The Coolest Military-Inspired Looks of Fall 2018

You no longer need to choose between fashion and function this fall.

That’s because the world’s most stylish brands now offer great-looking threads that are as attractive as they are rugged and durable. Take this warm technical parker from Hugo Boss (above, $ 845; hugoboss.com). Its sleek all-navy look is cool enough for city streets but it’s also made from a polyamide fabric that won’t crease or tear if you brush up against a few sharp corners in the great outdoors.

You’ll Want to Wear These Rugged Work Boots Every Day

Here are some more standout fall pieces that embrace the best of both worlds.

Fall style trends

The ballistic nylon in this Burton Tinder Tote ($ 71.95, amazon.com) and the Fyre Scout Boot ($ 258, thefyrecompany.com) might not have met the bullet-blocking standard its WWII-era creators wanted, but it’s damned good at resisting everyday wear and tear.

The same goes for the cotton-polyamide blend in Belstaff’s Burfield Park shearling-lined parka ($ 1,895, belstaff.com).

Tokyo’s Coolest Boutique Is Hidden Behind a Love Hotel

TOKYO — Shinjuku red light district Kabukicho has not historically been at the crossroads of high fashion.
That reputation is now being tested. Located behind a love hotel is select shop The Four Eyed, which has set Charles Jeffrey, Y/Project and Martine Rose upon an area regarded for its swarm of hostess clubs and Yakuza enclaves.
Former Fruits magazine photographer Keisuke Fujita opened the boutique in 2016 with the aim to energize Tokyo’s fashion scene. Fujita and shop creative director Maiko Shibukawa hope to push the city’s aesthetic needle past its “stale” cutesy reputation and toward a new, thoughtful era.
“There are no places like this in the area — it’s kind of a weird location, but that’s what is good about it,” Shibukawa said. “We are really anti-kawaii [cute] style, we didn’t want to become one of the Harajuku stores. It’s one of our challenges — to change Tokyo’s mainstream fashion. It has always been about kawaii for the last 20 years of Tokyo fashion.”
Kabukicho’s cheap rents enable Shibukawa to select eclectic merchandise that is not particularly driven by sales. “I pick what I like,” she said. Shoppers can find a hodgepodge of vintage shoes, zines, Mauricio Stein sunglasses and Mimi Wade T-shirts

How to Wear Indigo, the Coolest Color You Can Get Right Now

Brands are going back to basics and using genuine indigo dyes for a colorful look that improves with age. As clothes have become less expensive and demand for denim has grown, synthetic blue dyes have almost overtaken the 6,000-year-old practice of using natural indigo. But designers are rediscovering the nuances of this plant-based pigment. It doesn’t just produce the deep, dark shade applied to selvedge jeans and pieces like Raleigh Denim Workshop’s striped chore coat: When aged properly, the living colorant can produce the palest shades of sky blue, seen here on Faherty’s striped T-shirt and Levi’s Made & Crafted’s soft, light Henley.

How Fall’s Coolest Boot Collaboration Was Inspired by the Great Outdoors

It’s hard to grow up in California and not develop a love for the great outdoors. No matter what part of the Golden State you live in, you’re generally only two hours away from a completely different climate experience, whether it’s the sandy shores of Huntington Beach, the snowy slopes of Big Bear, or the sunny countryside in Ojai. And fashion designer Phillip Lim, who’s from a town in Orange County called Westminster, can remember wearing UGG boots in all three places.

Meet Jerry Lorenzo, the Man Behind L.A.’s Coolest Menswear: Just Ask Rihanna and Bieber

fear of god brand

“It’s just humbling,” says the soft-spoken Jerry Lorenzo via phone, about the rapid success of his menswear label, Fear of God. The line, whose latest offering is available for preorder starting November 1, might only be four collections deep, but it already counts stylish A-listers—including Kanye and Kim Kardashian West, David Beckham, and Justin Bieber—as fans. “I essentially started to go to downtown Los Angeles to make pieces that were missing from my closet,” he says. “Selfishly, so I could look cooler.”

