Nike’s New 3D-Printed Textile, Flyprint Will Make Their Running Shoes Even Lighter

Nike Flyprint 3

Source: Nike / Nike

Nike is best known for innovations in their sneakers that aim to help athletes reach their peak performance levels. The sportswear giant revealed Flyprint, the next tier of their 3D-printing method that promises to make their running shoes even lighter.

This is some next level ish right here.

Flyprint is Nike’s new and first  3D-printed upper for their performance sneakers. What makes this new material even more special is the fact it utilizes athletes performance data to determine the exact composition of the textiles. This will allow Nike to create a high-performance shoe that is fully customizable based on the specifications of the runner and the region they are running in.

Nike Flyprint 4

Source: Nike / Nike

The first sneaker that will introduce the use of Flyprint is the Zoom Vaporfly Elite and it will be worn by runner Eliud Kipchoge when he competes in the London Marathon on April 22nd. The sneaker will be 0.38oz lighter on top of being resistant to water absorption that can hamper down a runner.

Nike Flyprint 1

Source: Nike / Nike

Now if you’re wondering when you can pick up a pair of the sneakers, Nike will be selling a limited run of the sneakers. But there is a catch though, you will have to be in London where you can purchase the sneakers on their SNKRS app. We are already anticipating the international struggle that will take place trying to land a pair of these bad boys.

There is no doubt Flyprint will take Nike’s kicks to another level we are looking forward to seeing how they will incorporate it into their other sneaker models as well. We can already see LeBron utilizing it in the next model of his signature shoe, hell why not drop a model of the already popular Lebron 15.

To learn more about the Flyprint head over to Nike.

You Could Have Serious Musical Potential and Not Even Realize It

You Could Have Serious Musical Potential and Not Even Realize ItIf you’ve got a particular personality type, you might be predisposed to be musically skilled.  If you’ve ever taken music lessons, you’ve had it drilled into your head that “practice makes perfect.” But is that really all there is to it? According to a new study in the Journal of Research in Personality, your musical ability could also be hinged on something a little more engrained: your personality. Researchers from the University of Cambridge and Goldsmiths, University of London, in the U.K., in conjunction with the BBC, put more than 7,000 people through a series of musical tests, including melodic memory and rhythmic perception tests. These were then linked to their scores on a Big Five personality trait test, which examined people’s scores on the traits of openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism.  Among the findings: The trait of openness is a key predictor of musical ability.

Afterwards, nothing goes as planned and the chain of events is the kind of sensation Hollywood pays millions to recreate.

We issue you a fair warning: once you click on this link, you won’t stop reading until the very end, so clear your schedule.

And when a beautiful mind such as Ava DuVernay can give you props (especially from another time zone), you know your imagination is A1.

Also, for those who still aren’t convince that it’s true, the Internets have confirmed a Jess sighting.

Why I Still Love Weddings Even Though I’m Divorced

“Wow, they’re really built for weddings, huh?” said one of my best guy friends to one of my other best guy friends while watching me and my best girlfriend kill it on the dance floor at one of our other best guy friend’s weddings a few years ago. Weddings are awesome. They just are. You have a bunch of people in a room with a dance floor and a band or DJ with a bar and probably a bunch of your friends and family — all dressed up and looking fancy. What more could you ask for to bring complete joy into your life for a couple of hours, right?

It’s two people making a choice to share their lives together and they’ve invited you (YOU!) to be part of it. Chances are there was a list. And that list was too long. And people needed to be cut from that list. But they thought you were important enough to be in that room when they look out at all the people they love most in the world sharing their special day about their special choice together. So what if you got divorced and you’re still bitter about love? So what if you think marriage is a joke and you think they are making a huge mistake? So WHAT? We live in AMERICA where people can make choices. And if down the line they decide that choice isn’t working for them anymore they can make another choice to go in a different direction. Or not. To each his own. For now, on this day, there is a dance floor and an open bar (my two favorite things). Also, I love love. I really do. I hope when people get married they stay married forever. But I also hope that if the marriage has dimmed both of their lights and they are no longer growing into the people they want to be, they have the courage to make another choice, to realize that life is long, and being miserable because you think you are trapped is no way to live. Not in America. But the wedding? That’s the party. That’s the celebration. You can’t hate a wedding!

This past weekend I had the pleasure of watching the last of my college friends get married. Maybe I’m just filled with euphoria because I just got to travel with 14 of my very favorite college friends and spouses (obviously, I’m the 15th wheel) for three nights in a city we’d never been to and wake up in hotel rooms without kids wondering what we’re making them for breakfast. Maybe my feet are still sore from dancing to the epic songs the DJ played — “Livin’ on a Prayer,” “Bye, Bye, Bye,” “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” “Uptown Funk,” “Billy Jean” and “Everybody” just to name a few. Maybe I’m still hung over. Maybe my face still hurts from laughing at all of us, 16 years out of college, still showing love by completely making fun of each other. Maybe I look out as the groom dances with his mother and get a little weepy knowing that maybe someday I’ll be doing that with my son…and my other son. Maybe I think back to my own wedding, where I knew, unequivocally that I was making the best decision of my life — which I still believe 4 years after the divorce. That choice we made to marry brought me the two absolute loves of my life, and I look fondly on having the pleasure to dance with both of them, someday, at their own weddings.

Maybe by then I’ll actually have a plus one!

How LGBT History Can Inspire Hope, Support Health, and Even Prevent HIV

“A people deserves a history.”

That’s how Larry Kramer–Tony and Emmy-winning playwright, author, and America’s best-known HIV/AIDS activist–spoke about the just-released first volume of his two-volume novel The American People. Kramer has labored over the book for decades, fine-tuning his sometimes fanciful American history from a gay point of view.

“I want every gay person to be aware of our history,” Kramer told me, “whether or not I’ve fictionalized it.”

He added, “You should know your history. I want gay history taught in schools. And they don’t teach it.”

I interviewed Kramer in his Manhattan apartment on July 29 for the Los Angeles Review of Books and for my forthcoming book about building gay men’s resilience.

Being familiar with, and drawing inspiration from, our history as LGBT people can contribute tremendously to our personal resilience.

We are heirs of what I call “LGBT America’s heroic legacy,” the acts and words of men and women who chose to stand up for their humanity, integrity, and fully equal American citizenship–rather than accept the shame and silence they were told was their lot in life for being “different.”

They often paid a steep price: Diagnosed by psychiatrists as mentally ill because they weren’t heterosexual. Condemned by religious institutions. Disowned by families. Even left to fend for themselves in the face of a terrifying new disease called AIDS.

Before President Ronald Reagan’s health department in 1982 declared AIDS the nation’s “number one health priority,” Larry Kramer and five other gay men in New York began raising money for research and formed Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), the world’s first–and still largest–organization to advocate and care for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Nursing homes, used to caring for elderly patients, were not prepared in the early eighties (or today) to care for young men in their twenties, thirties, and forties. So gay men and their friends created from scratch a parallel network of health care and social service organizations, like GMHC, to care for their own.

