RAGING BULL is director Martin Scorsese's lacerating film biography of middleweight boxing champion Jake La Motta, who was known during his brief reign as 'The Bronx Bull.' La Motta (played with extraordinary brilliance by Robert De Niro) had early lessons in life: to steal and to fight. His aggression in the ring was a means of combating deep-seated anxieties and emotional fears. This determination and rage turned him from a young hoodlum into a champion. But his drive for the title, his brutality outside of the ring and his almost-psychotic sexual jealousy will destroy his marriage to Vickie (Cathy Moriarty) and his deepest friendships. After Vickie leaves him, a final violent confrontation with his patient, supportive brother and manager, Joey (Joe Pesci) -and the loss of his title, La Motta begins a downward slide.

George Zimmerman Threatened Jay-Z, Beyoncé During Production Of Trayvon Martin Doc

Judge in George Zimmerman stalking case: 'I hate to keep saying that name out loud'

Source: Orlando Sentinel / Getty

George Zimmerman and his alt-right tough guy act is still very much a thing, and now he’s aiming that faux aggression at two of the world’s biggest entertainers. According to new reports, the failed former night watchman issued threats toward Jay-Z and Beyoncé during the production of the recently-released Trayvon Martin documentary series.

The Blast reports:

In a series of text messages obtained The Blast, Zimmerman called Beyoncé a “broke whore” and promised she and Jay would “find themselves inside a 13 foot gator.”

The indirect threats on their lives appear in the upcoming finale of the six-part documentary series.

We’re told the messages were sent when Zimmerman was contacted by Dennis Warren, a private investigator who tracked down potential participants for the series. Warren found himself on the receiving end of hundreds of harassing messages and voicemails from the man acquitted in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

It isn’t immediately known if a criminal investigation of the threats will take place. Naturally, Jay-Z and Beyoncé have not responded to Zimmerman.

Book One of The Katherine Wheel Series catapults Katy and Jem into the global arena of World War One and changes their lives forever. Cheadle is a sleepy village in rural Wiltshire, England. Nothing much changes and little family dramas provide the only food for scandal and gossip. Then WW1 erupts into the lives of these country people, leaving no-one unscathed. We meet Katy as a young maidservant, restless for more than domestic service can offer and reckless to a fault. Katy has to develop and mature, as life throws joys and tragedies across her path and the war lures Jem away. Another man tempts her to stay home but in the end she too signs up for the war and in doing so, finds her true self, and discovers that the only thing that really matters is, after all, simply love.

He’s a powerful billionaire CEO who built the family business into an empire. The money doesn’t matter to him, but the company is his life. And then his eccentric mother wills it all to her tiny dog. I’m Vicky, the dog whisperer. (Not really, but that’s what my elderly neighbor always says.) When she dies, she surprises everybody by leaving a corporation worth billions to her dog, Smuckers. With me as his spokesperson. Suddenly I go from running my Etsy store to sitting in an elegant Wall Street boardroom with Smuckers in my lap. And my neighbor’s son, Henry Locke, aka New York’s most eligible bachelor, glaring across the table at me. Rumor has it Henry’s a business genius who’s as talented in the bedroom as he is in the boardroom. Sure, he’s gorgeous. Sex-in-a-seven-thousand dollar suit. But… He’s arrogant and infuriating. He refuses to listen to me when I insist I didn’t con his mother. He thinks he can bully me, buy me off, control me, even seduce me. Henry may have the women of Manhattan eating out of the palm of his hand, but I'm so over entitled rich guys who think they own the world. No way will his wicked smile be charming ME out of my panties. His wicked…devastating…impossible-to-resist smile. Oh well, who needs panties anyway?

Alleged HU Finesse Gawd Tyrone Hankerson Jr. Spoke With Roland Martin [WATCH]

Tyrone Hankerson Jr. Roland Martin Interview

Source: Roland Martin / Youtube

In a now-deleted Medium blog post, Howard University Law School student Tyrone Hankerson Jr. became the chief culprit in an alleged scam that led to $ 1 million in grant funds to be taken away from students. In a sit-down with Roland Martin, Hankerson told his side of the story while maintaining his innocence.

