Gucci’s Susan Chokachi to be Honored at Make Equality Reality Gala

This year’s Make Equality Reality Gala will celebrate Gucci America president and chief executive officer Susan Chokachi along with A Breeze of Hope Foundation founder Brisa De Angulo, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Equality Now.
The annual gala, to be held October 30 at Gotham Hall in New York, will be co-chaired by Gloria Steinem, Tara Lynda Guber, Susan Hassan, Chandra Jessee, Karen Lehner and Sue Smalley.
“I am proud to be part of a company that is fully committed to protecting human rights and fighting for gender equality,” Chokachi said of the recognition. “In 2013, Gucci founded Chime for Change to campaign for education, health and justice for girls and women all over the world, supporting the work of organizations like Equality Now, which are proving — often against extreme odds — that change is possible. It is an honor to partner with Equality Now, whose legal victories and landmark legislation wins have helped to change the course of history for so many girls and women.”
Equality Now was founded in 1992 as an international human rights organization working with the help of lawyers, activists and supporters to enable women and girls to live a life free from gender discrimination and things like sex trafficking,

Welcome To Reality: Rihanna Says She Experiences Racism During Business Deals

In news that’s right up there with the sky being blue and water being wet, Rihanna believes that even she has been a victim of racial prejudice. Go figure.

Reports Page Six:

In a profile in the upcoming issue of T: The New York Times Style Magazine, the pop star, 27, opens up about what it was like being made aware of her race after moving to the US from her home country of Barbados when she was still a teen.

“You know, when I started to experience the difference — or even have my race be highlighted — it was mostly when I would do business deals,” she tells interviewer Miranda July.

No one cared about the “Bitch Better Have My Money” singer’s race when it came to performing. And while some may attribute the change in attitude that she noticed to her age at the time, Rihanna made clear that it’s something that continues to this day.

“And, you know, that never ends, by the way. It’s still a thing,” she said. “And it’s the thing that makes me want to prove people wrong. It almost excites me; I know what they’re expecting and I can’t wait to show them that I’m here to exceed those expectations.”

For the record, they probably did notice Rihanna race when it comes to performances—there is nothing wrong with acknowledging it—because the powers that be were strictly thinking about the money to be made. To think racism only happens when business is at hand is just plain naive.

Let us know what you think in the comments.

How Oculus Solved Virtual Reality

The 1990s saw the rise—and fall—of virtual reality. While everyone could imagine a technology that allowed us to be somewhere else, no one was able to make it happen. No one, that is, until an 18-year-old named Palmer Luckey invented the Oculus Rift. We speak with Luckey and other Oculus employees about how they managed to crack one of technology’s toughest riddles and make VR feasible for the first time.

How One Model Went From Reality TV to Fronting the Fashion Campaign Everyone’s Talking About

hillier bartley

The launch of Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley’s luxurious new label, Hillier Bartley, brought with it more than a wealth of luxurious sportswear. The design duo’s first campaign—a soft-focus image completely in line with the “rock-’n’-roll femininity” Bartley described to Vogue’s Sarah Mower—has introduced the world to modeling’s rising star Aida Becheanu. As one of the contestants on Romania’s Next Top Model back in 2011, the 20-year-old Becheanu has successfully made the transition from reality television to high fashion—much like TV alums Suvi Koponen and Aamito Lagum before her.

Describing the Top Model experience as somewhat surreal and “completely different” from the actual modeling industry, Becheanu has no plans to reprise her television moment. The time she spends in front of the camera now is with key photographers like David Sims, who shot her for both the Hillier Bartley ads and a slick story for Arena Homme Plus. Sims’s pared-down style suits Becheanu to a tee. “Working with him feels natural,” says Becheanu. “It didn’t even feel like work—he wants you to show your personality instead of simply posing, and I love that.”

Besides getting to shoot with Sims, appearing in the Hillier Bartley ads came with additional perks, namely a first look at the collection, including its covetable velvet-patched sweaters and exotic accessories. With its focus on quality and subtlety, the line’s pieces meshed well with Becheanu’s understated tastes. “The clothes are totally my style, and the quality was really beautiful,” says Becheanu. “Luella [Bartley] and David [Sims] were both so wonderful on set, so it was just a pleasure to have such a great time during my very first campaign.” Now Becheanu has her sights set on New York. “I’m concentrated on my work at the moment—I’m excited for my first season here in New York. I just arrived a few days ago and I can’t wait.”

