Gloria Steinem talked passionately about what’s most important now at Eileen Fisher’s “Women Together” initiative Friday.
Steinem was the featured speaker at a full-day program intended to empower women to find their voices and connect with one another. The ticketed event, with 90 attendees, was also live-streamed before an audience of 235 people. It took place at the Eileen Fisher Learning Lab in Irvington, N.Y.
“I believe a collective energy emerges when women connect with other women,” said Eileen Fisher, founder and chairman of her brand. “Our Women Together events offer meaningful opportunities for women to connect more deeply — with themselves and one another.” She said her goal is to do these events once a month.
Titled “Revolution From Within,” the event was filled with women from several generations sitting in talking circles. The day also featured writer Jamia Wilson and international 5Rhythms movement leader Amber Ryan.
Steinem, who has been leading women in the movement for decades, was asked by Antoinette Klatzky, executive director and co-creator of the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute, what’s important in this moment about women coming together.
“Well, that you do it,” said Steinem. “We are communal animals as human beings. We can’t function all by ourselves. There’s a

FASHION BUILDING BLOCKS: As a former model, Siamanda Chege understands the global scope of fashion and is trying to use that knowledge to help orphaned children in her homeland of Kenya.
Her nine-year-old label Bebe Ravi is sold in select specialty stores with more than 10 percent of all purchases benefiting the Patrick Chege Memorial Orphanage that she started in impoverished Nakuru, Kenya. The area has an unemployment rate as high as 40 percent and many of the women are widows due to the AIDS epidemic. Bebe Ravi pays its workers a living wage and provides them with free meals. In addition to helping these sole breadwinners with access to income, the company’s strategy aims to help propel the community forward.

GET SMART: Burberry is marking International Women’s Day by spreading the love, and the checks and the trench coats, to women in need of work wardrobes. Since 2013, the brand has been teaming with the British women’s charity Smart Works, which offers new, donated clothing and styling advice to women in need who are trying to get back into the workforce. Burberry has always donated clothing to Smart Works, but this year for the first time it invited seven women from the program into its London showrooms for a styling session and the opportunity to pick out their capsule work wardrobes.
The clients are at stage two of the Smart Works program, meaning they have secured employment and will need clothing to wear to their new jobs, ahead of their first pay checks. Half of Smart Works’ clients are from an ethnic minority, are long-term unemployed and have been unsuccessful with a large number of job applications. Smart Works said the majority of women it helps eventually secure full employment and that it aims to dress 3,500 women this year in the U.K.

No one needs reminding that the world is not a peaceful place, but attendees at Friday’s United Nations Women for Peace Association’s annual luncheon preferred to focus on the positive.
While the annual event honored actor-director-producer Ben Stiller, fashion designer Naeem Khan, philanthropists Albert and Deidre Pujols and “India’s Daughter” filmmaker Leslee Udwin, their messages stressed the need for greater women’s empowerment, improved training, workers’ rights and safety.
Before the program got under way, former New York City police commissioner Ray Kelly, who cochaired the event, spoke of what needs to happen for fashion companies to help with the problem of human trafficking. “Attention has to be drawn to it. It’s a problem that is sort of under the radar. It exists to a large extent in Eastern Europe, Central America and South America,” he said. “Sometimes it’s not as obvious as you think it would be. There is leverage being exerted against relatives, a village or something like that. It does not necessarily come to the fore; even when you question these young women, they are not coming forward with information in many instances. They have to consider what’s being held over them so it’s not always easy to investigate the

With a bust size of 34S, Stephanie Nelson knows a little bit about the struggles of finding a bra that fits and supports her situation properly. Ms. Nelson has launched a $ 100,000 GoFundMeeffort to support other women in the journey of locating bras that both look and feel good in an overall bid to promote breast health.
Some readers might remember Nelson as one of our Baes and Baddies entries under the name persephanii, and as we noted then, her curvaceous frame is without a doubt a head-turner. However, she’s noticed the plight of women of her busty ilk in noting that many of them are wearing ill-fitting bras and how that could be contributing to their back pain and the like.
I am a size 34S and I have no pain associated with my back and shoulders from having large breasts! It was not always like that. I wore poor suppprting bras thatugged on my back and shoulders to the point of me considering having a breast reduction.
Breast health is extremely important. Finding the right size is even more important. Many women walk around with pain in their back, shoulder and chest because they cannot find the right size. As a breast healthy woman I fear there could be a correlation to breast diseases and wearing poor supporting bras. I would like to raise money to not only purchase new bras for myself but also do give aways and events and help other women with large breasts find bras that fit well, improve their posture and help get rid of pain.
With all of that being said. BRA’S are expensive. Please donate if you’d love to see a reduction in pain and more confident breast healthy women near you!
Nelson kept it a stack in saying she wants to cop new wears for herself, but the larger goal of helping others is really the best part in all of this. Salute to her.