Hankerson was flanked by his lawyer for the discussion in where he stated that he was never fired or approached by the university over the embezzling of funds and believes he’s being made a scapegoat to get current president Dr. Wayne Frederick ousted from office as school dorm and building conditions have struggled.

Further on in the discussion, Hankerson shared that he’s only gotten about $ 200,000 in official grant money from the university, and made money by working year round. As for his fashion stunt game? Hankerson said his mother taught him about “balling on a budget” and that he knows the right people in the industry for some of his part-time modeling fashion shoots.

Martin Grant Pre-Fall 2018

Martin Grant just launched a capsule collection for men, so it was hardly surprising that his women’s pre-fall designs had an androgynous slant.
In fact, the designer only slightly tweaked some of his men’s styles — including a trouser suit and an oversize navy coat — to adapt them to the female form. Call it a 180-degree switch: It was his tuxedo design for French director Nicole Garcia that originally led to him creating a similar style for men.
Not that it really matters: Grant’s daywear has always been grounded in luxurious staples, such as this season’s check coat with a removable shearling collar, or a jumbo cord trench. “Quiet luxury — I mean, it’s very much about the fabrics, the textures, a very, very soft fabric feel,” he said of the collection.
A case in point was a fuzzy gray alpaca sweater that read like a very upscale spin on a sweatshirt. It came in a women’s size, but Grant suggested borrowing the men’s version for an even roomier fit. The more overtly feminine options were easy yet chic: lightweight denim pieces with topstitched details, a black jersey turtleneck dress and a cocoon-like camel cape coat.
Grant left the eveningwear for later: As

It wasn’t looking good for Bad Boys III after one of the film’s stars Martin Lawrence said to Entertainment Weekly: “I don’t think we’re going to get one, not the way everything’s turning out, Will is off doing another movie, and I don’t think it’s going to happen.” Looks like things may have changed and reportedly the highly anticipated sequel is starting production.

According to a Deadline report, Sony Pictures is in early negotiations with Belgium-raised Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to bring the third film titled Bad Boys For Life to life. If the reports are true production for the film could begin as soon as soon as August. Famed director Jerry Bruckheimer will serve as director of the third installment.

Barack Obama Pays Homage To Martin Luther King, Jr.

It’s another Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and along with the day off from work, for some, we’re getting the usual pullquotes and nods to the iconic Civil Rights revolutionary. While sometimes the praise rings hollow—see Donald Trump’s recent signing with a litany of step’n fetch itsPresident Barack Obama‘s homage to MLK rang sincere.

“Dr. King was 26 when the Montgomery bus boycott began. He started small, rallying others who believed their efforts mattered, pressing on through challenges and doubts to change our world for the better. A permanent inspiration for the rest of us to keep pushing towards justice,” tweeted the last legitimate President of the United States.

Bet he didn’t have to Google Dr. King to create that message.

As for Donald Trump, besides a couple of tweets out his ass about DACA this morning, he RT’d the White House’s cheesy weekly address. .

This box set contains three complete novels: Books 1-3 of the Out of Time Series. Out of Time: A Time Travel Mystery (Book #1) Mystery, romance and adventure… Professor Simon Cross has spent his life searching for evidence of vampires and avoiding emotional entanglements. When a mysterious accident transports Simon and his assistant, Elizabeth West, back in time, Simon finally finds both the proof that he's been looking for, and the romance that he hasn't. Simon and Elizabeth's developing relationship is tested by demons real and imagined. In 1920s Manhattan, there are more than mobsters vying for power in the city's speakeasies. When the local kingpin with a dark secret sets his sights on Elizabeth, day to day struggles become a fight for their very lives. When the Walls Fell (Book #2) Professor Simon Cross and his assistant Elizabeth West have returned from their accidental journey into the past and are adjusting to their new life together as a couple. But an unwanted visit from the Council for Temporal Studies could change everything. A murder in the past is changing the future, and if the killing isn't stopped, Simon Cross might never be born. When they arrive in 1906 San Francisco, Elizabeth and Simon have no idea who wants Victor Graham dead or how it will happen. With the earthquake that leveled most of the city just days away, the race to save Graham thrusts them into a complex mystery of jealousy and revenge where murder might be the least of their worries. Fragments (Book #3) Simon & Elizabeth are back in book #3 of the Out of Time Series! Professor Simon Cross and his assistant, Elizabeth West, thought their time traveling days were over. That's before they stumble across a World War II photograph — with missing time traveler, Evan Eldridge, injured and in desperate need of help. They find Evan in 1942 London, ill and not quite sure what's happened. He remembers only one thing with crystal clarity — the whereabouts of an artifact Hitler believes can win the war. That's information every Nazi spy in the country would kill to know. As if saving Evan and surviving war-torn England weren't enough, the outcome of the war hinges on Simon and Elizabeth finding Evan's artifact before the Nazis do. But time is running out: for them, for London, for the world. Be sure not to miss the rest of the Out of Time Series or the new Jack Wells series starting with Jacks Are Wild. The Poland Trilogy, no. 1

