Drake’s Producer 40 Responds To Drizzy Ghostwriting Allegations

Drake’s longtime producer and friend Noah “40” Shebib unleashes a statement in response to ghostwriting allegations.

Producer 40 Shebib Defends Drake, Doesn’t Directly Deny “10 Bands” Ghostwriting Allegations

(AllHipHop News) There are a lot of questions swirling around concerning whether Drake has used other artists to write his raps. The suspicion began when Meek Mill called out the OVO leader on Twitter. Then DJ Funkmaster Flex upped the ante by releasing a “10 Bands” reference track by alleged Drake ghostwriter Quentin Miller.

[ALSO READ: Funk Flex Releases Reference Track Of Quentin Miller Rapping Drake’s “10 Bands” (AUDIO)]

The leak featured Quentin rapping a near identical verse Drake used on the If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late cut. Despite what appears to be evidence Drizzy used rhymes written by Que, longtime Drake producer Noah “40” Shebib is defending his partner’s pen game.

40 posted several tweets explaining Drake’s musical skills and writing abilities. One tweet reads, “You’re smokin that sh*t you say you selling if you think someone wrote that sh*t.”

But it was not clear if that tweet was addressing Drake’s music in general or a specific song, so it should be noted the Toronto board master never directly denied Drake lifted his “10 Bands” verse from Que.

Transphobic Comments From ‘Friday Night Lights’ Producer Pale In Comparison To Caitlyn Jenner’s Courage

It’s inevitable.

You can be an Olympian, a cover model and a fashion icon, but if you’re transgender, the criticism will come.

Caitlyn Jenner strode on stage at the 2015 ESPY Awards on Wednesday to accept the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. It was her first public appearance since she announced her widely lauded transition to the world in an interview with Diane Sawyer earlier this year. She gave an impassioned speech, with a simple request for viewers and her fellow athletes — show trans people your respect.

Enter Peter Berg, director of the 2004 film “Friday Night Lights” and creator of the Emmy-winning series of the same name. Berg took to Instagram early Thursday to criticize the decision to select the athlete for the award, posting a photo mashup of Jenner with U.S. Army veteran Gregory D. Gadsonwho lost both of his legs to a roadside bomb. “One man traded 2 legs for the freedom of the other to trade 2 balls for 2 boobs,” the caption reads. Berg’s addition to the post consists of one word: “Yup.”

A photo posted by Peter Berg (@pberg44) on

The Huffington Post has reached out to Berg for comment.

The Arthur Ashe award “is meant to honor individuals whose contributions transcend sports through courageous action,” ESPN said in a statement when it was forced to address criticism of its selection. “We are proud to honor Caitlyn Jenner embracing her identity and doing so in a public way.”

Award nominations are controversial — some worthy nominees get snubbed and others overlooked. Individuals like Lauren Hill, the inspiring 19-year-old basketball player who died from brain cancer earlier this year, are equally deserving of praise and admiration.

But the criticism surrounding Jenner’s selection hasn’t been based on her athletic prowess, her activism or her courage. It’s based on deeply seeded transphobia perpetuated by those who focus on genitalia rather than gender identity — people who ask invasive personal questions that fuel dangerous tabloid voyeurism.

The world of sports is still a notoriously unaccepting place for many trans athletes. States like Virginia and North Carolina require students to play on teams based on the gender listed on their birth certificate, and no openly transgender competitor has ever participated in the Olympics, though they may be allowed to.

Jenner’s actions unequivocally transcend the nature of a sports landscape that’s still struggling to accept gay athletes, let alone transgender ones. Her bravery compelled a room of many of the world’s most celebrated athletes to give her a standing ovation.

“Trans people deserve something vital. They deserve your respect,” Jenner said at the event. “And from that respect comes a more compassionate community, a more empathetic society and a better world for all of us.”

The criticism may be inevitable now, but it won’t be for much longer. A better world, Caitlyn’s world, is right around the corner.

Take note, Mr. Berg.

