McGraw, Hill demand ‘common sense’ gun control

NASHVILLE — Unlike many other country music stars, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are speaking their minds about guns. In a new interview with Billboard, the superstar couple reflected on the mass shooting in Las Vegas — at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival — and talked about their support for gun control. “Look, I’m a bird hunter — I love to wing-shoot," said McGraw. “However, there is some common sense that’s necessary when it comes to gun control. They want to make it about the Second Amendment every time it’s brought up. It’s not about the Second Amendment.”

What Josh Duggar, Sam Rader and Adam and Eve Have in Common

According to the Bible, the first sinful moment resulted in a realization of nakedness. Instead of Adam and Eve high-fiving each other upon the awesome discovery of their genitals, they hid in shame. This is how the Christian story begins. It starts with sexual shame and repression, and this thread of self-hatred over one’s naughty bits runs through the whole religion.

I know from personal experience. I was a teenage fundamentalist Christian.

Sometimes people ask me when was the moment I knew I was gay. Honestly, I have no idea. When I was coming of age during the late 80s in small town Indiana, there was nothing more horrifically taboo than homosexuality. Absurd philosophies often came from the pulpit on Sunday mornings about how the mythical gay creature came to be. I remember an actual printed pamphlet that circulated my megachurch. In the pamphlet, there were insane calculations of how much poop a gay man might unintentionally eat in his lifetime or how much pressure a colon can take before it ruptures. (Supposedly, it’s just one penis-worth of pressure.) What was the sense in such bizarrely specific speculation? Why was my pastor obsessed with why two dudes might want to bang each other? Why was a great deal of youth group conversation about resisting masturbation? Welcome to the minds of the sexually repressed.

I can’t really pinpoint the moment when I knew I was gay because it was such a gradual unveiling due to constant repression. As soon as puberty unleashed its first rush of hormones, my fantasies were of men. Full-on gay. It’s like my glands were wearing daisy dukes and rollerblading though my body waving glow sticks. Still somehow I was able to convince myself that I was attracted to women while spanking it to the men’s underwear section of the JC Penny Catalog.

My teens were a phase of silent torture. Of falling in “love” with my best friends and trying to cop a feel during sleepovers. Then of course crying to Jesus about it the next day. Go ahead and throw in some “pray away the gay” therapy at now defunct Exodus Ministries. Sexual repression really does a number on a human. It took years before I was finally able to even let the words “I’m gay” into my brain.

Thank God I was eventually found out and essentially ousted. I was poised to marry the preacher’s daughter and had I managed to get away with it, I have no doubt I would currently be a sad liar of a man caught up in my own personal Ashley Madison scandal.

It doesn’t really surprise anyone that Josh Duggar and Christian Youtuber Sam Rader are exposed as sexual hypocrites. Not to misplace blame, but they were screwed from the beginning. If your response to human sexuality is to hide it behind a fig leaf, it’s going to take you to unhealthy and even potentially criminal places.

Sean Penn, Vans and Stacy Peralta Have a Lot In Common

2015-08-17-1439825877-7344708-4.jpg

“They slip in and out real easy, like blunts
you can get different colors, like rainbows

So they don’t get torn in the back
It’s a punk rock shoe, with a logo in the back”

And so goes The Pack’s 2006 hyphy hit “Vans.” The hit track not only helped introduce a whole new audience of sneaker enthusiasts to the classic shoe, but The Pack rapper Lil Uno spit some serious truths when he mentioned that Vans have set a trend since 1966. Common, Musiq Soulchild and Slum Village Celebrates 10th Annual DC Loves Dilla

Last night, the Howard Theatre was filled with several people from all walks of life to celebrate the life of beloved producer, J. Dilla. The event was DC Loves Dilla, and it was it’s tenth year being held.  Every year, a plethora of artists would make an appearance to honor Dilla through classic tracks produced by the Detroit producer, ranging from artists within the DMV area to hip hop legends such as Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, De La Soul, and many more.