Back then advocacy included arguing with ambulance drivers to take deathly sick people with AIDS–mainly gay men–to the hospital. Care meant doing errands and arranging doctor visits for clients who were terminally ill, at some stage of cancer, dementia, or pneumocystis pneumonia.

By the end of 2011, HIV/AIDS had already killed an estimated 311,087 gay and bisexual American men. Fifty-seven percent of the estimated 500,022 persons living with an HIV diagnosis at the time were gay and bisexual men.

Two-thirds of all Americans living with HIV, and newly infected each year, are still gay and bisexual men–even though we account for only an estimated two percent of the population. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

Black gay and bisexual men accounted for the largest number of new infections (10,600, or 36 percent) in 2010. Among them, young black males between age 13 to 24 made up nearly half the total–a 20 percent increase from 2008.

For any of us who lived through the dark years of the 1980s–and particularly for those of us living with HIV, including myself–despair can seem a natural response to numbers like these.

They certainly make one thing very clear: America is still failing to stop the spread of HIV and is far from achieving the ‘AIDS-free generation’ envisioned by the Obama administration.

As I examine HIV prevention education aimed at gay and bisexual men for my new book, one thing is clear: to work, prevention education must go beyond PrEP and condoms. It has to address the drivers of risk behavior–the feelings and needs in our hearts and minds that compel us to engage in sex the way we do, even to attribute meaning to particular sexual acts.

Earlier prevention efforts, growing out of a desperate wish to arrest the spread of HIV as quickly as possible, were based on a “deficit” model. They told us simply “use a condom every time.” No questions asked. They assumed we couldn’t be trusted to make healthy choices based on factual information, and frequently invoked fear to douse our libidos.

Newer efforts, in contrast, draw upon what is referred to as a “strength-based” or “resilience-based” model, aimed at strengthening our confidence, pride and resilience.

Starting from a place of respect and validation, these interventions work essentially to build hope. Their premise is simple, really: Men who are hopeful about their future will naturally want to protect themselves to be here for it and healthy enough to enjoy it.

“You’ve got to give them hope,” is how Harvey Milk, America’s first openly gay elected official, put it in a 1978 speech. Milk understood that inspiring hope in a gay boy’s heart could mean the difference between a happy future–and suicide.

In this LGBT History Month, claiming as our own the powerful legacy of people like Harvey Milk and Larry Kramer, who stood up and now stand out in our history, offers a powerful source of hope and resilience, a solid foundation for HIV prevention and for good health.

Sarah Palin Criticizes Ahmed Mohamed On Facebook, Can’t Even Spell His Name Right

It wouldn’t be a GOP opinion unless it goes totally against the grain of the popular thought, and Sarah Palin managed to insert her unsolicited two cents into the Ahmed Mohamed situation.

The former Governor of Alaska has been obsessed with President Obama’s every move since her failed campaign for vice president in 2008 and she used the recent controversy in Irving, TX for a direct jab at the White House.

She also tried to paint the 14-year-old teen as a privileged troublemaker who was immune to the same punishment other (white) students made, but were subjected to national attention. Palin, 51, also couldn’t be bothered with taking heed to the correct spelling of the boy’s name but her right-wing followers loved her all the same for it.

“Friends, consider the kids disciplined and/or kicked out of school for bringing squirt guns to school or taking bites out of a pop tart until it resembled (to some politically correct yahoo) a gun,” Palin wrote via Facebook. “Or the student out deer hunting with his dad early one morning who forgot he had a box of ammo in his truck when he parked in the school’s lot later that day. Kids humiliated and intimidated for innocent actions like those real examples are often marked the rest of their lives and made to feel really rotten. Whereas Ahmed Muhammad, an evidently obstinate-answering student bringing in a homemade “clock” that obviously could be seen by conscientious teachers as a dangerous wired-up bomb-looking contraption (teachers who are told “if you see something, say something!”) gets invited to the White House.”

Cops who arrested Ahmed were fully aware that the strange-looking clock wasn’t an explosive device but “humiliated and intimidated” him by hauling him off to juvenile detention regardless. Still, Palin thinks Obama acted impulsively by extending an invitation for him to visit the White House.

“By the way, President Obama’s practice of jumping in cases prematurely to interject himself as the cool savior, wanting so badly to attach himself to the issue-of-the-day, got old years ago,” she continued. “Remember him accusing police officers doing their job as “acting stupid”; claiming if he had a son, he’d look like Trayvon Martin; claiming he needed to know who was a fault in an industrial accident so he’d “know who’s a** to kick”; etc., etc. Those actions are about as presidential as his selfie stick.”

Palin ran a campaign based on catering to hockey moms and spending a great chunk of the time attempting to prove she was qualified, fundamentally and politically, for the job. Had she and John McCain been elected, it probably isn’t a shot in the dark to say her commentary on social issues would reflect her persona as a conservative white woman living in Alaska.

Learning to Live Happily Even After

None of us think, when walking down the aisle to pledge life-long devotion to our one true love, that we will one day wind up on the wrong side of that tenacious 50 percent divorce divide. Much of the shock of a breakup is the insult it is to our expectations. And even the most sophisticated and seasoned of us, deep down inside holds out for the hope of living happily ever after. Falling short of this collective ideal is not only terribly painful, but can also be deeply shameful as well.

According to former Columbia University professor and cultural anthropologist, Ruth Benedict, shame differs from guilt in that guilt is something we are likely to feel when we violate our own core values, disturbed that something we have done is fundamentally bad and wrong. Shame, however, is something we feel when we have violated the external rules and expectations that society has placed upon us, leaving us feeling as though who we are is fundamentally bad and wrong.

As modern and worldly as most of us are, we collectively still cling like barnacles to our fairy tale aspirations, as well as to our covert assumption that if a romantic relationship ends for any reason other than one or both people die, that that relationship is a failure. Yet the myth of happily ever after was actually created when the life span was less than 40 years of age. And as much as we all love riding off into sunsets, it may be time to revisit the standards to which we hold ourselves and others accountable when it comes to dating, mating and marriage.

Dr. Helen Fisher, professor at Rutgers University and renowned relationship anthropologist reports that serial monogamy has now become the new norm, suggesting that most of us will have two to three significant relationships in our lifetimes. Just as it was once the norm to meet and marry your one true love, it’s now just as normal to not mate for life. With over 40% of first marriages, 60% of second marriages and 70% of third marriages ending in divorce, maybe we need to start recognizing it as normal to change our primary partners through our various stages of life? In an age where we up-level just about every aspect of our lives to keep pace with our ever-evolving life conditions— our work environments, sleeping habits, child-rearing practices, workout routines and diets–perhaps we should also consider up-leveling our outdated and overly simplistic models for romantic love. Putting aside our escapist fantasies of the lives we wish we were living, in favor of a more wholehearted vision that is relevant to the lives that we are living.