UPDATE: 6:25 p.m. — Berg espoused support for Jenner and “trans people everywhere” in a Thursday evening Instagram post. He wrote that he’d intended for his original post to shed light on “our courageous returning war veterans, many of whom have sacrificed their bodies and mental health for our country.”

You can watch Caitlyn Jenner’s entire speech below.

Jerry Weintraub, Hollywood Producer Behind ‘Ocean’s Eleven,’ Dead At 77

NEW YORK (AP) — One of the last of the classic Hollywood showmen, Jerry Weintraub built his show business empire on a Rolodex and chutzpah.

The Brooklyn-born son of a Bronx jeweler, Weintraub rose from the mailroom of a talent agency to become a top concert promoter before shifting into a decades-long career as a top Hollywood producer. Along the way, Weintraub worked with the most famous of stars — Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, George Clooney, Brad Pitt — and was a close friend of former President George H.W. Bush. He relished his insider status, just as they savored the stories that eagerly poured out of him.

Weintraub, the dynamic producer and manager who pushed the career of John Denver and produced such hits movies as “Nashville,” ”Karate Kid” and “Ocean’s Eleven,” died Monday in Santa Barbara, California. He was 77. A publicist for Weintraub said he died of cardiac arrest.

“Jerry was an American original who earned his success by the sheer force of his instinct, drive, and larger-than-life personality,” said Bush, a longtime friend. “He had a passion for life, and throughout the ups and downs of his prolific career, it was clear just how much he loved show business.”

Weintraub failed in one of his most ambitious gambits. His attempt to found his own studio, Weintraub Entertainment Group, ended in bankruptcy after only three years. But his long career — very much alive at the time of his passing — was marked by savvy innovation (he was among the first to stage arena tours) and old-school class.

Weintraub had his choice lunch spots in Los Angeles, his desert home in Palm Springs and his favored places to moor his yacht off the French Riviera. A self-made man, he fashioned himself in the mold of old Hollywood showman like Mike Todd, Cecil B. DeMille and P.T. Barnum. He titled his 2011 memoir: “When I Stop Talking, You’ll Know I’m Dead.”

At the time, he joked he might write another: “Dead, But Still Talking.”

“In the coming days there will be tributes about our friend Jerry Weintraub,” said Clooney, a star of the “Ocean’s” movies. “We’ll laugh at his great stories and applaud his accomplishments. And in the years to come, the stories and accomplishments will get better with age, just as Jerry would have wanted it. But not today. Today our friend died.”

One of Weintraub’s most recent successes was the 2013 Liberace drama “Behind the Candelabra.” After the studios passed, he took it to HBO, where it won 11 Emmys.

He left numerous projects behind, including the recently debuted HBO series “The Brink” with Jack Black, and an upcoming big-budget remake of “Tarzan.”

“If asked my philosophy, it would be simply this: Savor life, don’t press too hard, don’t worry too much. Or as the old-timers say, ‘Enjoy,'” he wrote his book. “But … I never could live by this philosophy and was, in fact, out working, hustling, trading, scheming, and making a buck as soon as I was old enough to leave my parents’ house.”

Growing up, Weintraub said he father, a successful gem salesman, taught him “only two things are important at the end of the week: how much you owe the bank and how much you have in it.”

Hired to work in the mailroom of the William Morris Agency, Weintraub then landed a job with Lew Wasserman’s MCA, where he worked as advance man for the agency’s stars.

His career as a promoter took a giant step in 1970 when after a lengthy courtship he persuaded Elvis Presley’s manager, Col. Tom Parker, to let him promote Presley concerts. It was at a time when Presley was beginning to do live shows after years of concentrating on movies.

Weintraub and partner Tom Hulett introduced such improvements as a modern sound system for Presley, an experience that propelled Weintraub into the top ranks of promoters.

Around the same time, Weintraub saw Denver at a small Greenwich Village nightclub and was overwhelmed by the mountaineer’s easy manner. He took on Denver as a client.

