The Best Grooming Products to Transform Dry Hair

If you have dry hair, you experience less grime and buildup than guys who have scalps that produce more oil (which is basically like a natural, all-day leave-in conditioner). That means your hair can often become brittle, wilting, and prone to breaking, making it harder to style.

The 7 Best Products for Thick, Wiry Hair

Like overly oily or thinning hair, it’s entirely possible to personalize your grooming regimen to overcome your natural dryness, and to condition the hair so it stays soft and stylable, You’ve got your work cut out for you, but with the proper products and regimen, it’s smooth sailing.

Here are some of our favorites—consider it a push in the right direction.

Jack Black MP10 Nourishing Oil

With a blend of 10 natural oils (argan, marula, and grape seed are the most prominent), this oil works on hair, beards, faces, and more. Use it with your usual go-to styling product; it delivers the necessary nourishment to keep strands soft yet defined all day—and with a natural shine to boot. You can also use it on its own if you have longer hair to tame frizz and flyaways. It’ll nurture dryer-than-usual ends to prevent splitting, too.

Shu Uemura Absolue Overnight Hair Serum

An overnight hair mask that won’t stain your pillows, Shu Uemura’s serum absorbs quick and delivers high-powered nourishment to hair. It can tame the effects of humidity (i.e. frizz), while preserving natural shine and buoyancy. You can go right into your styling regimen in the morning, since there’s no need to rinse it out.

American Crew Matte Styling Cream

Don’t be befuddled by the key ingredients in American Crew’s styling cream. Panthenol is a B5 derivative that strengthens the hair and thickens its appearance, and benzophenones help shield it from environmental damage. Together, they add moisture and prevent anything from compromising hydration levels throughout the day. You’ll get shine-free, lightweight, medium-hold style as a bonus.

Kiehl’s Damage Repairing & Rehydrating Leave-In Conditioner

Mix a few drops of Kiehl’s leave-in conditioner with your daily styler, or use it as a lightweight styling cream on its own. It’s loaded with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and moringa oil, a trio that delivers and preserves moisture and defends hair against the elements. (If you use a blow dryer, you can also apply it before drying, so it helps shield from heat damage. But also, you should pick up an ionic dryer, per our tip at the end of this list.) This product will keep hair hydrated and soft all day; it’s the perfect complement to a nightly serum.

Davines MOMO Shampoo

This gentle gel shampoo pulls away excess grime and product without compromising the hair’s natural moisture. “What moisture?” you ask. Touché, but since you still need to wash your head, do it with a shampoo like Davines’, which uses cartucciaru melon to soften and nourish hair, as well as a host of ingredients to strengthen and protect it: Vitamin A and C, sinc, potassium, and phosphorus.

Hair Rituel by Sisley Restructuring Conditioner

If you’re super serious about fighting back against stubborn, dry hair, then use Sisley’s conditioner. With Vitamin B5, shea and coconut oils, as well as cotton proteins, it resuscitates dry, lifeless hair. In an instant, it feels fuller, softer, and more cooperative.

Parlux 385 Powerlight Ionic Hair Dryer

If you use a hair dryer to style your hair, invest in an ionic one. They dry hair quickly without the same heat-damaging effects of other devices. This one from Parlux is a great pick. It dries hair from the inside out. It’s also low-volume, lightweight, and high-powered, so you can tote it on trips and spend less time on your morning regimen.

The 7 Best Products for Thick, Wiry Hair

Some guys would do anything to have thick hair, but not you: You’d trade a limb if it meant you could find the right thick hair products to keep your full and furious mane under control. You watch with envy as other guys go through the day with effortless, weightless styles, while you contemplate a permanent buzz-cut just to save your sanity.

The 7 Best Curly Hair Products for Great Hair Days Every Day

Don’t give in to the clippers yet, though. You just have to learn how to tame the mane, and there are plenty of thick hair products to help you do it. With these simple additions to your hair care and styling routine, your perspective on thick, wiry locks will definitely change for the better.

Kevin Murphy Smooth Again Conditioner

Kevin Murphy’s conditioner uses keratin proteins to soften and smoothen thick, unruly hair. With a blend of oils and butters (like cocoa seed butter, Brazil nut butter, and monoi oil), it hydrates, tames any curls, minimizes breakage, and defends against split ends and frizzing. Use it daily to keep hair soft and smooth, and since it washes away grime, you can reduce shampoo usage to once per week.

Function of Beauty Leave-In Treatment

Complete Function Of Beauty’s questionnaire, and you’ll get a unique shampoo and conditioner for your specific hair type. Now you can also add a leave-in treatment to your order, which will increase the nourishing and softening effects of the shampoo and conditioner. Just comb it into your hair like a styling cream and wear it all day long. It tames hair while keeping it hydrated, and it shields each strand from UV exposure.

Bumble and Bumble Thick (H)air Styler

Unruly as it may be, thick hair can actually minimize the time you spend on your styling regimen. This is a heat-free cream styler, which means you apply it to towel-dried hair and let it set to avoid the drying and volumizing effects of a blow dryer. It softens, tames, de-frizzes, prevents split ends, and blocks UV rays, too.

Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3

Before you wash or condition your hair, first rinse it clean and then comb in some of Olaplex’s Hair Perfector. Let it set for 10 minutes, and then continue with your usual regimen. The treatment was formulated by two chemists who formulated it with ingredients that relax, soften, and fortify the structure of the hair, making it more cooperative—finally.

Baxter of California Grooming Cream

Guys with wiry hair can approach stylers in one of two ways: First, you can use a soft product that adds shine and definition without actually taming anything aside from frizz. These will showcase the volume and strength of your hair, but they’re not going to lock it into place. Baxter of California’s Grooming Cream is one such product. Typically we’d recommend it to guys with finer, more relaxed hair, but it’s just as useful if you use it with the right intentions. Add a touch of hair oil to it, too, if you want even more shine to pop through.

[$ 20; baxterofcalifornia.com]

Firsthand Clay Pomade

On the other hand, you probably want a high-hold styler for most days—something that will let you lock in a combed-back style without worrying about it coming undone by noon. Firsthand’s Clay Pomade is exactly that. It gives you a matte finish, and you can use it to prop up more volumized styles. If you like the product but want more shine, drop in a pinch of hair oil.

Old Spice Beard Oil

Sure, it’s made for beards, but this oil is also great for the thick and wiry hair on your head, too. The argan-oil blend helps tame flyaways and prevent split ends, and it adds a little shine and definition to your thick texture. Just put one or two drops into your palm along with a matte styler and apply them together.

The 7 Best Curly Hair Products for Great Hair Days Every Day

When you have naturally curly hair, “perfect hair days” are often few and far between. That’s because each unruly strand has its own agenda—as do external forces like humidity, dehydration, and sun damage. To deal with this, you need curly hair products that can keep your locks hydrated but not weighed down, lifelike but also under control.

How to Get Justin Theroux’s Tousled Hair and Beard Style

That means stocking up on the right shampoo, conditioner, humidity shield, styler, and tools, and dedicating a few extra minutes each morning to applying them—it’ll spare you the frizz and fuss throughout the day. Here are our recs for the best curly hair products to try out.

SheaMoisture Detangling Shampoo

If your curls are coiled or afro-textured, they can shrink down and turn lifeless without proper nourishment. SheaMoisture’s sulfate-free shampoo doesn’t just flush away grime and grease; it also bathes hair with coconut oil, cocoa butter, red palm oil, and flaxseed oil. Together, these ingredients hydrate hair and preserve its volume and texture while shielding it from environmental damage and preventing tangles.

Davines Love Curl Shampoo

Fueled by almond extract, Davines’ Love Curl Shampoo preserves the buoyancy of wavy and curly hair. It also delivers a hint of natural shine to each strand, so your hair’s fullness and depth will be on full display. Unlike many other shampoos, this protein- and vitamin-rich formula adds moisture back into the hair (still, as with any shampoo, it’s important to follow a wash with a conditioner).

[$ 28; us.davines.com]

Sachajuan Curl Conditioner

We don’t advise washing your hair every day, since it can strip your hair of its natural, healthy oils. But you may need to do it more often than the average person, since those oils can also weigh curly hair down and compromise natural volume. Your best friend is a daily conditioning product that pumps nutrients back into the hair after a wash, or between washes. Sachajuan’s Curl Conditioner uses the brand’s propietary Ocean Silk Technology to lock in moisture and emphasize the volume and texture of your curls. Just comb it into your hair—in the shower or out—and rinse after one to two minutes.

Bumble and bumble Curl Defining Creme

Part styler, part leave-in conditioner, this cream helps define curls while blocking damaging UV rays and preventing frizz caused by humidity and dehydration. The oil- and humectant-packed formula keeps the hairs in line—leaving plenty of room for effortless movement. It’s most effective when applied to dry or towel-dried hair, then blown dry with a diffuser.

[$ 31; bumbleandbumble.com]

Ouai Wave Spray

This spray uses rice proteins to texturize (that also means it’s safe to use on color-treated hair) and it lifts hair instead of weighing it down like other products do. It’s formulated to tame your locks and prevent them from coming undone during the day, and it adds a natural shine as well.

