A Quest of Heroes: The Graphic Novel (Episode #1)

Genre: Graphic Novels

Publish Date: May 21, 2015

Publisher: Morgan Rice

Seller: Lukeman Literary Management

“THE SORCERER’S RING has all the ingredients for an instant success: plots, counterplots, mystery, valiant knights, and blossoming relationships replete with broken hearts, deception and betrayal. It will keep you entertained for hours, and will satisfy all ages. Recommended for the permanent library of all fantasy readers.”  –Books and Movie Reviews, Roberto Mattos  Here is episode #1 in the graphic novel adaptation of the #1 Bestselling epic fantasy novel A QUEST OF HEROES, with over 900 five star reviews!  From #1 Bestselling author Morgan Rice comes the debut of a dazzling new fantasy series. A QUEST OF HEROES (BOOK #1 IN THE SORCERER’S RING) revolves around the epic coming of age story of one special boy, a 14 year old from a small village on the outskirts of the Kingdom of the Ring. The youngest of four, the least favorite of his father, hated by his brothers, Thorgrin senses he is different from the others. He dreams of becoming a great warrior, of joining the King’s men and protecting the Ring from the hordes of creatures on the other side of the Canyon. When he comes of age and is forbidden by his father to try out for the King’s Legion, he refuses to take no for an answer: he journeys out on his own, determined to force his way into King’s Court and be taken seriously.  But King’s Court is rife with its own family dramas, power struggles, ambitions, jealousy, violence and betrayal. King MacGil must choose an heir from amongst his children, and the ancient Dynasty Sword, the source of all their power, still sits untouched, waiting for the chosen one to arrive. Thorgrin arrives as an outsider and battles to be accepted, and to join the King’s Legion.  Thorgrin comes to learn he has mysterious powers he does not understand, that he has a special gift, and a special destiny. Against all odds he falls in love with the king’s daughter, and as their forbidden relationship blossoms, he discovers he has powerful rivals. As he struggles to make sense of his powers, the king’s sorcerer takes him under his wing and tells him of a mother he never knew, in a land far away, beyond the Canyon, beyond even the land of the Dragons.  Before Thorgrin can venture out and become the warrior he yearns to be, he must complete his training. But this may be cut short, as he finds himself propelled into the center of royal plots and counterplots, ones that may threaten his love and bring him down—and the entire kingdom with him.  With its sophisticated world-building and characterization, A QUEST OF HEROES is an epic tale of friends and lovers, of rivals and suitors, of knights and dragons, of intrigues and political machinations, of coming of age, of broken hearts, of deception, ambition and betrayal. It is a tale of honor and courage, of fate and destiny, of sorcery. It is a fantasy that brings us into a world we will never forget, and which will appeal to all ages and genders. “[An] entertaining epic fantasy.”  —Kirkus Reviews  “The beginnings of something remarkable are there.”  –San Francisco Book Review  “A spirited fantasy ….Only the beginning of what promises to be an epic young adult series.”  –Midwest Book Review

For a Ghost-Free Time, Call: Episode One

Sean Kelly

Genre: Paranormal

Publish Date: July 31, 2016

Publisher: Emerald Inkwell

Seller: Smashwords

For a Ghost-Free Time, Call is an episodic supernatural adventure set in the emerald city of Eugene, Oregon which follows a young man, who–since he was a boy–has had the irritating ability to see ghosts all around him. In spite of this so-called “gift,” he found a way to cope and a few less than legitimate ways to make a little money on the side. But a con that started out as a way to make a quick buck will soon become a terrifying reality check about the world he thought he understood… “Eugene is teeming with ghosts and for some stupid, God damn reason, I’m the only one who can see them.” At the young age of nine, Jared developed the unnatural ability to see the lingering spirits of the dead, and beyond its initial novelty, all it’s ever done is piss him off. After having to grow up rather quickly on his own, Jared took something that would have easily driven most people insane and found a way to use his unwelcomed gift to his advantage. He studied and took notes from the most prevalent movies and television shows, and armed with every mainstream supernatural trope and cliché he could find, started his very own—more or less legitimate—ghost removal service. With years of hit-or-miss cons and a number of temporary solutions to combat the most crippling aspects of his “gift,” Jared finally found a way to live a “normal” life and a way to fit in with society. However, one day, while working a routine job for a rich mark, Jared will be confronted with his own lies and a glimpse of the truth behind the world around him and his abilities. For a Ghost-Free Time, Call is a supernatural thriller written by up and coming Pacific Northwest author Sean Kelly (author of "The Drive Home: A Tale of Bromance and Horror" and co-founder of Emerald Inkwell, A Pacific Northwest Publishing Community) and is the first story in an episodic series brought to you by Emerald Inkwell. Episode one is a FREE and complete short story setting the stage for an otherworldly series taking place all across Eugene, Oregon. Every city has their supernatural annoyances, but that doesn't mean you have to put up with them. Instead, for a ghost free time, just call.

