McGraw, Hill demand ‘common sense’ gun control

NASHVILLE — Unlike many other country music stars, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are speaking their minds about guns. In a new interview with Billboard, the superstar couple reflected on the mass shooting in Las Vegas — at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival — and talked about their support for gun control. “Look, I’m a bird hunter — I love to wing-shoot," said McGraw. “However, there is some common sense that’s necessary when it comes to gun control. They want to make it about the Second Amendment every time it’s brought up. It’s not about the Second Amendment.”

How Many Lives Did Gun Control Laws Save in Las Vegas? (Answer: Probably Lots)

I’m pro-gun. I say that up front because your beliefs about my intentions will color how you see this post. My intention is to be objective. You can be the judge.

The Vegas gunman used bump stocks on semi-automatic rifles. Those were totally legal. They are also a poor choice of weapons, or so I am told by gun experts. In fact, they are so inaccurate at the distance involved in the Vegas incident that professional snipers say Paddock could have done more damage with a single-shot weapon and some aiming.

The gun experts I talked to (informally) also agree that the shooter would have killed more than a hundred additional people had he used a fully-automatic weapon. You can legally buy an automatic weapon that was made prior to 1986, for about $ 15-20K. The shooter was a millionaire, and he seemed to know a lot about guns. He would have known a fully-automatic rifle is designed to not jam the way his bump stock rifles did. He would have known they fire more bullets per second and more accurately. The death toll would have been much higher had the Vegas gunman used the right weapon.

He knew a fully automatic rifle would be more lethal than a bump stock rifle.

He was rich enough to afford the fully automatic weapon.

He had months to plan and prepare.

He was smart.

And yet he didn’t use a fully-automatic weapon in the attack.

The probable reason is that a fully-automatic weapon is harder to obtain and it raises some flags. I believe even private transactions with those weapons require some government paperwork.

I’m speculating, of course, but it seems to me that the ban on fully-automatic weapons did, over time, create enough friction for the Vegas gunman that he decided to settle for relatively worse weapons.

Ask a gun expert how many more people would be dead if automatic weapons were as easy to procure as bump stocks. My estimate of a hundred extra dead in Vegas is probably low.

Gun control apparently worked in this case, at least to an important degree. The tragedy could have been far bigger. A little bit of friction for obtaining a fully automatic weapon probably saved lives. We can’t know for sure what was in the mind of a madman, but we do know that any kind of friction causes some people to change plans. That’s probably what happened here.

My hypothesis is that crazy people will use whatever weapon is the most effective killing device they can obtain at acceptable cost (friction). Gun laws introduce friction. They are not intended to stop every type of crime or to deter every type of criminal. But it looks like they helped a bit in Vegas. Had there been no friction to procuring fully automatic weapons, it is likely the Vegas gunman would have used them. Why wouldn’t he?

If you want to read my argument for why I am pro-gun, see the end of this prior post.

‘This Is Life With Lisa Ling’: Lisa Ling Talks Gun Control & Embedding With A Militia

Lisa Ling joins Access Hollywood Live’s Kit Hoover and guest co-host Scott Evans to discuss Season 4 of her docu-series “This Is Life with Lisa Ling.” And, what was her experience like embedding with a heavily-armed militia? “This Is Life with Lisa Ling” airs Sundays at 10PM ET/PT on CNN.

The Worst Gun Control Arguments

I’m pro-gun, but mostly for selfish reasons. Some people (such as celebrities) are probably safer with defensive weapons nearby. But I acknowledge the reality that guns make people less safe in other situations. No two situations are alike. That’s partly why the issue can never be fully resolved. Both sides pretend they are arguing on principle, but neither side is. Both sides are arguing from their personal risk profiles, and those are simply different. Our risk profiles will never be the same across the entire population, so we will never agree on gun control.

That said, I want to call out the worst arguments I have seen on the issue of banning bump stocks. If you are new to the conversation, a bump stock is a $ 99 add-on to an AR rifle that turns it into an automatic-like weapon for greater kill power. The Vegas gunman used bump stocks. They are legal, whereas a fully automatic rifle is not.

Many pro-gun people in the debate seem to be confused about the purpose of laws in general. Laws are not designed to eliminate crime. Laws are designed to reduce crime. The most motivated criminals will always find a way, and law-abiding citizens will avoid causing trouble in the first place. Laws are only for the people in the middle who might – under certain situations – commit a crime. Any friction you introduce to that crowd has a statistical chance of making a difference.

Humans are lazy and stupid, on average. If you make something 20% harder to do, a lot of humans will pass. It doesn’t matter what topic you are discussing; if you introduce friction, fewer people do it. With that in mind, let’s look at the least-rational gun control arguments I am seeing lately.

Chicago Example

Gun advocates like to point out that Chicago has strict gun control laws yet high murder rates. This is an irrational argument. The only valid comparison would be Chicago with gun laws in 2017 versus Chicago without gun laws in 2017. Any comparison to other cities, or to other time frames, is pure nonsense. Nothing is a rational comparison to Chicago. There is only one Chicago. And because Chicagoans can easily buy guns from nearby places, the gun ban is probably useless in that case.

Gun opponents use a similarly irrational argument. For example, anti-gun folks might point out that London bans guns and has fewer gun crimes. That’s as irrational as the Chicago argument. There is only one London in 2017. You can’t compare it to anything.

In general, any argument that says, “Look at that one city” is irrational, anecdotal thinking. It has no place in policy decisions.

Criminals Will Break Gun Laws Anyway

As I explained up front, laws are not designed to stop the most motivated criminals. We’ve never seen a law in any realm that stopped all crime. At best, laws discourage the people on the margin. Gun control is no different. The objective is to add some friction and reduce the risk that someone angry enough to pick up an AR doesn’t also have a bump stock in the house.