“He would be a test case for all my theories on selling and packaging, for everything I had learned since I left home,” Weintraub said.

After enormous success followed, Denver bought Weintraub a Rolls-Royce as a thank-you gift. Weintraub said, “I couldn’t help thinking that it wasn’t too long ago that neither of us had bus fare.”

Weintraub produced a dozen Denver musical specials on television — winning an Emmy for one of them — and the hit 1977 movie “Oh, God!” It starred George Burns as God and Denver as the young grocer whom God approaches to spread his message.

He also set up successful tours for Sinatra and produced the television special “Sinatra — the Main Event,” as well as joint appearances with Denver. Among other musicians Weintraub worked with were Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond and the Beach Boys.

After his first marriage (which resulted in a son, Michael), Weintraub married torch singer Jane Morgan in 1965. They had three adopted children: Julie, Jamie and Jordy. The pair separated but never divorced.

Weintraub’s emphasis shifted to movies with 1975’s “Nashville,” Robert Altman’s acclaimed comedy-drama of American life as seen through the eyes of 24 characters in and around the country music business. It landed five Oscar nominations, including best picture.

In his memoir, Weintraub said he didn’t understand the complicated script, but he was eager to produce it because “Altman did, and it was Altman who was going to make the movie.”

Weintraub went on to produce such notable films as Barry Levinson’s “Diner,” ”All Night Long,” ”The Karate Kid,” and William Friedkin’s controversial, gay-themed “Cruising.”

He became chief of United Artists in 1985 but was ousted after just five months amid reports of disagreements with financier Kirk Kerkorian. He later reached a settlement with the company.

In 1987, he attempted to establish his own studio, WEG, but it went belly up in 1990 after a string of flops including “My Stepmother Is an Alien.”

“I had, in a sense, promoted myself out of the job I always wanted, which was telling stories, producing,” he wrote in his memoir. “(The films) now were being made for me instead of by me.”

After the WEG bankruptcy, Weintraub continued producing, putting out such films as “Vegas Vacation” and “Ocean’s Eleven” and its starry sequels. He remade “The Karate Kid” in 2010, setting the project up in China and starring the young Jaden Smith, Will Smith’s son. Weintraub said he “questioned it 150,000 times” before backing it.

Starting in the 1980s, Weintraub became known as one of the Republican Party’s most loyal supporters in Hollywood. He had been close to Bush years before he became president, and in 1991, he hosted a star-studded party for the president at his Malibu home and played golf with Bush and former President Ronald Reagan.

Robert Chartoff, Oscar-Winning Producer Of ‘Rocky,’ ‘Raging Bull’ Dead At 81

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) — Robert Chartoff, the Oscar-winning movie producer behind the boxing classics “Rocky” and “Raging Bull,” died Wednesday, associates said. He was 81.

Chartoff died at his home in Santa Monica, California, Lynn Hendee, the president of his company, Chartoff Productions. He had been suffering from pancreatic cancer. Born in Depression-era New York City, Chartoff had been a movie producer for nearly a decade when he found his career-defining hit in 1976’s “Rocky,” the small-budget movie starring and written by Sylvester Stallone that became a blockbuster and won three Academy Awards including best picture.

Chartoff and his partner Irwin Winkler would go on to produce all seven movies in the “Rocky” series, including the forthcoming “Creed,” which is in post-production and due for release later this year.

He kept working into his late 70s and 80s, his recent credits including 2013’s “Ender’s Game” with Harrison Ford and 2014’s “The Gambler” with Mark Wahlberg.

He also produced a different, darker take on boxing in the Martin Scorcese-directed “Raging Bull” in 1980.

His other credits included 1983’s “The Right Stuff,” which won four Oscars, and 1969’s “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” a cult hit starring Jane Fonda.

He had five children with three different wives, and is survived by his current wife jenny Weyman.

