Nine Line, Earnhardt to Support Veterans at Memorial Day Weekend Race

As a veteran-owned brand, Nine Line Apparel knows that Memorial Day means more than just barbecues and a day off from work.
So the Savannah, Ga.-based men’s and women’s label has teamed with Jeffrey Earnhardt, the fourth generation of race-car royalty, on a fund-raising campaign for the children of fallen U.S. service members.
From April 25 to May 9, Nine Line Apparel sold a special “Remember the Fallen” T-shirt on its web site and the $ 15,000 raised from that sale will be donated to the Angels of America’s Fallen organization.
On May 27 during the Coca-Cola 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, Earnhardt and Nine Line’s chief executive officer, retired Army captain Tyler Merritt, will present a check from that effort to the organization at the track.
“I’m excited to be partnered with Nine Line Apparel to salute our veterans and the active duty military that serve our great country,” Earnhardt said. “Nine Line is an incredible organization that’s owned and operated by veterans. They are everything I want to be associated with and I’m honored by this relationship.”
Nine Line came into contact with the charity after one of its employees, an Army veteran, committed suicide, an epidemic among former service members. In lieu of flowers,

NFL, NBA & MLB Players Form Like Voltron Against Race Baiting Comrade Trump

Donald Trump has managed to unify an influential group of people, against himself. Pro athletes from the NBA, NFL, MLB and more have formed like Voltron against Cheeto’s race-baiting antics.

It all started when at a rally in Alabama, the alt-POTUS, without mentioning his name, came for Colin Kaepernick. The moron in chief called any NFL protester a son of a b*tch (seriously).

This is where we mention the obvious pattern of Trump coming for Black people (see: The Central Park 5, Barack Obama, etc.). If this is where you saying something like “But Omarosa,” go have a seat.

Needless to say, players and even the NFL itself blasted Trump’s commentary.

Then the next day he was bored and decided to come for NBA players, specifically Steph Curry, for being hesitant to pay a visit to the White House. Trump rescinded the Golden State Warriors’ invite and has since proceeded to get burned by Steph Curry…

…burned by LeBron James

and burned by the team.

Over in the MLB, Bruce Maxwell of the Oakland Athletics became the first player to take a knee in protest during the National Anthem. Take note that he still has his hat over his heart, so he’s protesting anything BUT the flag.

Many were wondering if NFL players would stand up for themselves, or turn tail. While many of have made statements against Cheeto, the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars protested early this morning before their game in London. Even Ray Lewis participated, so you know it’s real.

But before we get all excited, the overqualified Colin Kaepernick still doesn’t have a job.

Peep more NFL players repping on the following pages.

Brandon Voss And ‘Drag Race’ Queens Come Together For Halloween 2015 Two-Night Event

There’s only one place that you can simultaneously catch some of your favorite queens from “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and see the most iconic stars in the world made out of wax — all on Halloween night.

New York City party promoter Brandon Voss is going all out this Halloween, with two events and two nights filled with “Drag Race” ladies and lots of surprises. The first event is the fourth annual “Night of the Living Drag” show at Liberty Theater, set in a post-apocalyptic NYC where only the queens have survived. The line-up is stacked, including Alyssa Edwards, Gia Gunn, Jujubee, Katya, Latrice Royal, Jinkx Monsoon, Laganja Estranja, Raja, Shangela, Willam and Violet Chachki,

The next night, Voss and his team move to Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum in Times Square for what is sure to be a Halloween night to remember. “Drag Race” champ Bianca del Rio will host this event, which will span all nine floors of the museum and including rides, Bianca del Rio’s Hollywood Horror show and a costume contest.

“Halloween is my favorite time of the year so I love to go all out,” Voss said in a statement. “This year’s parties will include all the tricks and treats that revelers have come to expect from my events. There will be massive decor installations, outlandish performers and, of course, a whole gaggle of frightfully fabulous celebrity guests.”

Interested in attending one of these two events? Head here for more information.

Mobb Deep Talks 50 Cent’s Grip On The Rap Game & Race Not Mattering (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) 50 Cent may be filing for bankruptcy, but the New Yorker’s current financial situation does not diminish his accomplishments as a Hip Hop star. Fellow Queens natives Mobb Deep spoke with Montreality about 50’s impact on the rap game.

