From Digital Design to Upcycling: Meet the Students Pushing for More Sustainability in Fashion

Amber Slooten, Amsterdam Fashion Institute (Netherlands)
Amber Slooten graduated from AMFI in 2016 with a minor in Hypercraft, the school’s virtual design section, which was launched 10 years ago. During a gap year spent at MediaLab, a division of the Amsterdam University of Applied Science, she discovered a virtual design software named CLO3D: alongside game designers, interior designers and fashion branders, Slooten created a virtual reality fashion show named SecondSight, to be watched on mobile phones using 3-D glasses.
The project lead her to reconsider her design practice at AMFI. “We were creating so many clothes, I was forever dragging all these different collections on my bike for each project, and when the project was over they would just sit in my closet,” remembered Slooten. The student pushed her teachers to allow her to present an entirely digital graduate collection, projected via holographic layers onto a dancer, and ended up teaching a course helping students to use the CLO3D software. Since Slooten’s digital project, a number of other students were able to graduate without producing a physical collection of clothes, effectively changing the fashion school’s assessment methods.

Amber Slooten’s graduate collection at AMFI was presented in holographic form.

Louis Vuitton Partners With Moda Operandi’s Santo Domingo on Digital Film

Louis Vuitton and Lauren Santo Domingo, cofounder and chief brand officer of Moda Operandi, are collaborating on a digital film showcasing the French house’s iconic Capucines bags.
The editorial short film follows Santo Domingo through her day in New York, highlighting the versatility of the Capucines. It shows her working on her computer and sipping coffee on her terrace, commuting to work and hailing a cab, making decisions about fabric swatches, going to a restaurant for lunch and dressing up and going out at night — each time wearing a different Capucines bag. Seven bags are featured. She’s also dressed in Louis Vuitton pre-fall 2019.
This is the first time Santo Domingo has partnered with a fashion house on a campaign.
Moda Operandi clients and their personal stylists will have direct access to Louis Vuitton sales teams to purchase the Capucines bags. The retail price of the bags range from $ 4,750 to $ 7,450.

Salvatore Ferragamo Taps International Influencers for Digital Initiative

INSTA-CLICK: Salvatore Ferragamo is putting the focus on one of its key symbols, the Gancini double-hook fastening, celebrated by the brand’s women’s creative director Paul Andrew with a new overall pattern and a digital campaign, debuting on Thursday.
In particular, the Florentine fashion house tapped Bryanboy to direct a series of short movies, which explore with humor the joy and sorrow of the digital lives of several international influencers, including Bryanboy himself; Caro Daur; the duo behind Diet Prada Tony Liu and Lindsey Schuyler; Tamu McPherson; Pelayo Díaz; Aureta; Susie Bubble, and Carlo Sestini.
Lensed in different moments of their lives, all the protagonists sport ready-to-wear pieces and accessories showing the new Gancini pattern, first introduced with the resort 2019 collection.
“As a designer, I appreciate the innate elegance of the Gancini’s refined simplicity and the sensuality of its form. Another aspect is its duality: two clasps that connect and hold together,” said Andrew. “The beauty of the Gancini shape is something I’ve worked to emphasize and enrich through the creation of this new Salvatore Ferragamo Gancini monogram.”
The short movies will be available across all the Salvatore Ferragamo digital platforms.

Allergan’s New Digital Hub on Self-Care Content

SPOTLYTE ON SELF-CARE: “Consumers want high-quality products and are willing to invest to get their desired outcomes,” said Alexandra Wilkis Wilson, a cofounder of Gilt Groupe and now the senior vice president of consumer strategy and innovation at Allergan.
Wilkis Wilson joined Allergan in February. She’s been focused on identifying emerging beauty trends and how consumers are engaging with the medical aesthetics category. “Millennials want physical products and care about the experience. They are open to spending on self-care, such as blowout services or a massage on demand,” she said. Wilkis Wilson should know — she also was the former chief executive officer of Glamsquad, an on-demand beauty service.
She’s been working on a project called Moonwalker, a three-part overarching digital venture for Allergan, the maker of Botox Cosmetic. First up is an informational site called Spotlyte that’s going live on Wednesday. According to Wilkis Wilson, the core goal of the site is to “enable information flow and access.” The site is brand agnostic, and there’s no mention of even Allergan’s own line of fillers. She also said more consumers are turning to online research before making their purchases.
“Around 40 million people are considering a variety of medical-aesthetic treatments, such as facials, body