That approach seems to be paying off: Many of his signature jeans and plaid shirts sell out within weeks of posting on the brand’s website. Citing the style of basketball star Allen Iverson and grunge legend Kurt Cobain as his two main influences, Lorenzo attributes the popularity of the line to a foundation of the most essential items in an everyday wardrobe. “Nothing of what I’m doing is anything that hasn’t been seen before,” he says. “It’s sweatshirts, it’s bombers, it’s a dad shirt. It’s classic American menswear with my take on it.”

Using the imagery of iconic American rock bands as a starting point, his vintage-inspired band tees have that evergreen cool factor, too, and have been spotted on the likes of Justin Bieber and David Beckham—which only makes sense, given that the brand’s name sounds like it was swiped from the lineup of an alt-rock music festival. “I’m not a graphic artist. For me the best version of a graphic tee is a vintage band tee,” Lorenzo says. “It’s the fact that when you wear it, it might spark a conversation with some 40-year-old fan of Metallica that you bump into in the grocery store.”

It doesn’t hurt that some high-profile women in music have shown interest in the label, as well, including a certain bootylicious superstar. “I had to pause and screenshot Beyoncé when she wore the Fear of God thermals in the video for ‘7/11,’ ” he says. “That was one of the most awesome things.” Lorenzo says his focus is strictly on menswear for now, but who knows— perhaps a Fear of Goddess women’s line is on the horizon.

The Coolest Kids in Paris Don’t Have to Try Too Hard to Look Good

Paul Hameline

Away from the bolder-is-better statement looks of Paris Fashion Week exists a street style with a quieter edge—one that the native, baby-faced club kids preternaturally possess. Photographer Pierre-Ange Carlotti turned his lens on them recently, capturing their perfectly lived-in denim, distressed sneakers, threadbare tees, and oh-so-casually tossed-on outerwear, a uniform that lends itself to late-night antics and dancing until dawn. These stylish Parisians—designer Simon Porte Jacquemus among them—reveal the stylized collision of fashion, music, and androgyny in the City of Light.

The Casting at Vetements Included Russia’s Coolest Streetwear Designer

Gosha Rubchinsky

A designer walking another designer’s show? That’s what we’d call a very creative casting call, and it happened today on the Vetements runway in Paris. Dressed in a reworked DHL tee, cropped leather trousers, a black short-sleeved button-up, and a pair of chunky boots, the opening model was none other than Russian streetwear wunderkind designer Gosha Rubchinskiy.

Rubchinskiy, who hails from Moscow, is known for his nostalgic post-Soviet riffs on the Russian free market of the ’90s. His introduction of sweatshirts with Tommy Hilfiger–type logos captioned with Cyrillic script and throwback high-waisted denim jeans fastened with shoelaces have made him a cult favorite on the country’s underground fashion scene—and a fitting poster child for the deconstructed, plucked-from-the-bazaar look of Vetements clothes.

And it only makes sense that he be part of the extended Vetements family, given that Demna Gvasalia, one of the designers in the Parisian fashion collective, is from ex-Soviet Georgia. As it happens, Rubchinskiy’s friend Lotta Volkova Adam, a native of Vladivostok, Russia, and a stylist for the label, closed the show in a floor-sweeping coat, leather cuissardes, and a thigh-grazing mini denim skirt—a very exciting new union of cool kids, indeed.

How Eckhaus Latta Selected New York Fashion Week’s Coolest Cast

eckhaus latta casting

Striking the right balance with casting is a difficult thing to do, but season after season, Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta of Eckhaus Latta and their eclectic lineup of muses and traditional models manage to nail it. This season included art scene fixtures like Juliana Huxtable and musicians like Dev Hynes, and above all there was the sense that the wearer is as important as the garment itself. Backstage at the Spring show, seasoned modeling vets like Cole Mohr and Zhenya Katava mingled with newcomers like Latta’s godfather Bart and indie actress India Salvor Menuez. The mix of ages, races, genders, and careers paths provided a welcome message of inclusive universality. We caught up with the designers—who cast the show themselves—to hear a bit about their casting process, as well as the benefits to filling their runway with friends, family, and other “nodels,” their term for those they have coaxed onto the catwalk.

