Levi’s Unveils Project F.L.X. Customization Studio in Downtown L.A.

This weekend Levi’s will launch a limited-edition customization studio in downtown Los Angeles that will allow denim lovers to create a jean finish from start to, well, finish.
Created with state-of-the-art Project F.L.X. (future-led execution), the portable studio uses the latest advances in laser-powered technology to digitize the design and development of denim finishing, enabling Levi’s to take customization to new levels. Fans can pick their denim finish — rips, fades, distressing — and wash, and watch as lasers do the work in minutes, followed by sustainable washing.
The by-appointment-only studio, which will be open through Oct. 15, is a precursor to in-store Project F.L.X. technology that will be available starting in spring 2019.
The heritage denim brand has long nurtured the custom experience, first with its Lot No. 1 program for made-to-order jeans, then with Levi’s Tailor Shops for pins, patches, alterations, repairs and chain stitch embroidery. Now, Project F.L.X. will allow customers to design their own one-of-a-kind pair of Levi’s jeans and jackets.
Throughout the studio’s 10-week stay, notable friends of the brand such as Kelly Slater, Victor Cruz, Kith, Clare Vivier and Karla Welch will create limited-edition pieces at the studio for giveaways on Levi’s Instagram platform.

Chrissy Teigen, John Legend Cheer Brooklyn Decker at Finery’s L.A. Launch

“We realized that women were spending more on their clothing than their education, and yet there is so much that is hanging in their closets that they don’t use,” said Whitney Casey by way of explaining why she and Brooklyn Decker decided to create Finery, the virtual wardrobe and styling app they launched in March 2017.
Just over a year later, the former CNN journalist and the model-actress celebrated with a launch party at the Microsoft Lounge in Culver City, Calif. While the company is based in New York, where both divide their time with Austin, Tex., Decker has a host of friends in Los Angeles, such as Chrissy Teigen, John Legend and Jen Atkin, all of whom came to cheer her on, as did New Yorker Emmy Rossum (both she and Decker are filming television shows in L.A. this summer).

Frankies Bikinis to Launch RTW During L.A. Runway Show

Frankies Bikinis, the Los Angeles-based contemporary swimwear line founded five years ago by then-18-year-old Malibu native Frankie Aiello, is branching out into ready-to-wear. The collection will debut alongside Frankies’ resort 2019 swim collection during a runway show in L.A. on June 21.
Aiello, now 23, said she chose to forgo showing at Miami Swim Week, which she has done for the past four years. “I feel like at this point I could show in Miami with my eyes closed. Now was the time to bring it back to my hometown and do something different,” she said. (Another 18-year-old designer, Gigi Caruso, will make her Miami Swim runway debut this year.)

The designer believes there are few rules to follow in fashion anymore, which is also the idea behind her rtw collection. “I cringe when I hear the words ‘beach cover-up.’ We wanted to detach ourselves from that and create a new era of cover-ups.”
Social media, she said, has enabled customers to reach her directly asking for styling advice on how to wear their swimsuits both on and off the beach.

Canadian Activewear Brand Lolë to Open L.A. Headquarters, Release Men’s

When the women and men who wore Quiksilver and Roxy in their teens and 20s grow up, what do they wear? Former Quiksilver president Bernard Mariette, who’s been chief executive officer of Canadian activewear brand Lolë since leaving the surf giant in 2008, is betting that he knows.
“I know these ladies, I’ve followed them my whole career. The Roxy girl who was 15 to 25 years old 25 years ago is our customer now. They’re not teenagers anymore; fashion is not as important to them as style,” said Mariette.
His company is now in a position to cater to them even more, and that includes the men. Coalision Inc., the parent company of Lolë and Paradox, has secured $ 18 million in cash financing from existing backers and shareholders Simon Equity Partners and Pelican Investment Fund, a management-based fund owned by Mariette.
Mariette, a well-known yoga business guru who worked alongside Quiksilver founder Bob McKnight from 1993 to 2008, plans to break with conventional activewear brands with the recent injection of capital.

A look from Lolë’s spring outerwear collection.