‘South Park’ To Take On Police Violence In New Episode

The national debate on police violence has spread from Ferguson and Baltimore all the way to the small town of South Park, Colorado.

On this Wednesday’s episode of long-running animated series “South Park,” the town’s residents decide to abolish the police because they’re fed up with people who “impose their authority on the underprivileged.” Given the Comedy Central show’s history of iconoclasm, and its focus in Season 19 on political correctness, we’re gonna go ahead and guess that it doesn’t end well.

Here’s a clip from the episode, in which one of the town’s police officers defends his kind, saying that “not all cops are racist, trigger-happy assholes.”

“South Park,” which was created by college friends Trey Stone and Matt Parker, has a long and storied history of tackling controversial topics. Many of its most inflammatory episodes have focused on religious figures like Muhammad to the Virgin Mary.

Everything Is Papier-Mâché On ‘True Detective’ Episode 2

The season premiere of “True Detective” proved divisive last week, but entertainment editors Erin Whitney and Matthew Jacobs are sticking to their promise to discuss the show every Sunday. This week’s episode dove slightly deeper into the mystery of Ben Caspare’s death. The city manager’s grizzly autopsy report prompted Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ani (Rachel McAdams) to question whether a penchant for prostitutes led to his demise. Meanwhile, we got an unsettling look at Paul’s (Taylor Kitsch) family life, more of the series’ noirish driving scenes, Frank (Vince Vaughn) worrying about his riches and a cliffhanger that could (rightfully) take the show in a whole other direction. Let’s discuss.

Spoiler alert for “True Detective” Season 2, Episode 2, “Night Finds You.”

Matthew Jacobs: Hi, Erin! We were pretty cruel toward last week’s premiere, and the comments on our review seem to indicate a good number of people agreed with us. Then again, we were graced with a slew of ad hominem attacks on Twitter and via email, so clearly some of you took the episode as seriously as it took itself. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll be able to please the latter crop, so prep your aggression now, gracious readers.

I will say that Episode 2 was marginally better than the first. But hold on while I nod off as Frank moans about his self-made wealth (“Everything is papier-mâché” is an actual line uttered — twice) and while Ray, Ani and Paul exchange vacant side glares as they examine Ben Caspere’s body. On the other side lies the season’s first intriguing scene: Paul’s mother stroking his back and using what I assume is some sort of creepy euphemism when she tells him twice that he can have his “old room” if he spends the night. What is happening there? Give me more of that — it actually feels like there is a character with layers on the screen and not hollow bodies who shepherd the vague plot from one phase to the next.

taylor kitsch

Erin Whitney: Before I jump into this and thus throw myself into the gladiator pit against “True Detective” defenders, let me at least say that I’m not simply comparing this week’s new episode to Season 1. I will reference the initial season, though, because it’s difficult not to mourn something great in the midst of watching the melodramatic scenes from this week’s episode.

That opening sequence where Frank recalls his childhood with his drunk father is painful to watch, but in the wrong way. What should play as a poignant emotional moment is instead drenched in cheap desperation. Way longer than necessary, the scene feels like it’s ripped straight out of an actor’s guidebook to auditioning: the hardened criminal shows his vulnerability by recounting memories of his abusive daddy locking him in the basement. Pizzolatto has somehow lost all sense of subtlety in his writing to the point that I can’t help but wonder if he’s playing a joke on us.