Artist Spotlight With Music Producer And Performer MartyParty

2015-05-03-1430633876-7686116-MartyParty3.png

Veteran producer Martin Folb, more famously known as MartyParty, has been traversing sonic landscapes on an endless quest to create what he calls “purple music.” Hailing from South Africa but finding a home in Miami, Florida, MartyParty has lived multiple lives, all of them working together in perfect symbiosis. I had the opportunity to ask Folb a few questions on the birth of trap music, being a software engineer in the Silicon Valley, the politics of South Africa, lifestyle choices, his upcoming album, and even his favorite color and animal (which happen to be red and squirrels).

Still visiting South Africa every so often, his relationship with the country is lifelong as you cannot change where you come from. Folb discussed how South Africa went through a social revolution in the 1980s and on February 2, 1992, voters democratically elected for political reversal. He poignantly explained:

“The ridiculously violent times had finally found balance after a decade of racial, economic and social imbalance. Along with the release of Nelson Mandela, South Africa became a free standing Republic. It has since completely rewritten its constitution. When I left in 1994, South Africa was well on the road to recovery.

It is now a Democracy whereby every citizen is encouraged to vote. At present, South Africans are dealing with an influx of immigrants from other African nations. The change in South Africa and its people could teach the rest of the world a lesson in anti-discrimination. Ironically, I am now an American citizen. However, even though it is 2015, I notice similar themes develop and manifest elsewhere in the world. It feels like déjà vu.”

After graduating with a Computer Science degree in South Africa, he was quickly recruited to Silicon Valley and began working with a start up company as a software engineer. He immigrated to San Francisco in 1994 with a brain that was primped and primed for the booming technological era. The tumultuous world of Silicon Valley eventually wore on Folbs’ mind, body, and soul. In 2005, he parted ways with his life as a software engineer, thankful for the knowledge he had gained but ready to begin a new chapter.

In need of some soul cleansing, he left his old life to delve into the beautiful and abundant lands of Costa Rica. It was there, in the enchanting town of Santa Teresa, that MartyParty was born. He fell in love with the art of surfing, patiently disciplining and training his body to coexist with the power of the Pacific Ocean. The riches of Costa Rica radiate with inspiration. Its divine beaches and majestic jungles are conductors of cosmic energy, charging the souls of its land with Pura Vida. Immersed in the peace and simplicity of equatorial life, Folb began experimenting with music production, utilizing his finely tuned expertise in software engineering. “The discipline of software design, coding and general computer knowledge transferred very cleanly into computer music design and coding,” he says. “Luckily I had the talent and musical skills to make my music creative and pleasing.”

2015-05-03-1430632161-2208314-MartyParty2.jpg

MartyParty’s signature sound flavorfully blends and bends genres such as hip hop, trap, club, dance, bass, and many more. One of the forefather’s of trap music, he began experimenting early on with hip hop beats and instrumentals creating a sound that was truly ahead of its time:

“I learned Ableton Live and started composing hip hop beats and, using melody and syncopation, tried to make the beat stand alone. The result was the MartyParty sound. Basically I sang or rapped with synthesized leads instead of vocals. The result of that first exercise made its way into my first releases as well as PANTyRAiD’s The Sauce, which is arguably the first trap record ever officially released.”

In addition to being an ex-software engineer turned world-famous producer and performer, Folb’s healthy lifestyle is also garnering attention from his followers. While finding healthy food choices on the road can be a challenge, at home, he endeavors to fuel himself with only the best ingredients. Raised in a culture devoid of fast food, processed food, and GMOs, Folb explained, “My diet since I was a child consisted of a garden to plate style of living, which was the norm out on the farm. Today, I am into the joy of health and vitality. It is one of my absolute passions.” His love for cooking and creating healthy recipes inspired a SnapChat tutorial (which now has 700+ followers) where he shares his creative culinary experiences with fans and healthy living enthusiasts. Another shining facet of the multi-faceted gem that is MartyParty.

