Pregnant Woman Walking (and Other Mystifying Acts)

2015-11-09-1447094301-716822-12190935_709170705851456_120202915055949533_n.jpg
There’s no doubt about it: I’m ready to pop. The thought of, “Is she really in there?” has completely subsided and has been replaced with the inevitable juxtaposition of, “When the hell is she coming out?”

Within the span of a month, my wife and I have gone to a wedding, a funeral and now, soon, a birth — our own daughter. The circle of life is captivating and, I might add, a bit discombobulating. Take for instance what happened at the wedding. I thought I’d be nice and grab a glass of wine for my wife so that she could visit with our friends and their six-month-old daughter at our table. Had I realized the looks I’d receive on the walk back to my seat, I might have done it sooner! Mouths dropped open and eyes widened as a nine-month pregnant woman walked across the room from the bar with a heavy pour of white. Note to self: carry a cigarette in the other hand next time. The disapproval rating was higher than Trump’s hair in an Aqua Net windstorm.

A very similar occasion occurred the last time I walked up a very steep hill from my office to the OB. Not one, but two different men turned their heads as I walked by them. And when I smiled, they avoided eye contact. It was almost as though they were threatened by my outrageous audacity to maneuver a hill “in my condition.” Is a pregnant woman not supposed to walk? “Gee, I’m sorry, I left my personal mule at home for the day. I knew I forgot something!”

But I digress.

Call me crazy, but being pregnant isn’t an excuse to be lazy. In fact, if anything it’s done more to scoot me into the highest gear possible for preparation. And, for the record, I do understand that every pregnancy is different and every situation is unique in terms of being able to physically handle certain stressors, so let’s get that PC bullshit out of the way right now. But for those of us who have been cleared to entertain anything other than sheer bed rest, life doesn’t stop the moment you conceive.

I haven’t even met my daughter yet, but I am already her biggest fan. She is going to grow up in a world where women can helm their own companies and corporations; can utilize every facet and square inch of their brains to become scientists, engineers, biologists, entrepreneurs, entertainers and heads of state. She can also choose to be a stay-at-home mom, a writer, a fishmonger or any other profession she prefers — and isn’t that the beauty of it all?

Success comes with hard work and sacrifice. That hill I walk up once every week now to see the doctor is getting more steep with each passing day. That short walk I took to get my wife a glass of wine at the wedding might take me twice as long today as it did a few weeks ago. The Running Man dance I pulled off to showcase my desirable talents to friends might actually pop out a kid if I were to do it this morning. And that mule I proverbially left at home, well, there’s no way I’d ever be able to mount that thing now, so forget it.

The point is: the biggest limitations we encounter in life are those which we put in front of own selves. By getting out of our own way and attempting to do the impossible, well, it just might actually make the impossible possible. And all the passersby who look and taunt with their concerned eyes that judge, let them. There’s nothing to see here. Just a nine-month pregnant woman making her way in the world so that her daughter one day has all the opportunities afforded to every male counterpart she encounters. Call me a feminist; call me optimistic; call me overworked and underpaid, but I know one thing for sure: you will never get up that hill unless you take the first step.

Kim Dickens Reveals Answers About That ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Premiere

There’s a big reason to be scared on Sunday nights, and it’s only partially because you have work on Monday.

The much-anticipated “Walking Dead” companion series, “Fear the Walking Dead,” finally premiered on AMC, and it was intense. Things got started when Nick (Frank Dillane) woke up from a drug binge to discover that a bunch of people are dead and his friend is eating them. Realizing this isn’t normal, he runs into the street, gets hit by a car and winds up in a hospital bed, a la Rick Grimes – and the series gets underway.

Image: MoviePilot/AMC

We’ve heard the companion series would be way different from “Walking Dead,” and the premiere finally showed us what that meant. While the original show has been a lot about cool zombie head shots, the “Fear” premiere focused more on the struggles of Madison Clark (Kim Dickens), a school guidance counselor who couldn’t care less about being sentimental, and her boyfriend Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis), an English teacher, as they try to blend their families in the midst of a zombie outbreak. (Great timing, y’all.)

The premiere answered a lot of questions, but it raised quite a few as well. For instance, while struggling with a zombie at the end, did Madison actually get bit? And why do Madison’s kids hate Travis so much? Plus, Travis fixes a leak and says he saved them $ 300. Would it really cost that much? If so, why didn’t we all just become plumbers?