Jump ahead to the car scenes between Ray and Ani and the group meeting between all three detectives. Each of these plays like a parody of Season 1 and, in general, much of quality television. Their conversations seem superfluous, or at least insignificant to the plot at hand. They don’t reveal any distinct or deeper qualities about the characters. Part of me thinks Pizzolatto has completely flipped his writing style to subvert our expectations of what TV should be, which is what Matt Johnston claimed in his Business Insider review. Even so, that’s not remotely engaging or serving any storytelling or symbolic purpose (at least not yet). I pray my mind will be changed by the end of the season — I desperately want to be in awe of this show. But so far, I’m simply not convinced.

Matt: I can’t say I buy that there is that much self-awareness at play, but I’ve seen others make arguments about its meta relationship to prestige programming, too. The show doesn’t seem to realize what it’s lacking, which is a sense of identity within the world it depicts. Every location featured is a grubby, nondescript part of this fictional LA-adjacent town, and without color from local denizens drifting through the background, it is rendered culture-less. That’s why I griped about the freeway shots last week — they reflect the web of plots the show has weaved, but do little to immerse us in what makes this town tick and why Caspere’s disappearance is worth eight talky hours of television. The same goes for the car scenes, where Ray and Ani carry on meaningless conversations that don’t unearth much about their worldviews or the communities they defend. And that green screen? HBO, please tell me the screeners you provided to press still needed color-correction work, because damn. If we thought the aerial shots do nothing for the season’s world-building, just look at the streets these characters drive down.

I thought the scene with Paul’s mother accomplished what most of the others did not in hinting at a mysterious backstory that we actually want to take the time to understand. I criticized his suicidal bender last week, but could Paul actually be the season’s best character? Not that he has much competition: I still don’t understand much about Ani and it seems like the show thinks we know more about Frank than we actually do, while Ray is so on the nose that I understand far too much about him. But wait! Maybe he’s dead? Those final few moments were pretty gripping, and it could point to interesting things to come. But I find it hard to believe he’s actually a goner.

vince vaughn colin farrell

Erin: I enjoyed the scene between Paul and his mother as well and finally began to feel a sense of discomfort, which is something this season has lacked so far. But I also really loved the final scene with Ray in Caspere’s secret home. The animal masks and vintage radio amped up the (possible) presence of the occult, and things were just starting to get interesting. Like you said, I can’t imagine the season killing off its lead character just yet. Still, it feels a bit cheap to tease audiences with such a big cliffhanger so early on.

The lack of identity you mention is my main criticism of the first two episodes overall. This season has no sense of place, which is surprising for a plot so grounded in a distinct locale. The corruption and grimy immorality of last season hung over every episode, reminding viewers of the horrors of world Rust and Marty were immersed in. It’s fine that Season 2 isn’t trying to recreate that feeling, but it makes the atmosphere that much less intriguing. Why care about a kidnapped official from a city no one cares for in the first place? Even after two episodes, I still don’t feel like we’ve witnessed enough of the idiosyncrasies of the fictional Vinci — I’m longing to see more of it, but the low-quality crushing car scenes and brief shots of factories do little to characterize it. Whatever happens moving forward, I hope that final scene pays off in a major way.

Matt: It gave me the sense that Ray knew more than the audience did. There was a certain comfort on his face as he lurked through Caspere’s home, implying his power-abusing corruption might extend to the expired city manager. That would give his need to retain custody over his possibly illegitimate son — the part of his life that he sees as a saving grace — a sense of purpose that stretches beyond clichéd daddy issues. Conversely, maybe he’s working to crush Frank’s entire operation after spending so much time indebted to him. That’s a script-flipping I’d sign on for. Either would ground the mystery by contouring the good-or-evil debate the show hasn’t convinced us to invest in regarding these characters. Maybe this is Season 2’s turning point. Here’s to hoping for a more immersive discussion next week.

