Philip Ayler Opens Melrose Avenue Shop-in-Shop, Readies for Trunk Shows

BOMBSHELL: Ayler Young’s buzzy line of bombers is set to go on tour.
Young’s Philip Ayler brand of bomber jackets, made in Los Angeles from rare fabrics he sources all over the world, opened a shop-in-shop inside Young’s Frank’s Chop Shop barbershop on Melrose Avenue. The designer repurposed the shop’s former pool table room, totaling about 250 square feet, for a jacket bar to showcase about 45 styles, many of which are exclusive to the Melrose location.

The space features a hand-painted houndstooth design on the walls in a nod to many of his jackets featuring the same print, black tile floors and an illuminated Philip Ayler sign.
The Melrose store, which is a longer-term location, will be followed by a series of pop-up trunk shows over the next three to four months in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Young said he is in the midst of organizing those events, which he hopes will build greater awareness of the brand.
He’s largely already cultivated a strong A-list following with his pieces seen on

Congers' target is a man who appeared in 1960 in a small town in the US, and who spawned a new religious movement which radically changed the world over the next few hundred years.

The groundbreaking novella that gave rise to science fiction’s original space hero, Buck Rogers. In 1927, World War I veteran Anthony Rogers is working for the American Radioactive Gas Corporation investigating strange phenomena in an abandoned coal mine when suddenly there’s a cave-in. Trapped in the mine and surrounded by radioactive gas, Rogers falls into a state of suspended animation . . . for nearly five hundred years. Waking in the year 2419, he first saves the beautiful Wilma Deering from attack and then discovers what has befallen his country: The United States has descended into chaos after Asian powers conquered the world with advanced weaponry centuries before. All that’s left are ragtag gangs battling for survival against their brutal overlords. But when Rogers shows them how to band together and fight for more than mere survival, he sparks a revolution that will decide the fate of the future world. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices. Philip Francis Nowlan (1888–1940) was an American science fiction writer. He began his career as a newspaper columnist, but eventually tried his hand at fiction. Nowlan’s first science fiction novella, Armageddon 2419 A.D. , introduced his famous astronaut hero Buck Rogers, who inspired a long-running comic strip and two television series. The character popularized the genre and influenced future generations of science fiction comics. Nowlan’s other works include The Airlords of Han and The Time Jumpers.

A little whimsy, now and then, makes for good balance. Theoretically, you could find this type of humor anywhere. But only a topflight science-fictionist, we thought, could have written this story, in just this way…. excerpt It was quite by accident I discovered this incredible invasion of Earth by lifeforms from another planet. As yet, I haven’t done anything about it; I can’t think of anything to do. I wrote to the Government, and they sent back a pamphlet on the repair and maintenance of frame houses. Anyhow, the whole thing is known; I’m not the first to discover it. Maybe it’s even under control. I was sitting in my easy-chair, idly turning the pages of a paperbacked book someone had left on the bus, when I came across the reference that first put me on the trail. For a moment I didn’t respond. It took some time for the full import to sink in. After I’d comprehended, it seemed odd I hadn’t noticed it right away. The reference was clearly to a nonhuman species of incredible properties, not indigenous to Earth. A species, I hasten to point out, customarily masquerading as ordinary human beings. Their disguise, however, became transparent in the face of the following observations by the author. It was at once obvious the author knew everything. Knew everything — and was taking it in his stride. The line (and I tremble remembering it even now) read: … his eyes slowly roved about the room. Vague chills assailed me. I tried to picture the eyes. Did they roll like dimes? The passage indicated not; they seemed to move through the air, not over the surface. Rather rapidly, apparently. No one in the story was surprised. That’s what tipped me off. No sign of amazement at such an outrageous thing. Later the matter was amplified.