“Our priorities are developing in the U.S. market, launching men’s and developing internationally,” said Mariette. “It’s an exciting time because we have the financial resources for hiring new players

While Victoria Beckham’s Reebok capsule collaboration won’t be released until later this year, the designer unveiled what she called “a little merch collection” on Thursday night during a Reebok event held at The House on Sunset in West Hollywood. Beckham was joined by longtime Reebok ambassador Shaquille O’Neal as well her husband David Beckham and their three sons Brooklyn, Cruz and Romeo, who all wore coordinating monochromatic pieces from their mother’s new line. “They are very excited because they love sportswear,” she said. “And they’re huge Shaq fans.”

The new throwback line pays homage to O’Neal and consists of two shirts and two hoodies emblazoned with the NBA All Star’s name. The pieces will be available next month on Reebok and Beckham’s web sites. The collection was inspired by Beckham’s recent visit to the brand’s Boston headquarters, where she explored the Reebok archives and found herself drawn to its heritage basketball pieces from the Nineties.

Hillary Clinton, Yara Shahidi Keynote Teen Vogue Summit in L.A.

As she posed for a photo with a large group of police officers at 72 and Sunny’s Playa Vista campus in Los Angeles, Clinton told the photographer, “This is a very important group. Take a good picture.” The former Secretary of State and presidential candidate had just completed the opening keynote conversation with activist and “Black-ish” actress Yara Shahidi.
While the question-and-answer session lasted 40 minutes, it took less than seven for the discussion to shift toward the previous night’s vote on tax reform. “In the last 24 hours, the Senate passed this absolutely horrible tax-cut plan,” Clinton said, as the crowd booed in support of her sentiment. “It’s great for Donald Trump and his family. It’s great for the billionaires who support him, but it’s going to make life much harder for middle-class families and poor families. It even cuts the tax deduction for teachers who buy supplies for their classrooms and their students.”

The Outnet Toasts Campaign With Amber Valletta in L.A.

The Outnet’s executive vice president Andres Sosa welcomed Amber Valletta to the family at a dinner at Jean-Georges Beverly Hills on Thursday night. The supermodel appears as the first “face” for the online retailer, part of the Yoox Net-a-porter Group, in its fall digital campaign alongside pal Missy Rayder.
“We’ve never pictured a personality in any of our campaigns before, and we thought Amber was the perfect person to bring it to life,” Sosa said. The small gathering included some of Valletta’s oldest friends, Jaime King, Crystal Lourd, Rosetta Getty, Ross Cassidy, Jennifer Meyer, Shiva Rose and Cameron Silver. Also in the mix were Erica Pelosini, Carlos Lopez, Brigette Romanek, Elsa Dahan and Shea Marie.
Valletta wore a Saint Laurent sequin sheath and smoking jacket, part of The Outnet’s discounted high-fashion offerings. Some guests found it hard to believe that she’s a mother of a 17-year-old son. “It was his birthday yesterday, and we went car shopping,” Valletta said. She agreed to let him get a pickup truck, she said, “because it’s sturdy and safe.”
“Teenagers can be a handful” said Getty, who has two. “I’m trying to negotiate with my daughter right now, because she’s trying to stay out past her curfew.

Erica Tanov to Open First L.A. Boutique at The Row DTLA

Berkeley-based designer Erica Tanov will open her first Los Angeles boutique at The Row DTLA with regular hours starting next month. The 650-square-foot space, which will be open on Sundays starting this week, will feature an assortment of Tanov’s clothing, accessories and home goods, alongside a select group of independent designers and including Bay Area painter Emily Payne, Oregon ceramicist Notary Ceramics and furniture craftsman Russell Fong.
“It wasn’t on my radar to open a store in Los Angeles until Runyon Group approached me,” said Tanov of the shopping center developers behind Platform in Culver City. “When I saw that like-minded independent brands were also there, including Bay Area companies like Mission Workshop and Tartine, I was intrigued.”
Tanov said the “crumbling, industrial” vibe of the complex, the former American Apparel factories, which were built in 1918, appealed to her sensibility as well. “It was in some way very luxurious,” she said of the soaring ceilings with exposed beams and raw concrete floors. She added her own vintage fixtures and display cases and an enormous antique door she had in storage. Black powder-coated rolling racks completed the look.
Collaborations with California-based artists distinguish Tanov’s work, including fine art photographer Todd Hido, who produced

Chrissy Teigen Attends A.L.C. x Intermix ‘On Duty’ Dinner in L.A.

