Donald Robertson Toasts Book at Assouline South Coast Plaza

SIGN HERE: “My hands aren’t cramping,” said Donald Robertson midway through his book signing. “This is what’s so good about L.A. People don’t come to book signings in L.A. because the traffic’s so bad.”
The illustrator — known for his witty voice and fashionably chic art — swung to Assouline’s South Coast Plaza store Thursday evening to celebrate the launch of his book “Donald — The Book.” After authoring two children’s titles, the partnership with Assouline marks what Robertson called his “big art moment.”
It’s also a reflection of a point in time where relatively unknown artists can surge to the big time via social media. Robertson, who doubles as Estée Lauder creative director, has cultivated a following of some 193,000 devotees on Instagram who track his posts — a mix of scenes with his family and glimpses of his art. The attention has turned the heads of companies such as Bergdorf Goodman and Smashbox, which he’s collaborated with.
“This is how it works. I met these two on Instagram probably 100 years ago and loved him and loved her,” he said motioning to a couple who came to his book signing. “She’s a great artist.”

Live In South Africa: Dust and Thunder

Mumford & Sons

Genre: Concert Films

Price: $ 12.99

Rental Price: $ 2.99

Release Date: January 1, 2017

When Mumford & Sons discussed the idea of touring South Africa, it struck them as an uncharted, mini adventure. They would announce a handful of gigs and see who showed up. No pressure. 5000 tickets went on sale, 5000 tickets sold out instantly. 85,000 ticket sales later, and the band were embarking on more than a little adventure. Overnight it had become a fully blown phenomena. DUST AND THUNDER chronicles the meeting of South Africa with their long-standing favourites, Mumford & Sons. A British band in huge demand, and a country extremely excited to welcome them. With a coachload of their close musical friends brought along for the ride, this exquisitely shot film captures the tour's conclusion with two nights in the beautiful Pretorian outback. Airing new songs from Wilder Mind and the Johannesburg mini-album (a collaboration with Baaba Maal, The Very Best and Beatenburg) for the first time, and watching the expansive crowds hollering back the old favourites, DUST AND THUNDER gets to the very heart of what makes Mumford & Sons such a special act, with the stunning beauty of the Pretorian outback as their backdrop. Captured with gusto by award-winning live specialist Dick Carruthers, the result is an exciting and emotional document and a truly spectacular concert film that may well go down as their finest.

‘South Park’ To Take On Police Violence In New Episode

The national debate on police violence has spread from Ferguson and Baltimore all the way to the small town of South Park, Colorado.

On this Wednesday’s episode of long-running animated series “South Park,” the town’s residents decide to abolish the police because they’re fed up with people who “impose their authority on the underprivileged.” Given the Comedy Central show’s history of iconoclasm, and its focus in Season 19 on political correctness, we’re gonna go ahead and guess that it doesn’t end well.

Here’s a clip from the episode, in which one of the town’s police officers defends his kind, saying that “not all cops are racist, trigger-happy assholes.”

“South Park,” which was created by college friends Trey Stone and Matt Parker, has a long and storied history of tackling controversial topics. Many of its most inflammatory episodes have focused on religious figures like Muhammad to the Virgin Mary.

South Carolina Cop Fired For Rocking Confederate Flag Boxer Shorts

Let’s start this by saying we have no beef with honest cops who go about their business and administer justice fairly. However, quite a number of racist idiots have managed to infiltrate the police force ranks.

The latest example of exemplary stupidity is a South Carolina cop who was fired after he was spotted rocking Confederate flag boxer shorts on Facebook. Yes, you read that right.

Reports WCIV:

A North Charleston police officer who posted a photo of himself wearing Confederate Flag boxer shorts to Facebook has been fired.

The photo spread across the Internet on Thursday after the post had been online for a few days.

Police Chief Eddie Driggers issues a termination letter to the officer, Sgt. Shannon Dildine, saying the photo undermines the officer’s “ability to improve trust and instill confidence when working with our citizens.”