A recent New York Times article reports that for the first time in recorded human history more people over 50 are divorced than widowed. It’s my hope that we can begin a conversation about how to end our romantic unions with decency, respect and honor rather than assume them to be failures and slink away with our tails between our legs. Rather than define the value of our relationships by the overly simplistic question, “How long did it last?” that we instead begin asking questions like, “How did I expand my capacity to give and receive love in that relationship?” or “What beauty and goodness were created as a result of that union?” and “What have I learned about love that I can now apply moving forward?”

It’s my theory that inside of the happily ever after myth and our collective assumption of failure, that we never actually learned how to complete our intimate unions in a way that allows us to do so with dignity, honor, respect and yes….even love.

Given that the majority of us will experience one or two major breakups over the course of our lifetimes, learning to consciously uncoupling so that we and those we love can live happily even after, may just be the next stage of our collective evolution.

Ghetto – “Ain’t Even Illegal” ft. Smoke DZA & REKS (DJ Concept Remix)

If you burn and you live in this hemisphere then its the perfect time to spark one up and get down with this song. This is a perfect sunny day, warm breeze track. Lawtown representative Ghetto’s standout track “Ain’t Even Illegal” gets a new coat of blunted paint courtesy of Long Island’s, DJ Concept. His approach ditches the grimy, albeit dope, aesthetic of Lee Bannon’s original, and opts for flourishing strings, and an old-school R&B guitar line to bolster the track. It all blends perfectly with the rhymes supplied by Ghetto, Smoke DZA, and R.E.K.S., who throw middle-fingers at sheisty cops, and show love to only the finest green. Listen to the “Ain’t Even Illegal” remix via the link below and watch out for #CSDE when it drops Oct. 20, 2015.

Here’s Definitive Proof Christmas Is Starting Even Earlier This Year

Every year for as long as you can remember, the Christmas season has somehow started even earlier than the year before.

Given the photo below — that was captured yesterday by James Martinez, an engineering student at Moorpark College in California — it seems that 2015 will be no different. Santa Claus is already gearing up to come to town.

Wondering if this viral photo simply captured Santa getting through his summer reading list and not a canary warning of the coming onslaught of cheer, The Huffington Post found the man in the photograph with the help of Martinez and reached out.

“I am a traditional spoken-word storyteller, and a lore master on a few subjects — faerie folklore, Celtic folklore, etc.,” True Thomas the Storyteller (aka Robert Seutter) — the alleged Mr. Claus — told HuffPost over an email. After getting involved with a reenactment group in the late ’80s, Seutter became their bard, moving on to storytelling at schools and getting involved with storytelling festivals. He also moonlights as a professional Santa.

“I’m a newer Santa, and it’s my goal to become a Christmas lore master,” he wrote.

Asked whether he noticed that his presence at the library was attracting attention, Seutter replied, “No one approached, it was done very stealthily. I thought all the students around me were sleeping, or zoned on their phones.” Looking back at the photo, that clearly not-stirring student immediately to Thomas’ right does appear to be ready for it to be the night before Christmas already.

Seutter said that he is researching for his stories all year round. Perhaps it isn’t quite time for this Santa to be making his way into your living room, but do know that Christmas has already begun in London’s iconic department store, Selfridges. It’s only a matter of time, America.

KFC Ads Get Even Weirder With Norm Macdonald As ‘Real’ Col. Sanders

KFC’s weird ads have just gotten even weirder, with the introduction of a plot twist in the form of comic Norm Macdonald, who claims to be the “real” Colonel Sanders.

In a new commercial, Macdonald — dressed as the fast food chain’s founder — watches one of the recent love-’em-or-hate-’em ads that featured fellow “Saturday Night Live” alum Darrell Hammond as the Colonel.

“Hey! That’s not the real Colonel Sanders! I’m the real Colonel Sanders,” says Macdonald. “This is how you sell chicken!” He then introduces himself as “Real Colonel Sanders,” does the sales pitch and announces, of course, that the food is “finger-lickin’ good.”

“Other than not quite looking like him, his voice being different and his inability to cook the world’s best chicken, we thought Norm was the perfect choice to play the Real Colonel,” Kevin Hochman, chief marketing officer for KFC U.S., told AdWeek. “I think the fans will agree.”

A second ad features Macdonald as Sanders in his underwear denouncing the “imposter” Colonel Sanders. As he gets dressed, he says “they can’t just grab some super-funny Hollywood actor, throw a white suit on him and try to pass him off as the real Colonel Sanders.”

Check that out here:

Macdonald has also filmed an ad aimed at parents, and another directed at young people, who apparently enjoy “spontaneous road trips and breakdancing.”

For the record, the real Col. Harland Sanders died in 1980.

NEW YORK (AP) — Luke Bryan is easily the reigning prince of country music: He's scored 10 No. 1 hits on Billboard's Hot Country songs chart; he's one of a few contemporary acts to sell out stadiums; and he's achieved back-to-back multiplatinum albums. Silly Musings on an Even Sillier Presidential Election Spectacle

As we enter the 2016 presidential election silly season, what was once the GOP presidential candidates “Clown Car” has now grown into an oversized, overladen, over ripe “Clown Bus” packed with characters trying to attract the voters’ attention by competing to see who can offend the most people the most with their dog whistles and red meat “rallying cries.”

This writer has decided to join the silly season with a silly piece on these silly people’s silly slogans.

Readers beware. Should you decide to get off the clown bus, this may be your last chance.

Here we go:

When former Florida governor Jeb Bush announced his GOP candidacy for president, much of the attention was on the name/logo he chose to run under.

Rather than to run as Jeb Bush, he chose to run simply as Jeb!

The scuttlebutt is that Jeb Bush wants voters to forget and forgive that he is the brother of that other Bush and part of a passé dynasty.

Thus, GOP presidential candidate John Ellis “Jeb” Bush chose Jeb! from among a dozen possible name permutations.

Adding that exclamation point was brilliant. So emphatic! So definitive! Nothing more to follow — ergo nothing more to be embarrassed about!

But Jeb is not the only presidential candidate trying to put some distance between himself and his or her family legacy.

Two other dynasty candidates have omitted their last names from their campaign logos: Hillary and Rand.

It appears to this writer with a lot of time on his hands and with a lot chimeras in his head that it would be neat to figure out — if they had to pick a one-word logo — what names the candidates would pick to run under, or run from.

We have already discussed Jeb!

Let us look at Christopher James “Chris” Christie.

He has a problem.

Christie! would remind too many of New Jersey Governor Christie’s role in the “Bridgegate” scandal.

Christopher and Chris sound too much like Christie. So that leaves only James or, better, Jim!, short, slim and anonymous.

