Cardi B Becomes 1st Female Rapper To Top Billboard Hot 100 Chart Twice

Birthday Bash 2018

Source: Paras Griffin / Getty

Cardi B is the queen of the Billboard Hot 100 charts after becoming the first female rapper to top the list twice. With “Bodak Yellow” and her current hit “I Like It,” Bardi’s staying power on the charts cannot be overlooked any longer.

Billboard reports:

Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin’s “I Like It” lifts from No. 2 to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, granting Cardi B an unprecedented feat in the chart’s history, as she becomes the first female rapper with two No. 1s. She first reigned with her debut hit, “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves),” for three weeks beginning Oct. 7, 2017.

Meanwhile, Latin music stars Bad Bunny and Balvin earn their first Hot 100 No. 1 each.

Cardi B’s Record Second Hot 100 No. 1: “Like” is the 1,076th No. 1 in the Hot 100’s archives, which dates to the chart’s Aug. 4, 1958, inception.

Thanks to “Bodak Yellow” and now “Like,” Cardi B passes four female rappers who previously topped the tally with one No. 1 apiece: Lauryn Hill, with “Doo Wop (That Thing),” for two weeks in 1998; Lil’ Kim, with “Lady Marmalade,” with Christina Aguilera, Mya and P!nk (five weeks, 2001); Shawnna, as featured on Ludacris’ “Stand Up” (one, 2003); and, Iggy Azalea, with “Fancy,” featuring Charli XCX (seven, 2014).

Salute to Cardi B.

Birdman Proclaims Nicki Minaj “The Best Female Ever In Hip-Hop”, Ignites Twitter War

Array

Source: WENN / WENN

Birdman stirred up the pot with his recent bold but expected statements in regard to his artist Nicki Minaj. In an interview with Rap-Up, he proclaimed the head barb in charge is the “greatest female ever in hip-hop”. As you can imagine the barbz rejoiced and fans of the likes of other iconic female rappers like Missy and Lil’Kim felt otherwise.

Well, she is his artist and she has made him a ton of money so this should come as no surprise he feels this way.Just days before on The Wendy Show, Birdman praised Nicki on there as well so he’s just doubling down on his statement at this point.

Birdman doesn’t hold back while gushing over the Queens rapper and putting her basically in a class all by herself and dropping evidence to back up his statement and raving about talent.

“I always say she’s the best ever, best female ever in hip-hop, hands down, facts. There’s no getting around it,” Birdman stated. There’s levels to this s**t. Very much levels to this s**t. She’s an elite.”

“Sometimes, you can put Nicki in a room with males on a rap, but if you put her on females, it’s nothing,” he explained. “She’s a monster in her own race.”

“She’s just a special talent. I’m blessed to have her a part of my team. She’s a special talent I’ve never heard before.”

Some glowing words that should have Minaj where ever she is right now smiling from ear to ear. Minaj is currently on a social media hiatus but has been spotted recently in the studio. Birdman even gave us an update on what she is currently up stating that she is “focused” on new music. That seems to be the case after a photo of herself and DJ Clue popped up of them together in her studio.

Instagram Photo

As one would imagine the very opinionated platform that is Twitter had to chime in on Birdman’s bold statement. It’s a good mix of barbz co-signing the Cash Money head honcho and those tweeting bloody murder.

At the end of the day, it’s all a matter of opinion and Birdman is definitely entitled to his and Nicki’s accomplishments are hard to argue against but there is definitely other great women hip-hop as well. To see more fallout from Birdman’s proclamation hit the flip.

Trend Union’s Li Edelkoort: Goddesses Are Emerging Female Archetypes in Fashion

DRAPED CRUSADERS: As the social message of women’s empowerment continues to gain ground, goddess-like strength and traits are turning up in fashion.
Goddesses of all different heritages and persuasions were the focus of Li Edelkoort’s spring 2019 presentation for Trend Union at The New School in New York. The way she sees it, they are at the root of the emerging female fashion archetype for the industry with individuals determining their own goddess based on individual tastes. Predicting a revolution sparked partially from draping, folding and cuts, Edelkort expects normcore and streetwear basics to dissolve. That shift calls for “designers, not influencers,” she said.
With a myriad of colorful images that drew from art history, fashion, portraiture and nature, the trend forecaster offered a crash course in goddesses. Students and industry types learned of Aphrodite, Demeter, Hestia, Gaia, Flora & Fauna, Nike and others. Edelkoort also pointed to the increasing importance of the sack dress, regal colors and majestic fabrics. She also spoke of “this child woman” who is very dominant in society, accumulating jobs as if she is accumulating pairs of shoes. “She lives her life like a ribbon, like a bracelet — there is not a clear direction. In Iowa, Hillary Shows She’s Learned Something About Running While Female

This post originally appeared on The Cut.
By Rebecca Traister

For all those Democrats who fretted for the past year about the probability of a listless primary, and for any who (inanely) predicted a “coronation” for Hillary Clinton (I mean, just as a point of fact, in the U.S. we don’t hand out president crowns, and especially not to women), Monday night put every fear to rest. Democrats could not have asked for a more riveting nail-biter. As of this writing, it’s still not clear whether Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton “won,” and I gather, after eleventy hours of listening to polling analysis, that it may not be clear for another eleventy hours.

That’s pretty thrilling. Democrats have two candidates about whom voters feel passionate. The win/tie is tremendous for Sanders, the long-shot challenger from the left. But it’s also pretty great for Clinton, who could have decisively lost Iowa but hung on, and who also became the first Clinton (and the first woman ever) not to have outright lost the state.

Clinton’s approach tonight — her ballsy power-play move of stepping over Republican winner Ted Cruz’s victory speech, and her happy-warrior tone — showed a marked contrast from her 2008 loss in Iowa, a night when she came in nine points behind Barack Obama and one point behind John Edwards. Back then, her concession was dismal, wan, practically consumptive. Eight years later, she was energetic, brassy, and seemed to show she’s learning something about navigating the choppy waters of running for president while female.

The key thing she did in her “sigh of relief” speech on Monday was right her flailing message about health-care reform, which in recent days had gone off the rails for her in a very familiar way.

She was firm and positive in her framing of her goal: “I know that we can finish the job of universal health-care coverage for every man, woman, and child!” she shouted affirmatively and warmly, in sharp contrast to the sharper tone she’d deployed in recent days, culminating in a YouTube clip that was swiftly dubbed by her critics “Hillary’s Mean Scream.” In it, Clinton had bellowed about how “people who have health emergencies can’t wait for us to have some theoretical debate about some better idea that will never, ever come to pass!”

Clinton, who has in one way or another spent decades of her career pushing for universal health-care reform, was expressing her obvious lack of patience for a candidate whose idea of starting from scratch, rather than building on the reforms of the flawed but hard-won Affordable Care Act, strikes her as pie-in-the-sky.