“Your posting in this manner led to you being publicly identified as a North Charleston Police officer and associated both you and the Department with an image that symbolizes hate and oppression to a significant portion of the citizens we are sworn to serve,” Driggers wrote.

Dildine has ten days to appeal the decision.

Oh he can appeal? That’s mighty nice of them.

Can citizens who somewhere and vote that he never wears a badge again, or nah?

Don’t worry former Sgt. Dildine. Maybe you can get a gig at a local KKK field office.

Paul McCartney Delivers Show-Stopping Charleston Tribute In Columbia, South Carolina

Performing in South Carolina on Thursday night, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Paul McCartney dedicated a song to the victims of the mass shooting in Charleston.

“We pray that people of all colors will be able to live together in peace and harmony,” the musical icon said before playing the 1970 Beatles classic, “The Long And Winding Road.”

Nine black churchgoers were killed in a racially-motivated shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on June 17. Dylann Roof, the 21-year-old suspected gunman, was captured the following day.

McCartney also honored the victims at the Firefly Music Festival in Delaware last week, and that video can be seen above.

Thursday’s performance was at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, the state’s capital, about 115 miles from the scene of the attack.

Jon Stewart Offers The South A New Symbol To Replace The Confederate Flag

The Confederate flag appears to be on its way out, with retailers removing it from stores and governments discussing taking it off official flagpoles.

But as Jon Stewart said on Wednesday night’s “Daily Show,” there are still a few holdouts who want to keep what he called the “archaic symbol of racist insurrection.”

Those who support the flag claim it honors Southern heritage and history, as well as ancestors who fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War — but Stewart poked a huge hole in that argument.

“They fought for the South against the United States because of slavery. That’s the heritage you’re defending. I’m sure your soldier ancestors had other redeeming qualities, but this is the thing that they’re known for,” he said. “It’d be like saying you support flying the Nazi flag because you’re proud of their robust anti-smoking agenda. But that wasn’t really their thing.”

So what flag can go up in its place? Stewart suggests something we can all get behind: a pig on fire — honoring the creation of barbecue.

“That’s probably how barbecue was invented,” he said. “Ingenious southerners saw a pig on fire and thought, ‘I can work with this.'”

See his full takedown of the flag, as well as an image of its possible replacement, in the clip above.

John Oliver Tells The South Exactly Where It Can Stick The Confederate Flag

John Oliver said there’s really only one purpose for the Confederate flag.

“The Confederate flag is one of those symbols that really should only be seen on T-shirts, belt buckles and bumper stickers to help the rest of us identify the worst people in the world,” Oliver said Sunday on “Last Week Tonight.”

After 21-year-old white supremacist Dylann Roof allegedly killed nine black churchgoers in Charleston last week, the U.S. and South Carolina flags flew at half staff over the state’s Capitol. But the nearby Confederate flag flew high, which led to a growing call that it should be removed.

Several Republican presidential candidates have said the decision to fly the Confederate flag should be left up to individual states. Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) said the flag represents the Civil War to some, but admits “it has been used in a racist way.”

Oliver agreed.

“I believe the first time the Confederate flag was used in a racist way was the exact second they finished sewing the very first one,” he said. “It was around that time.”

Oliver had some suggestions for what to do with the flag flying near the South Carolina Capitol, and every other Confederate flag. Check it out in the clip above.

South Bend Mayor: Why Coming Out Matters

This post originally appeared on the South Bend Tribune

Any day now, the Supreme Court will issue a decision on same-sex marriage that will directly affect millions of Americans. It comes at a time of growing public acceptance and support for equal rights. But no matter what the Court does, issues of equality are hardly settled across the country. Today, it remains legal in most parts of Indiana (though not South Bend) to fire someone simply for being gay, and bullying still contributes to tragically high suicide rates among LGBT teens.

Still, our country is headed in a clear overall direction, and swiftly. Today, 57 percent of Americans support same-sex marriage; just 15 years ago, the reverse was true. Experiences with friends or family members coming out have helped millions of Americans to see past stereotypes and better understand what being gay is — and is not. Being gay isn’t something you choose, but you do face choices about whether and how to discuss it. For most of our history, most Americans had no idea how many people they knew and cared about were gay.