The Vegas gunman had over 40 guns yet he used bump stocks on his weapons instead of buying illegal fully-automatic weapons in the first place. He also did not purchase grenade launchers, which would have been ideal for his purposes. The reason in both cases is that there was more friction for acquiring the illegal weapons. It wasn’t impossible. It was just harder.

You can Make a Bump Stock on a 3D Printer

No, I can’t. I don’t own a 3D printer. Neither do most criminals. What you mean is that the few people who own 3D printers and have the skill to use them can print bump stocks. Chances are, you’re not one of those people. Again, laws are not designed to stop the most motivated super-criminals. They have lots of ways to get weapons. A 3D printer might be an ideal solution for a few super-criminals. But it won’t have much impact for a number of years on the average person who flips out and wants to start shooting today.

Rubber Bands and other Bump Stock Workarounds

Yes, I know you saw on Youtube a video in which someone rigged an AR with a rubber band on the trigger, or some other clever device that increased the firing speed. I’m no weapons engineer, but I’m fairly certain the rubber band method is less reliable than the bump stock method. And the other workarounds have either more friction (it takes some talent and tools to make anything of that nature) or they are less reliable. I remind you that the goal is not to stop all crime; we’re just trying to add friction to discourage the lazy and less-resourceful types, of which there are many. And perhaps we can add some unreliability to their choice of weapons.

Yes, clever people can create bump stock workarounds that function well enough for making a Youtube video. But most people are not clever, and not terribly resourceful, and they probably haven’t personally tested the rubber band trick. Even a dumb mass murderer wants more reliability than a rubber band suggests. Personally, if I flipped out and decided to kill everyone in my workplace, and I had never tested the rubber band trick, I wouldn’t even consider using it for a real crime, no matter how cool it looked on Youtube.

That’s friction.

Hardly Anyone Has Ever Been Killed by Bump Stock Guns

True. Even if you include the Vegas tragedy, the total percentage of people killed by bump stock-modified guns is tiny. But many people apparently don’t realize that laws are not designed to change the past. Laws are forward-looking devices. And after the Vegas tragedy, 100% of adults have been trained by news organizations on how to procure and use a bump stock. We even know we need multiple rifles because they jam. Compared to last week, the friction for modifying a semi-automatic to an automatic just went from “some” to non-existent. The idea of passing a law banning bump stocks is to add friction to reduce future crimes, not to change the past.

Keep in mind that North Korea might nuke us in the future even though they have no record of nuking us in the past. Policies and laws are not designed to address past risks, only future risks. And our future risk from bump stocks just went through the roof because they are now universally known and also top of mind.

And before you say you already knew how to get a bump stock, just imagine me laughing at you for saying it. I know you already knew how to do that. You are not representative of the entire population of potential killers. No one is suggesting passing laws directed at you personally.

A Guy in Japan Once Killed 30 People With a Knife

The argument here is that motivated killers will find a way to do damage with or without a gun. But does anyone think the guy in Japan killed more people with a knife than he could have with an armory of automatic weapons? And I remind you (again and again) that laws are not designed to stop the most motivated criminals, such as the Japanese stabber. Laws are designed to add friction to the less-clever and less-motivated.

A week ago, a potential killer with low skills and motivation might not figure out how to turn an AR into an automatic rifle. Today – thanks to the news – almost every adult knows how to do it. The existing friction disappeared. You would need to make bump stocks illegal to reintroduce some friction.

Slippery Slope

Gun owners sometimes say banning any weapon leads to banning all of them. In general, the slippery slope argument is nonsense no matter what topic you are discussing. Things do lead to other things, but every decision stands on its own, and should. Banning personal use of grenade launchers did not lead to confiscation of hunting knives, and probably never will. The slippery slope idea inspires fear in gun lovers – because creeping regulations feel like a risk – but in the real world, each decision stands alone. The slippery slope is an irrational fear, not a reasonable factor in policy-making.

The President Can’t Ban Gun Stocks by Executive Order

Sure he can, but it might not be legal. Does that matter?

You think it matters, but it doesn’t. When the Commander-in-Chief makes a thoughtful military decision, and the decision is clearly in the interest of temporarily plugging a security hole during a time of war (with ISIS), that’s defensible no matter what the Constitution says. And you want it that way.

The Constitution grants the Commander-in-Chief a lot of power to make quick decisions on homeland security because speed often matters in such things. As time allows, Congress can do its work. Banning bump stocks until Congress can look into it would be pure Commander-in-Chiefing. It would be public and temporary. Would the Supreme Court overturn the illegal ban? Maybe, but not right away. Remember that the Constitution gives real power to We the People. As long as We the People see our Commander-in-Chief acting responsibly, we’re going to give him a pass, especially for something temporary until Congress gets going.

I acknowledge that the President has no legal authority to ban the sale of legal items. But he could do it anyway. And We the People would largely back him on it so long as it was temporary and clearly intended to give Congress time to address the question.

That’s how Thomas Jefferson would have played it. But he might have looked for a technical way to make his executive order seem legal. I’m sure such an argument exists because lawyers.

Update: The Vegas Killer Would Have Been MORE Deadly Without Bump Stocks

The argument here is that bump stocks make the weapon harder to aim, therefore less lethal. That probably makes sense in some instances, such as a sniper situation. It does not make sense when spraying a dense crowd from above, at long distance. In that case, speed beats accuracy every time.

In summary, I have genuine respect for both sides of the gun control debate. But the arguments I listed above should not be part of the conversation if we are trying to be rational about it.

Update: Readers asked me to describe the best argument in favor of the 2nd amendment. So I will.

Gun ownership protects citizens against the risk of a tyrant trying to take over.

