‘Adrift’ showcases Shailene Woodley in harrowing survival tale

“Adrift” is a two-tiered throwback — a stirring, at times grueling portrait of survival, and an old-fashioned showcase for star-producer Shailene Woodley. It mostly works on both levels, although more casual film-goers might understandably opt to catch this TV-movie-style true story after it’s sailed out of theaters.

The Tale Of Mrs. Zhu

By Giovanni N. Ciullo.
©Photography by Max Cardelli

Zhu Chongyun, the Chinese fashion tycoon who bought you Krizia, talks about herself: from her childhood to her degree in engineering and her dream of becoming a fashion designer. What began with a few yuan became a $ 400 million business.

2015-06-18-1434654294-4628440-Zhu1.jpg

Born in Hangzhou in 1964, Zhu Chongyun is head of the Marisfrolg group. Top and trousers, Zhuchongyun. Styling Rachele Bagnato, make-up Miriam Langellotti for Lord&Berry, hair Beppe D’Elia for Beautick.

Mrs. Zhu had her back to us. She moved lightly, apparently fragile, a long black braid running down the back of the dress she designed herself. She lead us down a corridor to the mirrored steel room where we were to talk. Then she turned and smileed, as she does often, with the politeness of a master of ceremonies. Pale skin, black glasses, with a simple, classic elegance, she seems painted in watercolors.

Chongyun Zhu was born in Hangzhou 50 years ago, but looks at least 15 yours younger. At the time of the five Dynasties and Ten Kin- gdoms, her city was one of the seven capitals of China. Numbers surround this tycoon, who before discovering fashion wanted to be a scientist, and who according to Forbes has a personal fortune of a billion and a half dollars (making her one the richest individuals in the Celestial Empire). She is the president and creative director of a clothing company, the Marisfrolg Fashion Co., $ 400 million in revenue, 500 stores and 6,000 employees. Last year Marisfrolg acquired an iconic Italian brand: Krizia (for a reputed $ 35 million).

2015-06-18-1434654330-4252279-Zhu2.jpg

We met Mrs. Zhu in the historic headquarters of the Milanese fashion house founded by Mariuccia Mandelli, at number 21 Via Manin.

“I’m just trying to be quite ready to meet this challenge. It is not easy in life to have the opportunity to start another adventure, and so I feel fortunate,” she told us with seraphic calm. When I bought Krizia, many said: ‘If you are in such a strong position in China, what makes you want to start again in Italy?’ But for me success is the right launching pad for more success. My basic philosophy is this: slowness is speed. And vice versa. If you have built a solid foundation calmly, you can afford to decide the next moves rapidly. And run.”

2015-06-18-1434654361-8975868-Zhu3.jpg

Zhu Chongyun gestured and smiled, creating an empathy that made up for whatever was lost in translation. She spoke in Chinese and a translator helped us to decipher a language that just sounded like music to us.

“I discovered Krizia a little over 10 years ago. It was the first time I had traveled in Europe and I was struck by the design and fabrics. I decided to buy it because of its history of creativity, because it is a noble and feminine brand (the name comes from a Platonic dialogue on vanity, Ed.), but also because I found that its aesthetic tastes were very close to my own. Later, the real surprise came when I opened its archives and discovered a marvelous world.”

2015-06-18-1434654593-6470243-Zhu4.jpg

Animal prints, wide sleeves curved shapes. But the immediate goal, she said, is change with continuity.

“Each brand must remain true to its spirit, but renewal is critical to keep the interest of those who love you. While Kri- zia’s strength lies in its history, its weakness is having stopped for a while. The first thing I did, therefore, was to work on its resources, on the team, on the suppliers. It is an honor for me to be here and I hope in the end that people will say that Zhu did not betray the spirit of Krizia but managed to renew it and make it contemporary.”

Then she added, as if apologizing aloud: “And I was so focused on this challenge that often I only remembered to call my family late in the day, when in China it was already too late.”

Mrs. Zhu has a husband and two daughters and speaks of her family with pride and gratitude.

“I got married at 33, but I had been looking for love, rather like success, for a long time before it finally arrived. The years when you are always falling in love are wonderful, and I think about them with some regret. But I follow my feelings and I did so with my husband. What’s he like? A good, intelligent man, who understands me well and shares my values. My daughters, on the other hand, are dynamic, good at sports and courageous. I see a lot of myself in the choices they make, although at their age China was very different and I had far more rigid limitations to overcome.”

She confessed that as a child she was interested in all sorts of things and was something of a tomboy.

“I enjoyed science: mathematics, physics and chemistry. And I was very good at manual things. What did I dream of? To be chosen one day as a ‘model worker,” to be recognized all over the country.”

And fashion? “I wasn’t interested at all. I thought only about studying. But my mother, who had always had a great sense of style, tried to dress me well.”

2015-06-18-1434654633-4785243-Zhu5.jpg

Something changed right after she enrolled in college to study mechanical engineering.