By 2021, the World War had killed millions, driving entire species into extinction and sending mankind off-planet. Those who remained coveted any living creature, and for people who couldn't afford one, companies built incredibly realistic simulacrae: horses, birds, cats, sheep… They even built humans. Emigrants to Mars received androids so sophisticated it was impossible to tell them from true men or women. Fearful of the havoc these artificial humans could wreak, the government banned them from Earth. But when androids didn't want to be identified, they just blended in. Rick Deckard was an officially sanctioned bounty hunter whose job was to find rogue androids, and to "retire" them. But when cornered, androids tended to fight back, with deadly results. "[Dick] sees all the sparkling—and terrifying—possibilities…that other authors shy away from." —Paul Williams, Rolling Stone

It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some 20 years earlier the United States lost a war, and is now occupied jointly by Nazi Germany and Japan. This harrowing, Hugo Award-winning novel is the work that established Philip K. Dick as an innovator in science fiction while breaking the barrier between science fiction and the serious novel of ideas. In it Dick offers a haunting vision of history as a nightmare from which it may just be possible to awake.

Peterson, a crew member of a spaceship loading up with food animals on Mars, buys an enormous pig-like creature known as a "wub" from a native just before departure. Franco, his captain, is worried about the extra weight but seems more concerned about its taste, as his ship is short of food. However, after takeoff, the crew realizes that the wub is a very intelligent creature, capable of telepathy and maybe even mind control. Peterson and the wub spend time discussing mythological figures and the travels of Odysseus. Captain Franco, paranoid after an earlier confrontation with the Wub which left him paralyzed, bursts in and insists on killing and eating the wub. The crew becomes very much opposed to killing the sensitive creature after it makes a plea for understanding, but Franco still makes a meal out of him. At the dinner table, Captain Franco apologises for the "interruption" and resumes the earlier conversation Peterson had been having with the Wub – which has possessed the Captain's body. On each page, this book contains text and audio. Basically, the audio is played automatically. However, in the case of a scroll mode, it is played manually.

Queen Elizabeth’s 94-Year-Old Husband Philip Caught Swearing At Photographer

LONDON, July 10 (Reuters) – Prince Philip, the 94-year-old husband of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth well-known for occasional verbal gaffes, was caught on camera swearing at a photographer on Friday, British media reported.

At an event to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain between the Royal Air Force and the German Luftwaffe in 1940, TV footage showed an exasperated Philip appearing to lose his temper during a photocall.

“Just take the fucking picture,” news websites quoted him as saying to the photographer at the event in central London attended by son Prince Edward and grandson Prince William among others.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the incident.

Philip, the longest-serving consort in British history, has found himself in hot water before for gruff and unguarded remarks.

The former naval officer once told British students in China, “If you stay here much longer, you’ll be slitty-eyed,” and asked Aborigines in Australia if they still threw spears at each other. (Reporting by Michael Holden; editing by Andrew Roche)

Philip Roth To Appear On ‘The Colbert Report’

NEW YORK (AP) — Philip Roth, one of the world’s eminent men of letters, is apparently confused about the meaning of the word “retirement.”

All it took to upend his latest farewell was an invitation from Stephen Colbert. Comedy Central spokesman Steve Albani told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the celebrated novelist has agreed to an “extended interview” in July for the cOlbert Book Club.

The 81-year-old Roth has more than once announced he has given his last interview and over the past two weeks has insisted he’s done with making public appearances. One promise to quit has been kept: He hasn’t released a new book since 2010.

Known for such works as “Portnoy’s Complaint” and the Pulitzer Prize-winning “American Pastoral,” Roth has rarely appeared on television and Colbert may not seem the most obvious candidate to lure him to the small screen. But the comedian and heir to David Letterman on CBS’ “Late Show” is widely respected in the literary community. He has been among the most popular speakers at BookExpo America, publishing’s annual national convention, and his many author interviews include a hilarious talk with Maurice Sendak that aired in 2012.

Colbert’s book club, the name spelled with an Oprah-esque capital O, has included segments on Ernest Hemingway and J.D. Salinger. According to Albani, the entire episode will be dedicated to Roth, whom he called an “iconic author.”