At this point in the reading of this blog, half of you are laughing out loud because you imagine the massive U.S. military squaring off against some rag-tag militia group with rubber bands on their AR triggers. Not exactly a fair fight.

It’s also not the point.

The way private gun ownership protects citizens is by being a credible threat against all the civilians who might be in any way associated with a hypothetical tyrannical leader who uses the military against citizens. Citizens probably can’t get close to the leaders in such a scenario, but it would take about an hour to round up their families, and the families of supporters.

That would do it.

America is unconquerable.

I usually plug a product here. It doesn’t feel right today.

At the heart of the Apollo space program and a remarkable decade of achievement was the team who worked in Mission Control. They were born against a backdrop of economic turmoil and global conflict. Some came from a rural lifestyle little changed from the 19th century. Others grew up in a gritty, blue-collar America of mines and smoke stacks. They ranged from kids straight out of college to those toughened by military service. But from such ordinary beginnings, an extraordinary team was born. They were setting out on what JFK called: “The most hazardous, dangerous, and greatest adventure upon which mankind has ever embarked” and through their testimony – and the supporting voices of Apollo astronauts and modern NASA flight directors – the film takes us from the faltering start of the program through the Mercury and Gemini missions, the tragedy of the Apollo 1 fire to the glories of the Moon landings.

News in Brief: 22-Year-Old Broke, Homeless 10 Days After Taking Control Of Own Finances

MILFORD, CT—Intermittently gnawing at an old apple core and scratching at his unruly bramble of stubble, 22-year-old Daniel Hardin admitted to reporters Thursday that he had become completely broke and homeless 10 days after taking control of his own finances. “I thought it was time to take my payments and bills into my own hands once I graduated, but barely a week after doing that, I found myself fighting off raccoons for access to the best backyard sheds to sleep behind,” said a dirt-caked Hardin, who noted that his current daily routine of finding discarded items to hawk for small change and washing his bare feet in a drainage pipe—which supplanted his previous life of mindlessly charging all his purchases and speaking endlessly on his cell phone without any thought to the costs incurred—can be traced back to the exact moment less than two weeks earlier when …

Amy Schumer Tackles Gun Control On ‘SNL’ With Mock PSA

Amy Schumer kicked off her “Saturday Night Live” hosting debut with a hilarious monologue. But the laughs didn’t stop there.

In what was probably one of the best sketches of the night, Schumer and the SNL cast tackled the issue of gun control with a darkly yet funny mock PSA titled simply “Guns.”

The clip presents a bunch of different scenarios – a girlfriend waiting for her boyfriend at dinner, a husband taking his pregnant wife to the hospital in a cab, two co-workers talking — while a voiceover says, ”Whatever you’re waiting for, whatever you face, whatever you’re looking for, there are things we all share. Love. Family. Connection. A sense of purpose. And also, guns.”

Yep. They went there.

The voiceover continues: “Guns are there in little moments and big ones. They unite us, comfort us, bring us joy and strength.” The scenarios play out with the addition of guns. Even the tiny newborn baby gets one. Scary stuff.

And then the kicker: “Guns: We’re here to stay.”

Why Cosby’s Victims Still Aren’t In Control Of Their Own Narratives

This post originally appeared on Bustle.

By Melissah Yang

In a wrenching one-hour special, more than a dozen women sat down with A&E and recounted the allegations we’ve all become too familiar with: an offer of career advice, a drugged drink, and foggy memories of a sexual assault that, at times, felt unreal. As of August, more than 50 women have stepped forward and levied allegations of sexual assault and rape against longtime family TV superstar Bill Cosby. You saw New York Magazine’s stunning Cosby story, which collected 35 of the alleged victims’ accounts, but putting voices and faces to these claims, one right after the other, was an entirely different experience. While the A&E’s special provided a platform for these accusers, one big takeaway is how much weight the men in Cosby: The Women Speak still had on the sexual assault narrative.

Yes, the women spoke. Supermodel Beverly Johnson claims instantly knowing she was drugged after taking a sip of a cappuccino at Cosby’s insistence. Former Playboy playmate Victoria Valentino said she felt humiliated after her alleged assault, a graphic account that claims she was forced into performing oral sex and was raped “doggy style.”

Other than archived footage of the comedian, who did not provide an interview to A&E, there were just two instances when a male voice entered the storyline, but both times they served as tools to legitimize the women’s claims, as if to say, “If you don’t believe them, there’s this guy who will back them up.”

In July, Cosby Show co-star Joseph Phillips penned a personal blog post titled “Of Course Bill Cosby Is Guilty!” in which said he believed the allegations after a close friend, who has not come forward publicly, confided in him that she had the same experience with the comedian as the other women. In the post, Phillips asked Cosby to recuse himself from the public spotlight to “preserve just a bit of our enchantment” of his legacy. In his A&E sit-down, Phillips remembered his friend asked him a question, the same four-word question facing all of Cosby’s accusers.

“Two hours later, I’ve listened to the whole story, and she says, ‘Do you believe me?’ I say, ‘Yes, I believe you.'”

That simple question is so poignant because it forces you to ask yourself, “What would it take for you to believe these women’s accusations?” Usually it’s tangible evidence like DNA or video footage. Other times, like with Phillips, it’s your history with somebody that convinces you of the truth. In many cases, a person with no dog in the fight will be the unbiased witness that provides authority. But with the controversy surrounding Cosby, it seems as if that voice needs to be male. If Phillips was a female co-star speaking up, I have a feeling she would have been lumped in with the rest of Cosby’s alleged victims. In this case, one woman’s claims, let alone 50, are clearly not enough.