How about Michael Dale “Mike” Huckabee?

Huckabee! sounds too much like Wannabe!, so that is out.

Michael or Mike sound a little bit blah.

Dale does not go with the prestige and divinity of an ordained Southern Baptist minister.

That leaves only Huck! Strong and macho sounding — should certainly attract those women who “cannot control their libido.”

What does one do with Rafael Edward “Ted” Cruz?

Born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban-born father who was later naturalized, he certainly doesn’t want a logo that would rekindle the “birther” specter that was so abundantly evoked with Barack Obama.

The Latino vote could be a problem for him. However, Cruz could solve it in the same way he handles campaign ads directed at Spanish-speaking votersen español, claro! — do not have a single word about immigration, rather about “fe, libertad, y oportunidad.”

The ads beamed at “real Americans” Americans excoriate President Obama’s executive action on immigration.

Following this “business model,” the Hispanic logo could be “Eduardo Rafael Cruz” and the logo for real Americans “Edward Ted Cruz,” or simply, Eduardo! and Ted!, respectively.

On second thought, since Cruz “salutes” the prejudiced ground Trump walks on, how about a CruzTrump! ticket.

Talking about Donald John Trump, Sr., he faces similar challenges courting the “some” Mexican-Americans who he assumes “are good people.”

Trump! sounds too much like himself and like chump, frump, rump, grump, or the dumps he is receiving from NBC, Univision, Macy’s, Serta, NASCAR, etc.

Donald! might fittingly remind voters of a sideshow comic book character.

Regrettably, Trump doesn’t have the initial “C” in his name, as Coiffe! would have been perfect.

But wait, proud Hispanics have already suggested a logo for Trump: ¡Pendejo! although the leading “upside-down” exclamation mark could pose a problem for Trump’s Anglo-Saxon keyboards.

Then there is Piyush “Bobby” Jindal.

Piyush! Nah! Pronunciations will be hard to predict and could “spell” trouble.

Jindal! Too close to jingle, jingo…Jindal.

Bobby! would needlessly risk comparisons with that great (Democratic) Bobby.

#AskBobby? Nah, that was a miserable failure.

Ditching the one-word logo rule, “Les Bon Temps Bobby” would be just fine.

Now we come to Lindsey Olin Graham.

Lindsey sounds too feminine and, when combined with Olin, well, you get linseed oil. So, I guess Graham! it is, but without the crackers.

What does one do with James Richard “Rick” Perry?

James! or Jim! are already taken. Rick! Is reserved for Rick Santorum, below.

Ooops! might be great for brand recognition but for nothing else.

Cheating a little bit and running his three names together, we get JamesRichardPerry!

With such a three-word slogan, the former presidential candidate will hopefully remember at least two of the three slogan parts.

Dr. Randal Howard “Rand” Paul has a double-edged problem.

He has to be careful to both separate himself from his father’s (Ron Paul) legacy and not to be confused with Paul Ryan.

Howard! Is a possibility, but that could remind many of “the scream.”

That leaves Rand! Which, as St. Ridley Santos at the Powder Room writes, would “trade off the cultural cache of another Rand – Ayn Rand.”

Cara Carleton “Carly” Fiorina is the only female Republican presidential candidate thus far. If successful in the primaries she may have to run against Hillary!

Fiorina! sounds flowery and feminine enough to capture some of that female vote she’ll need, chauvinistic as it all may sound and be.

Marco Antonio Rubio

Marco! would readily remind voters of the game “Marco Polo” traditionally played in a swimming pool, which is filled with water, which would bring back painful, thirst-filled memories of Rubio’s “water bottle-gate” moment.

Rubio!? Marco is not blond.

That leaves Antonio! Latinos would love the link to Marco Antonio Solis’ beautiful songs and music.

No, not Tony!

Richard John “Rick” Santorum

After last election’s embarrassing controversy with “Santorum,” Richard! John! Rick! — anything but Santorum!

Finally, we come to a group of candidates without much name recognition:

Benjamin Solomon “Ben” Carson, Sr.

George Elmer Pataki

John Richard Kasich

Scott Kevin Walker

Solomon! Elmer! Dick! And Kevin! are out.

So, let’s see how Ben! Pataki! Kasich! and Walker! play out this silly season.

That’s all folks. Now back to the real world of even sillier silliness.

Why French Girl Style Still Reigns, Even on July Fourth Weekend

Photo: Getty Images

The whole concept of dressing/eating/child-rearing/what-have-you “like a French girl” has caught a fair amount of flak recently. Lynn Yaeger even made the case for not gravitating to that now-cliché, effortless je ne sais quoi: “Will you ever stop wondering how it is that a Parisienne is able to sail into Monoprix, drop 100 euro,” she questions, “and emerge looking like Catherine Deneuve in Belle de Jour?” No, Lynn, no, we won’t stop wondering! We’re screenshotting her as we speak and putting it in a folder titled “French Girl Style Inspo.”

Plus, who are we kidding? It’s nice to dream. No matter how hard one tries to embrace their homegrown style of tank tops and boat shoes or Independence Day–appropriate American-flag bikinis, there’s always the image of that one Parisian girl that is très transfixing: She’s sauntering around the city with a two-day-old, tousled unwashed mane and teeth that are just perfectly imperfect, one of those mesh supermarché bags in tow, and then immediately heading to a hazy, underground club where she is flanked by gyrating, beautiful people all night long. And she looks great—always while wearing a vague mash-up of something loungy, something dressed-up, something baggy, and something tight. Look: There’s no shame in wanting to possess that French girl shtick, because what that French girl shtick comes down to is basically “looking hot but never trying.”

So why not just embrace your amour for the messy French belles and all of their devil-may-care descriptors already? Love how they gracefully chomp down on escargot while wearing a beret? Purchase a can from Stop & Shop and a topper! Love how Brigitte Bardot always manages to maintain a come-hither pose with half-pursed lips in every photo—and every film? Buy a mirror and get to practicing! Or maybe you simply like how Françoise Hardy slouches but still has an enticing allure? Get your Quasimodo on (he’s French, too)! (Just kidding, please stand up straight: You can sling a leg over the arm of your chair or something for some of that trademark insouciance.) Or maybe it’s social media’s modern-day human #FrenchGirlStyle Pinterest board, Jeanne Damas, and how she wears lipstick that never smudges off. Well, try a waterproof swipe yourself.

It’s easy to get obsessed with the nation’s leading ladies—old and new. But they don’t care! So neither should you—in that chic, slightly unattainable way. So emulate them as much as you want, and don’t listen to anyone else: Is that not, at its core, the most truly American thing to do? Throw on a loose boyfriend-style button-down, a tight pair of skinnies, low-heeled booties, a neck scarf and call it a day with your perfected, laid-back French girl uniform. Even if you find yourself far away from Le Marais this Fourth of July, sipping on a bottle of something domestic and holding a hormone-injected hot dog, you’ll still look chic—just try to avoid getting ketchup on that marinière while you capture your Bardot pout for Instagram.