‘Swiped’ matches digital hookups with unforeseen consequences

HBO’s latest documentary actually owes a debt to science fiction, and the unintended consequences associated with unleashing forces beyond our control. In the case of “Swiped: Hooking Up in the Digital Age,” the monster is the corrosive effects of dating apps that have rapidly led society into uncharted territory — what one expert calls “evolutionary unprecedented waters.”

*Record Scratch* : Vinyl and CDs Outselling Digital Music Downloads

Vinyl records market in Gdansk

Source: NurPhoto / Getty

Here is some news that is honestly shocking to hear right now. Digital music has been outselling physical formats since 2012, then streaming came around and is now king.

According to a report from Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), digital downloads are now dead last in sales compared to CDs and vinyl and other forms of physical media.

CDs and vinyl aren’t dead yet.

The report points to digital music’s drastic 25% drop in revenue to $ 1.3 billion in 2017 allowing CDs and vinyl to go back on top of non-streaming formats. All this despite physical shipments dropping 4% and reports of retailers such as Best Buy leaning towards not stocking CDs and vinyl anymore. Streaming isn’t losing its spot at the top no time soon though accounting for almost two-thirds of the US music industry revenue in 2017.

A new streaming service called “limited tier” such as Pandora Plus and Amazon Unlimited Prime are slowly on the rise account for 14 percent of the music streaming market. It was 11 percent in the previous year so expect that number to continually rise.Despite some complaints, the US music industry as a whole is doing very well. Boasting impressive wholesale revenues of $ 1.1 billion and $ 2 billion in retail. Digital accounts for 14 percent of total music industry revenue and physical bringing in an impressive 17 percent.

In their report, the RIAA points out the vinyl is still cool among music fans and is  “a bright spot among physical formats,”. The world hasn’t given up on physical formats yet despite popular belief.

What to Watch: Ralph Lauren’s 2018 Game Plan Focuses on China, Digital and Wholesale Improvements

As Ralph Lauren Corp. prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary this year, the company continues to make progress on its turnaround plan.
Under chief executive officer Patrice Louvet, who joined from Procter & Gamble in July, China remains a top priority. The company looks to build its Chinese business, which represents the most significant geographic growth opportunity for the brand. Other major initiatives this year include further developing its new e-commerce platform; evolving the product; increasing the marketing spend significantly to tell the brand’s story and appeal to a new generation of consumers, and growing its international presence.
In its most recent quarter ended Sept. 30, Lauren posted net income of $ 143.8 million on net revenues of $ 1.66 billion. In disclosing second-quarter results in November, Louvet said the focus on driving “efficiencies” will continue through the rest of the [fiscal] year,” and “we are on track to deliver our full-year targets.”
Over the past two years, Lauren has elevated the brand in Asia and built a strong foundation there by improving quality of sales and overall profitability, Louvet told analysts during November’s call. Interestingly, only 13 percent of the company’s overall business is conducted in the region.
In fiscal 2017, the company generated about

Digital Download: Chriselle Lim, the Superinfluencers’ Outlier

Chriselle Lim reportedly walked away from more than $ 1 million to be a brand ambassador for a leading global beauty brand.
When reached for comment, Lim confirmed the above but declined to reveal which company approached her with the offer. An industry source told WWD the brand was L’Oréal Paris, which in 2015 signed Kristina Bazan as an “online ambassador.” (It was the first seven-figure influencer deal, which a year later turned into a traditional ambassadorship with Bazan’s terms renegotiated and her fee raised.) L’Oréal Paris could not be reached for comment on the rumors about Lim or the terms of Bazan’s deal.
During a new era online, where bloggers’ stars are rising and the top tier is vying for coveted brand ambassadorships with big names commanding rates that now start at $ 500,000, Lim could have secured the single most lucrative deal between a brand and influencer.
But she had her reasons for turning down the deal.
“We walked away because it did not fit my brand, and I didn’t feel OK being the brand ambassador or spokesperson because it would make us exclusive with the category. It wasn’t right for me to sign that contract. It would have changed a lot of things

