Darcy Baylor (Holly Hunter) is an academic administrator at a Mississippi college, but another round of budget cuts puts her job — like nearly everything in her life — in limbo. Her son Walker committed suicide seven years ago, and the only constants in Darcy's life since then have been her gardening and her best friend, Byrd (Carrie Coon). Shortly after her worrying workplace news, Darcy learns that Walker's old college pal Mark (Shane Jacobsen) is now the owner of a successful restaurant chain — a chain whose concept, down to the last detail, was stolen from her son. Darcy immediately packs her bag, gets in her truck, picks up Byrd, and sets out for New Orleans to confront Mark and settle the score.

Dead Weather Guitarist Explains Creation Of ‘Let Me Through’

In a new instructional video, Dead Weather guitarist Dean Fertita explains how the band created the track “Let Me Through,” off their latest album, Dodge & Burn. “The song was based around a bass riff that we just looped, and Alison [Mosshart] wrote the lyrics and vocal without guitar at all; just bass and drums,” Fertita said in the video.

News in Brief: National Weather Service: ‘Don’t Go Surfing Unless You Can Really Shred That Shit’

SILVER SPRING, MD—Warning that Hurricane Joaquin was expected to produce powerful winds, violent swells, and dangerous rip currents, the National Weather Service strongly advised Americans today not to go surfing unless they could really shred that shit. “As Joaquin gains strength and begins to approach the Eastern Seaboard, we would like to remind the public that they should not attempt to enter the surf if they are unprepared to carve up these bitchin’ tubes,” said NWS director Louis Uccellini, sternly warning that those not aggro enough to charge these gnar gnar waves are going to be getting seriously cranked all day. “All of our predictive models and real-time data suggest that the waves produced by this system will be beyond mondo, and we cannot stress enough that you should remain out of the water if you’re a weak little kook or chrubee. This is an extremely dangerous Category …

Ready for Leather Weather? Meet Zana Bayne’s Bright Ideas for Spring ’16

zana bayne

Even if you don’t know Zana Bayne’s name, you probably know her work. The leather maven’s decidedly bondage-y designs—harnesses, chokers, skirts, bags, etc.—have been spotted on the likes of Debbie Harry, Zoë Kravitz, and Anja Rubik (who sports hers regularly with crisp white oxfords). And if an undeniably dark appeal has characterized Bayne’s designs in past, her tropically-tinged Spring ’16 lineup, dubbed Bossa Nova, brings a new side of the label’s aesthetic to the fore.

Taking cues from mod icons like Courrèges and Cardin, the designer introduced juicy pops of coral and raspberry leather alongside all her classic noir (whatever the hue, all pieces are made by hand in her New York studio). Graphic petal shapes inspired by her ’60s influences appear as one of Bayne’s signature lattice-like skirts—ideal for layering over a prim midi skirt—but also in the form of footwear. Both ankle- and knee-high styles mark a first step into shoes for the brand. And for the truly statement-making among us, look no further than the Side-Eye Hat: a quietly Surrealist, wide-brimmed number in jet-black leather with a generous peephole cut in the brim, perfect for a little shade in the sun—or throwing a little shade in the sun.

Most children are enthralled by nature, specifically outer space and various weather conditions. Because not everyone lives in a geographic region that experiences tornadoes and hurricanes, picture books are a great way for children to learn about these events. A well illustrated picture book can help students understand how tornadoes and hurricanes are formed, and can help them overcome their fear of these extreme weather situations. When students who have been impacted firsthand by a major storm are able to see the explanation in a neutral, scientific way, it may provide a way for them to heal from their traumatic experiences.

Can’t Control the Weather – A Few Pointers to Keep Those Lo cks Looking Great on the Road

I did a column here last week about keeping our hair looking great in high humidity. We run into that ‘wall of water’ when we land in Miami, for example, or New York City in August … “Oh, man!” Hot and wet!

Part of the solution is that you just have to surrender some of that control. It is so difficult to keep the look you created in L.A. when you step off the plane in Atlanta. Depending on our natural hair, it can go flat and limp or wildly curly and frizzy.

Still, “be prepared,” pack your hair tools, favorite products and hair accessories along with a healthy dose of flexibility.

I recently traveled and forgot my conditioner and thought, “no big deal. How bad could hotel products be?” Well, they can be harsh on hair and, “yes,” they smell absolutely delicious and they suds-up like none other but be careful. Sometimes products with suds use a lot of sulfates, which can be hard on hair, especially if your hair has been chemically treated for a perm or coloring.

• My suggestion is to take travel-size products with you from home. Go to your favorite drug store and buy the small, plastic, airplane-approved, 3.4 oz. bottles and put your trusted products in them.

• When you head for another city, always pack a selection of hair accessories, including barrettes, which are trending strong, and ponytail holds and favorite hair clips. These are incredibly useful in taming hair when you’ve already tried hair mousse and gels. The variety of styles and availability is better than ever. Ponytails, buns and other updos work in virtually every environment from the boardroom to the gym. When you hit that wave of high humidity, a ponytail is a great way to go in a slick-back wet look.