Why It’s Never Too Late For ‘Premarital’ Counseling (Even After Years Of Marriage)

Sarah says her husband Jason, a pastor, can be controlling — wanting to always know where she’s going, listening to her phone conversations and checking her social media accounts — but she says she wants to make her eight-year marriage work.

Jason admits he can be a jerk but says he doesn’t know why he acts the way he does. “I can be controlling and manipulative,” he says. “I want to know what’s happening, when it’s happening, why it’s happening. There have been times I’ve been verbally abusive … Why I act that way, I don’t know. But I know that I shouldn’t.” They turn to Dr. Phil for help.

Dr. Phil tells the couple that relationships continually need to be negotiated to meet the needs of both people. “There’s a formula for success in a relationship,” Dr. Phil says in the video above, “and the formula is this: It’s a function of how well it meets the needs of the two parties involved. In order for it to be successful, you need to learn what her needs are and make it your life’s mission to meet them. And you need to learn what his needs are and make it your life’s mission to meet them.” He explains that marriage is not a 50/50 partnership; rather, both spouses need to contribute 100 percent. “Everybody has to be all in all the time,” he says.

Dr. Phil also suggests that even though the couple has been married for eight years, they should go through “pre-marital” counseling. “I want you to sit down and talk about all the things that are topics in a marriage: parenting philosophy, and religion, and sexual expectations, and division of labor, and finances, and future planning and all of those things that go into a marriage,” he tells them. “I want you to negotiate until you come up with a plan that both of you can be really excited about.”

As for Jason, Dr. Phil says he needs to hold himself to a higher standard to fulfill his role as the man in the family. “If you wake up every day and ask yourself the simple question: What can I do today to make my wife’s life better? You’ll be amazed how things can begin to change,” Dr. Phil says.

Take Dr. Phil’s “Marriage Inventory Quiz” to see if your marriage could be at risk of falling apart.

Sports News in Brief: Stadium’s Pathetic Home Run Animation Doesn’t Even Show Ball Screaming While Leaving Earth

CLEVELAND—Calling it a complete and utter failure not worthy of Major League Baseball, sources at Progressive Field confirmed Monday that the stadium’s pathetic home run animation doesn’t even show a baseball screaming as it leaves Earth and flies into outer space. “You don’t get to see the ball’s cover fly off while it rockets out of the atmosphere and becomes a distant twinkle in space—are you kidding me?” said spectator Jake Vaughn, 37, adding that the pitiful excuse for a scoreboard graphic simply shows a large, slowly rotating baseball imprinted with the Cleveland Indians logo as the phrase “Home Run!” appears surrounded by exploding fireworks. “First of all, the ball doesn’t even have eyes or a mouth, but it wouldn’t even matter unless it was terrified and screaming next to a speech bubble that says ‘So long!’ or ‘It’s outta here …

News in Brief: NRA Starts Up Their Shit About What Would Be Even Greater Injustice

FAIRFAX, VA—In the wake of Wednesday’s mass shooting that left nine dead at a church in South Carolina, sources confirmed today that National Rifle Association officials had already started up with their shit about what would be an even greater injustice. “What happened in Charleston is a terrible tragedy, but what would be even worse is if we reacted to this event by passing laws infringing on our constitutional rights,” said NRA board member Charles Cotton, who, right on cue, let loose the same predictable flood of steaming horseshit about how the real threat facing Americans comes from legislators who would attempt to restrict access to firearms. “While we mourn those killed, we should never let an incident like this distract from our defense of [the fact that I myself am a pile of human waste who is fundamentally incapable of responding to the deaths of innocent people …

News: Study Finds Dangers Even In Casual Bullfighting

BETHESDA, MD—Challenging conventional wisdom about the activity’s hazards, a groundbreaking new study by the National Institutes of Health published Thursday has determined there are significant dangers even in casual bullfighting.

The health agency’s latest findings indicate that bullfighting recreationally, often considered relatively harmless in comparison to frequent or habitual bullfighting, carries health risks far more severe and long lasting than had been previously understood.

“There’s a general perception out there that bullfighting in moderation is relatively safe, but our data paint a very different picture,” said lead author Susan Ellis, noting that the study, which assessed the health of more than 200 bullfighters, provided clear evidence that engaging in even just an occasional bullfight considerably raised the risk of adverse medical outcomes. “Whether you fight several bulls over the course of an evening or just one, the fact is, every single time you put that red …

Is Sexless Dating Even Possible If You’re Over 40?

There are many reasons men and women have an interest in dating. They range from just wanting to have fun, the desire to meet interesting people, the need or want for sex, or the biggie: the hope of falling in love. But what if you have an interest in dating, but wish to take sex off the table? Is that realistic in today’s society and is it even possible when you’re over 40?

My gut reaction to this question is, why does dating have to equate to sex? Not just for dating over 40, but for any age? I look at dating and sex as going hand in hand if the chemistry and situation is right, but I think the two are mutually exclusive until that happens.

I think people put way too much pressure on themselves when it comes to sex. Having sex seems to be everyone’s biggest fear–men and women–in dating after divorce, which is understandable because it is a vulnerable, scary time where self-esteem isn’t at its best.

I have to wonder if there are expectations from daters when it comes to sex. I, personally have no expectations of sex or no sex when dating, and I don’t think there are any rules when it comes to dating and sex.

If someone tells me he or she went on a first date and had sex, I don’t judge. Do I think it is wise? In the majority of cases, no. But there are exceptions.

If someone says, “I’ve been out with this guy five times and we still haven’t slept together,” I don’t judge, either. One or both of the people have to feel like it is right to take things to a physical level, and if neither or one does, then sex is off the table, right?

The only thing I think is kind of gross, and again I’m not judging anyone else, but for me, I couldn’t sleep with someone who I suspect is sleeping with other women. I have written this before and people have written back and said, “Get over it!” But that’s just my stance. Everyone has to do what they feel is right for them.

Sex can be breathtaking and fun and exciting and mean the world with the right person. Sex can also be awkward and boring and considered a huge mistake if under the wrong circumstances or with the wrong person. Every situation is different.

My opinion is, if you want to engage in sexless dating, go out on dates with no expectations of sex. Assume you aren’t going to get physical and enjoy feeling safe in that comfort zone. Go on dates for companionship, interest, fun, to make new friends, and maybe even for a really nice kiss.

If you find yourself in a situation where someone expects sex, that’s his problem. No one should ever feel obligated or pressured to do anything he or she does not want to do. Also, make sure you never put yourself in a unsafe situation, like going back to the home of a guy you just met, or having him over.