But in failing to present an upbeat take on her disagreement with Sanders, Clinton had sounded like a scold, the disciplinarian, the mean mommy, the pragmatic downer — all versions of a feminized role that she and many, many women have long found it incredibly difficult to escape.

Recall the days following the 2008 Iowa caucus, when the media took advantage of Clinton’s defeat to let loose with their resentment and animosity toward her. That was when conservative Marc Rudov told Fox News that Clinton lost because “When Barack Obama speaks, men hear ‘Take off for the future!’ When Hillary Clinton speaks, men hear ‘Take out the garbage!'” It was in the days after Iowa that Clinton infamously got asked about how voters believed her to be “the most experienced and the most electable” candidate but “are hesitating on the likability issue.” In late January, columnist Mike Barnicle told a laughing all-male panel on Morning Joe that Clinton’s challenge was that she looks “like everyone’s first wife standing outside of probate court.”

What was true in ’08 remains true this year. From her entrance into the campaign, Clinton has been tagged as unlikable, as the practical buzzkill, the boring one with the wonky facts and figures and experience who’s going to show up and tell you that your big plans are impossible, but that she’s thought of some smaller and more doable fixes. Meanwhile, Sanders, who entered the race shouting righteously and correctly about a system that’s broken, has, as his campaign has strengthened, become the unlikely vehicle of idealistic hopes and dreams for America — Free college! Free health care! A $ 15 minimum wage! The breakup of the big banks!

His vision of revolution, as Bryce Covert wrote in Monday’s New York Times, differs significantly from Clinton’s approach, which Covert described accurately as “pragmatism incarnate.” Critics argue that his promises have no chance of coming to fruition, but their soaring scale — and the righteous ideals to which they speak — make him a candidate it is infinitely easier to feel emotionally inspired by. Clinton’s realism may in fact be one of the reasons that her supporters believe that she’d make a more prepared and effective commander-in-chief than Sanders — something that in fact provokes rational excitement, especially by those thrilled at the idea of an experienced, capable, hard-assed Democratic woman president. But hers is not an easy pose to pull off, if you’re trying to win the hearts of America. In fact, MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell reported tonight that many young voters in Iowa had told her that their decision between Clinton and Sanders had come down to head versus heart, respectively.

That hurts, and it falls into a very old, very well-worn gendered pattern, in which women — understanding that making promises they cannot back up will not get them taken seriously and that they must prove themselves extra-competent in order to be understood as basically competent — become the nose-to-the-grindstone wonks, easily compared to know-it-all bores like Tracy Flick and Hermione Granger. They’re the wet blankets, the ones all too acquainted with the limitations imposed by the world, and all too eager to explain their various ideas for working around them. Men, and especially white men, whose claims to public or political power are more easily understood, are permitted a slightly looser approach.

There’s been some talk about how a female candidate could never be as scruffy as Bernie Sanders, as uncombed and unkempt. A woman could never be as grumpy as Bernie, as left-leaning as Bernie, as uncooperative with party machinery as Bernie. And that stuff is true enough. But the bigger truth is that what Bernie does, to great acclaim, that Hillary Clinton could never do is make big promises of institutional overthrow, tug on our imaginative heartstrings by laying out a future that might not be grounded in reality, and urge a revolution.

Here is a truth about America: No one likes a woman who yells loudly about revolution.

And no, it’s not just this woman. This is a paradigm; it’s why Mom is the disciplinarian and Dad is the fun guy, why women remain the brains and organizational workhorses behind social movements while men get to be the gut-ripping orators, why so many women still manage campaigns and so many men are still candidates.

So here we are! On our way to New Hampshire, a state that inspiring Bernie Sanders is overwhelmingly favored to win. But for one of the first times, in her speech in Iowa, I saw Clinton work effectively to turn the pragmatic ship around, to take what she wants to say — that Sanders’s soaring promises are empty but her more modest proposals might come to pass — and make it sound almost exciting.

Black Cop Beats Black Female Suspect On Bus, Riders Beg For Peace [VIDEO]

Although details are scant at the time, a harrowing video depicting a Black Boston police officer beating a female suspect over alleged theft on a bus and then pulling his service weapon has surfaced. Riders on the vehicle pleaded with the officer to put down his gun and did the same when a fellow officer came to intervene with his weapon drawn.

Raw Story reported on the video, which was uploaded by BoomNation Station. While the video was uploaded on Friday (Sept. 18), there is not an official time stamp on the video nor has any local Boston outlet picked up the story to our knowledge.

What we can see is that the unnamed officer is brutally beating the woman and fighting with her, then he draws his gun after she doesn’t comply. From there, the riders began shouting at the officer while others began recording the incident.

More from Raw Story:

In a video posted on YouTube Friday night, the officer can be seen struggling with the woman near the end of the bus –reportedly over a petty theft charge — and quickly drawing his gun as bystanders scrambled to get out of the way.

With multiple witnesses filming the altercation on their cell phones, bystanders can be heard yelling “drop the gun,” “officer, please put down the gun” as the cop can be seen looking back at them and seeing he is being recorded.

After holstering his weapon, the officer continues to attempt to control the woman who flails at him while climbing up on bus seats in an attempt to get away.

Witnesses can heard pleading with her “sister, chill out” and “relax,” saying “we’re here for you.”

This story is developing. We will update when new information is made available. We also wish to stress that we do not know the exact date and time of the video, or if it was footage from this year.

Watch the video of the Boston police officer and the tussle with a female suspect below. A Warning: the video is violent and may be triggering for some.

Alex Wang Introduces Fashion Week to Britain’s Hottest Female Rapper

lady leshurr

We said it before and we will say it again: Alexander Wang, who celebrated his 10th anniversary this evening with a bold, in-your-face Spring 2016 show that spoke directly to his cool kid sensibilities, is a musical harbinger for the fashion world.

Soon after the lights went up on the runway, out from the speakers rumbled the voracious lyrics of underground hip-hop star Lady Leshurr. Née Melesha O’Garro, the 26-year-old British rapper possesses a streetwise personal style to match the collection, and her hit single “Queen’s Speech 3” was a fitting soundtrack to the clothes.

While not an American household name just yet, Leshurr has been a favorite around the Vogue offices for weeks now, and we reckon, is destined for music and fashion stardom too.

Do Women Really Need the Newly Approved “Female Viagra”?

irving penn for vogue

It might surprise you, but for some women, the Ginuwine Pandora station and a quick vape are not enough to get in the mood. Surveys have estimated that about 10 percent of women have something called hypoactive sexual desire disorder. It was with this condition in mind that the Food and Drug Administration yesterday approved Addyi, the first prescription drug to enhance sex drive in women green-lighted by the agency. (Street names: “female Viagra,” “pink Viagra,” “girl boner in a bottle.”)