Lakme Fashion Week: Fantasy Grounded in Reality

MUMBAI, India — Closing with elaborate sets — and again predominantly in tones of whites and blacks on the runway as it did last season — Lakme Fashion Week concluded its five days of shows Sunday with a finale by designer Gaurav Gupta.
The show was at Mehboob Studios in Bandra, in the heart of Bollywood, and had a startling white backdrop and a circular runway.
But the focus on fantasy — even with Bollywood actress and face of the Lakme beauty brand Kareena Kapoor in a black gown — wasn’t limited to the finale. The week had fantasy galore beginning with the first day, when designer duo Sandeep Khosla and Abu Jani created elaborate outfits with sequins, embroidery and ruffles, while Narendra Kumar conceptualized a bridal trousseau with the French Riviera in mind and, as he said, “for the modern man or woman for whom home could be anywhere in the world.”
There was a lot grounded in reality as well, though, both in the designs and the textiles used. The textile day on Thursday echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign to reinvent Banaras and its wealth of weavers. Held in partnership with the ministry of textiles, the day was an immediate

Stevie J & Joseline Hernandez Getting Their Own Reality Show

The biggest stars of ratchet reality series Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta are easily Joseline Hernandez and Stevie J. So it should be no surprise that the allegedly married couple are getting their own spinoff show.

Reports Deadline:

VH1 will renew one new series and add another spinning off its lynchpin Love & Hip Hop franchise, the network said today while taking a breather between its two-part Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta reunion special, among the top-rated cable reality series of the summer. Both shows spin from Atlanta: VH1 has ordered Season 2 of K.Michelle: My Life, and is launching an untitled new series featuring Stevie J and Joseline. Both are slated for winter 2016.

“In a summer where the film Straight Outta Compton went straight to #1, Taylor Swift’s collaboration with Kendrick Lamar topped the Billboard charts and our ownLove & Hip Hop: Atlanta ranked as the #1 reality show on cable, hip hop’s dominance of pop culture was confirmed yet again,” said Susan Levison, EVP Original Programming and Production at VH1. “We’re excited to fuel our audience’s continued fascination with all things hip hop by extending the storylines of some of their favorite Love & Hip Hop cast members.”

Set to premiere in Winter 2016, VH1 describes Joseline and Stevie’s show as follows:

Picking up after “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta,” Stevie J and Joseline head to Los Angeles in VH1’s new untitled half-hour spin-off series. Premiering this winter, these eight episodes will follow the couple as they hit the west coast and set their sights on the Hollywood big screen. While continuing to work on their respective careers, Joseline tries to bond with Stevie’s five children and Stevie J heads back to the studio and reconnects with old friends in the music industry. With these two, relationship highs and lows are par for the course, but with a few laughs and a lot of love, Stevie J and Joseline consistently prove that they can overcome any obstacle.

Recently, Stevie J reunited with Sean “Diddy” Combs and the Hitmen to produce music for the Bad Boy founder’s forthcoming new album.

Recently, Geraldo Rivera came for Kendrick Lamar, saying the Compton native’s performance at the BET Awards sent the “wrong message.” The “Alright” rapper responded to FOX News pundits nonsense on TMZ Live, with nothing but truth.

Rivera felt Kendrick spitting atop a vandalized cop car, in protest to police brutality, wasn’t a good message to send to Black kids.

ROAD-TRIPPING WITH TOMS: Toms is using virtual reality to prove that it’s virtuous. In an effort to quell the cynics who doubt that it actually provides shoes, glasses and water access to needy communities as part of its “One for One” philosophy, the Los Angeles-based company is letting people tag along on one of its giving trips to Peru through a virtual reality headset. Directed by Jon Watts, the four-minute film gives the audience a bird’s-eye view of the dusty terrain in a remote part of Peru before plopping them next to its employees as they measure kids’ feet for shoes and play soccer with them between pastel-painted buildings in the village.
Starting today, the company is providing one kit — which integrates technology and equipment from Oculus, Samsung and LSTN at a cost of $ 1,000 apiece — to each of its stores in London; Amsterdam; Los Angeles; New York; Chicago; Austin, Tex., and Portland, Ore. Last weekend, it set up virtual reality nooks in the shoe departments of Nordstrom stores in Seattle and Cerritos, Calif. This LEGO Wedding Cake Turns A Childhood Fantasy Into A Grown-Up Reality

At their core, weddings are a celebration of the building blocks of a couple’s relationship. What better way to commemorate such a monumental occasion than to have a LEGO wedding cake?

lego cake

The epic wedding cake above was designed by small family bakery Cupcakes by SJ for a family member last week.