“I didn’t find any clothes I liked, and so, because of those manual skills, I began to buy cloth for a few RMB (renminbi or yuan, literally ‘the people’s currency’ Ed.) and immediately turned it into skirts and bags. The people around me started asking me where I got my clothes or found my inspiration. So I started designing clothes for others. And I have never stopped.”

In fact, the story is rather longer than that. And it is full of hard choices, of crossroads, but Zhu Chongyun always knew which way to turn. Starting when, degree in hand, she convinced her parents –- teachers from a family of teachers -– to accept that she would not follow in their footsteps. “I asked my mother to let me go and explore the world. I spent my time at university reading newspapers and drinking tea. It was not my life. Of course, in the China of the time, giving up a government job was a strange thing to do, especially for a girl.”

2015-06-18-1434654665-9111303-Zhu6.jpg

There followed years of construction sites and workshops, with Zhu the engineer putting up with unhealthy environments and infernal noise. Then while working in a company in the food sector she discovered management.

“I was in charge of acquisitions, sales and brand image. And in six months, the turnover tripled,” she recalled.

She also discovered a talent for problem-solving. Until the time came for the final change.

“A friend told me about a clothing company in Shenzhen, at the time the promised land for young people looking to make their fortunes. The company was looking for someone who had experience in the sector and a degree in design. ‘You don’t have either of those,’ I told myself. ‘If you fill in the form you’re finished.’ The only thing to do was to talk to the general manager and let him know how much determination and how many ideas I had. So I did and I was hired.”

We looked around. The tale of the self-made woman had attracted the attention of her collaborators. She noticed and said: “It has always been important for me to build a culture in my company. We dedicate most our days and our lives to work. So for me it is important to have a healthy environment and, this may be utopian, even a happy one. Making beautiful things is meaningless if we don’t enjoy sharing them with others.”

That is why she is constructing a new, futuristic headquarters in Shenzhen where the spirit of its founder will be translated into a spa and hotel for employees and their relatives. Here in Milan, however, having decided that the Krizia HQ will remain in Via Manin (“It’s a beautiful place”), Mrs. Zhu has tried from the start to make it clear what she means by a team-family.

“Often I cook for everyone, but I shouldn’t say that too loudly because when I am at home I almost never go into the kitchen.”

And how did she see the future? Needless to say, Mrs. Zhu has a ready answer.

“I think I’ll go on working like this until I’m 60, then I’ll try to enjoy life in a different way. I won’t retire from the company, of course, but I’ll no longer be the only one in charge. But I want what I have achieved to be recognized, especially by young peo- ple, to give them hope and get them back to believing in a world of opportunity. Who knows, maybe I’ll end up teaching, just like my parents wanted me to many years ago. Each stage of life is different from the one before: as a little girl I was a tomboy and I wanted to be a scientist, as a young woman I was a romantic engineer, at 30 I was an aspiring manager who designed clothes, and now I am an entrepreneur full of passion. In the future, having neglected my daughters, perhaps I will compensate by being a grandmother. But I also want to travel more, make new friends. I haven’t yet had time to dream the next dream, but I know there is one.”

A Tale of Two Children: My Path to Fatherhood, and the Psychic Who Saw It Before I Did

Despite keeping a copy of “The Power of Now” by my bed for years, I have always been more into the future than the present. Maybe that’s why I love the idea of psychics. Years ago, I was at lunch with a friend when she mentioned in passing that her assistant’s mother, who was a psychic, was coming to stay with her for the weekend. Without missing a beat, I made an appointment to see this California Cassandra. I had gone to my share of psychics in the past, but I never took them very seriously. I didn’t really believe the guy who told me I was a rock star in my last life (though I did check the date of Elvis and Jim Morrison’s deaths just in case). Nor did I believe the tea leaf reader in New Orleans who told me someone in my family would die within two years (he was wrong, and a jerk). Still, I loved hearing the prophecies of psychics, astrologers and tea leaf readers. Eckhart Tolle and his power of now had nothing on the power of later.

I arrived at my friend’s house and settled myself into the garden with her assistant’s mother, a glamorous older woman with big hair, long lashes, and an unsettling smile. She immediately began by describing my family in such precise detail that it chilled me. Still, I remained dubious. Toward the end of the session, I asked her if she saw children in my future. The psychic’s eyes shot up toward the sky and she began to laugh. “Oh yes,” she said. “I can see your daughter now. She’s a hoot. She has dark, curly hair. Oh, she’s a hoot.” I told her I was in the process of adopting. “Oh you’re not going to adopt,” she said. “You’re going to have biological children.”

“I don’t think so,” I said. “I’ve already decided to adopt.”

The psychic was resolute in her prediction. “You will have biological children,” she said. “Definitely a girl. But I see a boy as well, he’s just not coming through as strongly.” Then she added a twist. “A friend will offer to carry your children soon.”

“That’s crazy,” I said. “Who would do that?”

A few months later, a friend of mine offered to be my surrogate. It took me a moment to recover from the offer, not just because of its generosity, but because what I thought was an insane prediction had come to pass. I put the adoption on hold. Unfortunately, my friend and I didn’t have a successful pregnancy. Needing reassurance, I called whom else but the psychic. She assured me that everything would work out. This time, she said she definitely saw both a girl and a boy. Once again, she told me my girl was “a hoot.”