[$ 26; theouai.com]

Bio Ionic 10X Ultralight Speed Dryer

Often the best way to maintain control over your unruly curls is to blow dry them into place. Bio Ionic’s dryer does this in less time, preventing heat damage and preserving the moisture and shine in each strand. But to really treat your curls right, grab a diffuser attachment, which concentrates the hot air into smaller pockets to dry thick, curly hair more evenly.

Living Proof Humidity Shield

Humidity can ruin even the best hair day. That’s why you should have a humidity-shielding spray at the ready, and apply it at the end of your daily haircare regimen. Living Proof’s spray uses a humidity-resistant polymer that blocks both unwanted moisture and UV rays for frizz and sun protection. It helps condition the hair, too, so it won’t detract from any other products you’ve applied to your curls.

Turns out, there’s an easy solution for or all of the most common hair problems. You just need the perfect product. But even for specific issues like dry scalp or thinning hair, there are a whole store-load of hair products that claim big benefits. Sorting through the sea of creams, shampoos, and spritzes can be a bit daunting. We’re here to help.

The 5 Most Effective Ways to Regrow Thinning Hair

Tame Frizz

To control flyaway hairs and frizz, skip heavy-duty pomades and grab this mild cream instead. It offers hold without weighing down hair, and the aloe-based formula conditions and moisturizes.

The 5 Most Effective Ways to Regrow Thinning Hair

At the first sign of hair loss—or even before that, if you’re proactive—you should visit your board-certified dermatologist to discuss the latest and most effective retention and prevention tactics. (Assuming you want to keep your hair, that is.)

There are numerous options available to men now, and they each have extremely high success rates. We tapped our network of experts to get their opinions on the most common methods. Before we get into them, here’s what some of those board-certified dermatologists have to say about the road ahead.

1. Start Early

“We know the best chance to regrow, retain, and fortify hair is with early intervention,” says Robert Finney, M.D. of Heights Dermatology and Laser. “If you start to notice thinning, that’s when you should begin treatment. Don’t be in denial.”

The longer you wait, the less effective results are: “Men who begin to notice a bit of early thinning with hair loss starting at the vertex of their scalp, but who aren’t completely bald, have the best chance to slow down loss, halt loss altogether (by maintaining their hair density), and even regrow some or all of their hair,” says Laura Haygood, M.D., of Adagio Dermatology & Aesthetics. “This means the earlier you start, the better the results, in general.”

7 Biggest Grooming Mistakes Balding Men Make

2. Recession Is an Exception

“A receding frontal hairline rarely responds to treatment,” warns Haygood. “Men may focus on regrowing hair along the entirety of the frontal, crown, and vertex of the scalp.” The vertex is that transition point between the crown and midscalp.

3. Be Patient

“Whichever hair treatment you choose, it’s important not to give up on the treatment too quickly and stick with it for at least 3-6 months,” says Lindsey Yeh, M.D. It takes time for hair to grow and actually see changes.

You’re playing a long game (forever, even): “Once you notice improvement, you must maintain the treatment regimen to retain these results,” Haygood adds. “So, if and when you decide to stop treatment, the hair simply gradually reverts to the density it would have otherwise been at that point in your life.”

6 Best Fixes for Hair Loss

The 5 Best Methods to Regrow Hair

1. The Pill

One of the most common means of regrowing hair is a 1mg prescription of finasteride. (That’s its generic name. You may know it as Propecia.) It inhibits the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which gradually suffocates and shrinks hair follicles, causing hair to thin and fall away before the follicle dries up.

“Oral finasteride is a great treatment for male-pattern baldness,” says Anne Marie McNeill, Ph.D M.D. of Newport Beach Dermatology. “It’s simple, safe, and one study just showed it reduces your chance of prostate cancer, aside from helping to grow hair.” As we mentioned, start when you’re just starting to thin, and it’ll help you keep the hair you have.

“Oral finasteride is one of the best treatment options available,” echoes Finney. However, a small percentage of people can experience a sexual side effect, like decreased libido and erectile dysfunction. “If someone has tried this and experienced those side effects, or is concerned about them, I shift the discussion toward a topical finasteride and minoxidil combination, like HairStim by Hair Medicinals,” Finney says. “HairStim is a prescription solution that combines these drugs—and the minoxidil is at higher concentrations than you can get over the counter.” (See the next tip for more on minoxidil.) “I’ve found patients who had a sexual side effect from finasteride orally, don’t get it from topicals.” That’s because it’s not getting absorbed in your blood and traveling around your body.

Thinning Up Top? Here Are 5 Ways to Get Thicker, Fuller Hair

2. The Potion

The other at-home option you hear about most often is minoxidil, the generic for Rogaine. It works by stimulating blood circulation to hair follicles, which in turn fattens the hair shaft and strengthens the follicle. It’s administered as a topical solution or foam twice daily.

“One tip I share with patients is that there are special compounding pharmacies (often the Mom & Pop pharmacies we love, rather than the big chain pharmacies) who are happy to provide an even stronger version,” says Haygood. “Many of my patients like the 7% minoxidil, although in the end I recommend choosing based on cost, convenience, and how the product feels on your skin, especially since you’ll be using it on a daily basis.”

Nearly every doctor you consult will advise combination therapy to further boost your results, and a combination of finasteride + minoxidil is the most common pairing.

3. The Plasma
In the last couple years, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has grown enormously in popularity. It involves extracting one’s own blood, separating the plasma (which takes 10 minutes, in office), then injecting that plasma back into the patient’s scalp. Plasma has active growth factors that can stimulate inactive or weakened follicles. It’s also a common combination therapy method, paired with finasteride, minoxidil, or both.

“PRP is my favorite treatment for hair growth, and studies show 75 percent of men see [significant] hair growth,” says Anna Karp, D.O. of Skin Institute of New York. “I recommend two treatments, one month apart, at minimum.” (Many doctors will advocate for 4 monthly treatments out the gate, followed by an annual top-off.)

“PRP is natural and doesn’t require patients to remember to do anything at home,” says Finney. “It’s a much newer treatment, but has proven over the last several years to be a great option to regrow, retain, and fortify.”

How to Treat Thinning Hair: the Modern Guide

4. The Program
An effective at-home supplement and grooming regimen can also fortify hair and help revive some of the weakened, near-death follicles. It’s important to note that these are not nearly as promising as the above methods, but supplements are also no gimmick: They provide the nourishment your hair needs to stay strong. So, perhaps it’s as much a prevention and proactive method.

“We find by combining as many techniques as possible to combat all the possible causes we will yield the best results,” says Matthew Elias, D.O., of Elias Dermatology.

“I typically recommend a hair vitamin such as Nutrafol, Viviscal, or biotin forte with zinc,” says Lauren Meshkov Bonati, M.D., of Mountain Dermatology. “I also suggest they use Nioxin shampoo and conditioner.”

5. The Procedure
If all else fails, or if those patches are just too far along, it might be time to consider a hair transplant—if you’re that invested in this process. Talk to your doctor about the best options available, and for his or her recommendation on where to do it. This should really be a last resort, since results vary drastically.

Know that emerging technologies are suggesting we may soon be able to clone hairs and grow them anywhere we please. But in the meantime, this method extracts thicker hairs from the sides and back of your head, and places them in areas of inactive growth to “fill in” the hair. It takes a while to see results, too: After a couple months, the transplanted hair will fall out, only to begin its first new growth cycle. So, once that springs out and fills in, it could take 4-6 months to see lasting results (albeit temporary ones, if you aren’t proactive about retaining it this go around).

“I usually encourage patients to try topicals for 6+ months before deciding if it’s worked for them,” says Avnee Shah, M.D., of the Dermatology Group. “[Still then,] I encourage a combination of therapies. The more the merrier.”

The 7 Best Customized Hair, Skin, and Cologne Brands for Men

In the grooming industry, 2019 will be known as the year of customized care. More and more brands are allowing consumers to identify concerns and goals as they pertain to skin, hair, hygiene, and more.

They ask you to complete online questionnaires—some simple, some insanely extensive—and pack their products with ingredients, and even scents, that address your wants and needs on a granular level. After all, if you’ve got curly, coarse, and oily hair as well as dandruff, your shampoo and conditioner should have different ingredients than the guy with straight, fine hair with no flaking. Think of all the possible skincare combinations, too, when you factor in oil levels, age, environmental factors, and more.

Here are seven brands that helped launch the phenomenon, and each company’s approach to customized products. If you’re less than satisfied with your current regimen, it might be time to invest in something tailored precisely to you.

The Best Men’s Grooming Products to Take on the Go

Function Of

What it’s for: Customized hair care

The Function Of Beauty site prompts you to create your hair profile. Is it wavy, curly, or straight? Is it fine or coarse? Oily or dry, or neither? Next, you input up to five “hair goals”, which could be anything from soothing your scalp to volumizing, oil control to minimizing frizz. This all determines which ingredients go into each product. You pick individual colors for your shampoo and conditioner set, as well as a scent, and the brand even prints your name on the side of each bottle. Costs vary depending on the sizes you order, but if you get 16 oz. bottles of shampoo and conditioner (which should last 3 months), it’s under $ 50.