Erin: The possibility of Ray withholding information and/or conning Frank all along is the most exciting theory yet, and one that could quickly turn me into a fan of this season. I’ve wondered whether scrutinizing this show episode by episode may hurt our perception of it. Last season I fell so deeply down the rabbit hole of uncovering the Yellow King’s identity that I nearly lost sight of the overall story at hand. While I’m still skeptical, I am going to try to pull back a bit and let the next few episodes wash over me, and hopefully they will surprise us both.

Homer And Marge Simpson To ‘Legally Separate’ In September Episode Of ‘The Simpsons’

There’s trouble in Springfield.

“Simpsons” producer Al Jean says Homer and Marge Simpson, the main characters of the long-running animated series, will “legally separate” in the upcoming season premiere in September.

“In the premiere, it’s discovered after all the years Homer has narcolepsy and it’s an incredible strain on the marriage,” Jean told Variety. “Homer and Marge legally separate, and Homer falls in love with his pharmacist, who’s voiced by Lena Dunham. We’ll have cameos from the other women from ‘Girls.'”

Jean didn’t say how long the separation would last, but given the show’s history, it’s a safe bet the pair will be reunited by the end of the episode.

The Simpsons’ marital woes were a topic of discussion on “The View” on Tuesday, as Whoopi Goldberg feigned outrage over the news.

What the hell?” she said. “Homer, what about a sister? In the time that I’ve seen you, I’ve never seen you with a black woman. Or maybe Marge is just a light-skinned sister and they haven’t said it. I don’t know.”

Jean told Variety about some of the other upcoming plot points and guest stars as well as the guest stars he wished he had booked. Read the full interview here.

Over the weekend, Jean said that this season would also feature an episode in which Bart Simpson would die at the hands of his longtime nemesis, Sideshow Bob. The death will be part of the annual “Treehouse of Horror” Halloween special, which doesn’t share continuity with the rest of the series — meaning Bart’s death will last only for that one episode.

“The Simpsons” is scheduled to return to Fox on Sept. 27.

As of now, it looks like the series will be without Harry Shearer, who voices Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders and a number of other iconic characters. Shearer said last month he would be leaving the show after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract.

News in Brief: ‘Game Of Thrones’ Fans Shocked After Some Little Goblin Or Something Killed Off In Last Night’s Episode

NEW YORK—Saying the series’s latest dramatic turn caught them completely off guard, fans of the HBO series Game Of Thrones reacted with shock to Sunday night’s episode in which some little goblin or something was killed off. “Man, I knew they had some big surprises in store, but to kill off that enchanted hobgoblin or mage or whatever? That was insane,” viewer Adam Koskei said of the episode’s unexpected climax, which not only featured the death of some sort of little warlock-type character, but also included a major secondary plot twist in which the centaur Stonebane Darkwind or maybe Kyrus Valorheart finally cast an ancient spell or something to that effect. “And it was so crazy how he was killed with that cursed rune or a fire-axe or a similar thing in that vein! I thought for sure he was going to get that chair, but …

Jimmy Kimmel Won’t Air New Episode Opposite David Letterman’s Finale: ‘I Have Too Much Respect For Dave’

Even Jimmy Kimmel will be watching David Letterman’s final “Late Show.”

Kimmel, whose ABC show “Jimmy Kimmel Live” airs at the same time at Letterman’s, said this week that he has chosen to air a repeat of his program on May 20, the night of his idol’s finale.

“I have too much respect for Dave to do anything that would distract viewers from watching his final show,” Kimmel told The New York Times. “Plus, I’ll probably be crying all day, which makes it hard to work.”

Both Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight Show” and “Conan” are planning on airing new episodes on May 20, according to the Times.

Letterman, 68, has spent 22 of his 33 years in late-night television as host of “Late Show.” Stephen Colbert will take the helm on September 8.

Kimmel has publicly expressed his respect and admiration for Letterman in the past. In 2012, he offered a tribute to the late-night legend at the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors.

“You, Dave, are the funniest, the smartest, the weirdest, the coolest, and the best one ever, hands down,” Kimmel said of his hero.