• Humidity and free bath samples aren’t the only risks when traveling. Water is different everywhere. Some is soft and some is hard with lots of minerals. Those minerals can leave deposits on your hair, changing the texture or feel. Using your quality products from home can help this a lot. When you get home, detox your hair, wash it with a clarifying shampoo or a mix of baking soda and water. This will strip the hair of mineral build-up. Then apply a deep, penetrating mask or deep conditioner and let it sit on your hair for a good amount of time … Your hair will love you for it!

Remember, you can’t beat the weather, and you don’t pick the water coming out of the shower, so be flexible and patient out of town.

As always, be open to change!

Weather Forecaster Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop Unleashing Taylor Swift Lyrics In Hilarious Report

This is how every weather forecast should be reported.

Mike Thomas, a weather forecaster in Washington, D.C., delivered a special report earlier this week, ahead of Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour stop in the nation’s capital. Because you can’t simply give any ol’ forecast when Tay’s in town, his report turned into a flood of Swift references.

“I know what you’re thinking — Mike, I knew you were trouble when you walked in, Mr. Weatherman,” he says at the beginning of his forecast, which was also uploaded to YouTube, referencing Swift’s hit, “I Knew You Were Trouble.”

Later on, when describing the rain moving over the region, he works in a “Shake It Off” reference, saying, “This rain keeps cruisin’, can’t stop, won’t stop movin’ and should continue to fade away from the area over the next few hours.”

The hilarious report caught the attention of Taylor herself, who gave Thomas a shoutout on Twitter.

“Never change, Mike the weatherman,” the star tweeted. ”Never change.”

Mike, we whole-heartedly agree with Taylor. Seriously, you never missed a beat and we can tell you love the game.

Screw the Weather Channel! My Forecast Is Always Correct

Attention professional weather prognosticators, TV meteorologists, National Hurricane Center forecasters and anyone whose number one conversation topic centers around Fourth of July weekend atmospheric conditions. Yes, that includes this nation’s grandpas.

Put away your topographic maps and disconnect your flashy “storm tracker” computer modules; your interactive radar and satellite imagery are no longer needed. The local news weather segment can officially be reduced to 10 seconds as opposed to the four minutes weatherpersons currently need to inform the viewing audience that “there’s a chance those holiday brats may be a bit soggy.”

You see, I have developed a completely unscientific yet foolproof method of foretelling exterior conditions: a technique more accurate than Aunt Shirley’s rheumatism or the CNN “Blizzardmobile.” The latter, incidentally was pressed into service during the 2015 New York City “Needless Snow Panic” and will haunt anchor/Blizzardmobile passenger Don Lemon’s credibility forever, even if he scores an exclusive interview with the head of a covert Chinese hacking ring.

LEMON: Are you the person responsible for stealing personal information from 4 million U.S. government employees?

HACKER: Are you the guy who drove around in the Blizzardmobile?

LEMON: Yes, but…

HACKER: Ha ha ha ha.

I can affirm that everybody’s Independence Day picnics, parades, fireworks displays and the like will take place under brilliant weather conditions. I know this because I am not, repeat NOT, planning a party this weekend. Were the reverse to be true, I would advise everyone in this great country to board up your windows, take refuge in underground shelters and prepare for a weather cataclysm not seen since that ice age blanketed New York City in The Day After Tomorrow..

I have lived in my Chicago home for a dozen years but am most proud of what’s on the outside. In my humble opinion, my backyard is a combination outdoor man cave/Better Homes and Garden photo op. I have a deluxe gas grill, a fireplace, an island that can easily seat 12, and speakers capable of blasting tunes from any number of online radio stations, which I easily control from my iPhone. The only thing lacking are people to enjoy it for, every time I plan an outdoor get-together, they remain huddled inside, gazing at Mother Nature’s wrath.

My daughter has attended two high school “spring” proms, yet has never taken an outdoor picture as both events were curtailed by rain and, in the case of her junior year, snow flurries. My wife’s surprise 50th birthday, held in late April when flowers are supposed to be blooming and warm temperatures arriving, was a balmy 38 degrees. The more guests I invite, the greater the likelihood of tornadoes. I have already told both daughters that, should they desire outdoor weddings, the attendees will consist of a justice of the peace and one witness. Increasing the guest list will cause a rapid rise in flood waters.

Last month, as Spring turned to Summer and we even experienced a 90- degree day, my wife and I made preparations for my daughter’s high school graduation party – June 7 to be exact.

“Just one nice day is all I want,” my wife said.

“Foolish woman,” I thought. “Does she not know our track record?”

Ten days before the party, she downloaded numerous weather apps and updated me on the “extended outlook,” a complete waste of time unless one lives in Arizona where the daily forecast between May and September never strays from “sunny with highs in the mid 100s.”

“It’s supposed to be clear and 75,” she exclaimed proudly. “We might need extra patio seating.”

I refused to share her zeal, for I knew that predicting weather 10 days out in Chicago was as accurate as stating in March that the Cubs were a potential World Series contender. Sure enough, by June 4, storm cloud icons had replaced the brilliant sunshine on her phone. The next day, lightning bolts joined the mix. The descriptive forecast for party day included the following phrases: “strong thunderstorms,” “severe weather possibility” and, the coup de grace, “chance of hail.”