Curology

What it’s for: Customized skincare

Curology’s online quiz asks about your major skincare concerns and goals, then generates a “superbottle” night cream just for you (once a dermatologist reviews your results). Apply it before you sleep, so your skin’s overnight regenerative cycle works with the product to correct things like acne, signs of aging, or uneven skin tone. You can order the superbottle along with a standard cleanser and daytime moisturizer, too, or just opt for the standalone night cream.

Clinique

What it’s for: Customized skincare

With the recent launch of iD, Clinique enters the custom skincare game with its own refined approach to the process. First, you pick your base—moisturizing lotion, oil-control gel, or hydrating jelly—then you select your “insert cartridge” from the list of five: fatigue, lines & wrinkles, pores & uneven texture, irritation, or uneven skin tone. Any of the 15 potential results costs comes in under $ 40.

Hawthorne

What it’s for: Customized fragrance and hygiene

Hawthorne works with some of the industry’s most sought-after perfumers to create a bunch of different fragrances to match each customer’s personality. You fill out their quiz that factors in things like diet and personal interests, and they set you up with two fragrances: one for “work” and one for “play”, both for a total $ 100. They complement each other nicely, but more importantly, they complement you. And just recently, Hawthorne expanded into scented deodorant, soap, and body wash, too, so you can smell and feel as fresh as each scent you’re “prescribed”—whether you’re wearing it or not.

Geologie

What it’s for: Customized skincare

Geologie’s diagnostic quiz is a little simpler than the competition, but that’s not to any detriment: They still address the core things like aging, inflammation, acne, and so forth, with dozens of possible outcomes for the five-product assortment they’ll send you. First they’ll start you on a 30-day trial with the entire set—cleansers for your sink and shower, moisturizers for day and night, and an eye cream. After you test them out, you can order a 90-day supply of whichever products you like best, or all of them if you so choose.

Prose

What it’s for: Hair care

Prose’s quiz asks you questions about your hair’s thickness, length, typical hair fall patterns, oil levels, as well as your diet, zip code (to determine pollution), and more. You tell Prose your goals, what kind of fragrance to plug into the formula, and then Prose generates a product to target your key concerns—with various levels of intensity (like if you’ve got severe dandruff but moderate oil production). They give you the option of a pre-shampoo hair mask, shampoo, and conditioner, all for $ 88, or you can pick and choose the ones you want to buy (for $ 38, $ 25, $ 25, respectively). There’s a hair oil launching in spring, as well, which can then be added to your order.

[From $ 25; prose.com]

Proven

What it’s for: Customized skincare

Proven is the most complex of the customized skincare companies, since it uses a database called the Skin Genome Project to create its products: The SGP crawls 20,238 skincare ingredients, 100,000 products, 8 million testimonials, and over 4,000 scientific journal articles to identify the most effective and favorable results for Proven’s clients. When you complete their extensive skincare profile—which even factors in the water quality of your zip code—a dermo reviews the data and prescribes a 3-product set, including a customized cleanser, moisturizer, and night cream, all of which have ingredients tailored to your various needs. The 2-month supply runs $ 145, but the steeper cost is worth the upgrade if you want the most tailored fit of all.

How to Get Justin Theroux’s Tousled Hair and Beard Style

Our January cover star frequently changes his appearance. Justin Theroux routinely teeters between clean-shaven and bearded, as well as slicked back and intentionally disheveled—with a few bestubbled and tousled stops along the way.

Of all his looks, we know Theroux best for his textured, mussed hair, paired with a neatly manicured beard, full as it can be (as seen in our photo shoot with the actor and screenwriter). There’s toughness to this combo, and versatility. You could mimic it for the office without having to restyle for happy hour. You could match it with a leather jacket for a night out, or a wool blazer for brunch with the in-laws.

The Best Hairstyles for Your Face Shape

If you’re looking to flatter Theroux and mimic the look—and why wouldn’t you?—here’s some advice on how to do it best. All expertise comes from LA-based celebrity groomer Marissa Machado, whose clients include Nick and Joe Jonas, Rami Malek, Liam Payne, and more.

Justin Theroux

The kind of hair it requires

“This hairstyle works best on fine, straighter hair,” says Machado. “Straight, weightless hair is more likely to stay standing up (with the product you apply). A heavier head of hair would wilt over.”

If your hair is wavy or curly, however, fret not: Machado says you could quickly straighten it with a flat iron in order to replicate Theroux. (Try Sedu Revolution Styling Iron.) It’s also suitable if your hair is thinning, since it errs on the side of disheveled and “imperfect”.

“You can use the sides of your hair to push forward, therefore masking a receding hair line,” Machado says. “Plus, thinner hair is usually weightless, which will hold up easily [with the styling product].”

Machado says you can visit either the barber or a stylist for this cut, since it’s halfway between the two spectrums. She just warns that you need to use scissors all around—even on the tighter sides—so don’t let your barber click on their clippers unless it’s to clean up your neckline.

How much they cut will be determined by how much hair you have. You should get some texture cut into the top, which will be significantly longer than the sides. It’s easily replicated on shorter hair too, though you won’t get as much vertical unless the top is a couple inches long, or more.

How to style it

First, Machado says to spray some styling tonic (try V76 by Vaughn Tonic Hair & Scalp) or sea salt spray (try Sachajuan Ocean Mist Spray) into clean, towel-dried (but lightly wet) hair. This will assist with the volume, and make the hair more receptive to the next product you apply.

“Next, blow dry using your fingers for a rough, choppy finish. Make sure to dry the hairs atop the head in an upward direction, using your hand to push the sides forward.” This can cover some of your hair recession. (We like Conair 1875-Watt Pro Styler.)

10 Hairstyles for Men Over 40

Dry with the cannon in a forward direction, not blowing from the sides, Machado adds. After it’s dry and in place, grab some matte pomade (like Byrd Matte Pomade). A penny-sized amount should suffice.

“Make sure to get it into the root and evenly around,” Machado says. “Use your hands to perfect the shape. Once you’ve done that, lock it in place with a light setting spray.”

The spray won’t make hair brittle and hard, but it will preserve your style for the day.

How to maintain the beard

“Keeping a beard this length—clean but burly—is actually more work than it looks like,” Machado warns.

It’s manageable, even though you’ll need to trim it every two days, on average.

First: “Always keep your face clean above the beard line, using a regular shaving razor (such as Harry’s The Winston) or even a straight blade (like Baxter of California Blue Steel “Not a Replica” Straight Razor) at the barbershop,” she says. “This also goes for your neckline.”

The 10 Best Hairstyles for Men That Will Never Go Out of Style

As for preserving the beard shape, Machado recommends combing it into place, then using a standard beard trimmer (try Wahl Beard Cord / Cordless Rechargeable Trimmer) to graze any stray hairs. You can also employ some small, precise facial hair scissors (like Tweezerman Stainless Steel Moustache Scissors) for the task. She then advises using beard oil (like Old Spice Beard Oil)  to keep your whiskers hydrated, soft, and with a healthy dose of shine.

How to Get Milo Ventimiglia’s Hair (and Mustache) From ‘This Is Us’

This Is Us is a tearjerker, almost entirely because Milo Ventimiglia’s hair just looks that damn good. (A roster of great actors helps, too.) We put Ventimiglia front and center on our November cover, a bit cleaned up by comparison to his small-screen persona—but no less rakish.

Wondering how you can replicate his long locks for yourself? We got some pointers from Justin Virgil Gramelspacher, master barber at Blind Barber in New York City. (You can find him at the East Village and Moxy Times Square locations.) Here’s what Gramelspacher taught us about Ventimiglia’s hair, and, as an added bonus, about his equally renowned mustache, too.

Milo Ventimiglia
Beau Grealy

The Kind of Hair You Need

You need to have moderately curly, wavy, or straight hair if you want to replicate this style (though the result will vary from one guy to the next), Gramelspacher says.

“It’ll need to be cut and styled based on your individual texture and density,” he says.

How Milo Ventimiglia Keeps His Cool

If you’re receding at all, don’t shy away from the look, either: He says that Ventimiglia’s cut works well on both a full or receded hairline.

What Kind of Regimen Does it Require?

You need to get yourself in a barber’s chair every 6-8 weeks in order to properly texturize the hair and reduce any bulk, Gramelspacher says. That seems counterproductive, but if you don’t clean it up as it grows, then you’ll suffer through a year of growth (and awkward hairstyles) until you reach the promised land.

He advises shampooing three times a week—no more, no less—before bed if it gets too dried out after a wash. (“This allows some of your natural oils to return overnight and your hair will be easier to tame in the morning.“)

Always follow a shampoo with conditioner to restore nutrients and softness to your hair after a drying wash. We’re fans of Blind Barber’s shampoo and conditioner.

How to Do You Style It?

“Long hair has to move but you still want it to hold a shape,” Gramelspacher says.

That means you want to avoid sticky or greasy hair products with high hold.

