Everything you need to know about the CMA Awards

Put on your cowboy boots! It’s almost time for country music’s biggest night. If it’s anything like in past years, the 51st Annual Country Music Awards will feature heartwarming performances, comedic sketches from the hosts and exciting award reveals. Here is everything you need to know before Wednesday night. Who’s Hosting? This year’s CMA Awards hosts came as a surprise to no one: 2017 will be Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood‘s 10th consecutive year hosting the show. In their last nine ceremonies, the hilarious pair have had some unforgettable moments. There was the 2008 comedic parody “Mamas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Kanye,” which Paisley (a 14-time CMA Awards winner) penned, and the 2011 “Tim and Faith Have Barbies” sketch, which was Underwood’s idea. The cohosts prepared for their ‘Gangnam Style’ dance onstage in 2012 with three weeks of practice and coaching from a former Michael Jackson choreographer, they revealed at a CMA Festival event in June. But perhaps the most iconic bit by the dynamic duo happened in 2014. Paisley took the stage and revealed to the world that five-months-pregnant Underwood would be having a boy: “I’m so happy! I know something y’all don’t know!” Paisley said to the crowd before revealing the baby’s sex. Who’s Performing? JUST ANNOUNCED! First #CMAawards performers revealed including @GarthBrooks, @CarrieUnderwood, @LittleBigTown AND MORE!! Watch them perform LIVE Wed, Nov. 8 on @ABCNetwork. See all performers at CMAawards.com A post shared by Country Music Association (@cma) on Oct 18, 2017 at 6:00am PDT This year’s ceremony will feature performances by some of country music’s biggest stars, including Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks, Miranda Lambert, Thomas Rhett, Brothers Osborne, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Little Big Town, Old Dominion, Jon Pardi, Chris Stapleton and Alan Jackson — to name a few. Jackson is a 2017 Country Music Hall of Fame inductee who has received 81 CMA Awards nominations throughout his career; this year will be his 24th CMA performance. But beyond those performances, the show will also highlight some exciting collaborations. Reba McEntire — the most nominated female in CMA Awards history — will be paired with her competition for Female Vocalist of the Year: Kelsea Ballerini. The 24-year-old “Yeah Boy” singer is a five-time award nominee, and 62-year-old Reba is a 50-time nominee. FormerOne Direction star Niall Horan will make his CMA performance debut with country’s Maren Morris to perform their pop-country crossover song “Going Blind,” which Horan released on his debut solo album, Flicker, last month. Other collaborating pairs will include Dierks Bentley and Rascal Flatts, who are nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year and Vocal Group of the Year, as well as Brad Paisley and Kane Brown. What About the Nominees? Miranda Lambert is this year’s top nominee with five nods total, and her 11th nomination in the Female Vocalist category, which she has won a record six consecutive times between 2010 and 2015. Lambert has a total of 44 CMA Awards nominations spanning her career and is the most awarded woman in CMA Awards history, nabbing 12 trophies since 2010. Tying for second-most nominations are Little Big Town and Keith Urban, who each earned four nominations total. Other notable include people from all throughout the entire country music sphere: Garth Brooks, Luke Bryan, Chris Stapleton, Rascal Flatts, Florida Georgia Line, Lady Antebellum and many more. Taylor Swift‘s name even appears on the nominee list: The country-turned-pop singer is up for Song of the Year for her songwriting on LBT’s hit “Better Man.” Who Did NOT Make the Nominee List? Many were surprised that country star Blake Shelton — five-time Vocalist of The Year and a current coach on The Voice — was not nominated for a single category. Another list absentee is “They Don’t Know” singer Jason Aldean, who recently won Entertainer of the Year at the 2017 American Country Music Awards in April. Although Lambert has the most nods of any artist, some fans were surprised she did not receive one for the Entertainer of The Year category, which has no female nominees this year. Read the full list of nominations here. Who Decides the Winners? The nominees and winners are chosen by the 6,300 industry professional members of Country Music Association. Established in 1958, CMA was the first trade organization dedicated to a specific genre of music. The first CMA Awards show was held in 1967 and it has since become the longest-running annual music awards program on network television. This year’s CMA Awards will be held at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. ET. The show will air live on ABC.

What if you couldn’t touch anything in the outside world? Never breathe in the fresh air, feel the sun warm your face…or kiss the boy next door? “Everything, Everything” tells the unlikely love story of Maddy, a smart, curious and imaginative 18-year-old who due to an illness cannot leave the protection of the hermetically sealed environment within her house, and Olly, the boy next door who won’t let that stop them. Maddy is desperate to experience the much more stimulating outside world, and the promise of her first romance. Gazing through windows and talking only through texts, she and Olly form a deep bond that leads them to risk everything to be together…even if it means losing everything.

Port 101: Everything You Need to Know About This Oft-Misunderstood Wine

port

Slowly, port is shedding its image of old-fashioned grandeur. While the sweet after-dinner quaff still suffers from stodgy connotations of a pipe-smoking grandfather reading Proust by the fireplace, this antiquated perception is unfortunate. Like sherry, which has seen an explosive nationwide resurgence thanks to bartenders weaving it into their contemporary concoctions, port is a fortified wine modern-day imbibers are beginning to rediscover. Sipped on its own, it’s a silky complement to the likes of post-prandial bleu cheese and bittersweet chocolate ganache tarts, or can even be relished alongside pork tenderloin; incorporated into cocktails, it adds a luxurious heft welcomed in autumnal tipples. Behold, an abbreviated primer on Portugal’s oft-misunderstood wine.

What Is Port?