Women play starring roles in a flurry of films that will carry through the holiday season. But when it comes to the status of women in Hollywood, as Thursday’s Golden Globe nominations suggested, it often feels like there’s a step back — or at least a pause — for every step forward.
The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., has never done a fashion exhibition. For its first, it chose to focus on two living American designers who have owned and operated their label independently from its inception. The exhibition, titled simply “Rodarte,” opens Nov. 10 and runs through Feb. 10, 2019, showcasing nearly 100 pieces from 18 collections by Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the sisters who started their California-based label 13 years ago.
This is not the first time a museum has come calling to feature the Mulleavys’ work — the Cooper Hewitt staged a show on Rodarte in 2010, as did the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles the following year — but the National Museum of Women in the Arts’ show is Rodarte’s biggest yet. Guest curator Jill D’Alessandro, who oversees costume and textile arts at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, worked with the Mulleavys to break down their collections into recurring themes: Early Innovations, Magical Beautiful Horror, Woodshock, Black Swan, Texture, Northern California Roadmap, Light and The Garden. The pieces are displayed in full, original runway looks with hair by Odile Gilbert and an installation by Rafael de Cardenas/Architecture at Large.

Veteran producer/director Emmy Award-winner Diane English ("Murphy Brown") helms the proto-feminist comedy drama, following the gossip, wisecracking, and overall disillusionment that erupts among a group of socialite friends when their dearest and most envied learns of her husband's marital infidelity at the hands of a backstabbing shopgirl. This all female cast is lead by Golden Globe-nominee Meg Ryan ("When Harry Met Sally"), Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-nominee Annette Bening ("American Beauty"), Eva Mendes ("Hitch"), Emmy Award-winner and Golden Globe-nominee Debra Messing (TVs "Will and Grace"), Jada Pinkett Smith ("The Matrix Reloaded"), and Academy Award-nominee, Emmy and Golden Globe-winner Candice Bergen ("Miss Congeniality") with supporting roles by Academy Award-nominee, Emmy Award and Golden Globe-winner Bette Midler ("Beaches"), Academy Award, Emmy Award and Golden Globe-winner Cloris Leachman ("Young Frankenstein"), and Carrie Fisher ("Star Wars").
Playwright and screenwriter Joshua James has gathered thirty monologues for women, collected from his plays 2 VERY DANGEROUS PEOPLE SHARING 1 SMALL SPACE, RUNNING IN PLACE, OLD DOG and many more, for actors to use for auditions, scene study or solo performance projects. "Joshua James' work is bold, intelligent and subversive. Read it. Then find a way to make it happen on stage. American theater is clogged with the paltry visions of the privileged class, which assure us that the world we live in does not need immediate and radical change. James' work pulls the plug on sentimentality and comfort on stage. His work is at times dark, disturbing, but always arresting and shot through with a fine sense of humour." – Obie-award winning playwright Naomi Wallace

Two main reasons a lot of men we know (no names, please) bite their nails instead of doing the civilized thing and getting their hands manicured: 1) No patience to make the round-trip (or spend the money) to see a pro for some small dangler nobody notices but you; and 3) Too insecure in their manhood to sit in a nail salon chair. Porter, Net-a-porter’s print magazine, on Wednesday held its second annual Incredible Women Gala at NeueHouse West Hollywood, in association with Estée Lauder. Hosted by editor in chief Lucy Yeomans and Universal chairman Donna Langley, the event drew Charlize Theron, Brie Larson, Elizabeth Banks, Mary J. Blige, Melanie Griffith, Raquel Welch, Kate Bosworth and more.
The Incredible Women list, now in its third year, grew out of a cover line on Porter’s first issue. It has since spawned a talk series that began with Christy Turlington Burns in 2014 and has included American Ballet Theater principal dancer Misty Copeland, film director Sofia Coppola and Serpentine chief executive officer Yana Peel. The first gala was held last year in London at the V&A Museum.
Partnering with Langley, who was profiled in the magazine in the past, made sense since this year’s list of 50 women was focused on the entertainment industry. The timing of this year’s gala comes when women in the industry have banded together in support of speaking out against sexual harassment. The magazine commissioned women including Copeland, Larson and the organizers of the Women’s March, Tamika Mallory and Bob Bland, to write open letters touching upon crucial issues facing women in
Porter magazine is bringing its Incredible Women List of 50 entries, which was published last month in its winter issue, to life with two events in the U.S. Tonight editor in chief Lucy Yeomans will host a question-and-answer with Misty Copeland, who was featured on the list, in New York and on Nov. 1 the magazine’s second annual Incredible Woman Gala will take place in Los Angeles at NeueHouse, hosted by Yeomans and Donna Langley, chairman of Universal Pictures. Both events are done in partnership with Estée Lauder.
The talk with Copeland is the fourth in Porter’s series, which previously featured Serpentine chief executive officer Yana Peel, conservationist Saba Douglas-Hamilton, and film director Sofia Coppola. Last year’s gala was held at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and instead of staging a typical awards show, Yeomans enlisted a company called Letter’s Live to create a performance element in which Natalia Vodianova, Christiane Amanpour and Florence Welch read letters Patti Smith, Martha Gellhorn and Tina Fey. This year’s gala will feature a similar performance aspect. “We look to celebrate women who in the past year have done something to affect positive change for women either in their field, industry or the
