Mel takes a roll in the hay

Only Melanie

Hey guys! I hope everyone had a great weekend. I know I did. I had so much fun with my friends. I hope I get to see them sooner rather than later.

Today’s photo update comes from the farm, the barn to be more exactly. I took a roll around in the hay – wearing a cute outfit consisting of jeans and a pink top. I had so much fun in the barn, except when hay got in all the wrong places – if you know what I mean. But besides the pools, beaches etc – it was one my favorite photo shoot locations.

Check out all the pictures at Only Melanie, my personal pictures and video website.

I’ll see you later this week.

Love Melanie.

You Can Help Pick This Year’s Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just announced this year’s nominees for induction into its ranks. The 15 nominees — including Janet Jackson, Nine Inch Nails, The Smiths and Chaka Khan — span many genres, styles and time periods, though to qualify, they have to have released their first album or single at least 25 years ago.

Here’s the full list of nominees, in alphabetical order:

  • Chicago
  • Cheap Trick
  • Deep Purple
  • The Cars
  • Chaka Khan
  • Chic
  • The J.B.’s
  • Janet Jackson
  • Los Lobos
  • Steve Miller
  • N.W.A.
  • Nine Inch Nails
  • The Smiths
  • The Spinners
  • Yes

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — located in Cleveland, Ohio — doesn’t have a set number of slots open for induction each year, though a representative said that they usually aim to admit five performers, plus several more in other categories.

The final list of inductees will be determined by votes from more than 800 musical artists, professionals and historians from around the world; each will be able to select up to five of the nominees.

In addition, fans everywhere will be able to vote for inductees online — including right here:

The five artists that get the most votes from online fans will be added to a “fans ballot” that will be tallied along with the ballots from the Hall of Fame’s panel.

The names of the inductees will be revealed in December, and the actual induction will take place April 2016 in New York City.

News in Brief: Study: U.S. Wastes 2 Million Hours Annually Figuring Out Where Tape Roll Starts

BLOOMINGTON, IN—A new study published Friday by researchers at Indiana University revealed that U.S. citizens waste approximately 2 million hours annually trying to figure out where a roll of tape starts. “According to our data, thousands of hours are squandered each day by Americans running their fingers along the outside of a roll of tape until they stumble upon the frayed edge where the tape begins,” said the study’s co-author Bethany Cohen, who noted that the amount of time Americans fritter away bringing the roll of tape up close to their face and slowly tracing their fingertips around its perimeter accounts for nearly $ 15 billion annually in lost productivity. “Furthermore, we discovered that when Americans eventually find where the tape starts, they waste an additional 4 million hours per year meticulously picking at the tape with a fingernail until they have a large enough tab to peel …

Fifty years ago rock and roll became ‘rock’

Music often changes its sound. But 50 years ago, it also changed its meaning. On July 10, 1965, a group of hairy louts called the Rolling Stones hit No. 1 with “Satisfaction,” a song whose witty complaints about sexual frustration and social hypocrisy sowed the seeds of genuine protest. The next month, Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” shot to No. 2, fired by poetic language that spoke of the freedom, and the fear, of leaving every societal convention behind. By December, The Who released “My Generation,” a stuttering, slamming anthem that drew a violent line between young and old. Statements that incendiary proved music could be more than entertainment. It could be art, community, religion, even a spur to political change. To mark so huge a sea change, the sound got a new title — or at least an amended one. Fifty years ago, the music previously known as “rock and roll” morphed into the emphatically named “rock.” The word was both a description and an instruction. Followers had to be ready to move beyond the form’s earlier function as teen-pop that simply implied sex, freedom, and change. “Rock” made those things explicit, and their implementation extreme. It’s not that music had never acted as social critic, or as protest soundtrack, before. A wide variety of folk styles carried political messages, and social commentary, going back centuries. There even existed a movement simultaneous to early rock and roll — from strummers like the Weavers and Joan Baez — which made their worldly concerns plain. But it was the choice of one such troubadour, Bob Dylan, to combine folk awareness with the new rock power that made him THE bellwether artist of ’65. In fact, Dylan pushed so far ahead of the pack, some fans turned on him. When he and his band played an electric set at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, England, that year, it drew the famous cry of “Judas” from an audience member. Then in July, his plugged-in music at the Newport Folk Festival drew boos. With those moves, Dylan became the Johnny Rotten of his day, a proto-punk primed to plow ahead, whether the world was ready or not. Soon, they were. Dylan’s uncompromising stance trained the audience to respect artists who followed their own path. The charge of “sellout” became not just a put-down but a virtual crime. The new movement even affected the top band of the day: The Beatles greatly expanded their style on December 1965’s “Rubber Soul,” pivoting them towards more experimentation on “Revolver” in ’66 and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” the next year. Even songs that had already been hits were repurposed as political anthems. When Martha Reeves and the Vandellas’ “Dancing in the Street” came out in ’64, Motown czar Berry Gordy denied that its stirring lyrics about bringing people to the streets had a larger social meaning. After the summer race riots in the L.A. ghetto of Watts in ’65, the audience took that meaning for itself. Further north, in San Francisco, music’s connection to social consciousness found a new voice with The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. Both formed in ’65, though they wouldn’t become part of the national conversation until two years later, when they created the soundtrack for the Summer of Love. By then, everyone accepted rock’s new depth. The music had become a secular religion. In the process, it started what, decades later, became known as the “classic rock” era — from 1966 to ’72. The period set the bar for music so high, all the sounds since have either aspired to its intensity, or veered as far towards its opposite — flagrant commercialism. The belief system behind classic rock may strike some modern listeners as anachronistic, pretentious, or even quaint. But many young stars remain awed by its values and creativity. To them, it may seem like rock of such meaning always existed. Approaching its 50th birthday, it’s good to remember that, once, it was all new. jfarber@nydailynews.com

The Wrecking Crew Movie CLIP – The Spirit of Rock and Roll (2015) – Documentary HD

What the Funk Brothers did for Motown… The Wrecking Crew did, only bigger, for the West Coast Sound. Six years in a row in the 1960s and early 1970s, the Grammy for “Record of the Year” went to Wrecking Crew recordings. And now, THE WRECKING CREW tells the story in pictures and that oh, so glorious sound. THE WRECKING CREW is a documentary film produced and directed by Denny Tedesco, son of legendary late Wrecking Crew guitarist Tommy Tedesco. The film tells the story of the unsung musicians that provided the backbeat, the bottom and the swinging melody that drove many of the number one hits of the 1960’s.

E Street Band Inducted Into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Video)

“I scored a solo recording contract with Columbia Records, and I argued to get to choose my recording ‘sidemen,’ which was a misnomer, in this case, if there ever was one,” said Bruce Springsteen inducting the E Street Band at the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. “So, I chose my band and my great friends, and we finally landed on E Street — the rare, rock and roll hybrid of solo artistry and a true rock and roll band.” Through various incarnations, the “mighty men and women” of the E Street Band, as Springsteen calls them, have provided a unique and powerful sonic template for Springsteen’s music, combining British invasion guitar-driven rock, the joy of 1950s rock and roll and the drama and dynamics of soul music. They are showmen of the first order, and have more stamina than any rock band in the history of the music. And they had a lot of memories and kudos to the Boss to share while accepting their Hall of Fame awards.

David Sancious:
It’s incredibly impressive, and it is also a privilege to be associated with an artist whose body of work speaks rather so much not just to music and genres and stuff, but to what’s essential in life. What life itself is about and that’s why people love you so much Brucey. It’s true. So, you know, again all that sharing from my parents and all my friends, it has allowed me to have this wonderful life I have. I get to play with some of the best musicians on this planet, and it’s beyond any dream I had as a kid. The reality of my life now far surpasses anything I imagined younger.

Vini Lopez:
All I can say is whoa-ho ho, man! This is incredible! I wanna say my first thank you to Bruce. That’s the dude that wrote all the songs and made us all look good. Love you Bruce. But I don’t get to stand on this stage here without going through the years with all the fellow musicians that I’ve worked with over that last 50 years.

Jason Federici accepting for Danny Federici:
If my father was here tonight he would thank his parents, Gene and Dan Federici. He would thank his family and Mya. And then he would thank Bruce for giving him chills on the back of his neck the first time he heart him play at the “Up Stage.” Then he would thank his brother and sisters in the E Street Band for creating some of the best songs and best music that rock and roll has ever heard.

Nils Lofgren:
Without my entire family and musical heroes blazing the trail I would not be here tonight. Thank you lord for this sacred weapon of music in my life. Now I’ve been in the band for 30 years so I’m the new guy. Words can’t describe how incredible it is to play inside the bands energy and feel. Last tour we played over 220 different songs with wild ass-on-fire improv every night, where nothing was off limits except maybe wearing white. And to the spectacular fans whose presence and passion for 45 years are the glue and inspiration for me always, bless you. To finish, a big thanks to a big man, Clarence Clemons. I know you’re here tonight C. For 30 years of deep friendship on and off stage. For those countless magical moments reveling in this musical family we’ve all been so blessed to create, share and inhabit all these cherished decades as Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. With my whole heart, God bless and thank you all.

Victoria Clemons accepting for Clarence Clemons:
I really wish Clarence was here tonight to receive this award. It would have meant so much to him but, I am sure he is here tonight with us smiling down on all of us. Music was everything to Clarence since he was a child. He was known as “The Big Man” for many reasons but especially — (audience claps and laughs) you guys are so bad — for the big sound of that saxophone. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame thank you so much for recognizing Clarence and the band. Bruce, you made it all possible. Big Man would have blamed you for this. Clarence loved his fans and his friends and his E Street family but, most importantly Clarence loved his family, his sons. I’m so happy here tonight. Clarence truly was music. Thank you.

Patti Scialfa:
I was the person who was like, “Wait a second, do I wanna date The Beatles or do I wanna be in The Beatles?” Well I guess I’m a lucky girl. I got to play in one of the world’s greatest rock and roll bands, and you kinda know the rest. I’d like to thank Max, Garry, Steven, Roy, Mills, Clarence, Danny. I miss you. Whenever we step on that stage magic happens and it’s always an honor and inspiration to play with you. My three beautiful children are here tonight that I love. Evan, Jess, Sam, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for being there for me and making it work. I love you. And Bruce, I love you, too. Thanks for making the best of both worlds possible. Thank you and thank you Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Garry Tallent:
The fact of the matter is E Street Band begins and ends with out fearless leader Bruce Springsteen. I have played in various bands with all the guys in the original lineup and none of us had the insight, the foresight, the drive that Bruce did. Over the years and through the various changes we never lost sight of the goal of being a tight band lucky enough to have great songs to play and have as much fun as possible doing it. I proud to stand here today with the greatest musicians and friends I could ever have imagined. Thank you to the E Street fans for making it fun night after night and to my family for keeping it real. Rock and roll lives. Thank you.

Roy Bittan:
Well I guess all those accordion lessons paid off. It’s been an absolutely incredible journey. Tonight is about us and I would just like to say in light of tonight’s award I’d like to say something about my brother and sisters on stage tonight and about musicians like us. When we are called into the studio we’re not handed a piece of paper with music to play. We are entrusted with the responsibility to use our musical instincts and our particular vision to create a record. You hope that it all works out cause sometimes you never know what’s really gonna happen. Thank you for acknowledging us tonight. It’s a fantastic honor.

Max Weinberg:
It is indeed an honor to be standing shoulder to shoulder tonight among these wonderful musicians. My brothers and sister of the E Street Band cause night after night on stage or in the studio, they are a deep and constant source of inspiration to me and I love them all very, very much … Finally, ladies and gentleman as he himself has intoned night after night on stage when introducing Clarence, last but absolutely not least, Bruce. What can I say that could give you all even a hint of what our 40 year relationship has meant to me? The opportunity to work for and uniquely in the E Street Band alongside Bruce is so special. Ladies and gentlemen, the lessons that I have learned from Bruce are not solely musical. They go way beyond music and have provided for me a prospective on life that has enriched me far beyond the rock and roll dreams I held on to as a child. So Bruce, thanks for picking me up out of that audition lineup back in 1974 and for having me along for the ride.

