Take a trip to a tropical paradise with this humorous series! With her beloved island’s future on the line, Mayor Holly Baxter must choose between progress and the status quo, and she’ll go up against a small army of golf cart driving retirees to do it. Throw in some major family drama, long-kept secrets, and the complication of a new romance that sparks under the watchful eye of her ex, and Holly realizes that—in life, and in love— there’s always a catch! “This book is such a joy to read. It is witty, quirky and well written. I challenge you to not fall in love with this island, the inhabitants, and the visitors. Heartwarming without being sappy, this story gives a well rounded plot to keep readers of many genres satisfied. Can't wait to see what happens next!” —Amazon Review “I loved this book. I grew to love Holly Baxter and friends, and loved the vibe of Christmas Key. If there really were such a place, I'd be visiting for sure, and would probably never leave!” —Amazon Review

There’s Still Something About An Aqua Velva Man

If you shave, it’s a safe bet that you have encountered at least one of the following in the minutes after running a razor over your mug: Redness, itchiness, ingrown hairs, dryness, and irritation. Everyone’s Gone Gluten-Free, Now There’s Nothing to Eat

The pasta has suddenly turned inky in color and is chocked full of organic black beans; quinoa is ever present at my dinner table and every item in the pantry contains one or more of the following words: earthy, earthiness or earth-some.

This is what occurs when your teenage daughter goes gluten-free, joining the growing ranks of individuals who are determined to make the rest of us question our desire for a hamburger bun.

Before all you celiac sufferers make me the object of angry online diatribes, let me clarify that I’m not harping on you. Nobody should have to go through life knowing that a piece of toast can inflict painful damage on your small intestine. But every time I turn around, everyone except me seems to be eliminating gluten for reasons ranging from “I read online that I’ll think better,” to “All the other girls are doing it.”

In my daughter’s case, she’s self-conscious about her skin complexion. OK, I get it. She’s 13 and entering those boy-crazy years. Gluten might be linked to skin abnormalities, so who am I to stand in her journey toward clear, soft skin? NOTE TO BOYS: If you attempt to touch my daughter’s clear, soft skin, I will pummel you with the first item I get my hands on. Ever been hit with a frozen, gluten-free bread loaf?

I briefly considered joining her in her gluten-free ways, not for the alleged health benefits but because I am always searching for Daddy/Daughter bonding experiences that a teenager would find appealing, even if it means spending four hours in a grocery store, scanning every food label for taboo phrases like “hydrolyzed vegetable protein.” However, three simple words stopped me in my tracks:

Beer. Contains. Gluten.

So I continue putting this horrible additive into my body. Problem is, many foods I consumed daily because I thought they were healthy alternatives seem to be disappearing from our house. The low-cal pretzels that I switched to because I thought they were a sensible snack alternative to cheese balls? Gone. My morning Special K? No longer special. Those whole wheat bagels that formed the perimeter of my succulent turkey, cheese and guacamole sandwiches? Where art thou?

In their place, the grocery cart (and subsequently the pantry, refrigerator and freezer) contains Annie’s Homegrown Gluten-Free Bunny Cookies, Snikiddy Baked Fries and Ancient Grains Rice Snack Crackers made with amaranth, millet, sorghum and, naturally, quinoa.

Some gluten-free foods are also chock full of patronization, as evidenced by their titles. Want to make gluten-eating individuals feel badly? Simply stand next to them at a party as they enjoy baby quiches and pizza rolls while you loudly crinkle a bag of Way Better Multi-Grain Corn Tortilla chips. Or, as they consume Sunday pancakes, sidle up next to them and casually read the label on your new choice, Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free Pancake Mix:

“Bob’s Red Mill products labeled gluten-free are milled and blended in our dedicated gluten-free mill room, packaged in our dedicated gluten-free packaging room, and batch tested in our dedicated gluten-free quality control laboratory.”

OK, Bob, we get it. Please go back to the lab.

Finally I decided it was time to mark my turf. I led my daughter into the pantry and drew an imaginary line down the middle.

“Gluten-free on the left, non-gluten-free on the right. Same goes for the grocery cart. Deal?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, don’t forget that I live here too. And I want my favorite foods back. And I want to eat traditional stuffing this Thanksgiving. Even if it’s not physically in the bird, at least place it nearby.”