The second man heard in the documentary comes from a recorded comedy set by comedian Hannibal Burress. It was Burress’ joke that flat out referred to Cosby as a “rapist” that initiated the wave of recent accusations, starting with Barbara Bowman’s Washington Post story “Bill Cosby Raped Me. Why Did It Take 30 Years For People To Believe Me?” The subheading for that article, by the way, was “only when a male comedian called Cosby a rapist did the accusation take hold.”

And that’s exactly what happened. “This guy is a man,” Valentino says in the documentary. “A man is making a joke about it in his stand-up routine? And suddenly everybody believes him.” Actress Eden Tirl adds, “There were many, many women who had come forward about it before this stand-up routine, so I think that’s bullshit.”

With allegations going back as far as the 1970s, why are people believing them now? And why are others still not? A quick look at the tweets trending under the show’s hashtag #CosbyWomenSpeak shows opinions on the comedian are heavily divided, and sometimes at a gross magnitude.

As much as the documentary was about the women, the hour was still very much Cosby. A timeline of the comedian’s lucrative career begot each harrowing accusation of sexual assault. You never did quite forget that in the center of all the controversy is still Cosby the family man. Even now, with Cosby set to be deposed in California on Oct. 9 in a civil suit, the focus is on what he will say and how that will transform his legacy.

Regardless of whether the allegations are true, everyone deserves the courtesy of having their voice valued, and these women shouldn’t need a man’s presence to make their stories worth listening to. Even if these women hadn’t publicly identified Cosby, they still should have been heard. So, were you listening? And when the time comes for you to speak up and share your thoughts, what will you say?

‘Family Feud’ Was Out Of Control In Steve Harvey’s ‘Tonight Show’ Return

Steve Harvey has encountered some wild contestants on “Family Feud” before, but on Friday’s “Tonight Show,” the craziness values were tripled.

Harvey returned to the show to play another round of “Feud” with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots, and things got out of hand fast. From the start it was clear that none of the contestants had any idea what they were doing. Fallon was answering like he was on “Jeopardy,” no one knew when to huddle up and The Roots even cheated.

This just proves that when it comes to amazing “Tonight Show” segments, Steve Harvey hosting “Family Feud” is always the No. 1 answer.

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. EST on NBC.

Netflix, Binging And Quality Control In The Age Of Peak TV

Matt Singer posed a timely question today: Why is it that the original programs made by Netflix — the place that perfected binge-viewing — aren’t necessarily all that binge-able?

By downplaying the importance of individual episodes in favor of longform narratives, the company has also downplayed the propulsive storytelling style and shocking cliffhangers that define the best binge-watch shows. A television show structured as a one giant 13-hour story can be highly absorbing. But without those big hooks and twists at the end of every episode, it’s very difficult to make it addictive.

Singer’s onto something here: I’ve spent the summer rewatching “The X-Files,” and there’s something about traditionally made, pre-“peak TV” dramas that often makes them deliciously binge-able. Writers on the kinds of shows that eventually made binging a thing were often under pressure from networks to hook viewers, through juicy relationship arcs, propulsive stories, exciting mythology reveals and hints that something big was coming in the next week. Not all good “binge-ers” have those elements, but many of the good ones are very good at serving up self-contained episodes, distinctive characters and moments so entertaining that you just want another hit of whatever they’re selling.

Obviously television’s ambitions have expanded since the heyday of binge-inducers like “Alias,” “Lost” and “24,” and Netflix is among the many outlets testing the boundaries of what kinds of television can sustain an audience for a binge or a leisurely stroll, even as TV redefines what success means in an era of micro-niches and all manner of nonlinear viewing opportunities.

That said, my first reaction to Singer’s piece on the binge-resistance of Netflix’s dramas consisted of a question: I really wonder how much of that is intentional. It may not be a feature, but a bug.

Singer’s theory is that Netflix executives don’t really care if it takes a few months to watch one of their original series; that’s actually a good thing, if the slow pace keeps a subscription active. That makes sense from a business perspective, but, based on statements Netflix executives have made and the shows they’ve released, I wonder if that’s their primary intent.

My theory’s different: I think Netflix and Amazon executives give their creative types a lot of rope, and I’ve often had occasion to wonder is they’re giving them too much rope. It’s common for their dramas to get tangled up and slow down, even at the pilot stage, and in the middle of seasons, Netflix dramas often sag and meander, and — as Singer notes — they take a long time to work up a head of steam.

My first reaction to Singer’s piece on the binge-resistance of Netflix’s dramas consisted of a question: I really wonder how much of that is intentional. It may not be a feature, but a bug.

But this isn’t just the case at streaming services: It’s happening a lot in the more ambitious realms of television. Maybe it’s just me, but when it comes to many shows, especially dramas, in the cable, pay-cable and streaming arenas, I see a trend toward laxness and a lack of energy and dynamic tension. There’s more ambition than in a derivative NBC or CBS procedural, sure, but there’s also often a lack of urgency within an episode and, most notably, over the course of a season.

It’s also fairly common to find that the character development is not strong and vivid enough to make me want to revisit these shows while they figure out how to crank up the narrative drive, as was the case with Amazon’s “Bosch” and USA’s “Complications.” I did finally begin to enjoy AMC’s “Halt and Catch Fire,” especially in its second season, but most people had checked out well before it kicked into high gear, and that may have doomed the show (though I hope not).

Of course, it’s unfair to cherry-pick the best examples, but let’s face it, this wasn’t too often the case with with the best binge-ers the Commercial Television Machine produced. Even in a bad episode of “The X-Files” or “Lost,” the Mulder and Scully banter or the Hurley quips make up for a lot. Hence my current obsession with what I call B-movie TV: Genre fare that is smart and subversive but also energetic and not overly concerned with being Important. (The two best new shows of the year, Lifetime’s “UnREAL” and USA’s “Mr. Robot” may not neatly fit in the B-movie TV category, but both were pleasingly knotty, had great characters and were suspenseful from the jump. They’re binge-ers, for sure.)