“For a low-commitment approach, comb sea salt spray (Verb Products Sea Spray) or clean-hold gel (Kiehl’s Grooming Solutions Clean Hold Styling Gel) through towel dried hair to set the shape, and let it air dry. Once the hair has dried, run your hands through it repeatedly to break up the stiff bonds that form. Don’t worry, the product will still be there, doing its job invisibly. Follow up with styling cream (V76 Grooming Cream Ultralight Hold) to give weight, nourishment, and separation to the hair.”

If you have thin or thinning hair, you should consider using a blow dryer (after the gel or salt spray, but before the styling cream). Gramelspacher says this is an effective way to increase density and volume.

And if you have curly hair: “Work a generous amount of anti-frizz cream (Living Proof NourishingStyling Cream) through towel-dried hair, and blow dry to activate and relax the curl for a wavier look.”

How to Transition This Cleaned-up Look Into a Grittier Style (like Ventimiglia’s character on This Is Us)

This style is kind of the longest it can be before things look a little too gritty. That being said, you can still grow it longer, but it’s advised that you continue seeing your stylist every 2 months to texturize the hair and clean up the ends—even if you want to look a little less refined. (Again, the goal isn’t to feel awkward during growth.)

Watch Milo Ventimiglia Show Off His Disney Trivia Knowledge

How to Replicate Milo’s Mustache

Mustache maintenance is pretty DIY.

“Use an electric trimmer with a number 1 or 2 guard and rake downward, with the grain, along the mustache,” Gramelspacher says. “Repeat until the bulk is even and smooth to the face. Remove the guard and use the bare blade to trim any stray hairs that extend from the bulk along the lip line.”

In this case, less is more.

Big Balding Breakthrough: This New Wearable Regrows Hair on Mice

Some guys embrace baldness like a badge of honor. In fact, for guys like The Rock, Jason Statham, and Vin Diesel, their hairless heads are a hallmark of their personas. But for some guys, balding is just plain dreadful.

Well, new research, published in ACS Nano, may provide some comfort. Researchers believe they can regrow hair with a photostimulator.

In the study, done on mice, scientists created a wearable device made of 900 red micro-light-emitting diodes. They shaved the mice’s backs, then placed the patch—about the size of a small postage stamp—on their skin. The device is roughly 1,000 times less powerful per unit area than a traditional phototherapeutic laser, so it didn’t heat up enough to hurt or burn skin.

7 Biggest Grooming Mistakes Balding Men Make

Ultimately mice that wore the patch for 15 minutes a day for 20 days had significantly faster hair growth, long hairs, and a wider regrowth area than mice who were receiving minoxidil injections or nothing at all.

10 Myths and Facts about Hair Loss

Time will tell if this can be a viable option for humans. But the results are certainly promising.

5 Ways to Get Thicker, Fuller Hair

First things first: It’s nearly impossible to thicken your hair at the root itself unless you medically intervene with supplements or injections. But that’s not what this article is about .It’s about how to make your hair look and feel fuller—to maximize the follicles you’re already working with, and to be all the more confident when you head out into the world with each passing year.

Because the truth is every single one of us will lose hair to some extent—some quicker and to a greater degree than others—but if you act quickly and get a little crafty no one will be the wiser.

It mostly comes down to using the right hair products, and some minor dietary fixes, says Los Angeles-based celebrity groomer, KC Fee.

These are her tips for getting a fuller head of hair.

How to Find Your Hair Type and Manage It

1. Switch to a Milder Shampoo

Hopefully you already know that too much shampoo is bad for your hair. It strips all the good oils along with the bad, drying it out and making it hard to style. However, sometimes that’s the tradeoff if you actually want your hair to look fuller: When it’s parched, it stands up more and looks thicker. So, since you might be shampooing more frequently in order to get this effect, Fee suggests switching to one that’s engineered to be less harsh on your strands. It’ll still lift the hair since it removes the oil at the root, but it’ll dry the actual hair out less in the process, by preserving its natural oils.

She prefers Christophe Robin Men’s Cleansing Thickening Paste for her clients.

“It gives hair volume and a thicker feel,” Fee says.

2. Use Light, Dry Products

“When it comes to thinning hair, you don’t want to use heavy, greasy products that’ll weigh the hair down,” says Fee. “It will cause separation that only accentuates the hair loss.”

She’s referring to things like standard shiny pomade. Instead you want something with a matte finish that lifts the hair. She uses Kevin Murphy Rough Rider Clay Pomade (note that it’s not a “traditional greasy pomade—sometimes the word ‘pomade’ is used interchangeably with ‘hair product’), or a texturizing spray like Oribe’s, which kind of works like a dry shampoo to soak excess oils and add some lift.

“Both are light and dry products that give volume and texture,” says Fee. “A good rule of thumb is to start with a little product and build as needed.”

7 Biggest Grooming Mistakes Balding Men Make

3. Use a Round Brush (and a Hair Dryer)

You probably know that a brush isn’t the best styling device for short hair. It’s used to evenly distribute natural oils to the ends of longer hairs. So, while you keep a comb nearby for your styling needs, there is one brush you should have on-hand: a small, rounded one, like the 3/4″ brush from Spornette. If you use a cream styler, like Baxter of California’s Hard Cream Pomade, apply a small amount to clean, towel-dried hair, then use the brush with a hair dryer (a cheap, simple Conair hair dryer will do) to lift the hair and dry the product at the root, Fee says.

“It gives the hair volume and a thicker look,” she adds.

4. Follow These Dieting Principles

“Diet and supplements can be very helpful in strengthening hair and prolonging the inevitable, as hair loss comes down to genetics,” Fee says.

You can take a proactive approach to hair loss, aside from pills and procedures, by focusing on your diet.

“It can be as easy as eating a clean diet—no sugar or processed foods—and one high in antioxidants,” she says. “Or you can take supplements that include biotin, zinc, vitamin C, iron, and niacin—such as Viviscal daily hair growth supplements.”

How to Handle Going Bald

5. Opt for Hair fibers—Hollywood’s Big Grooming Secret

We asked Fee for the “Hollywood secret” to making hair look thicker—something beyond these everyday salon tips.

Her answer was a bit of a shock: It’s hair fibers—like those sprinkle-on powders guys use to cover their bald spots.

“You’d be surprised to know how many men being photographed or in films and on TV use this trick,” she says. “There’s absolutely no shame in it. And it works! I use Toppik Hair Fiber. It comes in every shade in a shake bottle. You can either shake it in to cover bigger areas, such as the top or back of the head, or it has a pump nozzle you can buy separately to use for a more precise application along the hairline.”

If you aren’t balding but simply want to make your hair look thicker and fuller, this could be the solution. Just don’t touch the hair much once it’s applied, and shampoo thoroughly before resting it on any pillows.

Liquid Gold: 9 Oils That’ll Transform Your Skin, Hair, and Beard

Most guys’ grooming regimen revolves around lotions, creams, and pastes. These heavier products help tame hair, nourish skin, and leave you looking and feeling more youthful. However, there’s a lighter product with more potent benefits—one you’ve definitely been overlooking: oils.

Yes, oil. It’s often an ingredient in these lotions and creams, but on its own, oil soaks into your skin more quickly and seamlessly to deliver nutrients, strengthen cells, preserve moisture, and restore brightness (to your hair’s luster or your skin’s overall complexion). And it often does this without leaving behind an oily residue, as you might otherwise suspect.

From beard softeners to odor neutralizers, we rounded up nine different types of grooming oils for your body, featuring our favorite product in each field. One thing you’ll notice is that many of these oils can be used for multiple benefits—if something is nourishing for your face, it’s likely also good for your hair. That’s not always the case, though, so consult with the packaging (i.e. don’t gargle anything but a designated mouth rinse.)

The Best Unisex Grooming Products You Should Add to Your Routine

Hair Oil

Soybean, meadowfoam, and sunflower oils give Aveda’s Men Pure-Formance Composition Oil its nourishing powers. Use it to calm scalp irritation or dryness, or drop it in your hair styler for an added touch of shine. It’s also effective for taming flyaways on longer styles, and doubles as a leave-in hair conditioner since these oils both hydrate and fortify.

Bath Oil

Drop a capful of Susanne Kaufmann’s Bath Oil for the Senses into a warm bath, and it’ll soothe your muscles while conditioning your skin. I like it best in the winter, when my poor feet have been contained in their boots all day. It’s a DIY spa treatment, thanks to ylang ylang, lavender, and patchouli oils.

Shave Oil

I love when Lab Series’ 3-in-1 Grooming Oil settles and showcases its three main ingredients in a tricolor display: sea buckthorn oil, jojoba oil, and sweet almond oil. Together, they serve three purposes—a pre-shave skin prep, a transparent blade-shielding shave agent, and a whisker-softening beard oil.

[$ 35; labseries.com]

Fragrance Oil

Thé Noir 29 from Le Labo combines bergamot, fig, and bay leaves with cedarwood, musk, and vetiver for a scent that vacillates between vigorous and vibrant. Even though it’s an oil, the fragrance works exactly like any other fragrance: Apply it to your pulse points or into your hair and beard for maximum wear. Only this is one you drop on, instead of spraying, and it’s much more concentrated than the spritzing varieties.