Genre: Historical

Publish Date: June 11, 2014

Publisher: James Conroyd Martin

Seller: Smashwords

A panoramic and epic novel in the grand romantic style, PUSH NOT THE RIVER is the rich story of Poland in the late 1700s–a time of heartache and turmoil as the country's once peaceful people are being torn apart by neighboring countries and divided loyalties. It is then, at the young and vulnerable age of seventeen, when Lady Anna Maria Berezowska loses both of her parents and must leave the only home she has ever known. With Empress Catherine's Russian armies streaming in to take their spoils, Anna is quickly thrust into a world of love and hate, loyalty and deceit, patriotism and treason, life and death. Even kind Aunt Stella, Anna's new guardian who soon comes to personify Poland's courage and spirit, can't protect Anna from the uncertain future of the country. Anna, a child no longer, turns to love and comfort in the form of Jan, a brave patriot and architect of democracy, unaware that her beautiful and enigmatic cousin Zofia has already set her sights on the handsome young fighter. Thus Anna walks unwittingly into Zofia's jealous wrath and darkly sinister intentions. Forced to survive several tragic events, many of them orchestrated by the crafty Zofia, a strengthened Anna begins to learn to place herself in the way of destiny–for love and for country. Heeding the proud spirit of her late father, Anna becomes a major player in the fight against the countries who come to partition her beloved Poland. PUSH NOT THE RIVER is based on the true eighteenth century diary of Anna Maria Berezowska, a Polish countess who lived through the rise and fall of the historic Third of May Constitution. Vivid, romantic, and thrillingly paced, it paints the emotional and unforgettable story of the metamorphosis of a nation–and of a proud and resilient young woman.

Jonathan Martin Line to Relaunch After Seven-Year Absence

Jonathan Martin, the printed top and dresses resource that had its heyday in the Eighties and Nineties, is returning to the market for spring after a seven-year absence.
Owner Uri Harkham, who founded the line in Los Angeles in 1975, said he spies a need in the better women’s market for office-appropriate tops and dresses featuring custom prints and treatments. In addition, he has launched a high-end Italian silk line called Hark + Hammer that sells pieces for $ 200 to $ 300 direct to consumers online.
“People say, ‘What are you, nuts? There’s no customer,’ but when we launched Jonathan Martin in ’75, people also thought we were nuts. But we found our niche and it was really a privilege to be in this industry. I think it’s still relevant,” said Harkham.
Meant to retail in major department stores for $ 49 to $ 79, Jonathan Martin features monthly deliveries of flutter-sleeve tops and wrap dresses with details like front-and-back embroidery and custom print borders. Harkham said the line will be available in a plus-size range and that he hopes to re-create the partnerships he had with retailers such as Lane Bryant.
“I believe we can still serve the market, so this is why I’m coming back.

When you think of 90’s Hip-Hop, Martin Lawrence is most definitely a point of discussion. So it should be no surprise that the actor and comedian will be honored at VH1’s forthcoming Hip Hop Honors: The 90’s Game Changers.

Billed as a 90’s style block party, the evening will celebrate the era of Hip-Hop’s influence on Pop culture, television, movies and its albums. The ceremony goes down Sunday, September 17 at Paramount Studios in Hollywood but will air on Monday, September 18 at 9PM ET/PT on VH1.