Sag and drift problems have cropped up throughout TV history, obviously. But I think it’s telling that it’s cropping up a lot lately, often at places that could and should know better (despite its great cast and terrific moments, I gave up on the rudderless “Masters of Sex” near the end of Season 2 and haven’t seen a compelling reason to jump back on board). As Todd VanDerWerff has pointed out, TV is fumbling for direction in the age of binging and stacking and all episodes of television existing simultaneously everywhere (well, not really, but it feels that way sometimes). So as TV figures out the creative implications of the nonlinear era, some sloppiness and experimentation is to be expected.

But I think there’s more to it than that. The competition for talent and the huge desire lock down hot writers while also trying to create Signature Programs has led to situations where executives have let way too much bad writing slide.

There’s an enormous scramble for content at the moment, so much so that multiple seasons are being ordered at an accelerated pace and it’s almost normal for shows to be renewed before they debut. That was decidedly not normal only a few years ago. But Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and any number of other new players have changed the game, just as cable did a decade or so ago.

As I’ve argued elsewhere, this is a good thing, overall. Not every show in Ye Olde Golden Age was a keeper, but almost every network was forced to raise its game and give writers more leeway. Hooray!

But there was sigh-inducing side to that revolution: There was too much imitation and a blind pursuit of uninspired dramas about tortured white guys. These days, as TV expands into what FX president John Landgraf has called peak TV, there’s a lot of great TV, but the signal-to-noise ratio is not necessarily heading in a reassuring direction. As TV competes to keep eyeballs on its ever-expanding array of content, we’re being subjected to a lot of empty spectacle and rote brand extension. And it’s worth pointing out, as Linda Holmes does in her great essay series on TV’s growing pains, that the kinds of people who get to make TV now are usually the kinds of people who always have gotten to make TV. Diversity is a buzzword executives know they should throw around these days, but their commitment to it seems tenuous at best.

So this revolution has its frustrations, among them the problems Singer neatly delineates. And given that the issues he noticed and I’ve described are mostly taking place in the streaming, cable and pay-cable arenas, the following statement mostly applies to them: Maybe its because they have too many shows to keep track of, or maybe it’s because they’re working with writers they think might try to get a better deal somewhere else, but I get the sense that a number of networks and executives are not exercising the quality control they used to. It’s a problem.

Too many times lately, with too many shows that are well cast and clearly expensive, I’ve wondered why the people in charge appear to be asleep at the switch. “Fear the Walking Dead” is repetitive and boring, but AMC wants to keep “Walking Dead” mogul Robert Kirkman in the corporate family, so that show’s going to be what Kirkman wants it to be, for good or ill. The last two seasons of “American Horror Story” haven’t been very good, but they’ve been noisy enough to get a lot of eyeballs, and FX wants to be in business with Ryan Murphy, so that show will continue to be variable and frustrating (and maybe occasionally excellent, who knows). “Bloodline” assembled various prestige TV markers without going anywhere all that compelling with them, but it seems like the kind of show Netflix should be making — and if they didn’t make it, someone else might — so it got renewed. And so on.

The power dynamics in the industry are unstable — only in certain places, of course, and only for certain people. But the current scramble for talent has given some writer/producers more power than these kinds of folks have ever had in the past, and the side effects of that development aren’t always good. For one thing, in part due to talent flight, drama pilots on the broadcast networks have been mostly lame and terrible for years, with a few rare exceptions, because those who don’t want to deal with a lot of network interference are going elsewhere. (The CW, which has been on a roll, is the exception among the broadcast networks, but that’s a story for another day.)

The current scramble for talent has given some writer/producers more power than these kinds of folks have ever had in the past, and the side effects of that development aren’t always good.

As many writer/producers head to what they perceive to be greener pastures, executives are doing whatever they can to lock down talent, and the end result of this whole process can sometimes be self-indulgent and lazy television. Drift, repetition and laxness are things a good executive can spot, catch and help correct. With the good or improving shows, that’s likely at least part of what’s happening. Given the glut of bad, lazy or directionless dramas, that’s not happening enough, or some creatives just aren’t listening. When a drama like “True Detective” goes that off-course and wastes that much potential, it’s not just a chance to have fun with memes and hashtags, it’s a sign that something has seriously gone awry in the quality-control systems that helped TV get to where it is now.

HBO, once the strutting king of the TV scene, can’t openly criticize newcomer Nic Pizzolatto, lest he bolt and the network’s reputation as a welcoming haven for top talent take a hit. Netflix and Amazon go further: They openly celebrate their hands-off approaches. Executives at both places have basically said that because they’re not married to the usual commercial television models, they’re letting their talent do … whatever.

“We are not really in the solid outcome business, you know,” Amazon Studios head Roy Price said at an Amazon executive panel at the Television Critics Association press tour recently. “We are not really in the programming business.”

“It’s not the intent to draw the biggest audience from any single show,” Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos said at TCA. “The shows are built and designed and we invest in them based on the audience that we believe the show can attract. And it’s successful if it attracts that audience segment.”

Joe Lewis, Amazon’s comedy chief, said something similar: “I think we are … just looking for shows that are our customers’ favorites.”

That all sounds good, in theory. And in practice, it’s occasionally resulted in wonderful television. Netflix’s “BoJack Horseman” is as weird a concoction as I can think of, but it’s incisive and funny even as it goes to some heartbreaking places. I’m glad that Amazon is betting big on “The Man in the High Castle,” which may supply the smart sci-fi I’ve been searching for. And of course, all of television is a crapshoot; most shows fail, good ones are always hard to make and great ones are always rare.

