Mahershala Ali Stars In 3rd Season Trailer For HBO’s ‘True Detective’

mahershala ali true detective third season HBO

Source: HBO / screen cap

After a critically-acclaimed first season and second season that drew mixed reviews, HBO’s crime anthology series True Detective is set to make a return for a third go round. In the starring role, Mahershala Ali brings a steely coolness to the role of an Arkansas police detective troubled by a case.

Ali plays Wayne Hays, featuring the character at various intervals to illustrate that the investigation takes the course of decades and consumes him to the point of obsession.

“Before you ever knew me, I wasn’t scared much. That wasn’t a fear for me. Things I’ve seen, things I know, wouldn’t do anything but cause harm. My whole brain’s a bunch of missing pieces,” Ali says in a voiceover as Hays.

This season of the series looks to be as gripping as Ali goes from sure-footed to frazzled over the course of the quick trailer which, depending on limited visual information, appears to involve missing children and Hays’ hunt for answers.

Starring with Ali in the third season of True Detective are Mamie Gummer, Stephen Dorff and Carmen Ejogo. Daniel Sackheim is the director and series creator and executive producer Nic Pizzolatto will make his debut in the director’s chair as well.

True Detective will come to HBO in January 2019.

Penny has a specific fantasy for a surprise abduction scenario. She gets snatched away from her job at the local drive-through by five hicks in a beat-up trailer asking for directions. According to her horny fantasy request, they take her to the middle of nowhere and the games begin: She is tied on a leash and pulled behind a moving car, running in the sweltering heat. In true keeping with the special fantasy she requested the guys drag her to a deserted shack where she is further fondled and defiled. Her abductors came prepared with all sorts of BDSM toys to poke and prod poor Penny with – but mostly they just greedily fuck her little body with huge hard filthy cocks. They stuff all three of her holes, fuck her ass with a stick, fist her and laugh as they stuff two cocks into her pussy. After what seems like forever the guys finally cum in her face and leave. However they decided to come back for seconds and change their minds about where they want to deposit their nasty loads. Check out what goes on in the world of this slut’s dirty mind.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, is a film that grabs life by the ball. Peter LaFleur (Vince Vaughn), is a charismatic underachiever and proprietor of a rundown gym called Average Joe’s. The facility’s clientele of decidedly less-than-average Joes is made up of a self-styled pirate, a scrawny nerd (Justin Long) who dreams of impressing an unattainable cheerleader, an obsessive aficionado of obscure sports, a dim-witted young man, and a cocky know-it-all who, of course, really knows nothing. Peter’s humble gym catches the eye of White Goodman (Ben Stiller), the power-mullet-sporting, Fu-Manchu-d, egomaniacal owner of Globo Gym, a gleaming monolith of fitness. White intends to take over Average Joe’s, and Peter’s non-existent bookkeeping is making it all too easy for him. A foreclosing bank has stationed attorney Kate Veatch (Christine Taylor) inside Average Joe’s to finalize Globo’s takeover of the gym. Peter’s boyish charm wins her over and Kate joins his team of social rejects to beat the odds.

7 Things I Learned on My Journey to True Love

2015-08-19-1439995202-2034426-IMG_7933.jpegAs you may have heard, I met the love of my life through The Huffington Post. Who knew a mouthy manifesto I wrote after a bad post-divorce date would lead me to my very own Magic Mike, a man who makes me giggle like a school girl on HuffPost Live?

Honestly, being struck by lightening and resuscitated by Channing Tatum himself would have seemed more in the realm of possibility.

You see, I have had a black cloud stalking me for decades. At 42, I have done it all… dating (high school, college, adult… oh my!), flings, short-and long-term relationships, tripping down the aisle. Nursing a shattered heart, I convinced myself that I gave birth to the man who would piece me back together. I flirted. I dated. I dreamed. But I didn’t think my soulmate was in the forecast.

Here’s seven things I learned on my terrifyingly dark, unpaved third world country type of road to happiness (chock full of I-need-a-barf-bag-to-deal-with-twists-and-turns moments).

1. It happens when you least expect it. It’s so annoying but it’s so true. If you told me my dream guy would read my post, which was basically designed to rip men a collective new a$ $ , and relate to my rant enough to craft a thoughtful response, I would have laughed. Hell, I would have scoffed. Cackled, maybe. But that’s exactly what happened.

2. Be fierce. Repeatedly striking out in love is a gift. When you f*ck up, you lose your fear of failure. Empowered by my perfectly imperfect track record, I was unabashedly myself when I met Mike. I didn’t sacrifice one ounce of who I am and he adores me anyway.