Last year’s Hip Hop Honors paid homage to females MC’s like Lil Kim, Queen Latifah and Missy Elliott.

Lawrence is just the first announced honoree with more to follow (get more info right here.). The comedian’s impact in the 90’s spanned television (his namesake show), movies (Bad Boys, Big Momma’s House) and stand up (he hosted Def Comedy Jam).

To quote Gang Starr, you gots to give the credit when the credit is due. With that said, let us look back at one of the funniest scenes from Martin, ever (RIP Tommy Ford).

Jack Walsh (Robert De Niro) is a tough ex-cop turned bounty hunter. Jonathan "The Duke" Mardukas (Charles Grodin) is a sensitive accountant who embezzled $ 15 million from the Mob, gave it to charity and then jumped bail. Jack's in for a cool $ 100,000 if he can deliver The Duke from New York to L.A. on time. And alive. Sounds like just another Midnight Run (a piece of cake in bounty hunter slang), but it turns into a cross-country chase. The FBI is after The Duke to testify – the Mob is after him for revenge – and Walsh is after him to just shut up. If someone else doesn't do the job, the two unlikely partners may end up killing each other in this hilarious, action-filled blockbuster from producer-director Martin Brest (Beverly Hills Cop).

Pharma Bro Martin Shkreli Found Guilty Of Fraud, Can We Get That Wu-Tang Album?

The most hated pharma bro Martin Shkreli has been found guilty of fraud. Our first question—what’s the state of that one of a kind Wu-Tang Clan album he copped for $ 2,000,000, though

Reported the New York Times:

Martin Shkreli, 34, has confidently courted controversy in recent years, bulldozing his way into Wall Street and the drug industry, raising the price of a lifesaving drug by 5,000 percent overnight, boasting that he would outwit prosecutors in his federal fraud case, and live-streaming and tweeting throughout his five-week trial.

But on Friday, after five days of deliberations, jurors convicted him on three counts of fraud in federal court, and he now faces up to 20 years in prison on each of the first two counts, and up to five years on the final count.

Mr. Shkreli looked shaken as the judge read the verdict. But not long after, he appeared outside of court and returned to form, saying that he was “delighted, in many ways,” with the verdict. “This was a witch hunt of epic proportions, and maybe they found one or two broomsticks,” he said.

Yesterday (Aug. 4), Shkreli was live streaming soon after the verdict—and reportedly played parts of the aforementioned Once Upon A Time In Shaolin.

But seriously, can the the conditional release of that WTC album to fans worldwide be part of his punishment?

Someone write the judge a letter…

Martin Grant Resort 2018

Martin Grant has come up with a solution for keeping armpits dry during a heat wave: air-conditioned sleeves.
Puff sleeves, leg-of-mutton arms and dropped armholes were just some of the hot-weather hacks the designer deployed in his resort collection, which featured breezy drawstring-collared blouses and cool djellaba styles that worked equally well for the beach and the city.
“I like the fact of mixing these ethnic influences with something that’s very clean and structured,” he said.
Grant worked with patterns including irregular stripes, dots and a coral-inspired print, the latter appearing on a belted black-and-white tunic dress. French workwear fabrics inspired a selection of outfits in light blue cotton poplin, including a wide-leg jumpsuit and a peasant blouse with puffed-up sleeves.
Eveningwear skewed toward Eighties styles, with items like cocktail dresses in mismatched polka dot patterns with major sleeve action. Grant also worked that voluminous shoulder into an emerald-green silk top that delivered climate control with a theatrical flourish.