But these streaming executives are indicating that they think non-interference is the only way to get good shows.

“[W]e built the company on this in this internal culture of freedom and responsibility, and we really did apply that to our showrunners too,” Sarandos said at TCA. “We decided it would be our role not to coach the creatives because it really wasn’t our wheelhouse. It was going to be our role to pick the right projects, pick the right worlds, pick the right talent to run those shows, and then really try to create an environment for them to do the best work of their lives.”

This statement kind of floored me, honestly. If the executives not there to make shows better, what are they there for? Also, can I have an executive job at Netflix? Because I would really like to make a lot of money to not do things. They give many millions to those making their shows, but telling them how to spend that money wisely? LOL, pass.

Of course, some of this is just the kind of chest-thumping tech-exec hyperbole that “Silicon Valley” lampoons so well. And that’s the analogy I’ll stick with: Amazon and Netflix executives don’t seem to consider themselves TV executives, and it may be more useful to think of them as the kinds of guys who run Uber and other boastful, well-funded startups. They hacked television, bro, and they’re going to do it better.

Except … really? They think they’re going to do it better than the kinds of people responsible for the Commercial Television Machine? I mean, maybe someday they will, and if they get to that point, break out the Champagne. But their track record isn’t nearly there yet, and it’s more than a little grating that they’re so dismissive of the kind of TV-making processes that led to the creation of so many good and great shows — the very binge-able content they so eagerly bought up and built their businesses on top of.

And that brings me back to my reaction to Singer’s essay, which boils down to this: Giving people a lot of rope is not necessarily how the best TV gets made. It can produce good results, in the hands of a disciplined professionals who know what to do with that freedom — and what not to do with it. If the discipline, vision and restraint are lacking and are not supplied by the showrunner or by executives, the results are usually ponderous messes (“House of Cards,” “Hand of God,” “Low Winter Sun”).

It’s worth noting that Jill Soloway (“Transparent”) and Jenji Kohan (“Orange Is the New Black”), who created the best shows in the streaming realms, are longtime veterans of the Commercial Television Machine. And all that has happened before has happened again. Long before those shows were a gleam on some site’s server, Ron Moore reinvented “Battlestar Galactica” by taking the best of what he’d learned in a long career as a writer for various “Star Trek” TV series and blowing up the rest. I really wish streaming executives wouldn’t valorize throwing out the baby with the bathwater, at least not until their rosters have more shows like “Transparent” and “OITNB” and “Battlestar Galactica” and fewer sludge piles like “Hand of God” and “Marco Polo.”

Quality control matters in television; look at how USA nurtured “Mr. Robot” into an accessible yet deeply adventurous show, and the showrunners of “The Americans” often talk about how executive input helped the show go from good to great, to name just two examples. And this concept matters even more when you think about the fact that Amazon and Netflix — like many networks — are ramping up their content machines. The efficacy of quality control is partly related to volume, and it’s moderately terrifying that this phenomenon of peak TV could result in 400 primetime scripted shows in 2015 alone.

At TCA, Landgraf said he’s capping the number of shows FX and FXX make.

“I really don’t care how much money a business has to spend. As someone who struggles every day to program good and great television, who still reads nearly every script and watches every rough cut of every episode we program, I believe it’s impossible to maintain quality control with too many shows,” Landgraf said.

His Peak TV speech contained a lot of food for thought, some of which good critics are still chewing on, but he’s right about that. Despite my fears for my sanity, I generally think Peak TV is a good thing — without it, we don’t get weird gems like “Rectify” and “BoJack” and a more diverse array of creators and protagonists. Given how many more shows are being made and how many of them have less experienced or inexperienced showrunners, however, now’s not the time for executives to just let people sink or swim, but signs of floundering are already all over the place. All in all, I am very concerned about whether we’re going to get more good TV, or just more TV.

There are certain kinds of quality control that Netflix and Amazon executives seem amused by or appear to think is unnecessary. And stories of the excesses of overly controlling, uninspired and unhelpful networks executives are not hard to find and easy to mock, but the good ones are also partly responsible for sweetest fruits of the Commercial Television Machine.

Of course, writers, actors and directors are incredibly important when it comes to a show’s quality, but knowing how to shepherd, shape and market a show — these are real and important skills. If you read Difficult Men and The Revolution Was Televised, you’ll come across many instances of writers doing their best to rebel against whatever network strictures had frustrated them in the past. But you’ll also come across TV executives who knew what they were doing and helped birth great shows and unquestionably helped turn those programs into the juggernauts that they became. These are the shows we all binged at some point or want to binge someday — and they didn’t appear by magic.

Covering TV for the past 15 years has taught me that the best shows tend to have two elements embedded in their DNA: Collaboration and tension. I don’t mean conflict, not exactly, which is not unknown on the sets of ambitious shows, of course. Conflict is inevitable when grown people work together on any project for any length of time. But what I’m referring to is the kind of creative tension that exists when people who work together don’t always agree but find ways to let the better and smarter ideas win. Sharp people questioning each other, pushing each other, testing each other and leading each other to epiphanies — those are among the conditions that can lead to great TV, and sometimes those exchanges involve executives who care and know television. They exist, and right about now, I wish there were more of them. Maybe they exist at Amazon and Netflix, but if so, I wish their bosses weren’t so disparaging of the work they were (possibly) hired to do.

Every writer I’ve ever spoken to has told stories about executive notes that were dumb — and notes that were brilliant. Dealing with feedback from an executive — even an executive a creator doesn’t much like — can force a writer to better articulate her vision. Probing questions can lead to stronger and clearer choices and even dumb questions can lead to breakthroughs. As Joss Whedon has said, “It’s very important to know when to stick to your guns, but it’s also very important to listen to absolutely everybody. The stupidest person in the room might have the best idea.”

