Jay-Z Named Chief Brand Strategist Of Cannabis Company Caliva

Jay-Z just got onboard with the legal weed hustle. Today (July 9), cannabis company Caliva announced it has named the Brooklyn multi-hyphenate its Chief Brand Strategist.

Reportedly it’s a multiyear deal and Jigga is tasked with “driving creative direction, outreach efforts and strategy” for the brand. We’re going to say he has experience in such matters.

Part of Mr. Carter’s duties includes the participation of individuals who were incarcerated for their illegal marijuana activities. The goal is giving the aforementioned a fair shot at getting in the game post-legalization.

“Anything I do, I want to do correctly and at the highest level,” said Jay-Z via a press statement. “With all the potential in the cannabis industry, Caliva’s expertise and ethos makes them the best partner for this endeavor. We want to create something amazing, have fun in the process, do good and bring people along the way.”

Caliva is a cannabis consumer products company that was founded in 2015. The brand boasts a first-place finish in the 2019 High Times Cannabis Cup thanks to the “Z-Cube” in the Best Hybrid category. Other products it sells include vapes, tinctures and beverages.

Jay-Z wins, again.

Short Sellers Coming For Elon Musk’s Company On Twitter With $TslaQ Hashtag In Hopes To Cash In

$  TslaQ Hashtag

Source: Spencer Platt / Getty

Elon Musk should be riding a wave of momentum right now. Just recently his company Tesla announced its new crossover SUV, the Model Y and unveiled a leasing option for the model 3. But there is a growing group consisted of crowd-sourced short sellers on a mission to see Musk and his company fail so they can take advantage and make some money.

If you click on the $ TslaQ hashtag on Twitter, you will see a concerted effort from short sellers (investors who profit from stocks declining) to expose Telsa and its CEO Elon Musk in hopes to see the company’s value crash and burn. In a detailed report from the Los Angeles Times, writer Russ Witchell breaks down just how intricate this crowd-sourced effort is.

From having their own fleet of pilots called the Shorty Air Force who fly over lots exposing hundreds of cars sitting and a ground effort called the Shorty Ground Force who gather images of cars just collecting dust tell a different story than what Elon Musk’s Twitter timeline is saying.

Per The Los Angeles Times:

“Ten days left in the quarter, and they’re just sitting there,” said Machine Planet, peering down at the remote landscape outside Lathrop. Tesla bought those trailers to aid what Chief Executive Elon Musk said will be an unprecedented wave of new car deliveries in March. But to Machine Planet — that’s the name he uses on Twitter — the scene just confirms his suspicions that there are lots all around the U.S. filled with unsold Tesla cars. (He and others claim to have counted 52.)”

“If you spend any time on the Twitter hashtag $ TslaQ, you know what this means to Tesla short sellers. They believe the lots full of new Model 3s — and Models S and X vehicles, too — show Tesla has reached a cliff in demand for its vehicles. When the rest of the world finally admits the company’s days as a fast-growth story are numbered, they say, its stock price will crash, creating a bonanza for investors who, like Machine Planet, have bet big that Tesla’s shares are grossly overvalued.”

Again while they have done extensive research on the company gathering all kinds of info and photos, Musk is telling a different story about his company and business is good, and the cars are moving.

We will just have to see if Musk’s dream of owning the road, sending people to space and equipping homes with solar panels will come to fruition.

Starbucks Bans Porn Over Its Wi-Fi Service, Porn Company Has Petty Response

The Starbucks logo seen in Krakow...

Source: SOPA Images / Getty

Starting at the top of next year, coffee chain giant Starbucks is banning the viewing of porn over its free Wi-Fi service. In response, a streaming adult video company has banned the java from its offices.

TMZ reports:

Reps for YouPorn tell TMZ … the porn giant is now strictly pushing Dunkin’ coffee on its workforce. The company’s VP sent a memo to employees announcing a ban on all Starbucks products from YouPorn offices effective New Year’s Day.

Point is … 2 can play this game.

Starbucks just announced it’s blocking customers from watching XXX material while on their free WiFi, this after mounting pressure from the Internet safety group, Enough is Enough. YouPorn is simply responding in kind with a blockade of its own.

Starbucks made the announcement that it would be banning porn over its network earlier this week, and admitted that while it wasn’t a rampant occurrence, the company wants to truly begin enforcing the policy although rare cases have been cited of patrons watching naughty movies while having a cup of joe.