[$ 147; lelabofragrances.com

Face Oil

Golden Door’s Golden Face Oil is somewhere between serum and moisturizer. It softens and fortifies the skin while minimizing signs of aging—such as fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. It combines rose hip oil, sea buckthorn oil, and a blend of 10 essential oils that can brighten your complexion, stimulate collagen production, and shield your skin against harmful toxins.

[$ 60; goldendoor.com

Body Oil

Jao’s full-body hydrator, Goe Oil, is a little more solid than other oils—it’s like a jelly that melts like butter into the skin. “Lighter than a typical body butter, longer lasting than a moisturizer”, the brand touts. The main ingredient is jojoba oil, though, in all, it combines 28 plant, fruit, and flower oils and butters. I love applying it after a hot shower or bath, right before I crawl into bed.

[$ 49; jaobrand.com]

Groin Oil

“Groin oil” sounds weird, but that’s effectively what Fur’s eponymous Fur Oil is: an anti-septic, anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory oil that can be used just about everywhere on the body. Specifically, though, it’s formulated to neutralize odors, soften hairs, and nourish the skin beneath any patch of fuzz—namely your pubes. But it’s also good for the underarms, too.

[$ 44; furyou.com]

Oral Oil

Boka blends organic oils from coconut, spearmint, and peppermint with something called nano-hydroxyapatite (which helps strengthen teeth and bones) in their Cocorinse oral oil. Together they help whiten your smile, freshen your breath, and minimize sensitivity. Swish a packet each day after you brush; it’s like taking a daily vitamin for your mouth.

Safaree Clarifies His $12K Hairline Jig, Tyga Bigs Up His Hair Transplant Surgeon

2018 BET Awards - Arrivals

Source: Earl Gibson III / Getty

Today (August 14) was a day Safaree Samuels will not soon forget. The reality star got into a vicious Twitter argument with his ex, Nicki Minaj, and the collateral damage included Tyga and the exposure of their hair transplant surgery.

Nicki mentioned she paid 10 racks (damn!) for Safaree to get his receding hairline back in order, and also mentioned Tyga got the same surgery.

While Tyga is notorious for not paying his bills, that man had nothing to do with this.

Safaree addressed the reveal in one of his later tweets.

He tweeted, “1st off Me and tyga didn’t go to the same dr. We did it the same day. Diff doctors . Listen I don’t know if this has to do with 1st week sales but you need to finish your zen. And don’t talk about vh1 checks cuz the way you’re acting it’s like your auditioning to be on LHH.”

A bit later, he also mentioned that the hairline was actually $ 12K.

Bruh…

As for Tyga, he took the time to big up his hair transplant surgeon. Bruh!!!

Could you tell Tyga’s hairline was the jig or nah?

Amber Rose Believes “Becky With The Good Hair” Is Gwyneth Paltrow

Source: Axelle/Bauer-Griffin / Getty

Beyoncé put the reported struggles of her marriage with Jay-Z on full blast on the track “Sorry” from her album Lemonade, and there has been heavy speculation on who “Becky with the good hair” was for years. During a recent interview, Amber Rose believes actress Gwyneth Paltrow is the mystery woman in question although she’s clear to mention that it’s all guesswork.

Variety reports:

Speaking to former “Hills” cast members Spencer and Heidi Pratt on an episode of their podcast “Make Speidi Famous Again,” Rose made the revelation. The lyrics to the song include the lines: “They sneaking out the back door / He only want me when I’m not there / He better call Becky with the good hair.”

“I definitely think that Gwyneth Paltrow is ‘Becky with the good hair,’” Rose said. “I really feel like she’s she’s the one who was, like, f—ing Jay-Z.”

While speculative, Rose had her theory: She referenced Paltrow and Beyonce’s public friendship, noting how the two aren’t seen together very often anymore. She said the timing makes sense as well, as “Sorry” came out shortly after the Goop CEO filed for divorce from her former husband, Coldplay singer Chris Martin.

“They were like friends, and then, like, you don’t see Gwyneth Paltrow with Beyonce anymore,” Rose said. “But Beyonce’s still with Jay.”

Well, isn’t that interesting?

Paltrow is still on the cancel watch list for her wanton use of the n-word back in 2012, and with the actress showing that kind of comfort in using the term might only fuel Rose’s theory to some observers. Stay tuned.

Grooming rules for men with thinning hair

For most men (and plenty of women), hair is a source of pride—but it’s a finite one. We must come to terms with the fact that, as we age, this pride source thins, recedes, falls out, and sometimes vanishes completely.

A Better Way to Trim Nose and Ear Hair

Hair grows in funky places, and in summer, that growth seems to be more evident than ever. You could try (and struggle in vain) to remove nose, ear, or eyebrow tresses with tweezers. You could also try to accomplish this feat with your beard trimmer (a stinging, painful mess where bloody spotting will likely ensue). You could also screw up your beard trimmer and handsome face trying to pull it off with the improper tool.

Can we talk about nose hair for a minute? Because every summer, those suckers seem to sprout like they’re on steroids, taking over your nostrils like weeds in a garden. Sure, genetics plays a role in determining who gets the full-on troll look. But most guys are resigned to an adulthood, or at least a season, of awkward hairiness in embarrassing places — for which they should seek the easiest, quickest, most effective, and least painful device for removing.

4 Dry Shampoos That Will Help You Have a Better Hair Day

Dry shampoo’s main function is soaking up oil and grease, making it a must when there’s no time for a proper shower. But it holds a styling secret, too. “Dry shampoo helps conceal dirty hair while giving the appearance of more volume,” says Jordan Blackmore, co-founder of S.Oil  and Three Squares Studio in New York City. Dry shampoo’s plumping effect makes the stuff perfect for guys with thinning or fine hair, Blackmore says. “If you use a blow-dryer first, you can achieve the appearance of even more thickness,” Blackmore adds. Use somewhat sparingly, however; experts say you should still lather up about four times a week for hair and scalp health.

Janelle Monae’s Paris Fashion Week Hair Owns Our Best Beauty List

Paris Fashion Week Spring 2016 was filled with major moments, including the scenic airport-themed Chanel show to the mini “Game of Thrones” reunion with Emilia Clarke and Jason Momoa. But we believe Janelle Monae’s many, many hairstyles stole the spotlight.

The “Yoga” singer was spotted out and about wearing different hairdos to accentuate what she described to Vogue as her “growing, evolving” style. Having worked with Monae since her debut studio album “The ArchAndroid” in 2010, celebrity hairstylist Caprice Green told The Huffington Post that the two always “start out with some sort of game plan” when discussing hairstyle for Fashion Week. “However, it doesn’t always go as planned,” said Green. “The clothes from the designers sort of determined the look each day.”

From her signature pompadour topped with a cherry-red Kristina Dragomir heart cap to a beautiful beehive adorned with Chanel accessories, Monae and her hairstylist have pushed the boundaries on what’s considered to be “natural hair.”

Scroll down to see Monae’s hairstyles from Paris Fashion Week and to learn what Green considered when creating each look.

Awesome Dad Teaches Fellow Fathers How To Do Their Daughters’ Hair

Philippe Morgese knows a thing or two when it comes to styling his daughter’s hair. Now, he’s sharing his skills with other dads.

According to BuzzFeed News, the single dad started out using just simple barrettes with his daughter, Emma. Then, he polished his skills to learn how to do pigtails and even complex braids. Morgese became such an expert that he won a contest started by fellow hair-styling dad Greg Wickherst.

He got so many compliments and even requests for advice from fellow dads that he started a class to teach fathers how to do their daughters’ hair. The free class, which was held at the International Academy in South Daytona, Fla., on Oct. 6, provided tutorials from brushing the girls’ hair to learning how to do braids and buns. The dads also received goody bags with supplies so they can continue their hair-styling journeys.

Morgese shared photos from the class on Reddit on Oct. 7. So far, the photos have been viewed more than 2 million times.

The class was such a success that Morgese started the Daddy Daughter Hair Factory Facebook page to share updates. In a post on the page, the dad wrote that the commitment from the fathers in the class was “admirable.” “I’m so proud of you guys,” he wrote.

Morgese also told BuzzFeed News he plans on having more classes in the future. So get ready, dads. We have a feeling spots will go fast.

Here’s Why Some Men’s Beards Are A Different Color Than Their Hair

Judging by what’s on the Internet, we understand why it might seem like every single guy in the world has either a beard on his face or a bun on his head (we’ve certainly given our fair share of coverage to this important subject of our time).

So with all this hair flying around, we were reminded of one of life’s great mysteries: Why are some guys’ beards a different color than the rest of their hair?

We turned to dermatologist Dr. Bobby Buka, founder of Greenwich Village Dermatology in New York, who said it basically comes down to pigments and genetics.

“The difference between red hair and blonde hair or brown hair is different types of melanin,” Buka said, referring to the pigment packs that bring color to our hair (without it, our hair is white).

One type of melanin, a very light type called pheomelanin, is responsible for blonde or red hair, and eumelanin is the darker melanin found in darker-toned hair. How it gets distributed through the shaft of each hair and in what combinations is what determins our hair color, and it can vary by each individual follicle.