Beginning Oct. 1, shoppers can log on to watchhungerstop.com to create a digital T-shirt design that will solely live on the Web. For each digital T-shirt uploaded to the site, Michael Kors will donate 50 school meals. The company aims to reach 1 million donated meals by the end of October.
For those looking for a more tangible momento, the brand has also designed a limited-edition timepiece collection surrounding the initiative. The new model, called the Bradshaw 100, has been created in black and gold-tone iterations. Priced at $ 295, the watch style comes engraved with “Watch Hunger Stop” on its back. For each watch purchase, Michael Kors plans to donate $ 25 to Watch Hunger Stop’s partner, the United Nations World Food Programme.

In the digital music age, the tape is making a comeback

The art of the mix tape might not be dead after all. In the era of on-demand digital music, business is booming for one of the last companies to actually make cassette tapes. National Audio Company, the largest of the handful of companies still making audio cassettes, was founded in 1969 in Springfield, Missouri and began producing cassettes in 1980. Despite producing a product whose technology has been thought of as obsolete for several decades, NAC sold upwards of 10 million tapes in 2014 and their profits are up 20 percent. Steve Stepp, the president of the company, which bills itself as “The Great American Cassette Company,” credits their success to the power of nostalgia. "You might think it's the older demographic powering this," Stepp said. "But it's not. It's the under 35 age group. They grew up listening to MP3s on earbuds and thought that's what music sounded like. "Then they listened to their grandpa's vinyl LPs or cassette tapes and that group has now decided that's what music should sound like, and the art is important on the packages as well. We have a very loyal audience. They experienced digital and now they have experienced analogue."NAC’s production lines are full of still-functional machines built in the 70s, a nostalgic technology made by other nostalgic technology.70 percent of their annual product—and this may be the most surprising thing of all—is recorded music cassettes produced for large companies like Sony and Universal, as well as smaller contracts with indie labels, who favor tape for its “warm, analogue sound.” Only 30 percent are blank tapes. Cassette tapes debuted over 50 years ago, in 1963. About five years ago, Stepp told the Daily Dot, interest in tapes picked up again. This followed a downturn in demand that began in about 1995 with the apparent triumph of CDs. In that trough between the downturn and the uptick, NAC had gone around the country buying up the machinery that made the tapes, as duplication houses and record labels turned their backs. In the event that you might think this a quick, hipster-driven bubble, there is one aspect of the new cassette culture that indicates it is not. In around 2010, indie label heads told Stepp they were having to go out to garage sales to find tape decks that allowed them to play the tapes they liked. So Stepp approached Tascam TEAC, the one time 600 pound gorilla of tape deck manufacturing, and asked them if they would retool their line and start building decks again. They initially had no interest, but last year that is excatly what they began to do. "They're not going to do that for a six month phenomenon," said Stepp. "We are acting as distributors for them and we are selling them as fast as we can get them in, by the pallette!"Convenience dictates much of our technology use. Who wants to have to stick around home waiting for a phone call—or rely on a clumsy machine to take messages—when we have phones verging on full computers that ride in a pocket? But music is not something we have to do, it’s something we get to do. And sometimes tactility connects us further to the art we consume. H/T Boing Boing | Photo by jDevaun/flickr (CC BY-ND 2.0)

Digital Distraction Syndrome

When I was a kid I couldn’t concentrate on homework while music was playing. The music was a distraction.

Today I often need to put on headphones and play loud music in order to concentrate on work.

What changed? Was it me?

