Proud Women of Africa: Rainbow Girls

Co-authored by Nick Schönfeld.

I have a friend called Dagny Warmerdam whom I met during my time in Cape Town. Over the years Dagny has become one of the most important people in my life. We’ve been through so much together: stressful commercial shoots, an impromptu beached-whale rescue, and most recently spending a week with the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit (I’ll tell you more about that in another post). In 2011, while photographing our friend Philipa, we talked about what it was like growing up as a lesbian woman in Cape Town.

2016-02-02-1454404890-5716007-RainbowGirls_Group_JuliaGunther.jpg

Dagny told me that despite a constitution widely regarded as the most progressive in the world, and which supposedly safeguards women’s and children’s rights, the Rainbow Nation as South Africa is unofficially known, is home to high levels of violence against women and children. Your degree of sexual freedom is based on the color of your skin, and to which social group you belong. If you are white, being LGBTQ in South Africa is no different than in the US or UK: difficult at times, but a personal struggle for acceptance by family or friends. In poor and black communities being LGBTQ can mean exile, rape or even death.

2016-02-02-1454404916-77934-RainbowGirls_V_JuliaGunther.jpg

One thing in particular that Dagny said shocked me more than anything else. In South Africa, LGBTQ’s are subjected to the shocking practice of corrective rape: a truly awful hate crime in which the perpetrator tries to ‘cure’ the victim of his or her homosexuality. I couldn’t get my head around the fact that in a country I loved so much, corrective rape happens regularly, with possibly as many as ten new cases a week in Cape Town alone.

Months of phone calls and emails later, I found myself standing outside a town hall in Khayelitsha. Inside, something remarkable was happening: the 2012 Miss Lesbian Beauty Pageant. A celebration of lesbian beauty, right in the middle of Khayelitsha, a township in Cape Town infamous for its treatment of LGBTQ’s.

2016-02-02-1454404956-9814576-RainbowGirls_S_JuliaGunther.jpg

Most of the women I photographed for this series were participants in this pageant. The pride with which they strutted their stuff on the catwalk was incredibly moving and it inspired me to take the portraits you see here. They wanted to make a bold statement, in defiance of those who refused to accept them, and out in the open for all to see. They ignored the repressive attitudes that were meant to subjugate them, and instead, chose to celebrate who they were in full view of their community.

2016-02-02-1454404995-9902080-RainbowGirls_Terra_JuliaGunther.jpg

The Rainbow Girls opened my eyes to the raw and often contradictory world of sexual identity in South Africa. A world in which simply being who you are means living in constant fear. A world that is ripe for change. But more than anything, the Rainbow Girls showed me that being a black lesbian in South Africa takes real guts.

A Gay Dad Sounds Off On Why Mike Huckabee Is Choking On Those Rainbow Doritos

My sons love Doritos. Jesse is a Nachos Doritos guy, and Jason, always his own man, loves the Ranch flavored.

I love the It Gets Better Project. They have provided inspiration and tangible help for teens at risk for suicide. It is a cause that no one in their right mind could be against. Yes, Mike Huckabee, you can take that for all it’s worth — you’re an idiot.

The recent campaign in which Doritos sold bags of rainbow chips to raise money for the It Gets Better Project brought smiles across our household. The campaign went well and before we could get on the computer to order our special bag, it was over. Sold out.

Mike Huckabee, a financial wizard of the Bigotry Industry has stepped in to demonize the efforts however. Huckabee does this under the guise of being “Christian.” He claims that Christianity is important to him. Unfortunately, few have done so much harm to the true precepts of Christianity as has Mike Huckabee. I would go so far as to say that Huckabee is to the heart of Christ what Judas Iscariot was to Jesus. He betrays it with a kiss.

The Huckabee Hate Rainbow: No matter what Christian value he tramples, whether it is abuse of children, incest, dereliction of duty or feeding a rich man’s greed, Mike Huckabee is for it, as long as it is anti-gay.

A rich man donates to hate, Huckabee organizes a campaign to make him richer. A homophobe incest abuser is found out, Huckabee rationalizes away all he has done. A woman dishonors her office and tries to humiliate loving families, mocking them for wanting to be married, and there is Huckabee holding her hand in front of a stolen rock anthem. Now, Huckabee is attacking an organization that has saved the lives of thousands of teens. All of this done under the banner of “Christianity.” If you believe him, Huckabee press has gutted the soul of Christ of its love and compassion and replaced it with bigotry and homophobia.