This year, Chicago’s legendary rapper, as well as J. Dilla’s former , Common headlined the show along with Slum Village and singer Georgia Anne Muldrow. What made their performances unique during DC Loves Dilla was the addition of The Players, the show’s house band that performs along with every artist there. The Players also had a number of singers that lit up the stage as well.

DC Loves Dilla has always acquired a more mature audience in the DC area, however, it still continues to be a prominent event in DC. Last year, the event made national news after an announcement was made that J Dilla’s production equipment would be placed in an exhibit at Smithsonian’s African American History Museum. With 10 years of success and running, it looks like, DC Loves Dilla will remain one of DC’s special shows. Check out some of the photos below.

The 6 Most Common Complaints Men Have About Marriage

What do married men complain about behind closed doors during couples and family therapy?

Below, marriage therapists open up about the gripes they hear most often from long-married men — and the advice they give both partners during sessions.

1. They complain about their spouses‘ tendency to complain.

Men tend to be tight-lipped in couples’ therapy, said Tim Cavell, a clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience counseling couples. When they do voice frustrations, they usually complain about their spouses’ tendency to complain, he said.

Why are guys so hesitant to open up about their own specific marital concerns?

“The answer lies in the definition of complain,” the Fayetteville, Arkansas-based therapist said, ”It’s ‘to state that one is suffering or in pain.’ So to complain is to say that you’re vulnerable or weak. Most men don’t do that.”

To encourage constructive conversations between the couples, Cavell tells them to phrase their complaints as requests instead. He also gives them a little homework.

“I tell them to schedule times when they can talk safely without interruption and follow basic rules of communication covered in our sessions,” he said, “For instance, taking turns talking and making I-statements instead of you-statements.”

2. They’re bored with their spouses.

Psychotherapist Abby Rodman often hears long-married men complain about becoming disillusioned with their marriages — and a little bored by their wives.

“These men aren’t talking about their sexual interest waning — although that’s a byproduct of the real issue — but rather that their wives no longer make efforts to enrich their own lives through self-improvement, professional growth or new interests,” the Newton, Massachusetts-based therapist said. “I want to be clear that these men aren’t jerks; they really, really want to be connected to their wives in meaningful ways but instead come home every night to partners who only complain about driving carpool and work.”

In her sessions, Rodman encourages the men to cultivate a connection with their spouses, whether it be in the form of a new shared hobby or penciling in weekend trips together.

“I also remind them that they found their wives interesting once and that it’s imperative they find the time — and make the commitment — to rediscover their spouse.”

3.  They think their spouses are bored with them.

Men are equally fearful that their spouses are bored with them, said Jim Walkup, a marriage and family therapist based in New York City.

“When husbands come in for therapy after an affair, they will confess, ‘I just didn’t think my wife cared.'”

While it may sound like a convenient way to shift the blame, Walkup encourages the couples to use that statement as a jumping-off point for a deeper conversation.

“Most couples do not get around to a discussion of how much they matter to one another,” he said. “Perfunctory ‘I love yous’ do not suffice. Real attention to the temperature of the marriage makes a difference — and the discussion will head off his sense that you’ve gotten lost with your children or your job and he doesn’t matter.  One partner’s lack of concern may make the other susceptible to an affair with someone who does care”

 4. They’re not having sex.

Bonnie Ray Kennan has heard quite a bit about the stale sex lives of long-married couples.

“So many husbands can’t understand why their wives don’t initiate sex and or want to have sex,” the marriage therapist of 10 years said. “The thing is, men feel closer when they have sex with their wives, but women will want to have sex with their husbands when they feel understood by them and closer to them.”

While it’s not always going to be hot and heavy between the sheets, physical intimacy needs to be a priority for both spouses, said Ray Kennan, who’s based in Torrance, California.

“The advice I give to men is to really initiate relationship work with their wives,” she said. “Take her to a place away from the home, sit down and work to understand her better. Tell her she seems unhappy and that you would like to help her with this. Then, listen non-defensively to what she says.”

5. They’re not speaking the same love language as their spouse.

Walkup hears plenty of complaints from men whose wives show affection, just not in the way the men want them to demonstrate it. (The husband may live for quality time together, for instance, while the wife prefers expressing her affection verbally.)