“The other component that contributes to color is the distribution of the melanin from the base of the hair follicle to the rest of the shaft,” Buka said. “That transfer process is genetic, and so redheads have more pheomelanin and their pigment stays at the base of the hair follicle, and black-haired people have more eumelanin and transfers throughout the shaft.”

The same goes for each follicle on your head, so those around your jaw and neck might have a different eumelanin-to-pheomelanin ratio than say, what’s on the top of your head.

For what it’s worth, our skin has pigments to protect ourselves from ultraviolet rays, but Buka pointed out that our hair doesn’t need UV protection. So why is there a biological reason that our hair would have pigments? “I can’t see why we would have one,” he said.

It seems some mysteries still need to be solved.

Military Denies Chelsea Manning Permission To Grow Hair Out

Military officials on Friday denied the request of Army whistleblower Chelsea Manning to grow her hair in accordance with female grooming standards.

The former intelligence analyst is serving a 35-year sentence at the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, for providing sensitive documents related to the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to WikiLeaks — actions her supporters say may have helped end the war in Iraq.

Manning, who was assigned male at birth but identifies as a woman, was diagnosed with gender dysphoria in 2010. In 2014, the American Civil Liberties Union requested that the Department of Defense provide Manning with clinically recommended treatment, including hormone therapy, access to a qualified medical provider and permission to follow female grooming standards, according to an ACLU statement.

Manning said in a Friday tweet that she intended to fight the decision. She is able to use Twitter in prison by speaking with third parties, who transcribe her words and tweet on her behalf.

The military already agreed to allow Manning access to hormone therapy, speech therapy and cosmetics, but ruled Friday that she must cut her hair in accordance with male standards.

“Even though the military agrees that allowing Chelsea to grow her hair is a critical part of her treatment plan, they continue to deny her basic human and constitutional rights,” ACLU attorney Chase Strangio said in the statement. “When we filed our lawsuit a year ago, Chelsea had already waited more than a year for even minimal care to treat her gender dysphoria.”

Manning described her life in a men’s correctional facility in an April Cosmopolitan interview, where she noted that not being able to let her hair grow longer is “painful and awkward.”

In August, Manning faced indefinite solitary confinement over the infractions of sweeping food on the ground, possessing “prohibited” reading material — including Vanity Fair and the Cosmopolitan issue that featured her own interview — and having a tube of expired toothpaste.

Instead, she ultimately lost recreation privileges for 21 days. Strangio noted at the time, however, that the convictions would also show up at any parole or clemency hearings, and would force Manning to remain at a higher-security facility for a longer period of time.

Is the Twisted Ponytail the New Topknot? Why J.W.Anderson’s Runway Hair Is a Hit

jw anderson hair braid

Cutting a clean line down the back of J.W.Anderson’s graphic black bralettes, mutton-sleeve tops, and Keith Haring–esque Pop Art prints on the runway earlier today, models’ spear-like twisted ponytails felt like sleek contradiction—well, almost. After all, the British designer’s fleet of It girl fans do tend to favor deceptively simple hair that lets their fashion do the heavy lifting, with an emphasis on urban cool.

Backstage, hairstylist Anthony Turner created a look that was slick, graphic, and low-maintenance by scraping the hair back into a slick ponytail, then separating the lengths into two even sections and twisting them around each other like a helix before fastening them with a band at the ends. If you’ve been mulling over fresh alternatives to air-dried waves or the now-ubiquitous topknot this season, congratulations—this is your look.

Ciara Cuts Her Hair! The Singer Debuts a Bold New Crop at the MTV VMA Awards

Photo: Getty Images

After months of championing swingy lengths of hip-grazing hair, Ciara shocked the red carpet at tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards by debuting a dramatically abbreviated new crop. Making a slick counterpart to her black fringed dress, the singer’s obsidian bob fell bluntly along her collarbone. Flat ironed to perfection and giving off a reflective mirror-like sheen, the effect was amplified by her luminous complexion, deep smoky cat eye, and cheekbone-sharpening contouring. Short hair for fall? Just another reason Ciara is the ultimate beauty rule breaker.

Girl Gang Hair at the VMA Awards: Are You on Team Sleek or Team Wavy?

cruly straight hair vmas

As Taylor Swifts “Bad Blood” posse took to the multicolored carpet at the 2015 VMAs, we noticed that her girl gang of friends had taken sides—with hair that was either ironed to slick straight perfection, or left to fall in softly cascading natural waves. Swift, who pulled her darkened blonde mane into a low, tight ponytail, was joined by equally sleek pals Hailee Steinfeld, Gigi Hadid, and Serayah McNeill; nearby, an opposing camp of beauties including Lily Aldridge, Karlie Kloss, Cara Delevingne, and Martha Hunt opted for laid-back, tousled lengths with a hint of soft bend.

And the phenomenon didn’t stop there. As the night went on, the red carpet’s biggest names fell into equally diverging aesthetic camps, with Nicki Minaj, Rita Ora, and Ciara standing in glassy, poker-straight contrast to bohemian-minded beauties like Emily Ratajkowski. Here, the VMA attendees who made a case for the straight vs. wavy debate.

Trend Alert! Hair Accessories for Fall 2015

Accessories are a big thing for any outfit, with the potential to make or break a look or ensemble. While jewelry and gloves, bags and purses and everything in between might be quite necessary, few of us ever really stop to think about hair accessories.

You may have spent a whole lot of time primping and styling your locks but you have left it lacking some extra embellishment that could completely alter your appearance. This is unfortunate considering the many ways you could add to your ‘do and make it look that much more glamorous and unique.

Simple things really can make a whole world of difference, whether it is a clip or a bandana, a hat or a pin. You can get creative, fill it up to the tee or just let it be — a simple look that appears intriguing to say the least.

Recently, designers have presented us with some of the most decadent hair ornaments for the upcoming 2015-2016 fall/winter season. These ultra glam pieces will inspire you to add a touch of sparkle and glam to your tresses during the colder months.

If the fall 2015 designer collections are any indication, when it comes to your hair next season, you are going to want to put a bow on it — or a ribbon, or a pretty jeweled clip, or a graphic oversized barrette, or possibly even a brooch plucked from your jewelry box as the case may be.

Geometric clips (Suno), jeweled accents (Prada, Dolce & Gabbana), and slim monochromatic pieces (Rochas) offer plenty of alternatives for accessorizing even the simplest of styles and look that much better pinned into easy, imperfectly done hair.

Here, a look back at a few of our favorite fresh ideas, which we plan on putting into action, pronto.

Headbands

The stylists at Chanel dominated the fashion week runways with their chunky black satin headbands that pulled the hair back away from the face and added a dainty and feminine touch.

Although silk and satin headbands always appear chic, new textured bands such as leather or jewel-encrusted ones are also all the rage. Proenza Schouler showcased sleek leather headbands as well as some adorned with sparkles and added bands in thin strips.

Colored bands such as the orange elastic headbands worn at the Fendi show looked bright and refreshing and did a stylish job at keeping stray tendrils away from the face while bringing the focus towards the forehead region and the eyes.

Girly pink headbands from Honor were the perfect no-fuss accessories, adding to a woman’s femininity. At Gucci we saw white floral headbands placed atop blonde hair with pink edges, looking oh-so-beautiful and positively unique.

Dainty Bows

While the spring and summer seasons were full of huge bows, the fall and winter seasons have seen smaller, jeweled bows instead and certainly not as often. They appeared in multiple pieces on a single model’s head at Dolce & Gabbana, appearing to be a lovely combination of sweet and delicate as well as youthful with a mature outlook.

Pretty little bows were added to the ends of the braids at the Giles show as well, in soft satin and looking positively gorgeous against the platinum blonde of the hair. At Delpozo, onlookers were treated to the sight of oversized bow headbands that we just might grab in those pasty pink colors.

Jeweled Clips and Barrettes

Jewels in your hair may not be something you would normally go for, but they can appear to be quite lovely. Plus, they add bling to any ‘do, sprucing up any outfit just through the presence of something sparkling on your head.

That’s where the jeweled accents seen at Prada or even Dolce & Gabbana come in, from the colorful designs of the former keeping the hair looped to the side in place with those incredible barrettes to the gorgeous golden ribbon enamel and jewel encrusted roses of the latter.

The best looks, though, seemed to be the Chanel strike-through hair pins that went perfectly with the satin headbands while effectively adding retro to futuristic looks and keeping us with eyes trained on the runway, demanding more and more despite the fashion house’s elaborate and long collection for the fall and winter seasons of this year.

Head Scarves

While they were certainly not a common sight, headscarves and such headwear, such as the Agnes B tulle headwear and the Dolce & Gabbana options, were extremely intriguing and looked rather sweet tied in with the ponytails and updos.

Headscarves were tied on at Delpozo as well, coming in pastel pinks and navy blues and encompassing the whole of the head in a look that appears to be chic and Gypsy like.

The Chameleons of Summer: How a Dramatic Hair Transformation Became the Season’s Secret Weapon

georgia may jagger instagram

As summer prepares to make its slow, sunset-like descent into autumn, a quick look back at our favorite metamorphic beauty moments confirms that it was the season of the fearless hair change. Dramatic chops and color adjustments inspired us—while constantly keeping us guessing—and promised to provide a template for our own adventurous shifts going into September.