My high school in South Bend had nearly a thousand students. Statistically, that means that several dozen were gay or lesbian. Yet, when I graduated in 2000, I had yet to encounter a single openly LGBT student there. That’s far less likely to be the case now, as more students come to feel that their families and community will support and care for them no matter what. This is a tremendously positive development: young people who feel support and acceptance will be less likely to harm themselves, and more likely to step into adulthood with mature self-knowledge.

I was well into adulthood before I was prepared to acknowledge the simple fact that I am gay. It took years of struggle and growth for me to recognize that it’s just a fact of life, like having brown hair, and part of who I am.

Putting something this personal on the pages of a newspaper does not come easy. We Midwesterners are instinctively private to begin with, and I’m not used to viewing this as anyone else’s business.

But it’s clear to me that at a moment like this, being more open about it could do some good. For a local student struggling with her sexuality, it might be helpful for an openly gay mayor to send the message that her community will always have a place for her. And for a conservative resident from a different generation, whose unease with social change is partly rooted in the impression that he doesn’t know anyone gay, perhaps a familiar face can be a reminder that we’re all in this together as a community.

Still one year before President Barack Obama even announced his support for same-sex marriage, the risks for these queers in the south — which could (and still can) range from intimidation to physical violence — were high. In fact, many of the subjects chose not to reveal their faces in Sherer’s photos.

Now, “Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South” has become an important historical document that shows the public LGBT families exist and thrive in all parts of America — even its most conservative pockets.

The Huffington Post spoke with Sherer this week about the legacy of the project and what she was trying to accomplish by bringing visibility to these experiences. Check out photos from “Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South” along with Sherer’s interview below.

What was your overarching vision for this “Lesbians Living In The Deep South”?
In terms of content, my work is about authenticity and a search for common humanity in marginalized groups. I am interested in exploring issues of identity and always work in series to document individual stories to create a composite portrait of a community.

In this case, a specific incident inspired me to put a face on my previously invisible lesbian community in Birmingham, Alabama. When my friend was keeping vigil by her partner’s hospital deathbed, the brother of her beloved locked Kay out of their home. The police had to let her into the house to get a change of clothes to wear to the funeral. Worse, at the memorial service their close heterosexual friends said they did not know the couple was gay — or that gay people could be treated that way in Alabama. I realized that the distinctly southern “don’t’ ask, don’t tell” culture had to end.

Conceptually, I fretted about how to make the work in a way that the participants could feel safe. I departed from my tradition of environmental portraits to make studio shots. Yes, the format provides the viewer the opportunity to focus on intimacy and relationships, but it was also a practical decision in terms of protecting participant privacy. It’s important to understand that this work was created in 2011 in a deeply conservative southern state. I did not know the potential for consequences, and at the time it felt quite risky to many of the women I approached. Each family decided to face the camera or not, and whether to include any children in the family. They were given complete control of their environment, choosing what to wear and how to stand. While being photographed, participants were asked to focus on their feelings about three words delivered in series: Lesbian, Pride and Prejudice.

Who are the individuals featured in these photographs?
40 lesbian families with diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds — all with roots in the Birmingham, Alabama area. The act of participation in most cases was a decision to come out of the closet — at least in more public circles.

It was my coming out story too.

kay barbara

Did these families have any hesitation or worries about taking part in this series?
Initially, yes, many of my friends refused to participate due to fear of consequences. After the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) agreed to show the work and I got public endorsements from the Birmingham Museum of Art and Southern Poverty Law Center, things loosened up considerably. The value of the early support of BCRI can’t be underestimated. Remarkably, this work was already on the walls in 2012 when President Obama and the NAACP endorsed gay marriage. It attracted nearly 17,000 visitors in a two-month run and prompted much private and public dialogue about who is entitled to equality.

