Virgil’s Vuitton Is Already Selling Faster Than the Supreme Tie-up

LIKE A VIRGIL: Virgil Abloh’s first designs for Louis Vuitton have yet to hit the French luxury giant’s boutique network, but they’re already selling up a storm.
A pop-up in Tokyo that opened last week raked in 30 percent more in the first 48 hours than Vuitton’s collaborative collection with Supreme in 2018, Vuitton chief executive officer Michael Burke told WWD.
He attributed the success to “pure unadulterated desire,” citing particularly strong demand for tailored ready-to-wear, mini trunks in white leather and transparent and iridescent weekend bags.
“It was merchandised as a full collection,” he said, also noting that the rush came despite no dedicated marketing campaign, advertising or gifting. About 1,000 people queued up in the Japanese capital to be among the first to buy.
The Supreme collaboration, seen as a watershed moment for streetwear, sold exclusively last June through eight pop-ups in Paris, London, Miami, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Beijing, Seoul and Sydney.
Vuitton opted for a similar stealth approach for Abloh’s debut spring 2019 collection, first hosting pop-up stores in London and Shanghai last October. One in New York also opened last week, with the first day an invitation-only event for 200 people.
Crowned WWD’s Newsmaker of the Year last year, Abloh went from

Virgil Abloh’s First Louis Vuitton Designs Drop at London Pop-Up

OVER THE RAINBOW: The first items from Virgil Abloh’s debut men’s collection for Louis Vuitton have dropped at a pop-up store in London.
Abloh celebrated the launch of the collection on Friday with celebrities including Idris Elba, Rami Malek, Rita Ora and Frank Ocean. The space, located on Bruton Street, featured walls covered in a print from “The Wizard of Oz” showing Dorothy, played by Judy Garland, dreaming in a field of poppies.

Clothes were displayed in a transparent box printed with the LV monogram in a rainbow of colors, reminiscent of the color gradient runway that Abloh set up in the Palais-Royal Garden in Paris in June, for a show that was hailed as marking a watershed in the intersection of streetwear and luxury.
Over the weekend, Abloh reposted images of items people purchased on his Instagram Stories. It was not immediately clear if items have gone on sale at other locations than the London Pop-up. Officials at Vuitton could not immediately be reached for comment.

24 Sèvres Teams with Louis Vuitton on Exclusive Capsule

LONDON — 24 Sèvres is continuing its commitment to offer exclusive product from LVMH-owned labels that don’t have wide e-commerce presence.
After teaming with Céline on an exclusive range, the retailer’s next project includes the release of an exclusive capsule with Louis Vuitton.
Five of the most buzzy products from the label’s fall 2018 collection have been reissued for the capsule, including a black logo dress, the popular “Vanity” structured tote bag in taupe, the “Party” aviator sunglasses in blue-tinged frames and the famous Archlight sneakers recreated in a blue, yellow and white color palette.
“As the exclusive retailer for Louis Vuitton, 24 Sèvres has been a partner of the Maison since day one. This collaboration was a natural next step,” said a company representative, pointing to the retailer’s commitment to offering unique pieces that can’t be found anywhere else.
“This has informed the regular capsules and collaborations released since the launch in June 2017. Exclusive product is at the center of our product strategy.”
The retailer added that more capsules are in the works and it’s looking to engage a mix of luxury and contemporary labels that reflect the “mix and match Parisian lifestyle” and the way its brick-and-mortar counterpart, Le Bon Marché is

Virgil Abloh Writes New Chapter at Louis Vuitton

PARIS — It took just four years for Virgil Abloh to go from staging his first showroom presentation in Paris for his streetwear label Off-White to being named men’s wear designer for Louis Vuitton, the world’s biggest luxury brand.
But as far as the Chicago-born designer is concerned, his debut for the label on Thursday will mark year zero in terms of his fashion career. “To me, this is like my first show. Everything was sort of leading up to this,” Abloh said in an interview at the Vuitton studio on Tuesday.
“This is ‘life’s work’ territory, to distill, to be metaphoric in a poetic way,” he added, comparing it to Martin Margiela’s debut, when the Belgian designer laid out his groundbreaking design aesthetic. “For me it’s the same, but I gotta find myself, so this is myself on display and it’s simply about letting people see my silhouette.”

