Bumpy Johnson’s rise to power will be detailed in a new television series. Forest Whitaker has signed on to executive produce the show.
As the brainchild of Narcos co-creators Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein, the project will chronicle the gangster’s infamous war with the Genovese crime family to reclaim his former drug territory of Harlem.
Paul Sorvino, most known for his iconic role in Goodfellas, is slotted to play Frank Costello, an unofficial arbitrator for the Italian mob. Deadline reports that Whitaker will play Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson and the pair will seemingly share a lot of on air time together as Johnson saved Costello’s life in prison years prior. The story line will also capture how Bumpy befriended Malcolm X during his fight for social equality during the 1960’s.
According to IMBD this will serve as a prequel to the 2007 film American Gangster which focused on Frank Lucas, the right hand man to Johnson, as as he became Harlem’s biggest narcotics trafficker. Antoinette Crowe-Legacy, Gregory Cioffi and Vincent D’Onofrio have also been confirmed as part of the cast.
The straight-to-series crime drama will air on Epix and is scheduled for a 2019 debut.

Is your life worth an umbrella? Two women got into a fight over an umbrella and when both of their boyfriends jumped in, one ended up stabbed to death.
Police say that the incident happened just after 8 a.m. on Friday in front of a McDonald’s at 125th Street and Lexington Avenue. They say that a couple—a 46-year-old male suspect, who has since been identified as Jesus Santiago, and his 36-year-old girlfriend—were involved in an argument with another couple, an unidentified man in his 30s and a 46-year-old woman.
The Daily News has video of the fight, which you can see below. In it, you can see the two women struggling with the umbrella, before a man in Army fatigues, believed to be the unidentified victim, jumps in holding a knife.
Santiago allegedly joined the fight after that and took out a box cutter. Both the unidentified man and the 46-year-old woman were stabbed multiple times in the torso. They were taken to Harlem Hospital; the man was declared dead there, while the woman is in critical condition.
Santiago and his girlfriend were arrested but charged were not immediately filed. The New York Daily News reports that argmument may have also stemmed from a $ 35 drug debt.
That intersection of 125th St. and Lexington is a nexus of struggle.
Peep footage of the fight below. SMH.

Tareek Arnold, a 23-year-old man wanted for suspicion of attempted murder in Harlem, was in handcuffed and in custody at 32nd Precinct station Tuesday night (Jun. 23). Arnold managed to escape the station in handcuffs, and the chunky cops giving chase in a released video shows that NYPD cops might need to lay off the free donuts.
As reported by WCBS and WABC, Arnold was taken into custody last Tuesday and was set to head to Manhattan Central Booking for processing. Instead, cops say Arnold assaulted an officer, while handcuffed mind you, and was seen running down a Harlem street in WCBS’ video.
What makes the whole situation comical is seeing Arnold, who isn’t so slim himself, sprinting with his handcuffed hands while two plainclothes detectives valiantly give chase but ended up looking hopeless in the end. Other fantastic details is that Arnold has two tattoos, one that reads “Troll” and the other that reads “Militant Soldier.”
But on a serious note, a large manhunt was launched by the NYPD yet Arnold is still at large.
Police are asking anyone with information on Tareek Arnold’s whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). There is also the NYPD CRIME Stoppers website or folks can text their what they know to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.

The official music video for Dr. Maya Angelou’s “Harlem Hopscotch.” Dr. Angelou’s inspiring song is featured on the newly released album “Caged Bird Songs,” produced by RoccStar and Shawn Rivera of the R&B vocal pop group Az Yet. The song is about encouraging everyone, especially young people to persevere through life despite any obstacles! The game of hopscotch is symbolic of the difficulties of life and the obstacles that some face, whether they be wealthy or poor. The music video was directed by and features choreography from Emmy award-winning duo Tabitha and Napoleon Dumo, a/k/a NappyTabs, best known for their work on the hit television series “So You Think You Can Dance.”
“Harlem Hopscotch” was shot on location in Harlem, New York, and several Los Angeles locations, including the studios at YouTube Space LA, Venice Beach and downtown Los Angeles. The video features appearances by actress and singer Nia Peeples (“Fame”, “Pretty Little Liars”), dancer/choreographer Derek Hough, actor Alfonso Ribeiro, actress/singer Zendaya, dancer/choreographer Ian Eastwood, Quest Crew and dancers from “So You Think You Can Dance” and “America’s Best Dance Crew.”
Dr. Maya Angelou, an iconic American writer, poet, actor, dancer, director, composer, lecturer, civil activist and one of the most renowned and influential voices of our time, worked on this album prior to her death on May 28, 2014. “Caged Bird Songs” is a unique musical collaboration produced by RoccStar and Shawn Rivera, that thoughtfully blends the iconic poet’s words and vocal performances with contemporary hip-hop beats.
Dr. Angelou’s grandson, Colin Johnson, reminisces that music was such a huge part of his grandmother’s life. “She loved everything, from pop to country and, of course, hip-hop. With her dedication to social activism and how she illuminated the struggles and injustices of the urban experience through prose, there’s a direct correlation to hip-hop today. She was really excited about her street-wise commentary being presented in this way.”