Why is visibility such as this important for LGBT people living in the south?
The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is hosting travel of “Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South” as part of its mission to advocate for human and civil rights. In spite of the fact that they live in the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, the LGBTQ community in Alabama lacks a single law protecting them from discrimination. People do still lose jobs and child custody because of their sexual or gender identity. I hope that individuals living in liberal areas of the country can remain aware of the implications of making equality a state’s rights issue.

I want the viewer to feel a quiet intimacy, and wonder about the reality of the lives of the people they see.

South Africa’s Bala Brothers set sights on U.S. music market

By Alicia Powell NEW YORK (Reuters) – With their mix of gospel and R&B songs, the classically trained Bala Brothers are stars at home in South Africa but Loyiso, Zwai and Phelo have set their sights on a new international audience and are planning a tour in the United States. Growing up in Kwa-Nobuhle township outside Port Elizabeth, the brothers have been known at home since the eldest, Zwai, broke the color barrier of South Africa’s famed Drakensberg Boys Choir by becoming its first black member in 1988. In February, U.S. broadcaster PBS aired a special concert featuring the trio, which the brothers, who sing in English and the Xhosa language, say exposed them to a new audience. “We really hope that it will take us beyond (where) any other South African or African actor ever stepped.

South Carolina Cop Charged With Murder For Shooting Unarmed Black Man [VIDEO]

The name Walter Scott will inevitably become the new headliner of the #BlackLivesMatter campaign as he was tragically gunned down by a South Carolina police officer on Saturday, April 4.

As we have grown accustomed to, Scott was unarmed at the time of the incident. The cop, 33-year-old Michael T. Slager, has been charged with murder and the video footage supports the accusation.

The New York Times has the details:

A white police officer in North Charleston, S.C., was charged with murder on Tuesday after a video surfaced showing him shooting and killing an apparently unarmed black man in the back while he ran away.

The officer, Michael T. Slager, 33, had said he feared for his life because the man took his stun gun in a scuffle after a traffic stop on Saturday. A video, however, shows the officer firing eight times as the man — Walter L. Scott, 50 — fled.

The North Charleston mayor announced the state charges at a news conference Tuesday evening.

The shooting comes on the heels of high-profile incidents of police officers using lethal force in New York, Cleveland, Ferguson, Mo., and elsewhere around the country. The deaths have sparked a national debate over whether police are too quick to use force, particularly in cases involving black men.

A White House task force has recommended a host of changes to the nation’s police policies, and President Obama dispatched Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., to cities around the country to try to improve police relations with minority neighborhoods.

North Charleston is the state’s third-largest city with a population of about 100,000. African-Americans make up about 47 percent of residents, and whites account for about 37 percent. The city police department is about 80 percent white, according to data collected by the Justice Department in 2007, the most recent period available.

“When you’re wrong, you’re wrong,” Mayor Keith Summey said of the shooting during the news conference. “And if you make a bad decision, don’t care if you’re behind the shield or just a citizen on the street, you have to live by that decision.”

The shooting unfolded after Officer Slager stopped the driver of a Mercedes-Benz with a broken taillight, according to police reports. Mr. Scott ran away, and Officer Slager chased him into a grassy lot that abuts a muffler shop. He fired his Taser, an electronic stun gun, but it did not stop Mr. Scott, according to police reports.

Moments after the struggle, Officer Slager reported on his radio, “Shots fired and the subject is down. He took my Taser,” according to police reports.

But the video, which was taken by a bystander and provided to The New York Times by Mr. Scott’s lawyer, presents a different account. The video begins in the vacant lot, apparently moments after Officer Slager fired his Taser. Wires, which carry the electrical current from the stun gun, appear to be extending from Mr. Scott’s body as the two men tussle and Mr. Scott turns to run.

Something — it is not clear whether it is the stun gun — is either tossed or knocked to the ground behind the two men and Officer Slager draws his gun, the video shows. When the officer fires, Mr. Scott appears to be 15 to 20 feet away and fleeing. He falls after the last of eight shots.

The officer then runs back toward where the initial scuffle occurred and picks something off the ground. Moments later, he drops an object near Mr. Scott’s body, the video shows.

Even with the video evidence, we all witnessed firsthand the cops who killed Eric Garner get let off the hook. The entire world–including Hip-Hop Wired–will be watching this case very closely.