In the same company as sherry, Madeira, and Marsala, port is a fortified wine—not to be confused with dessert wines like foie gras–happy Sauternes from France or Tokaji from Hungary, which boast large quantities of natural sugar. A fortified wine means its fermentation process has been halted by a jolt of grape spirit or brandy. This additional surge of alcohol ensures residual sugar and the sweet, lush mouthfeel synonymous with port. History buffs, take note: This process traces its roots back to the 18th century, when a spat between Great Britain and France led the Brits to Portugal to indulge their usually French-sated wine habits. A reinforcement of brandy ensured the wine they procured would still be fresh after the long haul back home. A roll call of such well-known port producers, including Taylor’s, Croft, Sandeman, and Graham’s, signifies how intertwined port’s history is with Great Britain’s.

Port is made exclusively in Portugal’s remote, verdant Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the northern part of the country that is hailed as the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. On intensely steep hillsides, narrow terraces of vineyards teem with indigenous grape varieties like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão.

The mountainous landscape is staggering, best glimpsed from a train winding its way up from charming Oporto, the coastal city from which the wine takes its name. Although the grapes are grown in the Douro Valley, they have long been brought down the river in rabelo boats to be aged and bottled in the more weather-opportune caves of Vila Nova de Gaia, then marketed and exported from Oporto. At least one night in Oporto, say, dining on cod with “exploding” olives at Cantinho do Avillez and sleeping at the glamorous wine-themed The Yeatman hotel—where a treatment at the Caudalíe Vinothérapie Spa is mandatory—provides an urban contrast to the appealing rusticity of the Douro.

The Murderer’s Row, developed by cocktail educator Andy Seymour, features Fonseca Bin No. 27, bourbon, pear juice, muddled blackberries, lemon juice, and agave syrup.

What Are the Styles?

Given port’s tremendous aging potential, it is available in a number of (admittedly confusing) varieties. These are the different types one is most likely to encounter on a wine list:

White port: Port immediately conjures the image of a brooding red wine, but less well-known white port is its drier, zippier sibling. Bartenders, realizing its potential as a quenching alternative to gin, are now keen to meld it with tonic in myriad permutations. In this form, or simply on the rocks with a slice of citrus, it makes for a perfect summertime aperitif.
Bottle to try: Fonseca Siroco

Pink port: Spawned from red grapes, pink port is a relative newcomer to the category. Fresh and light-bodied, it can be served chilled and mixes rather nicely in bright cocktails.
Bottle to try: Croft Pink Port

Ruby port: Affordable and accessible, ruby is a great entry point for port drinkers. Comprised of a blend of grapes that hasn’t been aged for more than three years, it’s fruity and meant to be savored young.
Bottle to try: Fonseca Bin No. 27

Tawny port: This blended port, a go-to companion for dessert, acquires its distinctive amber hue from prolonged aging in oak before bottling. When a tawny is designated a colheita, it means the bottle contains grapes from one stellar vintage.
Bottle to try: Taylor Fladgate 20-Year-Old

Vintage port: This top-notch port is the most revered, but constitutes just a tiny portion of port sales. Aged in a barrel, then unfiltered and further aged in the bottle, it acquires complexity (and crust) and stars the grapes of one spectacular vintage. Save it for special occasions.
Bottle to try: Croft 2011 Vintage Port

Late-bottled vintage port: Less expensive than coveted vintage port, these wines spend more time softening in wood and are ready to be drunk as soon as they are bottled.
Bottle to try: Niepoort 2011 Late Bottled Vintage

The By the Fireside, served at Manhattan bar the Up & Up, is made with Croft 10-Year-Old tawny port, Café du Monde chicory coffee syrup, lemon juice, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

How Do You Drink It?

Port, in its naked, unadulterated state, is firmly entrenched in nightcap territory with good reason: It’s a heady send-off that lingers. Splurge on one of the great vintage ports and one might not crave anything else beyond good company and music. But it would also mesh nicely with aged Gouda or hearty venison. A ruby, abundant in fruit flavors, is a natural complement to desserts like blackberry cobbler or a juicy juxtaposition to a platter of smoked meats, while washing down salted almonds with white port is a magical sensation. Whether it’s with caramel flan or a chocolate layer cake, tawnies are what to seek out when the sweet tooth strikes.

But there’s now another alluring way to acquaint oneself with port, and that’s by drinking cocktails. Adrian Bridge, CEO of the Fladgate Partnership, which encompasses the brands Taylor’s, Fonseca, and Croft, says that Croft Pink was developed with cocktails especially in mind. “Port has an immense range of styles. The sommelier cares about the vintage port, but give the more accessible Croft Pink to a bartender and there are no rules. Bartenders have proven that port isn’t this scary thing that can only be sipped to toast the Queen of England,” he jokes.

At The Yeatman, which Bridge also runs, the Port Tonic is a staple, blending one part white port with two parts tonic, ice, and mint. An ideal summer tipple, it has been reimagined by countless bartenders, who turn to unexpected ingredients like basil and marmalade to give it depth. As the colder months wear on, however, it’s time for more nuanced creations like the holiday-perfect Coffee Cocktail. This frothy classic, which first appeared in the circa-1887 third edition of Jerry Thomas’s cocktail behemoth The Bartenders Guide, contains no energizing caffeine, but does unite ruby port and Cognac with a whole egg and simple syrup.

“The use of port in cocktails creates a great flavor combination because, depending on the style, it can add sweetness, tannins, and color at the same time,” says Alba Huerta, proprietress of hit Houston bar Julep. “The sugar levels are high, but the traces of wine production are also present. It can usually keep for a few weeks, unlike wine that keeps for a few days, so you can use it several times without the concern of it turning too quickly.”

Last holiday season, patrons of Cure, in New Orleans, were treated to the Bird of Paradise, mingling white port with Bittermens’ Commonwealth Tonic Liqueur, lemon juice, and whole nutmeg. Those who settle into Chicago joint Parson’s Chicken & Fish for the night can wait for their hush puppies with a Purple Drink, a mélange of table wine, port, and orange blossom water that tastes like a melted Popsicle. In New York City, at Brooklyn hangout Dram, Tonia Guffey makes the Feed Me Diamonds, an ode to the MNDR song of the same name. “It’s so eerie and beautiful,” Guffey points out. “It made me want to craft a drink around it.” The result was mixing Taylor Fladgate 10 Year Old Tawny Port with Armagnac, lemon juice, crème de cassis, and cinnamon simple syrup capped off with champagne.