“I just think cooking and mixing music are the same thing. It’s about experimentation, practice, creativity and avoiding what has been done before. I invent music and I invent recipes. They are both just channels of expression and I am so lucky and grateful to live in a time we can share these moments so easily.”

The term healthy lifestyle holds many meanings depending on the life who is living it. Another part of Folb’s health-conscious lifestyle is the sacrament of the sacred herb. With the Green Rush upon us, cannabis is finally being seen by the masses as a blessing instead of a Schedule 1 drug. As a musician in the electronic music scene, vices are difficult, if not impossible, to avoid. While some can be harmful to the body and psyche, others can enhance it. Finding this balance is often a blurred line between brilliance and darkness. When I asked Folb of his relationship with the seductive powers of substances, he eloquently answered:

“The DJ life is full of vice. Yes, when the moment is right and the people are right, I love a little synthetic therapy. However, I am way more into the joy of health and vitality. It has taken years of discipline and moderation to keep the ship straight but I’m proud to say I have it down.”

Even with so much experience already behind him, he has no intention of slowing down. Like the orbit of the moon, his momentum is steady and concise, powerful and unyielding. He will be releasing his 6th studio concept album titled RAW in June. “Music is a life long voyage of practice and experimentation, finding your sound, training your ears,” states Folb. RAW will be an exemplary manifestation of the spirit and mind of MartyParty. After hours of producing and months of fine-tuning, RAW promises to be a collection of sounds that can only be described as purple music. A specimen of profound capabilities and erudite perspectives, Martin Folb is one of the brightest colors in the human rainbow.

“I am so lucky to be able to translate emotion and thought into sound and have it translate back into emotion and thought for the listener — magic.” – Martin Folb

A Film Producer and a Comedy Writer Walk Into a Bar…

My latest lifelong dream is to get paid for being hilarious, be it stand-up or a well-written film or television show. Around the time of this revelation, one of my “real writer friends” — who was actually making quite a name for himself in screenwriting (the real, paid kind of screenwriting) — mentioned an up and coming producer who was making a name for herself in film and suggested that she would be an excellent person to speak to in regards to learning everything about the process of getting my little ideas onto the big screen. He was also very impressed by how determined she was to carve her own path in this very competitive industry, and suggested I join forces with her when I am ready to transition into the development phase.

As fate would have it, this new connection wound up being Marlinda Walcott — an old friend of mine from high school whom I had no clue was now working professionally in film. I quickly found out that Marlinda was the real deal, holding legitimate producer roles in feature films such as the psychological thriller Victims, starting Katherine Isabell and Christian Campbell and indie hits Goon, starring Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel, Eugene Levey and Liev Schriber and romantic comedy What If/The F-Word starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan. She has also worked on video game franchise hits such as Silent Hill: Resolution and Resident Evil: Retribution, both films having combined, worldwide gross of over $ 300 million. She was, in fact, the real deal.

2015-02-23-unnamed1.jpg

I am certain that there are a few comedy writers out there who would love to see their name in the credits, but have no idea how to get there. In the spirit of sharing, here are a few highlights from my many conversations with producer Marlinda Walcott in hopes of helping my fellow aspiring screenwriters and producers.

Me: Over the past decade, you’ve held a producing role in hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of film and television projects. At what point in your life did you decide that this was what you wanted to do for the rest of your life?

MW: Growing up, I always had a natural curiosity for how things worked. And watching films was no exception. I was constantly curious about how they picked the actors, or the cost of a scene, or how they picked that particular location. I remained constantly in awe of the filmmaking process. So it was in my early teens when I decided that I would be a part of making films, from conception to completion. I then spent the next few years immersing myself in every aspect of the behind the scenes world of production, from music videos to commercials and short films.

2015-02-23-unnamed2.jpg

Me: How does one transition from aspiring to successful when it comes to being a producer of both independent and studio projects?