Redman Talks His Classic MTV Cribs Episode 14 Years Later [VIDEO]

Reggie “Redman” Noble is renown in Hip-Hop folklore not only for his marijuana expertise but for his ability to fully convey what “the hood” was all about.

This couldn’t have been exemplified any better when it came to his infamous appearance on the early 00s hit, MTV Cribs. Where as the show’s premise was for celebrities to take you into their lavish lives of luxury via their exquisite (and often doctored up for the episode) mansions. Funk Doctor Spock literally flipped the script when he took viewers into his Brick City, Jersey apartment which resembled the pad of a neighborhood weedman than a platinum-selling rapper on the hottest record label at the time (which was Def Jam Records, for your information).

Thrillist recently caught up with not only Reg but Nina L. Diaz, vice president of MTV News and Documentaries; Cribs creator and executive producer and series producer Erika Clarke to revisit the pop culture watershed moment. And yes, it has been confirmed that the episode was 100 percent authentic.

“While everybody was trying to show a lavish house, the lavish life of living, that’s not always the case. Not every entertainer’s living lavish,” Redman recalled. “They may have a more lavish set on the street, but it’s still real for a lot of cats out here in the entertainment game. We’re okay, but we’re not rich, and that’s what I wanted to display to my fans… I always try and think about what the ‘hood would say when I do things.”

Redman broke onto the scene in 1992 with full-fledged arrival with the timeless Whut? Thee Album and followed through with three consecutive gold albums before earning two platinum plaques by the new millennium. Despite the success, he never ditched his rugged, pothead persona and which is why the Redman MTV Cribs episode resonated with all viewers across the board.

“When they were in there filming, I did have a moment of thinking, “I don’t want to show that my city can’t live the good and lavish life too,” he continued. “But then I was like, “Fuck it, this isn’t about nobody else but me. I invited these guys to my house and now I got to go with it.” This is just something that we do. Everything you see was real. It’s just everyday life for us.”

MTV Jams recently unearthed the Redman MTV Cribs episode for your nostalgic enjoyment. Peep it down below.

‘Scandal’ Takes On Institutionalized Racism And Police Brutality In Ferguson-Inspired Episode

Thursday night’s “Scandal” focused on the shooting of an unarmed black teen named Brandon Parker in Washington, D.C., less than two miles from the White House. In the episode, called “The Lawn Chair,” tensions run high as the boy’s father positions himself in front of his son’s body with a shot gun, refusing to move from the crime scene. Mere days after being held hostage and auctioned on the black market, Olivia Pope is brought on the help the police force manage the incident. She works to avoid a riot, but soon finds herself disillusioned by the people she is defending.

It doesn’t take long for Liv to be swayed by the injustice, and she joins forces with the activist leading the crowd surrounding Brandon and his father Clarence. “All lives matter,” she chants.

She then does some classic Olivia Pope maneuvering to convince Attorney General David Rosen to grant a subpoena for footage of the altercation. “That man standing over his son’s body thinks he’s going to end up in one or two places: jail or a drawer in the morgue … I lived in complete fear” she says to Rosen, referencing her too-recent kidnapping. “Imagine living like that every single day of your life.”

When they finally get the tape, the video shows Brandon reaching for something in his jacket. The police claim he had a knife, and, sure enough, a knife is found on his body. But his father is outraged. “He doesn’t carry a knife,” he says, over and over.

Through her usual super-human powers, Liv is able to prove the knife did not belong to Brandon — it was evidence from an earlier arrest; Brandon was just reaching for a receipt — and puts the offending office behind bars. “What the hell is it with you people? Yeah, you people,” the (unabashedly racist) policeman who shot Brandon yells at Olivia when she confronts him at the station. “You people have no idea what loyalty is, what respect is. You’re here because you were supposed to help us and you spend every second of it trying to tear me down and push your own damn agenda.” It’s a sobering moment where the camera finds the black officers in the room, focusing on each of their faces as the cop spews his racist agenda.

During the final moments of the episode, Nina Simone plays in the background and Liv tells Clarence the officer is behind bars. Justice is served. She then brings him to the White House and the episode closes with Clarence crying in President Fitz’s arms. A final shot shows Brandon being zipped into a body bag.