“To be fed diamonds was something people would allegedly do to overthrow tyrannical figures. In this song, the dictator is her head fighting with her heart. She’s consumed by love. She says, ‘What’s the good in being good?’ To me that was like, ‘Yeah, fuck being good and behaving. Give me luxuries.’ So naturally I picked up a rich, round 10-year tawny port because it’s so decadent and elegant,” explains Guffey. “While it makes an excellent sipper, mixing with port is really sneaky and awesome because it’s got the body to hold up to spirits and the complexity is really wonderful. After shaking it up, I topped it with sparkling Brut, because again, if you’re going to be bad, be downright sinful.”

Everything You Need to Know About Day 9 of Paris Fashion Week

louis vuitton spring 2016

Fashion Week went out with a bang today with standout shows from Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu. Find all the top stories from those events and more here.

1. “What a time to be alive” has become a popular Twitter adage most often employed with sarcasm, but at Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière focused his hawk eyes on the ins and outs of our contemporary era, sending out clothes inspired by and suited for the now. We’re calling his leather jackets, low-slung shorts, and crop tops the ideal pieces for a “digital bohemia.”

2. Ghesquière’s front row guests were just as enthused with his Spring collection—hear what Michelle Williams, Alicia Vikander, and Miranda Kerr think in our exclusive video.

3. Get to know the new models who walked at Louis Vuitton today, from art student Teddy Quinlivan to brand-new Dominican face Luisana Gonzalez.

4. The fashion world awoke to news this morning that Balenciaga had named a new artistic director of collections: Vetements’s Demna Gvasalia.

5. Plaids mixed with tulle mixed with glittering boots at Miu Miu in an expression of moody toughness that only Mrs. Prada could execute.

6. The streets of Paris are still running over with street style—see Hanne Gaby Odiele, Tati Cotliar, and more fashion stars in our slideshow.

8. At Moncler Gamme Rouge, models tiptoed through a field of daisies in Giambattista Valli’s latest for the house.

Everything You Need to Know About Day Five of Paris Fashion Week

paris fashion week

1. At Haider Ackermann guests were treated to a rainbow of vibrant colors, from the lemon yellow of loose cargo pants to the sea blue of a velvet blazer.

2. “It’s like an explosion at Lauduree!” exclaimed Haider Ackermann of the multicolor Mohawks at his Spring show, which model Aymeline Valade called “more phoenix than parakeet.”

3. Buzz cuts and blazers were the heroes of Jonny Johansson’s spring showing at Acne Studios.

4. Activism might have been the name of the game at Vivienne Westwood, but you can’t argue with her embellished blazers or bias-cut dresses.

5. It’s hard to say which was bigger at Comme des Garçons: the models’ hair or Rei Kawakubo’s plush creations.

6. Guillaume Henry sent out his sophomore effort at Nina Ricci. Romy Schneider and ’90s models were his muses.

7. Speaking of the ’90s, Jean Colonna returned to the Paris schedule with some not-so-basic essentials in luxe fabrications.

8. Are nose rings the new engagement rings? Delfina Delettrez’s latest will make you consider the option.

Everything You Need to Know About Day Three of Paris Fashion Week

paris fashion week lanvin

The fashion scene was abuzz with the news out of Paris Fashion Week’s third day, from the supermodels on Balmain’s runway to the upside-down ones on Rick Owens’s. Get the scoop on those stories and more here.

1. The day started at Chloé, where Clare Waight Keller crafted an ode to women recognizable by one name only: “Kate, Chloé, Cecilia, Corinne, Rosemary, Emma, and Courtney.” The results ranged from rave-ready pants to dreamy day dresses.

2. Julien Dossena sent out pieces at Paco Rabanne that played on fashion’s dual obsessions: athleisure and nostalgia. We think they’d fare best at this summer’s music festivals, places where the cool factor is just as important as the comfort one.

3. Olivier Rousteing presented a slinky safari at Balmain today that culminated in a series of cascading ruffles.

4. At Balmain, Sam McKnight readied Rousteing’s army with bombshell ponytails, telling Vogue.com, “She’s sexy, yes, but she’s really more of a warrior.”

Diplo and Travis Scott at Balmain Spring 2016 Ready-to-Wear

Photo: Alessandro Garofalo / Indigitalimages.com

5. Behold, the week’s most exciting star snaps, including the unlikely pairing of Diplo and Travis Scott at Balmain.

6. Rick Owens, Paris’s resident fashion philosopher, offered a treatise of women’s strength, harnessing models together for their march out. Oh, and there was some relatable ready-to-wear, too.

7. There was a certain “greatest hits” mood at Alber Elbaz’s Spring collection for Lanvin, with reworkings of the themes he knows and loves: deconstruction, sequins, loose glamour, and the house of Lanvin itself.

8. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself reaching for the bobby pins and bows this weekend. Guido Palau’s artfully messed chignons at Lanvin were as charming as Elbaz’s clothes.

Kevin Systrom, Alessandro Michele, and Anna Wintour

Photographed by Delphine Achard

9. Phoebe, Alessandro, Donatella, and more turned out for Vogue’s dinner in honor of Instagram’s Kevin Systrom.

10. Prints are ruling the streets of Paris. See the best street style looks in our exclusive photos by Phil Oh.

10. From DHL tees to velvet midi dresses, Vetements’s Spring collection covered a lot of ground. Mixed in with the oversize blazers and shrunken corsets was plenty for the brand’s cool-kid customer to fawn over.

11. Just because Gosha Rubchinskiy doesn’t show a women’s collection doesn’t mean he can’t make an appearance at Paris Fashion Week. The Russian designer tried his hand at modeling, opening the Vetements show.

12. Get a closer look at The Row’s one-off presentation at the Château de Courances, complete with live music and plenty of French fare.