On the other hand, you might surprise yourself. You might meet someone you really like and you might end up wanting to sleep with him. I’m sure it is hard to imagine if you go into dating with a sexless mindset), but I’ve seen it a thousand times in newly separated men and women. The spark ignites and it is totally unexpected. If and when that happens is dependent on the situation, the two people, and honestly, the stars. It’s beautiful to see, as a moment like that brings anyone who has ever had a broken heart hope and rejuvenation.

Just remember that dating doesn’t have to mean sex, unless you and the person you are dating wants that.

Take the pressure off yourself and just enjoy your sexless dating. As scary as it might seem, dating can be really really fun and interesting. Dating means the possibility of meeting people who become gifts in your life. And dare I say that finding love could happen? Don’t rule that out. Statistics show that a couple falls in love every 93 minutes!

Honestly, I just made that up, but one thing is for sure. You aren’t going to meet him (or her) if you sit on your couch. So, if you choose, engage in sexless dating and stop thinking too much about the pressure of taking off your clothes. Most of that pressure is probably coming from you.

Why It’s Never Too Late For Pre-Marital Counseling (Even After Years Of Marriage)

Even Game of Thrones Can’t Stop Calling Jon Snow “Pretty”

game of thrones jon snow

In a recent interview, Kit Harington reminded us, once again, that he’s more than just a pretty face. “I dislike the word ‘hunk,’” he said. “It’s a fucking ridiculous thing to be referred to as. It’s like calling a girl a ‘babe.’ It’s frankly offensive.”

This isn’t the first time Harington has raged against his “hunk status.” In March, he told Page Six that being reduced to a heartthrob is “slightly demeaning.” “I’m in a successful TV show in a kind of leading man way and it can sometimes feel like your art is being put to one side for your sex appeal. And I don’t like that.”

And yet, viewers cannot contain their lust for Jon Snow. (Even Zadie Smith is guilty of it!) But the guiltiest party of all? Game of Thrones. More than most of the females on the HBO show, the newly minted Lord Commander is always being called out for his beauty. In the most recent episode alone, he was called “pretty” twice. This Map Shows How Far There Is To Go In LGBT Rights — Even After Marriage Equality

A record 60 percent of Americans now favor same-sex marriage rights, according to a new Gallup poll, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights advocates await the U.S. Supreme Court’s forthcoming ruling on marriage equality with bated breath. Still, in a sobering reminder that true equality is still far from a national reality, a new surveying map finds that 61 percent of Americans reside in states where protections for the LGBT community leave a lot to be desired.

A project of the Colorado-based independent think tank Movement Advancement Project, “Mapping LGBT Equality in America” found that 61 percent of the U.S. LGBT population will “continue to live in states with medium or low legal protections, or that have outright hostile laws.”

In an attempt to show the “uneven and uncertain progress” of pro-LGBT legislation nationwide, Movement Advancement Project officials ranked each of the 50 U.S. states as high, low, medium or negative in regard to equality. They examined marriage and partnership recognition, adoption and parenting laws, workplace non-discrimination policies and the ability of a transgender person to change the gender marker on an official document such as a driver’s license.

Negative laws, organizers noted, were defined by those that specifically limit access to rights, services and programs for LGBT people, such as healthcare exclusions that bar transgender people from gender confirmation-related care and HIV criminalization laws, which disproportionately impact gay and bisexual men.

They found that 29 percent of the U.S. LGBT population were living in 13 states that they determined to have “negative equality,” including Louisiana, Kansas, Ohio, Michigan and Georgia.

On the flip side, 39 percent of that population called one of 12 “high equality” states or the District of Columbia home. States coming in on the “high” end of the scale were California, Oregon, Illinois and five out of the six New England states. (The sole northeastern outlier, New Hampshire, was deemed to have “medium equality.”)

Movement Advancement Project Executive Director Ineke Mushovic said that although a marriage equality victory at the Supreme Court would be “transformative,” additional legislation is “needed to fully protect LGBT people and their families.”

“One state may have high equality while a neighboring state has hostile laws,” Mushovic wrote in an email statement. “Or, a state may have high levels of equality for gay, lesbian and bisexual people while offering almost no legal protections to transgender people.”

The central message of the report is in line with a new book by renowned activist and HuffPost Gay Voices Editor-at-Large Michelangelo Signorile. In It’s Not Over: Getting Beyond Tolerance, Defeating Homophobia, and Winning True Equality, Signorile argues that the lives of LGBT Americans won’t change radically even if the Supreme Court rules in favor of same-sex marriage.

Many states, he notes, will still have limited anti-discrimination protections for LGBT employees, while homophobia and transphobia will still be prevalent in public schools even if same-sex marriage laws are in place.

He sees many LGBT rights advocates as being victims of “victory blindness,” because of advances in the fight for same-sex marriage, among other realms. Thus, many of those advocates are lead to believe that “living within this seductive moment of advances for LGBT rights, that we’ve ‘arrived’ and the rest of it is inevitable.”

9 Things You Can’t Change About Your Partner (So Don’t Even Try)

couple fighting retro

Love can move people to do things they never thought possible: Who among us ever believed they’d find someone worthy of sharing an order of fries? That’s the power of love, people.

As powerful as being in a relationship can be, there are some things that even love can’t change — namely who your partner is at his or her core. Below, experts weigh in with nine things you can’t change about your S.O., as hard as you may try.

1. Her relationship with her family.
You know that saying, “You don’t just marry a person; you marry his or her entire family”? It’s 100 percent true, said Karl Pillemer, a professor of human development at Cornell University and the author of 30 Lessons for Loving: Advice from the Wisest Americans on Love, Relationships, and Marriage

“People’s feelings about their own families are deeply ingrained, and they are not likely to alter significantly after you tie the knot,” Pillemer said. “You can come to compromise, but if your spouse and your family don’t get along, pressing for change is not likely to work. Instead, I’d tell you to give your S.O. a free pass to avoid unnecessary get-togethers. Family togetherness is nice, but not at the expense of your relationship with your partner.”

2. Whether he’s an extrovert or an introvert.

Opposites attract, but only up to a point: Somewhere down the line, you may wish your introverted partner was a little less inclined stay in for yet another night of Netflix — and he very well might wish you’d reign in your social butterfly ways.

“Your partner’s temperament is one thing you really can’t change,” said Samantha Rodman, a licensed psychologist and dating coach. “One great example is whether they are an extrovert, who relaxes by being around others, or an introvert, who relaxes by being alone. People who marry across extrovert/introvert divide will have to accept their partner’s needs for social interaction, or, conversely, for time alone to recharge.”

3. Her hobbies.
When work or family life gets stressful, hobbies and pastimes are what keep us going. Don’t bother trying to change your S.O.’s favorite activities, said relationship coach and writer Chris Armstrong.