“OK, Dad, if you want to experience joint inflammation and possible neurological damage, have at it.”

Bob couldn’t have said it any better.

Parents Say There’s One Thing Worse Than Having Son Diagnosed With Terminal Cancer

After their son, Kirk II, was diagnosed with liver cancer and told he had only six months to live, Laurie and Kirk Sr. claim that the woman who previously had left their son at the altar ran — not walked — to tie the knot this time.

“I believe Star was seeing dollar signs with my dying son. She married him for his life insurance money,” claims Laurie. “Star is manipulative, and she is out for Star … Star has physically, emotionally and financially destroyed my son.”

Star admits she has cheated on Kirk twice and that she hit him once, but she vehemently denies that she’s after his money. “Kirk’s family has judged me since day one,” says Star, who says she wishes they would back off. “They make me out to be this evil person.”

Why is Kirk II eager to save his marriage? Can it even be saved? Should his parents butt out? Watch more from Friday’s episode of Dr. Phil here.

Maybe the best date isn’t a drawn-out, butter-sopped dinner by dripping candlelight. Maybe a great time together doesn’t involve some perspiring, collar-popping mosh-pit on a rooftop and a round of sour martinis. And maybe a great night doesn’t mean making an imprint on the couch and watching reruns of Friends until dawn breaks. Just maybe, for a good time you’ll only need thirty revved-up minutes of burning sting-your-eyes rubber, a quaking muffler, and sweaty palms. Two helmets. Two leather jackets. And one motorcycle.

After all, the throttle-tugging speeder is the ultimate vehicle to bypass all things normal and tedious: You can skip the subway, you can skip the traffic, and you can skip the boring “I’ll pick you up at six.” Instead, you can hear your ride approaching from a block away, get tossed a helmet, hop on the back, and you’re off to your destination within minutes. “There’s an element of trust when it comes to the motorcycle,” says Vogue.com Market Editor Chelsea Zalopany. “Even if it is the first date, and the guy, or girl, has a motorcycle, you are forced to inhale, swallow your fears, and wrap your arms around them.” It’s the oil-slicked recipe for intimacy—right from the beginning. Think: A dash of wind on your face, a fluttering heart, and a strong grip.

So what to wear? Obviously, stay protected: a thick leather jacket, closed-toe shoes (actual biker boots are preferred), and covered legs. But what if you can’t do the whole fast and furious, Hunter S. Thompson, living-on-the-edge motorcycle date? There’s a rental convertible for that. Calling shotgun in denim overalls or enjoying the wind in your hair with a chunky sweater is just as cool.

But if there’s no car? The next best thing is a bicycle. The only accessory you need? An open road. Ride on.

There’s Gotta Be a How-to Manual for This

When I was married the household duties broke down into his and hers. His included car maintenance, plumbing and putting up the firewood we use to heat our house. My duties included growing our garden, taking care of our son and the work of the home. Now that I was on my own all of it was my duty. There were, at least, three things I was pretty sure I did not know how to do.

Soon enough the challenges of plumbing and car maintenance would rear their ugly heads. I knew I had a car that could not pass Maine’s state inspection. It was an all wheel drive Subaru with a cracked head. In retrospect I can say with all surety that if I am going to have a string of car issues it will first start with the tires. A flat tire greeted me one morning as I was heading out the door. I changed the tire and put a donut on the tire. I take the tire to the tire repair guy who informs me that he would be negligent in trying to repair a bald tire. At this news I feel like cracking my head against a wall. Alas, kind tire guy replaces the tire with a used tire for a modest price. A few days later , on my way to couples counseling no less, I hear the familiar low hum of a deflating tire. The replaced tire is flat. Before my separation I understood the theory of changing tires. By the time I was in the throws of separation I understood the practice. While frustrating I also felt a small sense of accomplishment at taking care of it all. My self esteem was in need of a boost at this time after all. Two birds and and a stone…or in this case a tire. Other car challenges plagued this period of my life and I am now convinced that I would be better off with a horse. At least when a horse is ready to die you can put it out of its misery.

Mystery always surrounded the changing of the oil when my husband lived at home. It required long journeys to the parts supply store and a special oil changing uniform. A string on expletives were the only tool one needed to loosen a stubborn nut. It took all afternoon to do it. It necessitated the purchase of a six pack at the end of the day to quench the thirst of the tested mechanic. So it could not be as simple as driving to the oil change place, paying 25.00 dollars, and reading year old People Magazines for ten minutes. Could it?

Just around this time as I was indulging in one of the simple luxuries I depended on to get through the week, a hot bath. As the tub was filling up a loud monstrous hiss released itself from my hot water heater. Then there was no hot water. From the utility room where the water heater resides there was a HUGE puddle of water. Pipes I am pretty sure are not supposed to be disconnected. I made phone calls to the hardware store, calls o friends. The one phone call I wanted to avoid was the expensive call to a plumber. The calls finally gleaned a retired plumber who had the tools and knowledge I needed. And who would also teach me how to change the pressure valve on the water heater myself. I learned how to light a blow torch….oh the possibilities!

The skill I loved the most was chopping wood. All it requires is a simple elegant tool which I already possessed. The obligatory flannel shirt is donned for gleaning the spirit of the chore. Legs firmly planted on the ground, spread as though a I was a Charlie Angel in a dramatic pose, ax in hand, I raise the axe above my head; as it gives way to gravity I gather whatever strength I have in the cleaving of the log in front of me. Not only did I learn to provide the heat for my home but I am able to physically work out any frustrations I have that day by chopping wood. When the to-be chopped pile is gone there is no greater sense of accomplishment than to know that I had chopped it all. As for the other two skills…. I learned the simplest approach was usually a phone call away..along with simple monthly installments until they were paid off.

Separation and divorce teach many lesson. Some humbling like how our own dysfunction contributes to the dissolution of your union. Other more practical yet important to the healing of our self esteem. As I stood in my woodshed as measured the amount of wood chopped and stacked I felt pride and confidence that I had provided heat for my home that winter. Maybe I can’t change the oil in my car, on the other hand . I don’t have to. But the rest of this..no worries..I got this!

The LOVE in the USA romance travels from Martha’s Vineyard to Manhattan. Maggie Conroy is your average city girl. She has good girlfriends, a whole lot of education and a crappy job that comes complete with the boss from hell, aka Cruella La bitch. But Maggie’s life takes a turn for the darn near perfect when her billionaire cousin, Belmont “Jack” Lord, pulls some strings, which lands her the job of her dreams. There’s one problem. She knows her new boss, Vincent Adams, from high school. He wasn’t very nice to her back then but she’d rather take her chances with him than go back to slaving for the person who may be the worst human being on the planet. Vincent Adams didn’t expect to see Maggie Conroy ever again, although he has thought about her over the years. He’s dated some of the most beautiful women in the world and yet he still feels as if he will never be the kind of man that someone as smart, edgy and beautiful as Maggie could ever want. Kate Moss Won’t Pose Nude Anymore, But There’s Still The Internet

Models often become famous for wearing the creations of major fashion designers. But when it comes to Kate Moss, the British bombshell solidified her supermodel status by posing nude.

But it looks like the supermodel is putting her body-baring days behind her.

According to The Mirror, the 41-year-old fashion icon will no longer pose nude in order to spare her 12-year-old daughter, Lila Grace, from embarrassment.

“I don’t think my daughter wants to see me on the toilet. Lila has seen me nude,” Moss told The Mirror. “She went: ‘Yes, Mummy, there is a lot of you in those pictures.’ She saw the Playboy thing – she didn’t see the inside but she knew about the whole thing.”

Moss has flaunted her flesh for countless publications and fashion campaigns. Her Calvin Klein “Obsession” ad is legendary. Her St. Tropez campaign is stunning. Her March 2014 feature for Lui was shocking. And the list goes on and on.

And while it’s noble of her to think about shielding her tween daughter from her exhibitionist ways, there’s one problem: the Internet.

That’s right, thanks to modern technology Moss’ daughter will only be a few key strokes away from seeing her mother in the buff. But again, we appalaud her efforts.

There’s A Sign Women Are Ovulating, But Men Can’t Detect It

By Cari Nierenberg, Contributing LiveScience Writer
Published on 07/01/2015 11:38 AM EDT on LiveScience

Women’s cheeks get redder when they are the most fertile, but this color change is so subtle that it is undetectable by the human eye, a new study finds.

In the study, researchers in the United Kingdom took photographs of 22 women every weekday over the course of one month. After analyzing the photos, the researchers concluded that the women’s faces got redder around the time they ovulated.

“This is the first study to conclusively show that women’s faces do change in redness over the course of the menstrual cycle,” said Robert Burriss, a co-author of the study and a research fellow in psychology at Northumbria University in England.

But the researchers had expected to find a change in skin redness that was detectable to the human eye, because this might explain why previous studies had suggested that men perceive women’s faces as more attractive when the women are ovulating, Burriss told Live Science. Surprisingly, however, the study found that the changes in redness are too small for people to perceive, he said.

Past research had shown that men find women more attractive when the women are ovulating, and that men rate changes in women’s voices and body odor during ovulation as more attractive. This new study investigated whether changes in women’s facial coloring during their menstrual cycle might also explain how attractive they appear to men during ovulation.

The researchers used a specialized camera to take the photographs, and analyzed changes in the women’s skin color and skin luminance, which is a measure of its lightness or darkness, at two locations on the women’s cheeks. [5 Myths About Women’s Bodies]

The study found no change in the women’s skin luminance, but there were variations in facial color, according to the findings published today (June 30) in the journal PLOS ONE. The redness in a woman’s cheeks increased in the days before she ovulated and remained high until she began her next period, and then decreased rapidly after she started her period.

Attractiveness and fertility

Research has shown that men consider red facial skin more attractive, and researchers think the reason for this may be that the color suggests good health and youthfulness, Burriss said. The color of skin on other primate species changes in a similar way when they are the most fertile, he noted.

For example, female chimpanzees have swollen red bottoms at peak fertility as a clue to attract male chimps looking to mate.

But humans might not “advertise their fertility” the way that chimps and other species do, Burriss said. The benefit of concealing ovulation in women might be that it promotes relationship commitment, he noted.

“If men don’t know when women are fertile, they stay interested in the relationship,” Burriss said. In species where the timing of ovulation is obvious, such as chimps, males often ignore nonfertile females, he noted.

Some studies have suggested that women may advertise their fertility by becoming more flirtatious, but they do so only with men they find attractive. Other research has shown that women may make more attempts to enhance their appeal near the time of ovulation by wearing more revealing, stylish or red clothing.

A next step in this current research may be to determine whether skin-color changes are more pronounced in some parts of the face than in others during ovulation. For instance, future studies could look at whether the lips have more dramatic color changes than the cheeks do, Burriss said.

One weakness of the study is that it included mostly Caucasian women, so it’s unclear whether similar patterns of skin variation during the menstrual cycle would be observed in women of different skin colors.

Kerry Washington: ‘There’s No Excuse’ To Skip Wearing Sunscreen

“Black people don’t get get sunburned.”
“Dark skin is a natural SPF.”
“Sunscreen is just for the beach.”

These are just a few of the myths that lead people to make bad decisions that place them at a much higher risk for developing skin cancer. Those myths have been debunked, but that’s not stopping Kerry Washington from going one step further to help inform people about protecting their skin.

“There have been a lot of misconceptions, particularly in communities of color, that because you have melanin in your skin, you don’t need to protect it,” the “Scandal” actress told The Huffington Post Monday.

Washington has teamed up with Neutrogena for the brand’s skin cancer prevention campaign, Choose Skin Health, which will donate a product with SPF to a family in need every time a customer purchases a Neutrogena product that contains SPF during the months of May, June and July.

While skin cancer comprises only one to two percent of all cancers among African-Americans, recent findings by the Skin Cancer Foundation conclude that the overall average five-year melanoma survival rate for black peoples is only 75 percent, compared to 93 percent for white people.

“The statistic that is most alarming to me is that there are more new cases of skin cancer every year than breast, prostate, lung and colon combined,” said Washington. “The fact that skin cancer is preventable, that there are things that we can do and that is still the case, really just speaks to the lack of information.”

That’s why Washington advocates for getting regular skin screenings and applying sunscreen on a daily basis. “In my house, we all wear sunscreen … I feel like the technology is such that there’s no excuse, whether you’re looking for something that can go under your foundation or you’re looking for something to put on your kids because they’re running around the pool,” she said. “You know whatever your needs are, there is a product that can meet that need.”

The 38-year-old said she prefers dry touch sunscreen lotions like the stick version of Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer. “It doesn’t spill. It’s such an easy product,” she added. For her daughter, Isabelle, Washington opts for Pure & Free sunscreen.

Head over to Neutrogena.com to learn about the company’s buy one, donate one program.

11 Reasons There’s No Such Thing As A ‘Failed Marriage’

no such thing

There’s a quote from novelist Victoria Holt that’s particularly well-suited to describe the divorce experience. “Never regret,” she wrote. “If it’s good, it’s wonderful. If it’s bad, it’s experience.”

Regardless of how you feel about your former marriage, it undoubtedly taught you something about life and who you are as a person. Below, HuffPost Divorce bloggers and readers share the reasons they have no regrets about saying “I do,” even if they eventually divorced.

1. You may have great kids to show for it.
“I have never, not once looked back and felt any regret in marrying my ex. Because of that marriage, three beautiful lives were born. I love my three daughters, not just because they are my children, but because of who they are as individuals: The beautiful tall quiet introvert, the freak-flag flying feminist, and my little cheerleader who aspires to be Kim Kardashian. They are only half mine, the other half is him -– and I would not want to change a single thing about them.” –Jennifer Gardella

2. Looking back, the relationship may have been what you needed, when you needed it.
carol
“When I married my first husband I was grieving the loss of my father a year prior. I was in a very sad and unhappy place. Looking back now, I know that I was looking to recreate my sense of family. Sure, it’s not the best reason to get married, but in that moment in time, the family I created with my ex-husband essentially sheltered me while I developed the strength to thrive as an adult.” Carol Schaffer

3. You may no longer be spouses, but nothing can break the bond you share as parents.
“When we got married it was with the idea of having a big family. Having four children under three in less than three years (we had twins!) was simultaneously wonderful and terribly difficult. I worked days and my ex-husband worked nights. We operated in a haze, neither of us getting anywhere near enough sleep. Those years taught us the value of teamwork. Our kids are now all in elementary school and luckily that teamwork we learned in our kids’ early years has transferred into a great co-parenting relationship. No one in the world gets how wonderful and terribly difficult it was and still is to have these four kiddos but the two of us. I’m thankful we learned how to put ourselves aside and work together effectively for our kids.” –Kasey Ferris

4. When things were good, they were really good.
“My ex and I traveled the world, lived in some incredibly exotic places and raised two wonderful children at the same time. How could I regret anything? I guess the only thing I regret is how it ended.” –Caroline Sarah Keller

5. More likely than not, marriage is an essential part of your life story.
beth cone kramer
“I don’t regret marrying my ex-husband because no matter how a relationship plays out, the experience is part of the montage of your life, especially when you have kids. As two people who traversed the landscape of dating, engagement, wedding, pregnancy, childbirth, and the challenges of raising toddlers, we’ll forever be linked. I have never considered my marriage to be a failure, despite ending in divorce. I will always see my marriage to my ex-husband as a connection that brought two inspiring, wonderful young women into the world and for that, I have absolutely no regrets.” –Beth Cone Kramer

6. Your kids wouldn’t be who they are if not for your ex.
“I always say I could have had these three kids with anyone, since they look so much like my side of the family, but that’s not true. My family has always been talented –- music, painting, writing –- and although I have some of those talents, I was never driven to succeed with any of them. My children have those talents in abundance, plus something I never had: ambition. They got that entirely from their mother. She is tenacious as a pit bull and usually gets whatever it is she goes after. (I pity the poor customer rep on the phone that doesn’t have the right answer for her!) She earned both a bachelor and master’s degree while working full-time.” –Al Deluise