What was the mood you were trying to create with this casting?
MIKE ECKHAUS: It’s always this kind of community that we like to build on—whether it’s really close friends, people we admire, or people who are doing work that we appreciate—that always helps to determine the casting structure. We’ve always liked the combination of working with industry models and “nodels”—friends and peers. I think it creates a more dynamic texture and quality to the clothing.

ZOE LATTA: It also helps to see the clothing on bodies and people who feel really confident and wear clothing really well, but it’s not about a singular ideal of body type. It really goes back to the wearer and what they bring to each look.

Are there any unexpected benefits to having non-models in the mix?
ME: Having both models and nodels allows everyone to stand out and be highlighted in their own right. It doesn’t feel like “here’s the same idea” over and over again. The models pop, the nodels pop, and it feels very whole.

Often your shows involve a performance aspect, but this season you went for a straightforward show. Why is that?
ZL: We were so honored to be able to use this space [Ralph Pucci International], and we worked hard on this collection, so we were excited to see the accessories and all the details. We thought adding more wouldn’t do anything for the collection, so we wanted to focus on the clothes.

Many of the people you’ve featured on Eckhaus’s runway—Hari Nef, Willy Cartier, et cetera—have gone on to big things. Who from this season should we be looking out for?
ZL: It’s funny, we never cast based on who we think will do well. This cast includes my godfather, some older friends from Los Angeles—we don’t choose based on who will become well known. As for who to watch, I would say the entire cast. Each of them brings something special.

ME: It’s interesting to see all of our careers growing together—now some of the nodels have to call their agents before they do the show, which is fun. Seeing them succeed is great. Suddenly we’re speaking with the biggest agents at Ford and IMG about people we’ve known for years.

Tony Gum Might Be the Coolest Girl in Cape Town

Tony Gum south africa guide

In this digital age of the World Wide Woman (WWW), wherein an Instagram feed of a stylish stranger located on the other side of the planet is as transportive as unused frequent flyer miles, there is simply no dearth of beguiling international cool girls to discover and fall for.

Hence, why we poured over the timeline of South African style maven, Tony Gum. A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Gum maintains a highly curated page that reads, well, just as her bio decrees: “like a Wes Anderson palette” featuring her and her circle of equally creative friends.

Awash with pastels and dashes of bold American sportswear, the twenty-year-old makes references as disparate as the 1978 cult Jamaican movie Rockers and the New York Yankees with her personal style and artwork which often overlap. The aspiring photographer and model reimagines the very notion of branding with tongue-in-cheek flair; her “Coca Cola” series, for example, reconfigures the signature red flame bottles as everything from a headdress to a hotdog.

Here, she reveals her style influences, her favorite local shopping haunts, and what’s trending in Cape Town right now.

She’s a big fan of Marni and South African designers, alike:

I’m in love with Consuelo Castiglioni designs [for Marni]; Celeste Arendse’s line, Selfi; and South African designer, Anees Petersen’s label, Young and Lazy.

My favorite local stores have to be the Corner Store CPT, Superbalist, and Merchants on Long, which stocks another favorite, MaXhosa by Laduma.

Wes Anderson nerds, Jamaican Rastafarians, and Tim Burton outcasts give her plenty of style cues:

I’m inspired by [director, Wes Anderson’s] choice of color, specifically in The Grand Budapest Hotel. My favorite movie moment comes from [Edward Scissorhands in] Tim Burton’s suburbia scene, when Edward Scissorhands and his mother drive through the highly stylized neighborhood. In both of these films, these incredible directors have made my love for pastel grow fonder. Rockers is [also] so brilliant! It’s a 1978 Jamaican film by Theodoros Bafaloukos that I discovered on Instagram.