Case in point: Georgia May Jagger bleached her layered lengths before saturating sections in playfully bright pastels, resulting in a physical representation of summertime whimsy that will segue nicely into the washed-out shades of blush, lavender, and tangerine as the temperature dips. Meanwhile, Lupita Nyong’o proved that changing one’s hair can be done easily and often, morphing from short-haired siren into side-braid bohemian and back, this time with a headful of natural curls that we can’t help but mentally pair with a chunky knit sweater.

While many embraced the long, swingy lengths typically associated with beach bombshell season, hairstylist Orlando Pita snipped Amanda Seyfrieds signature wheat-colored mane into a shoulder-grazing, polished bob, and for a good cause—Seyfried donated her shorn lengths to Locks for Love. Also going against the grain: Poppy Delevingne, who lightened her honey-colored hair to an icy, Nordic blonde shade that seems rife for emulation.

But perhaps our favorite dramatic reveals arrived courtesy of Jennifer Hudson—whose ultra-short style only enhances her striking, pronounced features—and Greta Gerwig, who traded her shoulder-sweeping waves for a chin-length crop that she continued to braid, straighten, and slick back to transformative effect. Above, five summertime hair moments to inspire a seasonal reimagining of the mane.

No Hair, Don’t Care: Fashion’s Freshest Faces Are Embracing the Buzz Cut

shaved head models ruth bell

Shockwaves went through the fashion industry in the early nineties when Eve Salvail first appeared on the runway with a shaved head, her head bare save for a curled dragon tattooed on her scalp. Her hair, or lack thereof, stood in direct contrast with the lengthy, ultrafeminine locks of the era’s supermodels—think Christy, Cindy, Naomi, Stephanie, and long, swingy sheets of hair. Two decades later and long hair is still the default for new models, whose agents praise its versatility: With fashion shows and editorials requiring models to be quick-change artists, longer hair can more easily lend itself to the required transformations. As a result, agencies have historically preferred that models play it safe. But the current fixation on models with “personality” has given rise to a set of beauties who follow in the footsteps of trailblazers like Salvail. African models like Grace Bol, Herieth Paul, and Ajak Deng have been wearing their hair super short for years, but only recently have their peers followed suit. Rising stars Tamy Glauser, Ruth Bell, and Kris Gottschalk have all embraced the buzz cut—and seen their careers skyrocket as a result.

Close-cropped hair has long been a signifier of punk rebellion and offbeat cool, so it’s fitting that designers who understand the importance of carefully curated edge have sought the models who dare to shear: Glauser is a regular at Rick Owens and on Nicolas Ghesquières runway for Louis Vuitton, while Gottschalk was tapped to model alongside the boys at Public School’s show at men’s New York Fashion Week, and Bell cut her chest-length strawberry blonde hair to front the latest campaign for Alexander McQueen. As it turns out, having a shaved head has become something of a savvy career move: It not only attracts cooler clients, it also serves to set a model apart from the hundreds of other girls on the scene. “There are hardly any other models with a shaved head,” says Gottschalk. “It’s interesting because other girls don’t really see me as competition—I don’t get those sideways glances at castings.”

Bell’s newly shorn hair also helps to differentiate her from her twin and fellow model, May. Born and raised in Kent, England, the sisters began their fashion careers together often photographed as a pair—they even share an Instagram account. Since her pixieish Paul Hanlon buzz cut, Bell has been carving out a niche for herself, working with the likes of David Sims and Lachlan Bailey and, yes, forming her own social media account—one filled with shots of her as a moody, punkish gamine, rather than the more traditional, whimsical images that fill the account she and her sister share.

Glauser, likely one of the originators of the current buzzed-off trend, got her fade from a friend. “I had been talking about wanting to cut my hair forever, but I was too scared,” admits Glauser. “One day my friend just picked up scissors and cut my hair right down the middle—there was no going back.” Over time the look became Glauser’s signature: Occasionally the color will change—earlier this month she debuted a platinum hue—but the length rarely varies. Though she’s benefited from her now-trademark daring do, Glauser cautions those attempting to emulate it. “[Shaving your head] is a risk, you never really know how it will look until that moment of truth.” Still, the model has no plans to revert to her old style. “It just feels too amazing short—I might let it grow a centimeter, then it’s time to shave again!”

Lots of Beautiful Hair at Teen Choice, Some With Splash of Color

Teen Choice delivered! Rita Ora added a light breeze of pink to her signature platinum blonde tresses and Britney Spears, honored as a style icon, splashed her ends with blue and purple to create what might even be described as an ombre.

All the stars collecting awards in Los Angeles for best movies, acting and music were, of course, beautiful. Most of them stuck with recent trends of natural looking cuts and colors with subtle, soft color transitions. We didn’t really see any big departures from what’s been popular.

Winning an award as a TV comedy actress, “Glee” star Lea Michele stayed with her long layers and caramel highlights. What can you say? It works!

Teen Choice for best TV drama went to the cast of “Pretty Little Liars.” Accepting the award were cast stars including Lucy Hale, who does a lot of long brown layered wavy hair, recently went short with a bob, but then had extensions to do a long ponytail in a cool, slick-back look to accept her award with other cast members. Also going with a center part and slick-back look from the “Pretty Little Liars” cast were Janel Parrish and Shay Mitchell.

Actress and singer Zendaya (star of Disney’s “Undercover KC”) went with a ballerina bun high on top to walk the Teen Choice blue carpet. She changes the style of her dark, brown hair often, and the results are nearly always fantastic.

So, no new trends emerged but we saw lots of beautiful hair. Love those kids! Love change!

Just in Time for New School Year, Teen Choice to Set Hair Trends

You can already hear the high-pitched squeals! Teen Choice Awards are this weekend and we’re sure to see a train of beautiful trend-setting hair for a massive audience of eager young fashion mavens heading back to school.

Here are just a handful of the nominees. I loved their hair styles and can’t wait to see what these and other celebs bring to the red carpets leading into the Galen Center in Los Angeles on Sunday.

If there is one word to describe the “look” we’ve seen recently among the truly young and restless teens it is “variety” — cuts and color all over the place, but with lots of tailored individuality. Lea Michele is a perfect example. Nominated for a Teen Choice Award as a TV comedy actress, this Glee star has been wearing her hair in long layers with caramel highlights and soft bangs that draw attention to her distinctive eyes.

Lucy Hale does a lot of long brown layered wavy hair, and for good reason. She looks fantastic. She’s also done a ponytail with a deep side part and soft, face-framing waves, another great look for her. Incredibly talented Hale is nominated for a Teen Choice Award for her work in Pretty Little Liars as a TV actress in the drama/action adventure category.

Zendaya has done just about everything with her hair, including a layered bob with heavy bangs. Her deep, rich, dark brown color brings out her features beautifully. She’s up for Teen Choice award for TV actress in a comedy for her adorable, heart-throb role in Disney’s KC Undercover.

Can you believe how cool Shailene Woodley looks in a slick-back pixie? She’s nominated for a Teen Choice award for her gripping performance in the blockbuster Insurgent.

Demi Lovato has been wearing a deep side part, giving her hair that great asymmetrical look to frame her beautiful features. She’s been nominated for a Teen Choice female summer music star award. If there is one thing that has been consistent overall it is a trend of soft colors with subtle transitions.

Always, there are exceptions, but even in the new move toward silver hair with vibrant colors, a lot of the transitions are pretty soft and cool, not abrupt. I’m betting, and hoping, we see some color at the Teen Choice Awards Sunday. Maybe a new trend will emerge.

Cheers to the kids! Love change!

4 Ways to Tie Your Hair Up for the Weekend: Behati Prinsloo, Alexa Chung, and More

Amanda Norgaard instagram

Brimming with sunny charm, headscarves are a little bit like straw hats: effortless in theory, but tricky to pull off in real life. But judging by our favorite vacationing Insta beauties, the secret to working an irreverent bow or colorful swath of fabric into your hair comes down to one easy rule: Keep it simple. Behati Prinsloo stayed cool and protected her highlights with a gauzy solid number, and over in Uruguay, model Amanda Norgaard reminded us why Montevideo is known as the St.-Tropez of South America with a wide headband slipped over her salty knot and an Aperol in hand. Meanwhile, a poolside Rihanna found a heat wave–ready accessory in a printed silk scarf that was knotted at the front with her spiraling bangs spilling out, and Alexa Chung dressed up a split-second updo with a cheerful bow. Just in time the weekend, here are four selfie-tested hair upgrades made for a sun-soaked retreat.

2 Steps to Choose a Trendy, Fun Hair Color

I am really loving the trendy and fun hair colors I am seeing all over the place these days. Have you been considering taking the plunge and coloring your tresses with a funky and fun color like pink, grey, purple, blue, orange or green? How do you know which of the fun colors and which intensity of the colors work best with you?

Choosing a fun hair color that doesn’t overpower you is a key ingredient to joining in on the fun hair color trend while giving off your best. If you choose a fun hair color that overpowers you, you could look dull, worn, outdated, odd, unbalanced, and even older.