Created by Sprout Pharmaceuticals, Addyi, known generically as flibanserin, was engineered to treat women whose lack of libido is causing them distress. Sexual pleasure is a critical part of emotional health, the premise seems to be, and if you’re not able to give and receive it, your psychological and physical well-being may be at risk. And given that men have a whole host of available drugs to better their sex lives, it seems about time women got their own magic pill, right?

Interestingly, Addyi is actually the first approved drug to increase libido at all. The drugs aimed at men, Viagra and the like, are intended to help men achieve an erection, not to increase horniness. Also unlike Viagra, Addyi is not a pill one takes an hour before sex to get going, but rather must be taken daily, long term, in order to see results.

The big question is, of course, whether a lack of sexual libido in women is an actual medical condition that needs to be treated. Surely a low sex drive is just as normal and ultimately natural as a high one. (Of course the first sex drug for women is aimed to increase libido. I’m sure many men would like to “fix” this “problem” in their partners.) At the same time, sex is an important component of a healthy relationship, and if you’re not apt to do that, your relationship could suffer tremendously; for these people, the pill may offer hope.

The other big question is whether the drug actually works. Many people are saying it doesn’t, or, at least, that it doesn’t work well enough. Several pharmaceutical giants have reportedly attempted to make and sell such a drug, including Pfizer (which produces Viagra), Bayer, and Procter & Gamble, but they ultimately abandoned their efforts. The FDA previously rejected Addyi itself twice, in 2010 and again in 2013, citing marginal effectiveness and considerable side effects, including nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, and fainting, which can lead to serious injuries.

Following the rejections, campaigns like Even the Score have argued that it’s sexist to have so many drugs for men on the market but none for women. Now that the drug has been approved, critics are saying that the FDA was pressured into green-lighting the drug by a feminist lobby, and that the drug’s negative effects outweigh the potential benefits. Particularly strong opposition is coming from Leonore Tiefer, clinical associate professor of psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine, who told Time: “I am very opposed to the drug and have been since it first went to the FDA in 2010 and it was rejected. Then it was rejected a second time. The drug hasn’t changed, the data hasn’t changed, and my opinion hasn’t changed. I think it’s a disaster. It’s unsafe and it doesn’t work. That is all a drug is supposed to do. Work and be safe.”

In any case, the drug will come with a label warning doctors and patients that combining the pill with alcohol can cause dangerously low blood pressure, and thus fainting. Because the pill must be taken daily, women on the medication would have to be cool with being basically sober. (To whom I would ask: Maybe the reason that you’re never horny is because you’re never drunk?)

The drug will be available starting in October. Which means that, very soon, many women may be making a tough decision: Would you rather be able to drink or be sober and nauseous in exchange for a minimally heightened sex drive?

Having more options for ways to increase desire is a positive thing. But you might try a vibrator before jumping to the meds.

Female Viagra or Not, You’ll Want to Get Between These Sheets

irving penn sheets libido

Now that Addyi, the so-called female version of Viagra, has the stamp of approval from the FDA, everyone’s got an opinion—advocates say it’s a leap forward for women’s rights and sexual dysfunction, critics think it’s not effective enough and makes a joke out of pharmaceutical lobbying. If your stance happens to be somewhere in the middle of the issue, here’s another way of looking at things: It might be a great time to update your sheets, either to sleep in or get busy between. Whether you pop the “little pink pill” or not in the coming season, here are four amazing start-up, online-only bedding labels to peruse.

Boll & Branch
Founded by a husband and wife team last year, Boll & Branch sells sheets made of cotton sourced directly from local farmers around the world. Their sustainable linens come in simple whites, ivories, blues, and grays, with banded, pleated, and vintage-inspired trim.

Parachute
Manufactured in Tuscany, Parachute is focused on careful design—from its oversize cashmere throws that cover an entire bed, to its envelope closures on pillowcases. The company also partners with the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets antimalaria campaign. The designs are minimal and modern, with materials that range from sateen to linen.

Crane & Canopy
This bedding site works directly with manufacturers who are also in business with top luxury department stores, offering similar products at much lower costs. Crane & Canopy offers the widest range of styles and colors of the start-up bunch.

Brooklinen
Brooklinen’s offerings are made with neutral color palettes, like navy, gray, and white, and its sheet patterns only go as far as a thin pinstripe or window pane. The allure of this brand is certainly its technique and use of long-staple Egyptian cotton, which produces sheets and comforters that are softer than most.

Under Armour’s New Campaign Is All About The Power Of Female Athleticism

In the company’s latest campaign, Under Armour is all about highlighting the accomplishments of incredible athletes.

The fitness brand is promoting its Armour High Bra, which is built for high impact activities — running, kickboxing etc — with gorgeous posters of ballerina Misty Copeland, Apline ski racer Lindsey Vonn, soccer player Kelley O’Hara and surfer Brianna Cope, among others.

“Woven into the Armour Bra product launch is a deeper goal of connecting with women at all levels of sport and all stages of their lives, and changing the way they think and talk about sports bras,” Adrienne Lofton, the SVP of of brand marketing for Under Armour said in a press release.

This summer has been an important one for athletes who are women. Earlier this month, New York’s parade to celebrate the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team’s World Cup win was the first ticker tape parade for female professional athletes in 30 years. And Serena Williams’ win at Wimbledon elicited awe from the likes of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling (including this epic shutdown of a Williams critic).

But just in case you still needed a reminder about the power of women’s athleticism, take a look at some of the photos from the campaign below:

Are We Finally Ready To Publicly Celebrate Female Desire?

“Now I want someone to throw me around like that,” my friend quipped right after we saw “Magic Mike XXL” last week.

I went to see the much-discussed buddy-comedy-feminist-stripper-film with a lady squad of three in tow, and after two hours of muttering “holy sh*t” and giggling in our seats, we left the theater feeling giddy. The movie had, for lack of a better term, spoken to us — specifically to our sexuality.

As Cosmopolitan’s Patti Greco wrote: “It understands that the key to women’s sexuality is foreplay. ‘Magic Mike XXL’ is foreplay.”

It’s rare to see a film that so unabashedly celebrates the desires of its target audience (in this case straight women of all races, body types and ages), unless that audience is a room of white, also straight, men. Watching “Magic Mike XXL” in a theater was akin to being in the audience of the film’s Myrtle Beach Stripper Convention, or being one of the “queens” at Jada Pinkett-Smith’s character’s members-only club in Savannah. The overarching messaging was: You deserve to be catered to. These men are here for you. They know what you want and can deliver it. Now sit back and enjoy the ride.

We have reached a cultural moment where female sexuality — at least straight female sexuality — is being acknowledged in bigger and bolder ways.

Female celebrities are talking about sex and sexuality frankly, and in greater numbers. Nicki Minaj and Beyonce sing about “Feeling Myself,” and TV shows like “UnREAL”  display female masturbation unapologetically and without shock value.