“In the end, we went with showing what fulfilling the dream SHOULD mean,” Shonda Rhimes tweeted at the end of the episode. “The idea of possibility. And the despair we feel now.” Here’s what Kerry Washington and the rest of Twitter had to say:

‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ Episode 11 Recap: Magic Moments

*** WARNING: Contains spoilers! Please do not read on unless you’ve seen Episode 10 of “American Horror Story: Freak Show,” titled “Magical Thinking.” Or if you don’t mind spoilers, go right ahead! ***

After watching so many episodes of “American Horror Story,” it’s easy to become desensitized. It’s almost to the point where I hardly bat an eyelash at anything that happens — from Jimmy getting both his claws chopped off to Jamie Brewer’s Marjorie bludgeoning that woman to death with a meat tenderizer — but every now and then, usually towards the end of the season, Ryan Murphy and his team throw something at us that breaks the bounds of what we expect. Watching Neil Patrick Harris’ Chester take Bette and Dot’s collective virginity, all while holding a creepy puppet, is one of those things. Even worse, the scene is oddly sexy.

How did we even get here? We started “Freak Show” fearing Twisty the Clown, who’s long gone; we moved on to Dandy as the main “evil” character; now we have Marjorie, who seems to be alive to Chester, seems to be capable of murder, but is really, by all appearances, just an ugly puppet in a red dress. All the while, Stanley has lurked in the background as the main nemesis to the freak show, picking them off one by one. We also can’t forget Edward Mordrake, who showed up to take one soul. Looked at as a collective whole it’s ridiculous, but viewed as a series of bizarre vignettes, “Freak Show” is itself a freak show, with acts that come and go, some wowing, some not. Chester, his puppet and his magic act (Harris puts everything he’s got into this role), while totally tangential, are fun to watch, not to mention welcome in what was becoming a sad (Pepper, Meep, Ma Petite) and maudlin (Dell, Jimmy, Ethel) season.

It’s like suddenly every character is stepping on the accelerator. Jimmy starts things off by sacrificing his claw hands to Stanley in exchange for his eventual freedom, or at least lawyerly representation. I don’t know about you guys, but I feel like I’d need a little bit more convincing to part with both my hands, especially if they were such a fundamental part of my identity. Stanley brings up Meep, and it’s a done deal. “You’re in my hands now.” Indeed, Stanley.

Bette and Dot decide to become sex-crazed, and they begin to prowl the freak show for the right candidate to take their virginity. After being spurned by Jimmy and abandoning Dandy, for some reason the twins burn their diaries and go on an outright crusade to be “de-flowered.” When Chester arrives on the scene, it too is a done deal. The twins are reaching for his crotch within 20 minutes of meeting him. Like this episode, they get right to the point.

It’s obvious that Chester ain’t right. We’re given many, many clues to that effect. He has a metal plate in his head that “acts up” when he gets excited, is a veteran who still wears his uniform despite the fact the war ended four years earlier, sees his wife and lover’s heads on Bette and Dot’s body, and talks to his puppet as if she’s alive. But is she? Is she the “AHS” Chucky? Chester seemed to enjoy sleeping with the twins, so I’m not sure where they’re going with this. Dandy is circling as well, with intent to kill him for sleeping with Bette and Dot, so his days are more than likely numbered. My bet is he’ll be around long enough to saw the twins in two, and then Dandy will take his “half” and leave Dot to rot, while Marjorie will put Chester out of his undefined misery.

Elsa has her foot on the gas too, and not a moment too soon, as her precious babies are dying left and right. She’s packing her bags for Hollywood and plans to sell the freak show to Chester … but we all know that isn’t going to happen. After Desiree and Maggie bring encased-in-a-jar Ma Petite back to show Elsa, she snaps and shoots Del in the head, killing him. R.I.P., Dell. It’s OK, he was getting boring. Once an “AHS” character starts talking about a happy, productive future, you can pretty much kiss them goodbye.

