EXCLUSIVE: Meet the Bag That Is Launching Hedi Slimane’s Celine Reboot

PARIS — When Hedi Slimane joined Celine in February, the first thing he did was design a new bag.
It was a smart move, considering accessories make up an estimated 65 percent of the brand’s revenues and its owner, French luxury titan Bernard Arnault, had touted the arrival of the “global superstar” designer as heralding a doubling or tripling of Celine’s turnover within five years.
Fortunately, creating accessories is an exercise Slimane relishes. The designer, who previously drove skyrocketing sales at Saint Laurent and Dior Homme, named his debut Celine creation the 16, after the location of the brand’s headquarters and atelier in a 17th-century mansion at 16 Rue Vivienne here.
Marking the house’s first official comment on the Slimane era, Séverine Merle, chief executive officer of Celine, discussed the linchpin launch exclusively with WWD. “The 16 handbag is the ultimate symbol of Hedi Slimane’s vision for Celine: it emphasizes our knowledge of incredible craftsmanship,” she said.
The French house, which has shut down its e-commerce site in the countdown to Slimane’s debut show on Sept. 28, plans to unveil a redesigned platform in early October carrying a capsule of Slimane’s new collection for women and men, alongside a selection of current season merchandise,

EA’s Origin Access Premier Service Officially Launching

EA offered PC Gamers a crack at its “vault” allowing them to play a selection of games when it first introduced its Origin Access subscription service. Now the game company is looking to up the ante with the launch of Origin Access Premium which they first teased at E3.

The biggest complaint when it came to Origin Access is lack of recent releases for PC gamers to choose from. With the new premium tier in the service, EA hopes to quell those complaints by offering those who sign up the opportunity to play upcoming big name titles such as Anthem, FIFA 19, Madden NFL 19 and Battlefield V five days early on top of having unlimited access to the games.

Of course, to get such access it’s not going to come cheap at all. Origin Access Premier will cost subscribers $ 14.99 a month and $ 99 for an annual subscription saving yourself $ 80. Once signed up you will get the perks listed above, access to the vault and 10% off Origin Store purchases. Users of lower tier service your fee of $ 4.99 per month, or $ 29.99 annually will remain the same so don’t worry about any surprises in your payment plan for now.

It’s clear video game streaming is becoming the wave, and EA has been one of the first companies to get on board with allowing gamers access to massive libraries for a fee. We wouldn’t be surprised to see other prominent video game companies to fo the streaming route and open up their libraries for a monthly or annual fee.

As an extension of his Freebandz imprint the new collection will fuse streetwear and tour merchandise appeal together. Fred Foster, Creative Director, aimed for a luxury aesthetic that could still carry an affordable price point. “I wanted to create something unique and timeless, yet accessible, that could spread the message of HNDRXX to fans all over the globe. Aside from using her animal-friendly beliefs to start her namesake accessories and lifestyle label, she put her vegan cooking skills to use in a cookbook and catering business. And now, the designer has joined forces with Donna Salyers’ Fabulous Furs to create a faux fur collection. Monday morning’s wilting heat had not diminished her enthusiasm for the project in any way, as she tried on various faux fur jackets and encouraged visitors at the New York Now trade show to do the same.
While taking a look at one of her recent collections and asking about future categories, O The Oprah Magazine’s Adam Glassman suggested Guest connect with Salyers. Liberty & Justice, Africa’s first fair trade apparel maker, is launching Uniform, a T-shirt label that will donate one school uniform to a child in Liberia for every T-shirt the company sells.
L&J founder and chief executive officer Chid Liberty was born in Liberia but grew up in Germany, where his foreign diplomat father was based in Bonn. After falling out with the then-Liberian president Samuel Doe, the elder Liberty fled to the U.S., living first in Palo Alto and then in Milwaukee, Chid Liberty said Thursday. Inspired in part by Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s 2006 election win, Liberty returned to Liberia for the first time in decades and decided to try to help further change. In 2010, he opened the Liberty & Justice factory, manufacturing for such labels as Prana and Lauren Bush’s FEED brand. The facility now employs 300 workers who share 49 percent equity. Ninety-five percent of the team are working mothers.

Sports Authority and Champion Launching Champion GEAR

While the ath-leisure trend continuing to pickup steam, Sports Authority has partnered with Champion Athleticwear to launch Champion GEAR performance-driven activewear.
As of Wednesday, the 462-unit chain will sell the women’s and men’s collection exclusively nationwide and via its e-commerce site. Sports Authority decided to bolster its more technical athletic apparel after 18 months of consumer-driven market research indicated that “people were looking for technical-driven, value-oriented performance clothing,” according to executive vice president and chief merchandising officer Stephen Binkley.
Champion GEAR tank tops, T-shirts, pants and shorts draw from four key components: Seamless, Compression, Quick-drying Champion Vapor Technology and Reflective. The latter is targeted at night-time runners and cyclists. The collection’s Millennial-friendly retail price range will run from $ 35 to $ 50. Having renovated stores in the Orlando market earlier this month, Sports Authority will unveil locations in Sacramento and Tempe May 30.
Along with an assortment of print and digital ads, as well as commercials, Champion GEAR will be spotlighted with in-store displays and through social media. Sports Authority and Champion will encourage fans to share photos and feedback with the #championgear hashtag.