These are messages we desperately need to hear from our sheroes, listen to in our music and see on our TV and movie screens.

In the last two months, both Nicki Minaj and Amy Schumer have flat-out said — during interviews with major women’s magazines no less — that Women. Deserve. Orgasms.

“I demand that I climax. I think women should demand that,” Minaj told Cosmpolitan for the magazine’s July 2015 cover story. Schumer echoed those sentiments in an August 2015 cover story interview with Glamour: “Don’t not have an orgasm. Make sure he knows that you’re entitled to an orgasm,” she said.

The statistics vary depending on the source. A Cosmopolitan survey found that just 57 percent of women reported orgasming “most or every time” they have sex with a partner, while a larger study from 2000 showed that women reported having one orgasm for every three orgasms men reported having. No matter which way you slice it, there seems to be a gender imbalance when it comes to the big “O.”

As The Guardian’s Jessica Valenti wrote, “until we recognize that women’s pleasure during sex is just as important as men’s — and that there’s nothing wrong with having sex just because it feels good — that nuance will be difficult to… achieve.”

When we see pockets of mainstream culture placing female pleasure front and center, we get one step closer to reaching the sexual equality that Valenti is referencing.

I informally polled some female friends who had seen “Magic Mike XXL” to make sure my enthusiastic reaction wasn’t just the result of overexposure to Channing Tatum’s abs. They all agreed that this mainstream movie had somehow tapped into something radical.

“I have never seen a mainstream blockbuster hit that made me feel so understood as a woman,” said Elizabeth Plank, Senior Editor at Mic. “Male characters that are both masculine AND deferential to women is very rare and ‘Magic Mike’ was able to strike that balance flawlessly.”

“The movie was a giant celebration of women receiving and enjoying sensory pleasures, which, more often than not, we’re told to deny or control in real life,” Isabel Foxen Duke, creator of Stop Fighting Food, told me.

It’s those sensory pleasures — and the idea that everyone watching should feel encouraged to indulge them — that make “Magic Mike” part deux such an utter delight.

Women want to be wanted. We want to imagine ourselves in the starring role of a sexual fantasy that was crafted for us. We want to have our bodies ravished, and maybe, just maybe, our minds too. We want better than Edward Cullen or Christian Grey. We want to be “exhalted,” as Pinkett-Smith’s Rome says. We demand all of those things. We are entitled to all of those things.

No one’s saying we should send a DVD of “Magic Mike XXL” to every straight man in the world, and berate him if he can’t gyrate like Channing Tatum or give his female partner an orgasm in 30 seconds, but rather to expand our own internalized ideas about female desire; to understand that we deserve to explore those desires and see them imagined outside of our heads.

Are we finally ready to expand our cultural idea of what female desire and sexuality looks like? We certainly haven’t reached some equality-embracing, lady-worshipping sexual nirvana — after all, we’re still waiting on the mainstream blockbusters that cater to the multifaceted desires of queer women — but the future looks a little more hopeful.

“Queens, are you ready to be worshipped?,” asks Rome in “Magic Mike XXL.” Oh, we are, answer the women who dropped $ 20 to spend two hours staring at a screen. Now let us be.

Female Miami Cop Under Investigation For Doing Porn On The Force [Photos]

A female Miami cop is currently the target of an embarrassing investigation that highlights her tenure as a bootleg adult film star before and allegedly during her eight-year career with the badge.

To really put the icing on this smut cake, the guy who banged her out on camera is now a convicted rapist.

Reports Local10.com

Local 10 News obtained copies of some of the films featuring Officer Sabine Raymonvil, 30, an eight-year veteran of the Miami Police Department.

Among those she performs sex acts with in the clips is Emerson Callum, a pornographer who is now serving a life sentence in federal prison after being convicted of drugging and raping women who auditioned for his company in 2012.

Also convicted in that case was Callum’s partner and cameraman, Lavont Flanders, a former Miami Beach police officer. Callum had been charged with similar crimes in 2007, but he was not prosecuted.

Raymonvil refused to answer questions while on camera, but later telephoned the station and said that her work in porn films was done prior to her becoming a police officer.

“Right now there is a lot going on with this whole situation,” Raymonvil said. “It’s currently under investigation by two police agencies. So I can’t say very much. I’m willing to speak with you after the investigations are closed. I never made porn while I was a police officer.”

A source close to the investigation alleged that Raymonvil appeared in the porn films well into her tenure as a cop.

sabine-raymonvil-0

Her hiring reflects poorly on the Miami Police Department’s screening process that would prevent them from enduring such a “scandal.” Barring the instance that she did star in these freak flicks while on the force, Raymonvil should be able to legally keep her job.

But who are we kidding? This struggle will never go away until her resignation. Such is life.

Female Entrepreneur : Karen Quinones

2015-07-11-1436622237-5075857-KQ.jpg

I first met Karen Quinones when she walked into a luxury fashion showroom in Paris. We were working on a selection of women’s wear for her boutique and I kind of fell in love. She is the kind of person that lights up a room and has the natural ability to command attention in an elegantly, understated way. Her energy bounces between tough director and sweet curiosity. She knows what she likes and is not afraid to stand behind her intuition yet open to learning about new ideas. This appears to be her formula for success. Karen has been scouting cutting edge brands for her boutique in Miami, appropriately named “En Avance,” for over 20 years. She started out on Lincoln Road in Miami with a multi brand store but had the foresight to move to the Design District before any other luxury brand had even heard of it. After working with Karen on several buys; I had the chance to collaborate with her on a “Pop Up Shop” during Miami’s Art Basel. The experience was like tagging along with the Mayor of Miami’s Design District. She knows everything that is going on as far as business development of the district, has the admiration of local business owners and the devoted trust of her clients. The thing Karen would hate to admit is she is also strikingly beautiful and the woman who will roll up her sleeves and jump into any task, big or small, with equal dedication. I wanted to know more about Karen and hit her up with a few questions….

EP – I have never fully asked you about your background and driving force. How did you get to where you are and is it what you envisioned?

KQ – As a child I grew up surrounded by fashion. My grandmother made couture bridal gowns and my father worked at a men’s store that specialized in custom suiting. Fashion is in my DNA.

My grandmother taught me how to sew and at a very early age I was making my own clothes… mainly pants. As a child I wasn’t allowed to wear pants so in high school, I would change into my pants at the bus stop. Sorry Dad..
.
At the age of 15 I started working in retail and never looked back.

EP – Opening a boutique is a brave venture and relocating a boutique an even more courageous act. What were the signs that helped you make that decision?

