Martin Lawrence To Be Honored At VH1’s Hip Hop Honors: The 90’s Game Changers

When you think of 90’s Hip-Hop, Martin Lawrence is most definitely a point of discussion. So it should be no surprise that the actor and comedian will be honored at VH1’s forthcoming Hip Hop Honors: The 90’s Game Changers.

Billed as a 90’s style block party, the evening will celebrate the era of Hip-Hop’s influence on Pop culture, television, movies and its albums. The ceremony goes down Sunday, September 17 at Paramount Studios in Hollywood but will air on Monday, September 18 at 9PM ET/PT on VH1.

Last year’s Hip Hop Honors paid homage to females MC’s like Lil Kim, Queen Latifah and Missy Elliott.

Lawrence is just the first announced honoree with more to follow (get more info right here.). The comedian’s impact in the 90’s spanned television (his namesake show), movies (Bad Boys, Big Momma’s House) and stand up (he hosted Def Comedy Jam).

To quote Gang Starr, you gots to give the credit when the credit is due. With that said, let us look back at one of the funniest scenes from Martin, ever (RIP Tommy Ford).

‘Gilmore Girls’ Reunion At ATX Festival Honors Edward Herrmann

The “Gilmore Girls” reunion Saturday started with creator Amy Sherman-Palladino on stage with what she called her “trinity.” Lauren Graham (Lorelai), Alexis Bledel (Rory) and Kelly Bishop (Emily) took the stage to frenzied screams from fans, many of which have been waiting in line outside the Paramount Theater in Austin, Texas, for hours.

But the panel couldn’t really start without mention of Edward Herrmann (Richard), who Sherman-Palladino said was first to join in on the reunion:

Herrmann died on December 31, 2014. An empty chair was added to the stage Saturday night in his honor.

A montage set to the song Richard dedicated to Emily at their wedding anniversary episode (“Wedding Bell Blues“) played in the background:

When asked where she thinks her character, Emily, would be today, Bishop replied:

Wrestler (And Real-Life Superhero) John Cena Honors Young Fan Battling Cancer

John Cena may not have real super powers, but the WWE wrestler is known for his ability to make dreams come true.

Last year, the 38-year-old became the first celebrity to grant 400 wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“I think it boils down to the fact that John connects with children in a really special way,” a spokesperson for Make-A-Wish told Yahoo! News at the time.

On Monday night’s episode of “WWE Raw,” Cena showed off his wish-granting powers yet again when he honored a young wrestling fan who is battling cancer.

Cena, the current WWE United States Champion, was facing off with Kevin Owens when he spotted the youngster in the audience. The child was carrying an “I’m Beating Cancer” sign.

“If I … say the words ‘never give up,’ not only am I telling the truth, I am encouraging young and old, all alike, like that person right there, to do the exact same thing,” Cena said, pointing out the kid.

Later, once the taping of the show was over, the wrestler went into the audience and ushered the youngster into the wrestling ring.

The look of incredulity on the kid’s face says it all.

GLAAD Media Awards 2015 Honors Thomas Roberts, Kelly Ripa And More

By Chris Michaud

NEW YORK, May 9 (Reuters) – MSNBC news anchor Thomas Roberts and talk show host Kelly Ripa were among honorees at GLAAD’s annual media awards on Saturday, which recognize representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

Roberts, 42, who came out as gay in 2006, accepted the group’s Vito Russo Award for promoting equality in the gay community.

The award, named after the activist and film historian who was one of the founding member of media advocacy group GLAAD, was presented to him by Lynda Carter, best known as television’s “Wonder Woman” in the 1970s.

“It was liberating, and frightening as hell,” Roberts said, recalling the period when he became open about being gay.

“People like me were considered immoral at best, a joke,” Roberts said, noting that while things had improved for gay people, “we have a long way to go.”

Past winners of the award include Suze Orman, Rosie O’Donnell, Elton John, Tom Ford and CNN newsman Anderson Cooper.

Accepting the Excellence in Media Award from Cooper in recognition of her advocacy for gay issues, Ripa, co-host of the daily “Live With Kelly and Michael” reflected that she thought it a bit odd that “I should be celebrated for treating people like people.”

In other awards handed out at the 26th annual ceremony, Sports Illustrated was cited for outstanding overall magazine coverage, with the honor accepted by groundbreaking gay athletes Jason Collins and Michael Sam.

“Lilting,” about the relationship of a mother and her son’s lover following the son’s death, was named outstanding limited release film, while Showtime’s “L Word Mississippi: Hate the Sin,” about gay women living in the southern United States, won the documentary prize.

TV One’s “R&B Divas: Atlanta” was named outstanding reality television show.

HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” won for outstanding talk show episode while MSNBC Live took the honor for best TV journalism segment, about anti-gay discrimination in the workplace.

Nickelodeon’s “Nick News” with Linda Ellerbee, the Salt Lake City Tribune, Time magazine and Fusion.net were among winners for broadcast, print and digital journalism.

GLAAD presented other awards in Los Angeles last month, honoring “The Imitation Game,” “The Normal Heart” and filmmkaer Roland Emmerich among others.

Jonathan Groff Honors International Day Of Happiness With A Stunning Live Performance

Looking” hunk Jonathan Groff took to the stage of FOX 5’s Good Day New York to honor the U.N.-sanctioned International Day of Happiness with a stunning performance.

Groff, who is currently starring in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” at New York’s Public Theater, crooned a tender version of the famous Judy Garland/Barbra Streisand medley, “Get Happy/Happy Days are Here Again,” to mark the occasion.

The 29-year-old “Glee” and “Spring Awakening” veteran said he was excited to participate on behalf of his musical director and friend, Mary-Mitchell Campbell, who moderated a U.N. panel yesterday on how happiness can impact global issues. In addition to her work on Broadway musicals like “Finding Neverland,” Mitchell is the founder and executive director of Artists Striving to End Poverty, or ASTEP, which aims to “connect performing and visual artists with underserved youth in the U.S.”

“Hearing that you bring happiness to people from performing means everything,” Groff told The Huffington Post in a statement. He also wanted to get the word out about how everyone can make a difference via the Happy Acts campaign, a Live Happy magazine initiative.

And what makes Groff the happiest these days? “Spending time with my 2-week-old niece.”

Mitchell said she wanted to be involved in the panel because she’s found that “happiness is a choice.”

“People who are happy also have a sense of contentment, and that allows for them to see and connect with others because they aren’t as focused on just themselves and their problems,” she said. “That connection point is needed for us to start to deal with the bigger issues the world faces.”

Groff can be seen in the series finale of “Glee,” which airs March 20. The second season finale of “Looking” will air March 22.