The 16-piece contemporary line, for which Teigen was the muse, includes Lieberman’s takes on the classic white shirt, black trousers, track suit and other wardrobe staples, and ranges in price from $ 128 to $ 895 retail.
Lieberman started the collection with the track pant. “Since my days as a stylist, traveling around the world, I’ve wanted to find a pant that could take you from city to city, day to night. Pair it with a sneaker, pair it with a heel, it is equally cool and totally effortless,” she said. “My good friend Jen Atkin puts it best, ‘Life is hard, looking good should be easy.’”
The collection is available exclusively at the retailer’s web site and brick-and-mortar boutiques. Guests, including Teigen’s stylist Monica Rose, singer Kacy Hill and Justin Bieber’s stylist Karla Welch, all got the dress code memo, arriving in white shirts and black pants.

A. Sauvage to Launch Sportswear Collection After Moving Studio to L.A.

Adrien Sauvage, who established his men’s wear label A. Sauvage in London in 2010, has become the latest designer to decamp for Los Angeles, opening up a studio in Beverly Hills this summer.
“Basically I came here for Christmas holiday and I never went back,” said Sauvage, who said Robert Downey Jr. was among the first of his clients to encourage the move. Sauvage launched his line of contemporary suiting in Harrods, then opened his own shop on Bond Street, and today his made-to-measure pieces are also available online. He still travels back to London every eight weeks for his made-to-measure clients, but says the California lifestyle has inspired a new idea — a sportswear line due out in January.
“I surveyed the land of T-shirts. I thought two or three years ago the whole sportswear thing was going to go in the bin, but it’s still here. It’s even tweaked my own style a bit. My sportswear line is going to have a casual elegance, the whole seven days a week wardrobe. It’s perfect for getting on or off a plane,” he said. He is still exploring wholesale partners for the line.
Sauvage has several star NBA clients, such as Dwyane Wade,

L.A. Reid On Not Bailing Bobby Shmurda Out: “It’s A Different Day”

Epic Records CEO L.A. Reid has been enduring some criticism for not bailing out breakout label star Bobby Shmurda after his arrest late last year on a bevy of charges. Reid explained his reasons for not bailing out the troubled rapper while explaining the times have changed.

Shmurda, who is currently awaiting trial, has been in jail since last December after investigators pegged him as the ringleader of a violent New York-based Crips gang known as GS9. Fellow rap artist Rowdy Rebel and other members of the GS9 gang have also been arrested and charged since Shmurda’s downfall. Reid has kept relatively mum about the developments in the case but shared more details in an interview with the good folks over at Rap Radar.

From The Urban Daily:

“Well, it made me feel like people don’t know anything about my business, right? It’s really not their business. That’s the truth about it, right? Um, we’re not elected officials here. And we’re not at liberty to disclose how we do business. It’s fair practice, I can tell you that. But, it’s not the industry that it once was. We seriously don’t make the money we used to make. That’s a fact of life, right?

“Bobby Shmurda is not the same as Snoop Dogg and Murder Was The Case, who’s coming off The Chronic and his first album. It’s a different era, ya know? And, we’re a publicly held corporation. We just aren’t in the same position we were in back in those days. So, it’s a different day.”

Matt McGorry, Robbie Rogers Step Out for To Boot New York in L.A.