Who is asking questions these days? How smart or dumb are the ideas under consideration? And is anyone listening? As we head into the uncharted waters of peak TV, those are some of the questions I have.

Kid Is Having A Whole Lotta Trouble Getting This Kitten ‘Situation’ Under Control

This kid has a cat-tastrophe on his hands! Or so he thinks.

A video shared on YouTube features a boy named Ryder from Cedar Falls, Iowa, trying to herd five kittens and getting a tad bit overwhelmed in the cutest way possible. The best part? He calls the little felines “situations.”

Watch as Ryder attempts to gather the kittens to his blanket. But anytime he goes to retrieve a kitten, more follow him, leaving the blanket designated for his furry flock.

“Oh! Now we got some more situations!” the adorable little fella says

Ryder’s mom, Lisa Richter, told The Huffington Post that the original video is much longer and her son actually broke a sweat trying to get all the kittens in one place. It’s OK, Ryder. We really admire your perseverance!

Richter told HuffPost that Ryder won’t have his hands quite so full for long. The kittens, who belong to a friend, are currently under the family’s care and Richter says they’ve decided to adopt two of them. The other three, however, are still looking for homes.

If you’re interested in the art of kitten herding, and would like to provide a forever home for one of the felines, you can reach out to Richter here. Your local shelter also has lots of kittens and cats looking for homes and a loving owner to herd them.

Can’t Control the Weather – A Few Pointers to Keep Those Lo cks Looking Great on the Road

I did a column here last week about keeping our hair looking great in high humidity. We run into that ‘wall of water’ when we land in Miami, for example, or New York City in August … “Oh, man!” Hot and wet!

Part of the solution is that you just have to surrender some of that control. It is so difficult to keep the look you created in L.A. when you step off the plane in Atlanta. Depending on our natural hair, it can go flat and limp or wildly curly and frizzy.

Still, “be prepared,” pack your hair tools, favorite products and hair accessories along with a healthy dose of flexibility.

I recently traveled and forgot my conditioner and thought, “no big deal. How bad could hotel products be?” Well, they can be harsh on hair and, “yes,” they smell absolutely delicious and they suds-up like none other but be careful. Sometimes products with suds use a lot of sulfates, which can be hard on hair, especially if your hair has been chemically treated for a perm or coloring.

• My suggestion is to take travel-size products with you from home. Go to your favorite drug store and buy the small, plastic, airplane-approved, 3.4 oz. bottles and put your trusted products in them.

• When you head for another city, always pack a selection of hair accessories, including barrettes, which are trending strong, and ponytail holds and favorite hair clips. These are incredibly useful in taming hair when you’ve already tried hair mousse and gels. The variety of styles and availability is better than ever. Ponytails, buns and other updos work in virtually every environment from the boardroom to the gym. When you hit that wave of high humidity, a ponytail is a great way to go in a slick-back wet look.

• Humidity and free bath samples aren’t the only risks when traveling. Water is different everywhere. Some is soft and some is hard with lots of minerals. Those minerals can leave deposits on your hair, changing the texture or feel. Using your quality products from home can help this a lot. When you get home, detox your hair, wash it with a clarifying shampoo or a mix of baking soda and water. This will strip the hair of mineral build-up. Then apply a deep, penetrating mask or deep conditioner and let it sit on your hair for a good amount of time … Your hair will love you for it!

Remember, you can’t beat the weather, and you don’t pick the water coming out of the shower, so be flexible and patient out of town.

As always, be open to change!

News in Brief: Fresca Quietly Takes Control Of 18-34 Demographic In Daring Overnight Raid

ATLANTA—In a bold and highly coordinated predawn raid that has taken the marketing world by surprise, soft-drink brand Fresca reportedly seized control of the strategically valuable 18-to-34-year-old demographic early Tuesday. “At 0115 hours this morning, Fresca operatives forcibly took command of 97 percent of the nation’s most vital consumer segment,” said Fresca spokesperson April Flansberg, describing to reporters how strike units were deployed in cities throughout the country to overtake key strongholds formerly held by Apple, Timberland, Uber, and Pinkberry, among others. “They are all loyal to us now. By sundown, we will have secured the entire millennial demographic and ensured that Fresca is the number-one beverage choice of college students, recent graduates, and young professionals in both hip urban neighborhoods and affluent suburban areas.” Analysts described the campaign as the most audacious operation since 2013, when SodaStream captured young white couples with combined incomes between $ 90,000 …

In The Future, You Could Control Your Shoes’ Color With Your Phone

Black sneaker not really gelling with your outfit? Pop open an app on your smartphone and add a streak of yellow.

+rehabstudio, a company that makes innovative marketing campaigns, recently unveiled its concept for the “Shift Sneaker,” a shoe comprised of material that can communicate with your smartphone and shift colors on demand.

A look at how the Shift Sneaker would work. (Source: +rehabstudio)

“Shift Sneaker explores what might be possible in the near future based on various existing materials, which currently only have industrial applications, and forecasted materials like phase change fibres and meta-materials, which are still to be made,” Mike Veitch, Managing Partner at +rehabstudio, told The Huffington Post via email.

In theory, there are a lot of clever applications for a smart shoe that could change colors on a dime. +rehabstudio posted a few ideas on its website: You could take a selfie to automatically swap the color of your shoes to match your clothing; a “running pack” could make the sneakers glow different colors depending on whether or not you’re on pace; a “cycling pack” would keep folks safe at night with bright, glowing colors.

Don’t get too excited, though. The sneakers are still very much a theoretical concept. You won’t see them until phase-change fibers and meta-materials are actually manufacturable for consumer products, Veitch said. But when that happens, he imagines these high-tech kicks might cost about as much as an average shoe — and generate more money from color packs on your smartphone, of course.