Everything You Need to Know About Day Two of Paris Fashion Week

maison margiela spring 2016

It’s safe to say that a little glitz has made its way to Paris Fashion Week. It was there in the crystal trimming at Maison Margiela, the sequin embellishment at Dries Van Noten, and—most of all—the gilded affair held in the Tuileries by Pat McGrath and Vogue.com to celebrate the launch of her first product, a shimmering gold pigment. Catch up on all that news and more from the City of Light, below.

1. In between the shows, Pat McGrath and Vogue took over the Tuileries offering golden makeovers to lucky guests. Among the revelers were Bella Hadid, Stella Maxwell, and Jamie Bochert.

2. But before McGrath hit the Tuileries, she crafted a space-age silvery look at Maison Margiela.

Photo: Kim Weston Arnold / Indigitalimages.com

3. But what of the Margiela looks? John Galliano sent out one of his most commercially viable collections yet, with cropped blazers, ankle-length skirts, and plenty of accessories. That isn’t to say it wasn’t an artful trip through his many inspirations, from ’50s ladies to Japanese geishas.

4. Galliano’s bias-cut skirts at Maison Margiela know no gender. Meet the male models who strutted out on the designer’s catwalk.

5. With flowy blouses printed with phrases lifted from Paul Nougé poems (“Je suis belle on me l’a dit” appeared on a roomy blouse), the Lemaire woman was feeling good this season. Perhaps because, as one editor confided, she was planning on dropping $ 1,000 on pieces from the brand’s Uniqlo collab.

6. One can always count on Dries Van Noten for a phantasmagoria of color and print, but this season was really something. Inspired by women of impeccable—and adventurous—personal style like Madonna and Peggy Guggenheim, the designer sent out swirling furniture prints, sequin embellished jackets, and semi-transparent turtlenecks that added a surreal styling twist.

7. “Location, location, location!” goes the adage about New York City real estate, and as two New Yorkers, Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen must know it well. They chose a château outside Paris to stage a show for their top clientele, presenting their shirred chiffon minidresses and flowing caftans against a romantic scene.

8. What Virgil Abloh does with the simple inspiration of jeans and a T-shirt at Off-White is anything but basic. See the designer’s latest in experimentation here.

9. Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant’s debut at Courrèges focused on updated permutations of the Courrèges classics.

Everything That Happened on Day Four of New York Fashion Week

hanne gaby odiele sweatshirt

From the front row with David Beckham to the gardens of Opening Ceremony, we covered a lot of ground on Day Four of New York Fashion Week. Get all the essential information from the day, below.

1. The day started at Victoria Beckham’s show, where David and Brooklyn Beckham sat front row and breezy, surf-inspired separates came down the catwalk.

2. But the focus wasn’t only on Victoria Beckham’s runway looks, the designer also pulled off quite the wardrobe change during the day too.

3. Top models of the world united at Diane von Furstenberg. We’re talking Karlie, Jourdan, Gigi, Bella, Kendall, and more women so famous, they only need one name.

4.  Diane von Furstenberg has only to look in the mirror to find a beauty muse—models sported a look much like Von Furstenberg’s own.

5. Streetwear? Au contraire. Public School’s new muse is more high priestess than high punk.

6. Prabal Gurung’s show started off with singing monks. The moment of peacefulness was for Nepal, Gurung’s homeland struck with a damaging earthquake earlier this year.

7. Tired of seeing fashion shows in just two dimensions online? Gurung has a solution for that: 360-degree photography.

8. It’s business in the front, party in the back: Hood By Air’s derriere-revealing jumpsuit.

9. Model Hanne Gaby Odiele brought feminism to the streets with her Acne Studios sweater.

10. The day closed out with a dance performance at Opening Ceremony, inspired by the dance costumes Frank Lloyd Wright designed for his third wife.

John Oliver’s Guide To Everything Students Need To Know

In many parts of the country, the conclusion of Labor Day weekend marks the start of the school year, and while “Last Week Tonight” was off for the holiday, host John Oliver recorded a video that has everything students really need to know

Sort of.

In the four-minute YouTube clip, Oliver shares a bit of wisdom for each of the major subjects taught in school (and he tries to do it without swearing… but doesn’t quite succeed).

For American history: “Google ‘Warren G. Harding penis named Jerry’ right now,” Oliver advises, referring to the 29th president. “And you will not be disappointed.”

Oliver also touches on world history, especially the European explorers and colonists.

“Now, as adults, you will realize that these men were basically genocidal lunatics,” he says. “But for now, enjoy thinking of them as thrilling adventurers and discoverers.”

Oliver manages to get around to math, biology, chemistry and English as well — all within those four minutes — and even has a “Guide To Who Dies At The End” for many of the books students will be assigned to read for class.

Check it out in the clip above.

Stalley “Voila,” Kevin Gates “La Familia,” 2 Chainz “Everything I Know” & More | Daily Visuals 9.4.15

Stalley continues to go hard with the visuals for cuts off his latest project, The Laughing Introvert. Steady mobbing with his Blue Collar Gang, the man from the Buckeye State pays a visit to Bucktown USA and politics on the Brooklyn Bridge in his latest clip, “Voila.”

And no, this doesn’t mean LeBron is any closer to joining a New York basketball team.

Even with all the backlash and petitions to have him banned from performing in your city going around, the ever controversial Kevin Gates remains as defiant as ever in both real life and in his video to “La Familia.” Ducking authorities while torturing helpless individuals, the kid who likes to kick more than just rhymes seems to draw a lot of parallels between his art and his actions.

Everything Is Rent

In the wake of the arrests of the CEO and several employees of Rentboy.com for federal charges of racketeering and promoting prostitution, I couldn’t help but think of a line from one of my favorite musicals, Rent. A show about the bohemian subculture of the East Village, which includes queer people, HIV+ people and yes, sex workers, the opening number about the struggles of paying rent and avoiding eviction, ends with: “‘Cause everything is rent.”