3. Be open (just not in a prostitute kind of way). Date against type, my friends. I am infatuated with a man I would have discounted under traditional dating circumstances. I am a serial plant killer and he is a gardner extraordinaire. Come football season, we will be screaming for different teams in our living room. We will definitely vote for sparring politicians. But, wow, the synergy, the sparks, the soulful love we have is undeniable.

4. Kiss frogs. Come on now, don’t be shy. Every single frog — even the wart covered ones who get off hearing themselves ribbit — are a value add. They teach you about yourself if you listen. They bring you closer to your proverbial prince.

5. It’s cosmic. Finding true love is a spiritual awakening. It’s intuitive. You just know. When you cross paths with your soulmate, love blooms faster than a celebrity dons extensions after a bad haircut. It’s involuntary.

A soul connection differs from a honeymoon phase type of giddiness. The person is a natural extension of you, without warning, without effort, without compromise. The attraction is wild. When you hold hands, there’s an electric current, there’s a perfect fit. The amount of time you’ve been together doesn’t matter; the time you spent apart does.

6. Haters exist. Some people despise happy endings. They don’t believe in fairytales. Others are jealous. I have a friend who has been dismissive about my relationship since the beginning. Readers have left dozens of negative comments. I knew the first time I spoke to Mike that he was like no other. He understood me without explanation. Trust your gut, the telltale signs, the palpable energy. Haters be damned.

7. Live in hope. I have paid my misery dues for a lifetime. I buried my beautiful mom and filed for divorce months later. I have been lied to, spit on, let down. I have felt excruciating pain. I have been emotionally abandoned. I have lost. I ended relationships that weren’t right even though I knew I would be criticized for my choices. Despite everything, I always basked in the rays of hope. I believed in brighter tomorrows. And, finally, my day has come.

On Being True to Ourselves: Lessons From My Daughter

My amazing, incredible and world traveling daughter finally came home last week after a month in Amsterdam. She called her time in the CISV village “the most amazing experience of my life.” She arrived exhausted, animated and changed. She talked non-stop, except to sleep, about the amazing friends, adventures and life lessons she’d had. Despite my being the adult, she is my hero. Her thirst for learning, her openness, her kind and gentle nature, her willingness to be vulnerable — all a gift. Her response to the opportunity to meet kids from all over the world and live together in a community of their own for a month was so enthusiastic, it was contagious. I was envious of her journey.

In the yearbook she returned with, so many of her friends, leaders and staff commented about her comfort in her own skin, her big ideas, her open mind and giant heart. Reading those notes was so emotional for me. I was so proud and also in such awe. I take very little credit for the person she is, which is very much her own doing. I know we are pretty good parents and get close to 50 percent of it right, close to 50 percent of the time. But she, she is all her own.

I was reminded however, that it was the same spirit in me that forced me to see how much of myself I had lost in my marriage. How squelched we can become when trying to please someone else’s ideal of how we “should be.” I was reminded that I had no one to blame for that but me. In any relationship there is give and take. There is compromise. All of that is necessary and good, but when we compromise ourselves, our very core and our very being, that is when it is no longer healthy. THAT is when we have to pay attention to the inner voice that looks in the mirror and barely recognizes our reflection.

Marriage, like any relationship, is hard. Being true to ourselves is even harder. My daughter is my hero because even as she enters the cruel world of tweendom, she stays the course. I’m smart enough to know this might not always be the case. Middle School and High School are other-worldly planets where the rules seem to change daily. Puberty and hormones often take over and cut down self-confidence and ability to be ones true self. Acceptance often rules over self-worth. I remember. I recall exactly when I went from believing (at 10) I owned the world to realizing (at 13) it owned me. I also know that I will fight damn hard to help her stay true to her amazing spirit. I know that I will prioritize that over grades, clothes, looks and even friends. All the while, thanking her for motivating me and inspiring me to remember my own.

The True Cost of Fast Fashion: Continuing the Conversation

2015-08-13-1439478624-7610627-true_cost_movie.jpg.662x0_q70_cropscale.jpg

“People aren’t going to care until it hurts them personally.”

That was the last comment in the closing discussion of The True Cost movie screening I co-hosted in Boston this summer.

The documentary has been sweeping film festivals and fashion media across the world with a no-holds-bar narrative of fashion’s effect on people and planet.

As I sat in the audience that night, surrounded by 100+ students, designers, entrepreneurs, mechanical engineers and concerned consumers, I could see and hear the emotions around me.

There’s something about watching a female garment worker being beaten with a club on the streets of Phnom Penh that can really grip you.