“For one thing, your annoyance over their shopping or World of Warcraft love is probably much ado about nothing,” he said. “Individuality is important — we lose ourselves and lose control if hobbies are lost, plus the relationship as a whole can be harmed in the process. As I’ve told a client, if you know that a hobby is a big part of your S.O.’s life but it’s too much of a time-suck in your eyes, you two probably aren’t a good fit.”

4. His anger issues.
Many of us go into relationships believing we can change or fix things we don’t like about our partners. If the the trait in question is your S.O.’s anger issues, holding on to that belief can be downright dangerous.

“Explosive and disproportionate anger is one of the most common reasons people offer up for their marriages going south,” Pillemer said. “It’s an issue that needs to be taken with the utmost seriousness: Beware of a person who has a bad temper, who seems to get angry over nothing and, in particular, a person whose anger seems out of proportion to the situation. This is one personality characteristic that is almost impossible to change.”

5. Her religious beliefs.
While it’s certainly not always the case, having an interfaith relationship when you’re both deeply religious may prove problematic, Rodman said. Much of the time, the problems doesn’t arise until much later in the relationship, when a couple decides to have kids.

“People who were raised going to religious services frequently will often want to resume this practice when they have their own children, even if they didn’t attend services as a younger adult,” she said. “On the flip side, if your partner is an atheist and agnostic, it’s unlikely they’ll become devout believers just by virtue of being with someone with faith.”

6. His need for alone time.

You want to spend every waking moment with him, but he needs his space. You might read the request as hurtful, but consider the silver lining: Time apart often keeps a relationship fresh while ensuring that you both maintain your individuality, said Armstrong.

“When people are always together, they can feel as though the relationship is the only substantive thing going on in their lives,” he explained. “It can cause resentment. People want companionship but they also want meaningful connections and self-reflection to both recharge and keep their relationship fresh. Attempting to change a partner’s desire for alone time is a non-starter.”

7. Her need to plan every last detail.
You meticulously plan every last detail of your life, from when you’re taking your next vacation to when you want to have baby #1. Meanwhile, he’s a take-life-as-it-comes type. The divide may be endearing at first — you complement each other so well! — but eventually, it might become problematic . In any case, you’re not likely to change each other’s way of thinking, said clinical psychologist Jill Weber.

“Usually it is not a case of polar opposites, but rather a difference in degrees,” she said. “Some people are more regulated and are prepared to pay attention to the details of life while others are more likely to go with what they are feeling in the moment. The conflict plays out in a variety of ways — rules for how the children will be raised, spending and saving or even how to spend a weekend. Marriages where people vary strongly in their tolerance for delayed gratification can deteriorate to a condition where all of the energy in the relationship is going to trying to change the other.”

8. His thoughts on having kids.

If someone you’re seeing tells you in a straightforward way their true feelings on having kids, trust them. Moving forward with a relationship in the hopes that they’ll change their mind once you’re married or otherwise committed is a very risky gamble, said Armstrong.

“It’s perfectly reasonable for someone to say, ‘I can see myself having kids with the right partner’ but this is wholly different than someone going from ‘I don’t want kids’ to ‘I want kids,'” he said. “Some people do not want children because of the financial or time commitment required. Others have no desire because they don’t want to be responsible for another human being. Are they going to change? Not likely. Should you want them to? Absolutely not.”

9. Her sense of humor.
Whether or not you both crack up at Louis CK’s potty jokes may seem too minor to make this list, but having a similar sense of humor is more important than you realize.

“Older people I’ve interviewed have told me that some future marital problems can be diagnosed based on the question: ‘Do we think the same things are funny?'” Pillemer said. “Sense of humor is a strong indicator of compatibility. If you laugh at the same things, you are likely to see the world in similar ways. But there’s an even more important reason to take a careful look at your partner’s sense of humor: You will be stuck with it for many, many years. If his idea of high humor involves practical jokes and yours doesn’t, rest assured that you will not find the hand buzzer or the whoopee cushion more hilarious fifty years from now.”

12 Things Couples Still Won’t Do In Front Of Each Other (Even After Years Together)

One of the best parts about being in a long-term relationship is getting to that point where you feel totally comfortable around each other. That said, there are some lines that shouldn’t be crossed, no matter how long you’ve been together.

Below are 12 habits that, in the interest of romance and privacy, are best kept on the D.L.

1. Going to the bathroom. Peeing is fine. Pooping? Not so much.

Embedded via Giphy

2. And while we’re on the subject, the same goes for farting.

3. Plucking ingrown hairs of the pubic variety.

4. Or bleaching/waxing any area where the sun don’t shine.

5. Putting on Spanx. It’s not a graceful process, OK?

6. Examining blackheads or popping pimples in a magnified mirror.

7. For the ladies, removing your ‘stache and/or stubborn chin hairs.

8. For the gents, scratching your balls.

9. Taking out your Invisalign. Because spit. Spit everywhere.

10. Inserting or removing a tampon.

11. Stepping on the scale. Ain’t nobody need to see that number but you.

12. Picking your nose. Actually it’s best not to do this at all, unless it’s with a tissue. In private.

This Possible ‘Harry Potter’ Couple Would Ruin Harry Potter’s Childhood Even More

Harry Potter might want to keep away from the latest edition of The Quibbler.

Following a recent Instagram post, the online speculation is that Harry’s dad, James Potter, aka actor Robbie Jarvis, may be dating Luna Lovegood, aka actress Evanna Lynch. And if Harry’s childhood wasn’t ruined before, it definitely is now:

That photo isn’t all, though. Despite the fact that E! wasn’t given conformation from Jarvis’ reps that the two were dating, other cute photos just seem to add to the evidence. Take this one for example:

Trying on hats with @msevylynch. Which one of us looks better? #fancy

A photo posted by Robbie (@awildrobbieattacks) on

And check out this one where they apparently took Polyjuice Potion and transformed into owls. Nice try, James and Luna, but we know it’s you:

Owls!

A photo posted by Robbie (@awildrobbieattacks) on

So why is this such a big deal? OK, first, let’s skip past the fact that in “Harry Potter,” Luna came in during Ginny’s year and is younger than Harry. Just forget that. But didn’t Harry also take Luna to Professor Slughorn’s Christmas party? Now his dad might be taking her out? Oh, and what about Lily Potter, James? What about Lily?

Voldemort has done some pretty messed up things to Harry Potter before, but this might be crossing the line.

That being said, we wish all the happiness in the world to the potential couple because they are just actors and Harry Potter isn’t real. Or that’s what people want you to believe, anyway.

Representatives for the actors did not immediately respond to The Huffington Post’s requests for comment.

No One Is Safe From Black Twitter. Not Even Black People.

As anyone criticized by Black Twitter can tell you, the cultural phenomenon is one hell of a force to reckon with.