[ALSO READ: 50 Cent Jokes About Filing For Bankruptcy (PHOTO)]

“I think [50 Cent] totally has a grip on the rap game, and he became super-uber rich off of it. So he already accomplished what he needed to,” said Havoc. “I’m sure that 50 could come to Montreal right now and perform in front of a sold out crowd. I don’t think that’s anything less than a grip. That is a real grip. He’s a superstar. He’s bigger than his music.”

The former G-Unit members were also asked what they feel is the biggest lie in the world. Havoc focused his answer on race relations, and Prodigy agreed with Hav’s statements.

“The biggest lie ever told is that skin color matters. That’s the biggest one of all time,” Havoc stated. “We all have the same heart, same blood. I could give a Jewish person my blood if he needed a transfusion if it matched. We’re all human.”

Donald Trump: The Great Race Baiter

DONALD TRUMP’S BEEN RACE-BAITING SINCE THE ‘80s

History is a hell of an indicator for future behavior.  Before Donald Trump spent his days arguing that Mexico was ‘sending people that have lots of problems’ to the United States and that they are ‘bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists’, he was busy taking out full-page ads calling for the death penalty to be brought back to New York so five Black and Latino teenagers could be executed.

The year was 1989; the horrific incident would be known as ‘The Central Park Jogger Case’; and the five boys charged with the brutal rape and attack on a white female investment banker were termed the Central Park Five.  For those unfamiliar with the intricate relationship between the police, politicians and the press (especially the NYC press corp), this case is perhaps the perfect example of how the marginalized can be easily demonized, maligned and convicted first in a court of public opinion – and later in criminal court.  As for the one and only Donald Trump, he was right in the middle of it all, and had no problem pompously sharing his two cents then, just as he is now.

“BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY.
BRING BACK OUR POLICE!”

That was the headline of the full-page, 600 word ad that ran in four major papers – The New York Times, The NY Post, The NY Daily News and NY Newsday.  Trump reportedly paid $ 85,000 for the ads at the time, and while calling for the death penalty to be reinstated, he wrote that the five accused teenagers should “be forced to suffer and, when they kill, they should be executed for their crimes.”  It’s important to note that while the victim, Trisha Meili, was severely beaten and brutally raped, she thankfully survived.  But not only was Trump rushing to have teens (aged 14 to 16) executed, he helped sell the narrative that these kids were guilty without a doubt despite the many inconsistencies present.

When the five – Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Kharey Wise and Raymond Santana Jr. – were arrested in 1989, they were held and interrogated for hours and hours by police without the presence of their parents or an attorney.  They eventually confessed according to police, but later recanted their confessions and have always maintained that they were coerced into making those statements.  Their confessions were inconsistent with one another, as well as inconsistent with the evidence but none of this seemed to matter to the sensationalist press corp and the powers-that-be.  As the media firestorm ensued, calling the boys a ‘roving gang’, a ‘wolfpack’, ‘park marauders’, and with front-page stories referring to their actions as ‘wilding’, Trump contributed to the lynch mob mentality with his ads.

In 1990, the five were convicted in two separate trials, and one of the boys, Kharey Wise, was tried as an adult (he was 16), and ended up serving 13 years in jail.  The other four served several years each.  In 2002, a convicted murderer and rapist, Matias Reyes, confessed to the horrific attack, and DNA evidence backed his confession (for a thorough accounting and analysis of this case, watch the documentary ‘The Central Park Five’ by Ken Burns and Sarah Burns).

The five were eventually exonerated, and they rightfully sued the City of New York.  The Bloomberg Administration fought against the suit, and it wasn’t until September of last year that a settlement of $ 41 million was finally reached with the five men who lost their childhoods and opportunities decades earlier.  The $ 41 million figure came out to roughly $ 1 million for each year served in prison (their combined time served).

Despite the fact that a man confessed to the crime (which DNA evidence backed), and despite the fact that the City settled with the five (which is in effect an admission of wrongdoing), Trump never once apologized for his rush to judgment, nor his concerted effort to portray Blacks and Latinos as vicious animals who raped and attacked innocent Whites, and deserved to be executed.  Instead, in true Donald Trump fashion, he was defiant following last year’s settlement and called it ‘the heist of the century”.