YOUNG TURKS: Some Millennials are so busy that they don’t have time to eat. That was the case with soccer player Robbie Rogers and actor Matt McGorry on Thursday night, when they dashed from To Boot New York’s dinner at Bar Marmont in West Hollywood before they could feast on caprese salad, crispy cauliflower, herb-roasted chicken and grilled skirt steak with shoe designer Adam Derrick, actor David Bernon, cycling entrepreneur Lorenzo Martone, and stylists Sophie Lopez and Michael Cioffoletti.
For Rogers, clad in a jean jacket embroidered with gold stars, his excuse was an early practice on Friday morning with the LA Galaxy.
McGorry — who’s been busy dancing in a mullet and mustache in Peking Duk’s new music video and producing his first movie, “Stealing Mona,” which he described as “a comedy about a bunch of idiots who are low-level thugs and they decide to steal the ‘Mona Lisa’” — rushed to the set of “How to Get Away with Murder.” Even during the cocktail hour, he tweeted to his 368,000 fans. Now that he stands on a platform built through his work on the hit ABC drama and Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black,” McGorry is pushing for social change.

From Nirvana to GG Allin, Flipside’s Krk Dominguez Photographed Post-Hardcore in L.A.

Like all vital, dynamic art movements throughout history, punk rock suffered from the high bar set by the earliest proponents of the movement. By 1980, no punk band in England could ever hope to match what the Sex Pistols and Clash had done and likewise in Los Angeles, the Germs and Black Flag were high water marks of the genre that few in the mid to late 1980s could reach.

Krk Dominguez solo show “More Than A Witness: Post-Hardcore and Beyond 1985-2015.” Lethal Amounts Gallery, Downtown Los Angeles.

As it was for the bands in L.A., so too was it for the photographers on the scene. The footsteps of the great Ed Colver were impossible to fill. With the lion’s share of the iconic shots hoarded by that one talent, few could imagine that an artistic record of the ongoing movement would make for a compelling art exhibit.

And yet, almost thirty years after he began, Krk Dominguez has delivered a reminder that there was life after “Damaged” in the clubs and bars and that documenting it in the shadow of a giant allowed him to find his own artistic voice. Hanging floor to ceiling, the over-poster-sized photo editions are printed on thick paper and feature glimpses into bygone moments of beer, sweat, anarchy and the culture of suburban American nonconformity made manifest.

2015-08-28-1440746750-8149965-Lethal2.jpg
Krk Dominguez solo show “More Than A Witness: Post-Hardcore and Beyond 1985-2015.” Lethal Amounts Gallery, Downtown Los Angeles.

The bands that came after punk’s first wave knew they were not foraging new territory and that created a hunger to push any edge they ever happened upon. At L.A.’s Lethal Amounts Gallery, Dominguez presented “More Than A Witness,” his solo exhibit documenting thirty years of photographing punk and alternative performances. Dominguez casts a wide umbrella to describe the scene he covered: Post-Hardcore. The Post-Hardcore scene broke from many orthodoxies that had strangled the creative energy out of punk. Long hair, the last taboo of original punk, seems the trademark at times in these pictures. Bands suddenly didn’t give a shit to admit they liked Black Sabbath as much or more than they liked Fear or Bad Religion. The Post-Hardcore scene welcomed many touring acts through Los Angeles, returning the favor that many early L.A. greats had done small scenes nationwide in relentless touring across the country.

A large centerpiece triptych of GG Allin installed beneath an enlarged proof sheet of Norvana playing in 1989 at Al’s Bar. From the Krk Dominguez solo show “More Than A Witness: Post-Hardcore and Beyond 1985-2015.” Lethal Amounts Gallery, Downtown Los Angeles.

Post Hardcore was good at finding the edges and Krk’s camera found its chief purveyors heading straight toward the cliff. The glazed eyes of GG Allin stare into oblivion in the show’s artiest indulgence, a wall installation triptych that repeats the same photo of Allin once on a car hood and twice on more traditional rectangular surfaces. The patron saint of self-destruction holds center court, but look above – a proof sheet blowup of Nirvana playing to twenty people on a bill they shared with bands like Claw Hammer at Downtown L.A.’s Al’s Bar in 1989. The installation seems to imply that while Allin did himself in quite spectacularly, Kurt Cobain was ultimately no less self-destructive when he committed suicide.