Here’s another data point, still in anecdotal territory, obviously. My stepson fought like a wounded badger for the right to play music while doing homework. He insisted it helped him concentrate, as it does for me as an adult. But his mom and I argued that music was a distraction to learning.

We might have been wrong.

My hypothesis, subject to your sage review, is that the baseline stimulation of normal life has become a higher distraction than loud music blaring in both ears. Music once created a distraction in a quiet world. Now music creates a bit of a buffer from the baseline circus of your normal existence. And in this context I do not mean the noise of the outside world so much as the mental distraction of simply knowing you might have a message if only you looked. Stuff like that.

Music is somewhat predictable, especially for familiar songs, and it soon blends into the background of your mind, creating (in my experience) a sort of force field that keeps away the outside world. It is a defense against the distractions the world has inserted in your mind.

It goes without saying that our digital devices are both awesome in function and distracting in nature. No one wants to return to pre-digital days. But we do need to be conscious of the entire impact of our new tech, not just the shiny bits.

At the risk of being an alarmist, I’m going to go on record as saying Digital Distraction Syndrome (my name for it) is among the biggest health threats in the industrial world. The distractions of the digital age increase our stress, and stress makes us sick and crazy.

90% of the adults I know are on drugs because of what they think is the normal stress of life. Here I am counting the doctor-prescribed meds, the binge-drinking on weekends, the medical marijuana, porn, tobacco, wine before dinner, or even the exercise addiction that gooses the body to release feel-good chemistry.

How’d we get here?

Our largest and most important tech companies are literally in the business of distracting you with their advertisements and their apps. They design their products to maximize distraction, not efficiency, because your distraction is their profit. Distractions make you less effective, which makes you more stressed, which kicks the hell out of your general health. Then you die.

In other words, our most important technology companies are killing you.

For money.

Like the tobacco companies.

Is that comparison too extreme? According to the CDC, smoking will cause one person out of 13 in my country to die prematurely. Stress will probably get one-third of us, but we will label those deaths with whatever symptoms the doctor saw last, such as cardiovascular disease.

Our digital distractions are not the sole cause of our stress. But my best guess is that it accounts for about half of it in this day and age.

The tech companies’ defense (one assumes) is that no one is forcing you to do anything, and the risks and benefits are fully disclosed. That’s the tobacco defense as well. If you want to smoke, that is up to you and your free will. Likewise, no one needs all of these digital distractions to survive. You can go without your smartphone if you want. Obviously you would be living like a savage who can’t figure out how to get a ride home or pay for food, but you could do it. With your free will and stuff.

Don’t get me wrong. I think Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, and the other tech giants are huge assets to humankind. (Okay, not the last three.) I admire most of them on many levels. I love their products most of the time. I can’t imagine living without them.

And that’s the point. They own me. Choice is an illusion unless I want to go full-caveman.

If we could reboot civilization from the beginning and engineer a perfect economy, I doubt we would agree to give away our brain cycles to every company that asks. Here’s how that meeting would go:

Primitive Guy 1: “Let’s build a vibrant economy that depends on distracting people from the things they want to do every minute of every day.”

Primitive Guy 2: “Excuse me while I push this spear through your stupid head.”

That plan would have never gotten off the ground. A civilization can only get to the point we are at right now by evolving over time. A few ads on roadside billboards probably reduced the boredom of driving. No one got hurt.

Today the tech companies blast your neurons with so many stimulants – all of them science-tested for maximum impact – that all of us are operating on sensory overload and inching toward insanity.

My best guess on the eventual death toll from Digital Distraction Syndrome is in the low tens-of-millions. For comparison, the second World War only killed 60 million. I think we’ll pass that mark with ease.

Am I wrong?