Steven Van Zandt:
For those of us whose religion is rock and roll, this is the one day a year we get to give thanks. Sometime in the next year or so me and my lifelong best friend Bruce Springsteen will be hitting 50 years of friendship. I am thankful for that. Next year my relationship with my second family the E Street Band members and extended family John, Barbara, George and the late Frank Barsalona will be hitting 40 years, and I am thankful for that. The fact that we are still getting better and more popular around the world is due directly to our relentless leader’s strive for greatness, his insistence on our constantly evolving musical excellence and is continuing to write songs at an unnecessary high level of quality that is both historically unprecedented and profoundly inspiring, and I am thankful for that. I met my wife Maureen the same year I joined the band and she’s still getting better. I am thankful for her. These are the relationships that define one’s life and now being part of an institution where most of my musical heroes will live forever makes me very proud of the life’s work we have chosen and we’ve been lucky enough to do it and because it’s work I love doing and continue to love doing. Thank you all.

KISS Inducted Into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Video)

Few bands short of the Beatles inspired more kids to play the guitar and drums than KISS. The entire notion of rock stardom owes an enormous debt to the group’s signature makeup, explosive stage shows and anthems including “Rock and Roll All Nite” and “Detroit Rock City.” “They are four of the most recognizable faces on the planet and one of the most iconic and badass bands of all time — tonight is the night that KISS enters the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” proclaimed Tom Morello, inducting KISS to some of the loudest crowd cheers of the induction ceremony. Morello cited three important considerations for induction: “Impact, influence and awesomeness.” In their decades of rock and roll bombast, KISS checked all those boxes, and the sparks continued when the original members of the band took the stage to accept their Hall of Fame awards.

Gene Simmons:

We are humbled that the fans gave us the chance to do what we love doing. And so I’m here just to say a few kind words about the four knuckleheads who, 40 years ago, got together and decided to put together the band that you see on stage — critics be damned.

To Ace Frehley: his iconic guitar playing has been imitated, but never duplicated, by generations of guitar players around the world. To Peter Criss, whose drumming and singing … Well, there’s not a guy out there who beats the sticks who sounds just like Peter. Nobody’s got that swing and that style.

Something happened 40 years ago: I met the partner and the brother I never knew I had: Paul Stanley. You couldn’t ask for someone more awesome to be on the same team. I am humbled.

I was going to say a few kind words about Eric Carr, Rest in Peace. Mark St. John, Rest in Peace. Vinnie Vincent, the great Bruce Kulick, and of course, here we are 40 years later with the great Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer, and we continue on.

However, we wouldn’t be here today without the initial Fantastic Four. God bless you all.

Peter Criss:

I’d like to thank the Hall of Fame for this honor: I never thought this could happen in my life. Thank you. I’d like to thank everybody that had to do something with my career and the band’s career. For 50 years, I’ve been doing it; 40 years, we’ve been doing it.

I got my first lesson from my best friend, Jerry Nolan of the New York Dolls. And boy, that’s what started it all off.

I want to say that, even out of makeup, I’ll always be the Catman. God bless each and every one of you — I will remember this the rest of my life. Thank you so much.

Ace Frehley:

When I was 13 years old, I picked up my first guitar, and I always sensed that I was going to be in for something big. Little did I know, a few years later, there it was. I experienced the Summer of Love. That was before I met these clowns. Several years later, we got together — you know the story, it’s all KISS-tory. If I named everyone who helped us through our career, I’d be here for another half an hour. It’s great to be here. Life’s been good to me. Hopefully, I’ve got 10 or 20 more years to go. Thank you very much.

Paul Stanley:

For us, this is a special night, but it’s really a special night for all of our fans — this is vindication. We couldn’t have done this without you.

To Peter, Ace, Gene — we are the original four, so we could not have done this if we didn’t start this together. Everything we’ve done is built on the past. We’ve got a great, great legacy.

When I first started listening to music, I was lucky: I saw a lot of people I loved. When I was a kid, I saw Solomon Burke, I saw Otis Redding, I got to see the Yardbirds. I got to see Led Zeppelin; Jimi Hendrix; Sly and the Family Stone; the list goes on and on. What I loved about all these musicians is that they had the spirit of Rock and Roll. I believe that the spirit of Rock and Roll means you follow your own path regardless of critics, and regardless of your peers. I think we’ve done that for 40 years.

So, I look out here and I see all these people. I see faces that over the years inspired me. People who made me what I am. So I am here tonight because of the people who inspired me, but I’m also here because of the people I inspired. So God bless you all. It’s been a wonderful night.