“They had a LEGO theme for what was to be a relaxed, low-key wedding,” Sam of the London-based bakery told The Huffington Post in a Facebook message. “My cousin [the bride] gave my father the idea and the LEGO men, as she wanted them as a keepsake of the day. Then we set to making it a reality for her with no idea of what would happen from there.”

The cake contains LEGO builders who appear to be in the process of covering the cake layers with icing. On top of the cake sit a LEGO bride and groom.

What would make this even more perfect is if the lucky couple was going to Florida’s new LEGOLAND hotel for their honeymoon!

We Can’t Use 1915’s “Biological Reality” to Assess 2015’s Marriage Equality

As our nine Supreme Court justices wrestle with a decision in the consolidated same-sex marriage case, Obergefell v. Hodges, one of the central arguments they will weigh is the role of marriage in raising children. At least, that’s how the opponents of same-sex marriage have framed the issue in recent years: this isn’t about gay people at all, it’s about children.

In arguing the case, former Michigan Solicitor General John J. Bursch said the issue of marriage revolved around “biological reality,” and that the state’s definition of “biological reality” should involve only one man and one woman conceiving a child.

That may have been reality in 1915, but in 2015 “biological reality” has changed, just as has every corner of our society.

Technology has transformed our reality, and that goes for family building. Advances in medicine have opened the door to parenthood for so many people – including same-sex couples – who just a few decades ago would have been unable to conceive a child. Proven clinical protocols have demonstrated that men with HIV can have children safely – with minimal risk to mother or child – with the application of some new techniques. These technologies are inspiring and life-affirming.

Yet by Bursch’s measure, airplanes should be illegal because humans don’t have wings.

Even if someone thinks that same-sex couples having children will lead to the end of civil society, blocking those couples from marrying will do nothing to curb that. I’ve helped hundreds of LGBT people become parents, and the vast majority had no legal recognition of their relationship when they conceived. There are certainly other countries where these couples are blocked from having children through surrogacy or adoption, but in the United States we ended that debate long ago – Married or not, the right of gay couples to have children isn’t going away.

“When you change the definition of marriage to delink the idea that we’re binding children with their biological mom and dad,” Bursch argued, “that has consequences.”

The consequences, in this case, are children who are happier, healthier and well-adjusted to today’s society. Various studies have pointed to that conclusion for children raised by same-sex couples. A recent study of 500 children in Australia said quite clearly that “children in same-sex parent families had higher scores on measures of general behavior, general health and family cohesion.” This corroborates what we know from other studies showing kids with gay parents are just like kids with straight parents.

Yet the Australian study went a step further and found something that did in fact hurt these children of same-sex couples: the stigma associated with their parents. Laws against the legal recognition of these parents, public-relations campaigns demeaning gay people, and yes, arguments before the Supreme Court, hurt these children far more than the sexual orientation of their parents ever could.

Australia is one of the many countries with laws banning surrogacy, a huge impediment to gay-male couples having children. With countries like Thailand and India tightening the controls on surrogacy, many of them now have to look across the Pacific Ocean to California to build the family they want.

Yet even Australia is poised to recognize same-sex marriage by the end of the year.

The children of same-sex couples are 2015’s “biological reality.” The wonderful families I have watched walk through my doors over the last two decades have been inspiring. Now it’s time for the Supreme Court to make our nation’s laws consistent with today’s reality and legalize same-sex marriage once and for all.

It’s what these children deserve.

Turning Dream Jobs Into Reality: Designer, Athena Procopiou

Everyone has a “dream job” lying dormant in their hearts. Unfortunately, it’s usually plagued by one negative thought: that it can’t become a reality. But many people have turned their dreams into daily realities. How did they get there? What inspires them? Surely they took all the right steps at the exact right time, without suffering any detours. I spoke to a few very successful people working their own “dream jobs” hoping to glean some insight.

2015-04-21-1429622377-1782133-AthenaProcopiou.jpg

Sundrenched sandy beaches, the sound of cicadas chirping in the trees and the scent of saltwater wafting through the warm island breeze. This idyllic image is the substance of many people’s recurring daydreams. But can those daydreams become the basis of a luxury lifestyle brand that’s quickly becoming synonymous with the image that inspired it? For the realization of that evolution of the daydream, look no further than Greek born, Switzerland bred, London based designer, Athena Procopiou.

“I was always surrounded by creativity and encouraged to develop my own,” Athena says from her color-filled studio in Chelsea. As a child, she studied classical piano and toured all over Switzerland. Later, History of Art studies at Christie’s in Paris ultimately led to graphic design at London’s Central St. Martin’s. It seems unavoidable that Athena would eventually helm her own brand; and she already had the perfect vision to fulfill.

“I’ve always identified with the well-travelled, free-spirited boho woman who is forever chasing the sun,” Athena tells me. It’s the stuff of any designer’s dreams the way her first scarf collection was instantly picked up by some of London’s coolest boutiques. Well-deserved, international success quickly followed.

“I absolutely love when a customer tags me on their Instagram photo wearing one of my kimonos while lounging on their super-yacht while cruising around the Mediterranean, or while dancing on a wind-swept sand dune with a pack of Gypsies in the desert!” she says, earnestly.

Her eponymous label has evolved and now also includes glamorous kimonos, boho-chic dresses fit for dancing by a beach bonfire and her latest addition, a covetable swim collection made in some of her most iconic prints. “My favorite pieces are the ones you can wear during the transition from the beach to sunset. You know, the little sun dresses and sexy fun kimonos which can be thrown over a bathing suit for after beach cocktails, but before you go out for the night?” I think each and every single item from her collection fits that criteria perfectly and, more often than not, tends to actually inspire many photo ready moments!

Athena’s business strategy has been a major factor in her success. “I’m growing my business organically — letting it evolve season to season. I think it’s great to plan ahead but not to force it.” Moreover, she always trusts her instincts and turns to them when making important decisions, such as expanding from a scarf brand to a full lifestyle brand.

Trusting instincts is also the critical advice Athena offers anyone interested in beginning their own company. “Every day has its challenge, but in the end it’s a wonderful feeling to see something grow organically!” Another majorly important factor is brand recognition. “Even though my collections change each season I have several iconic designs which I carry over and incorporate into each collection,” she shares. “I use these as a ‘common thread’ to make my brand stand out. It’s important for any new designer to create and maintain their own brand identity.”

Despite her careful strategizing, Athena is amazed that in such a short amount of time, her label is carried in some of the best stores worldwide and she has an international clientele. “It shows that there are boho women all over the world that chase the sun just like me!” she says, enthusiastically. “It’s fantastic how I have customers from Bali to Bahrain and everywhere in-between.” She attributes some of her success to social media. “We’re so consumed with social networking on a global scale — the world seems so small on your iPhone! I’m able to use this wonderful platform to sell my dreams, products, lifestyle, brand and aspirations.”

Other than working with a great team, a favorite part of her job is when new deliveries arrive at the studio (everything is hand made in Italy) and the finished products look just like she envisioned when designing. But that’s not to be taken for granted. “I find production a very tough part of my job,” she says. This is especially thanks to Athena’s extremely high quality standards. “I design a luxury brand and the quality of the product needs to match the design. My customer notices the difference between great quality and mediocre quality — I always have to have the best quality in all my products.”

She tells me that the creative process is a constant work in progress; she has to make herself move on when one season is over and start fresh with a new collection. If this all seems slightly overwhelming, she admits that sometimes it is. “The best way to relieve my stress is through yoga,” she shares, easily identifying herself with the free-spirited, boho-chic, sun-chasing women she dresses.

What’s next on the colorful horizon? Other than her new swimwear line, Athena’s also working on home furnishings — fabrics, wallpaper and cushions. “Ultimately, I would love to have my own bricks-and-mortar flagship shop. But it needs to happen in its own time,” she says, waiting for her finely tuned instincts to give her the go ahead. Until then, she’s looking into pop-up shops in “various sun-drenched cities” to test the waters. “You may find the first Athena Procopiou pop-up shop in Mykonos next summer!” I’m sure that her customers will be mooring their super-yachts in port and lining up all along the island’s winding streets for the occasion. After all, that’s what they do in the daydream…

Reality Check: A Quick Chat with Boy George, Plus Melody Gardot, Dylan Jakobsen and Radio Room Exclusives

MELODY GARDOT’S “PREACHERMAN” EXCLUSIVE

International best-selling singer, songwriter and musician, Melody Gardot, is back with her 4th studio album, Currency of Man. The highly-anticipated Currency of Man is an intensely creative milestone, transcending musical distinctions of jazz, blues and R&B, to offer a stirring social and musical statement. On the new album, Melody joins forces again with Grammy Award-winning producer Larry Klein. This striking musical partnership saw their last collaboration, 2009’s My One and Only Thrill sell over 1.5 million copies, and produce songs that have become modern classics. Currency of Man marks a substantial leap forward indeed, as we see Gardot take her gift for songwriting in a completely different direction to her last record, the critically acclaimed release The Absence.

Melody explained, “Every album is a journey and this disc in some ways is a leap into the unknown. After spending time in LA, the songs all became about the people I’d meet, people who were experiencing life on the fringe.”

About her song “Preacherman,” Melody revealed, “The song (Preacherman) is inspired by the story of Emmett Till. It talks about his life, but more importantly it centers on the idea that racism is not dead. Sixty years ago he died, the same way that Trayvon Martin died–for nothing–and to put it plainly, I’m tired of it. The lyrics recount this young boy’s story, as it deserves to be told and remembered, but more importantly the song also begs the question ‘How many times do we have to repeat ourselves before we learn from our mistakes?'”

A Conversation with Boy George

Mike Ragogna: George, you’ll be premiering a new reality series. How is this going to work?

Boy George: Well, it’s something I’ve been asked to do before, it’s not the first time I’ve been approached but it really wasn’t something I’d ever really considered in the past. It’s not something I would think of doing in the UK because we just don’t have it down like you guys do. We tend to work the American ones, and they’re the popular ones. Somehow the other way around, it sort of works. When you do an interview in the UK, the first question’s always something really depressing like, “Tell us about the worst point in your life.” [laughs] That’s the starting point and you think, “Where’s it going to go from here if that’s your first question?” “Tell me when you were most unhappy.”

No, I’m in a really good mood! I feel like I’m in quite a happy place. I invest a lot in happiness. One of the things I love about L.A. is there’s a lot of positivity there. I hope that will come across in the show. But no one really knows what it’s going to be! I asked that question very early on, but it’s one of those things where until you turn on the cameras and put all the characters in place and do it you really don’t know what it’s going to be. If you watch an early episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians it’s very different to what it is now. I think part of the excitement for me is that I really don’t know what it’s going to be.

MR: According to your quote, I think we have a hint of what it’s going to be like. “If Marge Simpson met Dolly Parton and went dancing with Ziggy Stardust.”

BG: [laughs] That’s just what goes on in my head! That’s obviously just a colorful quip, but I guess how hard can it be to be myself?

MR: Nice. So we’ve seen the entertainer Boy George as a solo artist, as a member of Culture Club, and you’ve participated in other creative configurations. So who really is Boy George these days?

BG: I like to think I’m a little more chilled out. As I said earlier, I invest a lot in being happy, it’s a big thing for me. I want to bring people into the creative process. I’ve got lots of exciting projects coming up. But eventually it’s really just me being me. I’m a Gemini, there’s a lot of personalities going on. [laughs] I’m approaching the change, as well. [laughs]

2015-04-14-1428979392-3702096-BoyGeorge02photocreditDeanStockingsRESZIED.jpg

MR: Is it possible this series is a vehicle for your own rediscovery?

BG: I think, in a funny way, I’m more creative now than I’ve ever been. I’m having a kind of creative Renaissance. It’s a wonderful opportunity to have a platform to bring all of that stuff to public attention.

MR: I know you’re still putting the pieces together, but how do you think your series might differ from other reality shows?

BG: That is a really big question. I’m not sure how we’ll change it up. Obviously I’m me, and those other shows don’t have me. As far as I know I’m not a Kardashian. If you compare The Kardashians to The Osbournes, it’s a totally different vibe. The Osbournes have that great British explosive emotion. The Kardashians are a little bit more calm. Even when they’re getting annoyed they’re quite linear and they’re quite controlled. I don’t know if I’m like that, I’m probably going to find out a lot of stuff about myself.

MR: How do you feel about your contributions to music and pop culture to this point?

BG: It’s an ongoing process for me. In a funny way, I’m more excited about what I’m doing now than I was twenty years ago. I’m very into now. The past has allowed me to be who I am right now and I’m very grateful for that, but I think it’s important to have a healthy respect for the past but not to wallow in it. Now is always the most exciting time. I just feel that I’m ready for a new adventure and something quite extreme, something quite different to what I’ve been doing. Coming to America, uprooting myself from the UK, it’s going to change the alchemy of my life. I’m kind of excited by that.

MR: Beautiful. What advice do you have for new artists?

BG: I think you have to be really focused on what it is you want to achieve, you have to be able to take criticism and the knocks and all that and you’ve got to just stay focused. If you want it badly enough you will get there, but you have to be passionate about what you’re doing. I think you also have to operate from your heart chakra. You have to really come from your heart and soul. That’s how you connect with people. Whenever I’m working with young singers it’s the first thing I always say–connect to what you’re doing emotionally, that’s the key. That’s what makes people out there feel something and connect with you. I think that’s the most important advice I’d give anyone.

MR: What do you feel has been your biggest growth?

BG: I’m happy. [laughs loudly] I think the biggest thing of all is that I finally like myself. Not in a kind of egotistical, self-obsessed way, but I quite like being me now. I think it’s been a long struggle to get to the point where I’m pretty happy in my skin. I’ve grown up a lot in the past few years, I’ve become a bit more grounded, a bit more Zen. I feel pretty happy.

MR: And I hope you’re happy about making so many people happy throughout your career. So many really appreciate you and what you’ve added to their lives.

BG: Thank you, that’s a really sweet thing to say.

DYLAN JAKOBSEN’S “CAN’T BELIEVE YOU’RE GONE”

2015-04-14-1428983555-4333153-MWK18131.jpg
photo credit: Matt Kennelly / Fort Vanity Photography

According to Dylan Jakobsen…

“I’m very excited for the release of my ‘Can’t Believe You’re Gone’ video. I’ve always been one who wants to go out and tell a story but this time I wanted to write something a little closer to home. As we get older, we realize the people we love are getting older and everyday you risk the chance of losing somebody close to you. This video is about remembering the time you spent together and honoring their memory. We shot ‘Can’t Believe You’re Gone’ in a small town about 100 miles southeast of Seattle. On the anniversary of his father’s death, a son heads to the cemetery to honor his dad and has flashbacks of some of his favorite childhood memories along the way.

“I wrote ‘Can’t Believe You’re Gone’ in mid-2014 after hearing the news that my close friends grandfather had passed away. I hope this song can mean as much to each person listening as it does for who its dedicated to and myself.”

RADIO ROOM’S “BETTER NOW” EXCLUSIVE

2015-04-14-1428984039-8362797-image003.jpg

According to Radio Room’s Robbie Murphy…

“‘Better Now’ was one of the last songs we worked on for the record. It was kind of floating about the writing sessions for a good two months before anyone said anything about it. It all started with that kind of synth-delay driven guitar riff, but it was so bad sounding at the start before we tweaked it up that we didn’t really think anything of it. When we went into the studio with it, we actually thought we were going to see it as the weakest song on track but we think it turned out to be probably the one we enjoy most on the album.

“Steve Albini was a gent to work with. We got on with him really well and learned a lot from the experience. Looking back on it, if there was a chance to just talk to him and not record an album, we would have still went over for that reason alone. He made the sound golden and gave us plenty of creative control, letting the album unravel naturally over the course of the recording sessions.”

The Death of Fake Reality Television, The Birth of ‘Connected’

To celebrate the premiere of “Connected,” a new docu-series premiering this week on AOL, some of the biggest reality television stars from the last decade participated in a mock funeral for the fledgling genre.

The group, including Omarosa Manigault, who officiated the event, gathered in Times Square to properly bid farewell to the reality television trends of yesteryear. The hope is that “Connected” will usher in a new, truer era of personal storytelling. The show, which was produced by Oscar-nominated documentarian Morgan Spurlock, focuses on six New Yorkers, all of whom were given a camera to document their lives over the course of six months. (Susan Sarandon, comic Derek Gaines and tech executives Eli and Ido Bendet-Taicher are among the show’s stars.)

“This series pulls back the curtain on the world of over-produced, fabricated reality TV, and what emerges is raw emotion and real storytelling,” Spurlock said in a statement in March. “The characters are truly brave and aspirational in what they share with the world.” (The Huffington Post is owned by AOL.)

The first four episodes are available to watch right now. And to kick off the genre shift, Tila Tequila, Jon Gosselin and “Mob Wives” star Big Ang were among the participants in the fake funeral.

Barely Famous It Girls Sara and Erin Foster on How a “Reality Star” Does L.A.

Sara and Erin Foster Barely Famous

Heading to L.A. anytime soon? (Or just want to look like you are?) Let stylish sisters Erin and Sara Foster be your guide. After all, Erin, a comedy writer, and Sara, an actress, are born-and-bred Californians, with a family tree that includes Gigi Hadid and Brody Jenner and a brand new VH1 satirical comedy series, Barely Famous, that pokes fun at reality TV—you really can’t get more L.A. than that.

The sisters may deviate between classic film alliances—Erin holds a candle for Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise, while Sara tends toward Diane Keaton’s repeated turns for Woody Allen—but they both lay claim to an inherently California girl aesthetic. “I like to channel my inner Candice Swanepoel and attempt to be ‘hippie chic,’ ” Sara says. She favors flat sandals (“I know I look better in a heel, but I really only wear Birkenstocks and Havaianas”) and Re/Dun’s high-waisted light-wash denim, while Erin prefers off-duty classics like men’s button-down shirts, Levi’s cutoffs, and Converse, citing coconut oil as her must-have beauty product. (“Our mom is 64 and never tried Botox and doesn’t even get facials; all she uses is coconut oil on her face and body. So my sisters and I decided to get on that train,” says Sara.) And the two might have different festivals in mind this summer—Sara’s got her sights set on Burning Man, Erin on Stagecoach—but when it comes to their hometown, they have a singularly cool itinerary to share. Here, their five favorite spots, and how to look the part when you arrive.

Oprah Approved: Evelyn Lozada Lands Reality Show On OWN [Photos]

Evelyn Lozada’s hiatus from reality T.V. is effectively over. Lozada is readying a new reality show on Oprah’s OWN network focussing on her life as a mother, and fiancée to L.A. Dodger’s player, Carl Crawford.

Lozada has a 21-year-old daughter, Shaniece, from a previous relationship, and gave birth to a son with Crawford a year ago.

Crawford, 33, proposed to Lozada, 39, in 2013. She hit the emergency breaks on reality shows after years of fighting on Basketball Wives, and a physical attack by ex husband Chad Ochocinco. The former couple’s VH1 show was canceled following Ocho’s arrest for head-butting her.

This new show was announced along with one about that guy from Iyanla: Fix My Life with  34 children with 17 different .

Lozada will executive produce her new OWN show, tentatively titled Evelyn.

Does it sound interesting? Check out some family photos in the gallery below.

What Being a Reality Show Loser Taught Me About Winning at Life

2015-01-08-FrancescaHogi.jpg

It’s hard to say which subjects one to more derision — being a contestant on a reality TV show, or failing miserably as a contestant on a reality TV show.

As far as losing on national television in front of millions of people goes, I have special expertise.

I was a contestant on the CBS reality television show Survivor, twice.

The first time, I appeared on Survivor: Redemption Island, where a fiasco of a tribal council earned me the distinction of being the first person voted out that season.

Because I had lots to say and didn’t go down without a fight, I made more of an impression than your typical “first boot” (as we are called). As a result, I was the first “first boot,” after 22 seasons of the show, to be invited back again for a second season.

Being a glutton for punishment and also overly competitive, I agreed to play again. Besides, in my mind it was a virtual guarantee that at the very least, I would top my previous season’s showing. After all, the second time around I was on an “all-star” tribe, and some of my tribe mates were my actual, real-life friends!

If you’ve never seen the show, I totally won the second time! You can stop reading now!

If you have seen the show, you know what happened — I got voted out first, again. (womp womp)

It’s been a couple of years now since my second season, Survivor: Caramoan, aired. To this day I still have strangers come up to me in the street with complete and utter pity in their eyes as they say some version of “I felt sooooo bad for you!” I’ve gotten tons of sympathetic Facebook messages, tweets and the like.

I am “famous” (on a very E-list level) for being either the worst or the unluckiest contestant in Survivor history.

Sounds fun, doesn’t it? Well, I will leave the Survivor-viewing public to decide my legacy as a contestant. On a personal level, my public humiliation was not in vain. This is what being a reality show loser taught me about winning at life:

1. You Must Define Success For Yourself

I’m not going give you the whole “winning isn’t everything” cliché, because let’s face it — it totally is!

The question is, what are you trying to win, and why? I went on Survivor with the intention of winning — the prize is a million dollars, after all — but I quickly discovered that the prize wasn’t the most important thing to me.

In Survivor, as in life, one popular strategy is to keep your head down, do what’s expected of you, and don’t piss anyone off. It’s called “flying under the radar” and it’s how a lot of us approach many circumstances in life. Which is NO way to win in life!

In my “real” life, this has never been my strategy. I’ve walked away from lucrative, secure jobs because they didn’t speak to my heart. I’ve never stayed in a relationship with someone I wasn’t crazy about (and who wasn’t crazy about me) and I’m not one to keep my mouth shut when someone pisses me off.

