Copenhagen Fashion Week Highlights a Changing Danish Design Identity

COPENHAGEN — Bigger, better and stronger-than-ever was the take-away from Copenhagen Fashion Week, which concluded Aug. 12.
An air of optimism floated on the city, thanks to clement weather but also to the positive figures published by the Dansk Fashion & Textile trade association. Despite a continued post-Brexit slump and lackluster performance of the Scandinavian region, the domestic market experienced 12.3 percent growth in the first quarter of the year, while exports, notably to Germany, Italy and Belgium, were flirting with double digits.
“The indicators in the Danish industry are on an upward swing. One example is that buyers are ordering more styles in larger quantities,” said Copenhagen Fashion Week chief executive officer Camilla Frank for whom this positive outlook was the perfect mind-set to kick off profound change for the organization.
To strengthen the Danish capital’s signature, a meatier five-day schedule was streamlined and enriched to include graduate shows, showrooms and the fashion prize organized by heavyweight department store Magasin du Nord; the notion of off-schedule was made redundant, with presentations and other fashion events scheduled in equal footing with runway shows through a new vetting process; talks and round-tables opened to the public, and also host brands hailing from other Scandinavian

Hillary Clinton Fumed About Changing Passports For Same-Sex Parents In 2011

WASHINGTON – Hillary Clinton was furious about a 2011 State Department decision to replace the words “mother” and “father” with gender-neutral terms on U.S. passport applications, warning of the wrath of Sarah Palin, according to newly released emails.

“Who made the decision that State will not use the terms ‘mother and father’ and instead substitute ‘parent one and two’?” Clinton wrote in an email to staff on Jan. 8, 2011. The email was released Wednesday by the State Department as part of an ongoing dump of emails that Clinton sent from a personal account during her time as secretary of state.

“I’m not defending that decision, which I disagree w and knew nothing about, in front of this Congress. I could live w letting people in nontraditional families choose another descriptor so long as we retained the presumption of mother and father,” she wrote. “We need to address this today or we will be facing a huge Fox-generated media storm led by [Sarah] Palin et al.”

Cheryl Mills, Clinton’s chief of staff at the time, responded, “Reaching out to folks to find out.”

The State Department’s proposed change was intended as a nod to people with same-sex parents. Clinton learned about it from a Washington Post story published the day before. The article featured a gay rights group praising government officials for acknowledging “that hundreds of thousands of kids in this country are being raised by same-sex parents.” Conservatives grumbled that the change reflected “the topsy-turvy world of left-wing political correctness.”

But the department ended up not making the change. The day after Clinton’s email, Mills sent Clinton an Associated Press story with the headline “State Department steps back on gender-neutral parentage, won’t replace terms ‘mother,’ ‘father.'”

A spokesman for Clinton’s presidential campaign did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Clinton has had strong support from the gay and lesbian community in her presidential bid, but she’s also hit some bumps along the way.

In June 2014, she tangled with NPR’s Terry Gross (who tangles with Terry Gross?) over her evolution on same-sex marriage, and argued that marriage laws should be left up to individual states. Even at the time, Democrats had already abandoned that stance in favor of calling for constitutional protections.

And going back further, The Washington Free Beacon, a conservative news site, this week released audio recordings of Taylor Branch, a confidante of former President Bill Clinton, sharing conversations they’d had about Hillary’s supposed discomfort with gay people during her 2000 Senate race.

According to Branch, Bill said at the time that Hillary’s “conservative religious temperament” might make her uncomfortable with gay people “acting out or pushing her to the limit.”

But Clinton did a lot for the LGBT community during her time as secretary of state. She announced that gay diplomats would receive benefits similar to those received by their heterosexual counterparts, something they’d previously been denied. She also, in December 2011, gave a historic speech in Switzerland in which she addressed human rights abuses against LGBT people. Gay rights advocates said this was a first.

“Like being a woman, like being a racial, religious, tribal, or ethnic minority, being LGBT does not make you less human,” Clinton said in her 2011 speech. “And that is why gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights.”

Genre: Erotic Romance

Publish Date: January 6, 2014

Publisher: Justine Elvira

Seller: Smashwords

*Warning: Changing His Game is a stand-alone novel. This book is for mature readers ages 18 and up. It contains sex, sex, and more sex with a porn star. It briefly touches on M/F/M and M/F/F. Adult Films. XXX Movies. Porn. These are the kind of movies I've never planned to watch. It was a taboo topic where I grew up. As a kid I had only heard of it in passing. In middle school my parents would talk about my creepy uncle Frank and how he should look for a job instead of watching "those movies" all day. In High School boys thought it was funny to ask my friends and me to star in the amateur adult films they were making. In college most of my guy friends watched them, but I never had. When I moved to California that changed. After surprising my fiancé at home and catching him screwing another woman, I hopped in my car and started driving. I was running away from my old life and I needed a change. I remembered my friend Tawny inviting me to visit her in Los Angeles, so that's where I went. I didn’t find Tawny when I got there, but I did find her gorgeous roommate, Jared. Our friendship started out rough, but he gave me a place to stay and helped me get back on my feet. He became my best friend. My best friend who millions of women happened to lust over. Jared plays by a different set of rules, where anything goes. His lifestyle is unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed before and it scares me. When you live your life on the edge, eventually you'll fall over. I didn't want to see that happen to him. At night he’s just Jared, my Jared, and I’ll deny it to anyone who asks, but I’m completely in love with him. During the day he’s Brandon Boner, and the world is in love with him. Oh yeah, did I mention he’s a porn star?

