Exclusive First Review: Danner X Huckberry Vertigo 917 Goldrush Boots

As one of the premiere names in adventure footwear, Danner made its name on adventure boots as stylish on the sidewalk as they are sturdy on the trail. As one of the premiere destinations in men’s gear, Huckberry made its name showcasing the best gear for men in one online destination. Now these two renowned companies have come together on an exclusive collaboration that celebrates the best of both brands.

The Danner X Huckberry Vertigo 917 Goldrush is the first collab between the San Francisco retailer and Portland’s legendary bootmaker, and it’s only available at Huckberry. The Vertigo 917 has a sneaker-like soft outsole and supple full-grain leather upper, and it’s 100 percent waterproof. This means it’s not just comfortable but functional, both on the pavement and in the dirt. Basically, it’s a sneaker-boot.

5 Hiking Boots You Can Wear On or Off the Trail

Huckberry put its own spin on the Vertigo 917 by giving it a brand-new golden colorway, a Vibram gum sole, suede heel, and exclusive Huckberry branding on the tongue. The Gore-Tex lining makes it waterproof while allowing your feet to breathe. It has a pliable, three-layer removable Ortholite footbed, and the rubberized midsole is softer and far more durable than traditional EVA. The exclusive gummed Vibram outsole is made of XS Trek rubber for durability and traction. And a modernized version of Danner’s trademark stitchdown construction has cupsole technology that allows the Goldrush to have a wider platform while eliminating the sidewall. The nylon, Chukka-like stretchy nylon shank adds even more flexibility and comfort.

Most Comfortable Danners Ever?

We were lucky enough to get an exclusive opportunity to try out the Danner X Huckberry Vertigo 917s and can honestly say this may be the most comfortable boot we’ve ever worn—certainly the most comfortable Danners. They’re super lightweight and extremely versatile. We wore them to the office and found they go as well with chinos as they do with jeans; we wore them to see a band at a club and were on our feet hours with no complaints. And they are, indeed, weatherproof, as we discovered on an extremely wet and rainy weekend in the city.

The Best Online Men's Stores

We also found that they fit better than other Danners we’ve worn. In the past, Danners have always been tight in the toe and almost too firm in the sole for extensive urban trekking; not so with the Vertigo 917 Goldrush. The last is based on the original Vertigo footbed, but is wider and more forgiving, as the supple leather sidewalls and flexible construction don’t give our feet the squeeze. (Note: We’ve been accused of having hobbit feet and these boots don’t come in Wide widths, so we ordered a half-size up. The fit is ideal: snug but not too tight.) Furthermore, the gum sole allows for traction and flexibility that’s key to hiking the urban jungle.

The Danner X Huckberry Vertigo 917 Goldrush is available now, exclusively at Huckberry, for $ 220.

Review: The Gobi Heat Nomad 5 Zone Jacket

This Polar Vortex is nothing to mess with. Now is the time of year when when winter’s claws begin to sink deep below the skin, gripping our bones with the kind of chill we won’t be able to shake till April. Thankfully, advances in heated clothing technology have made it easier to get the gear we need to fight that chill. The Gobi Heat Nomad 5 Zone jacket sounds exactly like the right kind of weapon.

Gobi Heat

Formerly known as Dragon Heatwear, Gobi Heat is a Utah-based heated apparel company with products that include heated jackets, hoodies, pants, gloves, and socks. With 18 different heated apparel products, Gobi is quickly becoming a leader in the heated apparel industry.

The hooded Nomad is a comfortable puffer made of wind- and water-resistant polyester and a filled with cruelty-free filling. Light and packable, it has five heat zones fired by carbon-fiber heating elements: one on each upper breast, one on each side of the belly, and a large one in the back. The two outer zip pockets are ideally placed over the lower heating elements, so your hands get some love, too. This time of year, that’s a godsend.

The one-touch controller has three heat settings: Low, Medium, and High, giving you full control over your body temperature. And the bright, easy-to-spot LED indicator makes it a cinch to know exactly where you’re at. The ultra-slim 6700 mAh/7.4 volt battery pack is about the size of a smart phone and slides into an inner pocket gives up to 10 hours of battery life without the additional bulk of other heated apparel batteries we’ve seen.

For now, the Nomad comes only in Onyx, er, black. But it’s available in sizes from Small to XXL, which is great. It’s got YKK zippers and is machine washable. The only caveat is that it fits snug and runs a bit small overall, so “big and tall” guys may want to size up. But at least you won’t need to throw a bunch of layers under it before you head out.

Drake Addresses Blackface Controversy, Hood Pass Still Under Review

Washington Wizards v Toronto Raptors - Game One

Source: Tom Szczerbowski / Getty

Drake finally picked up his smartphone and took to Instagram to address at least one portion of Pusha T’s scathing “The Story Of Adidon” diss track. With the Virginia rapper using a photo of the Canadian superstar in Blackface, Drizzy clarified the reasons behind the picture but nothing else.

“I know everyone is enjoying the circus but I want to clarify one image in question,” Drake wrote Wednesday (May 30) at 10:55PM.

He added, “The picture is from 2007, a time in my life when I was an actor and I was working on a project that was about young black actors struggling to get roles, being stereotyped and type cast. The photos represented how African Americans were once wrongfully portrayed in entertainment.

Drizzy goes on to say that he and fellow actor Mazin Elsadig were attempting to highlight the battles they had as young Black actors trying to get into the game. Elsadig, 30, is an actor of Sudanese descent and worked with Drake as a cast member of Degrassi: The Next Generation.

What we’re wondering is of all the flame Push gave Drake, including claims of a kid with a porn star chief among them, it is beyond curious he chose this as a moment to speak out. Stay tuned as this will surely heat up over the next few days.