Sally Mann on Her New Memoir, Shooting Digital, and the Fate of Art Photography in the Age of Selfies

Sally Mann

Sally Mann has spent her career examining those things closest to her. Her subjects—captured in arrestingly candid, luminous black-and-white images—have included her own young children, facing down the slings and arrows of childhood in Immediate Family (1992); the beloved Shenandoah Valley landscapes of her youth, revisited with an adult understanding of historical wounds in Deep South (2005); and her once strong-bodied husband of more than four decades, Larry, ravaged by muscular dystrophy in Proud Flesh (2009). Whatever her subject, Mann’s work is both lyrical and unsettling, evoking universal human themes of innocence, eroticism, and mortality.

In Hold Still: A Memoir with Photographs (Little, Brown), Mann reflects on her life and work with the same unflinching vitality. Beginning with the family boxes stored in her attic, which she unpacks to uncover “a payload of Southern gothic”—fortunes made and lost, hidden love affairs, and a truly bizarre murder-suicide—Mann compellingly connects the past to her own clothing-averse and horses- and boys-obsessed childhood; her close bond with Gee-Gee, the African-American woman who helped raise her; and her decision to commit herself to a career in photography while she was a student at Bennington. “I existed in a welter of creativity,” she recalls, “sleepless, anxious, self-doubting, pressing for both perfection and impiety, like some ungodly cross between a hummingbird and a bulldozer.” But what makes Mann’s search for creative origins a contemporary classic is her frank reckoning with the downsides of exposure, from the firestorm that erupted over the photographs of her children (they also drew the attentions of a stalker), to her deeply reasoned thoughts on the transgressive, transcendent act of portraiture. “To be able to take my pictures, I have to look, all the time, at the people and places I care about,” she writes. “And I must do so with both warm ardor and cool appraisal, with the passions of both eye and heart, but in that ardent heart there must also be a splinter of ice.” By phone, I spoke with the 64-year-old artist about the fate of art photography in the age of selfies and Snapchat—and about the thinking behind her new series, her most challenging to date.

Writing a memoir like this also demands a commitment to really go there—to unpack those boxes in the attic. How did writing it compare to working on a photographic series?
It was excruciating. I didn’t even know I wanted to write this book. But in a certain sense, I was transported, it poured out of me. The way it came to me was almost the way pictures come to me. It was almost irrepressible at a certain point. I didn’t want to do it. I was scared to death of it. I didn’t expect to do it. I had no plans to write a memoir. Never in a million years would I have thought I’d be in this position. But once I got started, it’s though I just tapped into some hidden reservoir of experience and memory. Then, those boxes. Once I got into those boxes, I thought, This is too good to let go of.

One of those boxes that you unpack in the book is the ruckus over the images in Immediate Family. Looking at the photographs now—they’re positively Edenic—it’s hard to imagine anyone reading something exploitative in them, or even to remember what a tremendous firestorm they sparked.
Not for me.

Do you think our culture has changed a lot since then?
Yes, with the exception of the right wing, I think the culture is less puritanical. And I think, with the advent of the Internet, we all know about the existence of very real and serious forms of child exploitation.

The controversy really foreshadowed the kind of privacy issues we’re wrangling with today. It’s not just attitudes toward art and nudity that have changed; image culture has changed.
There’s no doubt about that. The whole nature of photography has changed with the advent of a camera in everybody’s hand. Yesterday, I was walking down the street in New York City, looked up and saw a man who was washing windows without a harness, and the whole street was lined with people with their cellphones up in the air, waiting for him to fall.

What do you make of that?
I don’t know. Is it any different than Henri Cartier-Bresson waiting for his decisive moment? I don’t know. Are the pictures getting better? That’s the real question.

Expand

Photo: Sally Mann

You famously print your own work. Do you ever use a digital camera?
Just for snapshots. I don’t capture the image digitally, yet. I say “yet” because I’m not ruling it out. I have no animus toward digital, though I still pretty much take everything on a silver-based negative, either a web plate or just regular silver 8×10. But I’ve started messing a little bit with scanning the negative and then reworking it just slightly. I’m right on the horns of that dilemma, as it happens. I’ve got a big body of work that I’m either going to print big, 40×50, three-gallon buckets of chemistry and big huge sheets of paper and tons of time, or I’m going to send a scan to a digital printer. It’s a lot of work doing that kind of printing. It keeps you fit, I will say that.