In the case of Rentboy.com, that line takes on new dimensions. For so many LGBT individuals, sex work is a necessity, in order to pay for rent… and food, healthcare and so on.

That is why my organization GLAD, along with other LGBT legal organizations, supported Amnesty International’s recent resolution calling for the complete decriminalization of sex work. For so many LGBT people who have been rejected by families and experienced disproportionate rates of homelessness, poverty, discrimination and violence, participation in street economies is often critical to survival.

As one LGBT and anti-conversion therapy activist Sam Brinton illustrated in a Facebook message to me: “I am being overwhelmed with messages of GBT young men who are in fear of having to return home because the main and most secure connection they had to income through escorting is now gone.” He added that many of these young men had run away from their homes because their families were forcing them into conversion therapy.

While criminalizing the industry may seem to make intuitive sense to address this problem, it only makes things worse for this already vulnerable population. It forces many to work in hidden or remote places where they are more vulnerable to violence. It also impedes sex workers’ ability to negotiate condom use and set other boundaries. That is why the World Health Organization has argued that criminalization increases the risk of HIV transmission and instead advocated for a harm reduction approach.

Imagine instead of having to negotiate money and safety in a dark alley on the street, a sex worker could state those boundaries in an online profile, and negotiate a price and location over email. Or even better, imagine if a sex worker could see rating scores of the person purchasing his services, similar to Uber, or even file a complaint against a customer for misconduct or violence and have that customer’s membership on the website revoked.

Wouldn’t such a site actually enhance the agency and well-being of sex workers?

Now, I don’t know if Rentboy.com is such a site. According to the Rentboy’s chief executive, Jeffrey Hurant, “There is no place on this website where somebody says I’ll have sex for money because that is against the law.” Rentboy.com is entitled to its legal defense against the criminal charges. Those who oppose criminalization of sex work should still respect the right of those accused of such charges to defend themselves against the laws, as they currently exist.

But that is not the ultimate point. The critical question is not whether Rentboy.com violated the law as it stands, but rather why the federal government would devote such significant time and resources to combatting this perceived “problem.” As I’ve written before, the root of much of the discrimination and persecution that persists against the LGBT community, and specifically gay men, is the deep discomfort people still hold against our sexualities. Sadly, there is a long history of such state-sanctioned and targeted attacks on LGBT identities and sexualities – from Oscar Wilde to Stonewall.

In fact, GLAD was founded in 1978 in response to a police sting against gay men in the Boston Public Library bathrooms. Responding to citizen complaints about men soliciting sex, Boston police stepped up their surveillance. In two weeks, police arrested 103 men on charges ranging from indecent exposure to “open and gross lewdness” — a felony. Even though every defendant was ultimately exonerated, many lives were destroyed in the wake of those targeted attacks.

Today, many sex workers have had their livelihoods stripped away by the Rentboy.com raid. Yet, even if sex workers have the option of earning a living in other ways, shouldn’t their choice to do so through sex work be a fundamental aspect of their right to bodily autonomy, similar to those who work legally in the porn industry?

In the musical Rent, one of the main characters Mimi is an HIV-positive exotic dancer at a local club. In explaining her profession to her love interest, Roger, she sings, “It’s a living.” The rest of the musical follows her journey, from her AZT regimen, to love and breakup, to drug abuse and homelessness — until at the end of the musical she is near her deathbed. While ultimately Mimi survives, the same cannot be said for so many of the most vulnerable members of our community.

Rent was one of the most successful and longest running musicals on Broadway. Shouldn’t we be treating real people with the same compassion and empathy as we do fictional characters? While everything may be for rent, unfortunately too many in our community are being left out in the cold. It’s time to ensure equal opportunities for all in the LGBT community, and until that day comes, respect and protect the many ways that LGBT people struggle to pay the rent.

Everything You Need To Know About Moving On After An Affair

Moving on with your life after you’ve been cheated on can feel like an impossible task — especially if your S.O. decides to stay with his or her affair partner.

First, you need to give yourself permission to feel everything: bitterness, sorrow, confusion, rage (in moderation).

But at some point you need to move on and not let the affair define you. Below, experts on the subject of infidelity share their best advice for letting go and starting over after an affair.

1. Stop telling yourself you’ve been wronged.

No, it’s not right that your ex cheated. And if he or she has moved on with the affair partner, it definitely doesn’t seem fair. But if you’re ever going to move on, you need to stop thinking of the affair as an injustice, said Tracy Schorn, the author of Leave a Cheater, Gain a Life: The Chump Lady’s Survival Guide

“Every time you go down the rabbit hole of how unfair it is and compare how happy they are after what they did, ask yourself, ‘OK, so what am I going to do about it? How am I going to move forward anyway?'” she advised. “That’s all you control — you. You don’t control the crappy things other people do. You only control how you’re going to respond. So focus on what you control — your new, cheater-free life.”

2. Accept that the marriage is over.

Once you’ve made the decision to end the marriage or relationship, commit yourself to leaving. That means figuring out the logistics of divorce (Where are you going to stay? Should you retain a lawyer or is mediation your best bet?) and also coming to terms with the finality of your decision, said Caroline Madden, a marriage therapist and the author of Fool Me Once: Should I Take Back My Cheating Husband?

“Stop waiting for your spouse to come through the door,” she said. “Stop arguing about the affair. There is nothing to argue about anymore.

Instead, Madden said to “take an honest inventory of how the marriage wasn’t working for you. If he or she was cheating, your needs probably weren’t being met and you deserve to be with a spouse who doesn’t bail during rough times.”

3. Stop wasting your energy hating the affair partner.

It may feel cathartic to disparage and name-call your ex’s affair partner when you rant to your friends, but at some point, you’ll need to curb your anger, said Madden. Since your ex was the one who made your marriage vows, the lion’s share of the blame should rest on his or her shoulders, she added.