“The recipients must be laughing out loud at the stupidity of the City,” he wrote at the time.  “These young men do not exactly have the pasts of angels.”

If we were to look at Trump’s business dealings, his teenage antics, his failed marriages, his baggage and his dirty laundry, it’s safe to bet that he does not have the past of an angel.  Nobody does.  Only difference is, Trump had a chance to live his life and build his empire, while these five men lost their youth and continue to live with the stigma of that horrendous case all these years later.

As more and more corporations and businesses separate themselves from Trump because of his comments regarding Mexicans and immigrants, the Central Park Five and their families are likely thinking, it’s about time.

Amy Schumer Denies She Has A ‘Blind Spot’ About Race On Twitter

Amy Schumer took to Twitter Sunday morning to defend the way she treats race in her comedy.

“I am a comic,” Schumer wrote. “I will joke about things you like and I will joke about things you aren’t comfortable with.”

The post appears to be a response to a Guardian article published early Sunday morning that said Schumer has “a shockingly large blind spot around race” despite her large body of feminist work.

From The Guardian:

“Schumer’s stand-up repeatedly delves into racial territory tactlessly and with no apparent larger point. Her standup special features jokes like “Nothing works 100% of the time, except Mexicans” and much of her character’s dumb slut persona is predicated on the fact that the men she sleeps with are people of colour. “I used to date Latino guys,” she says in an older stand-up routine. “Now I prefer consensual.”

Schumer’s response didn’t mention the Guardian article directly, but said: “You can call it a ‘blind spot for racism’ or ‘lazy’ but you are wrong.”

The Guardian isn’t the first to take issue with the way the comic approaches race. A Daily Dot article published last week made similar claims. Schumer also drew criticism for a joke she made about “Gone Girl” and Latinas while hosting the 2015 MTV Movie Awards in April.

Conservative Democrat Baron Hill Rebrands Himself As Pro-Marriage Equality In Indiana Senate Race

WASHINGTON — Indiana Democratic Senate candidate Baron Hill is casting himself as a champion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, in an attempt to shift away from the anti-marriage equality image he had during his previous stint in Congress.

“Marriage equality is especially close to my own heart,” said Hill in an email to supporters Thursday. “In 2004, I voted against the Constitutional Amendment banning marriage equality. I’m proud of Hoosiers who are fighting to make sure our friends and neighbors are guaranteed equal rights.”

“And any day now,” he added, “the U.S. Supreme Court will rule on whether or not the right to marry is a fundamental right for all Americans. This would be a huge and important step towards a world where acceptance is the norm.”

Hill was a member of the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2005 and 2007 to 2011. During his final years in Congress, the pro-LGBT Human Rights Campaign gave him a 70 percent rating on issues of equality. He supported the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, which banned LGBT members of the military from serving openly, but he was not one of the 121 Democrats to cosponsor legislation that would have repealed the federal government’s ban on same-sex marriage.

Though Hill did oppose amending the Constitution to ban same-sex marriage, he didn’t exactly champion the right for same-sex couples to wed either. In fact, he campaigned against it. During his 2006 re-election campaign, Hill ran an ad in which he said that “marriage between a man and woman is sacred.”

But support for same-sex marriage has become significantly more mainstream since Hill’s time in office. The Democratic Party didn’t even add it to its platform until 2012, the same year that President Barack Obama announced that his stance had “evolved” and he now backed marriage equality.

Hill’s email to supporters Thursday reflects the national shift on marriage equality, showing that it’s now an issue that even a more conservative Democrat feels safe running on.

The campaign did not return a request for comment on when Hill began supporting marriage equality but said in a statement that he had evolved on the issue over time. In addition to touting his opposition to the constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and support for DADT repeal, the campaign pointed out that he voted for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act — which would bar workplace discrimination against LGBT people — in 2010.

“Baron is proud to support marriage equality — bottom line, everyone deserves equal rights,” the statement read, adding, “Like many Americans, Baron’s personal views have continued to evolve on this issue and he feels strongly that no Hoosier should be made to feel less equal because of who they love.”