Where Is the Next Fashion Capital of the South?

I spend about a third of my life in New Orleans, a city unlike any other in the United States, that I have come to love and call “second home.” The things that come to mind are music, food, and Mardi Gras – but New Orleans was recently called the South’s “next fashion capital” in Southern Living Magazine. And indeed, the fashion scene in New Orleans is thriving. One of its most active promoters is the multi-talented and extremely fashionable Andi Eaton, founder, NOLA Fashion Week, designer, Hazel & Florange, and blogger, Oui We. I am lucky enough to call her a friend, and asked her over coffee this weekend to tell me more about New Orleans’ (Louisiana’s) up and coming fashion designers. Here are, in her own words, the ones to watch (and shop!):

1. Anthony Ryan Auld: Baton Rouge native and Project Runway All-Star winner designs under the label Anthony Ryan, Auld creates innovative fashions to inspire the modern woman with clean lines, definitive shapes and bold fabric selections. He nailed it on Project Runway and does so time and time again on the NOLA Fashion Week runways. Available online here

2. Matthew Arthur: Another Louisiana native and Project Runway alum designing “unapologetic” and climate appropriate womenswear and menswear under the label “Mattingsworth.” The line has recently expanded to include custom swimwear in unique fabrics appropriate for an afternoon pool party. Available at Hazel & Florange studio and online

3. Lisa Iacono: In New Orleans, a go-to resource for garment making is NOLA Sewn, owned by Iacono, herself a designer and NYC expat. “Garment making is still very much a living art and cultural pride here, more so than any other city I’ve lived [in],” Iacono told Women’s Wear Daily in regard to the apparel industry movement in New Orleans. Iacono is single-handedly giving the local apparel industry a boost by being the manufacturing home for upwards of 20 southern designers. Available online here

4. Suzanne Perron: Designer to the Mardi Gras Queens, Debutantes and Society Brides of New Orleans, Perron spent more than a decade in New York City on Fashion Avenue. Working for some of the most highly regarded design houses including Carolina Herrera and Vera Wang, she earned her stripes — well, her crinoline and silk actually — and then returned home to open an atelier specializing in “once-in-a-lifetime gowns in white and ivory.” Available via her website

5. Jolie & Elizabeth: With a focus on seersucker, cottons and feminine styles and shapes each J&E dress is manufactured in New Orleans. The designers pride themselves on “contributing to the rebuilding, revitalization and redevelopment of New Orleans and the great state of Louisiana.” Shop

6. Amanda deLeon: Inspired by music and architecture, invoking a deeply romantic and emotional connection, deLeon’s designs are highly intricate (think hundreds upon hundreds of sequins per dress) and flawlessly constructed. DeLeon hand makes each garment, and was recently named a Designer to Watch at New York Fashion Week. Available here

7. Kallen Forster: Designing under the label The Design Lab, Forster’s mission is to employ and educate women in low-income communities to develop skills for a career path in the apparel industry. Available here and Noelie Harmon boutique.

8. Leigh Kellogg and Crickett Lapeyre: The duo behind the lady like and vintage inspired line Libellule, each bring a unique skill set and a serious amount of talent to the line. Kellogg’s background is in textile conservation and costuming, while Lapeyre comes from the world of international acrobatics. The aesthetic eye of each makes for beautifully constructed garments. In 2013 the duo launched a second line Peony, fine children’s clothing. Shop

9. Natalie Bendy: Designer behind the plus-size line Dama Talya, Natalie works in partnership with her mother Kim, and creates figure-flattering garments that accentuate a woman’s curves with feminine fabrications and cuts. Available here

10. Erin Tufts: Tufts’ line of handbags, Rorin, is made locally in New Orleans and her obsession with quality shines through her products. Tufts works in leathers including lambskin and embossed crocodile and focuses on the fine details to perfect each bag. Prior to launching Rorin, Tufts designed womenswear as a part of the duo behind the line Nire Collection. Available online and in the Hazel & Florange studio.