As strong as the emotions were, though, some of the most insightful comments in the post-discussion focused on how we will respond now that we’ve seen the footage and the movie is no longer playing in front of our eyes.

“We’re so detached,” one audience member said. “It’s just so hard to care about people on the other side of the world who you don’t know. Especially when there are so many other problems in the world.”

This sentiment resonates with many consumers: When there is so much to fight for in this world, how do you choose your battles?

When you’re the mom in Missouri with four mouths to feed and the cheapest store is a Wal-Mart, how do you say ‘no’ to the five dollar t-shirts that your kids will grow out of in a few months?

When you’re the university student drowning in debt, how do you make ethical fashion a part of your lifestyle?

In an ideal world, the industry execs profiting off of cheap labor would choose to change things on their own. Then consumers wouldn’t have to make a choice — it would either be ethically-made or not made at all.

But that’s not the reality we live in. The reality is that the fashion industry is a 3 trillion dollar a year business and only two percent of apparel companies source from suppliers that pay their workers a fair and living wage.

2015-08-13-1439478115-2356459-thetruecostliviafirthstillvogue128may15pr_b.jpg

The reality is that industry giants can claim negligence because they don’t technically “own” their factories and thus don’t have to take responsibility for fair compensation.

The reality is that until consumers start making demands and asking for change, the fashion industry has no reason to clean up its act.

We’ve heard all of this before. It’s a classic chicken and the egg. A vicious cycle of rock bottom prices and consumer expectation that it should be this way. We expect the five dollar t-shirt — I’d even go so far to say, we feel entitled to it.

And that’s where the root of the problem lies. On the surface, the issues are obvious to us: pay the workers a better wage, change the supply chain, improve working conditions.

“…But I still want clothing to be cheap.”

We deflect the responsibility with the same negligence that fast fashion shareholders deflect it.

There’s nothing I can do as one person. The problem is too great to solve. The issues are too complicated. There is someone more qualified to tackle this. There are only so many hours in a day…

Why should the medical student in Boston care about the garment worker in Bangladesh?

Maybe the answer lies in actually remembering, as True Cost director Andrew Morgan says, that there are people behind the clothes we wear.

Maybe if we saw that with a different stroke of luck in the gene pool, it could be us in front of that sewing machine — we wouldn’t be so apathetic.

I don’t have the answer. Or a solution. The best I can do is lead by example and encourage others to do the same.

The best you can do is to start asking questions, educating yourself, sparking non-judgmental conversations with your friends while doing whatever you can to shine light on yet another fundamental flaw in our society —

That when it comes to the bottom line, the underdog never wins.

If you haven’t seen The True Cost documentary yet it’s streaming on Netflix for free right now.

The Story Behind True Detective’s Cover of ‘The Rose’

Given True Detective’s penchant for teasing out legendary tales, it’s fitting that a king (or, rather, the shadow of one) hovers over the second season’s third episode. It opens with what appears to be an Elvis impersonator (played by Jake La Botz) decked out in a shimmering powder-blue suit. He’s on his knees, pomaded hair slicked back, hamming it up onstage at Ray Velcoro’s local dive bar, not by lip-synching an Elvis tune but “The Rose,” a Conway Twitty cover first made famous by Bette Midler.

‘True Detective’: Fatal(?) Gunshots and More Reveals From Episode 2

The actual case of Caspere’s death, and the competing interests working on it, come more to light, giving it some forward momentum that the premiere lacked.

Hollywood Reporter

Everything Is Papier-Mâché On ‘True Detective’ Episode 2

The season premiere of “True Detective” proved divisive last week, but entertainment editors Erin Whitney and Matthew Jacobs are sticking to their promise to discuss the show every Sunday. This week’s episode dove slightly deeper into the mystery of Ben Caspare’s death. The city manager’s grizzly autopsy report prompted Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ani (Rachel McAdams) to question whether a penchant for prostitutes led to his demise. Meanwhile, we got an unsettling look at Paul’s (Taylor Kitsch) family life, more of the series’ noirish driving scenes, Frank (Vince Vaughn) worrying about his riches and a cliffhanger that could (rightfully) take the show in a whole other direction. Let’s discuss.

Spoiler alert for “True Detective” Season 2, Episode 2, “Night Finds You.”

Matthew Jacobs: Hi, Erin! We were pretty cruel toward last week’s premiere, and the comments on our review seem to indicate a good number of people agreed with us. Then again, we were graced with a slew of ad hominem attacks on Twitter and via email, so clearly some of you took the episode as seriously as it took itself. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll be able to please the latter crop, so prep your aggression now, gracious readers.