KQ – Well my decision to move from Lincoln Road was due to the fact that my building was sold and the new landlord quadrupled my rent. It was a difficult time for me as I am a creature of habit and to move my business to the Design District which at that time was mainly abandoned buildings, home interior and design firms, took a big leap of faith. I basically had to start over. Necessity is the mother of all
(re) invention

2015-07-11-1436622281-6467584-Store1.PNG

EP – How did it feel when the major fashion houses started dropping stores around you? Was it more threat of competition or justification that you have vision?

KQ – After being alone in the Design District for so long, it was great to see the majors coming in. After all, this was the plan outlined for me back in 2006, it just took a lot longer than expected because of the crash in 2008. And of course it’s always great to have Hermes and Dior as your neighbors.

On the flip side, with major names come major increases which lead me to my move one block West nearly 2 years ago.

EP – You have built your business on being a few steps ahead; what brands have you pioneered and what brands are on your horizon?

KQ – I see several innovative Designers coming out of Eastern Europe. I recently saw Paskal while working in Paris and I was impressed by her laser-cut technique. She seems to be the most promising Ukrainian Designer.

2015-07-11-1436622341-4038188-Store2.PNG

EP – Do you identify as a female entrepreneur? What have been some of the obstacles and advantages of your gender?

KQ – I don’t feel I have had any advantages being a Latin female in this business in fact the opposite, it’s challenging to get respect in this business. I’ve been in business for nearly 25 years now and I still face obstacles. In my dealings with landlords, it has been especially difficult as my last two landlords were men.

EP – You are always on the go; can you share a snapshot of your travel schedule?

KQ – My travel schedule for Pre-Spring market was hectic.
I started the month of June in NYC, then back to Miami, off to Milan, back to Miami, off to Paris to wrap up market and back to Miami July 1st.

EP – Retailers are having a tough time dealing with client retention due to the expanded options offered by the internet and overall flooding of the market with goods. How do you plan to keep your business viable?

KQ – With internet shopping at your fingertips, it’s very difficult at times. There needs to be regulations for online stores, especially from Europe who ship tax free but that’s another issue…

In order to stay relevant, I too have an online store but I make sure I have different designers…the smaller brands that are hard to find online. Also, I think the client still wants that personal service and the in-store experience. I still need to touch the fabric, see the details and those things aren’t possible online.

EP – What advice do you have for any person who has ever dreamed of having a shop?

KQ – If it’s your dream, understand that it’s hard work. You have to love what you do and do what you love. Never follow trends, your instinct is key along with dedication and commitment.

EP – You are obviously following your passion and that dedication has lead to your success. What have you learned by doing what you love?

KQ – I have learned that less is more. Attention to detail is most important. Also trust your instincts.

EP – Without giving too much away; what is next?

KQ – I would love to have a small store in either NY or Paris…who knows, maybe one day.

News in Brief: Female Friend Group Fails In One Duty Of Providing Good Gynecologist Recommendation

CHICAGO—Completely embarrassing themselves in a pitiful display of collective ineptitude, a group of five female friends who gathered for happy hour Monday reportedly failed in their sole duty of providing a recommendation for a good gynecologist when asked for one by a new acquaintance who had recently moved to the area. “Yeah, I can’t really think of anyone,” said local woman Mary Goertz, echoing the sentiment of the four other total fuckups who, instead of completing the simple task of producing the name and location of a dependable women’s health specialist in their city, completely shit the bed and floundered around like useless imbeciles. “I think my coworker has a decent one. Will Female and Gay Narratives Ever Be ‘Normal’ in Mainstream Film?

2015-05-15-1431734168-1462726-CateB.Cannes.jpg

With Cannes in full swing, the topic that seems to keep popping up everywhere this year is female representation in the film industry. Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, which just premiered at the festival, has begun to drive the conversation towards female-centric storylines. Gender equality in film, both how it is portrayed on screen and how it’s practiced behind the lens, has been a hot topic for many years now. But with more mid-range and big budget films presenting female driven plots and women as main characters, the issue is now at the forefront of cinema discussion more than ever.

In a recent Variety interview, Cate Blanchett discusses her role in Carol and the importance of this type of narrative in the film world. Carol centers on two women who begin an intense love affair with each other in 1950’s New York. Right off the bat you have an uncommon Hollywood combination: two female main characters (in a non “chick flick” movie) who are also homosexual.

Blanchett comments in the interview that films such as these, with strong-willed female protagonists and a gay romance storyline, are hard to finance because many people are under the impression that movie-goers don’t want to see this type of film. But that simply isn’t true anymore. There have been a number of actresses who’ve played extremely strong, tough characters in recent years — Meryl Streep and Reese Witherspoon to name a few — which have been very well received and widely accepted by audiences. But the gay love story still presents a set of new challenges entirely.

It’s unclear whether its actually the gay romance storyline that audiences aren’t receiving well, or the lack of funding and promotional efforts that go towards films of this type, because of the fear that audiences won’t receive it well. Brokeback Mountain was a breakthrough in the gay love story, but that was over a decade ago now, and the genre has yet to become fully integrated in the mainstream. Blue is the Warmest Color received quite a bit of critical acclaim, and did find some mainstream success, but unfortunately this was mostly due to the fact that it contains a number of provocative lesbian sex scenes.

Luckily it seems that more people are realizing how important the opinions of women and the LGBT community are to the art of filmmaking, and that they will continue to be an integral part of the film industry’s evolution. This year at Cannes, The Hollywood Reporter is partnering with Kering, a parent company to designer brands like Gucci and Balenciaga, who has been at the center of women’s rights issues since its inception in 2009, to present a panel called “Women in Motion.” The panel will feature actresses such as Salma Hayek, Isabella Rossellini, and Frances McDormand, who will discuss female representation in the media today, as well as the role of women working in film, both onscreen and behind the camera.

It’s quite thrilling to see so many influential media personalities discussing these issues and attempting to bring the female narrative to mainstream film. We need to tell the stories of women and of the LGBT community if we ever hope to live in a society where we understand and respect one another. I’m a firm believer that film, television, and music play a powerful role in the ideas we have of what is normal, acceptable, interesting, and important. These ideas must broaden to include the stories of gays, lesbians, and women. Their stories must be seen as normal, acceptable, interesting, and certainly important, if our ideas for the future include living in a peaceful society.

Female African musicians unite in ‘Poverty is Sexist’ campaign

By Kieran Guilbert LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Leading African female musicians have recorded a video of songs and instrumental music, joining a “Poverty is Sexist” campaign to put women and girls at the center of the global drive to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030. Investing in women and closing the gender gap could reduce hunger, cut maternal and child deaths and boost economies in the world’s poorest countries, according to the ONE Campaign, co-founded by Irish rocker Bono to end extreme poverty and disease. The video, released on Wednesday, features seven musicians from seven African countries, including Kenya’s Victoria Kimani, South Africa’s Judith Sephuma and Mozambique’s Gambela, alongside Nigerian actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde. “But when we invest in women and girls, we increase and accelerate the chances of overcoming extreme poverty.” The ONE campaign has also invited people including teenage activist Malala Yousafzai, to take a “#Strengthie”, a selfie in the pose of Rosie the Riveter, face of the famous “We can do it” poster, and post it online in support of girls and women.