Your new body of work is largely about race, a subject you devote several chapters of your book to. The memoir allowed you to revisit the past with an adult understanding, such as the life of your African-American nanny, Gee-Gee.
That section of the book is very dear to me.

The series, also inspired by Walt Whitman’s “I Sing the Body Electric,” is comprised of images of black men who came to your studio to be photographed.
Yes. There are about 40 of them. Six or seven appear in the book.

You’re very honest about the trade-off between appropriation and the possibility of capturing a transcendent moment—a moment of communion or empathy. I’m not sure many photographers are that honest.
It’s about the inevitability of making your subject vulnerable and exploiting them.

Photo: Sally Mann

You’re one of the few female artists who look unflinchingly at men, whether it’s your husband or this current series. What is it that continues to draw you about the body?
Certainly, in the case of my husband, it was a documentary impulse because his body is so dramatically changed. I had such a powerful impulse to explore that photographically to maybe help me reckon with what’s happened to him. As I say in the book, it’s amazing that he’s even willing to let me do it. But in general, working with bodies is something that’s very difficult for me. In the pictures of the black men, it’s often more about a gesture, such as a hand reaching. Somehow to me, that’s one of the most poignant of the pictures because it expresses such tenderness. Those kinds of pictures, you can use the human form to express an overarching humanity.

Is this a change from how you approached taking pictures in the past?
Increasingly, the work I’m doing is in service to an idea rather than just to see what something looks like photographed. I’m trying to explore how I feel about something through photography. Right now, it’s this legacy of slavery idea which is still pretty inchoate. I’m trying to explore slavery from the point of view of freedom, which seems contradictory. What got me started was reading William Styron’s book, The Confessions of Nat Turner, which led me to begin photographing the Great Dismal Swamp. Freed slaves formed communities there, and no slaves catchers and their dogs would get there.

I started exploring the idea of what freedom offered to the slaves—what represented freedom and literally—physically—what offered it to them. Rivers, of course, could be both an avenue of ingress—every slave in America pretty much passed through the James River in Virginia—and a conduit for escape: If you got across the Susquehanna, you were in the free states; if you got across the Ohio River, you were in the free states. Also, you could hide in rivers. I’ve been photographing the Blackwater River, which is the river where Nat Turner lived. Then, religion. I’ve been photographing the little tiny clapboard churches just in my own little 50-square-mile radius. It’s a challenge, because we all know what represents slavery, but how do you represent freedom photographically?

Your children always intuitively understood the difference between reality and the image. Have any of them pursued photography?
Jessie is an artist herself—a painter, not a photographer—and she continued to model; she did a lot of work with a photographer named Len Prince. Right now she’s working on a PhD in neuroscience. Emmett aspires to be a writer and is working on a book. Virginia is an attorney here in New York City. She loves art history, though.

Will you write another book?
No, I don’t think so. I’m beginning to see that I have limited time, and that’s such a shock. It shouldn’t come as such a big surprise to me that I’m suddenly old, but it has, and I’m getting a little panicked about it. I don’t think I have time to do any more writing. If I want to deal with what’s left of my photographic life, I’m going to have to get on it.

This interview has been edited and condensed.

Gonzo And The Muppets Do Digital Underground’s ‘Humpty Dance’ In New Mashup Video

All right, stop whatcha doin’ because the latest Muppets mashup video is here and it features Gonzo taking on Digital Underground’s “The Humpty Dance.”

Gonzo, of course, plays the role of Shock G, which is fitting since the rapper is known to don an unusual artificial schnoz when he adopts the Humpty Hump persona.

The clip is the latest from YouTuber isthishowyougoviral, a.k.a. Mylo the Cat.

Mylo the Cat has become something of an expert in Muppets mashups, having previously riffed on Biz Markie’s “Just A Friend,” The Beastie Boys’ “So What’cha Want,” Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke.