I will say that Episode 2 was marginally better than the first. But hold on while I nod off as Frank moans about his self-made wealth (“Everything is papier-mâché” is an actual line uttered — twice) and while Ray, Ani and Paul exchange vacant side glares as they examine Ben Caspere’s body. On the other side lies the season’s first intriguing scene: Paul’s mother stroking his back and using what I assume is some sort of creepy euphemism when she tells him twice that he can have his “old room” if he spends the night. What is happening there? Give me more of that — it actually feels like there is a character with layers on the screen and not hollow bodies who shepherd the vague plot from one phase to the next.

taylor kitsch

Erin Whitney: Before I jump into this and thus throw myself into the gladiator pit against “True Detective” defenders, let me at least say that I’m not simply comparing this week’s new episode to Season 1. I will reference the initial season, though, because it’s difficult not to mourn something great in the midst of watching the melodramatic scenes from this week’s episode.

That opening sequence where Frank recalls his childhood with his drunk father is painful to watch, but in the wrong way. What should play as a poignant emotional moment is instead drenched in cheap desperation. Way longer than necessary, the scene feels like it’s ripped straight out of an actor’s guidebook to auditioning: the hardened criminal shows his vulnerability by recounting memories of his abusive daddy locking him in the basement. Pizzolatto has somehow lost all sense of subtlety in his writing to the point that I can’t help but wonder if he’s playing a joke on us.

Jump ahead to the car scenes between Ray and Ani and the group meeting between all three detectives. Each of these plays like a parody of Season 1 and, in general, much of quality television. Their conversations seem superfluous, or at least insignificant to the plot at hand. They don’t reveal any distinct or deeper qualities about the characters. Part of me thinks Pizzolatto has completely flipped his writing style to subvert our expectations of what TV should be, which is what Matt Johnston claimed in his Business Insider review. Even so, that’s not remotely engaging or serving any storytelling or symbolic purpose (at least not yet). I pray my mind will be changed by the end of the season — I desperately want to be in awe of this show. But so far, I’m simply not convinced.

Matt: I can’t say I buy that there is that much self-awareness at play, but I’ve seen others make arguments about its meta relationship to prestige programming, too. The show doesn’t seem to realize what it’s lacking, which is a sense of identity within the world it depicts. Every location featured is a grubby, nondescript part of this fictional LA-adjacent town, and without color from local denizens drifting through the background, it is rendered culture-less. That’s why I griped about the freeway shots last week — they reflect the web of plots the show has weaved, but do little to immerse us in what makes this town tick and why Caspere’s disappearance is worth eight talky hours of television. The same goes for the car scenes, where Ray and Ani carry on meaningless conversations that don’t unearth much about their worldviews or the communities they defend. And that green screen? HBO, please tell me the screeners you provided to press still needed color-correction work, because damn. If we thought the aerial shots do nothing for the season’s world-building, just look at the streets these characters drive down.

I thought the scene with Paul’s mother accomplished what most of the others did not in hinting at a mysterious backstory that we actually want to take the time to understand. I criticized his suicidal bender last week, but could Paul actually be the season’s best character? Not that he has much competition: I still don’t understand much about Ani and it seems like the show thinks we know more about Frank than we actually do, while Ray is so on the nose that I understand far too much about him. But wait! Maybe he’s dead? Those final few moments were pretty gripping, and it could point to interesting things to come. But I find it hard to believe he’s actually a goner.

vince vaughn colin farrell

Erin: I enjoyed the scene between Paul and his mother as well and finally began to feel a sense of discomfort, which is something this season has lacked so far. But I also really loved the final scene with Ray in Caspere’s secret home. The animal masks and vintage radio amped up the (possible) presence of the occult, and things were just starting to get interesting. Like you said, I can’t imagine the season killing off its lead character just yet. Still, it feels a bit cheap to tease audiences with such a big cliffhanger so early on.

The lack of identity you mention is my main criticism of the first two episodes overall. This season has no sense of place, which is surprising for a plot so grounded in a distinct locale. The corruption and grimy immorality of last season hung over every episode, reminding viewers of the horrors of world Rust and Marty were immersed in. It’s fine that Season 2 isn’t trying to recreate that feeling, but it makes the atmosphere that much less intriguing. Why care about a kidnapped official from a city no one cares for in the first place? Even after two episodes, I still don’t feel like we’ve witnessed enough of the idiosyncrasies of the fictional Vinci — I’m longing to see more of it, but the low-quality crushing car scenes and brief shots of factories do little to characterize it. Whatever happens moving forward, I hope that final scene pays off in a major way.