Frank151 Curates All Female Book on Modern Feminism

2015-05-01-1430500068-2028748-ScreenShot20150501at1.06.56PM.png

FRANK151 has finally launched a book dedicated to their favorite female personalities who embody modern feminism. In bookstores on May 29, FRANK151’s Chapter 59 will feature girl crushes like Joy Bryant, young entreprenuers like Erin Jeen, comics about curvaceous female leaders, witty astrology blurps, and a lot of fashion’s most notorious badasses and sweethearts like Leah McSweeney, Kristin Noel Crawley and the Glossier team.

After months of releasing mostly male-centric editions, FRANK 151 Chapter 59 book is dedicated entirely to female sexuality, power through being a boss and artistically defining what it means to be female through photography, drawings, music, film and design. It’s a guide for those looking for some unorthodox role models who could teach a thing or two about life. In a space where the internet can be a plethora of janky opportunities, as proof from Erin Jeen‘s interview on how she’s successfully capitalizing on Tumblr and her no nonsense policy, the chapters portray women who are carving out a different path that doesn’t always necessarily equate to a prim and proper Lily Pulitzer character. Readers will be excited about Hillary Clinton and Gloria Steinem as cartoons apart of the Jeliboo, and the dozens of visuals and style inspiration.

Check out a sneak preview of the book and pictures from the book launch party at the MILK Studio’s Jamroom.

Female Stars Explain Why Men In Showbiz ‘Should Have It All’ In Tongue-In-Cheek PSA

“We won’t relent till it’s 100 percent. It’s only fair that men should have it all.”

That’s the catchy refrain sung in this tongue-in-cheek PSA created by The Make It Fair Project in which women in entertainment, including actress Rita Wilson and singer Orfeh, demand more male representation in all aspects of life.

“In the past few years, only 93 percent of popular films were directed by men, and only 80 percent were written by them,” the women say in the video, quoting statistics compiled by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. “Sadly, only 70 percent of speaking roles in film are given to men. And in 2014, only 88 percent of box office hits featured a man in the leading role.”

Men also make up only 80 percent of Congress, the video notes, and only 95 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs.

The Make It Fair Project is the brainchild of actress Patricia Noonan and comedians Emily Tarver and Nadia Quinn. It’s a “call for gender equality in the stories we tell, the wages we earn and the future we shape,” the project’s website says.

Female Fan Has Encounter With Andre 3000

The guy Andre 3000 is a puzzle wrapped in an enigma. Well, a female fan had an encounter with him in a strip club and laid out the whole thing on a message board. Check it out.

So last night me & my bitches went to the strip club last night in St. Louis. Any of y’all familiar with the EXTREME ghetto ratchet ass strip joint called BOTTOMS UP? Well anyways, we ended up getting V.I.P next thing I know , some skinny guy with a orange hat & white Diana Ross looking sunglasses came in. So I’m all in his face thinking DAMN I know this aint who the fuck I think it is. Come to find out It was 3 stacks. I BOUT MELTED. I immediately gave him a hug & susprisngly he embraced me back , I was shocked because it happened so unexpectedly.

Anyways we was talking for about 10 minutes , he’s very different indeed , but he such a fucking TURN ONN! Skinny ass, he stay in the club tho! I told him I miss him & I loved him & he was like I MISS YOU & LOVE YOU TOO BOO & we both started laughing! He was real down to earth. I had to soak up as much attention as I could from him because I knew it wasn’t going to be long until them stripper bitches came being thirsty. So after that I told him it was nice meeting him & we gave each other another hug & my face was in his neck so I kissed him, right on his neck, he was smelling so good, he smelt like an ocean breeze or some shit. NO lie , I seriously believe he was under the influence , it seem like he was just in a daze floating , I couldn’t see his eyes because of the dark lenses on his sunglasses. He wasn’t dressed fancy , his hair looked wild & his facial hair. He had this comfortable bummy look going on which fit him because that’s his style.

Next thing I know 3 bitches with big asses with no clothes on but thongs, not cute at all swarmed him , he got a lap dance by all 3 same damn time. Them hoes was going in , one of them was riding him from the back , ass all on his chest & the other two, one on each side, was shaking they ass in his face. I could tell he was enjoying himself. All that ass on him & in his face. I got mad like he was mines. He was laid back & them thick hoes swallowed him, he looked so small underneath those pigeons!

We also took a picture & also some guy kept taking a picture of him& Andre told him “ay man we can take a picture together , but please don’t take one of me by myself , could you delete those for me? Appreciate it” I wonder why he was so conscious with someone taking a solo picture of him? But didn’t mind taking a picture actually with someone? ANOTHER thing, this guy wears the same outfit a lot I see. He rocks the same fit for weeks.

Hollywood Is Finally Paying Attention to Female Moviegoers

Amy Schumer

Summer blockbuster season hasn’t always been the best time for a female moviegoer. Take a look at 2014’s offerings: Transformers: Age of Ultron, Godzilla, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Captain America: The Winter Soldier—not much variation outside of the comic-book canon. Typically, summer films cater to adolescent male viewers because, by and large, they go to more movies.

This year, however, that trend will be broken. So far the biggest box office hits of 2015—Fifty Shades of Grey, Cinderella, and Insurgent—have proved that women will come to theaters in droves, too, if you appeal to their tastes.

And while the upcoming slate of summer movies still contains the usual mix of comic book heroes (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man) and special effects bonanzas (Terminator Genisys), we’re predicting this recent female-driven box-office trend will continue all the way through Labor Day weekend. Here, five movies we’re sure will be massive hits come summer.

Tomorrowland, May 22
Young teenage heroines set against a dystopian backdrop (The Hunger Games, Insurgent) have proven to be box-office gold. In the upcoming sci-fi adventure film Tomorrowland, Britt Robertson travels to the titular setting and discovers she’s the only one who can save Earth from its eventual doom. The fact that George Clooney plays a genius inventor is sure to attract plenty of older female viewers as well.

Inside Out, June 19
It’s been awhile since we’ve been as excited about an animated film as we are about Pixar’s Inside Out. Comediennes Amy Poehler and Mindy Kaling lend their voices to this movie about a young girl’s inner feelings and are perfectly cast as Joy and Disgust, respectively.

Magic Mike XXL, July 1
If Fifty Shades of Grey taught us anything, it’s that sex sells. So it’s really no surprise that Magic Mike and his band of Tampa Bay strippers are back just in time to celebrate Independence Day weekend.