Luckily, “Fear” actress Kim Dickens talked with The Huffington Post about the premiere to answer those questions and more:

There’s a struggle between you and a zombie at the end of the first episode. Did you actually get bit?

It doesn’t appear that my character gets bitten. That’s for sure. There’s definitely scuffling, as our characters are certainly naïve of the dangers of what exactly is going on. So we get dangerously close to them.

What’s scarier: fighting zombies or raising the teens?

I personally have not raised any teens, but I have been a teenager. I jokingly said my character’s training is that she’s been wrangling teenagers for a while.

Why do the kids hate Travis so much? He seems cool.

I don’t know if they hate him. I think it’s just sort of daily dramas that go with blending a family when you have teenagers, and there’s a new authority in the house and everyone’s adjustment to that.

Since a lot of the series focuses on Los Angeles, are we going to see health-conscious or vegan zombies?

They may have been healthy before they were zombies. But I don’t think they’re very discerning in their appetite. Or they are discerning but certainly not healthy. Our zombies are fresher because they’re less decomposed. It’s an earlier place in this outbreak. So our infected — we’re not calling them zombies or walkers, we’re calling them “infected” because that’s all we know — so they look different. They’re fresher.

Though you call them infected, on “Walking Dead” they’re called walkers. LA isn’t known for people walking a lot. Do you think that gives you an advantage?

[Laughs] Well, you know, you can get in your car, and you’re stranded in traffic, so I don’t think it’s necessarily an advantage.

Will we see any LA celebrity zombies?

Wouldn’t that be great? Or go see a zombie ruin somebody’s red carpet moment. I don’t think so. Not in the first season, at least.

Image: YouTube/MakeAGif

What is the symbol your character’s daughter Alicia gets drawn on her arm? Just a spiral?

I don’t know. That’s between her and her boyfriend’s character.

While in the hospital talking to the cops, Nick says he doesn’t even know what viscera is. Can you explain to everyone what is viscera? And can we expect more big words on the show?

[Laughs] I would imagine so. Viscera. Isn’t it parts inside the body?

Yeah, I think it’s like entrails and stuff. Speaking of that, when you guys go to the drug den there’s blood everywhere. Why don’t you call the cops at that point?

I’ve had a lot of dealings with the cops and probably wanted to get to my son first. [Madison’s] son on the show is an addict, so I think her instinct was just to try to get him on her own rather than go to the cops.

Early on, Travis repairs a leak and says it saves you $ 300. Would it really cost that much?

I don’t know. You’re gonna have to talk with the writers because that seems kind of pricey.

If the zombies don’t scare ya, the repair bills sure will.

“Fear the Walking Dead” airs Sunday at 9:00 p.m. ET on AMC.

‘The Walking Dead’ Still Dead to 2015 Golden Globes: 7 Snubs and Surprises

Out with the old, in with the new seems to be the theme for this year’s Golden Globe nominations.

Just a day after the Screen Actors Guild announced its nominations, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association welcomed newcomers “Jane the Virgin” on CW and “Transparent” on Amazon and left out previous favorites “Big Bang Theory” and “Modern Family.”

That’s not all who got snubbed.

2015 Golden Globe Nominations: The Complete List

21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Nominations Complete List

Keep reading to see our list of snubs and surprises:

1. ‘The Walking Dead’

The AMC series remains the most popular show on television, but it might as well be dead to the HFPA, who haven’t thrown the show a bone since it was nominated in 2010 for best TV series, drama.

2. ‘Modern Family’

After four years of love for “Modern Family” and its cast, the Globes have moved on. The show failed to score a single nomination, even though it garnered the most TV nominations from the Screen Actors Guild on Wednesday. Even “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” the freshman comedy that won best TV series, musical or comedy, and earned a Globe for star Andy Samberg last year, came up empty.

3. ‘Unbroken’

Usually, the Hollywood Foreign Press can’t resist Angelina Jolie. She scored a nomination for the box office bomb “The Tourist” in 2010 and her directorial debut, “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” in 2012. But her latest film, “Unbroken,” which opens Christmas Day, failed to score a nomination for best drama or its director, Jolie.

