You know Serena Williams as the 21 Grand Slam–winning tennis star, whose fierceness on the court is only rivaled by her kindness off it. But there’s another passion Williams has been quietly pursuing for years: fashion design. Williams is no ordinary celebrity-turned-designer. Consider her boundary-pushing court style, her two years of fashion school, and her experience designing her own collections at HSN and Nike. It was with HSN that she presented a Spring 2016 collection at New York Fashion Week earlier today, to an audience including Anna Wintour, Gigi Hadid, Lily Aldridge, and her rumored paramour, Drake.
“I’ve always loved fashion. I was always that girl that played with my dolls, and I went to fashion school, so it’s not just made up for me. It’s actually something that I really enjoy and that I have a lot of fun with,” Williams told Vogue.com backstage before her show. Though she’s shown her HSN collection at Fashion Week once before, her latest collection bears her influence to a greater extent. Not only did she work closely with Guillaume Poupart, chief merchandising officer of Tiger J LLC, on each item, but she also sketched and designed the finale dress, a backless black number trimmed in fringe. “I love seeing something on paper and then seeing it in real life,” she said, motioning toward the piece. “Each time, even when I do it with Nike, I still get chills.”
Williams called the collection “a little bit retro, romantic, and extremely innovative.” The fringed suede jackets and dresses are decidedly more posh than your typical HSN fare, and the shearling pieces are expected to retail at a luxury price point. “I want [my customers] to feel empowered. I want them to feel beautiful. The collection works on every size person. You should [be able] to look good and feel good and love who you are and, at the same time, be stylish. We want our ladies to be stylish, too,” she smiled.