We’re gearing up for a classic stand-off in these final two episodes. Not unlike our search for last season’s Supreme, it’s anyone’s guess who’ll come out on top on “Freak Show.” Will Elsa take off for stardom at the end, leaving her freaks all dead and buried behind her? Will Jimmy buy the show from Elsa (and find out she killed his mother and then kill her) and lead it into a happier future? Will Stanley eventually get all of the freaks on display at the museum, as was foreshadowed several episodes back? (If the twins do get sawed in half, that flashback/flash-forward that we saw was completely accurate.) It’s anyone’s guess.

But just as we saw tonight — a two-headed virgin having sex with a demented war vet wearing a puppet — this show isn’t something you can predict.

Freak Of The Week: Chester. Harris took this role and ran with it, and was as freaky deaky as they come. Watching your wife have sex with someone else while smoking cigarettes and wearing the damn puppet? That is all sorts of crazytown.

Random Thoughts:

  • This season could have used more Toulouse. “But I’m French!”
  • Only on “AHS” could you have a lesbian making out with a gay man, both playing straight characters, and have it seem 100 percent authentic. Bravo.
  • Ten points to whoever recognized Jamie Brewer as the voice of Marjorie before she was introduced on-screen.
  • “Your Homo erectus bullshit.” – Desiree
  • I want a recording of Sarah Paulson saying “Dear Diary.” It’s so soothing. She should consider doing audiobooks.
  • I’ve said it before in previous recaps, but damn, Evan Peters’ characters are always getting wrongfully charged with murder. They also get an inordinate number of “Noooooooo!” scenes.
  • Harris even had the eye twitch down. It was unsettling to look at him.
  • Can we all agree that puppets should just be banned worldwide? I see no practical use for them anymore.

“American Horror Story: Freak Show” airs on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. EST on FX and FX Canada.

‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ Episode 10 Recap: The Story Of Pepper

*** WARNING: Contains spoilers! Please do not read on unless you’ve seen Episode 10 of “American Horror Story: Freak Show,” titled “Orphans.” Or if you don’t mind spoilers, go right ahead! ***

“Orphans” is, above all, an episode for “American Horror Story” fans. Like a Christmas present. Featuring a few tiny subplots that barely move the main plot along, the majority of the hour-or-so is spent on fan favourite Pepper. Any true “AHS” fan remembers the wonderfulness of “Asylum” Pepper, and this glorious, lengthy backstory is like candy. Mind you, it’s a sometimes bitter, hard-to-swallow candy.

It’s too bad “AHS” doesn’t get more credit. It features some outstanding acting, and it’s interesting that we get our finest performances not from the seasoned veterans with multiple awards, but from the relative newcomers. Just as Finn Wittrock nailed it last week with Dandy’s lunacy, this week Naomi Grossman takes it home — and then some — as the maligned, abandoned Pepper. I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen whenever Grossman stared wistfully at whatever face was barking orders or leaving her behind.

From beginning to end, Pepper’s journey is spellbinding. It’s a testament to Grossman’s acting and the tactful writing (never thought I’d say that here) that this can hold an audience’s interest for over an hour. (I’m sure some of you were bored — again, it deviates pretty heavily from the main current of the show. But I, for one, was thoroughly entertained. I actually got upset when they went back to Stanley again.)

Scene after scene broke my heart: Pepper at the orphanage in the corner by herself, Pepper leaving the orphanage, Pepper meeting Ma Petite for the first time, Pepper meeting Salty for the first time, their marriage, their first kiss, Pepper lying on his dead body, Pepper being read to by Desiree, Pepper parting ways with Elsa, Pepper being framed for infanticide, Pepper in a straitjacket being led out of her sister’s house… OK, so that last one was more terrifying than anything else. It was pure rage dancing in Pepper’s eyeballs there. Wonder if she’ll ever get revenge on her sister? I would pay good money to see that go down. In any case, Pepper is now officially the poster child for this show. It should be Ryan Murphy’s personal goal to somehow inject her character into every “AHS” iteration going forward.