Because of it, the Twittersphere sees constant conversation surrounding the Black experience and highlights issues often overlooked, and sometimes created by, mainstream media. Alongside this, explosive hashtags are also birthed calling out people, publications and general status quo. Just ask Marie-Claire, Vogue Magazine and the Associated Press.

But just because Black Twitter goes after offensive slip ups made by white people, doesn’t mean black people are exempt from the same fury.

In the spirit of true equality, no one is safe from Black Twitter — and the proof of it lies in two recent hashtags.

In their coverage of the finding of black man Otis Byrd hanging from a tree in Mississippi last week, CNN laid emphasis on the man’s criminal record. Relevant or not, Black Twitter didn’t take nicely to said focus when so few details about the surrounding circumstances were available to contextualize his life and death. Thus, #CNNBeLike was born.

Likewise, recent controversial remarks on racism from black celebrities such as Common, Kanye and Raven-Symone have of late stirred a relatively similar response from Black Twitter. And boy did the #BlackCelebsBeLike sarcasm sting every bit as bad as it’s precursor.

You can hate Black Twitter all you want — or commend it for its brutal honesty — but you have to admit they don’t play favorites.

Check out some of Black Twitter’s jabs below, and tell us your favorite hashtags in the comments below!

5 Signs He Might Be Wrong For You, Even If The Sex Is Great

Being in love is blinding and this can be ignorant bliss, or simply a poor choice when your goal is to find the right mate for you. Let’s be clear, finding your “one” may not be on your agenda yet, and that’s fine, but for those that are seeking true love, and lifelong compatibility, there are important things to consider outside of sexual attraction and “chemistry”. Future problems tend to be about avoiding those repetitive conflicts and disagreements that are rarely resolved.

Even ‘Sesame Street’ Seems To Have Poked Fun At Deflategate

Hey, Patriots, the “Sesame Street” word of the day is “inflate.”

As Bleacher Report, Sports Illustrated, and sports fans on Twitter noticed, it appears the long-running kids show got in a sly dig at New England’s “Deflategate” Friday by airing a 2013 episode that features the word “inflate.”

But a representative for the show told The Huffington Post that it’s “pure coincidence.”

“Inflate” is what the Patriots allegedly didn’t do to their footballs when they beat the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship Game. The team is accused of having slightly deflated the game balls, which makes them easier to catch, and it’s become a thing as the Super Bowl approaches. Even Vice President Joe Biden has chimed in on the matter.

In the “Street” clip above, the character Murray introduces the word. Below, Don Cheadle and Elmo celebrate “inflate” with their own moment.

Who knew that “deflategate” would blow up like this?

Why Even A 12-Month Ban On Blood Donations From Gay Men Makes No Sense

The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday ended the lifetime ban on blood donations from men who have sex with men.

But the agency said it would continue to bar donations by men who have had a sexual encounter with another man in the previous year, disappointing prominent gay rights groups and HIV/AIDS researchers, who called the yearlong waiting period medically unnecessary and unscientific. The FDA said the change “will better align the deferral period with that of other men and women at increased risk for HIV infection.”

“The one-year deferral notion constitutes symbolic progress, but is not any more warranted than a lifetime ban,” wrote Dr. Eli Adashi, professor of medical science at Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School, in an email to HuffPost.

The 31-year-old ban on donations from gay and bisexual men had its roots in the AIDS fear that was pervasive when the disease first appeared in the nation’s blood supply. Since then, HIV testing has gotten faster and more accurate. Additionally, testing of donated blood for HIV and other diseases is routine.

Over the years, pressure mounted for the FDA to change the ban. The American Medical Association recommended that gay and bisexual men be evaluated individually, and that risk be assessed through behavior, not sexual orientation.

“The lifetime ban on blood donation for men who have sex with men is discriminatory and not based on sound science,” said Dr. William Kobler, an AMA spokesman.

Members of Congress spoke out against the ban.

Gay rights groups also advocated that the FDA drop the gay blood ban, and replace it with screening questions that address specific risky sexual behaviors regardless of sexual orientation or gender.

Aspects of such a system have been in place in Italy since 2001. There, potential blood donors are assessed individually with questionnaires and face-to-face interviews with practitioners.

Adashi co-authored an op-ed in the July issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association that argued a 12-month deferral on donations from gay men is “equally arbitrary” to a lifelong ban.

“Sexual orientation is not a disqualifier; instead, sexual orientation is one component of individualized risk assessment,” Adashi wrote. Research suggests that Italy’s new policy hasn’t led to a disproportionate increase in HIV-positive blood donations from gay men.

The FDA shift still leaves a large swath of gay men — those who only have sex with HIV-negative partners or practice safe sex with HIV-positive partners — unable to donate blood. At the same time, people who may be at risk for HIV are not barred from donating.

Beyond the discriminatory nature of the ban on donations, there is a real need for more blood.

The Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, which studies LGBT issues, has calculated the number of men who would likely donate, and the pints of blood that would become available, under three scenarios: completely lifting the ban, a 12-month deferral, and a five-year deferral.

As you can see, a 12-month deferral excludes thousands of potential donations from the nation’s blood supply.

The risk of getting HIV from a blood transfusion is incredibly low. According to the FDA, one in 2 million cases are acquired through transfusions.

Brad Pitt Jams On Tambourine With Bruno Mars, And His Cameo Isn't Even The Best Part

At 50, Brad Pitt is still a sex machine and he gave us another reason to think so on Saturday night.

The “12 Years a Slave” actor joined Bruno Mars onstage for a surprise performance at his nonprofit’s gala in New Orleans. Pitt jammed along on the tambourine while Mars belted out a cover of James Brown’s “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine.”

Mars was the headliner for Pitt’s Make It Right charity event, which cost $ 1,000 a head, and raised funds for the organization that builds green homes for people in need.

Founded in 2007, the organization first aimed to revitalize New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and has now expanded to build apartments for veterans with disabilities in Newark, N.J. The nonprofit is also working on a community development in Kansas City, Mo., according to its website.

The crowd, which was packed with other Hollywood heavyweights including Sandra Bullock and Chris Rock, according to US Weekly, lapped up Pitt’s number and he returned the love right back.

“I love New Orleans,” Pitt reportedly told the crowd prior to the performance, according to E Online. “And I’m extremely proud of the lower 9th ward community.”

'Masters Of Sex' Gets Even Sexier In Wild, New Trailer

We’ve all seen enough Justin Timberlake movies to know that “Friends with Benefits” just doesn’t work.

Season 1 of “Masters of Sex” left off with William Masters (Michael Sheen), who is obviously a big JT fan, trying to explain that to Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan), and the drama just snowballs (actually more like avalanches) into Season 2. The new trailer, first seen at The Hollywood Reporter, reveals fornicating with sister-in-laws, good old-fashioned fist fights and clandestine rendezvous leading to, what else, more fornicating.

Season 2 of “Masters of Sex” premieres July 13 at 10:00 p.m. ET on Showtime.
