British Fashion Council Expands China Partnerships Strategy With Ontimeshow

LONDON — The British Fashion Council is expanding its China partnerships strategy with Ontimeshow, one of Shanghai’s largest trade shows, to promote British brands during Shanghai Fashion Week later this month. They will also host a series of events with key industry partners, WWD has learned. An announcement is expected today.
The project is part of the BFC’s China partnership strategy, which was revealed in September and aims to help British designer businesses access the Chinese market. The organization is supporting talent through networking, content and access partnerships and business support.

Brands Roksanda and Peter Pilotto will launch a stand-alone showroom within Ontimeshow from March 28 to 31, with support from the Department for International Trade. The trip will help the brands’ business development in the market and the designers will have the opportunity to meet with key retailers, media, stylists, opinion leaders, creative industry influencers and high-net-worth individuals from the region.
“China has always been an important part of our strategy,” said Caroline Rush, chief executive officer of the BFC. “We are delighted to collaborate with Ontimeshow to bring two hero brands of London Fashion Week to Shanghai. We hope this is only the

British Fashion Council Plumps for The People’s Vote on Brexit

SPEAKING UP: The British Fashion Council is backing a call for The People’s Vote, which would see the U.K. hold a public vote on the final Brexit deal. Their cry came just hours after British Prime Minister Theresa May’s proposed deal was roundly defeated in Parliament. May faces a no-confidence vote in her government on Wednesday.
The BFC said it cannot emphasize strongly enough that a no-deal Brexit “is a scenario that should be avoided at all costs. The ongoing uncertainty and confusion that leaving without a deal creates will have a negative impact on our industry, where investment is already impacted from the uncertainty being faced.”
The organization argued that a no-deal situation will result in no transition period after March 29, when the U.K. is due to leave the European Union.
”With an industry that is predominantly small and medium-sized enterprises, we would struggle to cope with the trade realities that it would bring.
“In light of the above, and the industry’s preference to remain, based on all polls pre- and post-referendum, we are supporting the call for The People’s Vote as the preferred current option to minimize the impact to industry based on there being no valid deal on the table,”

Garment District Rezoning Goes Forward With City Council Approval

It’s official — the New York City Council has approved rezoning of Manhattan’s Garment District.
After decades of wrangling and dispute among city officials, landlords, designers and long-term tenants — the sometimes warring parties have come to a truce. Thursday’s landmark vote frees up parameters that were put in place in 1987. Since that time under Mayor Ed Koch’s administration, which established the district, landlords in Manhattan’s Garment District have been required to add a square foot of garment space for every square foot removed for some other use.
Garment District loyalists lobbied for a building earmarked for garment manufacturing, a tax-incentive program to enlist more owners and to provide tools to upgrade the industry and train workers for long-term survival of the garment center’s nucleus. Community Boards Four and Five, Pratt Center for Community Development, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, the Design Trust for Public Space and The Municipal Art Society, have been pushing for Garment Center preservation.
The city’s Economic Development Corp. and the Garment District Alliance Business Improvement District, which more or less covers the area bordered by 35th to 41st Streets and Fifth to Ninth Avenues, have been behind the rezoning, which they feel would benefit the

Saudi Arabia Takes Lead Role at Arab Fashion Council

LONDON — The Arab Fashion Council is opening a new regional office in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in a bid to develop a sustainable fashion infrastructure in the country, WWD has learned.
An announcement is expected today.
The nonprofit organization, which represents 22 Arab countries, is spearheading a long-term strategy that aims to fuel the growth of the fashion industry across the Arab world and cement the region’s position as a major market.
The council’s initiatives range from design to manufacturing, retail, education and commerce. Its agenda in Saudi Arabia is focused on supporting local talent and acting as a partner for international designers wishing to enter the market.
While most leading luxury brands have tapped into the Arab market, offering local customers the most high-end versions of their products, the council believes there is a lot of room for emerging designers to build their Middle Eastern businesses.
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always been recognized as one of the world’s powerhouses of investment in talent. With a wealth of resources far beyond oil, the kingdom is rich in its people and their ambitions for the future,” said Jacob Abrian, founder and chief executive officer of the Arab Fashion Council.
Abrian also pointed to Saudi Arabia’s

Killer Mike continues to flourish as a musician, activist and business proprietor. The Run The Jewels founder was recently honored with Killer Mike Day by the Atlanta City Council.

On July 17, City Councilman Andre Dickens declared it to be Michael “Killer Mike” Render Day in the A. The “Legend Has It” rapper has been a fixture in voicing the community’s political and social challenges; specifically with regards to empowering the under-serviced.

The MC also took on another Rap alias “Driller Mike” as a multi-million dollar tunnel-boring machine that will be used to host over 2.4 billions gallons of drinking water in Atlanta will bear his name.

