Prada Restores Historic Mansion in Shanghai

SHANGHAI VILLA: Prada has restored Shanghai’s 1918 mansion Rong Zhai and will unveil it on Oct. 12 with a fashion show of the brand’s 2018 Resort collection, which was presented in Milan in May. Prada’s goal is to turn the historic villa into a flexible site for cultural activities.
Originally designed for the family of tycoon Yung Tsoong-King (1873 to 1938), known in his day as the Flour King of China, Rong Zhai is one of Shanghai’s finest Western-style garden villas. Western architects and Chinese scholars and artisans have collaborated on the restoration. An opening cocktail reception will be held on Oct. 14, during Shanghai Fashion Week, as well as other activities, still to be revealed. Prada Rong Zhai will be open to the public beginning Oct. 17 for about one month.
Miuccia Prada and her husband Patrizio Bertelli, chief executive officer of the Milan-based group, began the restoration of the villa in 2011, reflecting their admiration for China’s aesthetic heritage. The couple are not new to such initiatives of preservation. They have supported the restoration of Milan’s 19th-century luxury shopping arcade Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and Palazzo Ca’ Corner della Regina, an opulent Baroque palace on the Grand Canal in Venice reconfigured

Sotheby’s to Auction Historic Grey Pearl Necklace

ON THE BLOCK: One of the world’s rarest pearl necklaces will return to the auction circuit this October. Sotheby’s will auction “The Cowdray Pearls” at its Oct. 7 Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels sale, and estimates that the Cartier-signed piece could fetch between $ 4.5 and $ 7 million.
The necklace itself is composed of 42 extremely rare gray saltwater pearls, and the auction firm says it is a near-impossible occurrence to find that many grey pearls that create a proper match. The necklace is accompanied by a pair of matching earrings, with mounts also by Cartier.
Chin Yeow Quek, deputy chairman of Sotheby’s Asia and chairman of international jewelry, Asia, said of the lot: “Natural saltwater gray pearls are rarely seen at auction and the present necklace, strung with 42 superb gray pearls and of aristocratic provenance, is arguably the greatest of its kind in existence. This is an extraordinary collecting opportunity for pearl and jewellery connoisseurs around the world.”
Sotheby’s first auctioned the necklace in 1937. The piece originally belonged to the Viscountess Cowdray, Lady Pearson, who died in 1932.
The auction firm also holds the record for selling the most expensive natural gray pearl at auction, with the December 2012 sale of the Wrightsman Pearl brooch for

Charleston: 9 People Killed In Shooting At Historic Black Church

Police in Charleston, S.C. have confirmed multiple fatalities after a shooting inside one of the oldest Black AME churches in the nation. A White gunman, who remains at large, opened fire at the Emanuel AME Church Wednesday night shooting and killing nine people.

Reports YAHOO! News:

Police described the suspect as a 21-year-old white man in a sweatshirt or hoodie and jeans, according to Charleston newspaper The Post and Courier. It cited unconfirmed reports that as many as eight people may have been hit by gunfire.

Charleston Police Department spokesman Charles Francis said the shooting occurred at the Emanuel AME Church around 9 p.m. local time.

He said police were still searching for a suspect, and he had no information on victims. Further details were not immediately available.

North Carolina television station WGHP, a Fox affiliate, reported on its website that some of the victims may have died.

Local broadcaster WCSC reported that the FBI was on the scene. The FBI could not be immediately reached to comment.

The website for the church said it has one of the largest and oldest black congregations in the region.

The church was built in 1891 and is considered a historically significant building, according to the National Park Service.

“We’re still gathering information so it’s not the time yet for details,” said Mayor Joe Riley. “I will say that this is an unspeakable and heartbreaking tragedy in this most historic church, an evil and hateful person took the lives of citizens who had come to worship and pray together.”

Church pastor, Clementa Pinckney, was among those killed. Authorities were still in the process of identifying the exact number of fatalities at press time.