As for the rest of the episode, we get some water treading — enter the sexy, baritone-voiced Malcolm-Jamal Warner again, this time outright eye-f**king Desiree whenever they’re together. The couple wastes their time (and money) visiting a depressed Maggie to have their fortune read, and she ends up telling them it’s all going to eventually crumble into nothingness. The couple super-flirts and then … nothing. They’re really dragging out this “romance.”

Speaking of “romance,” Jimmy and Maggie. I literally forgot that Jimmy was in prison with the way Maggie behaves. When Bette and Dot offer her all of their savings to get Jimmy a decent lawyer, or when Desiree brings up Jimmy being in jail, I was like oh yeah! “AHS” is really good at moving on to something new, sometimes to its detriment. We had no Dandy and barely any movement on Jimmy, so thank goodness Pepper carried it.

Maggie brings Desiree to the Museum, so in case things turn out badly for her, someone else has seen it. We come just in time to see the latest item on display — Jimmy’s Lobster Boy hands. Maggie faints on the spot (this is all your fault anyway!) and we’re left to ponder: did Jimmy die when his hands were removed (no way)? Was this all just for lawyer money, or is it another of Stanley’s lies? Is the show going to deal with the biggest question of all: what to do when you lose the one quality that you’ve focused on your entire life? Going from lobster hands to no hands at all will be a drastic shock for Jimmy.

Oh, and don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere without talking about the return of Lily Rabe, a.k.a. Sister Mary Eunice (pre-devil possession, natch). It was like a dip in a warm, comforting pool to see Mary Eunice in her habit, with her gigantic eyes blinking slowly at Pepper’s sister. A few quibbles/questions: are we supposed to ignore the fact that Elsa Mars looks exactly like Sister Jude, who’s soon to make her own appearance at the orphanage? Wouldn’t Pepper immediately take to Jude, strictly based on looks alone? If Elsa Mars truly “owned Friday night” as LIFE Magazine said she did, then wouldn’t every single person — Sister Mary Eunice included — gush over her and at least mention it? I wouldn’t be surprised if “AHS’ somehow manages to link Jude and Elsa. If that’s the plan, I can’t wait to see how they do it. Otherwise this crossover seems kind of ill-fitting and contrived. But hey, this is “AHS.”

Freak Of The Week: Pepper. Pepper. Pepper.

Random Thoughts:

  • Proof that the Hollywood Foreign Press nominates only “established” actors with histories for Golden Globe Awards: Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates nominated for this show. I’m not saying they’re bad people or bad actors — though neither are super-strong on “Freak Show,” people like Wittrock, Grossman and Sarah Paulson should be commended in trophy form for their work here.
  • I’d like to coin it “The Dell Dump.” That was quick and painless for Desiree. Then a hug and it’s so long, pal!
  • Would love to sit down for schapps with Elsa and Desiree. Oh, the stories they’d tell.
  • Maggie dresses up as a newspaper boy was laughably bad. Did anyone, anywhere really think she looked like a boy in the slightest?
  • “Triple tits.”
  • The juxtaposition of Salty’s dead body with Elsa stacking bologna on white bread almost made me gag.
  • Was Pepper’s sister just a drunk, or was she also a bit mentally unstable? She said “piped clogs” instead of “clogged pipes” and was always muttering to herself. Would love to hear your opinions!
  • “AHS: Freak Show” wont’ be back until January. Until 2015!

Elaine Dance Contest At Baseball Game Is As Hilariously, Painfully Awkward As ‘Seinfeld’ Episode

There aren’t many contests where the worst dancer wins, but that was the case Saturday night at the Brooklyn Cyclones game in New York.

The team honored the 25th anniversary of “Seinfeld” with a “Salute To Seinfeld Night” featuring an information table for fans to “air grievances,” a mailman throwing the first ceremonial pitch, and an Elaine Dancing Contest.

If someone tells you that you dance like Elaine, it’s not a compliment. As “Seinfeld” fans fondly remember, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character “Elaine” had a talent for throwing toupees out of windows and determining which boyfriends were “sponge-worthy,” but she was a terrible, horrible, awful dancer.

Check out the videos below to see the wretched dancing attempts:
