EXCLUSIVE: Kenzo Taps Karen O to Record Original Song

HEAR MY SONG: First film, now music. Having commissioned leading filmmakers including Gregg Araki and Sean Baker to create short films, Kenzo has tapped singer-songwriter Karen O to record an original song, and writer-director Ana Lily Amirpour to direct the accompanying film.
Titled “Yo! My Saint,” the track will be released on Jan. 12 across more than 50 streaming services including Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Pandora, Deezer and Google Play Music. A companion limited-edition vinyl is to go on sale on Jan. 22 in Kenzo stores and online.
While championing female talent is nothing new for Kenzo creative directors Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, the project marks the first time the label has released an original song. Others brands which have produced music include Burberry, which supports British artists via its Burberry Acoustic initiative, and Kitsuné, which has its own record label.

Best known as the frontwoman of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, O — whose full name is Karen Lee Orzolek — frequently works with director Spike Jonze, another member of Kenzo’s extended tribe of creative collaborators. The two were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “The Moon Song,” which appeared on the soundtrack of Jonze’s movie “Her.”

Karen Kaiser and Nicolas Kern’s Wedding in Upstate New York

karen kaiser wedding

Stylist Karen Kaiser and photographer Nicolas Kern’s story is a Fashion Week fairy tale. The two met during a magazine launch party in New York in 2009: “We had a brief tête-à-tête over Japanese culture and food, and the rest is history,” remembers Karen.

The couple dated for almost five years before the proposal. “Nicolas asked me to marry him very unexpectedly one afternoon just before we were about to leave to spend the weekend with some dear friends,” says Karen. “He had had the ring for quite some time, apparently, and waited for a moment that felt special and intimate. I was overtaken by tears of joy.”

During the early stages of the planning process, Karen and Nicolas realized a key goal of theirs was that the celebration give their families a chance to really get to know each other. With this in mind, they settled on the Southwood Estate in Germantown, New York, as the venue, a place they had visited together during their courtship and fallen in love with. “The estate offers many rooms, so our families were able to stay on the premises,” explains Karen. “And it was great to see everyone get together and to share so many special moments.” Additionally, the setting felt symbolic in that it somehow evoked home for both of them, reminding Nicolas of his origins in Austria on the Wörthersee and Karen of the landscape in Indiana.

Ever the stylist, Karen drew upon two specific images for her wedding look. “One was from a 1968 Vogue,” she says. “It was a photo of a wedding cape designed by Cristóbal Balenciaga and photographed by David Bailey. After registering that image, I attended Alexander Wang’s spring 2015 Balenciaga show in Paris, where a white cape walked down the runway. As soon as I saw it, I was certain I had to have it for my wedding day.”

The second image was a photo of the wedding dress worn by style icon Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. “To find the perfect balance, I asked my very dear friend Deborah Milner to design a timeless dress with a modern sensibility,” says Karen. “She has consulted with the likes of Isabella Blow, Philip Treacy, Daphne Guinness, Amanda Harlech, and others including Alexander McQueen, where she continues to work with Sarah Burton on couture. Between my inspirations and her creativity and incredible craftsmanship, we arrived at the final piece. The cut, the fit, and the feeling of the heavy crepe fabric still amazes me today, and I cannot thank Deborah enough.”

To top off Karen’s vision, Treacy graciously customized her veil piece. “I wanted something very minimalistic to echo the shape of the couture pockets on the Balenciaga cape,” explains Karen. “When Philip heard that we were having the ceremony in a church, he added crystals to the piece. They glimmered in the light as I walked down the aisle, adding an air of magic.”

Karen’s shoes were beige leather pointed-toe Altuzarra slingback pumps with a small bow for a chic, feminine feeling. She paired the shoes with toes painted in Essie’s Jazz nail color, which was recommended to her by Vogue.com’s Beauty Director Catherine Piercy.

“My husband had gone with his instincts and chosen a pavé Repossi ring for the proposal,” says Karen. “I love Gaia’s restrained elegance, and therefore found it suiting to accessorize my wedding look with more pieces from her collections—including a Berbère ear cuff in rose gold with pavé diamonds and two rings from the Antifer collection, also in rose gold with full pavé diamonds.”

Karen called upon friends David Adams (colorist), Peter Gray (hairstylist), and Maud Laceppe (makeup artist) to do her hair and makeup on the big day. “Not only have we known each other for years and collaborated on many projects, but Peter, Maud, and I have worked on several seasons of Gabriele Colangelo’s show in Milan,” says Karen.

The couple had a Catholic wedding mass in St. Mary’s Church in Hudson, New York, accompanied by an organ, a trumpet, and a violin. “Nicolas and I each have one sibling, whom we chose as our witnesses,” says Karen. “I entered the church preceded by five flower girls and two ring bearers. And then after the ceremony, our ‘getaway’ car was a red Triumph. The car perfectly fit the part, since the wedding reception alluded to the French bohemian sensibility of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin.”

The cocktail hour took place around the estate’s pool with a few Balinese antique blankets and pillows that friends Scott Studenberg and John Targon of Baja East made for the couple. The Bailsmen added their French swing tunes, and with the outdoor location and minimal decoration, it was a leisurely experience where everyone mingled and enjoyed themselves. “It was important to us that everything felt unpresumptuous,” says Karen.

For food, the couple chose a farm-to-table concept catered by Fire Roasted Catering of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, as they both love organic and local produce. At dinner, a prepared pig on a spit, salt-crusted sea bass, and roasted vegetables over open fires were served.

After dinner, Nicolas’s father gave a brief toast and introduced the couple’s first dance, which was to “Le Vent Nous Portera” by Noir Désir. “This was an unforgettable magical moment,” remembers Karen. Then, the couple’s friend Alvise Marino heated up the dance floor playing classics from the sixties and then more modern music as the night went on.

The reception ended after hours by the pool with swimming and more dancing under the stars.

Female Entrepreneur : Karen Quinones

2015-07-11-1436622237-5075857-KQ.jpg

I first met Karen Quinones when she walked into a luxury fashion showroom in Paris. We were working on a selection of women’s wear for her boutique and I kind of fell in love. She is the kind of person that lights up a room and has the natural ability to command attention in an elegantly, understated way. Her energy bounces between tough director and sweet curiosity. She knows what she likes and is not afraid to stand behind her intuition yet open to learning about new ideas. This appears to be her formula for success. Karen has been scouting cutting edge brands for her boutique in Miami, appropriately named “En Avance,” for over 20 years. She started out on Lincoln Road in Miami with a multi brand store but had the foresight to move to the Design District before any other luxury brand had even heard of it. After working with Karen on several buys; I had the chance to collaborate with her on a “Pop Up Shop” during Miami’s Art Basel. The experience was like tagging along with the Mayor of Miami’s Design District. She knows everything that is going on as far as business development of the district, has the admiration of local business owners and the devoted trust of her clients. The thing Karen would hate to admit is she is also strikingly beautiful and the woman who will roll up her sleeves and jump into any task, big or small, with equal dedication. I wanted to know more about Karen and hit her up with a few questions….

EP – I have never fully asked you about your background and driving force. How did you get to where you are and is it what you envisioned?

KQ – As a child I grew up surrounded by fashion. My grandmother made couture bridal gowns and my father worked at a men’s store that specialized in custom suiting. Fashion is in my DNA.

My grandmother taught me how to sew and at a very early age I was making my own clothes… mainly pants. As a child I wasn’t allowed to wear pants so in high school, I would change into my pants at the bus stop. Sorry Dad..
.
At the age of 15 I started working in retail and never looked back.

EP – Opening a boutique is a brave venture and relocating a boutique an even more courageous act. What were the signs that helped you make that decision?

KQ – Well my decision to move from Lincoln Road was due to the fact that my building was sold and the new landlord quadrupled my rent. It was a difficult time for me as I am a creature of habit and to move my business to the Design District which at that time was mainly abandoned buildings, home interior and design firms, took a big leap of faith. I basically had to start over. Necessity is the mother of all
(re) invention

2015-07-11-1436622281-6467584-Store1.PNG

EP – How did it feel when the major fashion houses started dropping stores around you? Was it more threat of competition or justification that you have vision?

KQ – After being alone in the Design District for so long, it was great to see the majors coming in. After all, this was the plan outlined for me back in 2006, it just took a lot longer than expected because of the crash in 2008. And of course it’s always great to have Hermes and Dior as your neighbors.

On the flip side, with major names come major increases which lead me to my move one block West nearly 2 years ago.

EP – You have built your business on being a few steps ahead; what brands have you pioneered and what brands are on your horizon?

KQ – I see several innovative Designers coming out of Eastern Europe. I recently saw Paskal while working in Paris and I was impressed by her laser-cut technique. She seems to be the most promising Ukrainian Designer.

2015-07-11-1436622341-4038188-Store2.PNG

EP – Do you identify as a female entrepreneur? What have been some of the obstacles and advantages of your gender?

KQ – I don’t feel I have had any advantages being a Latin female in this business in fact the opposite, it’s challenging to get respect in this business. I’ve been in business for nearly 25 years now and I still face obstacles. In my dealings with landlords, it has been especially difficult as my last two landlords were men.

EP – You are always on the go; can you share a snapshot of your travel schedule?

KQ – My travel schedule for Pre-Spring market was hectic.
I started the month of June in NYC, then back to Miami, off to Milan, back to Miami, off to Paris to wrap up market and back to Miami July 1st.

EP – Retailers are having a tough time dealing with client retention due to the expanded options offered by the internet and overall flooding of the market with goods. How do you plan to keep your business viable?

KQ – With internet shopping at your fingertips, it’s very difficult at times. There needs to be regulations for online stores, especially from Europe who ship tax free but that’s another issue…

In order to stay relevant, I too have an online store but I make sure I have different designers…the smaller brands that are hard to find online. Also, I think the client still wants that personal service and the in-store experience. I still need to touch the fabric, see the details and those things aren’t possible online.

EP – What advice do you have for any person who has ever dreamed of having a shop?

KQ – If it’s your dream, understand that it’s hard work. You have to love what you do and do what you love. Never follow trends, your instinct is key along with dedication and commitment.

EP – You are obviously following your passion and that dedication has lead to your success. What have you learned by doing what you love?

KQ – I have learned that less is more. Attention to detail is most important. Also trust your instincts.

EP – Without giving too much away; what is next?

KQ – I would love to have a small store in either NY or Paris…who knows, maybe one day.

"Though the play reads very well as a novel, it deserves to be on stage, especially in schools. Fine writing, but also a solid message." Grady Harp Homes for unwed mothers disappeared when contraceptives became readily available and abortion legal. But in the early 1950s a girl who became pregnant "out of wedlock," was often treated as an outcast, a "bad girl," who "got herself pregnant," and needed to be hidden away from polite society. The fictional Safe Haven Home for Unwed Mothers provides shelter from a judgmental society, but reveals its hypocrisy as well. The young women of this play come from all levels of society, rich and poor, educated and uneducated, sharing only the plight of their unwanted pregnancies. Marty is large and loud, hiding her vulnerability behind imitations of movie stars. Tinker is Marty's go-fer, a tiny girl from the hills with a huge heart, who never learned to read. Mary is the oldest. She made the mistake of falling in love with her minister. Rebecca's a southern belle who swears she's a good girl who was raped and claims to be shocked by the behavior of the other girls. She finds comfort in secretly reading dirty books. Kameela is frightened and silent, planning to do what she thinks will make her a good girl again. Sarah watches and learns. This is a story of frightened and angry young women, faced with the decision of whether to keep or give up their babies for adoption, but finding strength in a friendship built by mutual hardship and gallows humor. Review by Lola, for GoodReads: I'd heard of women in the fifties being "sent away" if they got pregnant out of wedlock, but I didn't really know much about it. What a difference from our culture today. It would have been impossible for these women to imagine a time when there would be a TV show called "Sixteen and Pregnant" that brought attention to young unwed mothers and made celebrities out of them. My favorite girls were Marty, Mary, and Sarah. I loved Marty's wit and spunk, and Mary was just so sweet. Her backstory was probably the saddest to me, and I liked the scene between the social worker and Mary's minister. I was like, "Oh, dude, you guilty of something, aren't you? I know you are." I just got so mad for Mary, but I also admired her. She seemed so level-headed about everything. My favorite part was probably Sarah's letter to Marty. I hated that the girls couldn't keep in contact with each other even if they wanted to. It would've been nice for them to have that outside support system. Good play! I'd like to see this performed one day.

Sometimes hope for the future is found in the ashes of yesterday. Shane Galanter is a man ready to put down roots after years of searching. But is he making the right choice? Or is there a woman somewhere who even now remembers—as does he—those long-ago days . . . and a love that hasn’t faded with time? Lauren Gibbs is a successful international war correspondent who gave up on happily-ever-after years ago—when it was ripped away from her. Since then, she’s never looked back. So why can’t she put to rest the one question that haunts her: Why is life so empty? Emily Anderson is a college freshman raised by her grandparents and about to take her first internship as a journalist. But before she can move ahead, she discovers a love story with a tragic ending that came accompanied her birth. As a result, she is compelled to look back and search out the mother she’s never met. A young woman seeking answers to her heart’s deep questions. A man and woman separated by lies and long years . . . yet who have never forgotten each other. With hallmark tenderness and power, Karen Kingsbury weaves a tapestry of lives, loss, love, and faith—and the miracle of resurrection.