“When you waste your energy thinking about the affair partner, you get sucked into  comparing yourself to him or her and hating yourself,” Madden said. “You may think you are judging her, but you’re actually judging yourself.”

Even if you think you’re fitter, more accomplished and an all-around better person than the other man or woman, drawing comparisons is ultimately a losing proposition, she said.

“In any event, your husband or wife chose the other person over you,” she said. “If you keep thinking about her, you will continue to hurt yourself, more and more.”

4. Don’t let anyone dictate forgiveness.

Forgiveness is the next step to moving on but don’t let anyone rush you, said Schorn.

“Don’t let anyone dictate that timeline or say that you ‘must’ forgive,” she said. “Let go of some superhuman expectation of magnanimity and forgiveness. Just focus on building your new life. You’ll get to the ‘meh’ stage eventually, I promise.”

And if you’re worried that forgiveness is a tall order, it may help to know how Schorn defines the word when it comes to infidelity.

“Forgiveness means your ex doesn’t have the power to hurt you any more,” she said.  ”It takes a long time to get there. In the process, be kind to yourself.”

5. Don’t tell the kids.

You may be completely devastated but if you have kids, that doesn’t give you permission to tell them about mommy or daddy’s new “friend,” said Madden.

“If you tell them, you will involve them in deep adult issues that will threaten their foundation for all relationships,” she said. “It could cause them to worry and wonder if they can ever really trust their future romantic partner.”

She added: “The time to tell the truth will eventually come, but for now, let them have their childhood a little bit longer.”

6. Don’t isolate yourself.

If you can swing it, find a therapist who can help you process the rollercoaster of emotions you’re undoubtedly feeling. If not, reach out to that one friend who always dispenses balanced, nonjudgemental advice, said Samantha Rodman, a psychologist and the author of How to Talk to Your Kids about Your Divorce.

“Don’t go it alone if you don’t have to,” she said. “Even online forums can be helpful to start to realize that you’re not alone.”

7.  Rediscover yourself.

Infidelity can do a number on your self-esteem. When you start to feel really low, remind yourself of how bad ass you were — and still are! — by exploring hobbies and interests you put on the back burner during the marriage, said Rodman.

“Think about what makes you feel confident and most like yourself, whether it’s cooking, taking a dance class or even just spending some time with friends,” she said. “Activities that you left behind in your old relationship can make you feel more ready to move on and enjoy your future.”

8. Don’t let your ex steal your joy.

You know the saying “the best revenge is success”? It’s 100 percent true. Let your elaborate scheme for vengeance fall to the wayside and decide instead to live your life with gusto. Nothing will tick your cheating ex off more, Schorn said.

“People who cheat have a vested interest in rubbing their fabulous, new, sparkly life in your face —  it has to be fabulous to justify the trail of broken hearts and broken homes,” she explained. “Ignore. Block. You’re still you. Cheaters might try and take your children, your pension, and your wedding china — but they can’t have your soul. You captain that.”

Everything We Know About ‘American Horror Story: Hotel’

We now know who the main characters are in “American Horror Story: Hotel,” the real-life incident that inspired the season and when it will debut.

On Friday, the cast and creators of “AHS: Hotel” revealed a slew of new details about the upcoming season during the Television Critics Association summer press tour. We’ve compiled a list of everything we know about Season 5 of the anthology series so you’re fully prepared to check in on Oct. 7.

  • The name of the titular hotel will be Hotel Cortez, set in downtown Los Angeles.
  • The new season will be more like Season 1. Co-creator Brad Falchuk described “Hotel” as more “noir-y” and said the horror will be “dripping out of” the hotel.
  • The new season was inspired by a surveillance video of a girl who went missing after she entered an elevator in a downtown hotel. “She was never seen again,” Ryan Murphy said at the TCA panel. While it’s not confirmed, we have a strong theory that Murphy was referring to the death of Elisa Lam, a woman who was last seen in the lobby of LA’s Cecil Hotel in 2013 and was found dead in one of the hotel’s rooftop water tanks.
  • Lady Gaga plays Elizabeth, the owner of the hotel. Murphy described her as “a very wealthy social doyenne who is consumed with art and fashion and people.” Elizabeth also has a nefarious plan that unravels over the course of the season. Don’t expect any musical moments from Gaga this season, though.
  • Sarah Paulson is Hypodermic Sally, who lives at the hotel and hates Kathy Bates’ Iris. The actress described Sally as “a nasty gal” who is “quite dark.” “She’s sexy, she’s a drug addict,” Paulson said at the panel. “Not that drug addicts are sexy, but she’s sexy.” Sally also has a “budding something” with Wes Bentley’s character.
  • Kathy Bates is Iris, who Bates described as “very, very sexy.” Iris runs the hotel and has a relationship with Matt Bomer and Wes Bentley’s characters.
  • Denis O’Hare plays a character named Elizabeth Taylor, who the actor described as “a person inspired by the awesomeness” of Taylor’s movies, such as “Cleopatra” and “Butterfield 8.” In the show, Liz Taylor works at the hotel bar, the Blue Parrot Lounge, with Iris.
  • Matt Bomer is Donovan who has a “very interesting” relationship with Gaga’s Elizabeth.
  • Wes Bentley plays Detective John Lowell who is investigating gridly murders that lead him to check into the hotel. John is married to Chloë Sevigny‘s Alex who is dealing with a loss in the family.
  • Finn Wittrock plays Tristan Duffy, a male model who is “always looking for the next high and finds the biggest high in Lady Gaga.” Wittrock said Gaga “sees all of [him],” whatever that means.
  • Cheyenne Jackson plays Will Drake, a fashion icon who has moved from New York to Los Angeles.
  • Angela Bassett plays Romana Royale, an actress who Bassett said is “sexy as hell.” Romana has a strong, lasting relationship with Gaga’s character. She doesn’t live in the hotel, but she visits often.
  • Murphy revealed that characters from previous “AHS” seasons will begin checking in to “Hotel” starting with Episode 6.
  • Evan Peters will play Mr. March, and will be “evil” along with Paulson, Bates, Bassett and Bomer’s characters.
  • Lily Rabe will portray a famous serial killer on “Hotel.”
  • Naomi Campbell will guest star as a fashion editor who will face off with Gaga’s Elizabeth.
  • Darren Criss will reportedly appear on “Hotel” for a Halloween episode as Justin, a Silver Lake hipster, according to E! Online. Justin will apparently have some drama with Bates’ Iris after he has too many room service demands.