Reworking classic branded advertisements for present times has become her calling card:

Adidas is a classic brand that I’ve come to admire from a young age. I still remember how cool my brothers used to look pairing their Adidas sandals with their Adidas socks. I guess I have a thing for timeless brands and how they reenvision their advertisements.

Cape Town’s fashion and youth culture is brimming over with possibilities:

Almost everybody in Cape Town wants to be unique and there are many subcultures such as hip-hop heads, Pantsula devotees, hippies, grunge, dapper folks, etc. . . . Influences and microtrends of the diverse divisions are represented through accessories like bucket hats, unisex wide-brim hats, facial piercings, layered bracelets, and big bags.

Cape Town’s coolest hangouts from the city’s It girl:

Yourstruly café is a charming hotspot for a lunch/dinner out or even a coffee date. A lifestyle district situated in Cape Town, Kloof Street specializes in gourmet food, homemade pizza, coffee, and fine art. The Waiting Room would be your best bet to spend your Friday night out filled with groovy music and good hip-hop to accompany the soul—it’s so swell.

First Thursday is an occasion to browse galleries till 9:00 p.m. and wander the city center. Basically, it’s a gateway to the works of fine artists as well as a social event for charismatic creatives.

Australian Family Rescues Abandoned Baby Magpie, Now Has The Coolest Pet Ever

In late 2013, 10-year-old Noah Bloom found a deserted magpie chick in a New South Wales suburb. After taking her home and giving her a towel as a bed, the Blooms called a veterinarian friend of the family for advice. They could hand the bird over to an authority, but, being young and abandoned by other magpies, they were told she’d probably be put down. So the Blooms bought some baby bird feed, gave her a name — “Penguin” — and raised her themselves.

Oh, and they set up an Instagram account, which has so far attracted over 27,000 followers.

A photo posted by Penguin Bloom (@penguinthemagpie) on

Since then, Penguin has become like family to husband-and-wife Cameron and Sam Bloom, along with their sons Reuben, Noah and Oli. They set her outside at night to sleep on a branch or in the eaves, but say that she’s good at sneaking back into the house through an open door or window. Cameron Bloom told The Huffington Post she’ll often curl into bed with one of the kids, or sleep below a painting of herself that Sam had created.

Seriously need my own headphones.

A photo posted by Penguin Bloom (@penguinthemagpie) on

Magpies have been known to make unusual friends — which is good for Penguin since most of the wild magpies around the Blooms’ house like to bully and peck at her. She’s not a pushover, though. While Penguin gets along well with the Blooms and their young sons’ friends, certain guests might be greeted with a threatening peck. But Penguin the magpie is probably the world’s least terrifying guard dog bird.

The birds are also remarkably good at mimicking sounds around them — YouTube has plenty of examples. Penguin has learned to copy some meowing noises the Bloom boys make at her, as a game.

She’s talented, too, at maneuvering around the house. Cameron, a professional photographer, has snapped many pictures of her just chilling out on someone’s foot or head.

“What she does is she’ll hop,” Cameron told HuffPost. “She’ll hop up the chair, then the table, until she’s sitting on your head. It’s sort of a progression.”

See below for more photos of Penguin — whose name was given by Noah, thinking, of course, that she looked kind of like a penguin.

An Illustrated Guide to Oslo, Courtesy of Norway’s Coolest Design Firm Snøhetta

Illustration: Henrik Haugan

Snøhetta deserves at least some of the credit for the world’s ongoing obsession with modern Scandinavian design. In the past few years, this Oslo-based design and architecture firm has made everything from the angular glass pavilion for New York City’s National September 11 Memorial & Museumn to the pixelated landscapes on Norway’s updated banknotes. The firm’s aesthetic is bold yet sleek, intellectual, and at times slightly odd. That eclectic mix makes Snøhetta’s designers perfect guides to Norway’s capital. Here, in words and pictures, they share their favorite things to do in Oslo—a list that includes river hikes and a jazz-punk band that promises to “fuck up your Monday.” (The band performs only on Sundays.) Check out all of Snøhetta’s selections below.