Act I – Scene 1: The market place: The scene is in Verona. Romeo, son of Montague, tries unsuccessfully to declare his love for Rosaline and is consoled by his friends Mercutio and Benvolio. As day breaks and the townspeople meet in the market place, a quarrel develops between Tybalt, a nephew of Capulet, and Romeo and his friends. The Capulets and Montagues are sworn enemies and a fight soon begins. The Lords Montague and Capulet join in the fray, which is stopped by the appearance of the Prince of Verona who commands the families to end their feud. Scene 2: Juliet’s ante-room in the Capulets’ house: Juliet, playing with her nurse, is interrupted by her parents Lord and Lady Capulet. They present her to Paris, a wealthy young nobleman who has asked for her hand in marriage. Scene 3: Outside the Capulets’ house: Guests arrive for a ball at the Capulets’ house. Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio, disguised in masks, decide to go in pursuit of Rosaline. Scene 4: The ballroom: Romeo and his friends arrive at the height of the festivities. The guests watch Juliet dance. Mercutio, seeing that Romeo is entranced by her, dances to distract attention from him. Tybalt recognises Romeo and orders him to leave, but Capulet intervenes and welcomes him as a guest in his house. Scene 5: Outside the Capulets’ house: As the guests leave the ball, Capulet restrains Tybalt from pursuing Romeo. Scene 6: Juliet’s balcony: Unable to sleep, Juliet comes out onto her balcony and is thinking of Romeo, when suddenly he appears in the garden. They confess their love for each other. Act 2 – Scene 1: The market place: Romeo can think only of Juliet and, as awedding procession passes, he dreams of the day when he will marry her. In the meantime Juliet’s nurse pushes her way through the crowds in search of Romeo to give him a letter from Juliet. He reads that Juliet has consented to be his wife. Scene 2: The chapel: The lovers are secretly married by Friar Laurence, who hopes that their union will end the strite between the Montagues and Capulets. Scene 3: The market place: Interrupting the revelry, Tybalt fights with Mercutio and kills him. Romeo avenges the death of his friend, and is exiled. Act 3 – Scene 1: The bedroom: At dawn next morning the household is stirring and Romeo must go. He embraces Juliet and leaves as her parents enter with Paris. Juliet refuses to marry Paris, and hurt by her rebuff he leaves. Juliet’s parents are angry and threaten to disown her. Juliet rushes to see Friar Laurence. Scene 2: The chapel: She falls at Friar Laurence’s feet and begs for his help. He gives her a phial of sleeping potion which will make her fall into a death-like sleep. Her parents, believing her to be dead, will bury her in the family tomb. Meanwhile Romeo, warned by Friar Laurence, will return under cover of darkness and take her away from Verona. Scene 3: The bedroom: That evening Juliet agrees to marry Paris, but next morning, when her parents arrive with him, they find her apparently lifeless on the bed. Scene 4: The Capulet family crypt: Romeo, failing to receive Friar Laurence’s message, returns to Verona stunned by grief at the news of Juliet’s death. Disguised as a monk, he enters the crypt, and finding Paris by Juliet’s body, kills him. Believing Juliet to be dead, Romeo drinks a phial of poison. Juliet awakes and, finding Romeo dead, stabs herself.

Can a Nation Attack a Company?

North Korea keeps testing missiles that can reach the United States. China could turn off trade with North Korea, and effectively force them to stop, but that isn’t happening. Why the hell not?

A story in Newsweek says the bulk of Chinese trade with North Korea involves just ten Chinese companies. The working assumption is that those ten companies are so “connected” and powerful that even the Chinese government can’t influence them, or might not want to try.

Fair enough. That makes the government of China common observers in this drama. Embarrassing for them.

But those ten companies are certainly our enemies. I’d say those ten companies are fair game for a cyberattack, a financial attack, competitive attack, and any other kind of non-military attack we can mount. My understanding is that only our government knows which ten companies are involved. If we aren’t moving against them, I don’t understand why. The Chinese government would try to stop us, but I’m betting they wouldn’t try that hard, if you catch my drift.

By the way, how do we know ten companies are the villains in this story? Sounds like the sort of thing a clever president would leak to the press to foreshadow what might be happening behind the scenes. I’d hate to be an owner of any of those ten companies.

Keep in mind that none of us has the required knowledge to distinguish a good idea from a bad one in this realm. I offer this sort of blog post to diversify the pool of ideas. That in itself can often be good.

You might enjoy reading my book because I published two blog posts for you today and reciprocity is hardwired in humans.

News in Brief: Boss’s Clout Evaporates After He’s Seen In Shorts At Company Picnic

AKRON, OH—Squandering the authority and respect accumulated during his tenure, Pantheon Systems senior manager Robert Crawford, 52, reportedly had his clout instantly evaporate Thursday upon his being seen wearing shorts at the company’s annual summer picnic. “Hey there, good to see you,” said the formerly intimidating supervisor, who moments after arriving at the Pantheon picnic site in a pair of khaki Izod shorts that rose above his knobby, pallid knees had caused his immense levels of influence to dissipate within a matter of seconds. “Nice day for this, huh? Hey, where can I get one of those burgers?” At press time, Pantheon’s employees who witnessed their boss inadvertently expose his pale, tufted stomach while reaching to catch an incoming Frisbee had silently resolved to demand a raise on Monday.