For me, above all, success is being true to yourself. And that applies to your words, your actions, your career path, your relationships, everything.

In Survivor, the goal is to win one million dollars. I decided that wasn’t enough money for me to be untrue to myself, and about that I have no regrets.

In our real lives, the goal might be to keep a job (even if we hate it), or stay in a relationship (even if it’s unfulfilling), or just to go along with the crowd so that no one rejects us, or says anything bad about us.

You have to be able to live with yourself and your decisions, no one else. Success isn’t just one thing. I know other contestants who made it much further in the game than I ever did, and yet they’re still tormented by the experience, years later.

The point is, success for you is what you say it is. Yours is the only opinion that truly matters about your own life!

2. There Will Always Be Haters

We don’t leave our haters behind in high school. You might not hear from them as loudly, but they’re still out there! If you ever appear on a reality television show, however briefly, you will discover this firsthand.

After my first season of Survivor, I couldn’t help but be curious about what viewers of the show had to say about me. A lot of it was positive, and I got a big outpouring of support from fans who felt that I hadn’t been given a fair chance. (Thank you, supporters!)

I allowed my ego to be fed by those who felt they “loved” me. But not everyone loved me.

At one point after my second season someone created a Wikipedia page about me. (Thank you, stranger! So sweet of you!) I didn’t even know it existed until I started hearing chatter about the campaign to have it deleted.

A group of strangers spent time and energy to lead a campaign to have my Wikipedia page deleted because they felt I didn’t deserve it since I wasn’t “famous enough!” (The irony of my being “famous enough” for them to even care in the first place was apparently lost on them.)

Well, in the end the haters won their campaign and my page was deleted. Congratulations, haters!

There are people out there in Internetland who have viciously criticized everything about me, from my looks to my gameplay to my wardrobe to comments I’ve made in interviews.

I’ve always been a pretty resilient person, but I have to admit some of that bruised my ego. No one enjoys reading strangers gleefully writing about how ugly, annoying or stupid they think you are!

But then I got the gift of one particularly vehement viewer’s comments about me.

He (or she — these comments are mostly anonymous) wrote that not only did they hate me, but they hated me so much they hoped I got cancer and died.

That comment was just outrageous enough for me to feel sorry for someone who held so much anger towards anyone, much less a complete stranger who’d never done a thing to them or anyone they cared about! It also cured me of caring what any stranger has to say about me.

No matter who you are or what you do, someone will be happy to criticize you. Haters hate because they desperately want to make you feel as small as they feel they are. What your mom told you in 5th grade still holds true – you just can’t care what everyone thinks about you.

We’ve all been guilty of hating, myself included! But having my own public haters showed me just how much I never wanted to be that person. I just don’t want to feel hate towards anyone. That feeling sucks.

I know that whenever I’ve found myself feeling envy or judgment towards another person, it has only ever been a reflection of how I feel about myself. The remedy? Focusing on having a lot more love and compassion for me!

3. Failure Is Inevitable; Dignity Is Optional

When those strangers tell me how sorry they feel for me, I usually thank them for their sympathy, but tell them not to. More than once I have landed in the position of comforting someone else about my loss. I assure them that I am okay and my life has gone on just beautifully.

I’m not trying to paint some perfect picture of myself here. There are people who I played Survivor with who are dear friends of mine for life — even two who voted me out! And there are those at whom I will politely smile, say hello and keep it moving. Not everyone is meant to be in your life.

I wish I could say I had never publicly (or privately) said an unkind word about anyone I have played the game of Survivor with. That would be a lie. But I don’t say those words anymore.

A bitter person is not the person I choose to be. I choose to move past my reality TV failure and to define who I am what I have accomplished on my own terms, with my head held high.

One of the unexpected outcomes of losing so badly is the self-reflection it caused. After my second time being voted out, I was faced with going home to the same uninspiring job I had returned to after the first time.

That realization was just depressing enough to inspire me to make some major changes in my life. And that’s just what I did!

As it turns out, I have to thank those bastar– I mean — contestants for voting me out. Not only did I learn that I am tougher than I ever thought I was, but I started taking control of my life in a way I had never done before. After all, I have been in my underwear on national television — in high definition no less — so I really can handle anything.

Now I have a business and a life I love! I am unafraid of taking risks. Every so-called failure has a lesson, if you’re willing to seek it out. As an entrepreneur, I have had my share of lessons! My advice? If you’re going to lose, lose BIG! The important thing is to never lose sight of who you really are in the process.