4. Bradley Cooper

“American Sniper” star Bradley Cooper came up empty again today. After being left off Wednesday’s SAG Awards nominees list, he once again missed the mark with the Foreign Press Association. The Clint Eastwood film, which opens Christmas Day, has so far been shut out of the awards race.

5. ‘Interstellar’

Director Christopher Nolan is no stranger to snubs, and once again this year, he got no love for his space epic “Interstellar,” starring last year’s Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey. The film was also left out of all the major categories, though it did manage to grab a nomination for best score by Hans Zimmer, which is more than it got from the Screen Actors Guild on Wednesday.

6. ‘Selma’

At least “Selma” rebounded well after being excluded from the SAG nominations. Like “American Sniper” and “Unbroken,” the MLK and voting rights biopic, which opens Christmas Day, was not completed in time to get screeners to SAG voters. Not so with the Globes. The film earned a nomination for best motion picture, drama, best director for Ava DuVernay and best actor for star David Oyelowo.

7.  ’Boardwalk Empire’

Unlike other series, which go out with a trove of awards, “Boardwalk Empire,” which ended its fifth and final season in October, came up dry. HBO’s Prohibition era series won for the show and its star Steve Buscemi in 2011 and earned nominations in 2012 and 2013.

‘Walking Dead’ Brick Building Sets Help Bring The Zombie Apocalypse Home

Are you ready to build the dead? McFarlane Toys is launching a new line of construction sets (think: high end Legos) for “The Walking Dead,” and we’ve got all the details.

Yucking Up “The Walking Dead” to a Few More Emmys–Add Some Needed Laughs

Kevin originally posted this in his blog, MyMediaDiary.com.

Granted it’s a zombie apocalypse; granted it’s exhausting peeking around every corner; granted Atlanta in the summer without air-conditioning is brutal. But come on, let’s have a little levity.

There’s a fine line between tragedy and comedy. Shakespeare knew this as he preceded the haunted and soon to be hysterical Hamlet in the graveyard with a pun-contest with a local gravedigger. Even Mercutio, after he was stabbed, found time to squeeze out a groaner: “Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man.”

And what works for the Bard, certainly bears true for three of my favorite dramas.

Justified (FX): “Well, I’ll tell you, Raylan…”

In Justified, Timothy Oliphant’s Raylan is sentenced to his home town of Kentucky after going all Dirty Harry in the opening scene of the opening episode. He is forced to not only deal with his childhood buddy and current supremacist outlaw Boyd Crowder, the most verbose, eloquent, polite and delightful psychopath you’d ever want to meet but he also has to endure his dill-pickle father who repeatedly tries to kill his son and his non-biological father (and boss) Art.

Oliphant’s character, like his Eastwood-ish turn in HBO’s euthanized masterpiece Deadwood, has the scary calmness, good looks and wisecracks found in famous mayors of Carmel everywhere–prior to monologues with chairs at nationally televised conventions.

My favorite line, “You ever hear of the saying “You run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole; you run into assholes all day, you’re the asshole.”

The Wire (HBO): Omar’s Coming!

Perhaps the most ambitious and perfectly balanced series is HBO’s The Wire. After being told to see it a couple hundred times, I finally dove in last winter. A week or so later, all five seasons with (different locales and even different variations of theme songs ) I was so hungry for more that I just watched them again. And if you only see one of the five seasons (and you can almost see them all independently) bask in Season Three–when one fatigued Major “Bunny” Colvin decides to legalize drugs in certain abandoned city blocks and therefore clean up the rest of his corners.

The magic of The Wire is its depth of development despite storylines that follow at least seven different characters each season. And with each incredibly real personality, whether it’s McNulty the alcoholic, divorced, womanizing, too-good-at-his-job-bad-at-life mirrored in Dennis Leary’s Tommy in Rescue Me or my favorite, Omar, the scar-faced, whistling, shotgun-toting Robin Hood, you get humor along the way–the way you hear some of your best jokes at funeral homes. Life’s like that; it’s the pressure release valve.

To paraphrase Hawkeye Pierce, “if I don’t laugh, I’ll never stop crying.”

Breaking Bad (AMC): “Better Call Saul!”