Matt: It gave me the sense that Ray knew more than the audience did. There was a certain comfort on his face as he lurked through Caspere’s home, implying his power-abusing corruption might extend to the expired city manager. That would give his need to retain custody over his possibly illegitimate son — the part of his life that he sees as a saving grace — a sense of purpose that stretches beyond clichéd daddy issues. Conversely, maybe he’s working to crush Frank’s entire operation after spending so much time indebted to him. That’s a script-flipping I’d sign on for. Either would ground the mystery by contouring the good-or-evil debate the show hasn’t convinced us to invest in regarding these characters. Maybe this is Season 2’s turning point. Here’s to hoping for a more immersive discussion next week.

Erin: The possibility of Ray withholding information and/or conning Frank all along is the most exciting theory yet, and one that could quickly turn me into a fan of this season. I’ve wondered whether scrutinizing this show episode by episode may hurt our perception of it. Last season I fell so deeply down the rabbit hole of uncovering the Yellow King’s identity that I nearly lost sight of the overall story at hand. While I’m still skeptical, I am going to try to pull back a bit and let the next few episodes wash over me, and hopefully they will surprise us both.

‘True Detective’ Season 2 Premiere Falls As Flat As A Circle

After more than a year of casting rumors, memes and hashtag wish lists and confusion over the plot, “True Detective” Season 2 finally premiered on Sunday night. The first episode of the new season, which is completely separate from Season 1, introduced audiences to a new round of characters, a fictional city and an entirely new mystery. Each week, The Huffington Post Entertainment editors Matthew Jacobs and Erin Whitney will gab about their thoughts on the season. First up, a bit of a bummer with Sunday’s premiere:

Spoiler alert for “True Detective” Season 2, Episode 1, “The Western Book of the Dead.”

Erin Whitney: So, Matt, after all the hype building up to “True Detective” Season 2 — and there was a lot of it — the first episode has arrived and we can finally start to discuss it. I will say, I was doubtful about the casting at first, primarily with Vince Vaughn in a darker role, but the first trailer sold me. Dark, brooding, moody — everything I loved about Season 1, and was excited to find in Season 2. But alas, after watching Sunday’s premiere, I’m sad to say I was incredibly underwhelmed, not to mention pretty confused. It was one thing to simply feel underread, but enjoyably mystified by Rust Cohle’s existential musings last year, but I had little idea what was going on during this season’s premiere. Even after rewinding a few scenes to try and figure out who’s who and what’s what, frankly, I didn’t feel much incentive to care. What was your reaction?

true detective colin farrell

Matthew Jacobs: Oh, how I long to disagree with you. The only thing I knew before watching “True Detective” last year was that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were at the center. When I finished the first episode, I was stunned. I wanted more, and I wanted it right then and there. I loved it so much that I was very forgiving of the contentious finale. I was expecting at least a tinge of that in Season 2. But if I weren’t paid to write about pop culture, I would have little impetus to keep watching. The episode felt cobbled together from Season 1 tropes — how many sweeping overhead shots of a California freeway can a person stand? — with characters who talked like Shakespearean outtakes but offered little in the way of intriguing plot. A brooding Colin Farrell beating up the parent of a child who bullied his son? Snooze. Taylor Kitsch on some sort of windblown suicide bender? No thanks. It seems like the absence of Cary Fukunaga, who directed every episode last year, may be more detrimental than I’d anticipated.

Erin: You hit all of the points perfectly. I’m still mourning Fukunaga’s departure, and not just his style as a director specifically, but the harmony of his eye with Nic Pizzolatto’s writing. Together, those two created a dark and eerie atmosphere that hooked me in regardless of the central mystery. With this first episode, it feels like director Justin Lin is struggling to capture the depths of the script and the inhumanity of the California crime world the season seeks to explore. Instead we’re left with repetitive, stylized overhead shots that make me as sleepy and bored as I’d feel in the passenger seat on the 405 freeway.