British Fashion Council Announces Rock Vault Lineup

LONDON — The British Fashion Council has announced the 10 jewelry houses who will make up the Rock Vault lineup at London Fashion Week later this month.
New to the schedule are: Completedworks; Lily Kamper; Rachel Boston; Ruifier and The House of Ana de Costa. Those names will join the existing designers on the roster: Beth Gilmour, Jacqueline Cullen, Ornella Iannuzzi, Shimell and Madden and Yunus & Eliza.
Rock Vault, a showcase for jewelry that launched at London Fashion Week in 2012, and is curated by Stephen Webster, will run at the London Fashion Week designer showrooms from Sept. 18 through 22. The initiative offers emerging jewelry designers a platform to showcase their collections, along with mentoring and sponsorship opportunities.
Webster noted that as Rock Vault is designed to support designers for a maximum of three years, five designers have now left the support initiative. “Over the years we’ve become so ingrained with the designers and their businesses that saying goodbye is difficult,” he said, but added that “we are delighted to welcome and announce [the] five news designers, who will join the five existing members.”

The U.S. And Chile Got The UN Security Council To Talk LGBT Rights

WASHINGTON — The most powerful body at the United Nations on Monday had its first ever conversation about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues.

A group of speakers — including two gay Middle Eastern survivors of anti-LGBT persecution by the Islamic State militant group, as well as U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson and an advocate for global LGBT equality — addressed an informal gathering of top diplomats whose countries sit on the U.N. Security Council.

The United States and Chile co-sponsored the event, which was unprecedented for the Security Council, a number of whose member states are notoriously intolerant of LGBT people. The event’s organizers, mindful of the diplomatic sensitivities that accompany discussions of LGBT issues, classified the event as an Arria-formula meeting – a type of unofficial, confidential and non-mandatory gathering of Security Council members.

Thirteen of the 15 current Security Council member states attended Monday’s meeting, a U.N. diplomat in attendance told The Huffington Post. Angola and Chad were the only countries that skipped the event.

Samantha Power, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., launched the event by acknowledging its groundbreaking nature.

“Today we are making U.N. history,” Power told the attendees. “This is the first time in history that the Council has held a meeting on the victimization of LGBT persons. It is the first time we are saying, in a single voice, that it is wrong to target people because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. It is a historic step. And it is, as we all know, long overdue.”

Referring to the Islamic State group’s widely publicized targeting of LGBTQ residents of Iraq and Syria, Power told the diplomats that “we are coming together as a Security Council to condemn these acts, to demand they stop, and to commit to one day bringing the perpetrators to justice. That unified condemnation matters.”

A gay man from Iraq, who addressed the Security Council members by phone using a pseudonym, had previously told The New York Times that he “hadn’t been breathing” for weeks as he tried to escape the Islamic State militants who took over his hometown.

The other man, a Syrian named Subhi Nahas, had faced threats from both the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian affiliate of al Qaeda, Power told the Security Council gathering.

Power pointed out that it’s not only extremist groups like the Islamic State that target LGBT individuals in these countries. Both men had faced discrimination and threats from Iraqis and Syrians not linked to the Islamic State or to Jabhat an-Nusra, she said.

“While the targeting of LGBT individuals in the region appears to have worsened as ISIL’s power has grown, such violence and hatred existed well before the group’s dramatic rise, and that violence and hatred extends far beyond ISIL’s membership,” Power said, using the Obama administration’s preferred name for the Islamic State group. “Condemning ISIL’s violent and systematic targeting of LGBT individuals is the easiest step we can take today. Because while today’s session is focused on the crimes against LGBT persons committed by ISIL, we know the scope of this problem is much broader.”

“The effort to defend the equal rights of LGBT persons must also be waged within every one of our countries, even those where important progress has been made — and that includes in the United States,” she continued. “For just as this year we have made tremendous strides in advancing LGBT rights in the United States, we are under no illusion that the work is finished. Every one of our countries can and must do more to advance these rights domestically.”

The U.N. Security Council comprises 15 countries. Five of them, including the U.S., are permanent members, and two of those permanent member states, Russia and China, have received international criticism for their track records on LGBT rights. The current group of 10 non-permanent members includes LGBT-friendly countries like Chile and New Zealand, but also countries like Nigeria, where same-sex couples can be imprisoned for up to 14 years.

Power told the Times that the U.S. hopes to get LGBT rights “into the DNA” of the U.N.

That way, she said, “when you’re talking about minorities or vulnerable groups, you would always have L.G.B.T. people included.”

Germany Establishes First Fashion Council

BERLIN — The long-awaited Fashion Council Germany is getting primed for action.
The first national organization devoted to supporting and bolstering the interest in Germany’s burgeoning designer community, the FCG will be unveiling its first initiatives at the Zeitmagazin/Vogue Fashion & Style Conference Thursday during Berlin Fashion Week.
Founded in January as a registered association by 10 people from the media, communications, retail, fair and design sectors, the FCG is still in its pre-membership and official funding stages. However, as president Christiane Arp, editor in chief of German Vogue, and managing director Marcus Kurz, founder and director of production agency Nowadays, explained, it has been possible to get a jump-start with several pilot projects before the council expects to be fully up and running.
One is a prelude to the FCG’s planned fellowship program, a juried, two-year long mentoring program including financial support slated to start with up to three designers in fall 2016. In cooperation with the Berlin Senate and using funds previously slated for the Senate’s Start Your Fashion Business competition, two Berlin designers will already be enrolled in a mentoring program this year.
In June, Arp also attended the European Parliament’s first high-level conference on “The Future of Cultural and Creative Industries in Europe”