“Meet your new sick partner,” Huckabee sends to Doritos, framing the It Gets Better Project as a “hate group.” As he does so, he tweets to his legion “Stand by me,” otherwise translated as “send money.”

How does Huckabee justify this categorization of an organization that is so profoundly good as being something so heinously bad? Two words: Dan Savage.

Dan Savage loathes Huckabee. Dan Savage is also famous for loathing Rick Santorum. Both those men, and others who have received Savage scorn deserve exactly what they got. Dan’s tactics are not gentle, nor are they the type that will be discussed at the family dinner table. Dan Savage is the LGBTQ version of Donald Rumsfield. He embraces “Shock and Awe.” He seeks to appall and disgust the card-carrying homophobes to their pearl-clutching cores. He succeeds.

Savage made a recording, not for the faint of heart, that turns a Savage/Huckabee handshake into a sexual chronicle would make even the most sexually free go “Ewww.” For the sexually repressed, it just makes their head explode. You can see what I meanhere. Of course, taking that piece of Savage’s work and equating it to what is being done at the It Gets Better Project, is like taking mainstream Christianity and comparing it to this.

Exploding heads are a good thing for Huckabee. He has long learned that when a homophobe gets irate, he or she goes for their wallet. So as Kim Davis no longer is of use to him, he has now taken aim at the corn chip.

As he does, so have I, in my own letter to Doritos.

Dear Doritos,

It was with great joy that my family and I saw your latest campaign “There is nothing BOLDER than being yourself” campaign. I am happy for your success and the contribution you have made to the It Gets Better Project.

That success is not without cost, obviously. You have earned the vitriol of the people of a certain mindset, particularly those who are followers of Mike Huckabee.

Huckabee has publicly addressed you and attempted to integrate your campaign with an attack made on him by Dan Savage. The two events are non-sequiturs.

While Dan Savage came up with the idea for the “It Gets Better” inspiration to save lives, his editorials and the It Gets Better Project organization are unrelated entities.

That Huckabee does not understand the Savage piece about him is irrelevant to your efforts. Huckabee missed Savage’s intent on the recording. Savage has an in-your-face X-rated style undisputedly. He sought to show that homophobic oppression is as vile and disgusting to families such as mine as descriptive sexual concepts are to Huckabee.

There is a big difference between the harm of Huckabee’s rhetoric and that of Savage, however. While Huckabee may be shocked at Savage’s tone and verbiage, Huckabee’s parents will not walk in finding him cutting himself or reaching for narcotics. Huckabee’s loved ones will not wake to find out that he had gotten up early that morning and stepped in front of a train.

The victims of Huckabee have done exactly those things, and it is to them that the It Gets Better Project makes its outreach.

So thank you for your small campaign. I am confident that the viral stir it has made within progressive circles will help drive your business up. The backlash you are getting from those on the other side will die down. As they write out their protests on their Apple devices, post them on Facebook, they will soon be informed that both those entities have been far more LGBT community progressive than Frito Lay has been able to be.

While this note is a “thank you” letter, I actually mean it to be a letter of request.

Eat your own chips. More specifically, please take your own campaign slogan to heart. You encourage the eaters of your limited run colored chips to be BOLD.

Please, Doritos, be bold yourself. Put your rainbow chips in wide circulation. Don’t just let this be a limited campaign for the benefit of social media and a single check to the It Gets Better Project.

Let this be a message that American families see on each trip to the grocery store. Let the teen who is contemplating suicide because they fear the homophobic reaction of the world around them, that Mike Huckabee would prefer they live in, see the chips that tell them they are not alone.

As Huckabee tries to hijack the narrative and choke us all with homophobia, grab it back, and take it to the next level.

Do it. Be BOLD.

Huckabee’s hate then won’t have a chance. The mass crunching on a global scale will drown it out as a new brand of love hits the scene… one with a hint of spice, cheese and a kicky chili flavor.

Police Cars Go Rainbow For Pride Celebration, Cops Serve And Protect In Style

These cops are fabulous!

For Brighton Pride last weekend, the Sussex police department got in the spirit by giving their service vehicles a full rainbow makeover.

About 160,000 people took to the streets of the southeast England city on Saturday for their 25th Pride parade, BBC reported, described by Brighton Pride director Paul Kemp as “a celebration [that] brings in a lot of people from all over the world.” This year’s event was especially exciting because of its 25th anniversary and a new parade route that went along the city’s seafront.