Salesforce CEO Cancels Company Events In Indiana After Passage of Anti-Gay Law

Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff canceled the company’s events in Indiana after Gov. Mike Pence signed a law on Thursday that could protect business owners who refuse to serve LGBT couples.

“Today we are canceling all programs that require our customers/employees to travel to Indiana to face discrimination,” Benioff tweeted.

That followed a tweet from Benioff on Wednesday, saying that the San Francisco-based cloud-computing company would reduce its investment in Indiana as a result of “outrage” over the bill, known as the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The law will let individuals and corporations use their religious beliefs as a defense if they are sued for denying service to LGBT customers.

Benioff did not immediately return requests for further comment.

Benioff, along with top executives from six other tech companies in Indiana, had sent a letter last week to Pence, urging him to veto the bill.

“We firmly believe in the separation of church and state as provisioned in the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States,” the letter reads. “The RFRA clearly blurs that line and opens the door to blatant discrimination.”

The National Collegiate Athletic Association also expressed concern over the law and reiterated its pursuit of “an inclusive environment,” NCAA president Mark Emmert said in a statement.

“Moving forward, we intend to closely examine the implications of this bill and how it might affect future events as well as our workforce,” Emmert said.

Pence defended freedom of religion in a statement announcing his signing of the bill on Thursday. “This bill is not about discrimination, and if I thought it legalized discrimination in any way in Indiana, I would have vetoed it,” Pence said.

‘Mom, I’m Gay, Own a Porn Company, and Am in a Polyamorous Relationship’ (VIDEO)

2015-03-05-1425585011-6228986-BenjamineHeath.jpg

I’m From Driftwood is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit archive for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer stories. New stories are posted on the site every Wednesday.

Coming out once is hard enough. But for Benjamine Heath, he had to come out to his mother three times, once as gay, once as owning a porn company, and once as being in a polyamorous relationship. Benjamine recalls how it all began:

[O]ne time we were having this huge fight, yelling at each other from across the apartment, and at one point she just screams at me, “Are you gay?!” And then I’m like, “Yeah, I’m gay!” And then all of a sudden the conversation just takes a complete 360, and she starts telling me that she’s completely fine with it and then goes into stories about her experimenting with lesbian relationships in college.

Next up, after dodging questions about his work and why he was traveling so much, Benjamine realized it was time to come clean about owning his porn company, CockyBoys:

[E]ventually I was just on the phone with her, and I just told her I work in the adult entertainment business and we own a porn company. And so when I told her, she just asked me the same questions that any concerned mother would. She just wanted to know if I was safe and if it was a supportive environment and just wanted to make sure that I was happy.

Benjamine had one last secret to open up to his mother about: his polyamorous relationship. As it turns out, she already knew:

But she didn’t know that we were in a relationship until last year, actually, when we were out at lunch together with her gay hairstylist friend. They were talking about me like she talks about me a lot to him, and she kind of let slip that I’m the son with the two boyfriends, in a really subtle way. And she didn’t follow it up with any other questions or really say anything else about it, and he just kind of went, “Oh, OK.” And for me it was kind of her just subtle acknowledgement that she knew about my relationship and she was totally fine with it.

His mother surprised him every step of the way and showed her love through acceptance:

[E]very single time I told her, she completely surprised me with her reactions to it, in which she really didn’t react at all. In almost every situation she was just kind of waiting for me to tell her so that she could tell me that it’s OK and she’s just happy that I’m happy.

First Nighter: Sam Harris’ Expertly Baked Ham, Victor L. Cahn’s Sly Villainous Company

If you were to ask me who the best male pop singer in the country is — not that anyone has — I wouldn’t immediately name bestsellers Michael Bublé or Josh Groban. I wouldn’t say Tony Bennett, who, in his advancing 80s, remains among our most impressive singers. I wouldn’t say the less prominent Michael Feinstein, Kevin Dozier or Philip Officer, all of whom are superb crooners. I wouldn’t say Kurt Elling, whom I classify more readily as a jazz singer.

I would immediately say Sam Harris. I would have said so ever since his 1983 triumph on the first Star Search season.

After seeing Ham, the adaptation of his beautifully written and often humorous memoir Ham: Slices of a Life (Simon & Schuster), at Ars Nova, I’m even more committed to my belief. Throughout the hour-plus turn, directed sleekly by Billy Porter, Harris intersperses songs — many of them abbreviated, which bothered me somewhat — with the story of his life.

