Earlier this week, popular Hip-Hop website HipHopDX found themselves on the wrong end of 50 Cent‘s legal attention after running a piece with an unauthorized photo. As he promised, the rapper and mogul filed a lawsuit against the site over the photo.
He’s filed suit against HipHopDX for its post about Fiddy allegedly selling his catchphrase, “Get the strap,” to Bellator MMA. We’ll get back to the catchphrase, but the rapper’s real issue is with the photo the blog used.
According to the suit, obtained by TMZ, the pic — showing 50 Cent with Bellator execs — was taken on June 25 by a guy named Christopher Conrad. 50 says Conrad gave him rights to the photo on June 28. His point … at no point did HipHopDX have rights to publish the pic.
The site posted an article on June 27, calling out 50 Cent for claiming he sold “Get the strap” to the MMA league for $ 1 million. That same day, 50 said, “This s**t is fake news Justin Ivey (the writer), you better go fact check. Matter of fact I’m gonna sue you and this website for using my picture.”
Might seem unfair to those outside the online journalism game, but that’s how it goes. Consent to use photos and buying snaps from reputable agencies is the safest way to go.

Burberry is out to defend its most recognizable asset: its signature check print.
The British fashion house filed a trademark infringement and counterfeiting lawsuit against Target last week in New York federal court, alleging that the retailer has been selling products that bear “blatant reproductions” of its trademark check, a print introduced in the 1920s and used on countless designs since.
According to the suit, Burberry sent Target a cease-and-desist letter in early 2017 after finding “unauthorized copies” of the pattern on items in the chain’s stores including eyewear, luggage and water bottles. Rather than complying with the letter, Burberry alleges, Target several months later began selling scarves — a Burberry mainstay — also bearing the check print, which were “superficially indistinguishable” from the real deal (albeit at a small fraction of the price).
The crux of the case is the potential for confusion — for instance, could Target shoppers see the products on shelves and believe that they were genuine Burberry items? The fashion house argues yes, particularly because of the big-box retailer’s history of collaborating with high-end designers. Beyond its most recent capsule collection with British heritage rainboot brand Hunter, Target has worked with designers including Prabal Gurung, Peter Pilotto and

Travis Scott claims he was a victim of the jig. The “Antidote” rapper is suing a car dealership for allegedly finessing him out of $ 70 large for a non-existent Lamborghini.
The rapper’s suing Richard Martinez, VIP Services and Jorge Maldonado … claiming they were all in cahoots to swindle him out of the cash. In docs, obtained by TMZ, Travis says he wanted to buy a 2015 Lamborghini Huracan from Maldonado, who then hired Martinez and his VIP Services to broker a deal.
Travis said he trusted Martinez because he claimed to have brokered dozens of deals for high-profile figures … including the Kardashians. But to close the deal, Travis claims Martinez told him to wire a $ 70k deposit. Travis did, but months went by and there was no Lambo to show for it.
The rapper suspects Maldonado was paid to bring him to Martinez so he could pull off the scam. So, he’s suing them to get his money back.
Sounds like Travis Scott has a case.

Floyd Mayweather and his ex-girlfriend Shantel Jackson have been at odds legally for some time with Jackson accusing Mayweather domestic abuse and other claims. The legendary boxer came back with his own legal counterpunch and filed a lawsuit against Jackson alleging she stole cash and credit cards to buy lavish gifts for herself.
TMZ Sports reports:
According to docs, obtained by TMZ Sports, Shantel got access to Floyd’s credit card accounts, and scooped cash around his house, to go on personal shopping sprees. He claims she shipped all her illicit booty to a secret location to keep him in the dark.
Floyd claims Shantel would praise him in public when he got bad press purely to gain his confidence. In the docs, his lawyer writes … “As a result of that confidence, Mayweather, who’s education ended at eighth grade, did not audit or otherwise inspect either his cash or his credit card statements for theft by Jackson.”
(NOTE: Floyd’s reps tell us his lawyer has it wrong … he left school in the 12th grade, not 8th.)
Translation: She pulled a rope-a-dope, and yeah … Floyd was the dope.
The outlet adds that Mayweather only found out about Jackson’s alleged thievery by way of a mutual friend.