On June 7 we indeed awoke to thunderstorms pelting our rented backyard tent. We hastily moved chairs, tables and hors d’oeuvres to the garage, which seats 30 comfortably. Thirty-one if you include my lawn mower. The rain subsided long enough to return everything to the backyard, but storms were never far away and soaked the remaining guests later that evening. The Weather Channel app showed clear skies with no sign of precipitation.

So America, set up your cornrow games, unfurl your Slip-n-Slides, launch your sailboats and make sure you have enough marshmallows to roast over those evening bonfires while fireworks explode in the distance. Delete the Dark Sky, Storm Shield and Weathertron apps from your iPhones as they will not be necessary.

However, if you have a spare moment, please stock up on plywood, bottled water and batteries. For I am planning a large Labor Day picnic in my backyard.

These Newlyweds Refused To Let Bad Weather Rain On Their Parade

Brooklyn couple Stephanie Pepin and Max Santiago’s wedding day on Sunday, May 31 started out beautiful and sunny — until 4 p.m. rolled around.

“The sky darkened and the clouds just opened up buckets of rain,” wedding photographer Kamila Harris told The Huffington Post. “There was thunder, lightning, fog, zero visibility — the works.”

The bridal party and family were supposed to take pictures on the piers in Williamsburg before the ceremony. But after a few quick photos, they moved the location to a high-rise building balcony nearby.

“The couple dealt with it better than anyone I have ever seen deal with inclement weather,” Harris told HuffPost. “The bride kept saying, ‘I love thunderstorms. Why is everyone freaking out, it’s just rain.’ And she kept a huge smile on her face throughout the mad dashes in torrential downpours. She is awesome.”

“The [couple] was soaking wet, but their clothes seemed to dry out,” Harris added. “Or they just didn’t have a care in the world and just wanted to be married. Nothing was going to stop them that day.”

Unfortunately, part of Pepin and Santiago’s wedding venue was flooded in the storm, so they couldn’t have the ceremony in the atrium of the Scottadito Osteria Toscana in Park Slope as planned. The FDNY came to help pump out some of the water and the couple said their “I dos” in another part of the restaurant instead.

Despite the setbacks, the newlyweds couldn’t be happier with how things turned out.

“All we have ever wanted was to be together and married,” the bride said. “Not only did we get what we wanted, but we also got a fantastic, hilarious, unexpected adventure and story to cherish with our friends and family.”

5 Beauty Tips You Need When Hot Weather Is Working Against You

beauty tips hot weather

Photo: Rolf Bruderer/Fuse via Getty Images

Once the temperatures start rising, the editors here at HuffPost Lifestyle pare down our makeup routines to the essentials: mascara, concealer and tinted lip balm. A full face of makeup just doesn’t hold up (or look as good) when it’s hot and sticky outside.

During the summer months, you can’t go wrong with wearing little-to-no makeup, but it does get tricky when choosing formulas and products that can withstand heat, humidity and even sweat.

To help you avoid hot-weather beauty blunders, we asked Jessica Scantlin, the head makeup artist at Blushington Makeup and Beauty Lounge, to share her tips and tricks.

1. DO invest in waterproof makeup.

Makeup has come a long way since the bulletproof-but-heavy liners, lipsticks and mascaras from the ’80s. Thanks to cosmetics companies like Stila, Kevyn Aucoin and Bobbi Brown, consumers have access to a wider range of products that truly stay put where you put them, without clogging your pores.

2. DON’T use powder products.
“Have you ever baked and placed flour in water without mixing it?” Scantlin asks. “It separates and forms in a clump, which is exactly what powder does to you in the summertime after a long day.” Your skin is extra hydrated in the summer and you will naturally sweat more, so that’s why this pro believes that creams are hands-down the best option.

Unlike matte powders, which sink into the fine lines and creases of your face, cream-based eyeshadow, blush and foundation glide on smoothly and help to create dewy, naturally flushed or bronzed effects.

3. DO set your makeup with a setting spray.

This product provides a light layer of protection to keep your makeup from sliding down your face. Cooling mists also work great to set makeup and leave your skin refreshed during those hot summer months. Scantlin likes to store hers in the fridge to ensure an extra cooling effect. Bonus: Most setting sprays smell great.

4. DON’T wear thick facial creams.

“Never use a thick cream in the summer as this will make your makeup slide right off your face,” said Scantlin. “Use something lighter and make sure to let it absorb before applying your makeup for the day.” She swears by moisturizers with SPF that are lightweight, yet still give your complexion a boost of radiance and hydration.

5. DO go the DIY route to combat under-eye puffiness and oily skin.
Don’t toss your tea bags! After steeping them in a pitcher of iced tea, let them cool and lay them on your eyelids. The caffeine from the tea helps to shrink blood vessels, thus minimizing puffy under-eyes and dark circles.

Want to create a great natural mask for oily skin? Grab some papaya. “Just simply mash it up and apply it to your face. The natural enzymes in papaya help pull out the oil without stripping the skin,” said Scantlin.