The Cult of Cute: How Korean Beauty Is Changing the Face of Your Vanity Table

cute korean beauty

Inside a glossy, perfectly round tomato sits the smooth, creamy surface of a complexion-brightening face mask. A sullen panda bear holds the contents of a cooling-on-contact eye gel. A miffed bunny rabbit contains a pitch-perfect apricot lip tint. Welcome to the Korean beauty shopping experience. “They’re actually really good products,” says Charlotte Cho, cofounder of Soko Glam, one of three K-beauty import websites profiled in the September issue of Vogue that are curating the best of what the country has to offer. Dressed in crisp summer whites with a slim gold chain around her neck, the 30-year-old entrepreneur is combing the aisles of Manhattan’s Tony Moly—which, at first glance has more in common with Toys “R” Us than Sephora. “I have this,” she says, picking up a bright pink Velcro bow designed to hold hair out of your face while you wash off your makeup. Everything in the store, from the mustache-shaped wrinkle-reducing patches to the scrub resembling Pop Art–worthy lips is knee-weakeningly adorable. And if the history of Korean beauty trends has proven anything, your vanity table is about to get a lot cuter, too.

For all of the forward-thinking makeup and skin care advancements on American and European soil, from stem cell facials to lengthening organic mascara, South Korea’s wave-making influence has become impossible to ignore. Famous for popularizing BB cream, sheet masks, and facial essences, the country has cemented its international audience: This summer alone, Lancôme openly credited the inspiration for one of its biggest launches to date, the Miracle Cushion Liquid Compact, to the nation’s foundation technology, and Estée Lauder recently tapped K-beauty blogger Irene Kim to act as a global beauty contributor. And if South Koreans take the subject seriously (this is, after all, the birthplace of the ten-step skin care routine and home to the world’s highest rate of plastic surgery per capita), their packaging is judged by an entirely different rubric.

Turning over a banana-shaped sleeping pack in her hands, Cho explains, “Korean shoppers are super savvy [about beauty products], and they’re not loyal to a single brand, so companies have to make something that really grabs your attention to stand out.” She should know. To keep her three-year-old site up-to-the-minute relevant, it’s her business to not only test the contents of every jar, packet, and pig, but to determine what will sell. Her forthcoming book, The Little Book of Skincare: Korean Beauty Secrets for Healthy, Glowing Skin (due out in November), even chronicles the cultural obsession in a section titled “Cute Is Not Overrated.” “If you’re going to have to look at something several times a day,” she writes, “it might as well make you smile.”

Of course, innovation is the true father of the doll-house-as-hand-cream phenomenon. With heavy investment in research and development, South Korean companies like Etude House, Skinfood, and PeriPera require as little as six months to take a product from conception to consumer. “They’re focusing on what’s next,” says Cho, which enables brands to look past creating an heirloom-worthy jewel box compact in favor of the kind of limited-edition packaging that incites sneakerhead levels of hysteria among its collectors. Even Cho has woebegone tales of missing out on a set of blotting papers stored within a sleepy kitten.

It’s a template that strikes a chord with just as many Americans. Around the Vogue offices more editors are likely to stop dead in their tracks over a $ 5 set of hair rollers fashioned as foam strawberries than they are for a $ 400 serum. And companies from Urban Outfitters to Ulta are paying attention, stocking cartoonish face creams and blushes adorned in dinosaur drawings next to cult-classic American and European stalwarts. This month, we’ve taken the liberty of combing some of our favorite K-beauty retailers stateside for the most charming products that will turn your powder room into a playroom—because above all, shouldn’t beauty be fun?

How Multi-Racial Emojis Are Changing The Way We ‘LOL’

Opening Ceremony is pleased to present columnist Alexis Wilkinson’s after-hours thoughts. And you know she has thoughts: the former terror of The Harvard Lampoon and current staff writer for HBO’s Veep, Alexis–with her candor and wit–is our girl crush. Here, “Late-Ish With Alexis” muses on the way multi-racial emojis are changing the way we LOL.

Back in April, Apple released the iOs 8.3 update for its devices which finally included a feature users had been suggesting for years: emojis with a variety of skin tones instead of just white. By all accounts, the response was tremendous. From Buzzfeed to Business Insider, outlets reported people happily de-whitening their emoji lives. When I first downloaded the update, my most recently used emojis became a great display of brown hands doing various things instead of the default white hands. “Yes,” I whispered into my display screen, “I am represented. I can finally be as black in this medium as I am in all other mediums. How glorious.” No longer would people of color have to express themselves with emojis the color of a toilet seat. There was a sense of pride in the fact that Apple thought we were important enough to specifically acknowledge. Not only that, there were also same-sex couples! It was a technicolor dream come true.

But this update didn’t just come with benefits to minority racial groups and queer people. It effectively adds a new potentially offensive overtone to every single text! Read the full story on the Opening Ceremony website.

101 Life Changing Quotes is a gift from award winning author, Tim Beachum to all of his readers. For over two decades I have been starting each day off by reading a new positive, or motivational quote. My belief is what you put in your mind will manifest through your physical actions. Imagine reading wise words that you know for a fact has already motivated people throughout history. In life we are sometimes faced with obstacles that at the moment seem insurmountable. We will let whatever the obstacle is eat at us until we are mentally broken down. What we do not realize is, all negative obstacles in our lives are just like seasons. It to shall pass. It is not what happens to us in life, it is how we view what happens that will make the difference. This is where the quotes come in to play. For me these quotes help me to remember during my darkest days that this to shall pass! I am giving this book away free, however all I ask is that you pay it forward. Tell someone else about it, share it on your social network e.g. Facebook, Twitter – etc… Again thank you for downloading 101 Life Changing Quotes and I hope that it serves you as well as it has served me.