Rich Homie Quan is set to go to war with his label and the founder, Girvan Henry and Think It’s A Game Entertainment, LLC.
The rapper, whose real name is Dequantes Lamar, seems more than $ 2 million in unpaid eargings from Henry and TIG. He has also severed ties with them as well.
According to court documents filed today with the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta Division, Quan alleged he TIG Entertainment violated a partnership agreement that would sell his music. A press release future details his grievances.
Court documents outline 12-counts that claim Henry has not accounted for, nor paid monies earned by Quan, including royalties, for at least four albums, which featured songs including “Flex” and RIAA Gold Certified, international hit “Type of Way.” The suit names Def Jam Recordings via a partnership with Henry, and Trinidad James’ record label, Gold Gang Music Group, LLC, by which Def Jam paid Henry and Gold Gang $ 550,000 and distributed “Type of Way.” Quan says Henry and Gold Gang had no rights to the song’s masters and he never signed a record deal with Def Jam or Gold Gang.
Rich Homie Quan also charges that Henry misappropriated funds derived Def Jam for “Type of Way” and bought a home in Atlanta. The suit also claims that Henry used Fly Merchandise to sell and profit from merchandise with Quan’s logo on it.
In addition, Quan claims that Henry, through Fly Merchandise Enterprises, LLC fraudulently claimed ownership of a logo that included Quan’s name and Henry profited from the use of that logo.
Henry misrepresented ownership of Rich Homie Quan’s name, likeness and logo marks by filing two trademark applications with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (U.S. Reg. Nos. 4,483,756 and 4,746,133).
Quan’s litigation attorney, Leron Rogers said: “Unfortunately this is a classic case of a music artist being ripped off by those claiming to have his best interest in mind. Quan has more than delivered on his part of the partnership, delivering hit songs that have sold hundreds of thousands of copies. Mr. Henry has taken advantage of Quan, and now it’s time for him to receive his just due.”
“Quan has worked really hard to achieve his vision of becoming a successful artist. He deserves to be compensated in a fair and just manner. While it is unfortunate that he has had to seek resolution of this issue through the legal system, we fully expect that justice will prevail,” co-counsel, Brianna Williams of Mélange, a Williams Firm.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Model Janice Dickinson sued Bill Cosby for defamation on Wednesday over denials made by the comedian’s representatives after she accused him last year of raping her in 1982.
Dickinson’s lawsuit seeks unspecified damages on defamation, false light and intentional infliction of emotional distress claims. The suit states Dickinson has been re-victimized and her reputation has suffered because of pointed denials by Cosby’s attorney that the comedian drugged and raped her in a Lake Tahoe, California, hotel room more than 30 years ago. The allegations were first made in an interview with “Entertainment Tonight” after numerous other women accused Cosby of drugging them and inappropriate sexual conduct dating back several decades.
The lawsuit states Dickinson, 60, sought a retraction of the denials from Cosby, but the request was denied.
An email sent to Cosby’s attorney Martin Singer was not immediately returned. Singer called Dickinson’s rape allegations “false and outlandish” in a letter to The Associated Press last year.
The lawsuit details Dickinson’s allegations that Cosby raped her after giving her wine and a pill in the hotel room, and how she wanted to go public with her story in a 2002 autobiography but was prevented from doing so by the book’s publisher.
She did not report the incident to police in the early 1980s out of fear of retaliation by Cosby, her lawsuit states. The statute of limitations to criminally prosecute the actor-comedian has long since passed, as has the statute on civil claims directly related to the incident.
“This is Janice Dickinson’s chance for justice,” her attorney Lisa Bloom said Wednesday.
Three women who have accused Cosby of abuse have sued him for defamation in a Massachusetts federal court.
One of the women, Therese Serignese, said after a court hearing earlier this month that she wanted her reputation restored after Cosby’s camp branded her a liar.
Dickinson’s lawsuit is seeking a similar outcome.
“Cosby knows that he drugged and raped Ms. Dickinson,” the lawsuit states. “He knew that calling her rape disclosure a lie was a false statement.”

Planet Fitness is facing a lawsuit for not being discriminatory. Really.
Yvette Cormier, whose membership at a Planet Fitness in Midland, Michigan was canceled earlier this month when she made a stink about a transgender woman’s use of the women’s locker room, is suing the gym chain for more than $ 25,000 on counts of invasion of privacy, sexual harassment and breach of contract, to name a few.
Cormier’s displeasure with Planet Fitness made headlines after she complained to staff about the trans woman’s use of the locker room. The gym defended the woman’s right to use whichever locker room she identifies with, but Cormier didn’t let it rest: she proceeded to tell other gym-goers about the woman because she reportedly felt “unsafe.”
“If you have male parts you don’t need to be in the women’s locker room,” she told CNN. “I don’t care what you are; I don’t care if you’re gay lesbian, transgender or transvestite. I am uncomfortable with you as a male in my locker room, in my restroom.”
The gym, which touts itself as a “judgement free zone,” ultimately canceled Cormier’s membership citing “inappropriate and disruptive” behavior.
“Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members,” the company said in a statement to The Huffington Post at the time. “Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity.”
Cormier filed her lawsuit against Planet Fitness Monday in Midland County Circuit Court.
A press release from her attorneys with the Kallman Legal Group in Lansing claims that Planet Fitness creates a “hostile and offensive environment for women and children.”
“Ms. Cormier was wrongfully denied the benefits of her contract with Planet Fitness and wrongfully denied the use of the public accommodations at Defendant’s gym because she objected to Defendant’s unknown policy,” the press release states. “The policy allows men who self-identify as women to use the women’s facilities, including the women’s locker room and showers.”
After the initial incident, the anti-LGBT American Family Association spoke out in defense of Cormier’s reaction, saying, “Planet Fitness is making the needs of its female members subservient to the sexual identification of transgender individuals.”

A Bowie State University student is suing Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. According to a lawsuit by Kevin Hayes, he was hazed while pledging the historically African-American frat and is seeking $ 3 million in damages.
Reports CBS Baltimore:
A 17-page lawsuit details how the student—a junior at Bowie State—says he was punched and paddled by other fraternity members.
Photos show the injuries 20-year-old Kevin Hayes says he sustained while pledging Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at Bowie State University.
“It broke me down. It’s something I never felt before,” he said.
He says his punishers were other fraternity members.
“Something must happen so no one else has to deal with these issues,” Hayes said.
In the lawsuit, Hayes says nights of pledging could last five to eight hours, where he was “punched, hit and slapped.”
“They have a duty under Maryland law to make him safe,” said Jimmy Bell, his attorney.
Hazing is not tolerated by the national organization of Alpha Phi Alpha, which is headquartered in Baltimore.
A statement on the organization’s official website reads, “Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. strictly prohibits hazing in any form whether physical or mental as a term or condition of membership in the organization. Hazing is illegal and a crime in most jurisdictions. Aspirants to the organization should participate only in the sanctioned membership process of the Fraternity. Aspirants must not agree to submit to hazing in order to obtain Fraternity membership.”
Besides hazing, filing a lawsuit is certainly not the best way to get into a fraternity. That should go without saying.
The incident allegedly went down off campus starting in September 2013 until November of the same year.
According to the lawsuit, Hayes and other pledges were give “jewel shockers,” “back racks,” and “fat joes,” and beaten with paddles.