Nirvana pops up a lot here, with the legendary Claw Hammer co-bill show and hanging out at Raji’s two years before fame would strike, pre-Dave Grohl. Nirvana’s “Grunge” label belies them as the ultimate purveyors of a Post-Hardcore sound that fearlessly played verses slower than the punk thrash standard and then blew out all cylinders in sheer intensity on choruses. Yes, they were the band that “won it all” and in true punk fashion, threw it all away. And Krk was there when they were just one more band to shoot and interview for the pages of Flipside, L.A.’s longest-running punk zine.

2015-08-28-1440746516-8246806-KrkHimself.jpg
Photographer Krk Dominguez at the mid-August opening reception for his solo show “More Than A Witness: Post-Hardcore and Beyond 1985-2015.” Lethal Amounts Gallery, Downtown Los Angeles.

The motto of founder Al Flipside: “Be more than a witness,” is a maxim Dominguez took in earnest. We are treated to a chaotic stage shot of Savage Republic that blurs where the band ends and the crowd begins. GWAR in all of their costumed glory are still the furthest thing from quaint over 25 years after Krk shot them in what appears to be a nightclub parking lot. Fugazi, the Dwarves, the Melvins – it all starts to blur in an installation that packs in large prints with no concept of what a minimal hanging might even look like. And were proper gallery centerline hanging instructions given, well, El Duce, of the Mentors, has a time-honored one-finger salute to cure you of any illusions of artsy seriousness or nostalgia for a simpler time.

Two Cult L.A. Designers Collaborate on a Sculptural Ceramics Line

dream collective

Each Friday this summer, Kathryn Bentley (designer of the cult Los Angeles jewelry line Dream Collective) and Bari Ziperstein (whose intricate B.Zippy ceramics are a favorite among the fashion and art crowd) spent the day together in Ziperstein’s L.A. studio as a sort of thought experiment. “We discovered similar ways of thinking about structure, pattern, and materials,” says Bentley, who has long collected Ziperstein’s work and also stocked it in her Silver Lake store for the past year. “We talked about everything from angled structures of Cold War Brutalist architecture to the color and patterns of the Memphis Milano movement and raw clay surfaces reminiscent of Future Primitive sculptures.”

The conversations naturally led to a collaboration, and the resulting series of B.Zippy for Dream Collective pots and vases debuted at Dream Collective’s storefront this week. The collection, like all of Ziperstein’s work, is both functional and strikingly sculptural; its column motifs, drip patterns, and matte finishes directly resulted from the duo’s dialogue about aesthetics. And though Bentley left the hands-on making of the pieces to Ziperstein, it was “an intellectual collaboration; we have a similar creative process,” she says. “Bari is a thinker and a true artist.”

Pharrell, Pusha T Propel Creativity With Adidas and L.A. Kids

THE NEW SUPERSTARS: Rap music fired up more than 200 artists, athletes and students to get creative with Pharrell Williams and Adidas at Los Angeles’ Milk Studio on Saturday night.
Using the athletic company’s Original Superstar sneaker as a canvas, guests dug into a tote bag of tools provided by Adidas, which wanted to see how the Millennials would reinvent its signature shell toe detail. Each unique design was then digitally printed onto an actual pair of shoes and projected as the backdrop for a surprise performance by rapper Pusha T, one of the five influencers hand-picked by the multifaceted Williams.
“The goal was for Adidas to open up doors and provide a platform for young creative minds to, you know, bring their ideas into fruition and to see that it could be done,” said Williams, who enjoys an ongoing collaboration with Adidas that lets him show not only his artistic side but also his progressive views on society and culture.
“It’s just a way to be with the culture, with the kids and with the people,” Pusha T said. “We’re pushing creativity, and getting to see the youth.”
The event embodied Adidas’ fall campaign motif of creating for an audience of one, something exemplified

Alcohol Companies at L.A. Pride Leave a Bitter Taste

Now that American support for same-sex marriage has risen to numbers as high as 63 percent, gay has become cool. Hundreds of thousands of people turned out to this year’s Los Angeles Pride Festival, the 45th annual celebration of the world’s first ever Pride Parade, which took place in the City of Angels in 1970.