"I love you,” he murmured as the wisps of light returned to his body. What he didn’t say was that his love came with a heavy price and life was never going to be the same again. Twenty six year old Ana Martin has a past she is trying to forget. When she meets Gabriel, she believes that she can finally leave her troubles behind her. But Gabriel has a secret… He may look human and be born of this world, but he is from an ancient race of empathic beings known as the Siis, a race that evolved millennia ago to a state of consciousness yet still take solid form to hide among us. When the homeless start dying at an abandoned Tannery, the police chalk it up to suicides. Ana knows different. The Siis have a secret, a past mistake they would rather forget, one that puts Ana in more danger than she can ever comprehend. Before long, she becomes a target for the Fae, once innocent children changed by the Siis thousands of years before. They are able to intensify and feed off the negative emotions of their prey, and are filled with malicious intent that has no bounds. Can Ana survive the world of the Siis? More importantly, can she do it with her mind still intact? Night of the Fae is the first book in the Ana Martin series, which follows Ana as she is drawn into the secret world of the Siis, an ancient race of empathic beings torn apart by war, treachery and the consequences of past actions. The second book in the series, THE HIDDEN LIGHT, is available on Kindle now. Excerpt from book: He crept towards me. A face of an innocent child, but with a smile of a beast, filled with sharpened teeth that glistened in the moonlight. His eyes narrowed. So much malice, so much need for death, not a glimmer of the child he had once been. The engraved dagger glinted in the moonlight, giving the silent promise of pain and torture. His voice cut through the air, harsh with venom, filled with centuries of bitterness, 'You killed Sheah!’ Full review off Shane Dunphy – "Boasting a likable, strongly realized heroine and a world that is at once fantastic and thrilling yet wholly believable, the Ana Martin series is one of those rare reading experiences that just draws you in and won't let you go until the final page is turned. Jenkins's Siis are deftly drawn: fighting, loving and laughing with emotion that leaps from the text, while her Fae are truly chilling: nightmare creations that bring a genuine shiver to the spine. Jenkins crosses genres with a sure touch, compressing mystery, the supernatural, romance and procedural crime into a genuinely compelling narrative. Ana Martin is a name that will certainly go down in the annals of not just fantasy literature, but of classic characters in general, and Lyneal Jenkins is, without doubt, a figure to watch in the world of publishing. Read Ana Martin now and find a universe you will want to return to again and again." Review by Amber . B (Freelance Editor) "Not often do I read a book that makes me feel like I actually became a part of it. When I can feel what the characters are feeling…well that is a book written by someone that can write. This is a book built in the present time, and shows how other "beings" live among us and the dangers that one woman faces as she becomes more involved in their world. The characters are well developed and the story grabs you immediately. It is creepy, emotional, and edgy. The best part? It is something new. I didn't feel like I've read this story before, like I do with many others in this genre. I would definitely recommend this book."

Surrounded by a buccaneer crew of British and Anzak technicians, three forty-foot semis and equipment that belongs on a launch pad, they range across the landscape, setting up and striking week after week, city after city. Up by afternoon and out by dawn. Not even time for a sound check.Engulfed by seas of fans, who slip through cracks in the walls and haunt them backstage, youthful Americans who will soon inherit this landscape. And close behind a special bus full of fans, winners in a be-in-a-Depeche-Mode-movie-contest trying to catch up with their idols. Talking Irrelevance and ‘Live (At The Time)’ With Demetri Martin

Demetri Martin presents another hour of his characteristic brilliant, offbeat observations in his first Netflix special, “Demetri Martin: Live (At the Time),” released on the streaming service Aug. 14.

This special was long overdue since we’ve heard little from the comedian since his sketch-variety show on Comedy Central, “Important Things with Demetri Martin,” ended in 2010. The Huffington Post got a chance to talk with Martin recently about his current writing process, delivering jokes vs. storytelling, and the importance of being irrelevant.

“Demetri Martin: Live (At The Time).” Were there any alt titles for the special?

Yeah, I had three or four. One was: “Beeswax or Pleasure.” I forgot the other ones. This one was my favorite. I’m drawn to generic titles. Generally, the jokes I like best are the most generic. I like doing things that are personal but, I don’t know, once I’m putting it out there — especially with me, and being what it is — if you don’t know when it was made then I think people have a better chance of watching it or it staying around than if it is a standalone thing. I don’t do topical material too much. So that solves that problem for me.

Just keep it evergreen.

I’ve heard comedy doesn’t age well. It’s pretty true. If I can give myself a little more shelf life then it feels like it’s worth it.

I don’t think I’m going to watch an old Bill Maher special because I’m not interested in hearing about George Bush Sr.’s presidency. And I think I would watch your special later on because it’s just more Demetri jokes.