“American Horror Story: Hotel” will premiere on Oct. 7 on FX.

Having Everything

2015-08-03-1438625606-6474779-IMG_3625.JPG

It’s been five months since my husband moved out, eight months since we knew we were getting a divorce, and some of the reality is only just starting to hit me. No partner is coming home at the end of the day, and no one is waiting for me to come home. No one is going to tag team with me for baths and bed, or watch the baby while I take a nap. I haven’t worn my wedding ring since December, but only recently have I felt the ghost of the diamond band lingering around my finger.

I know without a doubt that this divorce is the right step, the only way forward, but that doesn’t make it easy. My middle daughter breaks into tears at random moments sometimes, filled with sadness that her dad and I are not getting back together. I drop off my kids every other week and don’t see them for five days. It seems unnatural for children and parents to go so long without seeing each other, almost as unnatural as putting them to bed or taking them on vacation by myself.

And then, of course, there’s money. I won’t be able to keep the house my children have grown up in, the house whose walls I painted warm yellow last year. When the final papers are signed, my bank account balance may look a lot like the one I had in my early 20s.

For a long time, I thought I knew how things were supposed to be. I was raised by a single mother, but I was never going to be one myself. I’d gone to college, chosen a flexible career, picked a good man. I was going to make sure my kids had the best upbringing possible. My family was going to be solid and stable, with plenty of date nights and cheerful family dinners. Unlike other couples, whose marriages fell apart, I was going to do everything right to ensure my husband and I stayed together forever.

But I’ve learned in life that there is no “supposed to be.” There are too many things beyond my control, events and twists and turns I’m not capable of knowing.

The loss of a marriage, my couples counselor said, is enormous. And he’s right. But I’ve also been mindful throughout this whole process of how much I’ve gained, how much I’m still gaining. My home is peaceful, free from fighting or tension, even during moments of sadness. I have my confidence, and friendships that continue to grow richer with passing months. I am a beginner again, able to discover new parts of myself. I know now that change is constant, that there are no absolutes, and my own contentment relies on accepting the cycles of life rather than resisting them.

No day is guaranteed to any of us. No marriage is perfect. We all do the best we can, and eventually are forced to make decisions of how best to save ourselves.

This summer, I took my three kids to Los Angeles to visit my father. What I looked forward to most was a chance to run on the rolling hills a block away from his house in a local park called Victory Trailhead. On the day I arrived, I changed clothes, tied my sneakers, and walked toward the trail just as the sun began to shimmer behind an overcast sky. It wasn’t until I ran through the entrance of the trail and neared the top of the first hill that I remembered the last time I’d been there. It was three years ago, when I thought my marriage was steady, when I was on the cusp of a new job I hoped would bring financial stability, when both of my older kids were still in preschool. I had casually walked toward the trail early one morning, amazed by its beauty, but scared to venture too far. I was alone, all was quiet around me, and I was worried about getting lost on the path, or what I might find. I was a panicked and fearful person, unsure of whether I could trust myself. So instead of continuing, I closed my eyes and tried to freeze the image of the hills in my mind before I turned back.

This time, though, I ran quickly up the trail, not knowing my way but confident I’d find it. I fell down once and got back up. I lost my way and journeyed far and after a long time intuited my way back to where I came from.

And at some point, I looked up at the scattered clouds and the trees that seemed like they had always lived, listened to the worn dirt scrape beneath my feet, and felt full of the knowledge that I could not possibly fall. There are too many people in my life holding me up. I have my healthy body, the brilliant blue sky, soft earth, beauty everywhere. I have my spirit, intact and stronger than ever before. I know now — after all of this — who I truly am.

It was in that moment, and many moments since, that I felt like I have everything.

lena dunham

Starting this fall, Lena Dunham will be addressing your most pressing, embarrassing, and confounding issues in her forthcoming newsletter, Lenny. Dunham is partnering up with Girls producer Jenni Konner—Lenny is a mashup of both of their names—for this new editorial project. Dunham recognized a need for a forum for young women while on tour for her book, Not That Kind of Girl. Sensing a desire for more content addressed to 19- to 34-year-olds, Dunham enlisted former Slate and Jezebel editor Jessica Grose to head the project. As of now, the stand-in site for Lenny promises the future newsletter will cover “feminism, style, health, politics, friendship, and everything else.” We’ll have to wait until the fall to find out whether this will be this generation’s more accessible answer to Goop. In the meantime, watch Konner and Dunham’s cute introductory Instagram video for Lenny below.

Everything Is Papier-Mâché On ‘True Detective’ Episode 2

The season premiere of “True Detective” proved divisive last week, but entertainment editors Erin Whitney and Matthew Jacobs are sticking to their promise to discuss the show every Sunday. This week’s episode dove slightly deeper into the mystery of Ben Caspare’s death. The city manager’s grizzly autopsy report prompted Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ani (Rachel McAdams) to question whether a penchant for prostitutes led to his demise. Meanwhile, we got an unsettling look at Paul’s (Taylor Kitsch) family life, more of the series’ noirish driving scenes, Frank (Vince Vaughn) worrying about his riches and a cliffhanger that could (rightfully) take the show in a whole other direction. Let’s discuss.

Spoiler alert for “True Detective” Season 2, Episode 2, “Night Finds You.”