With growing cultural acceptance for sexual and gender minorities, companies have caught on, strategically launching marketing campaigns directly geared towards the LGBTQ community. The Pride displays at Target stores nationwide this month are just one of many examples. This year’s Pride festival would not have been successful without its share of corporate sponsors — Bud Light, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Delta Airlines, Wells Fargo, Toyota, Red Bull, and Transparent.

While many will applaud these companies’ support as a metric of how far society has come, I’m taken aback. Two of these seven primary corporate sponsors are alcohol companies. Instead of lauding Bud Light and Tito’s for supporting the LGBTQ community, I am highly skeptical of their intent.

It’s no secret that alcoholism is a huge problem among LGBTQ Americans. Alcohol abuse is 2.5-5 times more prevalent among LGBTQ Americans than their heterosexual and cisgender counterparts. Public health experts have pinpointed prejudice and discrimination as the roots of this drastic health disparity.

The tobacco industry has similarly capitalized on the higher rates of substance abuse in the LGBTQ community. In no time, alcohol companies have followed in their footsteps. In giving to Pride festivals and using social media to back LGBTQ causes with their brands, alcohol companies are exploiting and endangering the lives and wellbeing of sexual and gender minorities.

The organizers of the LA Pride Festival also deserve a fair amount of scrutiny for opting to accept donations from alcohol companies. While I am sure that the money helped make this year’s Pride as successful as it was, the funds will inevitably make their way back into the hands of Bud Light and Tito’s — companies that will no doubt continue to reap the benefits of my community’s health problems.

The difficult toll alcoholism takes on LGBTQ individuals was visible to the naked eye at Pride. There was no shortage of passed-out drunk people, aggressive pushing and shoving at the concerts, and I even witnessed a brawl break out as my friends waited in line for a Bud Light.

However, beyond these short-term consequences, many members of my community suffer more difficult effects of the substance. Penalties for DUIs and steep costs for rehabilitation programs are among the long-term ramifications of alcoholism. Not to mention, alcohol consumption increases one’s aptitude for high-risk sexual behaviors and injection drug use — two major modes of HIV transmission.

There is little question that the money used to fund Pride this year will amplify a major problem in the LGBTQ community. Sadly, the presence of alcohol companies marks Pride’s loss of its original and historic mission — defiance.

When Los Angeles inaugurated the Pride festival, Pride was a commemoration of the Stonewall Riots — a radical act of defiance against a police raid of the Stonewall Inn in New York City. We are fortunate that many sexual and gender minorities now have the privilege of safety and the protection of the police. However, these same issues of police brutality are affecting our peers of color nationwide. This could have been a point of emphasis for Pride, but it seemed that everyone was really just too drunk to even care.

Pride this year occurred on the heels of what’s bound to be a historic decision by the Supreme Court regarding marriage equality. While many of my peers will be toasting their champagne to celebrate their same-sex marriages, I’ll be thinking about some more serious issues.

Where is the outrage over the death of Mercedes Williamson, the ninth American trans woman who was murdered in 2015? More importantly, where are the liquor companies when our peers are getting murdered? They offer conditional solidarity for same-sex marriage, but nothing but booze to drown our sorrow in the face of adversity. There is much to celebrate, but there is also much to lament.

Perhaps when police brutality ends, when trans murders stop, and when alcoholism is no longer a problem plaguing our community, it’ll be time to have a party. For now, I won’t be supporting alcohol companies’ unethical attempt to take advantage of me or my community. Cheers.

Gola Toasts 110th Anniversary in L.A.