You know, my latest struggle is that … it feels like more confessional, personal, anecdotal material seems to be what’s in vogue right now. With the Internet or social media, they’re putting out stories and stuff like that. And people respond and feel like they connect to the comedian. And while I’ve done those things, I’m just naturally driven to jokes. Just short jokes. I’ve come to accept that jokes are just what I’m naturally drawn to. I’ve told stories, but after telling it a couple times I become sick of telling that story, and sick of myself. I don’t want to talk about myself anymore. I’d rather talk about dogs or something.

A lot of comics tell stories, and most of the time I just want to hear funny jokes, leave, and feel good. You do that, and so does Dave Attel.

Yeah! I think it’s a deceptive trick. People are really good at telling stories and making them funny. And then people see that and go, “Oh, I’ll just tell my story. I got it now!” And it’s like, but you gotta be good at it though! Like anything else. It seems like it’s an easy way to fill time sometimes. Like “Oh, alright, I’ll go tell that story about going to a party and having to fart and holding it in for 20 minutes.” OK, yeah, sure, maybe we should all be quiet and listen to that story, but I don’t know; It just better be really interesting.

Relevance is temporary, but irrelevance is eternal.
Demetri Martin

How long did you prepare for this special?

I did 40 shows between November and March. I would just go out for a few weekends in a row. Because my jokes aren’t long, I gotta write a lot of them to fill a full headlining act. It’s a little tiring, even if the show is going well.

The nice thing about jokes is they feel like objects. I have a bunch of them in my notebook. I just have a bunch of keywords in there. As opposed to stories, I’ll just go tell these 30 jokes. The most exciting is having a pile of jokes that I haven’t said before. I always have a hunch but I never know how they’ll do. And then I tell them and then, silence. And it’s like, “Really?”

Do you find you write better on the road or at your house drinking coffee?

When I started, it was fun because they would just come to me and I’d write them down in my notebook when they came. But when it became a job, I realized I couldn’t wait around anymore. Planes are good because I’ll say, “OK, I’ll write 100 jokes between here and NYC/LA. No matter if they’re good.”

So now, I said, every morning I’ll write one page of jokes. It might sound stupid but I have a couple typewriters that have really helped. I have computers like everybody else. But sometimes I feel like I’m living too much of my life in Microsoft Word. Just starting a new document, save as – the f**king title. I’m happy for the convenience. But it was a weird revelation to put a piece of paper into a typewriter and then write a page and then be like, I HAVE IT! I didn’t have to worry about toner or the wireless connection to the printer or anything. So instead of taking a vitamin, I just take a typewriter out, put a paper in, and write to the bottom, and then put them in a binder. Theoretically, at the end of the year, I should have a new hour of one-liners.

That’s amazing. You could sell those pages to superfans, or at least scan them and make a book of them. Everybody would buy that.

It would be interesting, especially for when I’m gone. Like, I wont be embarrassed when I’m gone and I can just give the binder to somebody to do something with them.

But I will say whether I’m working on a book idea or drawings or stand-up jokes. There is something liberating about finding a rhythm and working on the process. Whether the result is in a book or stand-up special. It helps me to not focus on the results. Because it’s frustrating, there are things out of my control. A flight is late, the crowd is pissed cause they had to wait, whatever. But the process, things can happen, but it’s easier to control. There’s something so reassuring about it. It’s what I love about the job of comedy. It’s your relationship to the work. Even though it’s dumb jokes, most of them.

I feel like the people who stick around are the people that would do it just to do it. Like, you put them in a cave and they naturally make comedy in a cave.

I think you’re right. Another one of my hangups. Probably because of the Internet and everybody knowing what people are talking about. When I was a kid, I wasn’t aware of comedy being directly relevant. It just seemed like they were being funny to be funny. And if they said something more, that’s great. But now it seems like there’s a burden or an expectation to be relevant. I always joke with my friends that I’m one of the least relevant comedians you’re going to find. Not in a self-deprecating way. I really am just drawn to borderline pointless things. And I’ve come to accept it that there’s not going to be a big message, at least not in my stand-up. But there is still something valuable to me in trying to think a certain way or to deconstruct the simple experiences we all go through.