To get on the same page, Walkup suggests this simple prompt to couples: “Ask each other: ‘During our life together, could you name five times when I have done something that made you know that I loved you?’ Together parse out the ingredients: Was it an action? Was it touch? Was it words of affirmation? Was it a gift? Was it listening? Armed with this knowledge, you’ll hopefully spend your energy caring in a way that makes each other glow.”

6. They’re sick of the “good cop/bad cop” parenting routine.

No parent wants to be perceived as the sole disciplinarian in their children’s’ eyes. Many of the married men that walk into Ray Kennan’s office feel they’ve been locked into that role.

“Frequently, the husband will be the disciplinarian and the wife will become excessively permissive. They get trapped in that ‘good cop, bad cop’ dynamic.”

To address the imbalance, Ray Kennan reminds her clients about the importance of presenting a united front as parents.

“Your children will be healthier and balanced if you’re contributing in the same way,” she said. “Negotiate with your wife to find ways to integrate both parenting styles into a seamless unit that your children see and trust.”

Common, Slum Village Headlining Acts For 10th DC Loves Dilla Concert

Since 2006, the good folks at entertainment and promotions company Hedrush have been celebrating the life and legacy of James “J Dilla” Yancey by way of its annual DC Loves Dilla Tribute Concert. This year, the two-day celebration of all things J Dilla in the Nation’s Capital feature Chicago MC and actor Common in a headlining capacity.

Hedrush has been working in conjunction with the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities and Pulse DC to put on the 10th DC Loves Dilla event. Common has collaborated frequently with J Dilla and fits the scheme of the event perfectly.

Joining Common onstage will be Detroit’s own Slum Village, featuring original member T3, Illa J and Young RJ running down the hits. Multi-talented West Coast musician and producer Georgia Anne Muldrow also shares top billing.

As in previous DC Loves Dilla events, acts such as Muhsinah, Ra The MC, Awthentik, Wes Felton and others will also grace the stage with musical backing by The Players featuring local drummer and producer Jon Laine.

More from the event’s press release:

“This is a milestone for the DC Loves Dilla family, says producer Brent ‘Munch’ Joseph. “We started this movement in 2006 to honor one of Hip-Hop’s most influential music producers and artists, James Dewitt Yancey a.k.a. J Dilla.”

A stellar line-up is in place for the tribute concert, including Common, Slum Village, Georgia Ann Muldrow, and a host of area music luminaries. Performers will be backed by the official DC Loves Dilla band: ‘The Players’ – a collective of thirteen musicians and vocalists, all overseen by the concert’s musical director and co-producer, Jon Laine. “Our goal has always been to celebrate on a large scale, the legacy and music of J Dilla. To witness the tribute’s growth and the kind of star power the event continues to garner, speaks volumes of J Dilla’s influence” adds Laine.

Day one of the DC Loves Dilla celebration kicks off with a panel discussion at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, July 9, at 6:00 p.m.

The panel, known as Beat Sessions, will feature Amp Fiddler, Slum Village, DJ Spinna, 9th Wonder, Georgia Anne Muldrow and Musiq Soulchild. This event is free to the public but get there early as it’s sure to fill up quickly.

The DC Loves Dilla Tribute Concert takes place at the historic Howard Theatre on July 10th starting at 8:00 p.m. ET and ending at midnight. There’s also an after-party event featuring 9th Wonder and DJ Spinna on the 1’s and 2’s

Snape From ‘Harry Potter’ Now Works For American Airlines Among Common Muggles

Snape has been spotted! He’s not just alive, but seems to have a new day job, too.

American Airlines recently shared a picture on its Facebook page of a Severus Snape lookalike manning a gate at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. The post went viral with more than more than 9,000 likes — probably because it’s surprising to see a wizard from “Harry Potter” working for common Muggles.

“Severus Snape will assist you in the boarding process for Flight Nine and Three Quarters from LaGuardia to Hogwarts,” the post read. We’ll be boarding by Sorting House and are expecting a full flight today.”