And, of course, I realize we’re both finding disappointment through comparison to Season 1, which in itself is a bit unfair. But even distancing this season from Pizzolatto’s previous achievement, I at least expected to meet characters that defied the general stereotypes of the distraught, rage-fueled alcoholic cop. Farrell’s Ray Velcoro seems to be a tragically misunderstood father until he proves he’s actually an awful one with a drinking problem. Kitsch’s Paul Woodrugh rides his motorcycle as some sort of anger-management therapy. Rachel McAdams’ Ani Bezzerides seems pretty cold and pissed off. I love that each of these characters are lost souls struggling to find purpose, but it’s difficult to actually feel anything while watching them. They felt less palpable and dimensional than Rust’s Lone Star can cutouts from last year. But this is just the first episode, so there’s still hope.

true detective vince vaughn

Matt: There is hope, but my biggest gripe is how unfocused and overcrowded the opener felt. You and I don’t mind spending time in gloomy, grisly worlds — we both love “The Leftovers,” after all — but if I were to judge Season 2 based on the premiere, it doesn’t seem like the show has much of a hook. It’s self-serious in all sorts of uninteresting ways. “City manager disappears right before a major transportation deal” isn’t an alluring logline, but at least give us characters with identities instead of flat descriptors like “angry cop” and “destructive loner.” As of now, it feels like the logline is more like “Watch while tough folks with ambiguously bad pasts and rough family situations wallow about.” And that final shot, where the central quartet comes together for the first time? That should have marked a bold culmination, or something remotely resembling a cliffhanger, and instead the camera panning across their faces felt like a parody.

Erin: I couldn’t have put it better myself. That final panning shot of all three characters meeting was in the initial trailer HBO released and was one of the things that got me excited for the season. Unlikely detectives uniting to solve a disturbing crime by pulling from the dark remnants of their past is exactly what Pizzolatto was all about. Yet, like I wrote above, none of the characters so far feel a fraction as original as Rust Cohle or Marty Hart. And when they finally met in Sunday’s episode, you could almost feel their own lack of enthusiasm for what’s to come.

Overall, the writing, the direction and even the slow-brewing plot, so far, feel unfinished and just as lost as Ray, Ani and Paul each appear to be. While watching the premiere, I couldn’t help but think Pizzolatto was rushed into piecing together this season, and with the intention of distancing it as far as possible from Season 1. While I appreciate the anthology aspect of this series and that Season 2 is embracing a whole new story, it’s still missing the awe-inspiring confidence of its predecessor. We were all wowed by Rust and Marty’s story because it was so richly embedded in literature, philosophy and the psychology behind the season’s crimes, and it felt certain of it’s direction from the start. Now, though, these three lost detectives, and the truth behind the dead city manager, fall as flat as Rust’s metaphorical circle.

Matt: And yet, I’ll cut the show some slack because, after all, it is only the first episode. I haven’t watched the other two episodes that HBO provided to press because last year’s red herring-laden season felt better suited for weekly marination. Clearing the bar set by an Emmy-winning mega-hit is tough, but here’s hoping the next installment is focused and provides a more lucid window into the macabre Los Angeles area the show is attempting to depict. It’s obvious from the incessant aerial shots that the whole “the city is a character” mantra applies, but without the otherworldliness — and specificity — of the Louisiana bayous, that come across as vacant. Paint a better picture of why the location matters, and convince us to care for the suicidal (Kitsch), irascible (Farrell), weary (McAdams) characters at the center, and we’ll be in business. If not, the new season’s consciousness will be a tragic misstep in the “True Detective” evolution.

Kidnapped for Jesus: A True Story

The ages of 12-15 are pretty horrible years. You’re hitting puberty, probably have braces, shitty hair and skin, horrible clothes, and hate everything in the world. I am no exception to the above. I think I have three pictures that are solid documentary evidence that I did, in fact, exist.

When I was 14, I thought I was the toughest bitch around. I shaved the back of my head, wore flannel shirts, baggy pants, and a choker (it was the ’90s; don’t judge me). One day, I was sneakily smoking a cigarette out my bedroom window, when my mother called me downstairs. She wanted to take me clothes shopping! This was relatively unheard of because it was well past back to school shopping, not Christmas or my birthday. Cautiously, I agreed to go. Into the car we go, just me and mom. We lived pretty close to the mall, so I didn’t understand why she was getting on the highway. As we drove, I realized that she wasn’t taking the exit to the mall. Panic struck. “Where are you taking me?” Nothing. No answer, just driving. Now I’m losing my mind; I had been duped and my mother has lost her mind. After several minutes of screaming my head off, she finally told me: we were going to a church to go see a visiting statute of Mary. Oh, and I was getting blessed. I blacked out from rage. I’m being held hostage for Jesus.

Holy. Shit.

We got to the church and I refused to leave the car. I made a huge scene, mortifying my mother. Like many desperate parents do in those situations, she offered a deal: she would get me whatever I wanted if I just went inside.

“Anything?”
“Anything.”
“Anything????”
“ANYTHING.”

I had the upper hand! What would any badass teen want that they can’t get on their own? Cigarettes. I made the offer, never thinking she would agree. But… she did. She promised she would buy them for me on the way home.