Trainwreck, July 17
After Bridesmaids’ massive success in 2011, some studios were clued into the fact that women love a good, raunchy comedy, too. Amy Schumer’s upcoming Trainwreck promises plenty of laughs and a leading lady behaving badly. If anyone can revive the stale rom-com genre, it’s her.

Paper Towns, July 24
If comic book movies are kryptonite for teenage boys, the same could be said for John Green film adaptations and teenage girls. From the same author who wrote the blockbuster The Fault in Our Stars comes another coming-of-age romance, Paper Towns. It’s sure to become the go-to movie for anyone who loves a good cry.

Phoenix Zoo Discovers Luka The Bear Is Female, Not Male

PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Zoo is fessing up to what it calls an “embearassing” mistake regarding one of its animals.

Zoo officials say they were planning to transfer Luka to the Nashville, Tennessee, zoo when they recently discovered that the 2-year-old Andean bear is a female, not a male as thought.

According to the Phoenix Zoo, Andean bear cubs’ genitalia are highly undeveloped before age 2, making it very difficult to determine gender.

The zoo said employees there also hadn’t handled the bear much because it was doing very well with its mother.

The zoo said Luka still might go to Nashville, but now that they know she’s a she, it opens up other options for the bear’s participation in a breeding program.

‘I Love Lucy & Bekka’ Creator Talks Female Friendships, Diversity And Gang-Bang Porn

Standing in her bathroom, Bekka passionately belts out an out-of-tune rendition of Katy Perry’s “Firework,” while her best friend Lucy sits on the toilet trying to decide whether her roommate has what it takes to audition for “The Voice.”

And that’s just the first episode of the web series “I Love Lucy & Bekka,” which seeks to give an honest look into the friendship of two girls via snippets of the quirky conversations and small experiences that bind them together. Roommates Lucy and Bekka, played, respectively, by Kristolyn Lloyd (“The Bold and the Beautiful”) and Gina Rodriguez (“Jane The Virgin”), are the main focus of the Los Angeles-set web series, which was released in full on YouTube late last month. The twelve episodes, each only an average of two minutes in length, cover everything from the similarities between gang bang porn and “The Bachelor” to what crosses your mind when you find out via Facebook that a past acquaintance has died.

The series began through a Kickstarter campaign in 2013. The show’s creator, NYU Tisch alumna and playwright Rachael Holder, 31, needed $ 5,500 to create the series, and ended up surpassing that target. The first episode has garnered nearly 15,000 views.

Holder spoke to The Huffington Post about what inspired the web series, what makes strong female friendships so unique and how she feels about writing for a diverse cast as a woman of color.

lucky and bekka

Kristolyn Lloyd (left) and Gina Rodriguez on the set of “I Love Lucy & Bekka.”

“I Love Lucy & Bekka” is a very focused web series. There’s almost zero emphasis on who these girls are as individuals, and all about who they are as best friends. Why did you decide to make their friendship the centerpiece?

I think that I really love writing women and I really like writing about female relationships because our friendships are really unique and intimate and interesting in that way. Men have bromances, and women have very complicated and glorious connections. I haven’t really seen much of that in TV. And I’m obsessed with my girlfriends. These conversations are very similar to the conversations that I had in my early 20s. You know, four hours a day just talking to each other on the phone or talking in the bathroom about whether or not we would still be friends if we were ghosts, and stuff like that.

I loved that time so much and I wanted to showcase a friendship that was about immediate forgiveness. There’s so many “odd couple” shows where the girls or the guys are so different that they clash and there is conflict all the time. I thought it would be interesting — just like in my own best friendship, when the conflict is that you love that person so much, and you’re still having intellectual conversations and giving them good advice, but it’s through love.

What truly caught my attention, though, was the fact that these episodes are incredibly short.

“Men have bromances, and women have very complicated and glorious connections.”

I think that I wanted to make sure that I was accomplishing the nugget of what was good about these conversations, instead of just waiting around to get to the golden part of it. I wanted to just get to the juice, get in and get out. … I wanted [the episodes] to be like Skittles, instead of long meals.

Gina Rodriguez is having a big moment right now with The CW’s “Jane The Virgin.” I know the web series was filmed before the show’s success, so how did you two connect for this project?

I met Gina my first year in LA. I met her at a party and she grabbed me and she was like, “You write funny stuff, we should work together one day.” So when we were casting this, Gina was one of the first names that came up in my mind. Then I just wanted to make sure that the person that we cast as Lucy had genuine chemistry with Gina. … When Kristolyn sat with her and they were just talking together, you could see the real friendship and the real chemistry between the two. It was a no-brainer.

And your two leads are actresses of color. That’s more diversity than you see on many shows today. Was that an intentional part of your casting process?

We did audition white actresses, we auditioned the entire rainbow, [but] when Kristolyn came in — as a person of color, as a writer of color — I crushed, to be completely honest. I was so excited and happy because I’m a person of color and I like to write for people of color and I especially like to write my voice for people of color. I think it’s a really exciting time right now … I think people are really excited to see more characters and actors of color on their screen.

lucy and bekka
Holder (left) behind the scenes of “I Love Lucy & Bekka.”

Writers approach their characters of color in different ways. Some feel it’s best to keep a character’s ethnicity or race in the background rather than emphasizing it. How do you feel on the subject?

I think in this first season of the show it wasn’t a focus of mine, because I was really focused on the girls. I’m not a colorblind person, and so when I write people of color, I am taking what makes them who they are into account. So I don’t think it’s something that I have to decide. But I never, ever want to put the color of someone’s skin to the side.

One of the more interesting episodes for me was “Porn.” I thought it made a unique comparison between how women are portrayed in gang-bang porn and how women are treated on “The Bachelor.” What prompted that one?

I think that porn is really interesting. I don’t like to watch women in porn. I think watching gay porn, like male gay porn to be specific, is just so much better because you don’t have to watch women crying. It’s just bad — female porn is just bad. Not gay female porn, but heterosexual girl-on-guy porn is the saddest thing I’ve seen in my life. And “The Bachelor” is incredibly similar to that kind of porn in that you do have a wide shot of a mansion, and then you do find these girls in pretty, nice dresses saying what they think love is. And by the end of the episode their mascara is running down their face and they’re crying.

The comparison is being done for me. I watched an episode from this past season and the farmer had them do a competition where they had to milk cows and then drink the milk as fast as possible while in bikinis. I mean they’re in bikinis, there’s white liquid coming out of their mouths.

That’s an image that’s going to be hard to get out of my head.

It’s crazy how similar it is. I find it really interesting that all of America is obsessed with “The Bachelor,” they think it’s an amazing show about love.

But shifting gears back to Lucy and Bekka, will viewers get to see more from these two soon?

Creatively, there is a second season. I have one, but we’re just not sure right now whether or not it will be in web series form or in a long-form context. … If people would like to know what happens next with Lucy and Bekka, they will probably learn what happens next. We’re excited to put that out there.