During the colorful parade, the Sussex police department encouraged people to take pictures with the decorated vehicles.

Though they certainly provided terrific photo ops, the Sussex police — above all –provided safety and support.

“This was an excellent opportunity to show our continued steadfast support for LGBT communities,” the department wrote on their Facebook page. “Pride is one of the biggest events that takes place in Brighton and Hove each year and Sussex Police play a large role in policing the event and ensuring that those attending are kept safe.”

Leading up to Saturday’s festivities, the Sussex police issued safety tips for the celebration, and during the parade, set up a booth staffed by officers giving out goodies.

This police squad is something to be proud of!

Oklahoma Run ‘N’ Gun Biathlon Use Rainbow Flag Target To Promote Event

The organizers of an Oklahoma biathlon have sparked the ire of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community come after using a rainbow flag as a shooting target in a Facebook post promoting their event.

A photograph which appeared on the official page for Oklahoma Run ‘n’ Gun shows two gun-holding men flanking a rainbow flag, KFOR-TV first reported. A caption beneath the image, which has since been deleted, apparently read: “New high visibility targets on the 500 yard range.”

Organizers of the July 18 event, which combines running and shooting, told Freedom Oklahoma Executive Director Troy Stevenson that the post was intended as a joke rather than an offense to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, and that the colorful print had been selected because participants had complained about not being able to see the targets clearly.

Stevenson, who says he reached out to members of the group, nonetheless described the image as something that had been created by “people [who didn’t understand] social media or how bad their joke was” in an interview with the news station.

But that hasn’t stopped local advocates from condemning the image.

“Since it said, ‘Our new target,’ and it had guns…I took it as a threat,” one told the news station. Added another: “I think for many gay men and women in the state of Oklahoma, we feel as if we walk around as targets.”

Meanwhile, Oklahoma Run ‘n’ Gun officials poked fun at the backlash in a subsequent Facebook post.

“Alright. I’ll admit. We’re not the brightest crayons in the box,” they wrote.

White House Goes Rainbow After Gay Marriage Supreme Court Decision

The White House was lit up in the colors of the rainbow on Friday night to celebrate the Supreme Court’s historic ruling that made same-sex marriage legal across all 50 states.

“Tonight, the White House was lit to demonstrate our unwavering commitment to progress and equality, here in America and around the world,” the White House said in a statement. “The pride colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, and tonight, these colors celebrate a new chapter in the history of American civil rights.”

Boy Scout Finds Eagle Badge Somewhere Over the Rainbow

With Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” blasting, students, teachers, parents and community members tied thousands of fabric strips to the schoolyard fence. After 15-year-old David Fite tied the last piece into an expert bowline — arguably the strongest knot with the least stress to the lead line — the only thing standing between the boy and his lifelong dream of becoming an Eagle Scout was a rainbow.

When he overheard camp counselors discussing the Boy Scouts of America’s institutionalized homophobia two years ago, David returned home to Chicago despondent. “I was having a blast,” he recalls. “I couldn’t understand why any kid, gay or straight, wouldn’t want to be a part of it.” After a quick Internet search confirmed his worst suspicions, David told his mother that he needed to quit or follow the lead of a handful of Eagle candidates who were earning, then returning, their badges in protest. Since her son loved camping and his troop, and was so close to achieving one of the country’s highest honors, she proposed another idea: If he thought the policy was so immoral, why not convince the organization to change it?

After countless letters to national leadership went unanswered, David joined a broad-based grassroots movement of fellow Scouts using social media to encourage people to make their voices heard. After 6 months of aggressive lobbying, lo and behold, David beat Goliath: the 105-year-old institution begrudgingly reversed its national ban prohibiting openly gay youth Scouts. However, the organization stopped short of permitting “open or avowed” gay adult members or leaders, arguing that to do so “would become a distraction to the mission of the BSA.”

Watching a handful of local chapters mobilizing to defy the new ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy, David sensed an opportunity to move the needle. A boy’s final step to earning his Eagle badge is to “plan, develop and serve as a leader to others in a service project helpful to his religious institution, school,or community.” And so was that last month, a council of Scout elders found itself navigating in uncharted territory.