Into the church we went. There I was, this sort of lesbian-looking, miserable teen, standing in front of a church full of old women and Mary. But I did it and didn’t burn, surprisingly.

We left and didn’t talk much. I felt like I had been victimized. My mother looked dejected and sad. But! A deal was a deal, which I reminded her of frequently the whole ride home.

She pulled into a gas station a few miles from our house, went in and bought my cigarettes. She gave them to me as I sat in the front seat, shocked. Because I was a complete and total asshole, I decided to smoke one. I lit the cigarette. Then, the unexpected happened. I felt guilty. Overwhelmingly guilty. Angry, I threw it out after only a few drags.

When we got home, I went to my room and couldn’t wait to tell my friends what a sucker my mom was! But those phone calls never happened. I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I kept thinking about how disappointed my mother looked when she walked out of that gas station, over and over. Then, I did the unthinkable: I gave the pack back to my mother. I literally could not smoke another one.

We never really discussed what happened. We didn’t have to; she won. All those years of Catholic guilt paid off. I did the right thing.

Amen.

A Fashion Elite Turns out for ‘The True Cost’: A Documentary About What We Wear

If the title of the compelling documentary, The True Cost, directed by Andrew Morgan, sounds a little mercantile, it is. Dealing with the dreadful reality behind “fast fashion,” the greed behind low cost clothes, the exploitation of a work force in underdeveloped countries, and the marketing of unnecessary, non-biodegradable, expendable tee-shirts and other splurge purchases to a population that does not need them, the documentary makes you want to avoid H&M, Forever 21 and Zara. (This last, in particular is in a much-publicized suit regarding racism and anti-Semitism, but I digress.) The film makes it hard to rationalize patronizing these retailers, knowing that the low prices passed along to consumers are the result of dire costs in human lives.

At the New York premiere this week at Lincoln Center’s Francesca Beale Theater, with an after party catered by Dean & Deluca, Georgina Chapman (without her husband Harvey Weinstein, one of the hosts), Regis and Joy Philbin, Anna Wintour, Christine Baranski, Anne Hathaway, Isabella Rosellini, Julia Garner, William Ivey Long and many others came to support Livia Firth, executive producer and champion of the film and its ideals in fair trade, fair wages, and care for our planet. Many in the room were entrenched in the fashion world, on the high end, and I wanted to know how the film’s concerns affected their world. Firth, the wife of Colin Firth by the way, gave the example of conscious consumerism, buying some expensive Stella McCartney trousers, so well made she’d be wearing them for a long time. So, on the high end, the weight of this problem is not heavy, particularly when production is responsive to workers’ needs and safety; consumers do not buy as much as is needed to stay competitive in the “fast fashion” business model, where the poor are at risk of deplorable work conditions and low wages to keep churning out goods that no one really needs, and actually makes no one happy. The film goes far to make this point: more stuff has never been a source of human contentment.

Ecology suffers too, and the film does not shy away from exploring the contamination of cotton crops in Texas, pointing at Monsanto, as other films do. Many film images are grim, such as footage of the collapse of a factory in Bangladesh, resulting in the deaths of over 1,000 people. I asked director Andrew Morgan, what was the most difficult scene to shoot. The workers strike in Cambodia and subsequent crack down by police, he said. The crew was always at the edge of safety.

‘The True Cost’ Premieres in London

Livia Firth rounded up fashion names including Tom Ford, Natalie Massenet, Nicole Farhi and Stephen Jones on Wednesday night for the London premiere of “The True Cost,” a hard-hitting documentary on the garment industry that she co-executive produced.
The film, directed by Andrew Morgan, screened in Cannes earlier this month, ahead of its global release Friday. Morgan was prompted to examine the industry following the Rana Plaza tragedy in Bangladesh in 2013, when a garment factory collapsed, killing 1,129 workers. In his film, Morgan trains his eye on the effect of the entire fast-fashion supply chain, from farmers in India being indebted to corporations selling genetically modified cotton, to pesticides used in cotton production causing birth defects in Indian children and workers’ wages being driven down as firms aim to reduce costs.
“We’ve all been entrapped in the last 15, 20 years by fast fashion, to buy so fast, at always the cheapest prices, and this movie shows what the real cost of this cycle is,” said Firth, who is known for launching the Green Carpet Challenge. As part of the initiative, she commissions designers to create sustainable creations, which she wears when she hits the red carpet with her actor husband Colin Firth.