Maureen McGovern Celebrates Female Singer-Songwriters At New York’s 54 Below

Audiences hoping for Maureen McGovern to perform her signature hit, “The Morning After,” when she takes the stage of New York’s 54 Below might be surprised to find the Oscar-winning tune, made famous in 1972’s “The Poseidon Adventure,” missing from her set.

McGovern, 65, acknowledges how extraordinarily rare it is for an artist to omit one of their staples from a concert performance, but these days, she’s delving down a different, and in some respects more personal, path. Her latest act, appropriately titled “Sing, My Sisters, Sing!.” emphasizes the work of female singer-songwriters, including Annie Lennox, Laura Nyro, Janis Ian and Joni Mitchell, among others. (“The Morning After,” incidentally, was penned by two male writers, Joel Hirschhorn and Al Kasha)

The singer-actress, who last performed at 54 Below in 2012, spoke to The Huffington Post ahead of “Sing, My Sisters, Sing!” which opened at 54 Below March 10. Speaking by telephone from her home in Ohio, she discussed her love of the female voice in rock and pop and why she still loves the gypsy life after four decades in the business.

Congratulations on your return to New York’s 54 Below. What do you like most about performing here?
First, it’s a beautiful room. Broadway’s finest put it together and designed it. It’s a warm room, I like it very much.

What surprises can the 54 Below audience look forward to in your show?
The show is called “Sing, My Sister, Sing,” and it’s a celebration of women singer-songwriters, mostly from the second half of the 20th century, but with a nod back to my early singing sisters, like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, and even a nod back further to the late 1800s, the early poets who wrote poems that later became songs, paving the way for the singer-songwriters we know today.

When you put together a show like this, what is your thought process as far selecting material is concerned?
I wanted to do this idea for a long time. Several years ago, I was doing an AIDS benefit in San Francisco. Helen Reddy, who had taken a hiatus from show business for a while … she came out of semi-formal musical retirement and performed at the benefit. I was watching her rehearsal, and she just recited the words to “I Am Woman” with no music … and it was absolutely brilliant. It was chilling. That was kind of the genesis of it. I just thought that was the seed for [a show].

It’s time for women to have their due, because it’s a very rich chapter of the American pop songbook, and they write from a very introspective and intimate point of view. Very rich lyrics and very powerful lyrics.

Are you able to find ways to explore yourself through this music?
I always have. “West Side Story” got me through junior high, The Beatles got me through high school and Joni Mitchell got me through my divorce. I can’t imagine my late teens, early 20s on into my 30s without the canon of her music. She’s a goddess to me. She’s amazing.

Why do you think that this material stands the test of time as much as it does?
It stands the test of time because it’s about time! (laughs) I don’t tend to do a museum piece, I always find what’s relevant about this music today, whether that’s James Taylor, Paul Simon or Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Janis Ian … Janis Ian’s “At Seventeen” is just a masterpiece. What to leave out was hard!

Do you find that contemporary pop music has the same resonance for you, or has that changed?
I’m a dinosaur, somewhat, but I know I will be looking for more songs into the later 2000s. I tend to gravitate back to the songs that represented my coming-of-age. These are the songs that affected my life for the rest of my life, so that’s where I am right now. But I just scratched the surface knowingly with this show. There are several shows I can do and plan to do.

What do you like most about performing in New York?
What I love about cabaret in New York is that you can pick the most obscure song and somebody in the audience is going to know it and where it came from. It’s just a very sophisticated, wonderful audience.

This interview has been edited for clarity and length.

Genius Makeup Artist Transforms Himself Into Kim Kardashian, Dakota Johnson, Other Female Celebs

Paolo Ballesteros, a 32-year-old Filipino actor, model and makeup artist, wowed the Internet last year with his jaw-dropping ability to transform himself into seemingly any female celebrity under the sun — with little more than some deftly-applied makeup.

Ballesteros is making waves yet again this month with several new transformations. He made himself up as Kylie Jenner and as the newly-blond Kim Kardashian, as well as Dakota Johnson, the star of “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

All-Women Panel Talks TV Sex Scenes And The Problem With ‘Strong Female Characters’

The women of Showtime’s TV series just broke down exactly why sex scenes on television are so important.

On Jan. 12, the Television Critics Association held an all-women panel titled “Sexuality and Television: A Female Perspective.” The panel, which focused on the impact of sex scenes on TV, featured women from multiple Showtime series including actresses Emmy Rossum, Shanola Hampton (both from “Shameless”), Maura Tierney (“The Affair”), Caitlin FitzGerald (“Masters Of Sex”), and writer/producers Nancy Pimental (“Shameless”), Michelle Ashford (“Masters Of Sex”) and Sarah Treem (“The Affair”).

Rossum kicked off the session, telling the audience that sexuality is “no different from showing any other part of life” on television. “It’s interesting that the women who write on these shows get to explore different facets of sex: Sometimes (as humans) you have sex for reasons that have nothing to do with sex,” she said. “It’s about power, insecurity or maybe to feel good. These women don’t show it in a gratuitous way.

When one critic asked the panel whether sex scenes could reach the level of “exploitative,” Tierney responded that it’s subjective: “You have to be in the scene to decide if a scene is exploitative,” she said. “It’s up to the actor to decide.” Treem, who recently won a Golden Globe for Best Drama Series for “The Affair,” then added that she doesn’t feel that any of the three shows’ sex scenes are exploitative. “We use sex as communication in our show,” she said. “We hope our sex scenes move the story forward.”

“We don’t do the scenes unless they’re necessary. If they’re not furthering the story, they can be emotionally exploitative,” Rossum, who plays Fiona, a character who has a lot of sex on “Shameless,” agreed.

When the term “strong female character” came up the women had mixed feelings on the phrase and questioned whether it should be used at all. BuzzFeed reported that Treem said she didn’t mind the term: “When I hear ‘strong female character,’ what it says to me is a character that’s taking action and isn’t passive or reactive to a male character.”

FitzGerald expressed qualms with the term:

This word “strong,” I find a little tricky. We have heard ‘strong female character’ so frequently, and I think the word ‘strong’ puts me in line with a very specific masculine energy. I appreciate what the sentiment is supposed to be with that phrase… but all of us are strong in our vulnerability, our nakedness, emotionally or otherwise. And so, I just think we need other kinds of words: “comprehensive,” “whole,” “complete,” “real.”

“How about just ‘strong character’?” Rossum chimed in. “I’ve never heard anybody say ‘strong male character.’ Nobody talks about that at all. I guess men have always been No. 1 on the call sheet, but now women are and that’s great. So let’s not make it a gender thing.”

Rossum summed up the theme of the panel discussion perfectly when she said, “There’s no lack of balls on behalf of our writers to write a female character who is gutsy,” Deadline reported. “We’re not confined to showing the most culturally acceptable part of the character. We show everything about them.”