A native of small and apparently intolerant Sand Springs, Oklahoma (pop. 6,000) — which, he tells us, has no sands and no springs — Harris recounts the story of a not-always-happy life. He wanted to perform from the time he was 3 but received little encouragement from his kind but perplexed father.

Realizing from an early age that he was different but only later understanding he was gay, he was so disturbed by his inclinations that he attempted suicide at 15. He swallowed a handful of Seconals and was only wrenched from an early demise by a household emergency involving his younger brother.

Nevertheless, Harris remained troubled by his urges well past the early successes — he refers to a “Sam Harris mask” — and was only set wise much later by a concerned Sand Springs psychotherapist. Then Harris reconciled with his nature and was able to engage in a long affair with Danny Jacobsen. They married several years ago and are jointly raising adopted son Cooper. These days they appear to enjoy a happy home life, which may account for Harris’ being less available for tours, et cetera.

While personally distraught, Harris steadily worked at performing and, as he tells it, had his emotional awakening when a teenaged singer friend took him to a black Baptist church. He felt his impulses suddenly liberated and found himself well on his way to becoming the singer he is today.

As he explains this — using a doorway on casters and two chairs as his only props — he makes it clear that what distinguishes him is that he’s staunchly dedicated to “[singing] personal.” This means that whatever he chooses to sing profoundly reflects his instinctive as well as examined history.

Everything he does comes from deep within him. His ability to transmit those impulses explains, certainly to me, his irresistible appeal. The Ham repertoire includes a title song he’s written with musical director and chiming-in sidekick Todd Schroeder, and two other rousing, clever Harris-Schroeder tunes.

He also reprises, by way of a medley, the songs he delivered during his Star Search rise to fame. At the end (and needless to say) he includes “Over the Rainbow,” but trimmed. About that crucial competition-winning rendition he says, “I did everything but tie explosives to my body.” He does sing it again in its entirety later. I won’t reveal the context but will say he uses an entirely different approach.

And it couldn’t be more enchanting. The depth of feeling he brings to it is matched only, in my estimation, by Judy Garland’s introductory Wizard of Oz warbling and represents one end of the wide range along which he sings. Now in his 50s, Harris is fit and as good-looking as ever and exercises masterful control over his voice. Yes, he continues to go for the over-the-top notes and the roof-shaking melismas with which he put himself on the entertainers’ map. That, however, is only one facet of his vocal strategies. As a result, he’s as nuanced a singer as exists these days.

Harris may revel in being a ham, but that’s not the single entrée on his meat-and-potatoes menu. Want to see and hear a top-of-the-line performer who also acts and mimics with ease? Sam’s the man.

When devious ladies get together, how do the power shifts operate? Victor L. Cahn explores the possibilities in Villainous Company, a 90-minute, two-act play at the Clurman that he calls “a caper for three women.” It isn’t much more than a nastily cheerful divertissement, but what’s wrong with a nastily cheerful divertissement every now and then?

Claire (Corey Tazmania) has come in from the rain with a couple of bundles and, she mentions, 41 cents change from her lunch bill. Only seconds later Tracy (Alice Bahlke) arrives with the missing package wrapped in blue paper that Claire has discovered she left behind at the Pyramid Furnishings Company. But she didn’t forget it. Tracy, who packed the intended gifts, deliberately left one out of the bag so she could bring it to Claire.

Tracy, you see, has been watching Claire for some time and suspects — well, knows, really — that Claire is up to no good. Tracy has decided she wants in on a racket she believes is underway that features purloined antiques and their escalating value, which means that having positioned a foot in Claire’s door, she’s going to remain steadfastly inside so as to get the drop on her prey.

She does that until Joanna (Julia Campanelli), a suave type, enters at the end of act one. As act two of the romp is underway, Joanna manages to manipulate the conniving Tracy and gets to thinking she’s achieved her nefarious end. But has she? Tracy has trumped Claire, and Joanna has trumped Tracy, or so it seems. But who will really come out on top at the finish, and what part in all the chicanery does unseen Eleanor play?

Eric Parness directs with quiet menace. The women — at their game of human chess on Jennifer Varbalow’s adequate set and wearing Brooke Cohen’s serviceable clothes — go about their thesping business more than efficiently. Bahlke has as much fun as the smilingly demonic Tracy she’s playing does. Tazmania is enigmatic as the perhaps put-upon, perhaps putting-upon Claire. Campanelli is properly lubricious as Joanna, the sort of ambitious person who’s succeeded at shattering a glass ceiling.

It could be that female patrons will object to a male playwright’s depicting three women as so unpleasantly acquisitive. They might object to a male’ director’s getting to handle the material when a female director could have done well too. But, come on, it’s only a play.