Digital Trust Foundation Seeking Proposals on Digital Abuse Programs

The Digital Trust Foundation is seeking grant proposals around digital abuse. As the Request for Proposals (RFP) states, “The Foundation has found several gaps in digital abuse research and action” and is addressing that concern by seeking to fund “empirical research to understand the prevalence of various forms of digital abuse,” as well as “implementation and evaluation of digital abuse prevention strategies.”

The Foundation will also fund organizations that provide direct services to victims and projects that contribute to the digital abuse policy debate. The RFP and other supporting materials are available on the Foundation’s website. The deadline for submitting a proposal is 11:59 PM PT on May 7, 2015.

Grants will range from between $ 50,000 and $ 200,000, although exceptional projects outside that range will be considered. Non-profits, universities, private companies, and individuals are eligible to apply.

There are three funding categories: research, prevention and support. Here is a brief summary, but please see the RFP for more detail.

Context

The grant program is quite timely considering what is going on today. The recent conviction of Kevin Bollart for operating two “revenge porn” sites is but one of many recent examples of how some have used digital technology to abuse others. There are also numerous cases of online harassment on Twitter and other social networks. Young women are particularly vulnerable, but men and women of all ages have been affected. Even domestic violence and dating abuse now have their digital components. And, while most online young people are respectful of others, there are certainly cases of cyberbullying.

What is needed are prevention and support strategies that are based on the latest and most credible research that address the emerging problems. We also need more research to better understand the prevalence and impact of different types of digital abuse and how to address the problems effectively. The last things I think we need is exaggeration, “moral panics” and overly restrictive policies, nor do we need to violate Internet users’ right to free expression. We do need to develop some rational and research-based understanding and responses to the real issues that confront online

Research projects:

The Foundation is interested in projects that examine the prevalence of cyberbullying, cyberstalking, or digital domestic violence and is especially interested in those that compare digital abuse prevalence across age groups, including both youth and adults. Proposals that fill a research gap may be prioritized, which is especially important regarding cyberbullying of youth, as a lot of research on that topic has already been conducted.

Prevention projects:

The Foundation expects to fund several projects with diverse budgets up to $ 100,000 that will both implement and evaluate an “evidence-based digital abuse prevention program.” The projects can test new prevention strategies, but proposals must include a theory of change or evidence base to support the proposed strategies.

Support projects:

The Foundation is looking for “Supporting Digital Abuse Victims” proposals that provide information and or support to digital abuse victims, as well as projects that provide digital abuse training or educational materials to stakeholders, including those within the criminal justice system. Do you remember Facebook’s Beacon program? Back in 2007, Facebook came up with a plan for users to share purchases and other web activities on their Facebook newsfeed. It didn’t go over well with privacy advocates and was eventually scrapped. But, in the interim, there was a class action lawsuit that resulted in Facebook agreeing to fund a Foundation to spend about $ 6.7 million to fund projects that advance the cause of privacy, safety and security.

I am one of three members of the Foundation board of directors along with U.C. Berkeley Law Professor Chris Hoofnagle and Facebook Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan.

If you have any questions, please contact the Foundation staff. I am not in a position to discuss or respond to emails about the RFP or the proposals.

All Def Digital Presents “The Vault”, Starring Rico Love

The Vault is All Def Digital’s newest series, where artists, comedians, and other famous figures in the entertainment business give us the inside scoop on one of the craziest moments in their career. And when we say crazy, we mean crazy. Be prepared to hear all kinds of shenanigans, madness, and mayhem on each episode of The Vault, proving time and time again that there’s no biz like show biz.

On this episode of The Vault, ADD sits down with Rico Love, who talks about his first ever after party, which went down with Usher, lots of pretty women, and lots of Cristal. Unfortunately, something happened that got Usher pretty upset at his own party, and Rico may or may not have been behind the pretty epic party foul.

The Social Hazards Of Taking A Digital Detox, Explained

Believe it or not, there are some of us who have actually heeded the ubiquitous advice to unplug and recharge. The benefits, after all, can’t be ignored: Studies have shown that those who unplug every once in a while will get better sleep, be less stressed and have more fun! Unplugging can also help you to be more mindful, which will keep you in touch with your inner thoughts and help you to live in the present moment.