That might sound presumptuous, but Abloh is right about the scale of the task. His debut collection for Vuitton, the largest and most profitable brand in the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton conglomerate, is being hyped as the beginning of a new chapter in

Louis Vuitton Locks In Designers

PARIS — Louis Vuitton is primed to keep powering its growth trajectory with its trio of top talents.
On Wednesday, the French luxury brand, owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, said it has renewed Nicolas Ghesquière’s contract as artistic director of women’s collections. Specific terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The announcement cements the relationship between Vuitton and Ghesquière, who was signed on to design the company’s women’s line in 2013, succeeding Marc Jacobs. Under his tenure, the world’s biggest luxury brand has seen “unprecedented” growth in ready-to-wear and leather goods, Vuitton said in a statement.
Renewal of Ghesquière’s contract completes the trifecta of moves Vuitton needed to lock in its design talent across its various product categories for the foreseeable future. The house in March appointed Virgil Abloh to head men’s design. Off-White’s founder succeeded Kim Jones in the role and Abloh will show his first collection in June during Men’s Fashion Week in the French capital (Jones, after a few months’ hiatus, returned to LVMH to take on the role of artistic director of rtw and accessories at Dior Homme).
And in April, Vuitton revealed that high-profile designer Francesca Amfitheatrof, previously of Tiffany & Co., would take over the role

Louis Vuitton Unveils Second Installment of Jeff Koons Collaboration

PARIS — For the second chapter of its handbag collaboration with Jeff Koons, Louis Vuitton has co-opted two icons of French Impressionism: Claude Monet and Édouard Manet.
The new installment of the Louis Vuitton Masters collection, due to go on sale in 150 Vuitton stores worldwide on Oct. 27, will feature prints of paintings including Monet’s “Water Lilies,” on show at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, and Manet’s “The Luncheon on the Grass,” now in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
“Manet has always been one of the most important artists to me. To work with the image of ‘The Luncheon on the Grass’ gave me the opportunity to emphasize the importance of artists giving it up to each other,” Koons said in a statement.
“Within ‘The Luncheon on the Grass,’ Manet is referencing Titian’s ‘Pastoral Concert,’ as well as [Marcantonio] Raimondi’s engraving ‘The Judgment of Paris,’ which was based on a drawing by Raphael. It’s a history of humanism, of artists enjoying each other’s work and learning to find their way through each other,” he added.
One of the bags featuring Monet’s painting appears in an advertisement for the collection starring Léa Seydoux, one of Vuitton’s brand ambassadors, perched on a giant

Louis Vuitton Opens Private Museum Near Paris

ASNIERES-SUR-SEINE, France — Louis Vuitton is opening its second private museum in less than a year. But unlike the monumental Frank Gehry-designed Louis Vuitton Foundation in the Bois de Boulogne on the western edge of Paris, its new venture has a more intimate feel.
Dubbed La Galerie, the 6,500-square-foot exhibition space is located on the historic Louis Vuitton grounds in the northern suburb of Asnières-sur-Seine, which also houses the former family home and the workshops where the luxury brand still produces its most exclusive made-to-order items.
Inaugurated on Sunday with a garden party, the invitation-only exhibit was curated by Judith Clark, a professor of fashion and museology who has previously worked on shows about brands including Chloé and personalities such as Frida Kahlo and Diana Vreeland.
“We wanted it to be perceived very much as a gallery intervention,” Clark said during a preview tour of the venue. “It’s like an installation reflecting on the idea of exhibiting the Vuitton archive. It’s intended to be kind of slightly disruptive in that way.”
Spread over two floors are around 400 objects and documents from the house’s archive of 26,000 objects and 165,000 documents. They range from couturier Paul Poiret’s trunk to items from the Vuitton family’s

Cuba Libre: Louis Vuitton Heads to Cuba

Ever the pioneer, Louis Vuitton is exporting its legacy of art sponsorship to Cuba, which is now opening up to the world. At the 12th Havana Biennial, which gets under way May 22, the French luxury giant is supporting several artists represented by the Galleria Continua in Miami, including Anish Kapoor, Daniel Buren, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Shilpa Gupta, Nikhil Chopra and José Yaque.
Vuitton is also organizing two of its Art Talks — one with Buren, the other with Pistoletto — on the eve of the opening.
Having been a trailblazer in retail — it was among the first to open boutiques in Korea, China, South Africa, Mongolia and Kazakhstan — Vuitton is now doing for paintings and sculpture what it did for handbags.