Matthew Jacobs: Hi, Erin! We were pretty cruel toward last week’s premiere, and the comments on our review seem to indicate a good number of people agreed with us. Then again, we were graced with a slew of ad hominem attacks on Twitter and via email, so clearly some of you took the episode as seriously as it took itself. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll be able to please the latter crop, so prep your aggression now, gracious readers.

I will say that Episode 2 was marginally better than the first. But hold on while I nod off as Frank moans about his self-made wealth (“Everything is papier-mâché” is an actual line uttered — twice) and while Ray, Ani and Paul exchange vacant side glares as they examine Ben Caspere’s body. On the other side lies the season’s first intriguing scene: Paul’s mother stroking his back and using what I assume is some sort of creepy euphemism when she tells him twice that he can have his “old room” if he spends the night. What is happening there? Give me more of that — it actually feels like there is a character with layers on the screen and not hollow bodies who shepherd the vague plot from one phase to the next.

taylor kitsch

Erin Whitney: Before I jump into this and thus throw myself into the gladiator pit against “True Detective” defenders, let me at least say that I’m not simply comparing this week’s new episode to Season 1. I will reference the initial season, though, because it’s difficult not to mourn something great in the midst of watching the melodramatic scenes from this week’s episode.

That opening sequence where Frank recalls his childhood with his drunk father is painful to watch, but in the wrong way. What should play as a poignant emotional moment is instead drenched in cheap desperation. Way longer than necessary, the scene feels like it’s ripped straight out of an actor’s guidebook to auditioning: the hardened criminal shows his vulnerability by recounting memories of his abusive daddy locking him in the basement. Pizzolatto has somehow lost all sense of subtlety in his writing to the point that I can’t help but wonder if he’s playing a joke on us.

Jump ahead to the car scenes between Ray and Ani and the group meeting between all three detectives. Each of these plays like a parody of Season 1 and, in general, much of quality television. Their conversations seem superfluous, or at least insignificant to the plot at hand. They don’t reveal any distinct or deeper qualities about the characters. Part of me thinks Pizzolatto has completely flipped his writing style to subvert our expectations of what TV should be, which is what Matt Johnston claimed in his Business Insider review. Even so, that’s not remotely engaging or serving any storytelling or symbolic purpose (at least not yet). I pray my mind will be changed by the end of the season — I desperately want to be in awe of this show. But so far, I’m simply not convinced.

Matt: I can’t say I buy that there is that much self-awareness at play, but I’ve seen others make arguments about its meta relationship to prestige programming, too. The show doesn’t seem to realize what it’s lacking, which is a sense of identity within the world it depicts. Every location featured is a grubby, nondescript part of this fictional LA-adjacent town, and without color from local denizens drifting through the background, it is rendered culture-less. That’s why I griped about the freeway shots last week — they reflect the web of plots the show has weaved, but do little to immerse us in what makes this town tick and why Caspere’s disappearance is worth eight talky hours of television. The same goes for the car scenes, where Ray and Ani carry on meaningless conversations that don’t unearth much about their worldviews or the communities they defend. And that green screen? HBO, please tell me the screeners you provided to press still needed color-correction work, because damn. If we thought the aerial shots do nothing for the season’s world-building, just look at the streets these characters drive down.

I thought the scene with Paul’s mother accomplished what most of the others did not in hinting at a mysterious backstory that we actually want to take the time to understand. I criticized his suicidal bender last week, but could Paul actually be the season’s best character? Not that he has much competition: I still don’t understand much about Ani and it seems like the show thinks we know more about Frank than we actually do, while Ray is so on the nose that I understand far too much about him. But wait! Maybe he’s dead? Those final few moments were pretty gripping, and it could point to interesting things to come. But I find it hard to believe he’s actually a goner.

vince vaughn colin farrell

Erin: I enjoyed the scene between Paul and his mother as well and finally began to feel a sense of discomfort, which is something this season has lacked so far. But I also really loved the final scene with Ray in Caspere’s secret home. The animal masks and vintage radio amped up the (possible) presence of the occult, and things were just starting to get interesting. Like you said, I can’t imagine the season killing off its lead character just yet. Still, it feels a bit cheap to tease audiences with such a big cliffhanger so early on.

The lack of identity you mention is my main criticism of the first two episodes overall. This season has no sense of place, which is surprising for a plot so grounded in a distinct locale. The corruption and grimy immorality of last season hung over every episode, reminding viewers of the horrors of world Rust and Marty were immersed in. It’s fine that Season 2 isn’t trying to recreate that feeling, but it makes the atmosphere that much less intriguing. Why care about a kidnapped official from a city no one cares for in the first place? Even after two episodes, I still don’t feel like we’ve witnessed enough of the idiosyncrasies of the fictional Vinci — I’m longing to see more of it, but the low-quality crushing car scenes and brief shots of factories do little to characterize it. Whatever happens moving forward, I hope that final scene pays off in a major way.

Matt: It gave me the sense that Ray knew more than the audience did. There was a certain comfort on his face as he lurked through Caspere’s home, implying his power-abusing corruption might extend to the expired city manager. That would give his need to retain custody over his possibly illegitimate son — the part of his life that he sees as a saving grace — a sense of purpose that stretches beyond clichéd daddy issues. Conversely, maybe he’s working to crush Frank’s entire operation after spending so much time indebted to him. That’s a script-flipping I’d sign on for. Either would ground the mystery by contouring the good-or-evil debate the show hasn’t convinced us to invest in regarding these characters. Maybe this is Season 2’s turning point. Here’s to hoping for a more immersive discussion next week.

Erin: The possibility of Ray withholding information and/or conning Frank all along is the most exciting theory yet, and one that could quickly turn me into a fan of this season. I’ve wondered whether scrutinizing this show episode by episode may hurt our perception of it. Last season I fell so deeply down the rabbit hole of uncovering the Yellow King’s identity that I nearly lost sight of the overall story at hand. While I’m still skeptical, I am going to try to pull back a bit and let the next few episodes wash over me, and hopefully they will surprise us both.

“True Detective” airs on Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO.