A KICK IN L.A.: U.K. sneaker brand Gola is coming to California to celebrate its 110th anniversary with a pop-up shop at Fred Segal Santa Monica and a party on Friday night. The brand, which has been distributed in the U.S. for a decade, recently set up its own distribution Stateside, along with a Nordstrom partnership. “From a U.S. point of view, our distribution has been much more East Coast so we’re looking to branch out in the West,” said Gola president Tony Evans. The pop-up, which will be open for four weeks, will feature a museumlike installation of the brand’s print advertisements and greatest moments in soccer — or football — history. “A lot of new brands come along every week or every month it seems, but to have a heritage is a great U.S. play for us,” said Evans, who noted that Gola’s classic styles Harrier, Comet, Quota and Equipment have been trending strongly here. The men’s Made in England collection will launch exclusively at Fred Segal, while Barcelona retailer Limited Editions will collaborate on three styles to celebrate the anniversary.

Barely Famous It Girls Sara and Erin Foster on How a “Reality Star” Does L.A.

Sara and Erin Foster Barely Famous

Heading to L.A. anytime soon? (Or just want to look like you are?) Let stylish sisters Erin and Sara Foster be your guide. After all, Erin, a comedy writer, and Sara, an actress, are born-and-bred Californians, with a family tree that includes Gigi Hadid and Brody Jenner and a brand new VH1 satirical comedy series, Barely Famous, that pokes fun at reality TV—you really can’t get more L.A. than that.

The sisters may deviate between classic film alliances—Erin holds a candle for Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise, while Sara tends toward Diane Keaton’s repeated turns for Woody Allen—but they both lay claim to an inherently California girl aesthetic. “I like to channel my inner Candice Swanepoel and attempt to be ‘hippie chic,’ ” Sara says. She favors flat sandals (“I know I look better in a heel, but I really only wear Birkenstocks and Havaianas”) and Re/Dun’s high-waisted light-wash denim, while Erin prefers off-duty classics like men’s button-down shirts, Levi’s cutoffs, and Converse, citing coconut oil as her must-have beauty product. (“Our mom is 64 and never tried Botox and doesn’t even get facials; all she uses is coconut oil on her face and body. So my sisters and I decided to get on that train,” says Sara.) And the two might have different festivals in mind this summer—Sara’s got her sights set on Burning Man, Erin on Stagecoach—but when it comes to their hometown, they have a singularly cool itinerary to share. Here, their five favorite spots, and how to look the part when you arrive.

Good-Bye To All That: 10 Products We’d Put in Beyoncé’s L.A. Welcome Basket

Beyonce and Jay Z

Beyoncé and Jay Z are moving to Los Angeles—along with every other New Yorker you know. It seems winter is no longer bearable, and suddenly everyone who lives in the city has urgent work to attend to on the West Coast. But even though L.A. is just a short flight away, the lifestyle takes some getting used to. After you’ve relished in the natural Vitamin D supply and your new ability to stand outdoors for more than five minutes without curling into yourself from the cold, there’s a small learning curve. It mostly has to do with acting chill, using crystals, and learning to be kinder to yourself.

To ease the transition and make you feel even more solid in your decision to bail and live in L.A. for a week or two (or, you know, two months), we’ve assembled a collection of beauty products for the culture-shocked New Yorker living on the West Coast. This is what we’d send to Beyoncé in a welcome basket.

For starters, you’ll need some healing Rose Crystal Organic Rosewater Facial Toner. Think of it like crystal energy you spray on your face. And it’s organic. See what we mean? If you want to maintain some of your New Yorker snark, pack Smith and Cult’s nail lacquer in “Bitter Buddhist.” Once you adjust to L.A. living, you’ll still love it—the celadon green color is the same as the array of succulents you’ll soon have sitting on your windowsill. Speaking of your new space, it has to smell like sage. It just has to. Try Blackbird’s TenOverSix incense pyres, which are little pyramids you light and let burn down—a more sophisticated approach to the hippie-ish habit of burning sage to bless your domicile.

Once the air in your house is cleansed, you have to address your aura. Aquarian Soul + Earth’s Aura Cleanse Gemstone Massage Oil should be enough to expel the bitter cold from your heart. Now all that’s left to do is get a glowy, healthy Los Angeles complexion. Stock up on Glossier’s Mega Greens Galaxy Pack: It’s a kaolin clay mask that, we’re told, is meant to be thought of as “a juice cleanse for your face.” Welcome to Los Angeles.
