more booze.

Greatest show on earth. Right?

But at the end of all those parties, after the last guest had gone, I’d always stay up for just. One. More. I’d survey the mess of the party and sit there listening to Peggy as I replayed what had become of my life. The people showed up. We broke out the booze. We had a ball. And then it was over.

I felt like Peggy at the circus. Or Don Draper in 1970. I had the feeling that something was missing. And I didn’t know what.

This essay is adapted from Jamie Brickhouse’s memoir Dangerous When Wet.

Arkansas Senate Passes Religion Bill Called Anti-Gay

(Adds Walmart comment)

By Jon Herskovitz

March 27 (Reuters) – The Arkansas Senate overwhelmingly approved on Friday a Republican-backed bill whose authors say is intended to protect religious freedoms but critics contend could allow businesses to refuse service to gay people.

The Republican governor of Indiana signed into law a similar “religious freedom” bill on Thursday, prompting protests from human rights groups and criticism from some business leaders.

The bill advancing in the Republican-led Arkansas legislature says “governments should not substantially burden the free exercise of religion without compelling justification.”

Supporters say a business should not be forced to, for example, cater a same-sex wedding if doing so would violate the religious beliefs of the owner.

Two of the most powerful companies in the United States, retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc, which has its home office in Arkansas, and technology giant Apple Inc have criticized the measure.

“We feel this legislation is counter to this core basic belief of respect for the individual and sends the wrong message about Arkansas, as well as the diverse environment which exists in the state,” a Walmart spokesman said in a statement.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, referring to the measures in the two states, said in a tweet: “Apple is open for everyone. We are deeply disappointed in Indiana’s new law and calling on Arkansas Gov. to veto the similar HB1228.”

The measure passed the Arkansas House in February by a comfortable margin and now goes back to it for consideration of amendments in the Senate version. Governor Asa Hutchinson, a Republican, has said he would sign the measure into law.

A U.S. judge last year struck down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage but the decision has been put on hold pending appeals. (Reporting by Jon Herskovitz and Steve Barnes; Editing by Sandra Maler & Kim Coghill)

I Called Myself a Bitch, and Then Thought Twice About It

Last week, I called myself a bitch. It was shorthand, really. I had an unpleasant exchange with a male banker and left feeling that the only way to be taken seriously was to act like a bitch.

In writing about the experience, what I found most interesting in people’s responses (aside from the majority of online commentators basically telling me to shut up and stop complaining) was how many female friends bumped up against my use of the word bitch.

In part, I wrote: “It’s second nature for women to switch into bitchy, bossy, don’t-fuck-with-me-mode, because how often are we spoken to differently than the man standing next to us? How often do I have to raise my voice to be taken seriously?”

A coworker emailed me: “Unless you were flipping desks or threatening to get these dudes fired, you weren’t acting bitchy — you were acting professional.”

She’s right. So I thought about the word. And I thought more about the word. It’s everywhere. Often not even beeped out of television shows, “bitch” is in rap songs and pop songs and on t-shirts. “It’s Britney, bitch.” “I’m in Miami, bitch.”

For millenials, the word has become a replacement for the exclamation mark.

But it also has roots deeply established in feminism and every woman I’ve talked to has a different relationship with the word — depending on the situation. Like the often-wrongly cited example of how many different words Eskimos have for “snow,” bitch seems to have just as many meanings.

I took out a pen and paper and tried to breakdown the word.

BITCH:
a. Bossy; to bitch someone around.

b. Complaining; bitching and moaning.

c. Inferior; to be someone’s bitch, acting like a little bitch.

d. Overly emotional or moody; she has her period and is acting like a total bitch.

e. Aggressive; that bitch just pushed to the front of the line.

f. Rude; what a bitch…she didn’t even say hello.

As one friend put it, sometimes people are mean and we need a word to describe them — like “asshole” or “jerk.” Sometimes bitch is just a synonym.

someecards

But where bitch gets interesting is when it’s used to illustrate power and control within genders. Easy example: a man doesn’t act manly enough, or fails to exert power, and he is called a bitch. A woman has too much power or control and she is called a bitch.

I think we assume that if a woman is any of the things listed above (bossy, aggressive, rude), then people will think she’s a bitch. This may be the case.

But I called myself a bitch. Why? As a reminder, I didn’t flip one desk.

I was assertive. I was confident. I was logical. I explained that their repeated mistakes were unacceptable. I was clear.

Here’s what I wasn’t: I wasn’t bubbly. I wasn’t helpless. I wasn’t doting. I wasn’t meek. I wasn’t flirtatious. I wasn’t charmed and I wasn’t charming.

Yet somehow, leaving the bank, I had taken this social perception of expressing displeasure and replaced it with the word bitch. Was this conditioning so engrained within me? Had it been so keenly absorbed that I couldn’t even feel its presence?

Is it the same reason women chronically ask for less raises than men do? The same reason we’re still paid 77 cents when a man makes a dollar? Are we so viscerally uncomfortable with asking for what we want that we cloak our discomfort in words like bossy, bitchy and cunt?

Gloria Steinem said, “A woman who aspires to be something is called a bitch.”

I was born right smack in the middle of the 1980s. I was raised to believe that I could be anything I wanted if I worked hard. I still believe that.

Believing that it’s okay to ask for what I want — and expecting to be treated equally — are things that sound so antiquated. But they’re not.

I bet the banker from last week and the bankers from the weeks before do not even remember our exchanges.

But what I learned, while they fumbled through their antique word processors, is that it’s not unpretty or unfeminine to be assertive. In the words of my mother, it’s actually pretty bitchin’.

Bride Trashes Gown In Badass Photoshoot After Her Fiancé Called Off The Wedding

Shelby Swink was supposed to marry her college sweetheart on Nov. 1. When he left her just five days before the wedding, the game plan — and life as Swink knew it — quickly changed.

Swink, 23, spent the next few days in shock, rushing to call guests and cancel services. But moping around was the last thing she wanted to do when Nov. 1 rolled around. When wedding photographer Elizabeth Hoard mentioned doing a “trash the dress” photo shoot with friends and family that day, Swink was game.

“I knew that a pity party was the farthest thing from what I wanted or needed,” the Tennessee resident said.

Her bridesmaids were just as game as she was for the dress-destroying shoot. “My friend Carol threw her paint on me, not hesitating for one second, and it splashed all over my dress,” Swink told The Huffington Post. “That’s when I suddenly realized that the dress didn’t matter. It was merely a material item.”

With each flick of paint, Swink felt more and more free: “I let go of everything I was feeling before. I felt free of sadness, free of disappointment, free of anger. I let all of that go and let happiness take over,” she said. “Nov.1 was supposed to be a day full of happiness surrounded by loved ones, and that’s exactly what it was!”

Though Swink had initially worried her parents wouldn’t support the idea, they showed up, too. “My mom had spent so much money on the dress,” she said. “But they were 100 percent supportive. They told me that the money didn’t matter in the end. The only thing that mattered to them was my happiness.”

In the end, the once white gown was a rainbow-colored mess, with paint-plastered feathers scattered all over it.

Today, the dress is being displayed in a local bridal shop in Memphis until early January (a portion of the shop’s sales during this time will go to local nonprofit called Be Free Revolution). As for Swink, she says the roller-coaster experience has reminded her to look inward for happiness.

“We define our own happiness, not who we’re with,” she said. “You have to face life head on and use the lemons it gives you to make some awesome lemonade! Everything happens for a reason.”