“Snape” has been identified as gate agent David Dolci, and it turns out he’s a veteran of social media fame. Dolci reportedly first got Internet attention back in 2012, when a photo of him was shared on Imgur and racked up more than 300,000 views. Since then other travelers have caught on to the airline worker’s resemblance to the fictional character portrayed by actor Alan Rickman.

9 Common Symptoms Of Fibromyalgia And What To Do If You’re Diagnosed

Today is National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day, which raises awareness for a chronic disorder that impacts an estimated five million adults in the United States, and is characterized by widespread pain and tenderness, often accompanied by fatigue, impaired memory and other physical issues. The condition may occur with other chronic pain conditions, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. The exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, but researchers believe it could be the result of several factors, including genetics, illness and physical or emotional trauma, which lead to an abnormal processing of pain.

In the video above from The Doctors, Maggie says she has suffered from fibromyalgia for over 10 years, but receiving the correct diagnosis was a challenge. “I started getting headaches, chronic pain, pain in my hips, my arms, my legs, my joints, and even in my big toe,” she recalls. “X-rays showed no problems with my hips, and tests proved negative for gout, arthritis and even MS.”

After seeing a rheumatologist and a neurologist, she finally learned that she has fibromyalgia.

“Because of my constant pain, I can no longer do all of those things I used to go do, even visiting my children,” Maggie explains. “It’s just awful, because people don’t understand, and it’s been going on for so long that people think I’m making up my symptoms.”

Maggie turns to The Doctors for help. “It’s very frustrating because there’s a lack of information regarding fibromyalgia,” she says. “I would like some relief and some answers.”

In the video above, ER physician Dr. Travis Stork and Dr. Freda Lewis-Hall, Pfizer’s Chief Medical Officer, describe different tests doctors use to diagnosis fibromyalgia, common symptoms and what to do if you receive the diagnosis.

Common symptoms of fibromyalgia include:

  • Widespread pain that lasts for at least three months

  • Fatigue and waking unrefreshed

  • Cognitive impairments

  • Dry eyes and mouth

  • Mood disturbances

  • Stiffness

  • Irritable bowel and bladder

  • Pain or cramps in the lower abdomen

  • Headaches and migraines

Dr. Stork explains that to diagnose fibromyalgia, a physician may perform a tender point exam, in which he or she presses on specific points throughout the body. If 11 out of 18 of the areas cause tenderness or pain, a diagnosis might be made.

Women are five times more likely than men to receive a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, according to Dr. Lewis-Hall, and the disorder can present differently depending on the patient, so treatment will require working with one’s physician and medical team to create a comprehensive and individualized plan. Treatment may include supportive and cognitive behavioral therapies, medications and light aerobic exercise.

Common and John Legend took home the Golden Globe for Best Original Song on Sunday night. “I am the unarmed black kid who maybe needed a hand but was instead given a bullet,” Common said during his acceptance speech in reference to recent events in Ferguson, Missouri. “I am the two fallen police officers murdered in the line of duty.”

Common and John Legend Win Golden Globe For “Glory”, Makes Jay Z Tweet

Common and John Legend repped Hip-Hop beautifully at this year’s Golden Globes. The former G.O.O.D. Music label mates won a Golden Globe for the song “Glory,” from the Selma soundtrack, in the Best Original Song in a Motion Picture category.

Reports Madame Noire:

It was an emotional moment for both men who took time out while accepting their award to acknowledge issues of race and violence currently plaguing our nation.

“The first day I stepped on the set of ‘Selma,’ I began to feel like this was bigger than a movie,” Common said during his acceptance speech. “As I got to know the people of the Civil Rights Movement, I realized that I am the hopeful Black woman who was denied her right to vote. I am the caring White supporter killed on the front lines of freedom. I am the unarmed Black kid who maybe needed a hand, but instead was given a bullet. I am the two fallen police officers murdered in the line of duty. ‘Selma’ has awaken my humanity.”

“Selma is now,” he concluded.

Also, John Legend’s wife quickly became a meme, just because.

Better yet, the win even made Jay Z log in to Twitter.