Here are 2 steps to choose a trendy and fun hair color that works with you to give off a vibrant, healthy, balanced and potentially more youthful glow.

1. Choose hair colors that align with your skin undertone: Hair colors are grouped by undertone in hair color swatch books that you find at hair salons — choose a hair color that matches your skin undertone. If you are unable to do a formal undertone analysis with a trained color analysis professional, ask your hair colorist if he/she can determine by looking at you if you have a cool, warm or a neutral undertone.

For instance, if you have a cool undertone you will want to avoid orange, red, yellow, warm pinks, warm blues and warm green colors in your hair. If you have a warm undertone, you will want to avoid cool pinks, cool blues, most violets, cool grey and cool green colors in your hair.

2. Choose hair colors and intensities that align with your seasonal color palette: The best way to do this is by having a color analysis consultation and/or working with a hair colorist who has significant training and experience identifying what your most optimal hair colors are.

Before taking the fun hair color plunge, I also advise thinking through whether an all-over solid fun color look versus more subtle highlights or subtle painting in of the hair color works best with you and your lifestyle.

To show you a few picture examples of the steps above, I recruited a few of my colleagues at Studio Fontana in Toronto, Canada to participate in this blog.

Silver-Gray Hair Trending Strong, Makes Move From Red Carpet to Streets

The new silver-gray is trending strong this summer and we’re seeing it beautifully accented with vivid colors like green, purple, pink … you name it!

Just when we think we’ve seen it all, we haven’t. We’re coloring our hair gray, and it works! And while most of this has been on the red carpets these colors are moving fast to the streets.

Beware, though, this is a hair color that is extremely difficult to achieve. What we want is a soft, shimmering silver with subtle variations. Try this at home at you may end up with something that looks more like ‘old-age’ gray or Halloween alien gray. So leave the box on the drug store shelf and head for your trusted stylist.

Then have fun. You’re in good company. “Once Upon a Time” star Ginnifer Goodwin just showed up for an appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con in a short pixie with silver hair in the softest most subtle shade of lavender. So beautiful, and that subtlety in the lavender is part of what’s so hard to get. Lady Gaga wore her hair in a silver blend at the Academy Awards in February. She usually does ‘outrageous’ but this style had a beautiful, understated look.

Of course, this isn’t about looking ‘old.’ It doesn’t look old at all. Think about Zosia Mamet of “Mad Men.” She went with a soft silvery gray … with natural brown roots! This is the opposite, literally, of what it means to have gray roots.

It seems this style has been emerging but has finally hit the streets this spring and strongly this summer.

The look lends itself to many variations, and may even be a momentary path of salvation for the ombre, which had dissolved almost to extinction in the last year. With this silver-gray trend, while we’re seeing some very soft, subtle blends with some of the vivid colors, we’re also finding more distinct and striking gradations, like the ones that defined the ombre before that style faded. We’ll see.

Holding ground are the natural colors with very soft, subtle color transitions with natural waves. The bobs are very popular, and this versatile cut works extremely well with these silver-gray blends. I still expect those natural colors to dominate the styles but it is so great to see something really different take hold … it’s been a while!

That’s as good a reason as any to jump on this color style while it’s here. It is so attractive, and distinct but not at all outrageous. As fast as this silvery trend emerged, another may be close by waiting, so ride the wave while it’s strong, because a new one is probably right around the corner.

As always, be open to change!

Fatima Al Qadiri on Her Pitchfork Packing List—and Why Short Hair Is an Act of Rebellion

Fatima Al Qadiri

It’s just days before Fatima Al Qadiri will fly from Berlin to Chicago for the Pitchfork Music Festival, and her excitement over the lineup of surprise guest stars that will join her and the rest of Future Brown on stage is palpable. “Meeting them in person makes the hard work worth it,” she says. What she is not concerned about is packing. The musician, DJ, and visual artist’s summer touring schedule and upcoming exhibitions (Paris’s Musée d’Art Moderne will host a show of her art collective GCC’s work in October), has given her plenty of experience in how to curate a suitcase. Alongside the easy separates from her favorite Japanese designers will be a traveler’s arsenal of skin care and not an ounce of makeup. “I used to wear lipstick, but when I get nervous, I chew my lips—so wearing it onstage, I just ate the lipstick.” Instead, she lets her music and her hair do the talking.

Al Qadiri’s wavy eye-grazing crop, with its tomboyish allure, has seen more than its share of admirers in New York City. But in her home country of Kuwait, it’s viewed as an act of rebellion. “There was a quantum leap between my grandmother’s generation and mine,” says Al Qadiri, who, growing up, felt that certain cultural expressions of femininity, such as the long hair that was traditionally encouraged among Kuwaiti women (“it’s the status quo”) were no longer necessary. “I don’t ever want to put down women for looking how they want to look. [But] I find it just as oppressive to be in a room of women that all have long hair as it is to be the only woman in a room full of men. There’s a very ‘separate lives’ element about it.”

In the same way her early interest in avant-garde labels like Yohji Yamamoto and Margiela provided her with an opportunity to express herself in the face of confining societal notions, Al Quadiri began to explore her identity through her hair and makeup as a teenager. By 1999, she had relocated to the United States to attend Penn State University sporting “a millimeter” of fiery orange hair, a Marilyn Monroe piercing, and blue contacts. “I looked like I was from another planet.” It was the age of the club kid, and inside their Peace Love Unity Respect culture, Al Qadiri found freedom. “[Their look] wasn’t super feminine—it was very androgynous. Men and women wore JNCO jeans. I found the relationships between the sexes extremely liberating.”

Eventually, the contact lenses were removed and the orange hair dye gave way to her natural obsidian, but Al Qadiri has kept her hair short ever since. Today’s incarnation is a nod to the classic French carré—a style that celebrated women’s liberation in the twenties, though Al Qadiri’s just-above-the-ear homage is purely aesthetic. “I always found that fade in the back so attractive as a kid.” First snipped in 2007 by the Lower East Side–based stylist Emiko Watanabe, the musician’s crop and its required upkeep (regular cuts every three weeks) has met its challenges on the road. Constant touring requires sourcing a trustworthy stylist in each new city, and during extended trips to Kuwait, the act of asking for a trim has not proved so simple. She has, on occasion, been criticized on the street for her short length; and, she adds with a laugh, “I get called sir a lot.”

Monthly haircuts aside, her closely shorn waves require minimal effort. “It’s just my hair being itself. I wash it, put wax in it and I’m done.” The time she does spend on getting ready is dedicated almost exclusively to skin care. “[Because I don’t wear makeup,] I want to look as flawless as I can naturally.” For this, she reaches for Peter Thomas Roth’s Rose Stem Cell Bio-Repair cream during the day, and Sarah Chapman’s Skinesis Overnight Facial Oil in the evening. “It smells like every flower on the planet is inside of it, and it makes your skin really soft—you can see the difference. I hate myself [in the morning] if I don’t put it on at night.” For frequent flights, she always carries on a face mist—Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir and May Lindstrom’s The Jasmine Garden are recent favorites—and Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil.

If her involved skin care routine seems at odds with her stance on hair and resistance to elaborate getting-ready rituals, which she refers to as a “colossal waste of time,” Al Qadiri welcomes the contradiction. “There’s always been a battle in me. I’m constantly trying to embrace and reject femininity.” Spoken like an artist who finds beauty in the contrasts.

How To Detangle Your Hair Without Damaging It

If you’re detangling your hair by pulling a fine-toothed comb or paddle brush from the top of your head to the bottom, please stop now. This mistake can lead to split ends and single strand knots, which are nearly impossible to get rid of without cutting them out.

According to Scunci celebrity hairstylist Laura Polko, you detangle hair by always starting from the very bottom and working your way up, like this:

Creme of Nature Education Expert Pat Grant Williams says it is best to prep and soften hair for detangling by applying a few spritzes of water, or a cocktail of conditioner and oil. “The cocktail of conditioner and oil as a lubricant makes the hair more pliable and easier to manage,” she says. “Gently work the conditioner and oil from ends to roots, concentrating on tangles and knots. Remove any hair that sheds during the detangling process.”

This method makes it is easier to detangle knots by working up the hair, which causes less stress on strands and helps to avoid additional tangles.

Both experts agree that the best detangling “tool” are your fingers. “Finger-combing really breaks up the major tangles and you can actually feel with your hands where the tangles are,” says Polko. “Again, be super patient to avoid breaking hair.”

Williams also recommends using a medium-toothed comb for fine to medium textured hair and a wide-toothed comb for thick and coarse hair. “Look for a comb made of hard rubber, which is the best type to use, because they do not split and tear the hair,” she says.

While Williams believes finger-detangling on dry hair that is coated with oil will likely give the best results, hair is easier to detangle when wet. She adds, “The hair structure is made up of 97 percent keratin protein. Hair is the linking together of protein groups. The weakest bond in the hair can be temporarily broken with water. This temporary breakdown of the bonds allows for easier altering of the hair.”

Also, there are products designed to help detangle wet hair. Shop our editors’ picks below for products that will make the process as smooth as possible.