Here’s Who Ben Mendelsohn Wants To Play In ‘Star Wars’ If Those Rumors Are True

Ben Mendelsohn is having quite the moment, and if those “Star Wars” rumors end up being true, he’s bound to become a household name in Hollywood.

The Australian actor has been well-known back home since he was a teenager, but you’ve likely seen him more and more recently in American films and TV shows. He was killed by Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises,” played Jessa’s father in HBO’s “Girls,” and appeared alongside Brad Pitt in “Killing Them Softly.”

This year alone, Mendelsohn’s credits include Netflix’s “Bloodline,” Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut “Lost River,” gambler film “Mississippi Grind ” and indie Western “Slow West.” Let’s also not forget that he might star alongside Felicity Jones in “Star Wars: Rogue One.”

In John Maclean’s feature film debut, “Slow West,” Michael Fassbender (who previously worked with Maclean on two short films), plays Silas, a mysterious traveler headed west in 16th-century Colorado. Silas helps 16-year-old Scottish boy Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee) on his journey to find the girl he loves until they run into Mendelsohn’s Payne, a villainous leader of a gang of bounty hunters.

The Huffington Post sat down with Mendelsohn at the Tribeca Film Festival last month to discuss the wardrobe he took home from “Slow West,” who he’d like to play in the “Star Wars” universe, and his bizarre dance in “Lost River.”

slow west mendelsohn

I loved “Slow West.” It’s so beautifully made.
Yeah, [Maclean] did really well, didn’t he? It’s beautifully shot. He’s got something, that guy. And Fassbender found him, or they found each other. So I just got asked on board when it was all in its shape and I have a little turn in it.

You don’t show up in too many scenes, but when Payne is on screen he definitely makes an impression.
This, I like this. And that coat [points to the film poster].

Payne’s coat is amazing! Did you get to keep it?
I have that coat. I have it sitting on a mannequin at home. I don’t have memorabilia, but try to take a bit of wardrobe, usually because they dress me better than I dress myself. But that coat, that’s a thing of beauty. I’m very proud of it.

Are you going to wear it around?
Yeah, I suppose I might bust it out in moments of great bravery or just deep cold. I did wear it for the premiere in Sundance.

What was it like working with Fassbender?
Michael had a lot of stuff to do. It was all drunk hoo-ha and boy, he did some incredibly dangerous things around a fire, which aren’t in the [final] cut. There was some falling, some drunken shenanigans near fires and rocks, sh*t that I was going, “Oh, f**k.” But there’s a fearlessness to the way he works that is pretty admirable. And Kodi [Smit-McPhee], there’s such a delicateness to him. When he starts acting, he feels like gossamer. It was a good couple of days.

tv show gifs
Image via Tumblr

You’ve been so well-known in Australia, but now you’re finally having a breakthrough in the U.S. What’s that feel like?
It’s cool. It’s been a great several years. I came here for a very, very long time and just couldn’t get any sort of traction going. There were a couple of people who liked me, but it didn’t translate into anything that was employment based. I like to think that what really helped it was the one-two punch of “Animal Kingdom” and either “Place Beyond the Pines” or “Killing Them Softly.” Those combined really seemed to set some wind in the sails. It’s been a dreamy couple of years.

I bet. And now there’s those “Star Wars” rumors …
Yeah, there are those rumors.

So, are they just rumors?
They — I can definitively and honestly say to you that I have no job yet that I know of to go to. That may change. I would be very happy if that came to pass, but at this stage it’s just chatter.

Ideally, if you were in it, what character would you want to play?
It would depend. I think that the Empire has such room. We only know of a few people on the Empire side of the fence. “Star Wars” is populated by so many great types, who wouldn’t want to be a Han Solo kind of dude? And then you’ve got the whole Luke strain. I don’t think that they’re likely to — I’d be thrilled, actually, if they were looking at me for a Skywalkery-type of a number. But yeah, there’s a lot.

You also worked with Gosling again in “Lost River,” where you have singing and dancing scenes. Had you ever done something like that before?
No, I’ve never sung before. That’s me doing my Frankie Laine impersonation. There’s a little film I did where I sing a bit, but nothing like that. And the dance was something we just figured out very last minute just before we were going to shoot the scene. We knew we had it coming up and I went down there and we put on a A$ AP Rocky track and just danced off.

That’s even more bizarre because that’s totally different from the song playing in the scene.
That’s right, it’s not [the same]. But if you ever want to hear what it was that I was dancing to, it is “F**king Problems.”

Did you know the song before that?
Yeah, I was familiar with the opus. I’m a reasonably — I have my phases — but I really like music.

“Slow West” is now playing in select theaters.