There has been some concern among Indiana Democrats that Hill might be vulnerable to a primary challenge from a candidate who is more vocal on LGBT equality, given his record.

He is currently the only Democratic candidate running for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.), but state Rep. Christina Hale (D), who has been more outspoken on LGBT rights, is also exploring a bid. On the Republican side, Rep. Marlin Stutzman and former Indiana GOP chair Eric Holcomb have declared campaigns.

LGBT equality has been a hot topic in Indiana since Gov. Mike Pence (R) signed a so-called religious freedom law that could have allowed businesses to deny service to same-sex couples. After significant national backlash, Pence signed a revised version of the measure.

Matt Lauer’s Interview with Rachel Dolezal Shows Why It’s So Hard to Talk About Race in America

Rachel Dolezal today show matt lauer

Yesterday Rachel Dolezals parents appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America and suggested that their estranged daughter was immersed in some sort of full-bore identity crisis and in need of help. Based on what we had read about her so far, it seemed likely that they were right about Dolezal, the former head of the Spokane chapter of the NAACP who stepped down yesterday after being outed as a Caucasian woman posing as a light-skinned black woman.

Yet when Dolezal appeared this morning on the Today show—her skin heavily bronzed, her hair worn in a sort of loose Afro, her facial features almost the carbon copy of her mother’s—she came across as composed, measured, in control of her own story, and, though this feels crazy to admit, sane.

As Matt Lauer questioned her about the ways, over the years, that she has misrepresented herself, encouraging the world to make faulty assumptions about her background, she repeatedly towed the same line: I identify as black, other people are uncomfortable with that, but it’s what’s in my heart that matters and it’s the experience I’m living that’s truly important.

What struck me most about Dolezal was her unwillingness (granted, it’s sometimes infuriating) to concede even a smidge to Lauer’s worldview, even as he pushed her further and further to the brink with questions intended to provoke. Nodding, occasionally smiling, Dolezal refused to take the bait. They seemed to be talking past each other, having two completely different conversations about race in America. Each time Lauer attempted to pin her down, Dolezal pivoted, scooting out from under his questions, reframing the conflict in her own words, using a very different framework of language and identity than the one we’re accustomed to or comfortable with.

For Dolezal, words slither and slip, their meanings unfixed and mutable. Language, she seemed to say, ought to serve a higher purpose, address emotional truths rather than physical ones. Her register was half academic—some sort of post-structuralist understanding of signifiers and signs and the gulf that lies between them—and half Free to Be . . . You and Me–era political correctness: I’m just living my own truth, she seemed to suggest. Why can’t you all get onboard with that?

Why did she represent Albert Wilkerson, a black man, as her father, when her actual father is a white man? “We connected on a very intimate level as family. Albert Wilkerson is my dad. Any man can be a father,” she explained. “Not every man can be a dad.” How can she, a white woman, be the mother of a black son? “He said, ‘You’re my real mom.’ And he’s in high school, and for that to be something that is plausible, I certainly can’t be seen as white and be Izaiah’s mom.”

It never quite tracks, but it’s also clear that Dolezal is living according to a set of rules that make perfect sense to her. “Are you an African-American woman?” Lauer asked at the beginning of the interview, getting down to brass tacks. “I identify as black,” she said with a politic smile, and the precision of that answer—“black” not “African-American”—feels very deliberate. Later, he asked her why, when she sued Howard University in 2002, she identified herself as a white woman. “The reasons for my full tuition scholarship being removed and my TA position as well were that ‘other people needed opportunities, and you probably have white relatives that can afford to help you with your tuition.’ And I thought that was an injustice.” Lauer was correct to point out the hypocrisy in this flip-flop, but Dolezal doesn’t see it as a problem; language bends, labels shift, but as long as the cause is righteous, what’s the big deal?

Refusing to engage when others try to define her is a trend for Dolezal. When did you start deceiving people? Lauer asked. “I was actually identified when I was doing human rights work in North Idaho as first transracial,” she replied. “Then when some of the opposition to some of the human rights work I was doing came forward, the next newspaper article identified me as being a biracial woman. And then, the next article, when there were actually burglaries, nooses, etc., was: This is happening to a black woman. And I never corrected that.” Why not, Lauer wondered, when you knew it wasn’t true? “Because it’s more complex than being true or false,” Dolezal replied. The point is clear: Whenever possible, our culture defaults to black or white, and the words we might sub in—biracial, or even the controversial term transracial—don’t quite do the job.