7. You may have gained some awesome in-laws.
“If I hadn’t married, I would have never had began a friendship with my dear, wonderful sister-in-law. Her brother and I might have gotten a divorce, but my friendship with her has never changed.” –Rochelle Winston Davies

8. Marriage — and divorce — teach lessons in forgiveness.
“At the time, I married a man who I loved unconditionally — I thought of him as my one true love. The marriage didn’t end well but I persevered and I learned how to forgive when something seems unforgivable. I wouldn’t be the person I am today had I not experienced marriage and divorce.” –Stephanie Cobb Gilmore

9. The marriage may have ended, but your friendship with your ex can absolutely live on.
gregory chambers
“I have no regrets because even through we separated, my ex Malissa is still my best friend. We can laugh and enjoy each other’s company. I feel fortunate that we’ve maintained a mutual respect for each other and what we shared. When I think of my marriage, I think of the growth that I have attained through my union with Malissa. I have learned that love cannot be cavalier; you have to put constant effort into courtship and appreciation. To be frank about it, my marriage may not have had the plot line that most people hope for, but I believe it turned out the way that it was supposed to in the end.” –Gregory Chambers

10. You aren’t afraid to live life to the fullest.
“I used to regret a lot about my marriage but I am learning to move beyond those things. I have no regrets about having kids and jumping feet first and uninhibited into life as a couple with another person; moving to new places, buying homes; trying new jobs; quitting jobs, having parties with friends, doing yard work. The list goes on and on. The more philosophical answer is that I don’t regret my marriage because I was living my life.” –Chris Burcher

There’s A ‘Seinfeld’ College Course About Psychological Disorders

Want to binge-watch “Seinfeld” and get a medical degree while you’re at it? No problem.

It’s nothing new that hit TV shows have become the basis for college courses, with everything from “Game of Thrones” to “Breaking Bad” classes. But now, thanks to Dr. Anthony Tobia, an associate psychology professor at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, students are watching “Seinfeld” for homework. The cleverly titled class, “Psy-feld,” allows third and fourth-year medical students in the hospital’s psychiatric rotation to discuss the psychopathology of the episodes and characters. Tobia has even created a massive database of all 180 episodes with teaching points for each.

“You have a very diverse group of personality traits that are maladaptive on the individual level,” Tobia told NJ.com. “When you get these friends together the dynamic is such that it literally creates a plot: Jerry’s obsessive compulsive traits combined with Kramer’s schizoid traits, with Elaine’s inability to forge meaningful relationships and with George being egocentric.”

Tobia is clearly in tune with how younger generations absorb and learn from pop culture today. He has another class where students watch the Coen brothers’ 1996 film “Fargo” and live-tweet the characters’ potential disorders.

The methods seem to be working. One student told NJ.com that watching the TV show is providing more relatable examples than a textbook would. Now we just wonder if the surgery students will be invited to discuss “The Junior Mint.”

There's Already A Petition For A Full-Length Version Of Bey & Jay's 'Run'

One day after its release, there is a petition to create a full-length film from Beyonce and Jay Z’s “Run” trailer.

Surely you’ve seen this video, for which The First Couple of Hip-Hop stood atop the highest peak of their Hollywood home, and blew into a conch shell, beckoning all celebrities in the surrounding area to appear for cameos. (We’re guessing.) That clarion call turned up the likes of Don Cheadle, Rashida Jones and Sean Penn (etc., etc.) to shoot each other and partake in Nicolas Winding Refn-esque strip club scenes. Yet, at the end of the trailer Bey and Jay were quite clear: “Run” is “coming never.” Not soon. Not in March of 2015. NEVER.

Nonetheless, there are still some folks trying to get more “Run,” rallying for a feature-length film with a petition (that was created on Change.org, because that is the only real, actionable thing on the Internet besides tweeting hash tags).

run

“After the release of Beyoncé and JAY Z’s ‘Run’ trailer,” the petition reads, “millions of fans across the world became devestated [sic] after seeing ‘coming never’ at the end of the exciting and action packed ‘Run’ trailer.”

Anyway, as of publish, 750 fans have already signed the petition, so, if you were also “devestated” or maybe just want to see Bey and Jay running around with a bunch of celebs, you can also sign it. They only need 99,250 more signatures.