The premise is funny and tragic enough–an excellent secondary teacher trapped in a non-supportive state for public education who has terminal cancer and stumbles upon a former lousy student who serves as his gateway drug into organized crime kingpindom. The final episode, thankfully, puts Walter White in the land of self-honesty when he admits to his wife that he did it all, not for the family, but because he liked it. Without that line (and the brilliant poison-in-the-sugar-rack) the series would have only felt half-completed.

But the supporting characters provide the laughs and tears. Jesse Pinkman’s constant use of “Mr. White” is cute, weird and completely accurate–how many of us meet our former teachers and would ever dream of using their first names? Gus, the drug-dealing, low-profile template that Walter hopes to emulate is coldly unemotional and therefore funny in his under-reaction to all circumstances–including his own self-poisoning–until he finally cracks seconds before the old “bell-on-the-exploding-wheelchair-trick” does him in, but not without a graceful tie-straightening exit.

Gus’s right-hand-hit-man, ex-cop Mike, has the greatest comic lines as he is baffled by Walter’s blend of Don Knotts and Vito Corleone. But more accurately, he is tired of Walter’s talking, rationalizing and collateral damage–as he too dies and wants Walter to “Shut the f___ up and let me die in peace.”

And when Mike and the spin-off bad man lawyer Saul Goodman are talking to one another or to Walt you’re bound to hear many, many great one-liners and necessary laughs.

Lighten Up, Francis

So with The Walking Dead–what to do, what to do as Season 5 comes trudging along toward us this October?

Last year I attended the Motor City Comic-Con with my son and daughter and saw a line reserved usually for roller coasters. It was wrapped around six times with folks waiting for an autograph or a chance to shake hands with Darryl, the crossbow hunting cracker, played beautifully by Norman Reedus. He was appearing alongside two of his co-stars from Boondock Saints who were coat-tailing it along with the success of the zombie drama.

Darryl and his now late-brother, and bigger cracker, Merle are the closest thing this heavy-metal drama has to comic characters–and even then, it’s like an episode of Hee-Haw, where the characters die by their stills. Everyone and everything else is solid pain and suffering.

I’d like to think that once in a while, whether I’m trapped in a safe prison or sharing some moonshine in an abandoned shack, I’d hear a joke or two. But not in this part of Dixie. There is no Saul Goodman giving Jesse a Hello Kitty cell phone, no Detective Bunk cutting a tie off a sleeping co-worker, no jumpy Dickie Bennett with a baseball bat hanging up Deputy US Marshall Raylan Givens like a piñata.

Nope. Nothing but slow-walking, loud-breathing zombies that one can outwit with a stone-throw, a duck call or an armless, jawless former-friend on a leash.

Even the real enemies, the same ones that Steven Spielberg points out in Jaws, Close Encounters, E.T., and Jurassic Park, the “normal folk” in Breaking Bad are not really worth watching. The first half of the last season offered the sanctuary of the benevolent “governor” that was only as safe as the utopian rabbit warren of Strawberry in Watership Down. But I was hoping that the boring old dictator would at least have some funny one-liners, even after he lost his eye to a samurai sword. But no. (Even Watership Down had a wise-cracking seagull with a funny foreign accent.)

And the second half of Season Four, painfully slow in its isolated stories of the splintered groups who escaped the demolished prison all plodded along to Terminus–another sanctuary that is also not what it appears.

The very un-Raylan-like final line from the very un-Raylan-like hero, officer Rick Grimes sums it up, as he is forced into a dark rail-car and is finally reunited with his posse of straight-men.

“They’re screwing with the wrong people.” Fans of the comic know that it was supposed to be the f-bomb instead, but either way it’s trite.

Perhaps the greatest tragedy in The Walking Dead will be the discovery in Washington D.C., if the weird genius ever gets delivered there by the lamb-chopped redheaded bruiser, will be that the first to be struck by the virus weren’t the fatties, according to Zombieland, but instead were the comics.

2014-06-25-Deadheads.jpg
Ben Webster’s lamb-chopped McDinkle is a bad guy with some great one-liners in “Deadheads.”

For a more realistic look at zombies, funnier lambchoped humans and the more likely banter that might occur in a chance-meeting of the two, check out (partiality alert!) Deadheads on Netflix by Drew and Brett Pierce, two former high school students of mine who found the lighter side to death, love and everything in-between.