Watching this uncomfortable, disjointed conversation did not clear up for me whether Rachel Dolezal is truly sane or unhinged but well media-trained. It didn’t even really help me understand whether her choices are utterly offensive, deliberately deceitful, or weirdly enlightened. What it did make crystal clear is the fact that the vocabulary we currently possess to discuss race is bizarrely inadequate. In an America in which all other identities have become fluid, in which the spectrum of sexuality is a given and class mobility, at least in theory, is an essential tenet of our national identity, race remains the one thing we continue to see as fixed, binary.

It’s peach crayon versus brown crayon, as Dolezal reminds us, referring to drawing a self-portrait at age five. It’s black versus white, a comically elementary set of terms to throw at what is clearly a very tangled knot.

First Freedom Tower Stair Race To Help Build 200 Homes For Vets With Disabilities

NEW YORK (AP) — The first stair-climb race at One World Trade Center — the nation’s tallest building — will raise money for military veterans struggling with combat-linked disabilities, two foundations formed after the 9/11 attacks announced Monday.

Officials of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Captain Billy Burke Foundation detailed plans for the athletic event at Burke’s firehouse, Engine Company 21 in midtown Manhattan. Burke lost his life on 9/11 along with Firefighter Stephen Siller from Squad 1 in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Proceeds from the May 17 tower climb will support service members who’ve been catastrophically injured in war and help educate children who’ve lost a parent. The money also will help build 200 new homes for veterans with the worst disabilities, mostly triple or quadruple amputees. About 40 houses have been completed.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Siller was off-duty when he ran with over 60 pounds of gear through the blocked-off Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center. “Our foundation couldn’t be more honored to be chosen to hold the first stair-climb event at One World Trade Center,” said his brother Frank Siller, foundation chairman and CEO.

There’s also a “virtual stair climb” — using elevators — for people who want to participate but are unable to handle the stairs.

Participation is limited to the first 1,000 people who register by May 10. They’ll all wear computerized chips that will record their finish time. The entry fee is $ 100, and there’s a $ 250 minimum fundraising requirement.

Sept. 11 first responders will lead the way into the building for the climb, which is to the 90th floor — 180 flights of stairs — of the 104-story building.

Burke led firefighters on the day two terrorist-hijacked planes pierced the twin towers.

His brother, Michael Burke, said Monday that even though Billy knew that the south tower had already fallen, he chose to remain behind to rescue two workers, one in a wheelchair.

When the captain was urged to leave, he responded, “‘this is my job, this is who I am.’ Then he went on and the tower collapsed,” said Burke, who stopped talking several times, his voice breaking.

“What he did that day should be inspiration for us to keep going,” the foundation board member said.

In May, as climbers reach the higher floors and their knees and backs “are killing them,” he said, “just think of the words of Captain William Burke to his men: ‘keep going, I’m right behind you.'”

Action Bronson & Azealia Banks Beef About Race [Photos]

Action Bronson and Azealia Banks got into a  good old-fashioned Twitter war today that involved Q-Tip, Solange Knowles, and Tyler the Creator, by default. To give a little back story, Banks has had her back up against the wall today because of her interview with Hot 97.

Since she made some interesting, and emotional points on Hot 97 talk, the talk about  race, and “cultural appropriation” trickled over into Twitterland. Bronson’s name was thrown into the conversation by way of a random tweet to Banks about “white people who can rap.”

The Queens rapper jumped on Banks for even mentioning his name, and everything got out of control from there. Banks called him a “tribute band” version of Ghostface Killah a “fat meatball,” and a myriad of other insults.

Bronson hit below the belt too. He mentioned melting off her “boy t*ts” and said she lacked  “sex appeal,” “talent”, and a fan base “outside Manchester, England”

That wasn’t even the end of it either. Q-Tip and Knowles were pulled in by Bronson’s tweet about “people” supporting Banks’s views, and  making her a “Civil Rights activist.”

He obviously got questioned about using the word “people,” but insists that it wasn’t about race.

Check some of the tweets in the gallery.