MW: First and foremost, you need to find a project/story that you believe in something that will keep you going during the long and sometime tedious process that is making a movie. You must to be an extraordinary networker. The majority of the job is based on your relationship management skills and ability to talk to people and understand their individual creative needs. You must also possess an understanding of the intricate financial planning these projects require. No matter the budget, there is always a budget, and it is the producer’s job to stay within that budget and ultimately keep investors happy. Frivolous budgeting can and will ruin a project — I know of a few fantastic movies that didn’t make it into production because investors lost faith and pulled out.

Me: So basically sales savvy and good at money management equals a great producer?

MW: Yes, among many, many other things. Because managing the money means managing the expectations of the creative minds involved (director, writers, etc.). Staying within budget without compromising anyone vision is a delicate art. The producer’s responsibility is to offer creative suggestions to fill the void of a scene which can’t be shot due to budgetary constraints. However ultimately, the producer should plan accordingly in order to complete the project within budget while not compromising the overall creative vision. It is quite the delicate task.

Me: And now for the predictable question: being a woman in a male-dominated world, yadda yadda, you know where I’m going with this.

MW: There is definitely no shortage of horror stories in this industry pertaining to the treatment of women on set. I’m not going to say I’ve never been hit on inappropriately or not taken seriously because I’m a female, however for the most part I’ve been lucky to have been considered a colleague by some of the industry’s best. It’s important for women getting into production to really get to know the craft and remain confident and firm. I’ve been able to produce movies under budget numerous times, and having a reputation for achieving such a task will open doors. But like I said, there is a mountain of responsibility involved with no room for oversight, so male or female you need to be confident and resourceful at every point in the project.

Me: Any last words for aspiring filmmakers?

MW: Just start. Follow through on your ideas and learn by doing. And never hesitate to seek out those who have accomplished what you are trying to do and soak up their knowledge.

2015-02-23-unnamed3.jpg

So there you have it. I absolutely urge anyone looking to try their hand at
filmmaking to seek out an accomplished professional, like I did, to learn the intricacies of the craft. Because while you may think you can just figure it all out, production is a delicate art that cannot be approached casually.

Producer Gary Janetti Talks New PBS Sitcom Vicious and LGBT Issues (AUDIO)

2014-07-02-HuffVicious.jpgThis week I talked with writer/producer Gary Janetti (Will & Grace, Family Guy) about his fabulous new PBS sitcom Vicious. Legendary openly gay actors Sir Derek Jacobi and Sir Ian McKellen play Stuart and Freddie, partners who have lived together in their central-London flat for nearly 50 years. Behind the façade of hilariously snide remarks regarding each other’s age, appearance and flaws, a deep love for one another is revealed. This groundbreaking sitcom tells the story of an older gay couple and their longtime circle of friends as they struggle to maintain their visibility and significance in our youth-oriented world. The ensemble cast also includes their feisty best friend Violet, played by Frances de la Tour, and Ash, played by Iwan Rheon, their young, impressionable upstairs neighbor.

I talked with Janetti about taking on relevant aging issues in this comedic format, and about his spin on LGBT equality. When asked what he would like to accomplish with this show, he stated:

What I want to accomplish is not only that this is a gay couple — the fact that they were gay was always besides the point — it’s also a couple of a certain age. We don’t see couples in their 70s together not as an archon to the young couple on the show but as the main focus of the show. And their world is also populated by people around the same age as them, and they are the people we follow. We’re inside their world, and it’s unusual, and I don’t think it should be unusual. There was something about that I felt really good about accomplishing. Also that they were a gay couple of a certain age and within the gay community. These are men in their 70s, and they have been clearly out, certainly to each other and their closest group of friends, for 50 years. What does that mean 50 years ago? How difficult was it to be out 50 years ago, to live with another man at that time, in the 1960s? And I think these people and those stories we don’t often hear a lot of, they’re heroic, to give center stage to a couple that might sometimes seem anonymous, these couples that you see at times on the subway, or walking down the street, or in a little restaurant, and you wonder what their life was like. This is an opportunity to kind of go inside, and for better or for worse, you see what this relationship is.