For now, wearable technology like the Apple Watch or Android Wear smartwatches might represent the best opportunity for chameleonic fashion. The DressWatch app lets you snap a picture of your clothes and change your smartwatch’s face to match the color palette, for example.

And “adaptive” surfaces might soon crop up in the world around you. Veitch told HuffPost that +rehabstudio is currently making smart storefronts a reality, meaning you could get a personalized experience the moment you walk past a shop window. Neat!

Kourtney Kardashian Posts Gun Range Photo After Kim Calls For Gun Control

Here’s some fun sibling rivalry for you. The day after Kim Kardashian called for more gun control, her sister Kourtney went and posted a photo of herself at a shooting range.

Don't mess.

A photo posted by Kourtney Kardashian (@kourtneykardash) on

Kourtney captioned the photo, “Don’t mess,” and it’s hard to tell if the message was meant for Kim, though the timing is certainly strange. What’s more is that it’s not even a new photo, as Gossip Cop pointed out.

It’s actually a screenshot from a 2007 episode of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” where Kris Jenner brought Kourtney, Khloe and Kim to the shooting range for target practice. On the episode, Kim was nervous about shooting guns, but suddenly felt “empowered” once she started accessorizing with safety gear. The episode later showed her learning to shoot a massive assault rifle.

The subject of the purchase of guns has been a plot point on the family’s reality show several times throughout the series. And while Kim also spoke out when her stepparent Caitlyn Jenner decided to buy a gun for protection on a 2013 episode after the family members were the victims of a swatting prank, Kourtney’s throwback Instagram certainly strikes as a little shady.

Mind Control for Fun and Profit

As one of the few men who can fake a sexual orgasm, I admit to having no problem with improvisation, fabrication or outright deceit. In truth, isn’t the Art of Deception a big part of life? Indeed, isn’t being lied to by men and women with openly sincere faces — men and women who promise to be honest with us — the very foundation of our political system?

And in the world of commerce, don’t most advertisements — particularly TV commercials –exaggerate, overstate and misrepresent the virtues of their products? That’s why the time-honored dictum of “Buyer beware!” resonates with us. Not everything we hear in an advertisement is going to be true. In fact, most of it is going to be intentionally misleading.

But I draw the line at subliminal advertising. Why? Because subliminal advertising, by definition, is insidious and sneaky. It’s one thing for, say, a wrinkle-removing cream to boldly claim to remove facial wrinkles (when it actually can’t and won’t), but it’s a whole other deal for that wrinkle commercial to sneak in an image for a mere one-hundredth of a second that is intended to implant in our brain a negative response to a competitor. An image designed to have us scorn a competing wrinkle cream.

What if a Pepsi commercial were to flash, for one-hundredth of a second, an image of a horribly disfigured person drinking a can of Coke? An image so grotesque that our brains register a profoundly negative reaction to Coke. Mind you, that image isn’t on the screen long enough to be noticed by the conscious mind, but it’s there long enough to be noticed by the unconscious mind, hence the term “subliminal.”

If Pepsi had flashed that image enough times during the Super Bowl, they might have gotten the results they were seeking. With a reported 114 million people having watched the game, if even one-percent of the audience were to “get” the message, it would mean that more than a million people might possibly stop drinking Coca-Cola and switch over to Pepsi.

The reason I mention this is because I think I may have been exposed to one of those subliminal ads. Prior to the Super Bowl, one of my favorite snack foods was pork rinds. Prior to the Super Bowl I positively loved pork rinds. I couldn’t get enough of them. But after watching the game, I found myself becoming nauseated at the very thought of them.

Clearly, something happened to me during those three and a half hours. Pork rinds not only no longer appeal to me, they have lost their meaning. They make no sense to me. Is it possible that a competing chip manufacturer had run some ads during that game, ones intended to subliminally turn me against pork rinds? I’ll have to do some research.

Julia Gilliland has always been interested in the natural world around her. She particularly enjoys her outings to the cavern near her father's homestead, where she explores for fossils and formations, and plans to write a book about her discoveries. The cave seems plenty safe–until the day a mysterious intruder steals the rope she uses to find her way out. Rafe Kincaid has spent years keeping his family's cattle ranch going, all without help from his two younger brothers, who fled the ranch–and Rafe's controlling ways–as soon as they were able. He's haunted by one terrible day at the cave on a far-flung corner of the Kincaid property, a day that changed his life forever. Ready to put the past behind him, he plans to visit the cave one final time. He sure doesn't expect to find a young woman trapped in one of the tunnels–or to be forced to kiss her!  Rafe is more intrigued by Julia than any woman he's ever known, but how can he overlook her fascination with the cave he despises? And when his developing relationship with Julia threatens his chance at reconciliation with his brothers, will he be forced to choose between the family bonds that could restore his trust and the love that could heal his heart?

Lena Dunham Asks Why People Use Birth Control, World Learns Critical Lesson

As the White House took steps to accommodate religious nonprofits wanting to opt out of contraception coverage, HBO’s “Girls” creator Lena Dunham took to Twitter Tuesday evening with a simple question:

The Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby ruling last month dealt a major blow to birth control coverage. At the time, Dunham tweeted her stance that “Women’s access to birth control should not be denied because of their employer’s religious beliefs.” Last week, Eden Foods’ CEO revived a case to deny coverage of all birth control from employees’ healthcare plans.

Within minutes of Dunham’s tweet, both women and men were sharing the many reasons, from health concerns to family planning, that birth control is important to them:

Dunham concluded by thanking the “brave women and sensitive men” and encouraging readers to follow the Planned Parenthood Action Fund to learn more. And then, in typical quirky Dunham fashion, she added:
