Pygmalion is a play by George Bernard Shaw, named after a Greek mythological figure. It was first presented on stage to the public in 1913. Professor of phonetics Henry Higgins makes a bet that he can train a bedraggled Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party by teaching her to assume a veneer of gentility, the most important element of which, he believes, is impeccable speech. The play is a sharp lampoon of the rigid British class system of the day and a commentary on women's independence.

"Good Night, And, Good Luck" takes place during the early days of broadcast journalism in 1950's America. It chronicles the real-life conflict between television newsman Edward R. Murrow and Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee. With a desire to report the facts and enlighten the public, Murrow, and his dedicated staff – headed by his producer Fred Friendly and Joe Wershba in the CBS newsroom – defy corporate and sponsorship pressures to examine the lies and scaremongering tactics perpetrated by McCarthy during his communist 'witch-hunts'. A very public feud develops when the Senator responds by accusing the anchor of being a communist. In this climate of fear and reprisal, the CBS crew carries on and their tenacity will prove historic and monumental.

He is held by an ancient seal, imprisoned for centuries in a barren field near the hamlet of Rathmore, Ireland. In time, this gruesome legacy has been forgotten, dismissed as an odd pre-Christian myth until Tom Garron (Donal McCann, December Bride) decides to plow the field his ancestors knew better than to disturb. The seal is broken and an unspeakable evil is unleashed – on a rampage of blood and lust. Howard Hallenbeck (David Dukes, Gods and Monsters), an American historian on a working vacation with his family, discovers on the stained glass windows of a local church a series of scenes illustrating the reign of terror of RawHead Rex, but the one piece of glass depicting the defeat of the monster is missing. RawHead Rex is on the loose, and he is insatiable as Howard is desperately races against time for a way to stop the vicious monster. Directed by George Pavlou (Transmutations) with a screenplay by horror legend Clive Barker (Hellraiser, Candyman, Nightbreed, Lord of Illusions).

Hindsight, foresight, oversight — depending on perspective, all may apply to words spoken by some of the more established cultural figures who died in the past year.
Over the years, WWD sat down with numerous designers, politicians and writers to reveal their ambitions and obstacles alike. Here are a few of the more memorable lines spoken by some who helped to define the world we live in.
Hubert de Givenchy
“Mine is one of the most beautiful professions in fashion: making others happy with an idea.”
“Balenciaga was my religion,” Givenchy said, explaining that he assembled more than 1,000 dresses for the collection of the Spanish designer’s creations. “Since I’m a believer, for me, there’s Balenciaga and the good Lord. Balenciaga had a sense of construction of clothes. He did things that were intelligent, which isn’t the case today. People are interested in glitz.”
“Fashion’s over. There are bags and shoes that are more and more ugly. That’s all. There are perfumes and everyone talks of luxury. But for me, luxury is, in part, to be well-dressed.”
Kate Spade on starting her own company over dinner with her husband in an Upper East Side Mexican restaurant: “Andy said, ‘Why don’t you do handbags? You love handbags,

Shot outside Pittsburgh on a shoestring budget by a band of filmmakers determined to make their mark, Night of the Living Dead, directed by horror master George A. Romero, is one of the great stories of independent cinema: a midnight hit turned box-office smash that became one of the most influential films of all time. A deceptively simple tale of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse who find themselves fending off a horde of recently dead, flesh-eating ghouls, Romero’s claustrophobic vision of a late-1960s America literally tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre, combined gruesome gore with acute social commentary, and quietly broke ground by casting a black actor (Duane Jones) in its lead role. Stark, haunting, and more relevant than ever, Night of the Living Dead is back.

JW Anderson Looks to Eighties Gilbert & George for Spring 2019 Capsule

LONDON — Jonathan Anderson is looking to the Eighties works of Gilbert & George, and specifically their early street shots of East End boys, for a men’s and women’s capsule that will launch Dec. 3 at Matchesfashion.com.
JW Anderson x Gilbert & George is part of the designer’s spring/summer 2019 collection and is meant to celebrate the artists, their take on masculinity and British modern life. Anderson has focused on three of his favorite works by the artistic duo: “Guard Plants” (1980), “Dog Boy” (1980) and “Heavy” (1988).
Gilbert & George’s candid shots of “normal” kids on the streets of London’s East End helped to make them famous, and by the end of the decade, works such as Heavy had become more stylized and reflective of the duo’s love of William Blake’s poetry.
“Guard Plants” shows the face of a boy in military-style uniform framed by leaves and vines in intense primary colors, while “Dog Boy” is a black-and-white shot of a teenage kid flanked by rows of flowers in full bloom. “Heavy” shows three dreamy young men floating in the sky with hair that looks as if it’s on fire.

The wife, a tall, aristocratic looking woman who, despite her advanced years, her snow-white hair, her eyes now red and swollen from weeping, and pallid face seamed with careworn lines from constant vigils, still showed traces of former beauty, scanned the physician fearfully, trying to read in the expression of his countenance what the friend and man of science, out of sheer compassion, was doing his utmost to conceal. He had just emerged from the sick chamber; the trained nurse, methodical and quick, and singularly attractive looking in her neat uniform, had closed the door noiselessly behind him. Two young girls, one about eighteen and the other some four years her junior, both possessing more than average good looks, stood timidly in the background anxiously awaiting, together with their grief-stricken mother, to hear the dreaded verdict. The physician paid no attention to them, but paced up and down the room, his manner stern and forbidding, his head inclined in deep thought, as if bent under the weight of tremendous responsibilities. A noted specialist in pulmonary troubles, Dr. Wilston Everett was well past middle age, and his tall, erect figure, massive frame and fine, leonine head, crowned by a mass of stubborn, iron-gray hair, made him a conspicuous figure everywhere. His expression, stern in repose, was that of a profound student; it was a face where lofty thoughts, humane feeling and every other noble attribute had left its indelible impress.

George A. Romero

Genre: Horror

Price: $ 3.99

Rental Price: $ 0.99

Release Date: March 16, 1973

George Romero's name may be synonymous with the living dead sub-genre, but his filmography is far richer and more varied than his reputation as "the zombie guy" would suggest. Following the breakout success of his debut feature Night of the Living Dead, the director would embark upon a series of projects which demonstrate a master filmmaker with more than mere gut-munching on his mind.

The Crazies sees Romero returning to firmer horror territory as a small rural town finds itself in the grip of an infection which send its hosts into a violent, homicidal frenzy. This version of the film comes from a brand new 4K restoration of the original theatrical version from the camera negative.

This film, along with Season of the Witch and There's Always Vanilla, made in the period between Romero's celebrated living dead outings, Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, serve to shine a light on the broader thematic concerns and auteurist leanings of a skilled craftsman too often pigeonholed within the genre.

A Star is Born marked Judy Garland's return to movies after a four-year absence, director George Cukor's first musical and first color film, and a showcase for great Harold Arden/Ira Gershwin songs in state-of-the-art stereo. One of the most beloved show-business stories of all time, it represents a career peak for many involved. Garland is singer Esther Blodgett, an undeniable talent on the rise. She catches the eye of Norman Maine (James Mason), an alcoholic actor in career decline. Their intense love transforms them both. Only one will survive Hollywood's slings and arrows. Shortened in response to exhibitor complaints after its premiers, the movie underwent one rebirth in 1983 when film historian Ronald Haver found almost all the cut sequences and supervised a reconstruction to near its original length. Its new rebirth is this breathtaking digital surround stereo track and incorporating picture and musical material recently found in the vaults. Star always had a shine to it. Now watch it sparkle as never before.

George Zimmerman Threatened Jay-Z, Beyoncé During Production Of Trayvon Martin Doc

Judge in George Zimmerman stalking case: 'I hate to keep saying that name out loud'

Source: Orlando Sentinel / Getty

George Zimmerman and his alt-right tough guy act is still very much a thing, and now he’s aiming that faux aggression at two of the world’s biggest entertainers. According to new reports, the failed former night watchman issued threats toward Jay-Z and Beyoncé during the production of the recently-released Trayvon Martin documentary series.

The Blast reports:

In a series of text messages obtained The Blast, Zimmerman called Beyoncé a “broke whore” and promised she and Jay would “find themselves inside a 13 foot gator.”

The indirect threats on their lives appear in the upcoming finale of the six-part documentary series.

We’re told the messages were sent when Zimmerman was contacted by Dennis Warren, a private investigator who tracked down potential participants for the series. Warren found himself on the receiving end of hundreds of harassing messages and voicemails from the man acquitted in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

It isn’t immediately known if a criminal investigation of the threats will take place. Naturally, Jay-Z and Beyoncé have not responded to Zimmerman.

Genre: Documentary

Price: $ 7.99

Rental Price: $ 0.99

Release Date: February 23, 2016

“CAROLE KING: NATURAL WOMAN” tells, in Carole’s own words, of her family and her upbringing in Brooklyn, and the subsequent success as part of husband and wife songwriting team Goffin & King for Aldon Music in New York City. It was during this era in the early sixties that they created a string of pop hits such as 'Take Good Care of My Baby' for Bobby Vee, ‘The Locomotion’ for Little Eva, and 'Will You Love Me Tomorrow' for the Shirelles, which became the first number 1 hit by a black American girl group. Not to mention the era-defining 'Up On The Roof' for the Drifters, and the magnificent ‘Natural Woman’ for Aretha Franklin. By 1970 Carole was divorced from husband and songwriting partner Gerry Goffin, and relocated to Los Angeles. It was here that she created her classic solo album Tapestry, sung from the heart and packed with iconic tunes some of which include her own honest lyrics. The album includes tracks ‘It’s Too Late’ with lyrics by Toni Stern, ‘I Feel the Earth Move’ and ‘You’ve Got A Friend.’ It held the record for the most weeks at number 1 for nearly 20 years. It has become a staple in everyone’s record collection, and has sold over 25 million copies to date. “CAROLE KING: NATURAL WOMAN” features previously unseen and rare performance material and home movies, with Carole in a new interview and archive interviews telling her life story as an acclaimed singer-songwriter. To date, more than 400 of her compositions have been recorded by over 1,000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles. More recently, Carole was a recipient of the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors which celebrates the honorees’ lifetime artistic achievements. Whilst in 2014 a Broadway production ‘Beautiful’ (which tells her life story during the Goffin & King era) has received rave reviews winning a Tony Award and two Olivier Awards for the London production. In 2013, Carole was the first woman to be awarded the prestigious Gershwin Prize for Popular Song by the Library of Congress for her songwriting. Nowadays Carole King sees herself as much as an eco-activist as a songwriter. She is to be found constantly lobbying Congress in defense of the wildlife and eco-systems of her beloved Idaho. Featuring new interviews with fellow writers Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, Carole’s daughter Sherry Goffin Kondor, legendary manager/producer Lou Adler, former manager Peter Asher, lyricists Carol Bayer Sager & Toni Stern, musicians Russ Kunkel and Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar and childhood friend and director, Joel Zwick.

George Feldenkreis Pushes for Definitive Time Frame on Offer

George Feldenkreis is pushing the Perry Ellis International Inc.’s Special Committee to wrap things up regarding their review of his offer to acquire the company.
In a letter to the company dated May 23, the former chairman said that since announcing his offer in February to acquire shares of Perry Ellis not already beneficially owned by him, he has negotiated with the committee in good faith, but that the same courtesy has not been shown to him. The proposal at $ 27.50 a share “offers a high certainty of closing for shareholders with our due diligence complete and financing in place,” the letter said.
Feldenkreis noted that the process has been extended to almost four months. He is also pushing the Special Committee to commit to concluding negotiations and enter into a definitive agreement by May 29.
The former chairman also said of his offer, “If the Special Committee cannot commit to that time frame, I will withdraw my proposal and pursue all other rights as a shareholder.”
On May 18, Feldenkreis nominated a slate of directors to the company’s board for election at the next annual meeting of shareholders. The date and location of the Perry Ellis meeting has yet to be revealed.

The Madness of King George, Based on Alan Bennett's acclaimed play The Madness of George III, takes a dark-humored look at the mental decline of King George III of England. Taking place in 1788, the film’s story begins three decades into George's reign, as the unstable king (Nigel Hawthorne) begins to show signs of increasing dementia, from violent fits of foul language to bouts of forgetfulness. The King's prime minister William Pitt (Julian Wadham) and his wife Queen Charlotte (Helen Mirren) are determined to protect the throne during this time of weakness, when many see it as an opportunity to overthrow the unpopular George, whom they blamed for the loss of the American colonies. Although doctors are brought in, their archaic treatments of the time prove of little value and therefore, in desperation, they turn to Dr. Willis (Ian Holm), a harsh, unconventional specialist whose unusual methods recall modern psychiatry. George experiences an unfamiliar anger and haughtiness as Willis struggles to break through to the mad king. Stressing the absurdity of the entire situation, Bennett's witty screenplay emphasizes dry humor over tragedy, even utilizing references to King Lear for comic effect.

Good-guy George Clooney is not an act

“The best movies are on late at night. Flip the channel or you go on Netflix or one of those things and pull up ‘Philadelphia Story,’ or one of those, and you realize why they still hold up and why they’re really the best. I was watching ‘Carnal Knowledge’ the other night, which was made in the ’70s. When you go back and watch these films, the reason they were the best was because they were doing it first. There’s this great sense of joy.”

George Kotsiopoulos to Host Wedding Makeover Series on TLC

Stylist, fashion editor and on-air personality George Kotsiopoulos has been tapped as host of a new TLC wedding makeover series, “Say Yes: Wedding SOS.” The reality show premieres on the cable network Jan. 20 at 9 p.m. and is part of a Saturday night block of programming built around TLC’s wedding franchise “Say Yes to the Dress.”
Each hour-long episode will focus on transforming couples who may have gotten too comfortable in their old clothes. Kotsiopoulos will work with the bride and groom on everything from wardrobe and hair to veneers and tattoo removal in the days prior to the wedding. Viewers will go along for the ride as the couples go through custom suit and gown fittings, liposuction, corrective eye surgery, micro-blading and laser hair removal, among other improvements.
“I love this show because it’s sweet and 100 percent positive, particularly in these times when there is so much negativity out there,” said Kotsiopoulos, who previously was a host on E Network’s “Fashion Police.” “People love makeover shows in general because they provide hope and, when done well, enough realistic takeaways for them to apply to their own lives. This was my main goal while shooting the show by sharing tips

George Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation

[New York, 3 October 1789]

By the President of the United States of America. a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to
implore his protection and favor–and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me “to recommend to the People of the
United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God
especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.”

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that
great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be–That we may then all unite in rendering
unto him our sincere and humble thanks–for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation–for the
signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war–for
the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed–for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled
to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted–for the civil and
religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and
various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon
our national and other transgressions–to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly
and punctually–to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional
laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed–to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us)
and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord–To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of
science among them and us–and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New-York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.