My adoption case was now on hold, and I had sperm sitting in a freezer at a doctor’s office. Rather than go back to the adoption agency, I decided to approach a surrogacy agency instead. Within a year, I had a surrogate who was pregnant with twins. Three months into the pregnancy, I was told that one of my children was a boy, but the second child’s gender was still unknown. In the back of my mind was the psychic’s voice, telling me she could see my daughter with her dark curly hair. I waited anxiously to find out the gender of my second child, in part because I was fascinated to find out if the psychic was right. Six months into the pregnancy, the ultrasound revealed that my second child was a girl.

When I think back to how tightly I held onto the words of this long-lashed clairvoyant, I wonder if her predictions came true because she saw my future, or because she implanted ideas in me that I turned into self-fulfilling prophecies. I am reminded of a story I read as a child about a man who goes to see a psychic. The psychic tells the man that he will murder someone in his lifetime. The man has a miserable life. He won’t open himself to intimacy of any kind because he fears he will kill those he loves. In his old age, the man runs into the psychic on a dock. Feeling that the psychic destroyed his life, the man kills him and fulfills the prophecy. Like the man in the story, perhaps I simply manifested what I was told would happen.

I suppose that if she played a part in my manifesting my life as it is, I must thank her because I wouldn’t want any other children than the ones I have. Still, despite the fact that there’s a woman out there who seemed capable of seeing my curly-haired hoot of a daughter pre-naissance, I haven’t called her, or any other psychic, since my children were born. I don’t really need anyone to tell me what’s next for my family. I’m enjoying the adventure too much to worry about what’s next. I guess being a parent has finally taught me to live in the now and stop living in the later.

A Tale of Two Horror Films

Look at the bottom of this post and you’ll see the images of two teenage lead actresses in recent horror films: one is the star of Insidious 3; the other, the star of It Follows. Both have reason to fear.

That’s just about everything these two films — one a triumph, the other trash — have in common.

Let’s start by throwing out the trash.

What’s most insidious about Insidious 3 is that a movie producer green-lit and expects audiences to pay to see one of the most boring and lazy horror movies in recent memory, especially when you consider the general high quality of the Insidious franchise. The story centers on a pretty girl who somehow gets herself haunted by a spirit who enjoys pushing, grabbing, dropping, pulling, dragging and all but drop-kicking her. Oh, and she’s really, really dumb.

There’s no point in saying much more than “Don’t Go!”, but don’t hold it against Insidious 1 and Insidious 2, which were actually inventive, spooky flicks with solid narrative backbones. They were directed by the seasoned James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell, who teamed up to bring us Saw.

Insidious 3 was helmed by Whannell alone — in his directorial debut — and the inexperience shows. In the only measurement that truly counts, I3 is about as scary as a Halloween candy commercial, but not nearly as entertaining.

Way on the other end of the quality spectrum — though released last March, so you’ll probably have to catch it on cable — is It Follows, David Robert Mitchell’s well-crafted and award-winning horror film about a demonic entity following a pack of teenagers one at a time, in the guise of various slow-moving but menacing strangers.

That description makes the film sound hopelessly cheesy — especially considering the “curse” is transferred from teenager to teenager sexually. But the scares are patiently and expertly staged and, even more importantly, Mitchell manages to inject an extreme sense of spooky desperation and paranoia that makes the entire 100-minute experience creepy and compelling from beginning to end.

Basically, take that sinking feeling that a stranger is following you down a dark and isolated road, multiply it by a hundred, and buckle in. Extra points for cinematography and music that deliberately makes the film seem like a grungy thriller from the 1980s, and complex, realistic characters who aren’t all either virtuous saints or wise-cracking jerks, as we’ve come to expect from this genre.

An ambiguous ending makes this movie all the more unpolished and un-Hollywood – which amps up the creepiness even more.

As a horror fan since I was a little boy, and a horror screenwriter myself, I can boil it down to this: Insidious 3, like so many films, fails because it sells horror as the cause of fear. It Follows succeeds because it presents fear — not knowing what to expect, yet expecting it nonetheless — as the cause of horror.

The novel depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralised by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same time period. It follows the lives of several characters through these events.

"Dolphin Tale 2" continues the story of the brave dolphin Winter, whose miraculous rescue and recovery-thanks to a groundbreaking prosthetic tail-made her a symbol of hope and perseverance to people around the world and inspired the 2011 hit movie "Dolphin Tale." It has been several years since young Sawyer Nelson and the dedicated team at the Clearwater Marine Hospital, headed by Dr. Clay Haskett, rescued Winter. Yet their fight is not over. Winter's surrogate mother, the very elderly dolphin Panama, has passed away, leaving Winter without the only poolmate she has ever known. However, the loss of Panama may have even greater repercussions for Winter, who, according to USDA regulations, cannot be housed alone, as dolphins' social behavior requires them to be paired with other dolphins. Time is running out to find a companion for her before the team at Clearwater loses their beloved Winter to another aquarium.