I think the more you try to be relevant, the more you become the chase. If you aren’t chasing it, you are then the newsmaker and the thing people are talking about.

Yeah, the way I think about it is: Relevance is temporary, but irrelevance is eternal.

That’s great. For this special, you did stand up and then guitar. I hope that doesn’t mean that you’re done with projections or live drawings.

No! For a lot of the tour I had new drawings. But I decided, ya know, I’ve never done a special that’s just jokes. I was going to take out the guitar too because where I started was just standing and telling jokes. But I liked the chunk with the guitar so I left it in. I think the next time is going to have stuff like drawings.

Awesome. In this special, was the death riff [where Martin was met with silence after an improvised death-related quip and responded with, “Uh oh, too real”] real?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, I joke around sometimes that for some reason I end up writing a lot of death jokes and fart jokes. And when I make a special, I go, “All right, pick three or four death jokes and two or three of your favorite fart jokes.” I left it in there cause it was honest.

You had a couple in there.

I thought I could clean it up a little but I thought it added more life to it. It’s always interesting doing something for TV because it’s a different experience for the viewer than being in the room. My live shows have much more improvisation in it. It’s harder to do that for TV. For some reason, when you’re watching somebody improvise, like watching the audience watching it, it just loses the magic. But when you’re in the room, it’s just the best. I wanted to put it in so the audience could get a flavor of the live show. But I didn’t want to hurt the quality of the broadcast.

What was the origin of the couch joke?

That was an older one. Over the years, I write jokes in my notebook. The typewriter thing is new. Now I have a treadmill desk. Most of my earlier stuff was just while I was walking around NYC. I live in California now so I don’t have that luxury. So that one was probably on my treadmill.

My favorite joke in this special was “Jesus was the first scarecrow.” Was that a walk-around joke?

It was. That was one like, “How have I not thought of that before?” Sometimes I tag that joke with, “That’s not a religious joke, that’s a bird perception joke.”

I really feel that way about it. Of course I’m getting blowback. I feel like I’m one of the most tame comedians. You can look at my whole body of work and my hit rate is pretty low. This is an era of outrage. And my father was a priest. I was an altar boy until I went to college. I grew up in the Greek Orthodox Church. I think I’m a good person. I haven’t killed anybody. But it’s still a problem for some people. I haven’t gotten too much blowback. But you can’t help but feel like, “Hey, I haven’t been sacrilegious!” And I like that joke too. It’s very economical.

Going off topic, Jon Stewart is gone. How did you deal with that?

It seemed like he finally got a chance to get out of that calendar. It’s a year-round thing. No summer break. Just hiatuses. And the years fly. And the amount of work that “The Daily Show” requires is so intense. Because they’re on that topical wheel. So to see Jon leave, I felt like he must be so relieved. And I guess when he got to shoot a movie and step off that treadmill, he could just hand in his project and do the next thing.

“Demetri Martin: Live (At That Time)” is available now on Netflix.

Frank Zappa's New York Halloween 1981 concerts were filmed Live at The Palladium. This 'thing' entitled "The Torture Never Stops" was created in its entirety by FZ from the original concert production and intended by the Artist as one of 3 Television Specials. This is the longest version of the three – the others, "You Are What You Is" and "Dumb All Over", having actually aired. Halloween was Frank Zappa's favorite holiday, and New York was the site of Frank Zappa Halloween concerts for years! The billion and a half airings by MTV of the concerts (non-edited) followed on closely from the release of the double album "You Are What You Is" in September of that year on Frank Zappa's own recently founded and thoroughly independent label, Barking Pumpkin. Much of the set list is drawn from that work. All Frank Zappa shows were unique experiences with Zappa on guitar and baton, leading his band on flights of improvisation and drawing ever more intense performances from them. "The Torture Never Stops" cements Zappa's reputation as one of the most innovative and challenging composers and performers of the 20th century. Line-up: Frank Zappa (guitar, vocal); Ray White (vocal, guitar); Tommy Mars (keyboards, vocal); Scott Thunes (bass, vocal); Chad Wackerman (drums); Ed Mann (percussion, vocal); Bobby Martin (keyboard, sax, vocal), Steve Vai (guitar, vocal).