Sounds great, right?

Well, while we definitely encourage all you screen addicts to try it, those of us who love to ditch our devices also know that there’s a fine line between unplugging and disappearing off the face of the earth.

Below, we present, the trials and tribulations of straying from your smartphone:

While you’re enjoying the benefits of a little time away from your phone, not being able to get in touch may upset your loved ones.

And when you finally do text them back, they might want nothing to do with you, you absent fool.

Leaving the Internet behind for just a few hours means being painfully out of the loop on pop culture happenings.

On the bright side, your Instagram is an infinite feed of new pictures every time you open it.

Unfortunately, you have a mere 32 followers since you post maybe once a week.

Going to a new restaurant without knowing its Yelp score might sound like an exciting adventure — but be prepared to learn that Yelp exists for a reason.

Your weekends are relaxing as all get out, but you won’t have a workweek for long if you miss enough of your boss’s emails.

But an informative out-of-office note can go a long way, as can reminding your coworkers that having time to recharge improves productivity in the long run.

After a relaxing technology hiatus, returning to normal life can be really hard.

But even though you love to escape from it every now and again, you have to admit that your smartphone can make life a whole lot easier sometimes.

In the end, it’s all about balance.

You got this.

Apple wins digital music U.S. antitrust trial

Apple logo is pictured inside the newly opened Omotesando Apple store at a shopping district in TokyoBy Dan Levine OAKLAND, Calif. (Reuters) – Apple Inc won an antitrust trial on Tuesday when a U.S. jury decided the company did not act improperly when it restricted music purchases for iPod users to Apple's iTunes digital store. The verdict was read in an Oakland, California federal court. The plaintiffs, a group of individuals and businesses who purchased iPods from 2006 to 2009, sought about $ 350 million in damages from Apple alleging the company unfairly blocked competing device makers. Patrick Coughlin, an attorney for the plaintiffs, said "the jury called it like they saw it. …

Manners in Our Digital World

Bad manners seem to be everywhere! Whether it’s dinner guests fielding phone calls in the middle of a meal, drivers playing chicken for parking spaces, or the idiot on the subway clipping his toenails, we are one unmannered bunch.

We Babes interviewed Henry Alford, author of Would It Kill You To Stop Doing That: A Modern Guide to Manners, to get his take on whether our manners have gotten worse….or just changed with the times. Henry is a regular contributor to The New York Times and Vanity Fair, and is the author of three other acclaimed works of “investigative humor.” Here’s his take on today’s rude behavior.

Cell Phone TMI

Rude cell phone users seems to be the bane of the mannered. While sitting on the subway, or cooling our heals in the grocery check-out line, do we really need to know about a stranger’s acid reflex issues or that the boyfriend hooked up with someone else while drunk last night???? TMI!

Facebook Postings

And what about those rude people that post Facebook picture of parties, with all their nearest and dearest friends having a rollicking good time. Did our invitation get lost in the mail… again?!

Drug Store Restraint

Did you know that it’s polite to practice “drug store restraint?” For example, if you see your neighbor at the local pharmacy buying hemorrhoid cream, it’s probably best not to make a beeline towards them to chat. Henry suggests we head quickly to another aisle, thereby leaving your neighbor with his dignity intact.

“Reply All”

If you want to be seen as mannerly in the office — please don’t hit the “reply all” key when responding to a group e-mail with non-essential comments like “great” “thanks” or the worst, “Have a nice day.” Henry says this is like a “pixilated version of a styrofoam peanut!”

It Really Has Gotten Better

Finally, even though Henry complains a lot about the modern day unmannered, he says our manners have definitely improved, especially from the era of the 17th century German Christmas revelers. When their dinner parties really got going, and the spirits were flowing, guests would throw dog turds at one another, just for fun. Now that behavior would be considered downright rude — in any century!