The men listened thoughtfully as the teenager stood in front of his brightly decorated tri-fold presentation board, nervously explaining the backstory: In 2008, after an incident of gay bullying at my public elementary school, Nettelhorst, concerned parents organized a diversity committee to help foster a culture of tolerance and respect, not just for gay kids, or kids of gay parents, but for all kids. To drive the point home, the group co-opted our annual Fence Project, arranging the colored fabric strips into the pride rainbow sequence, and posting this little sign:

Each Nettelhorst student has tied a piece of fabric to the fence as a tangible sign of his or her personal intention to create a better world. As Nettelhorst, we’ve also made a collective intention: that each of us becomes kinder, gentler and more tolerant. Here, the rainbow colors of gay pride are a visible sign of our respect for the neighborhood of which we are a part, and the diversity of families that we serve. In June, Nettelhorst will be the first public school to walk in Chicago’s Gay Pride Parade. We believe family means everybody. Enjoy the summer: SPF 50, baby!

Many a passerby stopped, smiled, tweeted and posted; some even cried. The rag-tag public civics lesson had inspired a deeply personal, neighborhood catharsis.

But when the Chicago Tribune ran a front-page story cheering our efforts, Nettelhorst landed on every hate blog in the country. We even had the “God Hates Fags” Westboro Baptist Church up from Kansas protesting. Critics accused the school of corrupting innocent children, and using them as pawns in a decidedly liberal social agenda, all on the taxpayer’s dime no less.

Under death threat, 200 Nettelhorst families marched in the parade that year; in fact, we led it. The outpouring of support from the 140,000-strong crowd was overwhelming, as if we had taken away generations of hurt in one surreal-therapeutic-Kodachrome coronation.

“It takes real courage to stand tall against bigotry,” State Representative Sara Feigenholtz said. “While I’ve been fighting tirelessly for basic human rights legislation in Springfield for years, what’s incredible is that these children have shown us what it truly means to value equality, dignity and each other.”

Chicago’s first openly gay Alderman, Tom Tunney, who marched in the parade proudly wearing his Nettelhorst Pride t-shirt, professed that, “Time will show on this day, Nettelhorst was on the right side of history.”

Now, seven years later, the original parent organizers are finally seeing the change they imagined. “We started this movement to teach our children to stand up for each other and for our community,” explains Brad Rossi, the gay father of a Nettelhorst seventh grader. “If they’ve learned that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world, and believe themselves to be part of that group, public education will have served its most important function.”

As in years past, every Nettelhorst student tied a piece of fabric to the fence, and made an intention to make the world a better place. The tangible expression of those intentions lured in curious neighbors just long enough to read the laminated sign explaining the project, with one additional paragraph, unthinkable just four months earlier:

This year, David Fite of Boy Scout Troop 115 chose the Nettelhorst Pride install as his Eagle rank community project. The Eagle rank is the highest advancement a young boy can achieve in the scouts — and by leading and completing the Pride projects at Nettelhorst Elementary School, he not only shows that a boy scout must be prepared, but kind, respectful and understand that love is what we all have in common.

Next to the fence, at the corner of Aldine and Broadway, stands a forty-foot ash, one of the few trees to survive America’s devastating emerald ash borer infestation. David’s troop leader climbed a tall ladder to hang disco balls from the branches; fellow Scouts wrapped the trunk in colorful ribbon; Nettelhorst kindergarteners sprinkled the decaying wood chips that cover its roots with glitter. When the new “I DREAM” tree was all finished, David penned the first tag with a Sharpie: “I DREAM… of a day when ALL Americans are free to love and to be loved in return.” -David Fite, Eagle Scout Candidate, Troop 115.

Beyoncé Reigns Victorious in a Rainbow Frock Straight From the Fall Runway

Beyonce

It was only yesterday that Beyoncé joined her husband Jay Z at a Manhattan press conference to announce his new music streaming service, Tidal, which boasts a roster that includes Kanye West, Madonna, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Daft Punk, and Jack White, amongst others—so let’s just say the couple has something to celebrate. It’s no wonder, then, that the superstar took to the streets of Manhattan today in a shimmering rainbow frock and braided satin shoes straight off of Marco de Vincenzo’s Milan runway—the formfitting dress perfectly captures the whimsy of the eighties—a notably strong era for the music industry as well as a trend that took the fall runways by storm at Christopher Kane, J.W.Anderson, and Louis Vuitton. Clearly, Queen B is earning her title.
